Autostart nm-applet blocked in TDE
by Darrell Anderson 20 Apr '25

20 Apr '25

I don't travel much with my laptop so my home network connection remains more or less static. Nonetheless I have noticed for some time that the nm-applet does not appear in my system tray. Manually launching nm-applet succeeds and the icon appears in the tray. Eventually I traced the problem to the desktop file: NotShowIn=KDE;GNOME; Removing the 'KDE' directive allows nm-applet to launch in TDE. The problem with that is KDE has its own NetworkManager front-end and nm-applet is not needed. So the KDE directive is needed. The mystery is why is TDE interpreting 'KDE' to mean 'TDE'? This seems like a bug but perhaps there is an explanation I am not seeing. I found a list discussion from about 10 years ago that seemed similar. In that discussion nm-applet was launching but the icon was not displaying correctly. In my case nm-applet is not launching unless I remove the 'KDE' directive from the desktop file. I know about tdenetworkmanager. Not important to this discussion. I first want to understand why TDE is incorrectly interpreting 'KDE' as 'TDE' or acting as though TDE is KDE. Thanks.

Odd delay logging out
by Darrell Anderson 20 Apr '25

20 Apr '25

I can't put my finger on anything. About a third of the time when I log out of my TDE session there is a notable (and irritating) delay. Almost like a freeze. Nothing in the .xsession-errors log. I start TDE from the console with startx. My first guess is some process not responding. Whether that process is TDE or other I do not know. I have seen this oddball event throughout my years of using TDE. Could well be I have configured something to cause the issue. I am open to suggestions to debug. Thanks.

Spell checking
by Darrell Anderson 19 Apr '25

19 Apr '25

Kate/KWrite spell checking leaves a bit to be desired. I'm noticing misspelled words not being flagged. Spell checking in TDE is configured in KControl, but I am guessing the real issue is the underlying spelling engine. I found a previous thread discussing the issue. Anybody like to share their spell checking strategy? Thanks.

System tray placement order
by Darrell Anderson 18 Apr '25

18 Apr '25

Are there tricks to getting system tray icons placed in a desired order? I am guessing the order is controlled by a "first come first show" placement and the order in which the tools are launched. I presume launching any TDE or user autostart files are done alphabetically. I have two very similar user accounts for two computers. On one system the system tray placement order of Klipper and Goldendict are reversed from the other system. I frequently use both tools. The icons nominally look similar at least with respect to colors and often I select the incorrect icon. I could configure some wrapper scripts to create a launch delay of some kind, but that seems like a sledge hammer approach. Similarly I could choose a different icon for Goldendict. Thanks.

Debian distro
by Darrell Anderson 18 Apr '25

18 Apr '25

I am creating a build script environment for Slackware. Something in the tradition of stock and SBo build scripts for those who know what that means. Debian seems overwhelmingly supported in TDE. To help me learn I want to create a Debian VM where I can download and study package sources and build scripts. One caveat is the Debian distro needs to NOT support systemd because Slackware does not. I need something reasonably close to how Slackware functions. I tried q4os but I did not like and their custom control center thingie frustrated me and gets in my way. And I want something generic with no systemd. Something straightforward. Install the ISO, configure apt sources, install TDE. Please recommend. I am guessing a plain Devuan ISO might suffice? Thank you.

Kate syntax highlighting
by Darrell Anderson 16 Apr '25

16 Apr '25

I don't know if this is a PEBKAC issue. I seem to have a devilish time getting Kate to remember syntax highlighting of previously opened files. I have Kate configured to remember meta information for 180 days. I also notice that often Kate does not guess the correct syntax highlighting for what are obvious shell scripts. The shell scripts have correct declarations at the beginning of the script. I get the feeling the detection scheme is keying off of something other than '#!/bin/sh'. What might I be doing incorrectly? Or where might I start troubleshooting? Thanks.

Sidequestion 2: How can be disabled the password asking screen, after restoring from sleep - suspend etc.? TIA!!! :-) G.

TDE 14.1.3 32-bit on Single Core Computers
by Darrell Anderson 14 Apr '25

14 Apr '25

I like to tinker some with vintage computers. Kind of fascinating. I am able to use much of TDE on single core computers (compiled in a 32-bit VM on a 4-core system :-)). The systems are running Slackware 14.1 32-bit with Seagate Barracuda IV spinners. One system has 256 MB RAM, the other 448 MB. As might be expected booting takes time but once that completes can TDE be used? With nominal patience, yes. Even with 10/100 Mbs NICs, Konqueror is responsive traversing network directories. The spinners are a bottleneck but TDE is usable. RAM usage after logging in (console/startx) and letting everything settle: 256 MB RAM: console: 14 MB; TDE: 239 MB 0 MB swap 448 MB RAM: console: 15 MB; TDE: 292 MB 0 MB swap This is with Konqueror preloaded in the configs, minimal system daemons, etc. Further usage eventually sees swap get used because of the limited RAM. Before anybody chuckles too hard, back in the KDE 3.5.x days these systems were my daily drivers. Mostly with Windows NT4 but dual booting into Slackware and 3.5.x. Likely some responsiveness could be squeezed by using older Slackware releases matching the hardware of 20 years ago. Use as a daily driver? Probably not. :-) That I can attempt this let alone actually succeed is nonetheless remarkable. As a proof-of-concept test I think this is a fine testament to how TDE is designed and maintained. Just nice to see this work. Big smile!

