It would have been a bit more obvious had it been above the right pane of the little window.
The right pane only has a line of text until you start opening/selecting items in the list. Prepending that text with 'Search for/' (select a file type...) might make the functionality clearer.
It sounds like you haven't discovered TDE's extensive help sections. Clicking the title bar ? mark and then the File Associations text entry field provides basic information. Clicking the Help button (bottom left), provides a lot more - foreground in the screenshot.
It might also help if it was menu > Trinity Control Center, instead of menu > TCC > TCC to actually open the control center. I don't see any advantage to duping the control center menu in the main menu and it makes opening the control center harder/less obvious. Using the control center menu provides a third help option (> ?, < Help) via a side menu question mark icon.

This (your screenshot) was the first time I had seen this screen in 14 and it is remarkably clear! And the help files work! I really must upgrade my desktop. Kudos to the developers. The control centre improvements seem amazing.
