rpi: cannot mount flashdrive
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 30 Aug '21

Hi all! I just ran into an interesting problem on rasperrypi: I cannot mount any flashdrive using TDE. udisks2 is installed, my user in group "disk". I get: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 127" Does anybody know what "Launch helper" this refers to and/or what I can do to solve this? Konqueror (file manager, su mode) question.
by Γιώργος Κωστόπουλος 30 Aug '21

30 Aug '21

Hi! :-) I'm using the latest TDE v (14.0.10) on Devuan stable (Beowulf) x64. Konqueror (file manager) in normal mode, works flawlessly. My problem is when I'm choosing (from menu or from konsole), to start it in admin (su, root) mode. it works, with one exception: When going to "Storage" (system:/media), it throws a couple of error messages and displays a blank (empty) page. These messages are: 1) "The TDE mediamanager is not running.". and 2) "During the previous startup, KNotify crashed while instantiating KNotify. Do you want to try again or disable aRts sound output? If you choose to disable aRts output now, you can re-enable it later or select an alternate sound player in the System Notifications control panel.", with the options: "Try Again" and "Disable aRts output". There is actually a workaround: Mount the desired partition with Konqueror in normal mode and then point Konqueror in admin mode to /media/my_username/ and go to the already mounted partition. Any hints? Am I missing something??? :-) G.

Update-notifier applet
by midi-pascal 30 Aug '21

30 Aug '21

Hi all, Since the last TDE stable upgrade (many months ago), the update-notifier applet is not available anymore. Is there a good reason to have it removed from TDE or did it fell in a crack? It was useful to know if some updates are available in a simple way. I am missing this small and efficient little applet. Or is it part of a package I missed? You could check your /var/log/apt/... which usually goes back a year to see if you can figure out which package got uninstalled during the updgrade. problem with sound for bullseye upgrade on amd64: must be root for sound to work on my machine
by James D Freels 26 Aug '21

26 Aug '21

Hello, I am a long-time debian and TDE user, and just recently upgraded my buster amd64 machine to bullseye. As part of this upgrade, I also switch from stable builds to the preliminary stable builds of TDE. For example, tdm-trinity is versioned to read this: 4:14.0.11~pre26-0debian11.0.0+7 . Essentially everything works as expected so far. However, one very nagging problem I currently have is that my sound does not work unless I am rooted. For example, if I issue the command aplay bark.au where bark.au is a snippet sound file of a dog barking, it fails. However, if I issue the command sudo aplay bark.au it works fine. Similar sound playing occurs with any sound-playing app. For example mpg123, vlc, etc., all require a sudo or be logged in as root to work. I have looked all around the WWW to try to find a solution to this problem. The most common solution is to make sure that user ids are in the audio group in the /etc/group configuration file. Of course, I have that, and have confirmed it. This is not a brand new installation after all, but an upgrade. Other common remedies I have tried are to fiddle with the pavucontrol and alsamixer settings. My sound card does not show up in the pavucontrol (pulse doesn't find my sound card), but DOES show up in the alsamixer. I have also looked at the debian sound wiki, and other sources to try to fix this problem. Then, I remembered that I often used this form to learn about debian way back in the days when I first started using debian about 1994 or so. Perhaps I can get some expert help. Maybe a source I can go down a list of troubleshoot to nail this one down. It is obviously a permissions issue (I also looked at device permissions, etc.). I am not sure if this is a debian/11/bullseye problem of a TDE problem, so I have cross-posted this help request to the debian-user mailing list as well (without the TDE information since it is not supported there). Just a bit puzzled and frustrated. P.S. BTW, my sound card is a C-Media, Xonor DG with chip set CMI8788 and uses the oxygen HD audio driver. lspci -v output corresponding: 05:02.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8788 [Oxygen HD Audio] Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Installing TDE on a KDE system.
by Γιώργος Κωστόπουλος 25 Aug '21

25 Aug '21

Hi! :-) I installed lately at one of my systems, a fresh Devuan installation with KDE (stable ver. Beowulf, x64, fully updated). Then I tried installing the latest TDE (the official way). At my 1st try (after installing and updating the GPG DEB package), I tried (via Synaptic), installing the tdebase-trinity package, but Synaptic refused and aborted, indicating broken packages and dependencies. OK. I closed it and opened Konsole -> went root (su -) and I tried apt (apt install tdebase-trinity). This time TDE installed properly, but KDE installation was removed altogether (with the exception of some packages (like SDDM)). I'm perfectly good with it, and I already (after backing it up), formatted and reinstalled Devuan without any desktop this time and I installed TDE on it. Just out of curiosity, is it possible to install TDE alongside with KDE? TIA! :-) Giorgos.

