folks,
I can't get back into the desktop, been having file system problems so this is likely related but for now I just want back to the desktop however fragile.
I get an error message after entering username and password: "There was an error setting up inter-process comunication for TDE."
then:
"could not read network connection list check dcopserver is running"
then if I press 'ok' I get: "could not start tdeinit. Check your installation."
I have tried removing the .ICEauthority and other .dcop stuff from the home directory.
the system is on Buster. I just did the latest upgrade several days ago. (the file system problems started earlier; occasionally 'read-only' system so have to run fsck.)
ssd, kinda of aged.
grateful for tips.

I'd probably use a PERL or awk one-liner to generate a list of installed packages and apt-get install --reinstall them all.
If I couldn't just abandon the failing ssd apart from any data that needed backing up.

you are speaking to the file system frailty, right?
I'm still wondering if there's a way to fix the tdeinit/dcopserver problem (without reinstalling everything).

There's a broken file system but we have no idea what is broken.
I guess instead of reinstalling everything you could run debsums first to see if anything is broken.

the file system is working now but it's fragile in the sense that I now get the ready-only problem, say every few days.
if I can help it, I don't want to reinstall at the moment. and I don't have a current enough system-backup. not to mention I'm thinking it may be time for a new SSD.
but I'll reinstall if I can't find a more surgical fix.

Are you perchance running that SSD on a usb adapter? I've found the startech version the only one that Just Works.

no, it's an internal drive. don't recall the brand.
I wish I knew which bits to reinstall.
I've deleted stuff from /tmp. I've removed .ICEauthory and anything dcop-ish in /home. I did a dist-upgrade. I have another user set up for TDE but same log-in problem (of course).
I have xfce4 which I can log into with ease.
ah, important to note this is devuan.
oh, lookie here! I checked out my refind and there's a Kubuntu install - totally forgot! no problem logging in.
the problem install is on /dev/sda3; the kubuntu on /dev/sda2.
again, I wish I knew what needs reinstalling just to be able to log back in.

Did debsums find anything?

unfortunately a rather long list. I won't bore you with it but I don't see anything that I know would account for the problem.
for instance, there's a load of aclocal and automake files, a couple locale files I never invoke, inkscape and a couple of apps and font files.
some trinity stuff though, librellinksplugin.so, kcm_history.so, kded_konqy_preloader.so, libbfd-2.31.1-system.so
I can post it or dig in for any details.

You could try reinstalling just those debs but you need to focus on getting your data off of this ssd and hoping it's intact.

P.S. Please reply just to the list.

sorry, thought I had replied to the list.
I have a backup of my data so that's not an issue.
I'll try doing some reinstalls. the kded_ bit looks interesting.

thanking Mike Bird for his advice!
I am still stuck. I mentioned I had another partition set up with an old Kubuntu or something. I refurbished it and updated it to Buster, no problems.
it would be nice however to reclaim my old space.
I'm wondering about the idea (a variant of something Mike suggested) of doing some kind of install or re-install of the base system. hopefully leaving most of the configuration files of installed programs intact.
what's a clever way of doing this? not sure how to get a listing of these things.
or simpler: reinstall tdelibs in order to reinstall tdeinit?

apt-get install --dry-run --reinstall $(dpkg -l | grep '^ii' | awk '{print $2}')
But I would not reinstall any more than necessary on a failing drive/ssd and it could easily make things worse.
Replace it now. It's not worth your time to do anything else.

I may experiment in the meantime but I got the message.
