Switch to trinity
by phiebie＠drei.at 03 Feb '19

03 Feb '19

Debian Buster, KDE 3.5.10. aptitude As more and more software-updates clash with their dependencies against what KDE needs or provides, I wanted to install trinity, preliminary stable, alongside KDE. KDE should stay operational till I had transferred my settings and programs aso to trinity. No go! Tdebase was fetched and seemingly installed, but when I restarted the computer and wanted to start KDE, there was only a black screen with the mouse-cursor and whatever I did with keyboard or mouse, nothing happened. Cold reboot to clear memory, same thing. Okay, let's then have a look at trinity. A blue screen with the logo appeared and after a few seconds something like "no ..... available check your installation"and I only could close that window via a warm reboot. KDE gave me the black screen again and also TDE said "check installation". Installed TDE again, same results as before. Half an afternoon had passed with no desktop still available. Glad, that I had backupped my system before the experiment and could restore my working KDE. So there's also a clash between TDE and KDE, incredible! Where should I look for the culprit for this disaster? Kind regards.

KPDF Print wants to convert my document to...what?
by J Leslie Turriff 30 Jan '19

30 Jan '19

I don't often print PDF documents, but recently when I have tried to do so I have been stymied when KPDF told me that my document needs conversion. It also says something about using a non-CUPS print server, which is not my case. I have attached screen shots of the relevant message dialogs that KPDF produces. When I click through these, most of the time KPDF just disappears, but sometimes I see the third dialog first. I can find no information on what it's really wanting or trying to do, so I have no clue as to which MIME type to choose. My understanding is that somewhat recently, Linux has switched from printing PDFs directly to converting them to PostScript; perhaps that has something to do with this? What is the proper way to navigate these dialogs? Leslie

tdekbdledsync
by Russell Brown 29 Jan '19

29 Jan '19

Hmmm.... tdekbdledsync is trying to control the wrong keyboard LEDs for remote displays. We have a number of remote users (XDMCP/tdm) and each one has a tdekbdledsync process running with /dev/tty0 and /dev/input/eventX open on the server (the machine hosting tdm) and not the remote workstation. This is obviously wrong. Ideally, tdekbdledsync should be smarter and not try to control the keyboard LEDs on remote displays but as it isn't, can I globally disable tdekdbledsync? (we don't run X on the main server console). I looked at the tdm source and in kgapp.cpp I see: if (trinity_desktop_synchronize_keyboard_lights) { kbdl = new TDEProcess; *kbdl << TQCString( argv0, strrchr( argv0, '/' ) - argv0 + 2 ) + "tdekbdledsync"; kbdl->start(); } but I can't find what sets "trinity_desktop_synchronize_keyboard_lights". WYSIWYG HTML editor that outputs clean HTML code?
by Michael 28 Jan '19

28 Jan '19

Hi All, Completely off topic, and I understand that this is like asking who has the Holy Grail... Anyone have good experience with a WYSIWYG HTML editor that outputs plain, clean HTML code? Anything close to say LibreOffice Writer or MS Word that exports/outputs regular HTML and not a thousand lines of trash to say “Hello World?” While I’m wishing on a star, if it also has a spell-checker and a table of contents creator based on H tags nirvana might just be found! Best, Thanks, Michael

How does one globally disable device notifications
by Russell Brown 25 Jan '19

25 Jan '19

Hi, We've recently moved from 4:14.0.4 on Debian jessie to 4:14.0.6 on Debian stretch and all of our users (remote displays via tdm/XDMCP) are getting device popups when a usb device is connected (daily change of SSD for backup for example). How do I globally disable this? I've tried putting a kdedrc in my global profile directory containing: >[Module-mediamanager][$i] >autoload=false > >[Module-medianotifier][$i] >autoload=false but that doesn't seem to do it. Random xorg & kernel errors, keep logging me out of TDE, and power management wonky
by Hawke Robinson 24 Jan '19

