TDE not shutting down when using LightDM, anyone else have this issue?
by Michael . 17 Oct '16

17 Oct '16

TDE isn't shutting down when LightDM is the default (actually only) login manager. Multiple machines (x86 and x86-64) with Debian Stretch fully up to date using the Preliminary Stable Builds repository and LightDM as the login manager. Go to shutdown the machines and TDE merely send the user back to LightDm (as though they only selected log out) where they have to shut the machines down in LightDM. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a simple fix (while still using LightDM and no other login manager) or do I just need to file a bug report?

TDE equivalent to kdelibs4c2a?
by Michael . 16 Oct '16

I am trying to install adept (from etch) on TDE but it keeps telling me that the dependency of kdelibs4c2a is uninstalable. I would like to find out that the TDE equivalent for this package is so I can change the dependency in the control file because I am going to try to rebuild the adept packages in stretch and sid. Cheers. Michael.

KMail/Akregator font in system tray is too big
by Jan Stolarek 14 Oct '16

14 Oct '16

Hi all, I just upgraded from Debian 7 + TDE 3.5.13.2 to Debian 8 + TDE R14. To save myself from tiresome configuration I copied my ~/.trinity folder to the new machine. Quite surprisingly, everything works! Except for one tiny bit. Font size used by KMail and Akregator to display number of unread messages in system tray is HUGE (in fact, it's so big that it does not fit on the icon and is cropped). How can I make it smaller? I also want to give a huge "Thank you" to developers of Trinity! You're doing a really awesome job. serious problem with wifi cannot connect anymore
by Uwe Brauer 21 Sep '16

21 Sep '16

Hi This problem is much more serious than my other one, since I only have for coming days wifi available, however one laptop does not connect anymore. I am on Kubuntu 14.04 and the connection does not work neigher with the plasma networkmananger nor with tdenetworkmanager. I deleted a link from /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf to /etc/resolv.conf Then the following file was created as /etc/resolv.conf # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN nameserver 127.0.1.1 search telefonica.net Even as root I cannot anymore modify nor delete it, I wanted to set again the link mentioned above but without success. When I start tdenetworkmanager I obtain the following error (no idea whether this related to the above problem) any help is strongly appreciated since outwise I have to reinstall everything. tdenetworkmanager some progress

Hi I run Sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf which did not help, but I deleted the line dns=dnsmasq in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf I still obtain the message of the sort ,---- | [TDE NM Backend ERROR] | [/tmp/buildd/tdelibs-trinity-14.0.4~pre12/tdecore/tdehw/networkbackends/network-manager/network-manager.cpp:1823] | Attempting to access the network-manager VPN service returned: | org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name | org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.VPN.Plugin was not provided by any | .service files [TDE NM Backend ERROR] | [/tmp/buildd/tdelibs-trinity-14.0.4~pre12/tdecore/tdehw/networkbackends/network-manager/network-manager.cpp:1823] | Attempting to access the network-manager VPN service returned: | org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name | org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.VPN.Plugin was not provided by any | .service files `---- but it does connect! However the icon does not change to the usual connect sign (while in my other with kubuntu 14.04/trinity everything works smoothly) I tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure network-manager-tde did not really work, I can disable wireless but I cannot switch to offline and then back to online mode, the icon looks that if there is only offline activated. I really don't want to reinstall but this is quite a bit annoying. Thanks Uwe Brauer

[SOLVED] Undefined color: "WINDOW_FOREGROUND" and the old dot.trinity
by A M 20 Sep '16

20 Sep '16

The issue was solved, thanks to the most useful comments by three list participants. The first advice, by Gerhard Zintel, was a suggestion to simply uncheck one of the preferences via the TDE Control Center: *" I had the same issue before. I cannot clearly remember but try to un-check "Apply colors to non-TDE applications" in TDE Control Center => Appearence & Themes => Colors. "* That immediately worked, thanks Gerhard! But then the next advice came from Nick Koretsky which also commented on the Gerhard's advice: *That's a bad solution - this checkbox is unfortunately named, it should be named "apply styles' - it govern not only colors, but also button styles, button placements and fonts in gtk apps The correct solution is to add following to you .xsession file ( sleep 10 xrdb -all -query|sed -e 's#[A-Z_]*BACKGROUND# gray90#' \* *-e 's#[A-Z_]*FOREGROUND# Black#' \ -e 's#[A-Z_]*HIGHLIGHT# White#' \ -e 's#[A-Z_]*LOWLIGHT# Black#'|xrdb -merge ) &* I tried this as well, and it works and seems in fact to be more appropriate for our environment. I've applied it by adding to the system-wide script that is executed at login and does it one time per session. It works pretty well (and has no impact on gtk applications). So we'll stick to this method. Finally, another advice came from "iadest": *Hello Try to edit ~/.Xresourced adding: *.WINDOW_FOREGROUND: black Then execute command: xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources I had similar problems with Perl/Tk and *.BACKGROUND color. Maybe this solution will work for Emacs too.* *MCbx* As this solution was basically quite similar to that of Nick's which was already nicely implemented, I did not try this.. In any case, these advices saved me a day. Thanks a lot for all those who replied! Andy. ------ ORIGINAL MAIL ------ Hello, I am happily using Trinity since a couple of years, and never had any insolvable issues with it. However, currently I am standing before a "blocker" confguration issue, and would highly appreciate some useful hint/help from the community. This is what happens: - I've installed a remote Centos 7 host equipped with a complete Trinity 14.0.3-1.el7.x86_64 desktop. The desktop is being accessed via Freenx and, as this machine will also be used by people with French and German keyboards, the working keyboard switcher apllet present in the 14.03 distro seems to become a really indispensable feature. - Everyrthing seemingly works well, the desktop looks beautiful, but very soon I discovered that there is a couple off issues. In particular, I cannot start emacs on this machine, it ends up with this error: [ Undefined color: "WINDOW_FOREGROUND" ]. Atfter a bit of googling, it came out that this is a known problem, and it has to do with KDE configuration. People then stated the the issue was essentially solved by simply migrating to the updated version of KDE and no other clues were provided. - After quite some time spent on searches, I decided to replace "dot.trinity" and "dot.tderc" with their well-customized versions taken from one of my working Centos 6 machines with Trinity 3.5.13-15.1 (which in turn, inherited them from Centos 5 with KDE 3.5.4-1). Surprise: emacs worked like a charm, and also some other issues like remote app submission not working before were gone! - The old "dot.trinity" configuration, however, has an outdated K-menu, and it does not allow me to add the Keyboard Switcher applet. Thus I have a sort of a "blocker" situation. On one hand, I am almost done with an old "dot.trinity" and may dig in further and try to replace the K-menu under dot.trinity/share/config (this would hopefully give me a chance to add the switcher). Or I have to dig more into the issue of the brand-new install (no good ideas of where to begin, though..) The funny thing is, there is in fact an almost-working solution. Thus it is only a TDE configuration issue: something is present, or missing, or set up in a wrong way.. Thanks a lot ahead for any there or a useful hint on how to proceed! Andy.

