Can Trinity for Jessie be used for Stretch/ASCII?
by Jimmy Johnson 09 Jun '18

09 Jun '18

I like the desktop for Jessie, I don't feel like I'm missing anything by using it and I'm experiencing a reproducible bug that's shared by others in ASCII/Stretch and it gets worse using the Plasma Desktop and would like to test the problem with TDE for Jessie. The problem is screen blackouts both audio and video using HDMI on a smart tv, the blackouts come and go, come and go, short blackouts using TDE and long blackouts using Plasma. No desktop after upgrade
by mgb-trinity＠yosemite.net 07 Jun '18

07 Jun '18

Upgraded from Jessie + TDE Stable to Stretch + TDE PSB. Upgraded cleanly. On first attempt TDE ran some kind of XDG compliance enforcer. TDM starts and I can log in. TDE spends half a minute or so saying "starting desktop" in the usual way but then I'm left with nothing but the cursr and a blue background. The only anomaly I've found thus far in the logs is (IIRC) an ASSERT of "primary_set" from randr. Any suggestions, tips, or hints would be welcome. Difficult to answer questions as without KMail it is taking me several attempts to type perfect headers into telnet that the list software will accept. I have recent backup as a last resort but am hoping for a way forward. Thanks, --Mike

HP laptop volume keys don't work
by Dan Youngquist 05 Jun '18

Hi all, HP Probook 6475b, Debian 9 (stretch) (MX 17.1 actually), TDE 14.0.5. The volume buttons will move the onscreen indicator between 0% and 10%, but no farther, and the volume setting is unaffected. The volume buttons work fine in XFCE. Any ideas where to look for the problem? Thanks.

changes to konqueror ark plugin submenu
by Michele Calgaro 02 Jun '18

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA512 Dear all, the "compress as" submenu in Konqueror is going to have some minor rework. We are changing the default compression format from gz to xz and enabling jar format (which could be useful for java programmers). We would like to remove lzma from that menu since we think it is not widely used anymore (the format would still be available through the "Add to archive" entry). [tiny new feature proposal] by default space between "close window" and "restore/maximize"
by wofgdkncxojef＠gmail.com 01 Jun '18

01 Jun '18

Hi everyone. This is a proposal for a tiny usability improvement, in my biased opinion. A bit of space between "close window" (the X) and "restore/maximize" (the boxy thing) up right, on the window border. If you remember, kubuntu did this once. You can already do this your self, i'm just proposing to make it the default config. If the devs feel, enough people approve of it on the mailing list, they will do it. So make sure to share your opinion.

Getting the trinity-keyring in Devuan.
by Jimmy Johnson 31 May '18

31 May '18

Getting the trinity-keyring in Devuan can be tricky, I had to learn a system that worked, First of course is to do the Devuan base install and then boot and login and do apt-get update and 'apt-get install trinity-keyring --allow-unauthenticated', now you can apt-get install tde-trinity, you will have to tell apt 'y' for yes when asked to install untrusted. After the install is done and you boot to the trinity desktop you can copy the trinity-keyring and run 'apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.quickbuild.io --recv-keys (paste the trinity-keyring here)' and your good to go. If you try to have a system without the keyring properly installed you are going to have system problems, so make sure you can install aptitude and can run aptitude dist-upgrade without problems. Help with HDMI audio please!
by Jimmy Johnson 31 May '18

31 May '18

Hey Guys, first my thanks to Timothy who had the foresight to start this project and stay with it. Timothy Pearson you rock! I test Debian and Ubuntu KDE for more than 20yrs, but no more I'm leaving Plasma and Systemd, they take the Happy out of Camping and computing too. I'm trying to setup Trinity with No-Systemd and get a good HDMI connection for both audio and video, it seems with systemd this is no problem and without systemd it's a hit and miss thing, if I keep at it I can get it working but I don't know what I'm doing and get frustrated. I have 3 multimedia computers one has nvidia and I'm watching video and I have audio, I can turn audio down using the video player vol control but the tde-mixer or pulseaudio vol control are not working. The other two are Intel audio and video and I feel lucky to get audio at all, sometimes it's just video and when I go to the konsole and type $ 'pulseaudio --start' I can get audio. Any help to get all this to working auto-magic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -- Jimmy Johnson Devuan Beowulf - TDE-Trinity R14.0.5 - AMD A8-7600 - EXT4 at sda8 Registered Linux User #380263

Hi I am running Ubuntu 16.04 and the corresponding trinity version. But know I have a sort of bizarre problem. I activate the screensaver, I select the matrix. I successfully run the test, but when the screensaver should start, just a simple empty blank screensaver starts, but not the matrix. Is there anybody with a a similar problem and know how to solve it? Thanks Uwe Brauer

by Gene Heskett 31 May '18

31 May '18

Hi Slavik; Running latest r14, and I am noting that its losing its last read msg place in a mailing list easier and easier, sending it back to the first time stamp in a given folder. My inbox is approaching 20 years old, as is my coco list. Also, when MMB pasting a url with word wrapping enabled in the composer, it breaks the url even if there are no spaces and is of the style <a.full.url>. Should it not treat stuff surrounded by <> as unbreakable even if it's 500+ chars long, like some of the ebay stuff is these days? If these 2 annoyances could be addressed at some point, I would be quite a bit happier, and would say thank you in all caps. And send another donation the next time Tim needs to pay the bills. There is one economic law I'm a firm believer in, TANSTAAFL, so despite being retired on an SS pension, I manage to try and support the stuff I use. Not lavishly of course, given the income here. Broadcom wireless in Devuan
by Robert Peters 29 May '18