Installing Trinity on Ubuntu

In order to upgrade Trinity Desktop from R14.0.6 to R14.0.10, I have attempted to follow the instructions on https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Ubuntu_Trinity_Repository_Installation_Inst… However, I get this error in synaptic: The repository 'http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-r14.0.x ubuntu Release' does not have a Release file.Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details. The repository 'http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-builddeps-r14.0.x ubuntu Release' does not have a Release file. I have tried adding the list in /etc/apt/sources.list and have switched to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/trinity-ubuntu-bionic.list which results in the same error. The lines, as inserted, read: deb http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-r14.0.x ubuntu main deb http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-builddeps-r14.0.x ubuntu main I have also tried to replace .x with .10 with the same results. SDD puzzle
by dep 20 Aug '21

20 Aug '21

Hi, everybody! (I hope you hear Dr. Nick's voice when you read this line.) My SDD boot . . . isn't booting. Here's how it unfolded: I popped the side off the case so as to install a couple of top-facing exhaust fans, controlled by the motherboard, bring the total case fan count to five (two intake, three exhaust), because with that many fans none ever really spins up, so the computer is next to silent. That's all I did in there. I came nowhere near anything having to do with any of the drives. When I fired up the computer again I got the usual GRUB menu, the second item of which was the 20.04-LTS installation on /dev/sdc1. I chose it. And it booted forthwith -- to the 20.04-LTS installation on /dev/sda1. No errors, nothing. Just booted the wrong drive. The SDD (sdc) is working fine -- I can mount it, navigate in it, read and write to it. Any troubleshooting ideas that don't involve disassembly? This was working fine yesterday and isn't today. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

I did a regular softrware update on my boot drive -- the SSD at /dev/sdc1 -- and got this: Configuration file '/etc/grub.d/10_linux' ==> Deleted (by you or by a script) since installation. ==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version. What would you like to do about it ? Your options are: Y or I : install the package maintainer's version N or O : keep your currently-installed version D : show the differences between the versions Z : start a shell to examine the situation The default action is to keep your current version. *** 10_linux (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? I did "D" but have no clue as to what is right here. After looking at it for a few minutes and ending up no more enlightened than I was when I started, I kept the default. The first line of the thing is +# grub-mkconfig helper script. It contains things such as +# Default to disabling partition uuid support to maintian compatibility with +# older kernels. +GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_PARTUUID=${GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_PARTUUID-true} Ought I have let it install? It seems a bad idea, but that is totally a guess. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

switching to sdd boot drive
by dep 14 Aug '21

14 Aug '21

Greets, folks . . . The nifty little WD 500gb SSD has arrived. I stuck it into a little USB adapter device and seem to have succeeded in dd'ing my boot partition. /dev/sda1, onto it. I have employed the appropriate utility to give it a unique ID, and have labeled its first partition as BOOT. (My home partition, on the existing /dev/sda, is labeled HOME, and /etc/fstab are edited to mount LABEL=BOOT as / and LABEL=HOME as /home.) If things weren't unnecessarily complicated, I could go into the bios and tell it to boot from USB and check the thing before I mounted it permanently. Ah, but . . . There's no nice, normal setting to set boot order in the frigging bios! I can't tell it to just boot from USB and call it a day. Instead, it offers a variety of choices that include booting from a drive that has no operating system at all, so it's not smart or anything like that. I did update-grub on the existing hard drive installation and it saw and added the SSD install. Here things get weird: sometimes it shows it and sometimes it doesn't. Ubuntu in its wisdom has screwed around with the GRUB2 menu. Initially it didn't't show up at all; after I dicked around with it a little a few days ago I got it to appear. Even then, it isn't a GRUB menu as we know it. By fiddling around with the bios I can get a menu that contains the SSD -- /dev/ssd1 -- to show up in the GRUB menu, but sometimes not. And even then, if I select the SSD installation, it does fiddle a little with the SSD on the way in, but boots to the /dev/sda1 install. Now, this is especially problematic because the hard drive boot is, as I mentioned, from /dev/sda1, while /home is /dev/sda3, so just yanking that drive is not among the relatively convenient possibilities. I'd like to boot from it, of course, for reasons including the ability to run update-grub on it, so that the default boot would be from the SSD when it is happily installed in the system. (After which I'd open a terminal and again run update-grub so that GRUB would get everything in its final configuration, with booting from the hard drive possible in case of SSD failure.) Any ideas? Prefarably as opposed to guesses? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

I have gtk3-tqt-engine-trinity installed > but there's only the default style available or use my TDE theme for it > (which breaks it and makes it look worse). For GTK3 I recommend installing the package "gtk3-nocsd". It will force GTK3 applications to refrain from drawing their own titlebar (client-side decoration as the Gnome folks call it) and will restore the TDE titlebars instead. Secondly, I recommend the GTK2/3 theme "TraditionalOk" from the "mate-themes" package of the Debian repositories, which gets quite close to TDE's Plastik theme. Once installed, you should be able to select it for GTK3 in the "GTK Styles and Fonts" panel of the control center. Best regards, Leskala