Cursor movement after searching text
by Darrell Anderson 13 Apr '25

13 Apr '25

Is there a way to configure katepart to provide a more "intelligent" cursor movement after searching text? I do not see anything relevant in the Cursor & Selection Behavior configuration. 1. In kate or kwrite invoke a normal search/find. 2. Close the Find dialog. 3. Notice the text is highlighted. 4. Press the keyboard left or right arrow navigation key. When pressing the left key, my expectation is the cursor should move to the immediate left of the selection highlight. Instead the cursor moves to the character on the immediate left of the end of the selection. Similarly, when pressing the right arrow key the cursor moves to the next character to the right rather than just end the selection highlight and keep the cursor at the same place. My expectation is the cursor movement I have seen in other text editors. Thanks. :)

Kate KTextEditor Incremental Search Plugin
by Darrell Anderson 12 Apr '25

12 Apr '25

There is a collection of Kate plugins in the tdeaddons package. One of the plugins is called KTextEditor Incremental Search Plugin. I am scratching my head how to use the plugin. The respective plugin Comment shows Also known as "As you type search". If I start typing I simply add text to my document. If I invoke the Find dialog nothing happens unless I press the Find button, just like normal search. The Kate Plugins Handbook does not include the plugins from the tdeaddons package. So -- how to use the plugin? And second, is this information cleverly hidden in a handbook? Thanks. :)

TDE Benchmarks
by Darrell Anderson 10 Apr '25

10 Apr '25

This might be a controversial topic and might bring the wallflowers out screaming with high opinions, but has anybody tried to run meaningful benchmarks with TDE? I'm not talking about click-bait or hardware benchmarks. More like how snappy TDE actually is. Another benchmark is energy consumption. Both types of benchmarks probably need several days of data collection to be meaningful. Data that is collected with more than 10 minutes in a virtual machine and an author bio photo wearing sunglasses. I tinker with vintage computers. Earlier today I installed TDE 14.1.3 on some dual core clunkers with SATA II spinners. I do not expect spinners to impress anybody these days, let alone SATA II, but the desktop is way snappier than I was expecting. No hanging or stuttering. The most important benchmark is solitaire (KPatience) runs nicely. With these observations, I realized could survive for a while with these computers if my main rig bit the dust. (I am going to test TDE on some single core systems too. :-)) I am not much surprised TDE runs well on these systems. After all, KDE 3.5.10 was released in the same time period these computers were sold. With these spinners Konqueror responds nicely, even with network shares. And that raises a different topic to enjoy favorite beverages -- why are most GUI file managers/explorers so slow compared to Konqueror? Kudos to the devs, past and present. Yesterday I was doing some oddball testing of the dual batteries on my T580 laptop. Although the laptop was idle much of the day, I noticed overall energy consumption was low. I never really looked at that before with other desktop environments, but the trivia got me thinking. Is TDE more energy efficient than other modern desktops? Is that even measurable? So let the vampires and werewolves loose. I am not looking for mere confirmation bias slaps on the back. Let me know if you have some ideas how to test TDE in a meaningful manner. Yes, all things considered, nobody really gives a hoot. Just use whatever tickles your fancy. If you can't tell, I am going a bit stir crazy. Spring just refuses to come this year. :-(

Scrollbar width redux
by Darrell Anderson 10 Apr '25

10 Apr '25

With respect to scroll bar widths, I'm looking for documentation and ideas how this design element functions. Except for Keramic, seems the built-in widget styles from tdebase mostly are inflexible except for common elements. Those common elements are the check boxes below the KControl Widget Style drop-down control. The challenge is I am the square peg in a world of round holes. Nothing new there, been walking through my life like that for many decades. I much like the simplicity of the TDE Classic widget style. To many people that style is boring, but I prefer boring in my desktop environment. I like the raised button look. I don't much like any other style. Not into fancy sheen, gloss, flatness, and all that. And my eyes scream at anything resembling a full dark theme. I almost get violent every time I visit a web site designed with dark themes. That crap hurts my eyes. I don't know how much effort is involved to get a scroll bar width control into TDE Classic. Probably too much. I'm guessing I need to create my own theme style, using one of the widget styles already supporting scroll width controls such as Lipstik, QtCurve, or Polyester. From there try to tweak the look-and-feel and raised buttons like TDE Classic. I don't have every single theme package installed. Perhaps there are more supporting scroll bar widths and raised buttons. Let the hounds loose. Share your thoughts. :) Thanks.

Error with QtCurve style
by Darrell Anderson 10 Apr '25

10 Apr '25

TDE 14.1.3, Slackware 15.0 64-bit. I built the QtCurve style theme. When I select the KControl Configure dialog I receive the following error: KLibrary: /opt/trinity/lib64/trinity/tdestyle_qtcurve_config.so: undefined symbol: allocate_tdestyle_config tdestyle_qtcurve_config allocate_tdestyle_config My limited understanding of C++ is the error implies something not declared or defined correctly in the sources. I presume the package functions correctly for you Debian folks, which implies some kind of adjustment or patch needed in Slackware. Help appreciated. Thank you.

Does KBookReader actually work? Or am I demonstrating Yet Another PEBKAC issue? The tool loads fine but when I open an epub all I get is gobbledygook. There is no handbook. Before any Horshacks respond, yes I tried TDE Ebook Reader ported from FBReader. Kind of user hostile with the non standard interface. The design seems to presume a user has create some kind of library. The formatting is less than pleasing. Installing both packages creates no epub file associations. Odd.