I've looked in the File Associations settings, but I can't see a way to fix files without an extension. Files with an extension are recognized just fine. But konqueror should be able to check the magic number thing to determine the type of a file, but something caused this to stop working.

If I use `file` from the command line like this `file --mime-type FILENAME`, it will give the correct mime type. GTK programs also work correctly. It appears to be something specific with TDE. systemsettings and tdenetworkmanager switching between wired and wireless problem with DNS server
by Uwe Brauer 16 Sep '16

16 Sep '16

Hi - I used /opt/trinity/bin/systemsettings for setting the wired net - and tdenetworkmanager for the wireless net. Maybe this is not smart and I had no problems, when passing from wired --> wireless but problems when passing from wireless --> wired since the wireless deleted the DNS server entries in the resolv.conf So usually I manually copied a backup of resolv.conf to /etc and run sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart But this does not work anymore in 14.04 as we discussed. So what is the smart way of configuring wired/wireless and what is the smart way of switching between wired/wireless???? Relying entirely on systemsettings or on tdenetworkmanager? Uwe Brauer

I installed Kubuntu 14.04 and trinity via deb http://mirror.xcer.cz/trinity-sb trusty deps-r14 main-r14 deb-src http://mirror.xcer.cz/trinity-sb trusty deps-r14 main-r14 Everything went smooth wireless net can be configured with tdenetworkmanager, but when I try to set up the wired net, via the networktool I run into a problem. I use all the parameters I used in previous trinity + Kubuntu installations (namely 10.04 and 12.04) static IP number DNS server Gateway. The connection works for a couple of seconds and then crashes the problem see to be the Gateway, when I restart the configuration tool the value has been deleted. Anybody has an idea what do? That is a very serious problem, right now use the Wifi connection, but this has severe restriction in the network I am using. Thanks Uwe Brauer

Dear Trinity users, I can't get KMilo plugin to work on my ThinkPad R61 under Debian Wheezy. Firstly, I need kmilo-legacy-trinity for the KMilo plugin to show up in the Control Center. The /dev/nvram device exists and has corect permissions (666). I select the checkbox to activate KMilo but nothing happens. None of the special buttons work, eg. when I press the ThinkVantage button it does not launch Konsole. The only things that work are sound and brightness control buttons, but these used to work without KMilo. Also, I believe KMilo should provide a nice OSD for sound and brightness changes but I have no OSD when changing any of these. Can anyone offer suggestions how to solve, or at least diagnose, the problem? fail2ban advice needed
by Gene Heskett 28 Aug '16

28 Aug '16

Greetings all; Is there someone familiar with fail2ban here? I just installed it and started it with the installation defaults, which I do not know since the init script has no "dump" option. However that bit of hungry guard dog only protects this machine, leaving the other 4 or sometimes 5 on my local network still open. So specifically, is there a way to broadcast the rules it applies to the other 4 or 5 machines, protecting them at the same time? Or possibly broadcast them to the router, which is running dd-wrt, and which is considered one of the more bulletproof reflash's about. I may be lucky, but since I do have a port forward to allow my web server, there is a potential attack point. Advice to a fail2ban new bee? Thank you. See the announcement on /. today & read the link to the post from the guys that found it that is in the story, UCsomething IIRC, see below. A closer read may answer it. <https://ucrtoday.ucr.edu/39030> And please keep things like this on the list you read it from. A PM is unfair to the other readers of the list you read it on, so I'll cc the three lists it was cross posted to as it sounds pretty serious to me. And I just noted that the sysctl command you quoted above is incorrect, its sysctl -p, not sysctl.p. Maybe that helps? Workaround for serious TCP exploit
by Felmon Davis 10 Aug '16

10 Aug '16

Greets! what must we who are using trinity do to avoid the tcp exploit? I found the following instructions from L. Weinstein's privacy mail list but they don't corrrespond to anything in my sysctl.conf. Felmon ----- quote ----- Workaround for serious TCP exploit previously discussed https://plus.google.com/+LaurenWeinstein/posts/gWSj2sYExoB Here is the recommended workaround for Linux/Android clients/servers for the serious TCP exploit discussed in: https://threatpost.com/serious-tcp-bug-in-linux-systems-allows-traffic-hija… This one will work for Ubuntu as is, and for various other Linux distributions with suitable modifications. The point is to bump the ACK limit way up. Note that some of the pages announcing this exploit appear to be contaminated with browser hijack "fake technical support" warning sites. Beware. Close your browser immediately if you hit one if you can, otherwise reboot and don't restore crashed pages. The workaround for the TCP exploit: Open /etc/sysctl.conf, append a command: /net.ipv4/tcp_challenge_ack_limit = 999999999 Use "sysctl -p" to update the configuration. _______________________________________________ privacy mailing list https://lists.vortex.com/mailman/listinfo/privacy

Problem on ubuntu 16.04 with systemd and tdm-trinity and a proposed solution
by update 09 Aug '16