Raise/Lower is seems backwards
by danapple＠danapple.com 11 Aug '21

11 Aug '21

Hello! For Window Behavior, I have Modifier key + mouse wheel: "Raise/Lower" This is a great feature which I use all of the time. However, the motion of the mouse wheel seems backwards to what the window actually does. When I pull the wheel towards me, the window moves lower in the stack, which means that it appears to move away from me. Of course, I've been using KDE 3.5/Trinity for ten years in this manner, so I have somewhat gotten used to it. :-) However, I think it would be fantastic to have the option to reverse the sense of the mouse wheel of this. What do you think of adding a Lower/Raise option which functions the same as the current Raise/Lower, but with the reversed sense? I think this would be a more natural mapping, at least for some of us, and would not detract from anybody else's use of this functionality. Sincerely, Daniel.

Disable window resize on screen changes?

Hi, all! I am often connected and disconnecting an external monitor from my laptop. Whenever I do so (and sometimes when the laptop/KDE thinks I did, but I didn't) my various application windows are resized. They are often resized to be full-screen size, and often to minimal size. Either way is inconvenient. Is there a way to disable the resizing of windows when the screen geometry changes? It would be convenient for the windows to be *moved* such that they are visible in the new geometry but not to be resized. Sincerely, Daniel.

GRUB menu issue
by dep 08 Aug '21

This came up in conversation here a few days ago -- I was the one asking -- and there being a solution I thought I'd post it here. For reasons unknown, and that make no sense to me, the GRUB menu is not enabled by default in Ubuntu 20,04 and perhaps closely related distributions. To get it back, it's necessary to edit the default /etc/default/grub, changing GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE='hidden" to GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE="menu" and uncommenting GRUB_TERMINAL="console" and after that the GRUB menu is back at boot. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

I have in my /boot directory four kernels -- the running one (5.4.0-80) -- and some rather hoary ones: 4.4.0-124, 3.13.0-147, and 3.13.0-126. i do not currently have nor do I imagine ever having need for the last three. Thought I'd get rid of 'em, but they do not show up in Ubuntu Cleaner or anything else capable of sending them to the bit bucket. So. Anybody know any reason I'd want to keep them and, absent such a reason, anybody know a quick and complete way of deleting them? Used to be they'd always at least show up in Synaptic, but not this time. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Anybody here using an SSD?
by dep 07 Aug '21

07 Aug '21

Hi, everybody! I'm giving some thought to putting an SSD in my desktop machine. The relatively small ones, ~500gb, have gotten pretty cheap, and they seem to be fairly reliable (though I can't say I utterly trust them, though traditional HDs aren't perfect in this regard, either). It seems that if properly employed, one could speed up my system considerably. But I thought I'd ask here before pushing the buy button. So . . . has anyone here used an SSD in a desktop machine? If so, what did you put on it? I have 20tb of storage on the machine, most of it big photo files, and I expect to keep all of it. Absent a compelling reason to the contrary, I'd keep ~/ on a conventional hard drive as well. My initial idea is putting the / partition and swap partitions on the thing, with everything home and below staying put. An additional consideration is my idea of keeping a fully current install where it is now, though not using it unless the SSD blows up. Is this reasonably easy to do, or would it be a giant pita? Anyone here have any experience doing this kind of thing? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Two things, both on the same basic machine, a dell 7010
by Gene Heskett 01 Aug '21

01 Aug '21

Greetings all; 1. I was forced by an errant mill table trapping and crushing my last logitech K360 keyboard with a different keyboard, one which has a row of buttons across the top/rear that among other things includes a power switch, and another that apparently makes it hibernate. It is virtually impossible to pick up this keyboard and take it the 3 or 4 feet to the machine without inadvertently pressing one or more of these buttons. None of them are of any use around potentially dangerous machinery. This is a row of buttons above the F buttons which the control program running the machine makes liberal use of. I need to completely disable that whole row of buttons, or find a source of logitech NOS K-360's. How can I do that? Second, some debian ID10T has decreed that F10 is to bring up a useless to me menu, meaning the exit from mc now demands I find and pick up the $%#@&& mouse and use it to click on the F10 button at the bottom right of the mc screen. Where, in TDE do I find where that hijacking is being done so I can turn it off so I can run mc from the keyboard like I've been doing for 22 years? Thanks all. Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. Re: GTK 3 TQt Engine Styles
by dep 29 Jul '21

