upgrade pulseaudio?

I'm having trouble getting skype working fully on an install of tde/squeeze on an Acer Aspire netbook.

tde/kubuntu required some wrangling (including fooling with 'default.pa') on the same machine but it seems to be behaving. I notice it's got pa 2.1 while squeezy has pa 0.9.21 so I'm hoping it will solve my problem.

(problem: skype cannot see the mic whether internal or external.)

how do I do an upgrade of pa? do I have to upgrade the whole shebang?
