Hello, While trying yet again to get audio working I managed to clobber my TDE 14 setup. Want to reinstall from live CD (on USB stick). Tried the Ubuntu one; the installer didn't let me complete the partition setup. Tried the most recent Ubuntu nightly; can't even get to the GUI or installer program. I don't care much for what I've seen of PCLinuxOS. Maybe I can mess around with Debian/Exe again. But really, isn't there something I can use and recommend to others that just works???? (i.e., with functioning wifi and sound) -R

My Jessie with TDE14 Just Worked. But you won't get sound and wi-fi with Exe. Exe is all free (as in beer). Install Jessie, then TDE.

I don't understand. It's clear that Exe doesn't have drivers for many sound cards & wifi cards. But, are you saying that regular Debian Jessie with TDE installed later will provide drivers for most sound cards & wifi cards? Thanks

Here in Mint I e.g. have the package
linux-firmware-nonfree
and other nonfree packages. There is a good chance they include drives for your hardware. They for sure are free as in beer but nonfree according speech (you don't have to pay) and to use them you have to include the correct repositories, e.g.:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
in case of Debian.

Yes. Most. Though probably not the newest. And you may indeed have to edit your repositories as Gerhard suggests and install linux-firmware-nonfree. But I didn't have to do so. To my surprise.
I always edit my repositories automatically anyway to include contrib and non-free.

Thanks, everybody. Good to know. Mint KDE is my main distro, & I use TDE on my really old computers.
I've had better luck with things Just Working when I install a distro with TDE already included. When I add TDE later, I've had a lot of problems.
However, I like Mint so much, I'm going to try installing Mint XFCE, then adding TDE. Wish me luck!
Thanks, again.

That works well. If you once like Mint!!! Well, I did it after Mint and MATE. But I don't suppose that it is very different.

In theory, it should be similar. MATE is too bloated & slow on these old computers I'm using. If Mint still had an LXDE edition, I'd add TDE to that. Since that no longer exists, I'll add TDE to Mint XFCE. A Mint TDE live DVD would be better, but creating & maintaining that is beyond my skill level. Thanks everybody for your advice.
Cheers

This image has non-free firmware, helps with unsupported , by Debian, hardware. Install just the base + standard..put TDE on top. http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/
and some gasp ! reading :-) : https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch06s04.html.en

My laptop has both Exe and Lubuntu distros. I don't care for the Lubuntu desktop and couldn't switch it over to TDE. Hence the emphasis on Exe.
In Exe I copied and installed modules from Lubuntu. Got wifi and ALSA audio but then tried installing Pulseaudio in order to use Skype. That clobbered audio completely, leading eventually to my original post.
I will try Lisi's above advice - install a straight Jessie Debian, then add TDE from the repositories.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like my system works well now. Before this had trouble with other live CDs: Jessie Debian installed okay but seemed unable to get a wifi connection. tde-ubuntu-14.04-desktop-latest-amd64 and lubuntu-14.10-desktop-amd64 were unable to complete the installation.
Finally had success with linuxmint-17.1-mate-64bit, added the Trinity repos and installed my favorite TDE apps. Later will try to setup the display manager.