29 Jul '21

said Hunter: | GTK3 is an eyesore, but I guess Qt5 is as well. First, I'm on the list, so you needn't cc me. Second, just look at the latest Plasma desktop. It does nothing worth doing that KDE3 didn't do, but it makes those things far more complicated and difficult. In KDE3/TDE, if you want to add an application to Kicker, you drag it there. The end. In current KDE, there's a whole wad of incomprehensible crap you have to go through, and none of it is optional. Nor is this anything new. When the late, unlamented KOffice was coming along, it had filters that would import many file formats -- but not save in them! It would save only in its own little format, which made it entirely useless if the document were to be sent to anyone else. (It wasn't even good for documents you intended to print onto actual physical paper, because KPrinter kinda sucked (this was pre-CUPS). The boys were happy with themselves while users were wondering what the hell the boys were thinking. Asked about it, the boys would reply that if you weren't happy, you were free to write something else. This what I mean when I refer to "enthusiast development." You may or may not have been around during the great Qt war. Gnome had been rumored and promised for a long time and then, in the middle of 1998, along came KDE 1.0 and right out of the box it was great. But it wasn't reported or discussed as such. Instead, it was always "it will do until Gnome gets released." Then came the "and Qt isn't free" cries of doctrinal impurity, that on a whim Troll Tech could kill KDE or make people pay for it or something (as if the trolls were, say, going to become the reprehensible Darl McBride of Caldera). The trolls freed up Qt, at least to the extent that it was no longer even an imagined risk to KDE. Ah, but Gnome is going to be so great! Leading the charge in many ways was Miguel deIcaza, a brilliant programmer and along with Nat Friedman founder of Ximian. (I still have and occasionally wear one of their teeshirts, though I like my Progeny Linux Systems teeshirt more, because it draws comments from a better class of people, the Debian snobs.) Miguel truly is brilliant -- he's the guy who wrote Midnight Commander, a quarter century later still the single most essential application on any Linux machine. And he and Nat are really nice guys; I spent some time with them during the Ximian days, at their office in Boston. But they were both influential and unfair in their appraisal of KDE and Qt. Let it be noted that they both work now, as they have for years, at that bastion of free and open-source software, Microsoft. Much of that is an aside; my point is that the QT suspicion remains, which is the chief reason that Gnome and GTK are taken seriously. But another of the reasons is the attitude by the KDE developers. I remember when the KMail addressbook was a simple, human-editable text file comprising name and email address. (This was when just about everything in Linux was configured by simple, human-editable text files, the passing of which I still mourn. Opening a file in a text editor and scrolling down to change the value of "scrollbar-width=10" gave users enormous power that we no longer have.) The boys decided to make it more elaborate and simply eliminate support for the old format. That was bad enough; worse, their brilliant new addressbook *didn't work*! I remember staying up nights hacking the new KMail to get it to use the old addressbook. The boys not only didn't like this, they were snotty in their boasting about their new addressbook which, again, *didn't work*. They took the same attitude when they made the (fatal, in my estimation) file format decision in KOffice; by the time that got sorted out we had StarOffice, then OpenOffice, then OpenOffice.org, and finally LibreOffice. Perhaps realizing that the Gnomes had no fair criticisms of KDE to offer, the boys set about creating some entirely fair criticisms of KDE. So now both desktops in their current manifestations do whatever they damn well please rather than allow users choices in these things. Gnome can do it because, hey, it's Gnome and freeeeeee unlike Qt-tainted KDE; KCE does it because the boys will be the boys. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

GTK 3 TQt Engine Styles

I use a GTK 3 application ("Revolt" on Debian/Devuan) and its titlebar is so ugly. I tried to use my TDE style for it in "GTK Styles and Fonts" and it only makes it worse. GTK 2 applications look much nicer with Tqt3 integration, but GTK 3... It's an eyesore no matter what, to say the least. This brings me to my question - is there any way to make GTK 3 apps integrate more nicely into TDE? I have gtk3-tqt-engine-trinity installed but there's only the default style available or use my TDE theme for it (which breaks it and makes it look worse).

Logitech USB Volume Not Changing
by Edward 27 Jul '21

27 Jul '21

I have Logitech USB stereo headphones with boom mic plugged into USB. If I use its in-line control to change the volume, a volume indicator appears on-screen. The progress bar is blue when the volume is at the low setting, then gradually changes to white when the volume is increased. Except, the volume coming out of the headphones, is not changing. If I need to adjust the volume, I must launch the PulseAudio Volume Control and change it there. Is what I'm describing above, the correct behavior? Trinity likes to freeze randomly and I can only fix the problem by going into a tty and using top to kill Xorg (and take me back to TDM). Printing PDF's [possibly OT]
by Edward 23 Jul '21

