In older versions of KDE in the default aplications section of Kcontrol there used to be a way to change the file manager see picture in link below. I don't see that anymore. I would like to change from Konqueror to Pcmanfm as my default. Is there a way to set that from the command line or a way to add back the file manager selection? I find that PCmanfm can be set to see many more types of thumbnails than Konqueror can and I find that very helpful.

Hi,
You screenshot is from KDE4, not KDE3, so it would be good to double-check if that option was available in KDE3 too.
I fully agree with you that we should have that option.

You are correct about the screenshot but I remember being able to toggle between Konq and Dolphin in the old days. I'm just wondering if it is possible to change it from the command prompt? It is my only real gripe with TDE while I loved Konq in it's day other File managers have passed it by in features.

So this is interesting I decided I wanted to try the bull in a china shop approach. I went into /opt/trinity/bin and moved Konqueror to Konqueror.old and created a sym link to pcman there instead. Now if I click on the default Konqueror icon on the task bar it opens pcman as it should but if I click any short cut on the desktop or elsewhere Konqueror still opens which you would think at best I would get an error saying it can't do what I ask. So where is it still finding Konqueror?

Possibly because it's not calling "konqueror".

OK so I restored Konq as that is obviously not the right way to do it. I will keep looking. Thanks for the help.

Try this; works for me with most KDE3/TDE applications.
1. Open any file manager and go to a directory, e.g., /home/USERNAME/
2. Right-click on a folder (not a file), select "open with" and choose "other"; then, when you are given an option, choose Konqueror. (It may be that you already have Konqueror in your list, along with Nautilus, PCManFM, and what-not.)
3. You will see (for most applications) a box at the bottom left-hand of the screen that says "Remember application association for this type of file." Check the box.
Now when you right-click on a folder, you ought to see Konquerer at the top of the list. If you just double-click on the folder, Konqueror ought to open the folder as the default manager.
The only glitch here is that some applications (but not Konqueror) do not obey this method (for example, KPDF), and I don't have a clue why or why not. Also, if you have Dolphin installed, it tends to take over this spot, regardless what you do. I used to purge Dolphin as my first step in a new system; although again, I haven't troubled myself to find out why. (It no longer seems to interfere with Konqueror when I am in the TDE desktop, but I still use Dolphin when I occasionally go into the KDE4 desktop.) All I can say is, this works for me.
Another thing to know is that if you have KDE4 installed (because you like to have another desktop manager available), then you could have two instances of Konqueror installed (although I believe that konqueror-trinity takes over once installed). Also, check your Konqueror profiles, as Konqueror can also be used as a web browser.
There used to be configuration files for konqueror (actually for practically all KDE3 apps) here: /home/silenus/.kde/share/config/ especially, this one: /home/silenus/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc When I look in the corresponding folder for Trinity, however, I find: /opt/trinity/share/config.kcfg/konqueror.kcfg which is an xml file, so I haven't tried to mess with it yet.

If you go to KDE Components => File Manager, tab Behaviour, do you see 'Show File Tips', 'Show previews in file tips' check boxes? If so, that should do what you want. WRT swapping pcman for Konqueror, right-click on the Konqueror desktop or menu bar icon, select Configure button, to the Application tab, and change the Command field to call the program you want. (This still might not get all of the features you want, but it will be more consistent than renaming the program.)

The same steps work to set most of the default applications in TDE (and I think it's still the same in KDE4). However, as I mentioned, there are some applications that apparently cannot be set as the default by that method - KPDF is the one that most annoyed me, as I prefer it for my pdf reader, but cannot set it as the default. It is curiouser still, because both Konqueror and KPDF are KDE/TDE.
If anybody has some notion why it works for some applications but not others, I would be interested to know.

Hi Bill,
It can be done, you're just in the wrong area to change that ;) as it’s a Konqueror {default?} behavior that you’re needing to override.
In Konqueror:
- Settings >> Configure Konqueror >> File Associations - Find filename patter: >> pdf - Known Types >> {Select pdf} - Select tab “Embedding” - In “Left Click Action”: - - Check “Use settings for ‘application’ group” - - Un-check everything else - - Verify KPDF is first entry*
* It’s first in both tabs for me.
Best, Michael