(was Re: [trinity-users] migrating from Debian to Devuan + VLC) Finally, have a Broadcom wireless connection in Devuan Searching led me to "devuan forums wireless", and to "Installing Broadcom Wireless Drivers". The page https://askubuntu.com/questions/55868/installing-broadcom-wireless-drivers points out how to find the driver package needed, in my case bcmwl-kernel-source. Downloaded the file from pkgs.org and installed with gdebi-gtk. After that, iwconfig showed wlan0, and I was able to connect. Hope this helps anyone having trouble connecting in Devuan. -Robert

[trinity-users] /etc/alternatives/default-xsession.desktop is not tde.desktop
by Felix Miata 28 May '18

28 May '18

openSUSE 15.0 Prior version 42.3 had no such file /etc/alternatives/default-xsession.desktop. What's the prescribed procedure to make tde the default desktop? I tried 'yast2 alternatives', but tde.desktop is not an offered option, even though it is present in /usr/share/xsessions/. yast2 alternatives offers only icewm-default and icewm-lite. Is this something that needs a bug filed? I don't see anything on point. If yes, in openSUSE tracker, or in TDE tracker? Is there some existing trinity rpm that needs to be installed to create it? -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom." For hard > drive management I use Wheezy and Jessie, for multimedia I use the > latest. For the most part my system runs pretty well, except for hanging when I try to reboot (as explained below). What I would really like is to get VLC working right again. It was always the best all-round multimedia player, and now it crashes every time I open it. I searched round for solutions, and all I've found so far are suggestions to go back to the Wheezy repositories for older versions of VLC. Yet another user here in the Trinity group had the same problems with VLC, and he was already using Wheezy. I don't know what the problem is, but there is another great piece of software ruined. > Currently I'm looking at keeping some older systems around by > rolling my own kernels. There's always options. And slicing off > another partition for a new install is another option. I run Debian Jessie, and systemd seems to cause the system to hang in particular when I reboot. I always see that systemd is doing something, and cannot shut down. I created a kind of script to kill running programs, and this has pretty much solved the problem, but I still feel that my current Debian system does not run quite as smoothly as my older systems used to run. All in good time, though. I rarely have incidents any more which cause me to scream, pull out my hair, and call down curses upon the heads of the devs. > As for Ubuntu, they have messed up big-time and now they are on my list > of things I don't want to do anymore and now Microsoft won't be lonely > any more. :) It's never lonely at the bottom. > > The icon is nice, but I would recommend that all Devuan branding > > distinguish > > itself from Debian by making the spiral go round widdershins: that is, > > counter-clockwise. Then it would be perfect. > I hear you, it was just something I slapped together. No problem, it was just a suggestion. If Debian do not complain, then there is no obligation to change it. But since Devuan is a fork of Debian, and thus technically "different" from it, I thought it might be wise to think ahead. One could also say, for example, that TDE *is* really just KDE, but I believe some people out there will object. Likewise, you could say that Icecat *is* really just Iceweasel, which is really just Firefox. You could even say that *rock-n-roll* is really just *the blues* + *country music*. I do recognize that all categories are, to some degree, arbitrary and influenced by personal biases, etc. They can also be useful, however, to indicate that (for example) Devuan has struck out in a slightly different direction, which in my opinion is truer to Debian's mission than Debian itself currently operates. > You do know that Devuan IS Debian don't you? I'm running Devuan from Debian's Sid to Jessie, in other words > Devuan Jessie, ASCII, Beowulf and Ceres and Trinity is a clean install > on them all with no real problem, All around Devuan Jessie is the best! Yes, but the only practical way for me to get Devuan is to install Debian first, then migrate to Devuan. I have tried to install from the Devuan live DVD, and it wants to overwrite my home folder, with no other option. I have a backup, of course, but this does not seem quite right. I have found instructions for migrating from Debian to Devuan, without the necessity of reinstalling my system, so that is my plan. However, I have yet a couple loose ends to tie up, so that I can revert to my working system if necessary, when I will inevitably mess up something due to experimentation. Also, I have other responsibilities, various little jobs, and other things that I must do, as there is a life outside computers, and a whole world waiting to be explored just outside my door; or so I hear. > Bill just take away one thing from this post: If it's not fun don't do it. IBus input with TDE applications

Dear TDE users, is there a way to use IBus as the input method for TDE applications? I have installed and configured IBus on my system. It works fine with GTK and QT4 applications but I can't get it to work with TDE applications (which, I believe are QT3 applications). So for example, I can input japanese hiragana or korean hangul in Firefox or Libre Office, but I can't do the same in KMail. All help appreciated. [ Re-send ] Explaining the process of adding bugs to next TDE release
by Michele Calgaro 22 May '18