23 Jul '21

Since installing Debian, I've had some issues printing PDF's, in that the resulting printout doesn't look exactly like the PDF. This could be due to the fonts installed with Debian, where they are possibly not the same or ideal fonts for PDF's. In addition to KPDF (which installed with TDE), I tried: * KGhostView * evince * qpdfview * Okular * GIMP * LibreOffice Draw * Firefox None of these printed the PDF as expected. So I will be uninstalling all of the above, except for KPDF (so as not to cause any potential issues with TDE), LibreOffice Draw and Firefox. I also have both the Vivaldi (stable and Snapshot) and Chromium web browsers installed. Chromium does not offer an option to open a file. Vivaldi does and in its print dialog, there is an option 'Print as image'. I selected this and the PDF printed perfectly. -- Linux. A Continual Learning Experience. Does this exist someplace?
by dep 09 Jul '21

09 Jul '21

Hi, everybody! There's something I had with OS/2 that I haven't had since then despite searching for it. Such a thing, if we had it for the various Linices, would be pretty cool and pretty useful. I paid ~$50 for a little OS/2 utility that let one fashion his own cursors and mouse pointers (for the GUI, the WorkPlace Shell). Big whoop, right? Ah, but . . . you could make them so they would be the *opposite* of whatever they were over, even if they were over two or more different colors. This made them tremendously visible and now, 23 years after switching to Linux, I still miss them. Oh, and after a user-specified time of inactivity, the mouse pointer, I-bar pointer, etc., would disappear until the mouse is touched again. The program created the pointers; they could then be put on machines that didn't have the program, and they would work just fine on those (as long as they were running OS/2). Does anyone know of a TDE-compatible mouse theme that does most of the above? The switch to opposite color (I set it to work as greyscale, because the oposite of verious colors can be awful, so it merely took the luminance of whatever was beneath) is most important, though the auto-fade would be great, too -- then one can select a position in text without partially obscuring it. If we don't have it, we should, though I do not know if it is possible under any of the Linux desktops. Even 30 years ago, the WPS was pretty sophisticated. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://www.athensnews.com/opinion/columns/the_view_from_mudsock_heights/

knetworkmanager icon takes a while to appear after hibernate
by Gianluca Interlandi 08 Jul '21

08 Jul '21

Hi! I noticed that after resuming from hibernating in TDE, the knetworkmanager icon in the tray takes 1-2 minutes until it appears and is functional. The internet connection works correctly in the mean time, but the tray icon cannot be used for a while. Is there a way to restart knetworkmanager so that the tray icon reappears faster in case one has to change the LAN settings after resuming? Using Konqueror for the web
by Hunter 06 Jul '21

06 Jul '21

Good morning everybody =) I'd like to ask, does anyone *actually* use Konqueror to regularly browse the internet? I have used no better file manager than Konqueror but the web aspect seems to be hindered. I don't think its a fault of Konqueror itself but the way web design has changed. You can test this yourself by using wiby.me (an early web design search engine) and looking at sites indexed on it. These usually display fine in Konqueror, but when you go to a modern website like DuckDuckGo for example it doesn't display properly at all. It's a bummer since Konqueror is one of the hallmarks of TDE for me, although I don't know much about the web browser (KHTML) aspect I believe its integrated into some Trinity applications which is a really nice feature. I first really thought of this when I used KlamAV's virus browser function (which I assume is using KHTML integrated) but Trend Micro website (being that it's likely changed a lot) doesn't display properly. For the time being I'm using SeaMonkey since my usual browser, Pale Moon, does not take too kindly to *BSD.. And since it's a suite with a mail client as well I'm not using Kmail. I might switch to Firefox, but if there is any way to use Konqueror I would love to. There's so many options that far outweigh most dedicated web browsers such as its adblock filters and the ability to disable JavaScript which gets rid of any need for an add-on like uBlock Origin. I completely understand that working on it to display modern web pages is probably too difficult since Trinity's KHTML/Konqueror is older, this is just me dreaming here. Ideally I'd like to be able to make full use of a TDE web browser and the applications that work with it =) - Hunter aka hunter0one

Hibernate from TDE
by Gianluca Interlandi 06 Jul '21

06 Jul '21

Hi! Upon clikcing on "Log Out..." I am presented with various choices. I am confused which one correpsonds to hibernate (suspend to disk). Is it "Freeze Computer" or "Suspend Computer"? What I need is the memory to be written to the swap partition of the disk and power turned off. In other words, which one of these calls `systemctl hibernate`, or is a different mechanism used? I had to fiddle with /etc/systemd/sleep.conf and add: HibernateMode=shutdown to make hibernation work correctly. Suspend to RAM (often also called "Sleep") makes the laptop hang, so I need to avoid it (unless I find a fix). Thanks! Hi all! Could anybody tell me where /opt/trinity/share/apps/imagerotation/orient.py and /opt/trinity/share/apps/imagerotation/exif.py are used? The only reference I found was in /opt/trinity/bin/jpegorient which by itself is referenced in /opt/trinity/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/jpegorient.desktop ... but the defined "rotate" operation is not to be found anywhere in konqueror, neither in the context menu of a jpg file nor in the properties dialog. information for TDE developers: Debian/Buster/10.10 with backports
by James D Freels 01 Jul '21

