Hi everyone. This is a proposal for a tiny usability improvement, in my biased opinion. A bit of space between "close window" (the X) and "restore/maximize" (the boxy thing) up right, on the window border. If you remember, kubuntu did this once.
You can already do this your self, i'm just proposing to make it the default config.
If the devs feel, enough people approve of it on the mailing list, they will do it. So make sure to share your opinion.
It would be helpful for touch screens.

Provided we continue to be able to edit the layout, I would not oppose - I anyway move that button to the left (I started using graphical intefaces long before Windows moved the close button where it used to be maximize and - probably as a deep anti-microsoft reflex and because I just hate to do as I am told - I've *never* got used to the right size close button).
That's probably one of the reasons why I am running Linus and TDE :)

I doubt anybody has time to work on it, but you can just open a bug with the request and it will be handled.

The bug request is already there (bug 2818) and we have initially decided not to do anything because of:
1) there is already a way to achieve the required functionality if needed, so a user can customize the separator space to fit his own needs 2) changing this may trigger most of the other users to ask to change this back.
But if several users express their preference for the additional separator, we can make the change, shouldn't be that big thing.
Cheers Michele

Hi, BTW what are you doing with your signing messages? I was looking some time ago into knode and wanted to know why it shows signatures for some messages and attachment of signatures for others (yours for example - was openpgp/mime).
If you are posting here just to test it - I got you ;-) and I use the opportunity to hijack for few answers.
I was wondering why knode is not using same as kmail (I think kleopatra).
And BTW somehow knode tells me your signature is bad ATM, so I sign to see how it displays my signature.

It displays perfect. BTW we should set pool.sks-keyservers.net as default keyserver in kgpg. I found out recently that things have changed and somehow pool.sks-keyservers.net consolidates keys from multiple sources. It also serves hkp, while many of the other servers do not support hkp anymore.

I am signing using Enigmail on Thunderbird. What it does behind the scenes, not so sure :-) Anyhow in the past few days/weeks, I had a problem with the configuration that was introduced with a recent update of enigmail that screwed up my old config. Hopefully now it is ok.

Strange, I don't see any issue here. Any one else seeing a bad signature from me?

This message is OK. As I mentioned before yours was OpenPGP/MIME now it is embedded signature. I don't know if you intended to have it like this.

In truth - I'm now testing it on myself. I leave aside that it looks strange in design - originally the icons were nicely compact, now there is a "hole". Note that I use minimalist window titles - style B II. For now, every time I go to the icons, I'm surprised - the change, though small, disturbs me. We'll see how it will be after a few days. At the same time, I must admit that sometimes I accidentally closed the window instead of maximizing, so the small gap seems to be a good idea.
I leave the time for testing and we'll see what the decision will be. We look forward to the opinions of other users.

It's been a week that I test on myself the proposed addition of a gap before the button to close window. Although I am constantly surprised by the presence of this gap, I must say that all the time I did not accidentally close any window.
Is there anyone else who has tried this?
Cheers

Hi,
I don't see any real benefit in adding that space, I find it uglier also.
Just my opinion. Have a great day! -Alexandre

I use the crystal theme and have no problem with the icons. Or maybe you are referring to something else?

+1
but they are talking about something else in general - it looks like if this change goes in - the next versions will have a gap between the buttons by default.

I had that space ages ago, but I did not like it, either. Anyway, if the space can be disabled or if there's a theme/style/whatever to enable/disable the space, it's ok.

The space can be added or removed from TDE control panel. The functionality is already there. The discussion is whether to add it by default or not. Cheers Michele

If we're voting on this (?) I'd vote not to have the space by default. It is an unnecessary change in a software suite that prides itself on not pushing unnecessary changes, it is less elegant, and those who need or prefer a space for any reason can enable it in Appearance & Themes / Window Decorations / Buttons.

Your summary is absolutely perfect! There seems to be no such amount of enthusiastic reactions that would justify this change in the default settings. I suppose a good place could be a tip on a wiki:

I think I figured out what the change was about, in kde4 a small space was created between the close and maximize/restore button. Something most people would not even notice.

Thanks Felix, I'm sure I've seen it before today, just didn't notices the change until today and only because of this thread did I notice the gap in my Wheezy install: https://i.paste.pics/36SHL.png And then again in my Jessie install the gap is gone: https://i.paste.pics/36SF2.png
But if it helps someone, in our current TDE install I found the 'keramik' window decoration has a gap between all the buttons.

This is why KDE generally makes such things configurable; some like this feature, others don't. Being able to set it as one prefers is the sort of thing that makes KDE superior to e.g. Gnome.

Or, Heaven help us, even LXQt, which I've been using on the gadget (I need to use something that plays nice with KWin, which has been hacked to be the preferred WM for it). You cannot easily edit, for instance, even the menus. What ought to be a nice little KDE-lite is often maddening. There's almost always a way to do what you want to do in TDE, and when you can't find it somebody here will have the answer.

Depends on how much "automatic" you want/require. I prefer "not automatic" to an automatic that fails.
I've set up a nice "Tablet/notebook" (Toshiba Z20T) with Debian and TDE.
I use "Smooth Blend" as windows decoration with a 46 pixels button size. The icons are not the prettiest (I'd prefer "laptop" but they don't scale) but it works.
I use "onboard" as virtual keyboard with a button in the panel to start it when needed. Onboard does not appear automagically but then it does not either clutter my screen when it wrongly "thinks" I need it as I've experiences with other virtual keyboards.
Linux does not seem to have palm rejection, so I wrote a small tcl/tk app that let's me stop touch when I write (note that this requires an *active* pen, which anyway is the only thing that really lets you write correctly).
Desktop icons are at 48, toolbar icons at 22.
With these settings I use TDE on a touchscreen, and the Z20t let's you separate the screen from the keyboard and use it as a tablet ( *AND* the keyboard has my favorite track point :))
So, while there is certainly room for improvement, I'd say that TDE *is* usable with a touchscreen if you are ready for some compromises.
Regards,
Thierry