22 May '18

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA512 Dear all, re-sending without autocrypt option. There has been some reports of problems with SPAM filters discarding the previous email. If you already received the first message yesterday, please ignore this one and accept our apologies for the double sending. If you didn't get the original email, please read below. Cheers Michele, Slavek - -------------------- Dear all, we would like to explain the process of how bug reports get added to the next release bug list. As many of you probably know, there are some bug reports (that we call meta bugs) that serve as an index for bugs to fix or already fixed for the next maintenance and minor release. For example bug 2247 for R14.1.0, bug 2696 for R14.0.5 and bug 2885 for R14.0.6. These meta bugs are intended to list bugs that have been selected by the developers for the mentioned coming release, so we would like to invite all of you to refrain from directly adding bugs to those lists on your own. Instead you should first discuss with one of the developers (say Tim, Slavek or Michele) and if agreed, you can then add the bug to the discussed list. The reason for this logic (and limitation) is that if anyone just add bugs indiscriminately based on their own needs, those lists would grow out of control and out of what is physically possible to achieve with the development workforce that TDE has at the moment. We encourage all of you to participate in making TDE better, but please take note of the above procedure and try sticking to it as much as possible. On a side note, R14.0.5 bug list has been frozen and no other bugs will go into it unless critical of blockers. Of course, if a working patch is provided before the release of R14.0.5, we will consider that for inclusion. Feel free to provide your feedback on the process explain above Cheers Michele, Slavek -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAEBCgAdFiEEjhl1z5vbYB3YbFTiKnW3yore1c8FAlsD2uwACgkQKnW3yore 1c9tjw/9GTvzkZULvstj5VBBWjdJgfbkFQ+hDq8c7cRleKDqDwwK89uSdWshe6G7 VU5fwH82CScdF4itYr8GxZvwmZPcLtPvy83WLsEPL4pvC8oNoUZtHkqNniL8CP14 wfiUZcFuQvMa251i2KP0a1QBREd8xJhbj09obfz8YFa9sRQq0cauMgMDqxVOR+6U 0MU8CgTNplh49XWAjX9e5upwsgvqEb58e53h0XsYOn9aM+tvUOnCaKA83eIlICUe R6qt5807sKPbd2fXlpSNmtprPllwo/OKse/KUrCq0a3hifG64xapwub/S+ylGFpf Q2RfHxvKVUnSOyElNe7wYYjVhBv5qCcGO4mE7uR8TwsN3ta2vL226aw5rNv8Oarb nNKrjBO5Ey3F4wxhFI5ZNOmQqU6eqSvqwiT2lN2nVZ0CCuXGDScXcHo8gLM3j6la 9hSE/R8KouLtef2NyrFB1ObWtn2p4geAbQKVTyr9sQyS2K07Fyub2qeamdJeOyEV 1HtCzK+ot3QwD+jrTfQEigJGUitW4DPfy6iVLHBJz+B5kkOspYJq8Ks9EQh/Zya0 BNRKpqettm6RlOchuNHa7NWuPOyQUyyPnBI371+EsBAohZdgm0Nuis9RYVnoXII0 YO9F31g8dfY9rCTJ9CkFV4GpA6879uswTcxEf/AEod/m4ZdhnR8= =lSLn -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

the final part of my upgrade saga was installation of new nvidia drivers, which has in the past taken at least two days and required anguish, blood sacrifices to unknown demons, and angry outburts at anyone who encounters me. but i just now installed the nvisia drivers for ubuntu-16.04 and they . . . just worked! (the act of writing my particular configuration, primaty monitor below secondary monitor, won't write to the x.org configuration file, so i have to redo it on every reboot, but that's as it has always been.) now if i could cook up the mouse cursor i've wanted ever since i switched from OS/2 to linux. there was an OS/2 utility that allowed one to write one's own mouse (and other) cursors, and i got it and used it and loved it because it was possible to make a pointer arrow that was the reverse of whatever it was over -- black on white, white on black, blue on red, etc., to the point of even being half one color and half the other when it rested on an edge. this made it manifestly visible, always. linux has nothing to match it and i intend to undertake a course of study that will result in its being replicated for linux. i'll send postcards. -- dep Sent with ProtonMail Secure Email. Feel free to provide your feedback on the process explain above Cheers Michele, Slavek

still haven't fixed artsd -- what package is it in, that i might try to reinstall or something? -- but i am writing this on trinity's kmail, through the protonmail bridge, which encrypts it and sends it down the pipe to their server, which sends it out in whatever form the list receives it. which i suspect is a first. a minor first to be sure, but a first. -- dep Sent with ProtonMail Secure Email. user-dependent compose combinations
by D. R. Evans 18 May '18

18 May '18

Does anyone have instructions as to how to add compose key combinations for an individual user? I have seen quite several mutually-exclusive methods that are purported to work, but I haven't had any success here. Here is the current situation (which does not work): $ locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8 Following the man page for Compose, I have the following ~/.XCompose file, which should (according to the man page) import the system-wide Compose file for my locale, and add one extra entry (for testing purposes): ---- include "%L" # import the default Compose file for your locale <Multi_key> <asterisk> <asterisk> : "⁂" asterism # ASTERISM ---- But when I try to enter a compose sequence, it seems that only the ones in the system-wide file are used. For example, the system file /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose has the following lines: ---- <Multi_key> <asterisk> <0> : "°" degree # DEGREE SIGN <Multi_key> <0> <asterisk> : "°" degree # DEGREE SIGN ---- if, in this e-mail, I type the sequence: compose * 0 then, as expected, I see: ° but if I similarly type the sequence: compose * * I see: [i.e., nothing] I've probably done something stupid, like made a typing error somewhere, but I've stared at the files, and re-read the man page multiple times, and I just don't see why what I've done doesn't work. I have rebooted, just to make sure that the files are read correctly; to no avail. (Probably just a restart of the X server is needed [if that], but rebooting seemed more certain.) Doc PS I am on debian stable, fully up to date. -- Web: http://enginehousebooks.com/drevans