01 Jul '21

This is not a request for help, but rather, a note of information for the development team; especially for the Debian/Buster version of the code. I am running Debian/Buster/10.10 stable release. Just today, upon encouragement from my son (who is also a Linux advocate), I updated my kernel and nvidia driver to the latest version now offered through the debian/buster-backports portal. This brought the kernel from v4.19 to v5.10, and the nvidia driver from 418.197 to 460.73. This turned out to be a significant improvement for using TDE and my machine in general. In particular, the memory management is much cleaner, and the response of the entire system system much quicker. So far, everything seems to work much better. I might suggest you give this a try. Greets, folks . . . This is a weird one. I unfortunately have the RAW-handling photo application LightZone as forst in my RAW file association, so when I accidentally clicked on a RAW file today it opened. (It didn't open that file, btw, because LightZone is flaky and opens what it had open the last time it was run, just one of several reasons I really don't like it.) I tried to close LightZone, but it wouldn't close. I did 'killall lightzone', but nope, still there. Mouse arrow turns to point-left-horizontally when I enter the window. Top reports no LightZone processes running. I have deleted LightZone and its configuration files. Still no joy. I have a *huge* file copy underway -- should take the next 10 hours or so. So I'd just as soon not reboot. Oddly, I can still moved the window around, maximize it, minimize it -- just not close it entirely. It seems to have just enough aslive that I can't get a "window not responding" error. Nothing inside the window, which is to say in the program itself, responds at all. Whatcha think? Any idea how to kill it? Re: additional kmail issue
by dep 26 Jun '21

26 Jun '21

I've already made inquiry to the ProtonMail Bridge people. The bridge is a very big wad of stuff that encrypts and otherwise handles mail before sending it to ProtonMail. It on the Kmail end, it wants KMail to send the mail to 127.0.0.1, using a long, hashed password that the bridge generates. I've used it since early beta. I haven't heard back from ProtonMail, which isn't a surprise -- it's late Saturday in Switzerland. The bridge supports a very limited number of clients -- ProtonMail is primarily a webmail service -- and KMail is not among them, though setting up KMail to use it was fairly trivial, even in early beta. On the rare occasion it hasn't worked, it has thrown a message saying that it couldn't log in to 127.0.0.1 and the problem is probably the password, but restarting the bridge and KMail virtually always has fixed this. Now, though, there are no errors thrown -- it says there's no new mail even though there clearly is new mail, as witness their webmail and the ElectronMail client that accesses the webmail hooks. I'd check a different account with KMail if I had any, but I don't. OTOH, using ProtonMail's apps on, for instance, the iPad works normally. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://www.athensnews.com/opinion/columns/the_view_from_mudsock_heights/ ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Original Message ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ On Saturday, June 26th, 2021 at 4:39 PM, Mavridis Philippe <mavridisf(a)gmail.com> wrote: > Could it be then that the problem is on ProtonMail's end? Migration of services - 1. web server
by Slávek Banko 24 Jun '21

24 Jun '21

Hi all, I'm launching a series of threads related to the migration of individual services. The main web server was listed first. -- Migration status -- The web server is already successfully migrated to the virtual machine on the tde-box. It was migrated almost unchanged. The changes concerned only: 1. Service alerts - instead of a manually maintained page, the real status of services is now displayed. Additional work is required to ensure that the retrieval status of the services is properly distributed among the individual servers where the services are active (eg, the mail server for the status of the mailing list services). 2. API documentation - search is not active, instead of Qt3 documentation TQt documentation is now published, instead of old KDE documentation, TDE documentation is published (tdelibs and tdebase). Further changes will be needed here. However, there will be a need to discuss how to maintain and generate documentation. 3. Supported RFEs - the page is now static and since we do not currently have a way to accept monetary donations, this page is suitable for removal and replacement in a new way sometime in the future. 4. List of active mirrors - now provides a better overview of the status of mirrors. -- What needs to be done -- 1. Webhook for automatic update when pushing commits to git. 2. New bot for recording history / interaction on IRC and Jabber rooms. Currently, IRC history is being retrieved from the old Tim's server. 3. There could be some small changes in style - for example, for better display on mobile devices. 4. The menu could be revised - there some links are almost duplicated - Documentation × API Docs, some fully duplicated Home/Contact × Support, Bugs × Support/Bugs, Wiki × Support/Wiki. 5. Some changes in the content. -- More ideas and suggestions? Does everything work fine with the web server? Do you have any other ideas and suggestions? Cheers -- Slávek

