Timeouts and/or mirror
by rolf 03 Jan '15

03 Jan '15

Hi, first of all I wish everybody out there a happy and successfull new year and happy hacking. Now my questions: I get a lot of timeouts when I try to update trinity. Mostly because "Translation"-files where not be found. Are they really needed? Second I would to know, if there are mirrors of the trinity repositories, perhaps faster ones near by. secure desktop area popup
by David Emerson 03 Jan '15

03 Jan '15

When I use my kvm switch to switch to another computer (well .. it is actually just K/M, I have video monitors attached to both so I can see both) then TDE puts up the "secure desktop area" dialog, hiding my desktop. It says <username> is currently logged on, and gives options for Lock Session, Task Manager, Logoff, Menu, Cancel. How can I disable this "secure desktop area" dialog? I never want to see it again. If I switch my keyboard and mouse away from this computer, I want to continue to see whatever was showing before. Thanks! ~David.

Ubuntu 14.04 TDE live CD problem
by Dan Youngquist 02 Jan '15

02 Jan '15

(the live CD on the website) The contents of Firefox's URL bar, instead of showing the text of the URL, shows a black and/or gray bar where the text should be. The text is still there -- it can be selected and copied -- it just can't be seen. This happens both when running from the live CD, and after installation. Everything else (having to do with the display, and otherwise) works fine and is perfectly normal. The problem doesn't occur when running from the Xubuntu 14.04 live CD. Is there a way to fix it? Thanks. -- PGP key: http://homestead-products.com/pubkey.htm

adept-notifier-trinity does not show green dot in system tray
by Ken Heard 01 Jan '15

01 Jan '15

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 The green dot was shown in the system tray before I activated my printer (HP LaserJet P1102) but not after printer activation. To activate the printer I looked at http://hplipopensource.com/ It told me that although the ppd for that printer is available in the version of hplip shipped with Wheezy (3.12.6-3.1+deb7u1), if I used the later version of hplip (3.14.10) I would benefit from ¨access to new features and bug fixes¨. So I downloaded that version and ran the command to install the later version of hplip. It wanted to install some additional packages but noticed that adept was installed and asked me to remove it before it would install them. I therefore purged all the eleven (?) trinity adept packages and their dependencies. Hplip installed some of those packages, but could not install two because of broken dependencies and then two more which did not exist. I then gave up trying to use hplip 3.14.10 and ran the two commands necessary to install the ppd from the hplip version in Wheezy, 'hp-plugin -i' and 'hp-setup -i'. The printer was consequently activated and usable. (In retrospect I should have disregarded the advice received.) I then reinstalled the eleven trinity adept packages including adept-notifier-trinity, but the green dot did not appear. Two reboots later it still has not reappeared. The only thing I could think of doing was to run deborphan and purge all orphaned libraries. After doing so the green dot still did not appear. I would consequently appreciate any advice on how to get adept to work properly again. Sorry to start another thread - deleted the previous one. I had an installation that I upgraded to R14. I can confirm that not only the kabc folder is neither copied nor renames to tdeabc, but actually tdeabc does not exist at all until one first starts kmail (maybe one must even start the address book). Once I got the empty address book, copying the content of kabc did the trick. Regards, Thierry

removing games and other cruff.
by Felmon Davis 29 Dec '14

29 Dec '14

greets! I just did a dist-upgrade (to R14 Jessie; exegnu) somewhat incorrectly, it made a lot of changes I hadn't intended but that's user error for the most part. one error was not filtering out stuff I consider junk, for instance 'games'. I thought I'd try purging them the so-called easy way using kpackage but when I get set to remove kdegames-trinity, it _looks_ like tde-trinity will go along it. I know this has to do with 'meta-packages' but I don't understand the implications. one gets the same result from apt-get. I'm happy, happier in fact, to do all of this using apt-get (or aptitude). I'd love a magical incantation or rather guidance on how to formulate one to remove this junk: games edutainment education science f. -- Felmon Davis Every silver lining has a cloud.

