Honestly I don't think you'll loose your data, as long as you choose
not to reformat it. I can't imagine a scenario where they do a full
disk wipe

Yep, but be aware that if anything goes wrong you WILL lose your data.
You don't say how much space you have or why another drive is no option, but having
700 GB of valuable data and no backup... that's dangerous.
Hard disks do die...