On booting a new installed xenial with trinity tdm I get the error message: "A start job is running for Hold until boot process finishes up(time/no limit)" which prevents starting the console logins. Using sddm or lightdm works together with systemd. I have looked into the systemd configuration of them both and changed the file /lib/systemd/system/tdm.service according to the sddm configuration to [Unit] Description=Trinity Display Manager Documentation=man:tdm-trinity(1) Conflicts=getty(a)tty7.service After=getty(a)tty7.service # Ordering Conflicts=plymouth-quit-wait.service After=systemd-user-sessions.service plymouth-start.service plymouth-quit-wait.se OnFailure=plymouth-quit.service [Service] # temporary safety check until all DMs are converted to correct # display-manager.service symlink handling ExecStartPre=/bin/sh -c '[ "$(basename $(cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager 2> ExecStart=/opt/trinity/bin/tdm Restart=always RestartSec=1s With this file the plymouth/systemd handshake seams to work. Maybe this helps someone else. Stef

[probably OT] How to add a scancode?
by iadest＠o2.pl 07 Aug '16

Hello This is probably not related to TDE, but Linux in general (Debian 8?). I have a multimedia PS/2 keyboard "BTC 9001" (evtest reports it as "AT Translated Set 2 keyboard") and I try to use all its keys. Some are typical multimedia keys, while I program some other to launch applications in my TDE using "Keyboard actions" panel. Unfortunately not all keys are detected in OS by scancodes. Two keys generate only a EV_MSC event, while not giving scancode. Is it possible, by e.g. udev hwdb rule, to assign scancodes to these events? Here are results of evtest events test: Testing ... Update problems I don't master
by Thierry de Coulon 07 Aug '16

07 Aug '16

So I took a look at my packages and saw that there were updates to TDE (from 14.0.0 to 14.0.3, openSUSE here). I first choose "update if newer" for all my packages (in Yast) and ended in a disaster: apparently minimal X with a terminal, message about wrong permissions for Xorg. Setting these permissions right let me start X... but only in KDE 4! I thought the problem was with openSUSE, so I restored and tried updating only Trinity. This time the message is: .servauth.1668 does not exist cannot open /var/log/xorg.1.log please consult X.org foundation support There are plenty of lines with (EE) too Same correction to Xorg now brings up Icevm. I'm out of my depth here. I restored again and will make a copy install to investigate the matter. I understand this may be openSUSE linked but any suggestion can help. Not urgent however, 14.0.0 is running very well... Thierry

MX-15 sound loss in VLC
by Joe 06 Aug '16

06 Aug '16

I've had some sound problems in MX-15 with VLC and Trinity. The issue is solved... sort of. This is a link to the discussion: http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=40197 The short version is: After I installed KDE Plasma Desktop, the problems cleared up. Recently, they started again. If I log out of TDE, log into Plasma Desktop, log out of Plasma, then back into TDE, I have sound again in VLC.

New problem Ubuntu 16.04 TDE 14.04
by Jonesy 04 Aug '16

04 Aug '16

I'm trying to get moneydance to run on on 64-bit Ubuntu 16.04 -- the last application necessary to permit my wife to move off Windows forever... (Moneydance is a financial bookkeeping Java program somewhat ala Quicken.) I've installed the new "amd64" moneydance as instructed by their website, and I get this when I try to run it: |$ Moneydance |[kcrash] TDECrash: Application 'output.logl-gtk-tqt-application' crashing... .. and I'm dumped back at the command line prompt. About half the time I do NOT get the "TDECrash" message. I am simply dumped back at the command line prompt after 5-6 seconds. I just know if I tell the moneydance support I have a "TDECrash", they'll ask me to bring it up under Gnome.... _All_ I have is Trinity. How to debug this "TDECrash"? Jonesy

By Re: [trinity-users] LiveCD for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
by Joseph Thames 03 Aug '16