trying now to solve a kmail puzzle
by dep 17 May '18

17 May '18

hi, everybody . . . after a little research, and spurred by that pile of stuff that wanted to be autoremoved, i went ahead last night and changed my sources.list to reflect Ubuntu-16.04-LTS and Preliminary Stable and did apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade. (ubuntu has traditionally supported LTS-to-LTS upgrades, which makes sense.) and so far, fingers crossed, everything is working. now comes the part that largely sparked all this upgrade frenzy (though the gemini project has figured in, too, this is now about my desktop machine): getting kmail to work with protonmail. i seem to have all the pieces installed. but there are some configuration issues that i cannot sort -- i simply don't know that much about the mechanics of email. i have the beta of the protonmail bridge, which is alleged to allow use of a local mail client in linux rather than being tied to protonmail's admittedly very nice webmail. the only configuration example they give, though, is thunderbird. might someone who knows mail well look through here and give me a sense of the analogs in kmail? most of it i can sort out, but such as the "IMAP exception" confounds me, as does where i'm supposed to tell kmail about 127.0.0.1:1143 and 127.0.0.1:1025. i know the numbers after the colons are the port, but no idea about the 127.0.0.1. there are a couple of other things that also puzzle me. the instructions, for thunderbird, are here: https://protonmail.com/bridge/thunderbird#1 that failing, does anyone know of a good way to export vast kmail message archives to thunderbird? dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. HDMI switch, screen size and quality
by deloptes 16 May '18

16 May '18

Hi, I used till now DVI to connect the PC to the monitor. I recently bought a digitus 4K HDMI switch 4x1 to be able to switch between 3 HDMI inputs. However when I switched on the PC and X started, all was messed. Default resolution was 1280x720 instead 1920x1080. The display area is partially out of the monitor size, so that the panel is not visible and lastly the quality of the image was really bad (like insufficient frequency or sync or whatever) I switched back to the DVI cable and I am wondering if someone can point me to the right direction. regards

still plugging along with gemini
by dep 15 May '18

15 May '18

hi, everybody! i'm still in the always-exciting configuration stage of linux on the little gemini. and i have not found a satisfactory mail client. there used to be a world of them and there really aren't anymore. i've installed, configured, and in minutes grown to hate thunderbird. likewise the latest kmail. that leaves nothing. i thought that the current kmail might be good because it turns out that kwin is nothing but plasma desktop (in fact, i can at login choose plasma. ick) so it seemed as if many of the underpinnings would already be there; still, it was a 6-gb download and displays all the things that made me not like post-3x kde. so a couple of questions: how much stuff would i have to install to get kmail-trinity to work here? and would it get along okay with the kwin/plasma/qt5 stuff already installed? dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. off-topic desktop on off-topic wm, but maybe someone here knows
by dep 15 May '18

15 May '18

greetings, everybody . . . as planet computers gemini configuration enters its second week, with pretty much all linux-side software beta or worse, i actually have a sort-of working machine. (configuration won't be *utterly* complete until i have magnifying lenses implanted in my eyeballs -- 2160x1080 on a six-inch screen means that everything defaults to absurdly tiny; i opened a console with mc running in it and could have covered the window with a postage stamp, and i'm not exaggerating. though i've configured out of most of that.) but i've hit a problem that i can't figure out at all: the window manager is kwin and the desktop is lxqt. apparently both have been hacked a bit, though i may risk trying a trinity install (will it run atop kwin?) because i simply know and like it much more. but for now i need to play the cards as dealt. the device is touch screen, which for many if not most purposes is worthless. it is especially useless in dealing with the "panel," or what we would call the kicker. by default it is ridiculously tiny, but i was able to talk it into being 60 pixels high with 48x48 icons (the default is, i think 28 pixels high and i know the icons were 22x22). so now it takes a stripe across the bottom of the screen, making it even more oblong on a screen that has no space to spare. i've enabled autohide, but this is its own problem -- swiping down or touching the bottom edge to make it reappear is a very chancy thing. it can be done, but it's a minute or more of trial and error. so i want to bind a key combination to raise (and potentially lower, though if it times out and goes back down on its own, fine with me) the thing, and i haven't the first clue where or how to do this. there are in both lxqt and kwin configuration tools things called "shortcuts" which appear to be key bindings, but i do not have the slightest idea even what such an action would be called. i haven't found anything like "raise panel" as a choice. i suspect the answer will be to add or edit a line in an .xml line someplace in ./configure. any ideas? tde has kicker, so i suspect the two are fairly similar (maybe even the same code), but at this point i don't even know whether the wm or the desktop is where this ought to be done. thanks. dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. When the bug starts, it keeps freezing for several seconds when opening new folders. Then some how it goes away. Restarting konqueror doesn't help. Actually, i think if i try to select the url, it does the same thing. I didn't figure out what triggers it, it happens rarely, but when it does it's very annoying, it takes many seconds to unfreeze. Anyone knows what triggers it and how to make it stop when it starts freezing up.

