Hello all,
I would like to install Trinity Desktop Environment release Wheezy [Debian 7.0] (v3.5.13.2) on freshly installed Debian 7.3.0 (by means of 3 DVD installation discs). Architecture is amd64 with 64GB RAM. Followed verbatim Debian Trinity Repository Installation Instructions. I'm stuck at the very beginning with following error message:
root@deb:~# apt-get install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies: kde-trinity : Depends: kde-core-trinity (>= 5:47) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. root@deb:~#
I found some interesting posts on the list in regards of similar issue: http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::5093 But, my question is whether it got solved finally?
At this stage of system I would not tamper unnecessarily, basically just to avoid new install.
Could you please provide some guidance, how to overcome presented issue?
Best regards. Tom - sp2lob

What's up with the held broken packages? That's where I'd look first.
Other than that I can't offer any help, except to note that I've installed TDE on several new Wheezy installs, without problems.
Hello Dan
Well, I mentioned that it is Debian-7.3.0 released just on December 15-th 2013. And it's very likely the cause of issue.
Anyway, thanks for your input.
Best regards. Tom - sp2lob

7.3 is the same as any Debian 7 (Wheezy) that's fully updated to the point when they released 7.3. So when I install 7.2, and then update it, I have the same thing you have when you install 7.3 and then update it.
So, I would still look at the held broken packages first.
(I still use 7.2 because I use the live disk with nonfree drivers from http://live.debian.net . They don't have 7.3 yet.)

Unless you are using only official debian repositories and never install anything from anywhere else - never use apt, only aptitude. Even if it is unable to deal with your package mess - it will at least tell you what exactly is wrong.
Btw, broken held packages on FRESH install?! I think you are omitting something there...
Hello Nick,
I installed Debian-7.3.0 from 3 DVD discks downloaded from: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-dvd/
So, this is VERY official Debian repository. So far, I do not allow updates/installs from Internet, ONLY from a/m DVD discs.
Trying to install trinity using Synaptic (still from DVD's!) when I mark for installation kde-core-trinity package it get marked with RED square, while other dependent packages get marked with yellow arrow and whole line enlighten with green background. Then after clicking Apply button message appears: Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first.
Next, choosing Edit -> Fix broken packages - another pop-up message:
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. E: Unable to correct dependencies
Once more, system installed from 3 DVD discs!!!
Following your suggestion will try with aptitude, because I'm used to use apt-get most of the time.
Thank you for suggestions.
Best regards.

The Debian DVD's have Trinity on them??

Did you check the disks? md5sum? sha256sum? It sounds to me as though there may be something amiss with the insatll DVDs you are using. Or perhaos a hardware fault.
I too have installed TDE on three new Wheezy systems in the recent past. But I use netinstall for Debian. I had no problems on any of them. My own box I was able just to upgrade from Squeeze. Again, no problems.
What does a/m mean in this context?

1. The acronym for ante meridian is a.m. not a/m. 2. I specifically mentioned the context. "Only from ante meridian DVD disks" would be nonsense.

I think Tom meant "installed this morning from DVD"... But I'm sure he will correct me if I am mistaken.

No - he says himself that a/m means "above mentioned". The point is that it failed to install properly from the DVDs he had previously mentioned. I did suggest that it was a trifle obscure! Some of the emails must be failing to get through to you. No doubt there are others which are not getting through to me!
Happy $FESTIVAL to all!

Thanks for the clarification. I agree it was obscure. My interpretation probably confused things even more.
That aside... Thank you for your good wishes. To you and all listers. A very merry christmas.
The problem here is simply that you are trying to install what you do not have the required dependencies for. The problem is not Wheezy 7.3, dpkg/apt nor TDE.. What is on these dvd's is not enough. It does not matter whether you use apt-get or aptitude.
If you can't network this box to the repos all you can do is identify exactly what packages are missing, download them from another networked box to a removable, then transfer them to /var/cache/apt/archives.
The following packages have unmet dependencies: kde-trinity : Depends: kde-core-trinity (>= 5:47) but it is not going to be installed
Clue: find out why kde-core-trinity won't install and work back from there. I have had to do this many times, working with TDE and Debian Sid. Good luck to you! It will be hard work.

Hello Lisi,
Meaning of a/m in this context is: above mentioned. May be I should write it as: a.m
No, I didn't check neither md5sum nor sha256sum. Will do as soon as possible.
Well, you're doing netinstall. I can not for many reasons. That's why DVD discs.
Thank you for your suggestions.

My only thought in this is that there may be a package needed by Trinity that is not on DVD#s 1-3 (although I cannot imagine how!), and it's showing up as "held" because it's not in the available archive.
I assume if you can't network-install, you also can't network-update.
As a side note, this couldn't be related to being a 64bit system? Maybe a :i386 library is required by accident?

I can't speak for a DVD install. But I have TDE 3.5.2 on all four of the systems I administer. Two of them are 32 bit and two of them are 64bit. All are fine.

Hello Curt et al,
Well, step by step I managed to install TDE, Hi!
One of the reasons was: kdebase-trinity : Depends: xcalib which is a virtual package. ^^^^^^ Many thanks to all persons involved for taking your time.
Now it's time to get some sleep. Have a nice saturday.

If you want to be understood I should write: above mentioned. This is an international list. Abbreviations are rarely understood by everybody! In this case, if you had typed "the" instead of a/m it would have made sense - and been no more typing!

Workaround
Check your DVD. - Install Debian on a similar amd64 networked computer - update debian - install trinity - check all is working - copy the deb package in /var/cache/apt/archives on no-networked computer directory (local-apt) - create a local repository on (local-apt) - update debian - install trinity - check all is working