24 Jan '19

Greetings, First, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TDE! The horrible things they have done to KDE from 4.x onward seem unspeakably bad. I am so very grateful you revived this much more productive interface. I am however having some trouble and not sure how much is TDE, video driver, touchpad/touchscreen driver, kernel, and/or other hardware driver issues. If it isn't TDE itself, I appreciate help isolating which components to tackle first. I haven't figured out the causality yet, and it is random seeming but frequent. Periodically the little crash indicator red light icon shows up in the lower right corner of taskbar. Sometimes the message when I mouse hover over the icon: "A problem in the xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.20.1-5.1.el7 package has been detected". Other times it is something about a kernel error, and then before I can read more, I get logged out of TDE and brought to the login screen. Also the screen will dim down considerably some times, seemingly randomly, appearing to be around 10-25% brightnness, but command line cranking it up to 1.0 barely raises it up. I have to fully reboot the system to get the screen brightness back to normal. It _might_ (and I emphasize guessing heavily) coincide with multitouch on the touchpad, but really can't trigger it reliably. It usually happens faster if I am using the laptop, but sometimes I come back and it has logged itself out without my being there at all. Sometimes it seems to trigger the logout when I am using 2-finger or 3-finger scrolling on the touchpad. Sometimes the touchpad makes the mouse jump around. Other times it behaves just fine. There is also a weird behavior if I accidentally click two fingers on the touchpad 3-4 Konsole screens appear, and I click on the X in upper right hand corner of each window to close, when I click on the 2nd to last one, 3 more appear! The only way to stop that is to type "exit" in each rather than using the mouse. Weird behaviors, but seem interconnected somewhat? Everything else seems to be working well though I haven't tried any 3d tests yet. The "Automatic But Reporting Tool" shows "My (0)" and "System (4) but in the right hand column shows "No problems detected!". I'm not sure where to begin as far as logs that might be useful, so could use a little guidance. There is a lot of whitenoise (to me at least) on the logs, so suggestions would be appreciated. This is a very new 2 in 1 laptop, and I wonder if it has anything to do with the drivers between the touch screen (which I only rarely use) and the touchpad (use a lot), and/or something with the video drivers. But I'm totally shotgunning here. Specifications information here: http://www2.techtalkhawke.com/news/linux-on-dell-xps-9575-15-inch-2-in-1-1 Also at end of posting linked above are log outputs from /var/log/messages, tdm.log, Xorg.0.log, ~/.xsession-error, etc. Appreciate help isolating the issues or if this is common/known issue on this new hardware, any known fixes or workarounds to try. Thanks kindly!

Issues with SHIFT-ALT-TAB on R14.0.5
by Michael 19 Jan '19

19 Jan '19

With TDE: R14.0.4 Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS ALT-TAB brings up the task switcher and continuing to hold down ALT while tapping TAB moves the selection down the list. SHIFT-ALT-TAB moves the selection up the list. With TDE: R14.0.5 MX-18 ALT-TAB works. SHIFT-ALT-TAB doesn’t, it moves the selection down the list instead of up. Anyone else having issues with SHIFT-ALT-TAB on R14.0.5? Best, Michael

removing stuff that's not trinity
by dep 19 Jan '19

19 Jan '19

a week or so ago i upgraded to ubuntu 18.04 from 16.04. i do not think the protonmail bridge problems have anything to do with this, but in any event it brought a lot of plasma, etc., stuff that i do not want. i see that i have an application -- looks like kcontrol, superficially -- to configure sddm. i am using tdm. is there a decent recipe for the removal of kde/plasma stuff? i suppose it's worthwhile to keep gnome (or something) around in case for some reason i can't get into tde, and of course there are gnome/gtk apps i use under tde. but it seems as if the upgrade brought me a load of stuff that i don't want, and i'm not sure that it plays nicely. i can do a search on "trinity" of course, to find tde packages, but i don't know of any search term that limits the results to non-trinity kde applications and libraries. dep Sent with ProtonMail. kmail, next update request?
by Gene Heskett 19 Jan '19

19 Jan '19

Greetings all; On the next kmail update would it be possible to add a popup for the case of the indice fixing when it gets lost? The time lag between clicking on the OK in that event, can be long enough you've forgotten you started kmail once already, and its cpu load while doing that is quite minimal, and I suspect half or more of my indice problems are probably caused by two copies of kmail fighting over the indice files. So some sort of an I'm busy advisory popup might prevent me from starting another copy. Leave it up until the main window is opened and its ready for business. Thank you. Cheers, Gene Heskett --

