Hi Guys,
Just had a friend call me and tell me that all the text in his applications and logout window has disapeared !
He is running Alexandre's PCLinuxOS with the Trinity desktop.
I don't have a clue where to look to sort this issue. Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks in advance:

My suggestion is that your friend gives the full and correct info. When was the last time it worked. What did he do then. was it during doing work. Was it on bootup etc etc. etc

Maybe he's going blind :) No, seriously, it is really time for a new release of my LiveCD. It is really really near release and it uses TDE packages builds against the new PCLinuxOS 2014 libs, which will be much better because as of now, it might not be a good idea to update the remaster from last summer.
Soon! -Alexandre

Hi Alexandre I am updating regularly, only because I want to find out when it will break. So far it seems to go well, except for Wine, which got a deadly disease :-) and firefox which got slow ( as mentioned in a previous post ) is now a feature :-) But from a technical point, I am very interested to know how the text could disappear. Never have seen that, in any distro ! OK, waiting for your remaster .
Tony
Hi, Tony,
Your friend could try to select the area where the text is supposed to be, and copy to clipboard, then paste into a plain text editor. It's possible that rather than the text going away, it (or the background) got switched so text and background are same color. Black-on-black used to be a frequent problem with KDE version 1 in 1990's RedHat releases, when you tried to set up a dark theme.

Hi Douglas Thanks for the reply. Yes, my first thought was that he was editing something and that it went wrong there. That's why I asked more info. ( I don't like guessing ! ) I did a search and you are right, there were entries about it.
And btw, it was Baron's friend :-)
Have a nice day Tony
Hi Guys,
For some reason I'm not getting any posts from the list at the moment ! So I'm working from reading the posts on the web archive.
I hadn't thought about trying a new user. So that is one for tomorrow. His HDD could be suspect since a few weeks ago he moved the machine to another place in his room whilst it was still running. I checked "Libre Office" and the same thing happens to the menu's there.
Oh he called me this evening to tell me that he can't print anything either and Mplayer has stopped working.
The thought does occur to me that the mainboard could be dieing. Bad Caps springs to mind so I might have to look at the board.
Thanks all.

I Agree ! He said that it was working fine before he went on holiday for a fortnight and when he booted up for the first time after coming back there was no text on any menu.
Maybe he's going blind :)
That may be more accurate than you think... He has diabetes.

Thanks Alexandre. I'm calling round to see him in a few minutes, so I'll have a better idea of what is going on. I'll report back.

Hi All,
I've been round and had a look at his machine and seen the problem 1st hand.
In every application the letter on the menu bar that has an underscore either at the begining or end has the letter missing.
Many of the folders have no visible name, but if you click to rename the folder a blue bar appears the same length as the name if you could see it. Most of the flyout menus have either the full name missing or part of the name. There are spaces in the menus that a completly blank. On logout there are similar missing letters and blank spaces.
I also discovered that a number of items on the desktop were marked "Read Only" and making them read/write allowed the app called to work.
Hope this helps to find out what he has done. He swears that the last thing he did was to copy pictures off his phone before going on holiday, at which time everything was working. Since calling me he has tried to update his machine by running Synaptic, without any success.
Thanks Guys:
Maybe this will give you some hints, I have a similar but less harmful problem in my Debian Wheezy + IDE 3.5.13.2 installation: - Sometimes scrollbars of GTK applications are drawn in strange places, this is visible mostly in Palemoon, but sometimes in Geany or GIMP too. Scrolling back and forth (or other refreshing affected area) removes "fake" scrollbar. - Rarely, one character of UI font gets damaged until relogin: pixel line is missing, lower part is messed up, line is filled. It affects all instances of a character. The same thing happens (very rarely) for smallest icons, but never for UI parts or larger (>=24x24) icons. - Very rarely edited text in UI fields is missing, but selecting and deselecting it makes it visible again. - In LibreOffice text too long for field is drawn over field's end entering form area, but can be edited in field only. The problems in my case are probably related to poorly supported Intel graphics chip (I'm using Dell D430 notebook) as only the last one appears if the notebook is used not in a dock (in a dock it runs dual 2048x1536 displays).

Does the problem occur when logged in as a different user? (root, or create another user to test.)

Or another approach,
does the problem ocur when he boots a Live-CD like Linux Mint? In that case the hardware is very likely the culprit.

Hi Nice to find 42 emails in your inbox when you wake up in the morning :-)
Baron, this is what I would do/would advice your friend. It's not satisfying from a technical point of view, .....but.....since Alexandre is coming out with a brand new remaster in a couple of days, I would ignore the whole tutti and backup what needs to be backed up and install the << new >> remaster as soon as it's available..
Alternative, he can re-install the old one in a << separate >> partition. Just install, no configuration or updates. This may or may not help to determine if hardware is involved, and then take it up from there. That is, if he is the tinkering-kind-of-person
Thirdly, the obvious choice, use his backup to restore the defect one. That's what backups are for. But I bet my last dollar he hasn't a backup, otherwise he wouldn't have asked for assistance.
I am guilty of that crime too :-) more often than not !
And now I have to go. It's an important day for my grand-son , and I am supposed to be there
See you guys later Have fun
Tony
