Dear TDE users list,
This is a problem probably outside of TDE. I often use ImageMagick import to take a snapshot of part of my screen, such as a particular image. With previous installations, up to openSUSE 15.2 (and TDE), I have always been able to enter something like:
import test.ppm
and then either use for example Ctrl+F4 or Alt+Tab to switch to a different desktop or window. However, with openSUSE 15.4 (tested with TDE and LXDE) after entering the command for import the keyboard freezes and I cannot switch desktop or window, neither I can exit import by pressing Ctrl+C. The mouse still works and I can still take a screenshot of whatever is on the screen. However, this makes it more combersome to take a screenshot. The interesting thing is that it seems like whatever I type on the keyboard is "queued" and executed once import exits (by drawing a rectangle with the mouse). So eventually it still switches but only after import is done.
If anybody has encountered this same problem and has a possible solution, I would be glad to hear.
Thanks,
Gianluca

This doesn't specifically address your issue, but maybe there is a TDE solution for this non-TDE problem.
Have you ever tried ksnapshot? I use it all the time, and it is highly configurable. You can take a snapshot of the whole screen, or just a section, and it has other similar features.
Bill
Thanks for the tip!
ksnapshot works better although it has the same problem, i.e., the keyboard input is also not processed. If I use for example Alt+Tab I still see the window selection, but it does not switch window or desktop.
However, as long as I put the window that I need to take the snapshot of in the foreground, then ksnapshot works. I still cannot switch desktop, but it already helps. I also like that ksnapshot gives you a preview of your snapshot and that you can select fullscreen, window, section of a window or just a region. I should have known it earlier!

Now that you mention this detail, it rings a bell! I have the same or a very similar problem with my keyboard. (This is my old external keyboard, which has both a USB 1.0 connector and one of those round pin connectors from the late 1980s or early 1990s, I think.) Up until a couple weeks ago, it always worked just fine, but lately I have been having all kinds of inexplicable issues. One of those is that many of my usual commands will not work with my keyboard; for example, alt+tab doesn't work to switch windows any more, and instead I have to use the keyboard on my laptop.
For the record -- just in case anybody out there wonders why -- I cannot use the laptop keyboard for any more than brief functions, etc., due to my big fat hands. When using a laptop, I have always had to plug in an external keyboard. If I try to enter my system password (which is exceptionally long and complicated) on a laptop keyboard, it will take me maybe 15 minutes to succeed in logging in. I bought a new external keyboard, but that doesn't work at all with TDE's Secure Attention Key feature, and otherwise is problematic with a Linux system, so I will try to return it for something more compatible.
I wonder, though, if these similar issues are not symptoms of some deeper problem. Has anybody else out there had such problems?
My own problems, by the way, keep growing, and soon, in order to keep track of them, I will have to start a kind of encyclopedia of issues and bugs.
Anyway, I am glad to hear that this helped, at least a little. TDE's ksnapshot is a great application.

There are three workarounds that you can use to switch screens without using the keyboard:
You can use the scrollwheel on your mouse to switch screens by placing the mouse cursor over the 'Desktop Preview and Pager' applet in your panel and rolling the scrollwheel, or by clicking on the desired screen rectangle in the Desktop Preview and Pager grid.
You can also check 'Mouse wheel over desktop background switches desktop' in Control Center => Desktop => Multiple Desktops.
You can also change 'Active Desktop Borders' to 'Always enabled' in Control Center => Desktop => Window Behavior, Advanced tab, which allows you to change screens by pushing the mouse cursor against one of the four edges of the current screen.

Hi Leslie,

placing the mouse cursor over the 'Desktop Preview and Pager' applet in your panel and rolling the scrollwheel, or by clicking on the desired screen rectangle in the Desktop Preview and Pager grid.
Thanks for the suggestion. Normally, I can switch desktop using the wheel of the mouse. However, when in snapshot mode (import or ksnapshot) using the wheel has no effect either. If I click on the desired screen rectangle, as you suggest, then it takes a snapshot of that section of the panel. So, switching desktops after entering snapshot mode seems not possible. However, ksnapshot is still helpful in mitigating the issue. In fact, after entering `ksnapshot` a new window appears with ksnapshot options. I can then move that window to the desired desktop and click on "New Snapshot", which makes the window with options disappear so I can take a snapshot of what I need to. I hope TDE lives for very long.