R14.1.3 and polkit?
by Darrell Anderson 01 Apr '25

01 Apr '25

I updated my system from 14.1.2 to 14.1.3. I no longer could launch tools as root using pkexec. Testing in the command line indicates some kind of polkit issue. Found some related discussion on the web but as usual, little help. I tested the same in KDE and had no problems. I noticed in KDE there is a polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1 process running. No such process in TDE, but I don't recall anything like that in previous versions of TDE. Kind of implies something in 14.1.3 changed to expect a polkit agent. On a whim I created a $TDEHOME/Autostart desktop file to launch the KDE polkit agent. I then could again launch tools as root with pkexec. I am going to presume I missed the memo somewhere. Did something related change in 14.1.3? The wiki seemed to imply there now is a TDE polkit agent but there is no such package here. Thanks.

Using tdepowersave
by Darrell Anderson 01 Apr '25

01 Apr '25

I installed tdepowersave. Clicking the system tray icon pops open a display dialog that does not fit the laptop screen. The 15 inch 1920x1080 screen resolution is not the problem -- the dialog is too long vertically to fit the screen. Try as I might I could not resize the dialog and the dialog has no scroll bar. The design of this dialog seems untested because many if not a majority of laptop screens are 14 inch -- some even smaller. As with most things I accept my own ignorance and naivety might be to blame. Nonetheless I get the feeling this dialog was designed on a large laptop -- no scroll bar? Or perhaps was tested only on a dual core laptop. (There are other dialogs like this, such as in KControl, that are not resizable and don't fit on a laptop screen) One issue here is the laptop CPU is 4-core, but 8 threads. The dialog code (actually the kernel code) interprets this as 8 cores. While CPU usage is interesting, I think the information is superfluous to energy saving. Most people, at least me, are concerned only with the batteries. * Is there a way to resize this dialog? I tried clicking the title bar, using Move and Resize to no avail. * Is there a way to remove the CPU usage information? Nice info but not needed here. * Is there a way to configure tdepowersave not to automatically start when there is no battery? The user account I use on my laptop is synced to my office desktop where there are no batteries and no real concern with energy usage. Not too get carried away. Seems to be a decent tool but as often is the case, I seem to be a user outside the expected usage bell curve. Thanks.

Klipper does not activate most recent selection
by Darrell Anderson 30 Mar '25

30 Mar '25

When I copy text the data is pulled into Klipper. Klipper does not activate that selection. I always have to pop open the Klipper menu and manually select that recent selection copy. I have tried keeping the two different buffers in sync and not. When I manually select the most recent selection from the popup menu, Klipper pastes the selection as expected. The next time I copy a different selection Klipper again "forgets" which selection is most recent. My usage of any clipboard manager is the most recent selection is always remembered and activated as selected for pasting. Klipper is not doing this. I do not remember Klipper behaving this way in the past. I do not see anything awry in klipperrc. Has something changed with Klipper behavior? Thanks.

Akregator
by Darrell Anderson 25 Mar '25

25 Mar '25

For some years I have been using the QuiteRss feed reader. I am testing Akregator with some hope of migrating. I do not want or need any related cookie storage. When I launch Akregator, $TDEHOME/share/apps/kcookiejar/cookies is created. Can cookies be fully disabled? Or is creating the cookie jar a coding artifact of calling tdelibs kcookiejar but Akregator does not actually store cookies? I can't find the word cookie anywhere in Akregator code but that might be a function that lies in the khtml backend rather than Akregator. The internal browser seems broken? All of the pages opened in an Akregator tab are void of any style sheet or page formatting. Is something needed to be configured in Konqueror? When deleting a feed from the list, the respective feeds.opml entry is deleted but the Archive mk4 is not. A bug? Probably not a bug but an oddity. When Akregator loads the default feeds on first launch, the TDE feeds include feeds from 2010 (3.5.13 is launched)? Probably fixable if the upstream feed is updated/edited? Thanks.

More Akregator observations
by Darrell Anderson 25 Mar '25

25 Mar '25

* When launching there is no focus anywhere. I have to always manually select 'All Feeds'. I would prefer the focus be 'All Feeds' so I can start browsing the Article pane. * When closing Akregator I don't see a way to delete all feeds I have read. Upon the next launch all of the previous feeds remain in the Article pane. * Seems I have to manually delete all read feeds in the Article pane, but that requires several mouse clicks and scrolling to select all read feeds and manually delete. * There is no shortcut I can find to select all feeds in the Article pane. I tried what I thought was an intuitive Ctrl+A and nothing happened. I found no related shortcut when browsing the Shortcuts dialog. "Right-clicking" in the Article pane does not provide any 'Select All' option.

[off topic] sorry

24 Mar '25

Hello, Sorry for this off topic. I'am under Debian Bookworm, processor Intel 64 bits AMD 64. My graphic card is a Nvidia (nvidia-detect) : "NVIDIA Corporation GK208B [GeForce GT 710] (rev a1) Your card is supported by the "Tesla 470 drivers" series. It is recommended to install the nvidia-tesla-470-driver". Until the kernel linux-headers-6.1.0-31-amd64 & linux-image-6.1.0-31-amd64, evrything worked perfectly. The transition to kernel 6.1.0-32 went badly after an "apt upgrade" or apt install linux-headers-6.1.0-32-amd64 & linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64 : ================ "Errors were encountered while processing: linux-headers-6.1.0-32-amd64 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)". ================ Now, the NVIDIA driver no longer works and many bugs appears. These two commands do not resolve anything : # dpkg --configure -a # apt-get install -f Of course tde-trinity is not responsible. If you have an idea, that would help me enormously Thanks in advance. Cheers, André

konqueror sidebar new behaviour since 14.1.3?
by Rody 24 Mar '25

24 Mar '25

One can hide the konqueror sidebar by dragging the sidebar to the left border and/or by pressing F9. In previous versions prior to 14.1.3 the sidebar would remain hidden for new konqueror windows after doing this. However, this behaviour seems to have changed in 14.1.3. The sidebar now returns in new konqueror windows and there seems to be no way to keep it hidden? Rody