Installing Debian, offset error
by Robert Peters 10 May '18

10 May '18

Hello, Has anyone installed Debian 9 from USB? I try to install to a ~480GB SDD that is in a carrier connected to a USB port. When trying to write partition changes to disk, the installer stops and complains that the root partition is offset by some multiple of 512 bytes. I try without success to find a way to set the SSD's physical and logical volume both sizes to 4096 bytes. Maybe the carrier's connection circuitry affects the perceived volume size? Maybe the SDD has to be internal and directly connected to the laptop? Thanks for any help. Robert

sorry to be jumping from project to project, but i am back working on the geminipda device now. got debian stretch onto it this morning. (the reason i was asking about the ubuntu upgrade last night was that the flashing tools i was using weren't working; oddly, this morning using exactly the same commands -- i scrolled up to them in an xterm -- functioned perfectly, and now i have a tiny computer running debian, with lxqt running atop kwin. clearly none of it has been optimized for touch screen, which makes for some excitement (for those who find screaming and throwing things exciting). i have no knowledge of lxqt and unless tde uses a lot more resources than lxqt, seems to me tde would be better. so, some questions: will tdm run acceptably atop kwin, or does it need tdm? also, the hacks the guys have done have established some key bindings that are kind of important, so i'm hoping to disable kde's key bindings at first. if memory serves, tde responds correctly to DPI settings, which if true is good, because the screen is 2160x1080, which makes for very small -- everything. but the default is something like 450 dpi. half that would be about right. i would install the kde classic icon set in the largest size (i wish that mosfet's theme were still around, but oh, well). anybody see why this wouldn't work? i know tde is not optimized for a touch screen, but i don't think any linux desktop is.

Anyone noticed this with Trinity and plymouthd?
by Leslie Turriff 08 May '18

08 May '18

From the OpenSuSE KDE3 folks. Leslie ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: [opensuse-kde3] plymouthd - takes continual 6% CPU with kdm Date: 2018-05-07, 03:32:08 From: "David C. Rankin" <drankinatty(a)suddenlinkmail.com> To: "suse-kde3" <opensuse-kde3(a)opensuse.org> All, There is an issue, that this is more to document than anything else. I've done 2 Leap 42.3 installs. On this last one, after a minimal X install via the Net-Install CD, I kept an eye on plymouth. In my 1st install, I checked with top in konsole, more-or-less on a whim, and found plymouthd churning away at 6%. On this second Leap 42.3 install (again 1st to minimum X via yast net-install, because you cannot configure outside repos during install, only community OSS, OSS-Debug, etc...) -- anyway, I decided to keep a closer watch on plymouth and find out when it started behaving badly. On the initial setup and with the xdm "Default" display manager (that clunky old thing with the system console window running in bottom-left corner), plymouthd behaved, no problems. I spent the better part of a day, moving documents over, .kde, etc.. and installing kde3 and the rest of the normal things I install. All the while, plymouthd was fine. However, after setting kdm3 in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and kde as the default WM, after rebooting and launching kde via kdm, plymouthd was again churning away at 6% continually. So there is a definite issue with plymouth and kdm. I don't know exactly why. This 2nd install was to an older laptop, so I didn't have 6% to spare and just rpm -e all plymouth.... Problem gone. If anyone else still has plymouth installed and can check with top to confirm plymouth is hogging CPU, that would be worth investigating. I can confirm this on 2 boxes. -- David C. Hello everybody! Strange problem here with Konqueror. In the right pane, I used to be able to skip to the wanted file by typing a letter. A few weeks ago, it stopped working. It only worked in the left pane, where the folders are. Then, a few days ago it was fixed by an update. But yesterday's update took it away again. Am I doing something wrong? does tde make any 3D calls?
by dep 06 May '18

the gemini device (keyboard, 4G, supporting android/linux dual boot, mediatek x27 SoC) is shipping. there's a debian rom for it, but it is very early days and the unaccelerated video is a real problem. it is still my hope to give tde a spin on it, and apparently if 3D isn't used it's quick enough to be nearly usable. am wondering the extent to which tdm and tde needs 3D support. if it's none at all or very little, i might try to install it from the debiam arm repos when mine arrives monday (after rooting it and installing the stretch rom). anybody here know?

just full of problems this week

for some reason, after having worked as i wanted it to work for a very long time, clicking on a link in email no longer brings up opera or firefox but instead konqueror. konqueror is not my very favorite (as a browser). I cannot figure out why it is suddenly doing this. i've moved it to bottom in all the html file associations, but there it is. is there some place else i should make a change? firefox reports, as it should, that it is my default browser. tia. dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. quoth Felix Miata: |xorg is a meta-package. You should be able to remove it without affecting TDE or |Xorg operation. So I can safely go ahead and let all the stuff get deleted and it won't affect the operation of TDE? (The list I posted earlier?) What puzzles me is why none of this stuff appears in autoremove or remove lists otherwise. dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. Because privacy matters.

getting trinity onto stretch
by dep 01 May '18

01 May '18

my little project thinkpad x200 now sports debian stretch and X; what it doesn't have is TDE. my line in /etc/apt/sources.list is: deb http://mirror.xcer.cz/trinity-sb /debian stretch deps-r14 main-r14 (and of course the deb-src line as well.) i've imported the gpg key apparently uneventfully. running apt-get update seems to do as it should, though it throws an "ign" for each of the trinity indices (i didn't follow it closely the first time i ran it, so this isn't necessarily unexpected). but sudo apt-get install tde-trinity renders an unable to find package error. aptitude likewise says it can't find tde-trinity. i'm clearly erring somewhere, but do not know where. how do i get the preliminary stable build onto the machine? thanks in advance. dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. tde-debian live/install cds?
by dep 30 Apr '18

30 Apr '18

to test some of the things offered here the last couple of days i just now tried on my testbed thinkpad laptop to upgrade from ubuntu-14.04 to 16.04 by changinf all the references in sources.list from "trusty" to "xenial." then did an apt-get dist-upgrade. the result isn't pretty. in fact, it won't even boot, though it makes an heroic effort. i figured that inasmuch as i'm going to have to do something fairly drastic now anyway, i'd switch to a current debian with tde -- having extra desktops around is just annoying. but looking on the liveCDs page i see ubuntu and PCLOS and some others, but no debian. does anyone here know of current debian-tde live CDs anyplace? thanks! dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. TDE setting up the environment
by Oleg Levenets 30 Apr '18

Hi, I have two questions. First: how can I enable scrolling text in tde console using the mouse wheel? I did not find the necessary parameters in the configuration. The second question: I would like to change the display of the date and time in the system tray. By default, the left is the time, on the right is the date, how can I change their places best regards, Oleg Levenets.

