We have some ideas and plans for the non-profit, just need to have a final round of discussions and then if we are in agreement, we need to set out to do it, which is the hardest part :-)
Starting a new thread to list the costs and special restrictions of non-profits by location.
Note: If the dev’s already have a set in stone plan, then this thread is pointless, but, otherwise, it’ll be a good source of information for the final decision.
I’ll start with what I remember from the last go-around about the USA and Canada (links are in the old thread). I’m using the term ‘Federal’ for national level government and approximations in USDs. Let’s try to keep this just a list of facts and relevant notes. Do include links to sources if you have them.

Would have to have a more precise listing of exatly what the association would do, but providing we don't sell anything and use the funds only for development, in Switzerland, you can freely create an association without any costs (legal setup or registration tax). Associations require regsitration only if they make more than 10 million a year or employ 50 people full time.
There would be moderate costs running a bank/Post account.

I don't know enough about the laws in Switzerland (governing non-profits, or technology, etc.), but putting those words together (*free* & *association*) does have that ring of freedom about it.

Legal setup fees vary per province. You need to register for federal GST (that's sort of like European VAT, except when it isn't) processing purposes once you start doing around $10000CAD/year of business. Probably has to be fronted by a Canadian citizen, and I'm not willing to take on that responsibility.
However, it seems more logical for TDE to set up legal housekeeping in an EU country, since that's where the few devs whose locations I can figure out from their email addresses seem to live.
I personally have no objection to donations going directly to Slávek for a time (actually, I'd have no great problem even if he absconded with them—he's certainly put in enough work on TDE!), but we do need to work this out eventually, and an interim solution might be used as an excuse for more foot dragging. We don't need that.
