I have no problems with konquerorsu on other distros by the way.

I also started xfce's thunar from a shell with sudo thunar (on the TDE), and can save to files ok with that, so it's not some global problem about saving to files.

Any suggestions as to how to resolve the problem?

Problem resolved. I wasn't expecting to find another text editor under the 'Actions' menu for editing as root. 10 years of working with kde 3.5.10 and earlier using konquerorsu had me confused as to why 'Open With' kate, kwrite, etc wasn't able to save as root as earlier konquerorsu versions do.

I must learn to look in unexpected places when what used to work no longer does.