(How) Can I use a markdown parser in Konqueror?
by Leslie Turriff 30 Apr '18

30 Apr '18

It seems that markdown has become the new darling of the technical writers. Is there a markup parser that's compatible with Konqueror? Would it have to be written in JavaScript, or can other languages be made to work? I see that the original markdown parser was written in perl. If there is such an animal that will work with Konqueror, how does one install it? Leslie

So I don't recall the other version offered. okay, let's take it from the top. i ran kde from the last beta before kde 1.0, almost 20 years ago. beginning with 4.0, the kde project went in my estimation all flaky, so i stuck with 3.5.x until i was happy to learn of tde, which i have used since then in its verious versions. i am currently running tde 14.0.5 atop ubuntu 14.04. [much deletia] i'm glad you have kmail working as you like. i do, too. |What does this protonmail do that makes it so much more desirable? it's not either/or. protonmail is a secure mail service, not a mail client. you can learn about it if you like at protonmail.com. thing is, access to protonmail in linux is currently via a secure web interface (or an unofficial desktop app that is really a secure browser dedicated to protonmail). for windows and mac there is a thing called protonmail bridge. it encrypts the mail on the local machine before sending it, and decrypts it upon receipt, allowing more traditional mail clients to send and receive mail through protonmail. there is currently a beta, available only from protonmail, of the bridge for linux. that is what i am trying to install, so i can continue to use kmail, as i have for nearly two decades. part of the reason for this is a change of the terms of use by my isp a week ago, wherein they announced that they would be combing through my email, pictures, and everything else in search of things useful to them. as a reporter and photographer for a living, i found this unacceptable. hence protonmail and hence my desire to make it work with kmail. dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. said Dr. Nikolaus Klepp: |The point of protinmail - as I see it - was an email address, that could not be associated | with a real person. But protonmail changed the initial user authentication to require a | handy or some other identifyable device, so the main purpose is gone. not necessarily. while two-factor authentication is offered, it is not required. |But what I miss in kamil+PGPG is an encrypted mail-subject, e.g "Subject: [trinity-users] | Re: more re. tde and qt5" beeing replaced by a random string, which gets replaced on the | receiver side with an embedded subject from within the encrypted mail. Reason is, that a | lot of users use a subject that tells a lot about the mail content, at least enough to let it be | sorted in "interesting" or "junk". that's the point, and why setting it up to work with kmail requires an intervening application, the protonmail bridge. normally one would use the protonmail web interface -- essentially webmail -- which is entirely encrypted, or a special application that seems to be little more than a one-site secure browser connected to the protonmail site. (for linux: https://github.com/protonmail-desktop/application) but to use it with kmail or another mail client one needs to employ the bridge application, which encrypts before sending and decrypts upon receipt, on which a regular mail client can be hitched. (details here:https://protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/third-party-email-client…) in each case, as i understand it absolutely everything is encrypted: subject, sender, recipient, the works. the advantage to two-factor encryption in the service is of course added security should someone learn or guess your password but also the service's claim that with two-factor authentication not even the owners of protonmail can read your mail. i should mention that they offer a free version, which gives you a protonmail.com email address and limits your storage to 500 mb and each user to 150 email messages per day. though some features -- using your own domain, use of protonmail bridge -- are restricted to paid accounts, the cheapest of which is € 48.00 per year. and i think i've carried the forum terribly off-topic. i am not, btw, a protonmail salesman! dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. asked Gene Heskett: |Silly Q: do they do mailing lists? i don't think so, but i don't know with certainty. |And how much per annum do they want for a paid service? i'm paying $48/year, but that's because i wanted to bring a domain (drippingwithirony.com) along. they have more expensive services, typically i'd guess for businesses. it's worth knowing that end-to-end encryption requires the person on the other end to be a protonmail user as well. for anyone else, they encrypt it from desktop to them, and on their servers. they're in switzerland, which has pretty stringent privacy laws. they also offer a vpn, which i'm considering, though the fast ones are substantially more than their mail service. though for now i'm content to get protonmail bridge installed and playing nicely with kmail. dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. We’ve updated some of the ways we collect and analyze user data in order to deliver services, content, and relevant advertising to you and protect against abuse. This includes: --Analyzing content and information (including emails, instant messages, posts, photos, attachments, and other communications) when you use our services. This allows us to deliver, personalize and develop relevant features, content, advertising and services -- Linking your activity on third-party sites and apps with information we have about you Providing anonymized and aggregated reports to other parties regarding user trends -- We’ve joined Verizon. By joining Verizon, Oath and its affiliates may share the information we receive among Verizon. Learn more about Verizon’s privacy practices. dont you just love that "protect against abuse" part? that's the same company that managed to let the information on a *billion* users get loose not long ago. no, thanks. so protonmail is essential. making it work with kmail is to cause my life to be nicer. dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. was just now trying to install the protonmail bridge bets, which is to allow existing email clients to work with protonmail. but the .deb install failed for lack of a litany of qt5 dependencies. i have a bunch of qt4 things installed and they seem to work alongside tde perfectly well. so i sought to install qt5-essentials, the first of the dependencies. after which -- i typically install packages from the commandline -- i got this unhappy display: The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: acpi amarok-common-trinity amarok-engine-xine-trinity amarok-trinity arts-trinity bluetooth bluez-utils crystalcursors desktop-effects-tde-trinity dmz-cursor-theme fonts-arabeyes foo2zjs fortune-mod fortunes-min fotoxx-common gir1.2-ges-1.0 gir1.2-gst-plugins-base-1.0 gir1.2-gstreamer-1.0 gir1.2-json-1.0 gstreamer1.0-gnonlin gtk-qt-engine-trinity gtk3-tqt-engine-trinity gwenview-trinity kaffeine-trinity karm-trinity katapult-trinity kbstate-trinity kdbusnotification-trinity keep-trinity kmag-trinity kmailcvt-trinity kmousetool-trinity kmplayer-base-trinity kmplayer-konq-plugins-trinity konversation-trinity kopete-trinity kpf-trinity kppp-trinity krdc-trinity krfb-trinity ksplash-engine-moodin-trinity ksystemlog-trinity ktorrent-trinity kubuntu-default-settings-trinity kubuntu-konqueror-shortcuts-trinity kvkbd-trinity landscape-client landscape-common lftp libavahi-tqt-1 libccfits0 libcfitsio3 libdbus-tqt-1-1c2 libges-1.0-0 libifp4 libjs-sphinxdoc libmp4v2-2 libnjb5 libqt5concurrent5 libraw9 librsync1 libscim8c2a min12xxw pnm2ppa powermanagement-interface pxljr python-gst-1.0 python-pylibacl python-pyxattr qt4-tqt-theme-engine rdesktop rdiff-backup scim-bridge-client-qt scim-im-agent scim-modules-socket screen speedcrunch splix strigi-daemon synaptic-trinity tqca-tls ttf-arabeyes ttf-arphic-ukai ttf-arphic-uming ttf-lao ttf-malayalam-fonts ttf-thai-tlwg ttf-unfonts-core Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them. oh, and it also deleted xorg, though i quickly reinstalled that. i'm hoping to make everyone play nice together, but before i do that i hope to back out of whatever i've gotten myself into, lest the machine surprise me at next reboot. help!! dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. okay, managed to fix whatever was ailing apt such that it doesn't want to uninstall half my software anymore (undid what i found in /var/log/apt/history.log), so now i'm just trying to find out if there's a way to get tde to peacefully coexist with qt5 stuff, without asking anybody to write or port anything, which i'm loath to do. if there's a way and somebody tells me of it, i'll report back on whether protonmail can be made to work with kmail as its client. dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. What about MTP in TDE
by deloptes 27 Apr '18