Printing font sizes
by Darrell Anderson 22 Mar '25

22 Mar '25

Since starting my damn-the-torpedoes-full-speed-ahead journey the past few weeks to solely use TDE, I found the need today to print a simple one-page text file. Since using KDE Kate for the past some years I had to always temporarily change the font size from old eyes on-screen 20 point to 12 point for printing, then restore the font size for old eyes on-screen viewing. A nuisance to some degree. For my current print task I began to do likewise with TDE Kate. I ran into some nuisance issues. There is no Print Preview menu option like in KDE Kate. I looked in the TDE Katepart toolbar config dialog. There is an option to add a Print button to the toolbar but not for Print Preview. Instead there is a Preview check box in the Print dialog. Curiouser and curiouser. The Print Preview dialog opened to an annoying half screen window. I want to preview the entire document, not the upper one-third. A one-click solution using the window sizing widgets to change the window to full screen, but not permanent. I ended up creating a special window rule to open the Print Preview dialog full screen. Search as I might, configuring the Print Preview window to default to full screen without the rule escapes me. Okay, I found a solution, but there must be a way to do this without a rule, right? I proceeded to exercise my cursing skills because despite having changed my old eyes on-screen font size to 12 point, the Print Preview kept showing the font size as my original 20 point selection for on-screen, forcing the short document into two pages. Then the cobwebs flushed. I remembered TDE Kate has different font schemas, including one for printing. Ah yes, now I remember. I might have changed the old eyes on-screen font size, but the Print schema remained the same 20 points. I modified the Print schema to 12 point and the Print Preview looked great. A one page document. Then I restored the old eyes on-screen font size to 20 point. That got me searching the web for why KDE Kate does not do this. Same roots and heritage, right? I don't know. A rabbit hole. Looks like the font schema feature was removed or moved somewhere that only geeks would know where to look. Or I am blind and stupid. In the end I thought, yes, a fine feature to have different font schemas. Screens and printers are different. Nice to know that within TDE Kate I do not have to temporarily modify the old eyes on-screen font size when printing. Convenient. And unlike KDE Kate, TDE Kate launches almost instantaneously. Chalk up a few points for TDE. Rub my belly and watch my leg jiggle.

Window borders
by Darrell Anderson 19 Mar '25

19 Mar '25

Is there a way to not have borders around windows? Or at least the side vertical borders? I am using TDE Classic Style. When I am reading an online article in a web browser, often I "fling" the mouse pointer to the left edge of the screen to keep the pointer out of the way of reading text. I use the mouse scroll wheel to move down the page. With TDE I can't do that because when the pointer hovers over that left edge window border the effect is to kill scrolling. I have to continually bump the mouse pointer to the right to get off the border. I do not experience this in other desktop environments. Memory muscle and habits are difficult to change. So I am thinking this is a property of twin. Thanks. DA

Rather than a new tab the first PDF document was closed in order to open the second PDF. Seems the only way to have multiple PDFs open is launch externally from Konqueror? Or use a different PDF viewer?

I want to see the year in the Modified column date stamp. I change the Short date format to SHORTWEEKDAY SHORTMONTH dD YYYY and then the Modified column dates look the way I want to include the year. But the clock format changes too: 2:58 pm Thu Mar 13 2025 Not the end of the world, but is there a hidden way to control each format separately? Thanks.

Konqueror file manager blank new tab
by Darrell Anderson 15 Mar '25

15 Mar '25

I only use konqueror with the file management profile. When I open a new tab the file pane contents are always empty -- blank. Is a empty/blank page normal or do I have something misconfigured? I am guessing the blank page is a carry over from web browsing. The only related configuration I could find is Behavior->Home URL, which I have configured to $HOME (actual file path and not env. variable). I would think that one way or another a new tab would list the contents of that path. I use Tree View all the time. getting Logitech USB microphone to work with Audacity (or better solution) - off-topic
by William Morder 08 Mar '25

08 Mar '25

Okay, so here's another off-topic conumdrum for the more technically-inclined musicians and sound people out there. I found a Logitech USB microphone at a second-hand shop for cheap ($5), and want to get it working with my machine, so that I can do quick and dirty recordings of demos or just for my own practice. My machine does recognize the microphone, no problem. (I always seem to have good luck with Logitech products.) I used alsamixer, hit the F6 key, chose Logitech USB microphone, and there it is. I did not have Audacity installed, though I have used it a lot, when I have a much more complete mixing setup, sometimes with multiple instruments and microphones attached. Again, no problem. I've made many recordings using Audacity with different guitars and microphones. Now, however, while my machine recognizes the microphone, Audacity will not start up at all. I installed it from the repositories, everything seems right. When I run F2 and enter audacity, the logo shows up. But when I check top, it never appears at all, as if something is blocking Audacity from starting up. I checked what I could of config files, etc., but nothing seems amiss. I do have a backup of my system, including the folders for my previous working version of Audacity, so it's possible that I could solve my problem by just copying the old folder into my new folder, and overwrite everything so that my settings ought to be forced. But I'm wondering if anybody else might have a clue what's going on, before I go rogue and do something stupid. Also, over the past couple years I've been reading various complaints about the new "privacy" policies of Audacity: that it now snoops on users, even when it's not running, if it's installed on a system. I would like to find a better fork that respects our privacy, but so far I have found nothing to compare with it in GNU/Linux programs. Thanks for any help. Bill

skype only with SNAP (off-topic)

