Darkness ISO March 2025

Hi all! I just uploaded my "Darkness" iso, march 2025 version. As usual bleeding edge Devuan + TDE :) A note on Installation: Don't forget installing the bootloader. What do you get: - Devuan Testing - TDE 14.2.0 (dev branch) - Openscad - Firefox v135 - Kernel 6.12.17 - most firmware blobs - dark theme I have removed [i]Zim Desktop Wiki[i] due to the vast number of dependencies it pulls in. An extremely disappointing wallpaper...

Hi folks. I was reading the release notes for R14.1.5 before I started a system upgrade and noticed there was a new wallpaper added to tdeartwork. At first, I liked it, but then I took a closer look and was extremely disappointed. Do we not have any quality control for TDE artwork? I'm certainly not the only one who noticed how bad this looks. I have no issue with using AI for artwork, but this is embarassing. There was very clearly no attempt to polish or improve this at all. How did this make it in? Surely we can do better than this, no? kmail update trouble

Hi all, I had some spare time available so I decided to do a dist-upgrade (MX-Linux 23, TDE on psb). Now habve 14.1.6 ~development (and the latest MX 23, whatever it's called). Now, I can't start kmail anymore - this is sent from the older MX 21 install. The error message is: kmail: error while loading shared libraries: libgpgme++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory libgpgme++.so.5 is a link to libgpgme++.so.5.0.0 in /opt/trinity/lib Bug? Workaround?

I'd love if certain Plasma features would be ported

Nothing that will go against Trinity's philosophy (I don't want to lose this lightweight DE either and I don't want another plasma), but stuff like: - An option to use kwin-x11 as a window manager as well as configuring kwin effects (wobbly windows, etc.) so using an outdated compiz or beryl/emerald is not needed to have cool stuff. - Desktop notifications for applications that integrate with Plasma's notification system. - Kdeconnect capability to integrate with mobile phones. - A visual tablet configuration window, even if it's just a wrapper for xsetwacom. May add more later on if I think of something that wouldn't go against Trinity's philosophy, but would be useful to have.

Is there a way to always start certain app on specific virtual desktop?

So there's that app I always want to start on specific virtual desktop. It doesn't offer any command line parameters to do so, is there a way to make TDE always put windows belonging to a specific executable on specific desktop?

[Bug] Panel can't be set to autohide, because then it can't be brought back by moving mouse to the screen edge

So, when you set up a panel to autohide after certain amount of time (doesn't matter if it's the main panel or additional, user-made one) and check "bring back when user moves mouse" (the checkbox that lists all the different variations where mouse could be moved to bring back the panel, like upper-left screen corner, left edge, bottom edge, etc.) after clicking apply and letting the panel hide, moving mouse to the selected edge does nothing and the panel becomes completely inaccessible. I have to manually hide panels with buttons, because otherwise I can't bring it back. No idea if it's the right place to bring bugs like that, just wanted to let you know as I've decided to main TDE from now on (so expect more reports like that, sadly can't contribute any code to fix those as I am not confident enough to write a good code and also I don't have a second machine to test stuff on).

TDM "greeter screen" location(s) non-themed

With two or three displays, sometimes the login panel shows up on one screen only, but on others, it may be two, or may be three. Is there something in tdmrc that I'm missing about GreeterScreen=, or not understanding (near top of file) that can control how many on which greeter appears? Absent a specific GreeterScreen= setting, typically either the lowest resolution screen seems to acquire focus, or first choice goes to connection using the oldest technology (1VGA>2DVI>3HDMI>4DP) if not more than one having it. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Why I've decided to fully switch to TDE

Plasma got so bad over the years that when I switched to Linux over a year ago (switched september 2024, over a year before Win10 EOL) I didn't feel any different. Apps still took a minute or so to open, the entire desktop was laggy AF, the mouse cursor itself kept freezing (literally the same thing I experienced on Windows on the same machine), and yes, it happened both on Wayland and X11, so I can't even blame Wayland for that one. And the time it takes from the login screen to the functional desktop is enormous. Trinity (and pretty much all other DEs, maybe except GNOME which is trash anyway so it's okay) on the other hand is lightning fast and very functional. I don't even know where KDE did go so wrong, because I remember using KDE4 in ~2010-2014 (when I used Linux last time) and it was fast and functional, even with all graphical additions, animations, etc. and plasma desktop with plenty of plasmoids, on much weaker hardware (Geforce 9600, yes, it was before GTX was a thing, Core2Quad Q9450, 4GB RAM). Plasma has basically two speed settings: Fast (right after installation, don't touch anything and not customize a thing) and laggy AF after even the slightest bit of customization. TDE has much more reasonable resource requirements.

strange things happening ...

Apologies if this is post is not specific to TDE; but honestly, I don't know what to make of it. I said awhile back that my system seems to be getting unstable, though I cannot determine the causes. This has been happening more frequently over the past year or more ... ever since I mentioned that we had some flooding here (last winter?), and it seemed to affect our network here in this building. (I ought to add, if it is not evident, that I have no control over the network; my complaints too many to repeat here, and may not be related.) I am still in the process of moving, so I don't have a lot of time to spend chasing down bugs, if that's what this is; I keep hoping that these issues will resolve themselves with a system upgrade. We have stretches of a week or two where the network seems fine, then out of the blue, suddenly my machine starts freezing up any time I have a network connection; sometimes, indeed, the open connection is there and available, but I have not actually logged into the network. Usually I disable the network if I am not using it, but when I first boot up, the network is always there and available. And sure enough, my machine freezes up. I just went through this earlier today: when I went online to check my email first thing this morning, it wasn't more than five minutes and the machine froze up; I waited more than half an hour, then decided to do a hard shutdown, and boot up again. Then, as soon as I booted up and got into the Trinity desktop, the same thing happened, and the system froze up. (I wasn't online, just that the network was available.) At last, it seemed that the machine recognized mouse movement, and I somehow got it running more or less normally again. My mouse icon showed a kind of crosshair icon, which is not actually available to my mouse; so I was a bit puzzled about that. Then, once I got into my working desktop, started setting up, I noticed that some autostart programs had not started,: audacious, for example, had to be started manually. Also, tdenetworkmanager crashed, and lately has been crashing rather a lot. After all was set up and I was getting into my work, I noticed in my home folder 5 plaintext files (or at least, they seem to be text files); they are named: builtins getopt locale signal sys -- but they have no content. It may be that they are some different kind of file; the system just tells me that they are empty documents. Nothing like this has ever happened before, and I am concerned about these strange manifestations of files, apparently without any doing on my part. They have rw-r-r permissions, under my user name; which to me indicates that they are supposed to be files that the system must be able to read. For my personal stuff, which the system doesn't need to read, I make the permissions rw only under my user name. If anybody can offer some insights, of suggestions about how to unravel this mystery, I would be grateful. Bill P.S. I just did a system upgrade. I am still running Devuan Daedalus, waiting for the next LTS release, whatever and whenever that will be.

[Bug] Mouse scroll becomes intermittently inoperative in Firefox for some weird reason

The reason I say intermittently is because there's a workaround for when the mouse scroll stops scrolling in Firefox and it's... kinda weird. You first need to switch to another app where mouse scroll still works (or launch one), in my case I use Telegram for that as this is what my family uses to communicate with each other, scroll there for a bit, then alt-tab back to Firefox and the mouse scroll suddenly works. And yes, you have to scroll in the other app, otherwise when you alt-tab back to Firefox (using the newest 145 here), the scroll still won't work otherwise. Pretty weird.