Umlaute and other keyboard special characters
by Gianluca Interlandi 23 Jun '21

23 Jun '21

Dear TDE users, I just installed TDE on openSUSE Leap 15.2 and I really like it. Thank you so much! I have a question about special keyboard characters such as the german Umlaute ä, ö, ü or the italian/french accents. Normally in Linux you can hold down the key <Shift> and then press <Ctrl>, which sets you into "Compose mode". Then, you can press for example the high quotes " and then a voyel like a, o, u and they are displayed with the dots on top. This is not working in openSUSE Leap 15.2 with TDE (same with LXDE). It just prints '"a'. In past versions, I had to set the variable QT_IM_MODULE to xim, but in openSUSE Leap 15.2 it is already set to xim and I still cannot compose Umlaute or accents. If anybody has any ideas or has figured it out, please let me know. Thanks in advance! Is there a quick hack for this?
by dep 21 Jun '21

21 Jun '21

Hi, everybody! In that gThumb, which I used for years, has had everything useful about it removed, I sought alternatives. I often need to edit IPTC data embedded in photographs; while gThumb used to do this well it now does it poorly. For most uses, I employ the excellent Photini (https://photini.readthedocs.io/en/latest/other/installation.html ), but from time to time I need just to pop into a picture to check or edit the IPTC data. The Trinity version of Gwenview is good for this. But to get to those data, one needs Plugins > Images > Metadata >Edit IPTC. Possibly because it comes apparently from a plugin, there's no way I can find to shorten this chain -- certainly can't move it to, say, a toolbar. So I'm wondering if in fact there is a way to do just that, either move it to a top-level menu or to add it to the toolbar. I realize that this would probably involve screwing around with the code. And yes, I know it's probably in opposition to standards set by the World Health Organization or UEFA or somebody. I'm just hoping that someone here is familiar enough with the code to give me an idea what I need to change to produce the desired ressult. To put it another way. If I right click on an image in Gwenview I get a menu. That menu includes "External tools." There is an item there, "Configure External Tools." It lets you call any program you have on your computer. I can configure it to call Word 5.5 running in a DOS emulator! And, if there were a way to call the metadata editor from there, job done. Ah, but . . . I have no idea what Gwenview is doing, up there deep in the bowels of the Plugins menu, to cause the metadata editor, a/k/a /opt/trinity/share/services/kipiplugin_metadataedit.desktop , to appear. Byut there is surely something that Gwenview does to call it, and if I knew what that was I could use it as the command argument to call the thing from the menu generated by the RMB on the image I intend to improve. Trinity on openSUSE Leap 15.2
by Gianluca Interlandi 19 Jun '21

Hi! I am planning to install the Trinity desktop on openSUSE Leap 15.2. I have the following questions: 1) On the Instructions website it says: "2. Configure the supplementary PACKMAN repository". I am curious why that is. Do the Trinity packages depend on packages in the PACKMAN repositories or is it so that the most up to date multimedia packages are installed? 2) Is it possible to use the kwin-decor-suse2-0.4.1 style in the Trinity desktop? I understand that KDE3 and Trinity packages cannot coexist, but would it be in principle possible to download the RPM: https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_Leap_15.2/x86… le-suse2-0.4.1-lp152.57.2.x86_64.rpm and move the files to folders where Trinity would find them? Or, is there a window decoration style in Trinity that looks similar to SUSE2 decor? 3) What about the font "misc-console"? This used to be available in KDE3, but I do not see a similar package in the Trinity repositories. Thank you very much in advance for helping me with these questions! Is there any saving of KMenu?
by dep 17 Jun '21

17 Jun '21

Greets, folks . . . I just now spent five minutes looking in vain for PDF Arranger in my kmenu. I have no doubt it's there, but in the decades of KDE3x and TDE I've yet to have the kmenu search box work even once; meanwhile, items in the submenus are spashed across them with no sense nor reason I can find -- Settings, System, and Utilities are in many respects one submenu distributed at random across three. Install a new application? Where is it in the kmenu? It's not a menu, it's a *game*! (Example: I have the Gramps genealogy application installed. It's even on the kmenu. Wanna know where it got stuck? Office > Database.) This doesn't matter if you have just a few applications installed. More than that and you're screwed. The problem is exacerbated by new applications being installed any old place within a submenu. Might be at the top. Might be at the bottom. Might be in the middle. (And of course the classic favorite, in some other sub- or sub-submenu entirely.) To make the game even more challenging, there's no practical way to bring order to it. There's no way to arrange the applications in alphabetical order within a submenu. And for advanced players, kmenu is festooned with some script that without user intervention prevents the desktop from starting at all! Surely there's got to be a way to automagically (or let users) organize the kmenu in TDE. Because as it stands, and has stood for decades, it's an unholy mess. Is there a recipe or script or, well, anything? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://www.athensnews.com/opinion/columns/the_view_from_mudsock_heights/

what fresh kmenu hell is this?
by dep 13 Jun '21

now i was merrily editing my kmenu. saved it, opened it -- and it has sprouted a heretofore nonexistent category of "most used applications." it definitely wasn't there an hour ago. how do i make it go away? if you like it, i'm glad it's there for you. but i don't want it! -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://www.athensnews.com/opinion/columns/the_view_from_mudsock_heights/

