Hi
I'm trying to get skype sound to work but apparently the monkeys at MS removed alsa support and replaced it with pulse, which is rubbish. Even though I have pulse enable (pclos - ali's remaster), it still doesn't show up. Is there a fix to re-enable alsa or the like?
Kate
I wish I knew. Mines broken too, and Pulse is installed by default in Debian.
I think it's a conspiracy, the Pulse/systemd author is being paid by Microsoft to destroy the Linux user experience.

We meet again. :)
I think we are all in that leaky boat Kate, running wheezy here. I have "alsactl restore" commands in at least 2 places where it should be exec'd when I reboot, but it still doesn't work at all, NO sound until X has started, and I have logged in and opened a terminal and typed it in as the logged in user. You must have configured it to work, and did an "alsactl save" (or store? IDK) as that user first of course so it has fixed settings to restore to.
I believe the correct terminology for the reboot default of muted sound is what the British would call "a right PITA"? If prodded, I could come up with far more descriptive terms that are NSFW for sure.
So I would call up the alsomixergui, and see if you can make skype work, and when you have, quite the gui and do the save/store. See the alsactl man page for that correct syntax.
And good luck!
Cheers, Gene Heskett

don't know what you've tried doing but in my setup the audio stuff is available in skype under "options/sound devices", the only available option being 'pulseaudio server (local)'.
also install "pulse volume control."

AFAIK no, modern skype is pulse only. But a lot of pulse hate is unfounded and comes from extremely idiotic decision by ALL distribution to configure pulse by default in "alsa takeover" mode. It can perfectly work as a second layer sound server, and it works very good as one.

I havebeen using the skype-debian_4.2.0.13-1_i386.deb package which is the last one with ALSA support, but it was constantly giving login errors when changing networks. I recently replaced it with the 4.3 (PULSE). Yes it took me also a while to configure it, as sound was not working from the start, but now it is OK.
I agree with you that no one should enforce anything as far as there is an option for free choice, but in case of Skype it was not even Microsoft who did it. It was it's own personell who took the decision. On the other hand if you have installed it, it is your responsibility to configure it and make it work.
What I can advise is install "pulse volume control." as Felmon suggested. You can reach the app via skype audio settings or pavucontrol from the command line. You have to be in a Test Call to be able to see some of the options. It took me perhaps 1h to configure and make it work.
Chelange your brain and skill helps you get smarter!

You may want to look into apulse, if it's packaged for your distro (or you're willing to do extra work just to kick pulseaudio to the curb):
https://github.com/i-rinat/apulse
It's a pulseaudio emulator for ALSA, and Gentoo lists it as a valid alternative for use with Skype.

Can you tell my father and my sister that they should use something else? We obviously use skype because we want to communicate with people using skype.

Many podcasters use skype for interviews. WebRTC may very well be better in every way, that doesn't make it _useful_.

Gerente,
Thank you for this. I will looking into today asap. I did, however, resolve the sound problems with skype.
As it turns out, because the distro is a remastered ISO, it has config files left over from the author. I had to purge pulseaudio to remove all config files and reinstall. Once I did that, it worked fine.
I do agree with you in the skype is for crakmonkeys. I would LOVE to get ride of it. I'll let you know if any of these work for us.
Thank you again.

Thank you again,
That is always the problem, isn’t it, having the time. Most of us have lives and jobs. "iadest" has already given up, as have I. When I need Skype I use a Samsung tablet instead of my desktop with Wheezy and TDE 14.0.2 -- soon to upgraded to Jessie "when I have the time" -- famous last words.
This instance is not the first time I have given up on some "improvement" because of lack of time -- the price of living with Linux, I suppose -- not that Microsoft is that much better if any.
Ken
Thanks for alternatives. About a year ago I was looking for open alternative for Skype (voice connections). Unfortunately, I found that no such thing exists for connections which are not a server-grade (with public IP). I'm behind a router, then another one (ISP NAT), with some port blocking, then probably another one (I'm not sure), and I cannot use anything except server-based solutions. I haven't found any open-source solutions working. Half of these just couldn't connect (throwing illogical errors), the other half tried to manipulate router which is not mine. Well, after researching about Skype and how its internals are protected far more beyond normal copyright (do they try to mask backdoors this way?), I decided not to go with it and not use voice communication at all. No skype is not using any backdoor, rather it has comprehensive mechanism to try and find a way to get the connection to the other part. There was a nice article years ago, about the internal structure and how people tried to reverse engineer it. If you can use etherape or alike (wireshark) you can see what is going on when you are behind NAT and in a less protected network. We did a test with very restrictive network and it had a callback channel via some skype server - I think it finds out which port is open and uses this port to get the communication via some skype server.
The problem with using alternative is also related to what your counter part would use. The bigger problem here is incompatibility of protocol implementations, so that you are not free to decide but use whatever the counter part uses to have a communication.
I recently read more about OTR, which seems to be implemented AFAIR also in TDE or some patch for KDE3 - I don't know exactly now. Unfortunately there is no similar voice/video solution to encrypt the stream ... well there are some kinds of encryption, but I don't think anything was implemented on unix bases and still your peer must use the same or similar application ... that is the problem (with democracy) ;-)