Lost my sound
by Andrew Young 28 Dec '14

28 Dec '14

Hello Using Ubuntu 14.04 and TDE 14. Yesterday after running sudo apt-get autoremove I was suddenly presented with an option to close or disable an X server (I think). I assumed it had something to do with a tty, at least not the desktop so I said yes. After selecting yes, the desktop disappeared and I was presented with tty1. I logged in and started the desktop with startx. At least I had a working Trinity desktop! However the volume control has a small red circle with a white cross partially covering it, hovering the mouse pointer over it causes a pop up to appear "Mixer cannot be found". As you can see from the log below I tried installing and reinstalling Alsa and Pulseaudio, even Arts, but still the sound didn't work. On IRC Slavek suggested "sudo aptitude install tdebase-trinity --without-recommends", after installing aptitude, it installed a few packages, but after a restart still no sound. However "sudo startx" did have sound! Eventually I gave up and reinstalled Ubuntu/Trinity. Next time what should I do to restore sound? Sharing printers
by multi 27 Dec '14

27 Dec '14

Hi, I have just installed exe linux with the Trinity desktop (exe is basically debian 7) and I am trying to share a local USB printer (HP Deskjet 1000). I checked the "Shared" box in CUPS but it still can't be found by other networked computers. I installed system-config-printer and it opened showing that the printer is shared. Any ideas? Also, I was going to include the version of Trinity in the first line, but I don't know how to find that. I usually open synaptic to find what versions are installed, but it's not listed under the name Trinity. Thanks, Don

Hello, My Lubuntu installation has been able to connect to a network secured with WPA2 and to another with WEP. My TDE installation, from the recent Exegnu live CD, can connect to the same WPA2 network but not to the WEP one - the authentication fails. Trinity settings files?
by Michael . 22 Dec '14

22 Dec '14

I finally got Trinity installed, the package download took 90 minutes (I'm assuming the server is still being throttled by traffic) and it looks good. I am working through various things so I can set Cobber-Trinity up for end users in Australasia. So I have some questions. 1. I want to set the background (and other visual settings) via /etc/skel/ so that each new user automatically has a certain background (national flag), theme, desktop icons, menu type, etc.. What is the settings file(s) in TDE to accomplish this, and where is it located in the users home directory? 2. There doesn't appear to be a setting for touchpads to work like mice (e.g. touchpad tap opens file like a left click opens a file). Is there a settings or settings file somewhere that can accomplish this? I'm sure I'll have more questions but this will do for the moment. Cheers. Michael.

Trinity Desktop Environment R14.0.0 Released!
by Timothy Pearson 22 Dec '14

22 Dec '14

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA224 The Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) development team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the new TDE R14.0.0 release. The Trinity Desktop Environment is a complete software desktop environment designed for Unix-like operating systems, intended for computer users preferring a traditional desktop model, and is free/libre software. Unlike previous releases TDE R14.0.0 has been in development for over two years. This extended development period has allowed us to create a better, more stable and more feature-rich product than previous TDE releases. R14 is brimming with new features, such as a new hardware manager based on udev (HAL is no longer required), full network-manager 0.9 support, a brand new compositor (compton), built-in threading support, and much more! Version scheme change Also new in this release is a change from the KDE v3.5.x series versioning. In line with our new, separate identity, and to avoid incorrect comparisons with KDE SC based on version number alone, we are dropping the old versioning scheme and replacing it with our new R-series versioning scheme. Each new release from this point forward will be identified with three numbers prefixed with an R (standing for "Release"); the first number is the major series, the second is the minor series, and the last is the Stable Release Update (SRU) identifier. A stable series will be indicated by a single Rxx.yy identifier, e.g. R14.0. Major overhauls of the codebase that significantly and permanently change the way TDE functions, such as the transition from HAL to the TDE Hardware Library or the new style engine, will only occur when the major series number increments. Normal, incremental development, including new features, will be indicated with an increment of the minor version number. Bug fixes backported to a stable series (Rxx.yy)--with no new features or changed functionality--will be indicated via an increment of the SRU identifier alone. Getting TDE Installation instructions and binary packages are immediately available for Debian and Ubuntu. Packages for RedHat/CentOs, Fedora, Mageia, OpenSUSE, and PCLinuxOS are being built by their respective maintainers and will be made available at a later date. Live CDs with TDE R14.0.0 preinstalled are available at https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/LiveCDs . Major Improvements from 3.5.13.x The following is a list of the major improvements TDE R14.0.0 includes. * New HAL-independent hardware support based on udev. HAL support is still available for those systems (such as *bsd) that require it. * Significant renaming of applications, libraries, and packages to avoid conflicts with other desktop environments (most notably KDE). This allows TDE to be installed in parallel with other desktop environments without significant negative interaction. * Upgrades to TQt3 (TDE's fork of Qt 3.3.8). TQt3 upgrades include a new, modern style engine, multi-threading support, and improved speed and stability. * Support for network-manager 0.9 and newer. * Switched compositor from Kompmgr to Compton-TDE, a fork of Compton with TDE-specific features. * Added builds for armel/armhf architectures on Debian and armhf on Raspbian Wheezy. * File mimetype detection system now based on libmagic. To see more highlights of this release, please visit the TDE R14.0.0 information page at https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Release_Notes_For_R14.0.0 . About TDE The Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) was forked by Timothy Pearson in 2008 from the last official release of the K Desktop Environment's third series (KDE3), version 3.5.10. It existed as a set of modified KDE3 packages for Ubuntu until 2009, when it was merged onto a proper source control system (KDE SVN) and rebranded as TDE. Shortly thereafter, TDE's core infrastructure was created utilizing spare computing capacity from Raptor Engineering; these infrastructure resources currently include the world's only Launchpad system based outside of Canonical Ltd. As the project grew, the TDE team migrated off of KDE's SVN server onto our own GIT server and has been completely independent from KDE from 2011 onward. - From the beginning of the TDE project, individuals from around the world have contributed to TDE, and our original desire to provide a powerful, functional desktop environment in the traditional style has been upheld. The TDE project still is led by Timothy Pearson utilizing Raptor Engineering's computing resources. TDE currently is growing faster than it ever has before, with many new contributors--and our dependable core team of developers--helping to add new functionality, repair bugs, answer questions on the mailing lists, and increase TDE's overall quality. TDE fits into a niche similar to that of the MATE project for Gnome, but TDE is geared more toward those who want a productive, efficient interface with a high customization potential. Our dedicated team is continuing to refine TDE instead of rebuilding it from scratch; this prolonged development is something rarely seen in the open source applications arena. While our niche position may not be as glamorous as some of the larger projects such as KDE and Gnome we believe TDE is no less important to those who rely on it and use it in their daily work, and we hope that in the future our niche will continue to grow. Developers Wanted The TDE development team is small but friendly. If you wish to participate in the TDE development process, please visit https://www.trinitydesktop.org/helpwanted.php for additional information. User Feedback Feedback from our users is an integral part of a large, user-experience oriented project such TDE. Whether you want to report a bug, suggest an improvement, or simply let us know your opinion of TDE, please feel free to contact us. Two good places to start communication are the project's mailing lists at https://www.trinitydesktop.org/mailinglist.php and its bug tracker at https://bugs.trinitydesktop.org . Contribute to the TDE Project Creating TDE requires significant computing resources and bandwidth. Please consider helping to keep us online with a donation at https://www.trinitydesktop.org/donate.php . Without your financial assistance, TDE would not be possible! Build from source tarball faced problem
by Tariq HO 21 Dec '14