03 Aug '16

I have a specific need for a tailored appliance version of what you are proposing. It is the bootable client appliance remote-desktop front-end for an end-user F95-based modeling language <http://www.metacalculus.com/lens/Spiritext.html> surrounded by xterm menu scaffolding <http://www.metacalculus.com/lens/MIDUS.html> in Perl. The remote desktop server is configured as a TDE R14 Ubuntu 14.04 Togglebox VPS now. It is part of the scaffolding for an end-user development (EUD) type of workflow called quality assurance and evolution (QAE) to extend a science exploration modeling technology called MetaCalculus <http://www.metacalculus.com>, which has been under continuous development for 50 years. End users can connect to this remote middleware via NX remote desktops <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NX_technology> from the bootable appliances, similarly configured as TDE-Ubuntu or TDE-PCLinux <http://trinity.mypclinuxos.com/> distros on LiveCD or LIVE USB sticks. NX remote desktops communicate through FreeNX server apps, and NoMachine <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NoMachine>, Remmina <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remmina> or X2GO <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X2Go> client apps. The front-end PC and Togglebox TDE desktops are preconfigured mirrors that merge with each other, each having 20 virtual desktops accessed though side panel pagers (client-right opposing server-left). Taskbar panels similarly oppose each other (client-top opposing server-bottom). This is the front-end of a server-based MetaCalculus "automation lab" (AutoLab). This dual mirrored OS client-server "AutoLab ensemble desktop environment <http://www.metacalculus.com/doc/MIDUS/AutoLab_Desktops.html>" is designed for shared menu-guided workflow of an EUD-QAE team on a collection of virtual desktops, some on client and some on server via several connected interactive sessions spanning multiple servers, where up to 400 (20 x 20) sessions may be running simultaneously from a single PC workstation. And since NX supports desktop sharing, the desktop collection can span teams of overlapping user workflow sharing of teachers and students. As you can imagine, this dual OS Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) ensemble is designed as an integrated front and middleware interactive workflow environment, which in turn fronts a background massively parallel Docker batch system for cloud supercomputing, using AWS et al <http://www.metacalculus.com/AutoKey/Linux_VAR_Wholesale_AutoLabs.png>. It can integrate "super SaaS" collaborative open-source development and K-12 end-user STEM education <http://www.metacalculus.com/AutoKey/Retail_Linux_USB_Appliances.png>. The modeling language, an F95 Extension "NeoFortran" supporting the modeling solver and kernel API of the original mainframe PROSE language <http://www.metacalculus.com/doc/imgzoom/HolonModelingInPROSE2.png>, can operate on all three of these computing layers (client PC, Togglebox VPS, or AWS et al) in various configurations (from client tablets for K-12 students to Togglebox VPS's for developers to AWS Docker jobs for high-fidelity big-data simulation models globally optimized in massive parallel jobs). Since the NeoFortran is an optimization modeling language <http://www.metacalculus.com/doc/FC/Synthetic_Calculus.pdf> which can optimize system-dynamics models <https://www.google.com/search?q=System+Dynamics+Images&espv=2&tbm=isch&tbo=…> translated via the XMILE protocol <http://www.metacalculus.com/AutoKey/MCSD/XMILE_Example.png>; and since optimization searching is embarrassingly parallel <http://www.metacalculus.com/doc/DigiCal/MOBHeraJupiter.html>, this integrated environment can support interactive SERIAL modeling of parallel optimization processing <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uLtZUZybn3uxYIxrmB5If8bNmWxM_ZASbfP…> in the cloud (similar to web searches), *without any parallel programming*. Simplification of this parallel processing is what I am working on now. Although I am a Trinity user, and have been since the fatal KDE4 fork that set back my downstream development by several years, I don't participate in this forum much, but I would like to see Trinity win the desktop race. As you can probably tell, most of the higher infrastructure I have shown in the links above was accomplished before that plasmoid fork. Ironically KDE (as one of the original two Linux desktop environments) is still more generally sanctioned than TDE. But the general trend (Windows style war) that forking trend was part of has hobbled the whole Linux community in another pursuit of the Tower of Babel. I would like to see the Trinity community adopt this LiveCD/USBstick Linux-boot ensemble as a QAE project and expand its desktop functionality. There are many TDE improvements I can think of that this QAE effort would mandate. Not the least would be integrated QA with the NX clients, which would significantly improve overall Linux interface reliability. This effort would enable TDE to trump the KDE style leadership with EUD-friendly practicality. The intent is to adapt more of an EUD "walled garden" approach, like Apple has achieved with the Mac, in order to broaden Linux EUD. In the above links you see evidence of a host of integrated EUD automation apps designed to lift the OS development focus out of the "Windows style swamp" that the Linux downstream community has blundered into. My intent is to emerge new EUD order out of this chaos by giving* the original computing language new life in the clouds: optimization of simulation modeling in parallel processing, without parallel programming*. This can be the killer app to transform the industry the way Fortran did originally, by exploding diversity in R&D; something IT middlemen cannot accomplish on their own, because they are not diversified enough to match the diversity of science, like end-users are. Thus we need to simplify and generalize advanced Linux EUD as this ensemble aims to do. I've just installed the Trinity LiveCD tde-ubuntu-14.04-desktop-r14.0.3-amd64.iso and performed all the updates. Hello, guys! I want to know if there is some forecast on getting rid of autotools and using only cmake, mainly because I want to port trinity to NixOS, and it would be easier taht way. Thanks in advance! Torres

enigmail (GPG) with kmail-trinity
by andre_debian＠numericable.fr 30 Jul '16

Does anyone has succeeded to install "enigmail" with kmail-trinity, or an application similar to enigmail ? The objective is to use GPG keys in kmail-trinity. enigmail works with thunderbird, icedove (Debian), but not sure with kmail-trinity. Have a nice day. André

And what about installing the Ubuntu 14.04 Trinity live CD first and then apt-get dist-upgrade? This would upgrade Ubuntu to 16.04 with minimal risk. I did this to go from 12.04 to 14.04 without any glitch. Just a hint from my own (successful) experience.

Re: "Could not find mime type application/octet-stream"
by Pavle 30 Jul '16

Hi, I use Trinity on Arch Linux. I didn't use a display manager, but rather started Trinity and I3 through .xinitrc script (I don't know if it is relevant). After installing Trinity, some of GTK apps (Midori, dwb) failed to start in I3, with similar message: "Could not find mime type application/octet-stream" and segfaut. Didn't test in Trinity. First quick fix was to set an environment variable GSETTINGS_SCHEMA_DIR=/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas but some other apps (SpaceFM) still segfaulted after many error messages. Then I disabled /etc/profile.d/trinity.sh and started it only when starting Trinity, which solved my problem.

LiveCD for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
by Marvin Jones 30 Jul '16

30 Jul '16

I am building a new workstation and I really, Really, REALLY want to fire it up with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with Trinity R14.0.3. Ref: https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/LiveCDs , has anyone built a Live CD for Xenial yet? Or, is a Live CD under construction? Or, has anyone installed installed TDE 14.0.3 on Ubuntu 16.04 yet and could/would share their experiences if I run into "challenges" during a raw install? I don't believe I've seen any chatter about Ubuntu 16.04 on this list. And, I really do not want to start out 2-years old with Ubuntu 14.04. "Inertia" usually prevents me from upgrading releases once I have a solid linux workstaion humming along. Hell, my primary workstation is $ cat /etc/lsb-release DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=10.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=lucid DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS" ... with TDE 3.5.13.3 Thanks for reading this, and thanks for TDE!! "Could not find mime type application/octet-stream"
by Curt Howland 27 Jul '16

27 Jul '16

Hi. I seem to have messed up the file associations list. I went into Trinity Control Center to add .webm as a video file type, and somehow deleted something so that now I'm getting "Could not find mime type application/octet-stream" errors every time I drop a file onto the desktop. Maybe I could recreate the entry, or copy the default file associations list back over my user .trinity list? I don't want to have to reinstall everything just to clear a "Sorry" pop-up. [trinity-users] TDE session won't start in buntu 16.04
by Felix Miata 25 Jul '16