Differences between Stable and R14.0.x repos on OpenSuSE (Was: Konqueror crashes)

A rough guess is probably "no". Hope this helps. Cheers Michele I've gotten tired of Konqueror crashing because of kpdf, so I'm trying to prepare to upgrade to R14.0.x. For R14.0.5 (Stable), OpenSuSE has two repositories: * http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/trinity/rpm/opensuse15.0/trini… * http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/trinity/rpm/opensuse15.0/trini… for R14.0.x, there appears to be only one repository: * http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/PunisherHD:/Trinity:/r14.0.… YaST seems to be happy with this single repository, but I just wanted to make sure if there is indeed only a single one for R14.0.x, or if I've missed something, or if it's supposed to work with the R14.0.5 noarch? Also, when migrating from R14.0.5 to R14.0.x, should I uninstall and reinstall (which seems safest)? Thanks, Leslie

Please review 'MX Linux Trinity Repository Installation Instructions' Wiki page

Hi All, Using the Debian/Devuan instructions I successfully installed TDE on MX Linux. I started with a copy of the Devuan installation page and added a few extra bits I would have wanted if I’d seen the page ‘cold’ or been a noob as they say. It’s here: https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/MX_Linux_Trinity_Repository_Installation_In… Be gentle, it’s my first time ;) # # # As a side note, it’s a pretty nice distribution. Full disk encryption (FDE) seems to work, even the un-mounting during shutdown (which is broken on Devuan). And in the useless but cool category it has a ‘battery’ applet that populates the taskbar that even shows the percent power left in the battery of my wireless mouse. I’m pretty sure it migrated over from Xfce that’s installed by default? Best, Michael

Trinity configuration & how to disable events audio sound?
by Nicolas Bercher 10 Jan '19

Hi, I'm currently using some Trinity apps (kpdf, amarok, ksnapshot, konqueror) into another window manager (wmii, then i3). Since I stopped using Trinity as my main desktop years ago (I changed machine and reinstalled Debian without Trinity) I'm only using the aforementioned packages. Lost ability to sftp via konqueror
by Marvin Jones via trinity-users 10 Jan '19

10 Jan '19

Happy New Year to all. I just noticed I can no longer sftp in konqueror to sites I normally "visit". It's been a week or 2 since I last used the feature, but I think a Trinity update may have caused this snafu. I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 with Trinity 14.0.6 using the Preliminary Stable Builds repository. konqueror "claims" it's connecting, but it just hangs after that. I see _nothing_ concerning the attempt in either the local or remote logs. Every failure in konqueror works Just Fine when replicated on the command line. E.G., sftp://UserID:PASSword@example.com fails in konqueror sftp UserID:PASSword@example.com connects just fine on the command line ... as well, it fails on sites where I use SSH Key-Based Authentication. debug symbols for kmail
by Stefan Krusche 08 Jan '19

08 Jan '19

Good day everyone, I'm trying to create a crash report for a kmail bug. There seems to be no debian package with debug symbols for kmail, like "kmail-trinity-dbgsym", for example, analogue to many other TDE packages. Is it not needed? I would like to know if there's an online resource about how to debug TDE, especially with information on which debug symbols need to be installed. Any hints much appreciated. Thanks, and Kind regards, Stefan

I just found the src of all my troubles keeping kmail confgured
by Gene Heskett 04 Jan '19

04 Jan '19

Greetings everybody; Something just now got my attention as I was moving the mouse, and it explains perfectly all the trouble I've ever had keeping it configured. It would suddenly start keeping sent mail in some random folder intended for incoming, or it would change the mail transport, or the default dictionary, this despite the 4 sticky boxes all being checked. A. There are no wheel clickers in modern mice. B. because of this, its extremely difficult to move the mouse about the screen without also causing the wheel to move however minutely. C. Stopping the pointer above one of the header lines and scrolling the wheel, scrolls it thru all the selections available for that particular line (sent-mail, dictionary, mail transport etc) and when the mouse has moved on, without a click, the option remains selected. IMO this is a bug, a big PITA bug. IMO to change that stuff, one should first have to uncheck the sticky box, make your selection and lock it again with a sticky box checkmark. Can this be looked at? Please? Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. Desktop Icons keep rearranging
by borglabs4 01 Jan '19