Dear TDE users, I understand this may be off-topic. I was trying to update skype on my openSUSE Leap 15.4 installation (I know this is no longer officially supported), but I discovered that skype is no longer provided as RPM, but only as SNAP. I have never used SNAP. Can SNAP and RPM coexist in openSUSE Leap? Is that going to create conflicts? Is there a way to extract files from the SNAP archive? All I see on the skype website is a button that says "Install" but not sure whether that installs directly or first downloads a file? Thanks! While searching for mail that had been sent to me in the last day but I had not received, I discovered that my email provider's spam filters had "helpfully" moved 231 pieces of mail into its spam folder. (There was one actual piece of spam.) After downloading the mail, some of the pieces could not be opened (clicking on them has no effect). Workaround: KPDF asks for password on some PDFs
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 21 Feb '25

21 Feb '25

Hi all! This Workaround is for all that are plaged by kpdf not able to open encrypted PDFs. - It decrypts PDFs with the infamouse empty password (that failes on libpoppler) - It asks for the password for encrypted PDFs and removes the encryption (if password is correct) How to use: - Save the attached program to your ~/bin (or wherever you would like it to reside) - Change the file association for PDF to use this program - Open some encrypted/not-encrypted PDFs that did not work in plain kpdf. Commandline: "/where/ever/you/put/it/decrypt-pdf" PDF.pdf ... TDE specific file URLS like sftp:// don't work, but maybe "somebody" feels the need to add those. --> KPDF can now handle all PDFs that it could not cope with. Enjoy. Trinity and AI
by Marvin Jones 12 Feb '25

12 Feb '25

For a long time I've wondered if there was a way in TDE to start a console window in a _specific_ desktop. My Black Belt In Procrastination has kept my from really pursuing the issue. :-) So, today I thought to try a Google AI search for the issue. I had low expectations, because Trinity is (sadly) not so well known or employed in the wild. So, with the 'prompt' "trinity TDE start console on specific desktop" I was gifted with this" "To start the Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) console on a specific desktop, you can use the command "kstart --desktop [desktop number] [application]" in a terminal window, where "[desktop number]" is the desired desktop number and "[application]" is the application you want to launch on that desktop; for example, "kstart --desktop 2 xterm" would open a terminal window on the second desktop. ....." There was additional text given besides the above. Whoopie! I had never learned of/about `kstart` before. But, also Whoopie! Because AI can probably help with lots of 'ordinary' Trinity issues that someone (newcomers) come up with. Jonesy

Modernizing sources?
by dep 12 Feb '25

12 Feb '25

Greets, everybody . . . Just did my regular apt update apt upgrade run (Debian Trixie) and after I'd upgraded everything, I was presented with this: [quote] Notice: Some sources can be modernized. Run 'apt modernize-sources' to do so. [/quote] I did. There was nothing particularly surprising -- to the extent I could make sense of it. I was, though, uncharacteristically careful, so: [quote] ~$ apt modernize-sources The following files need modernizing: - /etc/apt/sources.list - /etc/apt/sources.list.d/brave-browser-release.list - /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mozilla.list - /etc/apt/sources.list.d/protonvpn-stable.list Modernizing will replace .list files with the new .sources format, add Signed-By values where they can be determined automatically, and save the old files into .list.bak files. This command supports the 'signed-by' and 'trusted' options. If you have specified other options inside [] brackets, please transfer them manually to the output files; see sources.list(5) for a mapping. For a simulation, respond N in the following prompt. Rewrite 4 sources? [Y/n] n [/quote] The simulation included, among other things, this: [quote] Modernizing /etc/apt/sources.list... Warning: Could not determine Signed-By for URIs: http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-sb/, Suites: testing # Would write to: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/trinitydesktop.org.sources # Modernized from /etc/apt/sources.list Types: deb URIs: http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-sb/ Suites: testing Components: deps-r14 main-r14 Signed-By: [/quote] The various other entries in /etc/apt/sources.list did appear to be signed. I should probably know the significance of this, but I don't. More to the point, I do not want to break anything. Is there something here that Trinity ought to be including? Alternately, is it safe to ignore it, with the expectation that my Trinity updates will continue? Or should I make sure I never ever say yes to modernize-sources? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

TDE unstable with openSUSE 15.6 on old laptop
by Gianluca Interlandi 01 Feb '25

01 Feb '25

Dear TDE list, I installed openSUSE 15.6 on an old DELL Inspiron 1520. I decided to give it some more life with a Crucial MX500 2 TB SSD. The installation went fine except that I had to use "acpi=off" to boot the installation media, but I was able to remove that kernel option after the installation. LXDE runs fine. However, TDE is unstable and already during the setup wizard the screen goes blank after a few second, then comes back, goes blank again and after a few times X crashes and goes back to the login screen. With LXDE, I have a similar issue if I use a openGL application that displays atoms as spheres (other representations work fine). In that situation, the screen also flashes a few times and the application that I use crashes, but the LXDE session survives. This makes me think that it is probably related to the video card not beeing correctly supported by newer kernels. The video card is: Mesa Intel 965GM. I wonder whether anybody has any idea how to troubleshoot this, especially as everything else seems to work fine. I use this laptop to teach python and pygame to my middle school son. So LXDE will be fine for that. What I have done in the past if I'm not happy with the hardware I installed linux on, I purchase something newer on e-bay and move the hard disk to the newer system (at least Intel CPU to Intel CPU should work fine). If anybody has any experience/recommendation for an older laptop (that I could find on e-bay or similar) with an integrated Intel GPU where trinity runs in a stable manner possibly in conjunction with openSUSE 15.6, please let me know. It needs to have a SATA connection for a 2.5" SSD and it should be able to boot with BIOS or legacy BIOS as the partitions on the hard disk were created with a DOS label (not UEFI). Thanks! Did the name "Trinity" have anything to do with the Christian "holy trinity"?
by nabrious＠icloud.com 28 Jan '25