25 Jul '16

On attempt to start session either via TDM greeter or startx, popup message reports: "There was an error setting up inter-process communications for TDE. The message returned by the system was: Could not read network connection list. /home/username/.DCOPserver_hostname_0 Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running!" Then on dismissing that popup, another reports: "Could not start tdeinit. Check your installation." So, check how? What's supposed to start dcopserver? Is the "cannot open" message in .xsession-errors saying that some dependency is broken? I see mention of libbfd there, but 2.26.1-system.so (not libbfd-2.26-system.so) does exist in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/. [trinity-users] minimalist instructions added to openSUSE & Debian Wiki pages
by Felix Miata 18 Jul '16

18 Jul '16

The differences in package naming across distros in combination with the weakness of my memory has been making it a bit of a pain to create a new minimal installation, thus these alterations: To https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Debian_Trinity_Repository_Installation_Inst… I added: The R14.0.3 tde-trinity package is a comprehensive meta-package. To install minimalist, substitute tdebase-trinity for tde-trinity, and append tdm-trinity if you wish to use TDM as your display manager. To https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/OpenSUSE_Trinity_Repository_Installation_In… I added: The trinity-desktop package is a comprehensive meta-package. [trinity-users] 14.0.3 corrupts sound destination in openSUSE 42.1
by Felix Miata 17 Jul '16

17 Jul '16

On other PCs with openSUSE (42.1, 13.2 & 13.1) and TDE 14.0.x that have no speaker built into the motherboard, I've not experienced $SUBJECT, sound simply works as expected. On this PC, a SFF Dell Optiplex 780, aplay and speaker-test work as expected whether run in multi-user.target or graphical.target, as does Youtube sound running an IceWM session, producing sound from accessory speakers plugged into the green jack, only if a TDE session is not running or has not been running since the last instance of 'alsactl restore'. Speakers always work as expected in openSUSE Tumbleweed running Plasma5 or openSUSE 13.2 or 13.1 running KDE4 (none of which have their respective pulseaudio packages installed). IOW, TDE redirects sound to the internal speaker that should be going to external speakers, only on this one PC. Might there be a fix for this that does not involve polluting the installation with the otherwise unnecessary Pulseaudio rpm and its deps? output of alsa-info.sh: http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/SUSE/421/alsa-info-gx780-s421.txt Various installed rpms: alsa-1.0.29-10.1.x86_64 alsa-firmware-1.0.29-3.2.noarch alsa-plugins-1.0.29-10.1.x86_64 alsa-utils-1.0.29-9.1.x86_64 arts-1.5.10-66.2.x86_64 libasound2-1.0.29-10.1.x86_64 libpulse-mainloop-glib0-7.0-5.1.x86_64 libpulse0-7.0-5.1.x86_64 trinity-arts-1.5.10-14.0.3_1.oss421.x86_64 trinity-kmix-14.0.3-1.oss421.x86_64 trinity-libarts-akode-14.0.3-1.oss421.x86_64 trinity-libarts-audiofile-14.0.3-1.oss421.x86_64 trinity-libarts-mpeglib-14.0.3-1.oss421.x86_64 trinity-libarts-xine-14.0.3-1.oss421.x86_64 (as yet ignored) opensuse mailing list thread (from before I found alsactl restore helped outside of a TDE session): https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2016-07/msg00283.html -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Bigger mouse pointer is too "translucent"
by Gene Heskett 08 Jul '16

08 Jul '16

Greetings all; I have tde R14.0.#up-to-date installed on the computer running one of my milling machines, and there are occasions when I pick up the mouse to use it about 4 feet away. Thats getting close to its range limit as both the keyboard and mouse are RF. (bluetooth?) So I set it for the biggest mouse pointer in order to see it better from that distance. But while the std sized pointer seems opaque, the larger one is quite translucent which reduces its visual contrast. Is this fixable to be fully opaque someplace? Thanks. kmail & gpg
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 04 Jul '16

04 Jul '16

Hi all! I have a strange issue with kmail and gpg (TDE 14.0.4, devuan jessie) : When I open kmail and click on an encrypted mail, pinentry-gtk-2 asks for the gpg password once. When I click on any other encrypted mail, it simply opens that mail decrypted - just as i like it. gpg-agent ist running, kpgp is running. On a second computer and different user account when I click on an encrypted mail I get asked for the gpg password every time (which is quite naging with ~ 100 encrypted mails per day). gpg-agent is not running, kpgp is running. Starting gpg-agent by hand does not change this behaviour. So, where should I start to look? Is it correct to assume that kmail starts kgpg which starts gpg-agent? how can I get debug output? tdenetworkmanager can connect to some wifi networks, but not to all (Enterprise)
by Uwe Brauer 03 Jul '16

hi Running Trinity 14.X on Kubuntu 14.04 I face the following problem with tdenetworkmanager: - I can connect to private wifi networks, - when I try to connect to enterprise type of network (eduroam, a sort of universal network setting for universities in europe), which requires a bit more complicated authentication I obtain the following error - Insufficient permissions - network manager not working - DBUS failure That is sort of bizarre, since I could connect to these networks using the trinity 3.5.X series on 10.04. Anybody has an idea? thanks Uwe Brauer

Why does Trinity depend on Samba?
by Thierry de Coulon 03 Jul '16

03 Jul '16

If I want to delete all of Samba, kmail-trinity, konqueror-trinity, tdebase-trinity would get destroyed too (Raspbian Jessie here, but I've come accross the same problem with the other distributions). I fail to see why these dependencies exist. I can imagine situations where kmail, konqueror and tdebase could need Samba, but many more where they don't. I have no Windows machine so I never use samba. Thierry

Fresh install of TDE R14.0.3
by Dobigeon Nicolas 26 Jun '16

26 Jun '16

Hello all, I just did a fresh install of Debian Jessie on my main notebook with the lastest TDE. And i have to tell it's a pleasure to see that everything work out of the box ( the most of the hotkeys, screen brightness, etc ...) I tried different artwork inclued in the repo, But it's the first time i use the "lipstik" tqt style, it a very nice style, and look modern on TDE. Also "Crystal" windows decoration is impressive to look modern. Can you tell me where we have to put icons, tqt style and windows decoration on TDE ? is it in "/home/user/.icons .themes" ... or in "/home/user/.trinity/share ..." ? Thanks to the team. See you ;)