01 Jan '19

Hi people I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this. User PCLOS, it happens on both 32 and 64 bit versions. After arranging the desktop icons (all kinds), they rearrange themselves each time I load the TDE. They just scatter everywhere. I have tried, arranging to grid, locking in place. No setting seems to work. When I lock the icons in place, they still rearrange and then lock. Any ideas? Kate

Kpersonalizer problem
by Thierry de Coulon 27 Dec '18

27 Dec '18

Hi all, I've got a little but nagging problem with Kpersonalizer. I've setup a Raspberry Pi with Raspbian (the latest Raspbian Stretch works very well on a 3 B+, by the way) and installed TDE from Slavek's repositories. Then I decided to rename the "Pi" user. Since that, every time I log in I get Kpersonalizer. If I don't run it, I get no icons on the desktop. If I do, some of my previous settings are kept, some are lost (colours, windows decorations). This certainly is a permission problem and dome file not being written, but where? Root works very well. I could (and possibly will) create a new user, but first I would like to understand what is not going right. Thierry

Can't run tdesu any more (openSuSE)
by Thierry de Coulon 23 Dec '18

23 Dec '18

Hello all, I just followed my systems proposal (on openSUSE) to update lots of things and there has been a change that I don't really master. Before the update, I could start programs that need root rights (such as Yast) with: tdesu <program>, and enter the password. After the upgrade, it no more works (the password window stays there and does not accept the password). Calling it from the command line brings: Daemon not safe (no sgid), not using it A search suggested (for KDE's kdesu) chmod G+S but this brings: The TDE binaries are not designed to be run with suid priviledges So: a) is this something new with newer kernels - so the problem will come to Debian soon? b) is there a solution

Trinity on OpenBSD?
by Hawke R 22 Dec '18

22 Dec '18

Greetings, I have been very happy to be using Trinity for the past year. Though not a Debian fan, at least Trinity has given me back the much more productive KDE3 experience (compared to other DE's), and has run very well. So much better than the other DEs. I see that there was an announcement of a partial port to FreeBSD in 2016. Has anyone made any effort, or better yet had any success, with getting Trinity running on OpenBSD? Is it even remotely possible for an end-user to make the existing source work on OBSD? Or is it only possible if developers put in the effort? I have setup a VM with OBSD to try, but before wading in would appreciate knowing if it is even remotely possible and any pointers for resources to get started doing so on OBSD. Thanks kindly! -Hawke

1080p Theme recommendation?
by Michael 21 Dec '18

21 Dec '18

Built a new system with a 22” 1080p monitor. The shipped TDE themes are basically non-readable at that resolution [1]. Text appears about like a 4 pt font size on the Window title, Tool/Task bar, Menu, ... Wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a theme they like that they use on a 1080p setup. (Link to where to download it hugely helpful.) Thanks, Michael [1] The YellowOnBlue-big has readable titles, but menus are so big they go off screen.

It's likely your problem with pclos was it was 32bit. pclos doesn't support 32bit anymore, not for a long time. I think since 2015 or 16. I have me test machines, data recovery machines, laptops and server all running Ali's Big Daddy rolls. It works great. The only thing I don't like and it happens TDE under any distro. It's the constant reloading of the gui when I install software. I don't understand why it does that. Bug? Kate

Probably nothing to do with this problem, but anyway: If I have a HDD connected via a USB adaptor, I've found that after an initial plugging and use, then safely removing it, going back to it, in the same session, it may or may not be recognised. Doing a hard reboot seems to clear what ever causes this. Simply logging out and logging back in doesn't seem to work. -- Best Regards: Baron