Hi, Is MTP well supported? I have exotic Sailfish phone and when connected it is recognized as Camera. When I try to write a file, it tells me it can not write to Camera, as it is unsupported. What do you think I should do? thanks for your ideas in advance regards

It only happens on one of the four accounts on my system; the others work fine with Trinity. I created a brand new account and it works flawlessly, so there must be something broken in that one account, not in the Trinity installation. Any clues as to what sort of files/directories are involved? Just exactly what is xdg and what does it do/is it good for? Strange messages at startup for one account
by Leslie Turriff 26 Apr '18

26 Apr '18

Hi, On one account on my OpenSuSE Leap 42.3 system (the main account, of course), I'm getting these messages after the login screen and before the desktop appears: 1) > The R14-xdg-update script has been run at least once. > The script is not successfully updating. > The script will run with each login until corrected. > Please contact an administrator or take appropriate administrative action to > correct the problem. > The error code is 9. 2) > Some Trinity profile R14 XDG compliance updates failed. > Check applications-tdemenuedit.menu for '<filename>kde-' in > /var/tmp/kdecache-leslie/r14-xdgupdate-validation-test-9.tct. 3) > The R14-xdg-update script has been run at least once. > The script is not successfully updating. > The script will run with each login until corrected. > Please contact an administrator or take appropriate administrative action to > correct the problem. > The error code is 9. > Common failures include file and directory permissions. (These messages are displayed using xmessage, and can't be copied/pasted since the desktop isn't active, so the above is my hand-copied version, which has all the words, but not necessarily on the same lines.) So I looked into the indicated file, and indeed there are a plethora of lines containing <filename>kde-... (see attached). Apparently there are 'file and directory permissions' problems /somewhere./ I have looked at the permissions of all files in ~/.kde and they look okay (but is owner rw- sufficient?) I looked at the r14-xdg-update script, but the code is opaque (at least to me). I tried renaming ~/.kde to something else but the problem persists; also tried removing socket-dir and tmp-dir, but that doesn't help either. The script contains this unhelpful comment: > # This script should be needed to run only once, but corner cases > # and file/directory permissions could cause incomplete updates. > # > # TODO: How to handle environments where files/directories are locked > # administratively or are owned by root and can't be updated. > # The nominal validation checks in this script provide some notice > # but no direct remedy. > # > # TODO: How to update profile directories not named $HOME/.trinity and $TDEHOME > # is not yet declared when running this script. I'm not at all sure where to look and what to look for beyond this. How can I get past this irritating situation? Leslie