No mounted medium icon on Desktop
by Thierry de Coulon 26 Jun '16

26 Jun '16

Hello all, I have a strange problem, that was not there a dew days ago, although I could not say exactly when (or why and how) it appeared: When I plug a CF card in my card reader, an icon appears on the desktop when I _mount_ the card (by clicking on it), a Konqueror windows opens BUT the icon disappears - which means I can't umount it with the mouse, I have to open a console and umount by hand. Of course I have checked that "Mounted removable medium" was selected to be displayed. It is. The only thing I changed recently was to set the Desktop Background to a slide show. I could not find in which file these settings are kept. Maybe someone has an idea what's going on? R 14.0.0 by the way. Thierry

start menu items categories
by Istvan Gabor 26 Jun '16

26 Jun '16

Hello: I've been using openSUSE with KDE3 for several years. Recently I installed trinity (last stable) on openSUSE 13.1. I am very satisfied with it so far. The only thing I miss know is how start menu items are organized. In openSUSE they are organized into submenus in 2 or 3 levels (eg System/Archiving/*, System/Desktop/* etc). Unfortunately trinity doesn't have this leveling, most programs are put under one main menu item. Eg the program lists in System menu almost fills my whole screen. Which files do I have to modify to have openSUSE type menu categories? Is it enough to adjust a file in /etc/xdg/menus or do I have to modify every single .desktop files belonging to the given applications, or something else? Thanks, Istvan

Upgrading from KDE3 to R14
by Jan Stolarek 26 Jun '16

Hi all, I have an old machine that still runs KDE 3. I plan to install Debian 8 with Trinity R14. Does R14 support settings migration from KDE3? Or will all the settings be lost? Odd error this evening
by Gene Heskett 24 Jun '16

24 Jun '16

Greetings all; As those of you the the USA know, Southern WV took a beating from the weather last night and today. Heavy rains, high winds combined to kill the power for about 25% of the states population, and threaten to drown quite a few. My own automatic 20 kw nat gas standby ran from about 3:20 Thursday morning until a final restart shortly after 18:00 local. So I am busy catching up on my email, when apparently my ups did not properly restart after one of the inevitable short term power up's when the line crews are closing circuits to see if they fault again because there yet another down tree laying on the lines a half mile around the corner. So I'm typing away on a message reply when the screen goes black, the ups has a low battery and kills the load. Restarting the ups was a matter of holding down the power button for 3 or 4 seconds, followed by a trip to the tower to tap its power switch. Everything solved as soon as its booted, right? Wrong... No /usr/bin/X to be found. I had to totally apt-get install --re-install all of the Xorg-server stuff, 35 or 40 packages, to get the missing /usr/bin/X. That may not have been the only package that was nuked by the untimely powerdown but I've no way to verify that. But why should a powerdown as unceremonious as pulling the plug, have deleted /usr/bin/X? It doesn't grok at this site. Clues? Thanks. install -f and where is the KControl center Mac X clone, in version 14
by Uwe Brauer 22 Jun '16

22 Jun '16

Hi I it seems that a bold sudo apt-get install -f Solved most (but maybe not all problems with my trinity installation). Be it as it may, when I logged in to Trinity, almost everything felt similar, save one (for me) very important thing. In earlier Kubuntu (for example 10.04) and earlier trinity versions (TDE v3.5.13.2) there were *two* control center, - the ugly vanilla kde control center - and a I presume a Kubuntu specific Mac OSX clone. I attach a screenshot. Now in Kubuntu 14.04+ Trinity R14.0.3 I cannot find the MacOSX clone anymore. Where is it? Was it deleted, taken out? For me it was one of the reasons to stay with Trinity, to have both a familiar environment which does not need to much resources but which is comfortable enough when it come to configuration, the KDE vanilla control center is much worse in this respect. Thanks and regards Uwe Brauer

Another hibernate issue
by deloptes 22 Jun '16

22 Jun '16

Hi all, there was/is a discussion about powersave features and options. I do not use it that often, but this week going to work with the train I decided to try it out and hibernated the notebook. It is Dell 5440. After power on all worked fine and it came up from hibernation. When the lock screen asked for password and I pressed some key it went again into hibernation state. The second time I powered on, I was able to unlock he screen and go on with my work. This was reproducable - I tried it twice the same behavior. How can this be debugged? regards

Auto fill - browser fields

new kaffeine plugin for firefox's
by Gene Heskett 14 Jun '16

14 Jun '16

Greetings all; I can see that its installed and should be calling kaffeine to service a quite wide range of video formats. Unfortunately, while kaffeine is installed and runs for other digital than tv broadcast, neither firefox is actually calling it. So while I can see videos, some on cnn, and some on nbc news in firefox's postcard sized video, nothing that I have been able to add, will call up kaffeine to play a youtube video. If I launch a copy and have it running, it seems to me that firefox should pass the data stream to the running copy of kaffeine. But its not happening, no reaction from kaffeine can be obtained from either version of firefox. So I installed the gxine launcher plugin. Looks like an identical list of acceptable video formats to that of kaffeine. Is there an about:config option to be set so this works? What else do I need to check? Thanks. Non-trivial switching
by J. Drahun 14 Jun '16

14 Jun '16

Hi all! I've found solution how to switch layouts with Ctrl+Shift. To be honest, it was sad to found that old "feature", requiring something more than click three checkboxes in the "Xkb Options" still exists. Why can't I set Ctrl+Shift in the TDE Control Center as a shortcut? (Ctrl+Shift shortcut is interpreted as Ctrl + ISO_Next_Group) Why it is necessary to edit config files? I hope someday this behaviour will be fixed. Best wishes, J. Drahun.