Several mates went out of business supporting Vista, Now, a few more are close to closing because of win10. All I get at the shop are people bring in there machines to have data recovered after win8/10 died during an update (not so much win7). I don't know how MS stays in business. The os on this laptop, that I'm writing this email on, will be retired soon for Alistair Izzard's big daddy roll of PCLOS 64bit. Thank you very much Ali and to all. The OS is Ark Linux 2008. It's more than 10 years old and it has served me well, great infact. It took 7 years to find a replacement. Any linux, even a bad one, is always better than the best windows edition (or OSX but not to the same shocking degree). Kate >

Sometimes it just helps to plug out the unit out and do the following. If you can, power it down, then connect it, power it back up. If it works, it's like the unit. If it doesn't, then it's software. Another thing you can try is to wait for a few mins, until the drive spins up, plug it out, wait 10s plug in again. It could be the drive is really slow to spin up. Good luck, let us know what happens. Kate

weirdness involving the panel, gtk stuff, and everything
by dep 09 Dec '18

09 Dec '18

much peculiarity, beginning about an hour ago. first, protonmail bridge collapsed, and i route kmail through it, which required a reboot. it came back, but the little network icon now didn't come back -- i forget the tde network app, so i can't test it from the commandline -- so i can't switch to the VPN, which is a pain. then came the video setting. each reboot, i need to run nvidia settings so as to set my monitor array correctly. this has worked without fail for years. but now: dep@dep-desktop:~$ /usr/bin/nvidia-settings (nvidia-settings:2540): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: specified instance size for type 'CtkWindow' is smaller than the parent type's 'GtkWindow' instance size (nvidia-settings:2540): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_new: assertion 'G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT (object_type)' failed (nvidia-settings:2540): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_container_set_border_width: assertion 'GTK_IS_CONTAINER (container)' failed Segmentation fault (core dumped) to the best of my knowledge, i have changed nothing on the system. oh, and the kicker panel, which i have set to autohide, won't autohide. all this in the last hour. what to do? thanks in advance. -- dep Sent with ProtonMail Secure Email. ugly VLC after Stretch
by Felmon Davis 08 Dec '18

08 Dec '18

Greets! I decided to upgrade from Jessie to Stretch last night. it seems to have worked though there are some oddities. now VLC has grotesquely large control buttons ("Pause", etc.); the interface in general seems to run on a different 'theme' and anyway is over-large. I have tried the "forced window style" option under "preferences" but none of the various options but they make no different in these respects. maybe 'CDE' comes closest. I have purged and re-installed VLC also to no avail. I have looked at the 'themes' VLC offers. awful. just want my orange-colored working interface back. the only other application I've found which has undergone similar changes is Pan - it has a more 'pastel' shaded control set which I don't appreciate but can ignore. note a complication: I had Devuan installed and just did the Stretch update but not sure of its relevance (thus I mention it). f. -- Felmon Davis

kmail foibles
by Gene Heskett 08 Dec '18

08 Dec '18

Greetings all; I have been harassed by bad index files notices, but I may have found the cause. I just went thru every folder in its Mail corpus finding several dozen leftover claws files, either in the root of each folder, in the cur or tmp subdirs, nuked them all and restarted kmail, which then bitched about every folder I had cleaned up. I closed the advisory and fully expected to see kmail hogging the cpu up to 100% for an hour or more as it had done in the past, but it was done reindexing everything in just a long minute! All of the claws crap carried dates in 2013 to 2014, which would be about the time frame I did have it installed. So if your kmail is acting likes its infected with flooby dust, see what happens if you do a bit of housecleaning in your ~/Mail subdir. I think it was getting confused over encountering strange file names. Time will tell the truth of this tail of course. -- Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. replacement for tdelibs needs a reboot, but didn't ask for one
by Gene Heskett 08 Dec '18