28 Jan '25

I understand that the name was picked due to the desktop being a fork of KDE 3, but even on the website -> https://www.trinitydesktop.org/about.php: "The name Trinity was chosen partly because the word means "three" and TDE was a continuation of KDE 3. TDE now is its own computer desktop environment project." It says that the name was picked only *partly* due to the word meaning three, so what was the other reason/part? Is it the Christian trinity? Also the reason I think that the desktop was named after the Christian trinity is the fact it has a first-party, pre-installed Bible study app called Bible Time "bibletime" Just really curious, hopefully someone has the full answer (preferably the founder himself lol).

Persistent KMail issue
by dep 15 Jan '25

15 Jan '25

Greets, everybody . . . I've hesitated to bring this up because I'm doing something that I think is not supported by anyone involved. But maybe I'm just missing something simple, so I thought I'd ask. I beg your forbearance, because the explanation is long. I use ProtonMail. PrnotMail offers an application-filter thing called ProtonBridge; without it one is stuck with Proton's webmail, which is a pain for many reasons, not least that it's impossible to reply to a message at the bottom. ProtonBridge is a fairly large thing that does the encryption/decryption of outgong/incoming messages respectively. Instead of having an actual address for the mail server, Bridge requires we use 127.0.0.1. and port 1143 for incoming and 1025 for outgoing. Fine so far. The Bridge was released about five years ago. I set it up and it worked just fine, allowing me to keep an email archive here on the local machine, as well as otherwise use KMail as I have for lo, these many years. Then a couple years ago things began to go pearshaped from time to time. I would receive pop-up KMail errors that KMail could not mark the message as read, couldn't write to the server. As I have mentioned before, it began to get double listings for incoming messages, the first blank. Making it maddening is that there's no consistency to it. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't, in both cases. I keep my software up to date, including TDE and ProtonBridge. I cannot point to the exact time it began. At about the same time, everytime I opened KMail I couldn't do anything until it downloaded every message I had receiced since forever. I normally read and respond to messages, then move them to the appropriate ones among a miltitude of maildir directories I keep here, and for the longest time that was the end of it, but there was a change that caused those messages to be downloaded anew the next time I started KMail. In that only Thunderbird is supported in Linux by ProtonBridge, I just lived with it. Then, relatively recently, KMail began to crash. I've filed the occasional KMail crash report -- btw, the crash report server needs to renew its certificate. The crashes typically happen when KMail is running minimized, which I customarily do so I don't have to d/l every email since Genesis every time I use it. I suspect it's some configuration thing with KMail that I have wrong -- not that much to configure with the Bridge -- possibly a permissions issue or something. What makes it all the more maddening is that it works most of the time. When a few days ago KMail threw the error that it couldn't write to te server, I sent the report to Proton. As usual, they replied promptly. As usual, the reply wasn't of much help, to wit: "Currently, we are testing Bridge on Outlook, Apple Mail, and Thunderbird. Other clients should also be compatible but we cannot guarantee that all of the features will work properly, as this largely depends on the implementation of the IMAP and SMTP protocols in that client. "You read about this in detail on the link below: https://proton.me/support/clients-supported-bridge " I'd really like to sort this out, but I do not know enough about mail handling to know even where to begin to look. I renamed my top-level mail directory (~/Mail, created when I was using KDE-1.0 and with messages going back that far) and letting it start anew, but there was no improvement. I shall continue to use ProtonMail and would very much like to continuing to use KMail-Trinity. But I kinda hate this. Anybody know the solution? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

The sound mess, etc.
by dep 10 Jan '25

10 Jan '25

Greetings, everybody, and happy 2025 even though the start to the year does not seem promising in many places. Digging through issues one by one here. Am using the desktop more after having gotten a TKL (SSK in IBM parlance) Model M from Unicomp. I have a couple of genuine IBM SSKs, but they have become to valuable to use. The Unicomp reissue is if anything better, and I love it. But I digress. I'm running Debian Trixie and TDE-almost-ready (I don't remember what TDE testing is called, but I'm running the not-bleeding-edge testing version, the middle one). I've discovered that sound doesn't work on my machine. I imagine that this comes down to Pipewire, the Wayland of sound. (No, I do not use Wayland. Playing pioneer in Linux was a hoot 25 years ago; now I just want the damn machine to work.) When setting up a couple of Rspberry Pi5s as television sets last year, I got no sound until I nuked Pipewire entirely, which I haven't done here on the desktop yet. KMix seems in order. I have gone everywhere I could find to set the audio to the built-in audio -- the system seems desperate to give me HDMI audio, but I have no HDMI audio. At the moment, I have no audio of any sort, but at least I have the hardware for non-HDMI audio. pulseaudio -v renders this: I: [pulseaudio] main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted I: [pulseaudio] main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Operation not permitted I: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Successfully gained nice level -11. Tofu boxes appearing in some applications - Q4OS
by padota1663＠mail.com 24 Dec '24