Hi Gianluca, ksnapshot has a "snapshot delay" field: put a value there (for example 4 seconds) and press "New screenshot". You have for seconds to move around (change desktop, select window) before the snapshot is taken. I just tested changing desktop during the delay, it works fine.

Hi Michele,
Thanks for the suggestion. It works for all modes of capture except "Region". You also need to have it placed right over the window you want to take a snapshot of at the time when the delay ends. But I think it is still useful and makes it simpler to take a snapshot of a window. Sometimes I need to select a region. In that case, I need to already be in the correct desktop. The alternative is to take a snapshot of a window and then use gimp to select a portion of the window.
Thanks!

Ciao Gianluca, Ah I see. Not sure why it is not available for the "Region", I guess there is no hard stopper IMO. Can you file an issue on TGW as an enhancement request to get "Delay" functionality also for "Region" mode? Cheers Michele

The delay function may not be available for "Region" mode because when the delay is over it takes a snapshot of the window right away. If you have "No delay" and you click on "New Snapshot", then the mouse cursor becomes a cross and you need to click on a window to take a screenshot of it. So, it behaves slightly differently with or without delay. But who knows, maybe it is possible to implement a delay with "Region" mode. As soon as I have time I will submit such a request.

Good point, that maybe is the reason why it does not work with "Region". But maybe it is possible to add a delay to move around and then allow to capture a region after the delay is over. Will see what is possible and reasonable. Thanks for creating the issue report. Cheers Michele

I don't really understand how you intend to use a delay with the region mode. My understanding (and use) is that I need to see the region I want to capture to select it, so "select and change desktop" does not make sense.
I could imagine a delay being useful to capture a region with the cursor inside - actually in such case I capture a full screen and und Gimp.

That would be something like the delay with "Section of a window": during the initial delay you can move around freely (including changing desktop), then after the delay expires the mouse cursor changes and you can select the region of interest. Whether it is possible or not and how easy/difficult it is to implement, we will have to see :-)

Thierry,
The situation with my installation of openSUSE Leap 15.4 is that whenever the mouse is in capture mode, the keyboard I/O is frozen so that I cannot switch desktop or change windows. By allowing a delay in region capture mode I would be able to switch desktops before the mouse enters capture mode. I have submitted the issue about the keyboard freezing to the openSUSE forums and I have to hear back yet. I am not sure whether this issue persists also in Leap 15.5. I wonder whether other distributions experience this, too.
Best,

I am not sure of how you need to use ksnapshot or other applications, but I think that it is possible to use it in the same window or desktop in which you are taking a screenshot.
Maybe I am totally off here, but I will give it a try, anyway. When you click on ksnapshot, go to the top of the application window, right-click, then choose Advanced, then Special Application Settings, or maybe sometimes Special Window Settings. The choose Desktop, then Force, and you can set an application to open only in its special window, or to stay open on all desktops.
This will work for any TDE application, so far as I know, and maybe also non-TDE apps when running within TDE.
Perhaps I misunderstand your needs, and how you use these applications to make screenshots, but this seems like it ought to work.

This certainly works, too and it is my workaround for now. We were discussing the delay as an alternative method.
Having the delay would make the process faster since I could simply set 4 sec, during which I have time to for example press Ctrl+<F4> to switch desktop and then take the snapshot of the region of interest.

I don't really understand how you intend to use a delay with the region mode. My understanding (and use) is that I need to see the region I want to capture to select it, so "select and change desktop" does not make sense.
That would be something like the delay with "Section of a window": during the initial delay you can move around freely (including changing desktop), then after the delay expires the mouse cursor changes and you can select the region of interest. Whether it is possible or not and how easy/difficult it is to implement, we will have to see :-)
Cheers Michele
Implemented and will be part of R14.1.2 release. Cheers Michele