08 Dec '18

I wondered about it at the time, but not doing it crashed 2 machines who were linked via an ssh login were locked up tight last night, this one and one of my machine controllers. I had to get dressed to walk up the hill in 20F weather and press the reset buttons on both it and this one. Its been yonks since a crash, took me by surprise. And I'd tried to run latency-test from linuxcnc on this machine last night after the reboot, and found a passle of rtapi_app and rtapi running this morning that weren't killable by a root session of htop. Some sort of a ghost or??, as stopping htop, and restarting it made them go away. Strange goings on but it seems to be running normally now. -- Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. I do have several computers in me wee lab. The sticks are all fine, mount and umount on all other computers, including another pclos 64 with the same kernels. At first I thought it was a kernel bug, wrong. I can only guess I'm installing something that messes it up. I reinstalled the OS into the test computer and incrementally installing packages until I find the culprit. I've noticed some odd behavior with some trinity packages such as trinity-tdeio-umountwrapper, it removes the "safely remove" from all menus related to removable drives. I think I'm installing an incompatible packages. I've done it before. Honestly I'm my own worst enemy. Thanks for the UDisks2 tip. I'll check into that. Kate

After that file a bug with PCLOS so they can file an upstream bug. Best, Michael

Unable to mount this device error when using usb stick but not always
by Kate Draven 05 Dec '18

05 Dec '18

Out of the blue I started getting this error msg. Using PCLOS 64bit Unable to mount this device. Potential reasons include: Improper device and/or user privilege level Corrupt data on storage device Technical details: org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Error.Failed: Error mounting /dev/sdk1 at /media/Lexar: Command-line `mount -t "vfat" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=0,gid=0,shortname=mixed,utf8=1,showexec,flush,noatime,shortname=lower" "/dev/sdk1" "/media/Lexar"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: /mnt/Lexar: /dev/sdk1 already mounted or mount point busy. It's random and sometimes suddenly goes away. I've tried it with a variety of USB sticks. It happens as user and root. Anyone have any idea what this might mean. I've also noticed uuidd doesn't start, claiming "failed to open/create /run/uuidd/uuidd.pid" Thanks for any help. Kate

Downloading mail when not logged on
by J Leslie Turriff 02 Dec '18

02 Dec '18

To compartmentalize my activities I have several accounts on my machine, and usually I'm only logged onto one at a time. I'd like to somehow have the email for these various accounts download even if I'm not logged onto them. Is there anything in Trinity that can do that, or will I have to set up some sort of mail server? Leslie

Removable media and Konqueror
by J Leslie Turriff 02 Dec '18

02 Dec '18

Whenever I attach removable media to my machine I get a prompt window, and one of the options is to open it in Konqueror. When I select that, I get an entirely new Konqueror session, even though I already have Konqueror open, and the option 'Open as tab in existing Konqueror when URL is called externally' is set. How can I make the mounter open a new tab in my existing Konqueror instance? Leslie

Fwd: KDE Project Security Advisory: messagelib: HTML email caopebrowser window automatically
by J Leslie Turriff 02 Dec '18

02 Dec '18

Is this security advisory from KDE an issue for Trinity kmail? Leslie ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: KDE Project Security Advisory: messagelib: HTML email caopebrowser window automatically Date: 2018-11-28, 12:46:50 From: Albert Astals Cid <aacid(a)kde.org> To: kde-announce(a)kde.org KDE Project Security Advisory ============================= Title: messagelib: HTML email can open browser window automatically Risk Rating: Low CVE: CVE-2018-19516 Versions: KDE Applications < 18.12.0 Date: 28 November 2018 Overview ======== messagelib is the library used by KMail to display emails. messagelib by default displays emails as plain text, but gives the user an option to "Prefer HTML to plain text" in the settings and if that option is not enabled there is way to enable HTML display when an email contains HTML. Some HTML emails can trick messagelib into opening a new browser window when displaying said email as HTML. This happens even if the option to allow the HTML emails to access remote servers is disabled in KMail settings. This means that the owners of the servers referred in the email can see in their access logs your IP address. Workaround ========== Do not enable "Prefer HTML to plain text" in KMail settings. Solution ======== Update to KDE Applications >= 18.12.0 Or apply the following patch: https://cgit.kde.org/messagelib.git/commit/?id=34765909cdf8e55402a8567b48fb… Credits ======= Thanks to Jany Belluz for the report and to Laurent Montel for the fix. -------------------------------------------------------

Sound quality problem.
by Γιώργος Κωστόπουλος 28 Nov '18

28 Nov '18

Hi! :-) I just installed the last TDE stable version, on Devuan ASCII (the stable version) x64. Everything seems that went perfect, with one exception: The only sound option that works is ALSA and its quality is very low. Any hints? PS. I understand that the next Devuan version (Beowulf) will be officially supported. PS2. Maybe a better option is installing Exe-GNU/Linux.