a few barely on-topic questions

greets, everybody . . . i'm trying to set up dnscrypt on my desktop and laptop machines, both of which are running tde atop ubuntu 14.04. (i know. one of these days, when i have a week, i'll move 'em both over to full debian.) the tutorials i've found on this make assumptions as to desktop utilities that i think are not tde. to wit: Open the session and startup manager and add the following to the Application Autostart Menu. sudo dnscrypt-proxy -R opendns -a 127.0.0.2:53 -u dnscrypt what in tde corresponds to the "session and startup manager"? there's a gui for dnscript-proxy, but there's no binary for it and i don't have time to sort out dependencies (up to and including QT5), and given the changes that have come to linux since last i much tinkered with its innards i have no idea where one can even insert dna nameservers anymore -- the old places now all get overwritten at boot. grr. now an actual on-topic question: i remember when i upgraded to 14.04 in late 2016, i was told that there were problems getting tde to work happily atop 16.04. is this still the case, or am i safe un upgrading to a newer ubuntu while keeping tde? thanks! dep Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email. Problem installing Trinity Desktop on OpenSuSE 42.3

You need only reformat / (root). /home is left untouched. If you have a computer with a small amount of ram and/or slower CPU, I recommended a swap partition of no more than 2 gigs. Example: swap (sda1) / (root sda2) /home (sda3) There have been occasions when it became necessary to reinstall the OS (Ex. crackmonkey decided to make "room" by logging in a root and deleting stuff). Having the sep /home saved all of the user data and settings etc. My setup I actually have sep hard drives for things like /home /media /software etc. However, if this is a test machine, I wouldn't bother. No point to it. Kate

Remove session lock?
by Thierry de Coulon 07 Apr '18

07 Apr '18

I'm trying to setup a machine to autostart at a given time, do record something and then shutdown. Autostarting works with: echo `date -d 'YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss ' '+%s'` > /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm but this seems to work only if I put the computer in suspend mode (if I shutdown the computer does not come back to life). However, when the computer starts from suspend, the session is locked... and I am not there to unlock it. I've searched TDE's control panel without luck. Is there a way to remove the auto-lock feature? Thierry

Incorrect digital clock time
by D. R. Evans 05 Apr '18

05 Apr '18

I'm not sure where to report this: I have three 24-hour TDE clocks in a panel: one on local time; one on London time; and one on UTC. The London and UTC clocks are reading the same time, but I discovered yesterday that in fact London is already on summer time (and has been for nearly a week, I understand), so the London time should be displaying a number one hour higher than UTC. Rolling release distro with Trinity?
by Dan Youngquist 25 Mar '18

Hi all, I'm considering the possibility of changing to a rolling release distro. Ideally, it should be easy to install using an existing separate /home partition, have good multimedia support, and work well with TDE. Does anyone have any suggestions? Greetings; One of my boys sent me this video, video3gpp2950.3g2, claims to be an mpeg4, to show what it is he is doing on a new job, which is fixing up the damaged electricals after all these nor-easters. The menu system says noatun, when I click on it in kmail, but its not even opening a work window when noatun is entered in a terminal window or clicked on in the menu. Doctors, modern doctors, are useless and one needs a good environment. Sadly it's harder to find these days. On the bright side, (wee bit brighter) I was told in 1999, I would be dead in 5 years (long story) by 2 doctors. So called experts in the fields. The both dead within 5 years. I'm not happy they died but I can't help but laugh at the irony. Moral of the story is, don't give up. No matter what others tell you. Fight to the end. "Start Job"
by Baron 19 Mar '18

19 Mar '18

Hi Guys, An annoying issue has appeared ! I'm running Q4OS, Trinity Desktop on an AMD dual core machine with 2Gb ram and 500Gb HDD. Problem: On boot up, maybe every second or third time, I get a black screen with "[*** ] Start job running - ~0.XX seconds. 1:30." If I Ctrl Alt Del the machine restarts with the same screen and message. If I let it continue, I then get a page of text with "Ctrl D" to continue, "Or enter Root Password to Login" Using "Ctrl D" everything just stops and I have to hard boot the machine, It then goes back to the start job again. If I login with the root password, I get pages and pages of what I think maybe logs. At the end of this if I "StartX" I get my normal desktop. At this point if I logout and hard boot the machine, everything comes up as normal. I haven't a clue what is going on here... Help ! Thanks Guys: -- Best Regards: Baron

advice for completion of a stunt
by dep 16 Mar '18

16 Mar '18

so, to see if i could do it, i've flashed ubuntu 13.04 to a 2012 asus nexus tablet. to my surprise, wifi and such work. *not* to my surprise, i hate hate hate the ubuntu default desktop and want to replace it as soon as i can. after some poking around (made more interesting by an onscreen keyboard that comes and goes as it wishes, irrespective of whether text needs to be entered, which is annoying when you don't need it and maddening when you do), i got a terminal running and sought to install some of the essentials. (by tradition, the first thing i install on a new linux system is mc, because it is the best tool to get me out of whatever trouble i get myself into.) and i discovered that all the repositories are now 404. am hoping to find someplace where they are archived so as to severely edit my sources list and get, among other things, tde. the corresponding debian distro is raring. it does sort of run (though about half the stuff is canonical trying to sell me music and stuff, which i think they've stopped doing anyway) but without a decent desktop i can't imagine how i can put it through its paces. and yes, the icons are tiny, beyond the fact that ubuntu touch kinds sucks in general. in tde i can make the icons bigger. i'm hoping to justify the expenditure of time . . . and tun tde on a tablet. -- dep The shortest distance between you and playing great acoustic guitar: the great new instructional DVDs from Marjorie Thompson, available at www.MarjorieThompson.com