24 Dec '24

Hi everyone, I'm on Q4OS (Debian-based) with Trinity Desktop, and as per title, I have a weird issue since I started using Q4OS back in May, and I still haven't been able to solve it: in some (not all) applications, instead of some kind of characters (more specifically, emojis and italics) tofu boxes appear, and I already installed fonts-noto with all its dependencies. I opened this thread in the Q4OS Support Forum: https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=27828#p27828 and they told me it's a Trinity related bug, as it also happens on a pure Debian fresh install with TDE. How can it be solved? TIA

Thanks, and a question
by dep 19 Dec '24

19 Dec '24

First, thanks everybody for seeing me through the boot crisis. It does seem to have been the bios settings. Boots reliably now. As to the unattended shutdown, still don't know. It hasn't happened since. We'll see. Second, I've been fiddling with keyboards -- almost got a *new* Model F, but got and am happy with the improved Unicomp Mini Model F. (Details here for anyone who is interested: https://ofb.biz/safari/article/1272.html ) It has Windows keys -- the nice people at Unicomp are sending me blank replacements. I thought that TDE had a native keyboard remapper. I see that Grome does, in their little trick utilities package. There's also something called "Input Remapper." But I'd just as soon remain consistent if possible. The KControl keyboard setting seems to offer only whether the numlock is on. So, is there a TDE keyboard mapping utility? If not, anyone have any experience with something else? (Not counting the commandline. I like it, but not in this case.) Thanks! -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Recommendation for a distro
by Steven D'Aprano 18 Dec '24

18 Dec '24

My regular desktop died, and I have to purchase a new one. I will be getting an ASUS Mini PC PN41, which is a rebranded Intel NUC: - Intel Celeron N4500 - 4GB RAM - 128GB SSD Which distro should I use in order to install TDE? Requirements: - Keep it simple. I can use commandline tools but prefer not to have to. - I would prefer to avoid systemd based systems. My experience with systemd is that it really struggles to perform on low-powered fanless mini PCs like the Intel NUC boxes. Looking at the list here https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Category:Documentation#Installing_from_a_Pa… I *think* that Devuan is the only officially supported distro that is systemd-less. Is this correct? Would anyone like to comment or make any other suggestions, before I go ahead with a Devuan install? Thanks in advance, Steve

I broke it and I don't know how
by dep 17 Dec '24

17 Dec '24

Greetings, one and all. Not even remotely a TDE problem, but you lot are known to throw a float to a drowning man even if he fell off some other boat. System is an Asus vanilla AMD-64 running Debian Trixie and TDE Testing. Was running fine, long uptimes. Got up yesterday to an exploded reboot, so something had taken place during the night. Did a power-off reboot. Now it booted to the point of /dev/sda1 clean. Tried a reboot from grub using linux advanced mode. Once I got it to boot all the way in rescue mode. Fiddled around, found nothing wrong, rebooted. That's the last time I saw TDE. Poking around, I saw a case similar to mine in which it was suggested that the bios needed upgrading. I looked, and the date on my bios was in 2013, leading ne to think it was possible that this was true, even though I'd changed nothing since it had been booting just fine. So on another machine I d/led the latest bios file and flashed it. Which of course wiped all my settings because bioses seem to be dumb. Now, when I start the machine it of course has the bios banner, and then grub, and then: ACPI BIOS Warning (bug): Optional FADT field Pm2ControlBlock has valid Length but zero Address: 0x[many zeros]/0x1 (20240322/tbfadt-611) amd_pstate: the_CPC object is not present in SBIOS or ACPI disabled r8169 0000:05:00.0: can't disable ASPM; OS doesn't have ASPM control /dev/sda1: recovering journal /dev/sda1: clean, 435913/4579328 files, 5183079/18310546 blocks If I do a warm reboot, it dies at the bios banner. After a minute it tells me the boot device (normal hard drive) is not supported and to set the comparability mode, press F1 to set it. Which I do, and bext boot gives me: grub> Which is no use at all so I reboot and now again have a normal grub menu. This time I select Advanced mode for my Linux boot. Now it boots happily along. And I can boit into Debian, TDE, the whole works, though now I am in rescue mode (which looks and acts just like any ordinary boot). Which is where I am now. In slight terror it will crash again, but otherwise wondering how I can proceed to make things normal again, Anyone have any ideas? dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

failed USB port - totally off topic
by William Morder 10 Dec '24

10 Dec '24

Sorry to post off-topic, but this one has me stumped. Has anybody else had a USB port just fail on them? I have three 3.0 USB ports on my laptop, which is a Lenovo 3.15 Ideapad, still reasonably new (less than two years). Last night I was moving round files, and left an external SSD plugged in when I took a nap for a few hours. (It's a WD MyBook, Easy Store or whatever: I have a lot of these WD drives, all similar but slightly different.) A couple hours later, when I got up again, my laptop was almost frozen, could only manage to get the screensaver to wake up, but couldn't get into my system at all. The SSD light was blinking; after an hour of trying to wake up the machine using mouse and keyboard, I gave up, did a hard shut down. When I restarted, everything worked fine, my SSD doesn't appear to be damaged; but the third USB port is not working now. This is kind of crucial for how I work, because I have no working internal hard drive at the moment; my internal SSD died awhile back, I discussed it earlier on the list. So at present, I use USB port 1 for a small unpowered USB hub into which I insert flash drives. USB port 2 is the flash drive on which my working OS (Devuan Daedalus with most recent TDE stable upgrade), and then USB port 3 is reserved for those SSD drives. When I get busy, I have a BIG powered USB hub with enough ports to accomodate the whole neighborhood. But I don't like to drag it out all the time, for many reasons; mainly because I try to keep it simple and my desk uncluttered. I could rearrange, use my powered USB hub to accomodate a new arrangement of devices, but it seems to me that a USB port ought not to just stop working. I have tried other SSDs, other connectors, as well as trying flash drives and other USB gadgets, but nothing works on this USB port. Is there any way to resurrect my seemingly dead USB port? Or can I replace parts and put in a new 3.0 USB port, etc.? Any help will be appreciated. If there are web pages treating this subject, I haven't found them yet. I don't mind doing my own research, if I know where to look. I also don't mind spending a little to repair or replace, but would like to avoid buying yet another new machine so soon. Bill