I tried to update my debian stable TDE-based system this morning, and received this error message: E: /tmp/apt-dpkg-install-96xDOO/031-tdebase-data-trinity_4%3a14.0.6~pre21-0debian9.0.0+7_all.deb: trying to overwrite '/opt/trinity/share/icons/crystalsvg/16x16/apps/kcmdf.png', which is also in package kdf-trinity 4:14.0.6~pre5-0debian9.0.0+0 Synaptic is reporting a broken package, but the instructions as to how to proceed in this situation are exceedingly unclear. Anyway. Something is obviously wrong, and it appears to be a TDE packaging error of some kind and I thought I should post here to put the issue before people who understand this a lot better than I do. Does anyone know how to contact Tim?
by Slávek Banko 12 Nov '18

12 Nov '18

Hi all, we all know that Tim is usually very busy and it's hard to get in touch with him. For everyday work on the project, this is not a major problem. However, there are tasks for which Tim's hands are necessary. For example, uploading ISO images for Ubuntu 18.04 with TDE 14.0.5 into the official mirror system, adding Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic) to QuickBuild, creating GIT repositories for next applications, changes to web pages, etc. The problem is, there has been no way to contact Tim for the past 1.5 months. There is no reaction to mails - neither in mailing lists nor in direct contact. At Trinity IRC rooms Tim is not present. Every attempt to contact Tim over the Internet is unsuccessful. Please, is there anyone in the mailing list who can get in touch with Tim? Is there, for example, someone who has personal contact with Tim and can tell him that there are some tasks for which he is needed? Cheers -- Slávek

importing very old email into kmail
by dep 12 Nov '18

12 Nov '18

hi, everybody . . . i keep a running archive, in maildir format, of email going back to my first days using the pre-1.0 beta of KDE. it's cool to have an occasionally useful. over the weekend i was finally able to copy email even older than that from my old OS/2 drive. (in case it's of interest, here's how i was able to do it. the drive was formatted hpfs, and the data were in a logical partition of 641mb -- the old drive was only 2.1gb. using an ide-usb adapter i was able to mount the drive but even with the hpfs kernel driver loaded it would not read. so i made a dd image of the partition and was able to then mount the image and everything was tickety boo.) the email came in via the MR/2-ICE (Mail Reader /2 Internet Cruiser Edition) email client. while the messages are not in maildir format -- i'm not even sure maildir existed in 1994 -- they are in individual files as is maildir. ingoing and outgoing messages are stored in the same directory, the former having an .RCV extension and the latter with an .OUT extension. if i click on one of either type, it pops up just fine in a kmail window, all fields populated accurately. my initial thought was to make a /MR2-mail subdirectory in my KMail mail directory, copy them all into that, then sort them into my currently existing folders as appropriate. but then i hit a problem: the .OUT files show up just fine, but the .RCV files don't. (best i can tell, they differ only in the extensions -- both, when clicked on, open in a KMail message window.) before i simply do a mass rename, i thought i'd see if there's some proper, approved method for importing such messages/files into KMail. i keep thinking that the method i'm using might cause my esiating email files to blow up or something. is there? -- dep Sent with ProtonMail Secure Email. Because privacy matters.

First it seems that google isn't talking to me again. I had no Idea that you had replied to me until I went and looked on the web. Initially just files ! You may recall a little while ago I asked whether anyone knew if HP Elite 8300 machines were OK for Linux. Well they are, I've just bought one. i7 8 core 3.4 GHz cpu, 10 GB ram, 500 Gb HDD, DVD rom, GB Ethernet card. On board graphics and sound. Amazingly Q4OS simply installed and works with no issues at all. Yes I had to format the HDD to get rid of Win10, but I didn't want windows anyway. My old machine has four HDD, and nearly 2 Tb of data on them. So I thought rather than start buying cases for the HDD, I would just get the two machines to talk to each other, transfer any settings and carry on from there. But I have no real Idea how to go about it, hence the question. I'll go through the links that you have so kindly provided and see how I get on. Thanks again. -- Best Regards: Baron