dcop is not a daemon?
by Gene Heskett 13 Jun '16

13 Jun '16

Feature request: My mailwatcher script is calling dcop from the hard drive for every incoming mail, and my putting a set -x in the top of it, then watching the output trace, shows a quite large lag in its doing that. But I see no daemon launcher in /etc/init.d. It seems to me that if dcop were a memory resident process like dbus is, the HD would be spared that that access, and the response time would be 2% of what it is now. If this version of kmail in R14.0.4 can use a dbus feed too, that problem is solved by my changing one var in the top of my script. Does anyone know? I ask because if I switch it, and it doesn't work, the dbus buffer gets stuffed and it takes a reboot to fix that, a dbus restart doesn't seem to re-init it. BTDT, several times. Thanks. I just lost 2 copies of an email that was a hair north of 15 megabytes
by Gene Heskett 10 Jun '16

10 Jun '16

Greetings all; fetchmail's log shows it was pulled from both email servers I used. Handed off to procmail for delivery, it apparently was silently /dev/nulled by procmail. The only size limits in .procmailrc have to do with taking a maximum hit on spamassassin's kids. In the order in which its executed, this is the catcher recipe, which has worked for quite a bit of a decade now, and worked a couple days ago for a smaller picture: :0 *.*lrcrispy\(a)frontiernet\.net /var/spool/mail/gene And the only size limits are below that where it calls the spam checking: :0 * ^X-Spam-Status: { :0 fw | formail -R "X-Spam-Status:" "X-False-Spam-Status:" :0 fw | formail -A "X-Nasty: Aren't we?" } :0 * ^X-Spam-Level: { :0 fw | formail -R "X-Spam-Level" "X-False-Spam-Level" } :0 * ^X-Spam-Checker-Version: { :0 fw | formail -R "X-Spam-Checker-Version:" "X-False-Spam-Checker-Version:" } ############################################################################## # Rewrite Reply-To: for SpamAssassin users list ############################################################################## :0 * < 500000 * !^List-Id: .*(spamassassin\.apache.\org) { :0 fw: spamassassin.lock | /usr/bin/spamc -t 140 -u gene -d 127.0.0.1 } # Sometimes SpamAssassin fails to run. This forces the issue. :0 w * !^X-Spam-Checker-Version: * < 500000 * !^List-Id: .*(spamassassin\.apache\.org) * !^From: .FETCHMAIL-DAEMON@ { :0 fw: spamassassinFailed.lock | nice -n 1 /usr/bin/spamassassin } I am thinking I need a catcher below all his that puts anything that still exists in /var/spool/mail/gene so I can manually dispose of it? Is that how the rest of you are thinking, that there is no save option if it falls all the way thru to the last recipe above? It gets handed off to procmail as the MTA, and procmail normally logs the size, but there's nothing in that size category in the procmail.log. Leading me to think it fell all the way thru for some unk reason. Comments plz. Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. qdbus vs kmail ??
by Gene Heskett 09 Jun '16

09 Jun '16

Greetings to the tde-r14.0.4 kmail experts; One of the things that is rather glaringly not addressed in the docs on kmail that are easily read from a click on the help pulldown, is any info on how to control kmails functioning via dbus commands. I've been using dbus to send it a get new mail cmd for years, using a command line someone gave me: /usr/bin/qdbus org.kde.kmail /KMail org.kde.kmail.kmail.checkMail but since my sa-learn scripts also reach into kmail's database and move files once sa-learn (-ham or -spam) has done its thing, it would be easier on kmails sanity if I could send it a rebuild index command on the two directory's mucked with. man qdbus looks helpfull, but says that org.kde.kmail does not exist when I attempt to query it using the above command or variations of it. I would assume that $>/usr/bin/qdbus org.kde.kmail /KMail would return a whats available list, but doesn't. All I can get is: gene@coyote:~$ qdbus -service org.kde.kmail /KMail Service 'org.kde.kmail' does not exist. gene@coyote:~$ qdbus org.kde.kmail /KMail Service 'org.kde.kmail' does not exist. gene@coyote:~$ qdbus org.kde.kmail Service 'org.kde.kmail' does not exist. And yet the first sample command above works and has been working since dcop was deprecated somewhere back up the timeline quite a few years ago. Is there such a doc someplace? Or am I miss-reading the qdbus man page. A simple qdbus[enter] returns only this: gene@coyote:~$ qdbus :1.0 org.kde.kcalc-6112 :1.1 org.xfce.Terminal4 :1.2 :1.3 org.gtk.vfs.Daemon :1.4 :1.6 org.freedesktop.DBus And yet a command sent to org.kde.kmail works a treat. So how is that command getting there, because it works, and has been working for years. Me goes off to Wallies to get some scripts that keep me tuned up as well as can be expected considering the accumulated mileage. Switching layouts with keys and a couple of other questions
by J. Drahun 09 Jun '16

09 Jun '16

Hi all! I've switched to TDE not long ago, it works fine, though I experience some problems. First of all, layout switching. I set setxkbmap -option -option grp:ctrl_shift_toggle in the Xkb options tab, but this feature doesn't seem to work, CTRL+Shift does nothing with layouts. Second, is there some option for TDE menu to show submenus in one column, like MS Windows did for the Start menu? My Settings submenu fills the entire screen and I don't know what to do. Third, is it possible to close windows by double-clicking the icon in the upper left corner? I don't find such an option. Best wishes, J. Drahun.

by phiebie＠tele2.at 05 Jun '16

Konsole is started as normal user. In it is invoked the midnight-commander. Keyboard-navigation and -keypresses are flawlessly executed. The mouse-cursor moves if desired all over the screen. Clicking *outside* the console starts the envisaged action on other files, but *inside* the mc-konsole nothing happens at all when clicking. gpm, konsole and mc all 3 are [ root:root 100755 ]. When I however start the console, then su to root and invoke mc everything works properly! Where else should/could I look for the apparently missing user-permissions? Thanks.