KPDF asks for password on some PDFs
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 09 Dec '24

Hi all! I just found that KPDF is (again) asking for a password on non-password-protected PDFs and fails to open the PDF if no password is given. The PDF preview in konqueror is fine. I have attached a PDF that triggers the behaviour on my system (KPDF 14.2.0~pre65-0debian13.0.0+3~a). Could somebody please verify? [TW20241206] TDM won't launch Plasma 6
by Felix Miata 09 Dec '24

09 Dec '24

Neither will running startplasma-x11 from Xterm in an IceWM session launched from TDM, but I can't find any clues in Xorg.0.log, journal, dmesg or .xsession-errors. Attached tail from tdm.log has lots of errors, but I can't tell that any suggest Plasma errors. The openSUSE forums report problems launching Plasma Wayland, but if there are any for X11, I'm missing them. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. no mute since 14.1.3
by Felix Miata 06 Dec '24

06 Dec '24

At least in my Debians, e.g. 11, 12, 13 (14.1.4~pre) on host g5eas, all of them online upgrades, the tray popup for "Mixer" has no mute button above the slider. Instead, there are 3 tiny triangles above the slider that do nothing when clicked. Right ckicking the speaker icon and then toggling mute has no effect either. I've made no changes to the applet's defaults. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. Linux User #211409 ** a11y rocks! *not* TDE related (at least not directly)
by Thierry de Coulon 04 Dec '24

04 Dec '24

Hello mailing list, This is not TDE related, but maybe someone can help. My main machine has stopped working. It boots to a dark screen when loading the system. - I can go to the BIOS - I see the GRUB menu - I see the initial (text) messages, but then the screen turns black - This happens for three OS installed on different disks (MX-21, MX-23, Debian Buster), so it's not a disk problem. - I can boot "Image for Linux" (from USB) and access the partitions (graphical screen, but at low resolution). The computer uses an integrated video card (AMD Ryzen 2400E) I'm trying to find out if this is a motherboard problem or a processor problem. For the moment I am thinking the problem is related to higher resolution, but I can't figure out what causes it. The important data has been migrated to another machine so no worry there, but I simply want to understand. What log am I to look for (all three systems are Debian based)? I'm thankful for any suggestion :) Thierry

TDE does not start after Ubuntu upgrade
by midi-pascal 03 Dec '24

03 Dec '24

Hi all, I Upgraded from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (with TDE 14.1.3 working like a charm) to 24.04.1 LTS. Trinity does not start anymore. Details: Upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04 using |"sudo do-release-upgrade -p '24.04.1 LTS'"| Ubuntu upgrade went well. Then, updated /etc/apt/sources.list.d/trinity.list to replace "jammy" with "noble" apt-get update worked apt-get upgrade worked Reboot... Trinity does not start anymore. Log in from prompt and typing "startx" I get the TDE splash screen and a message box saying: "Could not start tdeinit" "Check your installation" I did all this is on a spare disk partition (as usual, before taking the risk of destroying my working setup) so no arm done but I would like to upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS. This is why I ask for support. Thanks a lot, Pascal Note: On previous releases I used to install from TDE live ISO (so easy to with) but it looks like there are no more Ubuntu TDE live ISO... :-(

Building leaces files in /tmp
by deloptes 03 Dec '24

03 Dec '24

Hi, I noticed that the build of TDE or some components (on Debian) leaves many files in /tmp The files are called mldbm-elf-by-member-xxxxxx There is also a bug report [1] but I do not understand if the problem occurs only when something goes wrong during build. Does someone has any idea [1] https://bugs-devel.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1014083

Laptop Brightness Keys
by Darrell Anderson 29 Nov '24

29 Nov '24

On my Thinkpad T580 laptop, the Fn+F5 and Fn+F6 shortcut keys manually control screen brightness. These shortcuts function as expected with KDE and Xfce but not TDE. No special configuration is needed. I find nothing that helps in kcontrol or tdepowersave. I found a thread in this list discussing the issue but with no simple solution. What is needed to have TDE support these shortcuts to "just work" like with KDE and Xfce? Thanks.

Cannot start TDE after upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04 to 24.04.
by John Logsdon 22 Nov '24

22 Nov '24

An upgrade from 20.04 via 22.04 to 24.04 (necessary for other reasons) went quite smoothly and I then followed the TDE upgrade instructions. Before I always started TDE from the command line which was OK. Now I cannot find starttde anywhere so startx /opt/trinity/bin/starttde doesn't work. xorg etc is installed. apt search starttde returns ksmserver-trinity/now 4:14.1.3-0ubuntu20.04+0 amd64 [residual-config] Why 20.04? It seems that there is a lot of old stuff around. apt install reports that package is not available and then refers to a new package of the same name but which has no installation candidte. I've tried removing all instances of tde following the instructions but updatedb followed by locate still shows them and /etc/trinity, /opt/trinity etc are still there. Any clue how to fix this? I really don't like any of the default window managers so it needs to be fixed!! -- John Logsdon Quantex Research Ltd m:+447717758675/h:+441614454951
