it just gets curiouser. i did an apt-get remove of kgtk-qt3-trinity and it was indeed installed and now everything works. but i didn't install it just now, and everything was working.

what is the problem with kgtk-q3-trinity? I installed it today and it made for sanity in Firefox and Pan.