Does opening /opt/trinity/bin in konqueror get you where you want to be? You can add a non-TDE button to a panel (see attached) and click on it to bring up the "menu". --Mike

Installing TDE R14.0.10 on FreeBSD 13?
by Hunter 07 Jun '21

07 Jun '21

Hello everyone, I was advised to come here since I'm aware that there are at least a few that use TDE on FreeBSD. I have the port from the gitea repository but I've had a number of issues. I'm still fairly new to FreeBSD so sorry if I seem inexperienced. I am especially new to using ports since I only have one or two on my system. Let me try to elaborate what I've done so far: I first attempted installing TDE in the beginning of May, which is when I first switched from Devuan to FreeBSD 13.0-RELEASE. This was right after the R14.0.10 release. I had the freebsd TDE folder and assumed I needed to build it with make install clean, as most ports are, and I (from what I remember) think it worked until I hit a snag. I stopped there and settled with Xfce which I was already using for the time being and completely forgot what the snag was. I then tried it again yesterday, as I missed using TDE very much (as its most certainly my favorite desktop environment, which is why I'm subbed to these lists now =D ). I removed my desktop environment and login manager (Xfce + LightDM), and cloned the tde-packaging freebsd port once again. I had to run /make install clean///as root (I used doas, probably also did this the first attempt and just forgot), and everything was good and well until about 30 minutes into the make process when I received an error about pinentry-tqt. You can see my issue here: https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/TDE/tde-packaging/issues/86. At this point, I was in a conversation on Matrix and a TDE user on Slackware was trying to help me out the best he could. I had been trying to fix it all day and by the end of it had a massive headache so I quit and installed Fluxbox temporarily (needed a way to communicate easier as well). I had tampered with the make directory quite a bit without backing it up so now I cloned it again and am making sure to keep an unmodified copy (so I don't have to go through the process of getting it all again with my horrible internet..) So this morning I'm back at square one, which is why I'm here to ask how did any of you install it on FreeBSD? Did you run into the same issues, and is there any idea how I can go about getting it to work? I feel like I'm probably doing something wrong. -- - Hunter aka hunter0one

Manually enter the folder of the package you like to buld, "make install clean", move to the next. Don't use the "big" Makefiles: /usr/ports/x11/trinity/Makefile .../applications/Makefile .../core/Makefile .../dependencies/Makefile .../libraries/Makefile - just use them to determine the order in wich the packages need to be built. r14-xdg-update?
by dep 03 Jun '21

03 Jun '21

greetings, everybody . . . having just completed the ordeal of moving my ubuntu 18.04 install from a 2-tb drive that was popping up increasingly strident messages warning of its impending doom to a 6-tb drive and thus enduring the process of going from MBR to UEFI, the time fast approaches for me to go 18.04 > 20.04. before i do that, though, i thought i'd check and see if there's any definitive solution to the r14-xdg-update error messages that have come here at the startup of TDE (R14.0.10, currently) for many months now. in that i rarely reboot, it's not been a huge problem, but i presume they're there for a reason and before i upgrade i thought i'd try to fix the problem. i searched the archives and found no evidence of a solution. so: is there a solution? if there isn't, is there any harm in just clicking the (several) boxes that pop up and living with the perceived error? that's what i've been doing, but i've never been happy about it. thanks very much in advance for any useful information that might be proffered. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://www.athensnews.com/opinion/columns/the_view_from_mudsock_heights/

correct apt repo line for R14.newest?
by Gene Heskett 03 Jun '21

03 Jun '21

I thought it unusual that this machine was not getting updates, while the one machine tool machine I had tde installed on was. So I looked at the repo list in synaptic and found the deb line for r14 had become unchecked. Checked it, and refreshed. That brought in 313 packages, or tried to, reporting that it wasn't successfull at pulling them all. But when it had installed what it could, I then did another refresh, but it then did not mark any more new ones. Ack the log, the server hung up on me. Since I was then about 110 days of uptime and that many updates it needed to restart the dbus apache2 and tdm kin. I checked them, clicked fwd and was greeted by a bash login on tty1. Logged in and did a sudo reboot. A bit slower than I recall, but but a lot was changed and things seem to be running ok now. But I am left with a suspicion I might not be pulling from the latest mirror. ISTR it was moved several months back, so would someone be kind enough to paste the latest repo line to me? Thanks a bunch. Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