Irritating kpdf console messages
by J Leslie Turriff 09 Nov '18

09 Nov '18

Whenever I happen to run kpdf from konsole it spouts an amazing amount of junk messages whenever the page view changes, i.e. scrolling, opening/closing the navigation pane, changing from full-page to page width... These seem to be developer's diagnostic messages; should they be appearing in the production version? Leslie I have attached an example of the messages, together with the small document that generated them.

How to increase the font size in Kmail HTML text
by J Leslie Turriff 09 Nov '18

How can I increase Kmail's HTML font to a readable size? (See attachment.) There's no line item in Settings -> Appearance -> Fonts -> Apply to: for Message Body - HTML. Yes, yes, I know; HTML can have multiple font sizes. What I need is some way to scale them all by some percentage, or something.

Konqueror crashes
by J Leslie Turriff 08 Nov '18

08 Nov '18

Since I've reinstalled Trinity on my OpenSuSE Leap 15 machine, Konqueror (kfmclient openProfile filemanagement) sometimes crashes when I move the cursor over the entry for a PDF file (any PDF file). If I'm quick enough, I can right-click and select Open With... kPDF.) Tonight I tried to send the crash report that results to Trinity, but it just hangs there, 'waiting to connect...' How can I get that info into your hands? Leslie

Both machines are running Q4OS with Trinity, both machines are wired to my router and can access the Internet without any problem. I can't figure out how to access one machine from the other ! Thanks guys. -- Best Regards: Baron

Naming pattern for TDE packages based upon KDE names? (Installing KDiff3?)
by Michael 08 Nov '18

08 Nov '18

So I tried: aptitude install kdiff3 and got 100+ packages related to KDE. A little too quick on the 'yes' I was... Thankfully this awk command: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2133328 lets you 'undo' everything installed by mistake. What would be the proper package to install to get the KDiff3 from TDE? Well, I can find that on my own with an apt search I guess [1], so.. Really more relevent, Is there some sort of 'global' naming pattern to translate from what would be the KDE package name to the TDE package name? Thanks All, Michael [1] # apt-cache search kdiff3 kdiff3 - compares and merges 2 or 3 files or directories kdiff3-doc - documentation for kdiff3 kdiff3-qt - compares and merges 2 or 3 files or directories - Qt version kdiff3-trinity - compares and merges 2 or 3 files or directories [Trinity] kdiff3-trinity-doc - documentation for kdiff3 [Trinity] Just add "-trinity"??? If so add that to the top of the Trinity Applications page, https://www.trinitydesktop.org/applications.php please !! :)

How do you (re)start the sys tray network manager?
by Michael 07 Nov '18

07 Nov '18

Hey All, How do you start, or restart, the system tray network manager? The (applet?) that connects to wireless networks. Also, what package is it in (in case I need to install it)? Just built a Devuan/TDE laptop and it’s either not installed by default or it doesn’t launch by default? Best, Michael PS: I’ve got 400+ list messages to read, promise I’ll answer the ones work drug me away from months ago...

Leave the progress indicator open when stopping/starting Kmail
by J Leslie Turriff 06 Nov '18

06 Nov '18

At the bottom right of the main Kmail window, a progress bar shows when mail is downloading, and if the up-arrow is clicked, and expanded progress bar for each account is shown. Is there a way to tell Kmail to always show the epanded progress bars, so that I don't have to enable that every time I open Kmail? Leslie

How does one install tqt3interface?
by zap 05 Nov '18

05 Nov '18

I am having trouble installing the trinity desktop. I keep getting weird errors when I go to make tqtinterface including, Q_MOVABLE_TYPE is not a type and, other stuff too, is there a requirement I am missing or something? The cmake part built properly but everything else is a bit... screwed up.DQT_VERSION=3 doesn't work I changed the 3 to a 4 and it built, but then when I used make -j4 or make it runs into major errors. Any idea how to fix?