[trinity-users] sound in stretch on HDMI only works in VLC, analog only elsewhere
by Felix Miata 19 May '16

19 May '16

Via manual selection in VLC, which offers about 20+ devices to choose from, sound via HDMI works. However, system sounds and Youtube in FF only work via the analog pin jack. TDE control center makes no HDMI device offering. Anyone here know the secret to making HDMI default sound source everywhere? Each of the following in /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf had no effect: options snd_hda_intel index=0,1 options snd_hda_intel index=1,0 options snd index=0 options snd index=1 options snd_hda_intel index=0 options snd_hda_intel index=1 In a similar vein, instructions on http://superuser.com/questions/626606/how-to-make-alsa-pick-a-preferred-sou… either kept analog sound working, but killed HDMI/VLC sound, or had no apparent effect. Instructions on http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/HDA_Analyzer various fail as user. As root, sound doesn't work at all. Shift+arrow in Konsole
by Jan Stolarek 19 May '16

19 May '16

Hi all, recently I encountere a problem with using Konsole. For some reason using Shift+<arrow key> stopped working in Emacs. At first I thought Emacs is at fault but a quick investigation revealed that using Shift+<arrow> simply does not work in Konsole. With google's help I found a solution [1], which was to edit keytab file found in /opt/trinity/share/apps/konsole/. An interesting fact is that I found five files in that directory, but on my system Konsole is using a key set named "XFree (4.x.x)" and that set is not found in the above directory. I scanned the whole disk for files ending with *keytab but found only these five files in konsole directory. Does anyone know where is the definition of "XFree (4.x.x)" key set? I'd like to fix the problem by editing that set but for now I have edited a set named "XFree (3.x.x)" Janek [1]https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59256 --- Politechnika Łódzka Lodz University of Technology Treść tej wiadomości zawiera informacje przeznaczone tylko dla adresata. Firefox build
by Peter Laws 12 May '16

12 May '16

I've been unhappy with the default Ubuntu build of firefox for a long time. I thought I'd try building it from source but it's apparently been a long time since untar; ./configure; make; make install was a thing. With one of the recent updates, the window decorations changed, too, and I find the new style dialogs annoying (I have no idea if it was a Firefox patch or a TDE patch that changed something). I also get Asian characters, perhaps Chinese, when I copy something from the TDE side of my environment across Synergy and paste it to my Macbook, but ignore that foolishness for now. So I've installed mercurial and I've installed autoconf-2.13 (because past that, autoconf is too cool for school and isn't actually backwards compatible with stuff real projects used) and now I've hit gtk+. plaws@toto3:mozilla-central $ sudo apt-get install gtk+ Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package gtk Any combination of quotes doesn't seem to sufficiently protect that +. Looking at what's available in the repo with Adept, I don't actually see a specific package for gtk+ only gtk2 and gtk3, though I admit that I have no idea how those are related (look, if it were up to me, I'd still use OLVWM ...). So what's the 1) easiest way for me to satisfy the demands of the build script that 2) doesn't completely dork up my Trinity installation? I may not need to install anything - this may be just a path or ENV thing. Any help appreciated! 0:07.85 checking for gtk+-3.0 >= 3.4.0 gtk+-unix-print-3.0 glib-2.0 gobject-2.0 ... KPowersave stopped working
by Jan Stolarek 11 May '16

11 May '16

Hi all, I have TDE 3.5.13.2 installed on Debian 7.10. Some time ago (probably after one of security updates) my KPowerSave stopped working - it does not allow me to set power scheme nor does it recognize whether the laptop is running on battery or A/C. These features still work in other programs (eg. htop recognizes whether I am running on battery or A/C, I can use cpufreq-set to set CPU speed) so this is not a system-wide breakage. Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong? Janek --- Politechnika Łódzka Lodz University of Technology Treść tej wiadomości zawiera informacje przeznaczone tylko dla adresata. Yeah, I have a hard time with anything Google these days (scary behemoth), but I've come to prefer Chromium over Iceweasel and haven't found anything else that works reliably (though it has been a while since I've used Opera). > In time I'm sure webkit or the like can be added to konq returning it > to a great web browser as well. Patience in the key here. I wish I had your optimism, I'm really amazed how little traction TDE has, even more so Konqueror - thanks in part to the Dolphin over Konqueror boondoggle. I don't know the current state, but the Konqueror webkit engine (option in KDE4?) wasn't reliably better. In any case, it's a welcome surprise to hear that someone else still finds Konqueror indispensable.

Plans on updating Konqueror?
by Paul 03 May '16

Hi, I recently downloaded and installed TDE on Ubuntu, and so far I'm liking the environment alot. I like how all the applications are integrated with each other. However, I am having issues with the Konqueror web browser, where many websites are not rendering properly. I have looked up the issue and found that the KHTML engine that is used by Konqueror has not been updated for some time and is behind the rendering errors. I have installed both Firefox and Chromium but none of them integrate well as Konqueror does. On websites that work with Konqueror, I like the fact when I click on a video link, a picture, a file archive, a sound file, or any other type of file, it automatically opens up in the corresponding application and the program, Kaffine for example, starts streaming the video file. I cannot get the same kind of integration with Firefox or Chromium. I have tried setting the default RSS subscription program to Akregator, but it doesn't seem to redirect the request to that program. I have tried having video files open up in Kaffine, but the browser downloads the whole video first instead of opening up Kaffine and streaming it. One other minor complaint I have is that the interfaces don't match well with TDE either, as there doesn't seem to be a lot of QT based browsers that have up-to-date browser engines. I was wondering if there are any plans on updating the KTML engine or Konqueror in general to work with modern websites and to have that great intergratedness that makes me like Konqueror. I would have been happy to work on this project myself but as I don't know how to code at all, this isn't a pheasble route for me. Thanks for any info you may give, Paul

Almost everything I do on my PC is done using Konqueror as a navigator to view/play/edit/run files/programs, local and remote - things no other web browser or file manager can do. While Konqueror is essentially my desktop and could get me anyhere I want/need to go, sometimes the menu or taskbar are faster/easier. That said, it is frustrating that I can only use Konqueror to view websites I know it can handle. I still use Konqueror as a gateway browser ('open with Chromium') because there are enough of my regular sites that still work in Konqueror and I prefer the simpler/depreciated Google interface. Maybe I'm stubborn, but Iceweasel and Chromium are pigs and not something to leave running when you're using a Pi2 PC. ...It's probably a pipe dream, but it would be real nice if there were a way that I could have a whitelist of sites that would open in Konqueror with all others automatically opening in an external browser.
