It supposedly causes the mail or news reader "display the face before the
From header". Seems to have no effect in kmail...

How can you read news in KMail? Did you read the documentation on X-Face?
Nowdays we have google and wikipedia.
X-Face is only for newsgroup ;-) so no chance to see it in the mail I guess.
It is on the right place - I was just amazed to see it is supported.

Confirmed.
You need to set "Fancy Headers" to see the icon.