21 Dec '14

Hi, I'm beginner of building TDE from source code tarball. I followed foot steps of installation guide. Even I can't say TQT has successfully installed via "make install". But I seems to be managed to execute "make install", with adapted TQT paths. After tdebase installed, I stopped. Suppose TDE R14 was my new desktop, but the desktop is still GNOME on my Debian Wheezy. What went wrong? Thanks, Tariq

a real upgrade mess

upgrade on my notebook machine went relatively uneventfully, so i thought it safe to upgrade desktop machine. and boke everything to the extent that i do not have x on the desktop machine at all. am running ubuntu-12.04LTS from a terminal, having added the specified lines to my sources.list and commented out the old tde lines, i did: sudo apt-get update sudo aptutide upgrade due to server congestion i had to run the latter several times. it then specified a problem, to be solved by removal of libcal2b-trinity and libqt-perl. the installation blows up in a fashion too long to list here -- i'd have to type it in character by characer, and it includes "25 not fully installed or removed" when i went back at it with sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. that command blows up with: dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/tdelibs-data-trinity_4%3a14.0.0-r1231-0ubuntu12.04.0+pr138_all.deb (--unpack): trying to overwrite '/opt/trinity/share/icons/crystalsvg/16x16/devices/cdrom_unmount_encrypt.png', which is also in package kdebase-kio-plugins-trinity 4:3.5.13.2-0ubuntu12.04.0+0 dpkg-deb (subprocess): data was killed by signal (Broken pipe) dpkg-deb (subprocess): error: subprocess <decompress> returned error exit status 2 Errors were encountered while processing: /var/cache/apt/archives/tdelibs-data-trinity_4%3a14.0.0-r1231-0ubuntu12.04.0+pr138_all.deb E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) not real sure how to proceed. ideas? thanks. -- dep The shortest distance between you and great fingerstyle guitar playing? Hi, I found, that trinity has problems with the qxl-X11-server, which is for working with the spice protocol and qemu/kvm. It seems, that the refresh did not work properly. I don't know, if it is a problem of trinity or the xserver-xorg? Attached a screenshot showing the problems Fine regards Rolf

little upgrade bump
by dep 20 Dec '14

20 Dec '14

lord how i hate upgrades anymore. not so much talking tde here but ubuntu. anyway, installed ubuntu 14.04LTS, i think -- i wonder if it blew up someplace, because it didn't, for instance, install grub so i had to do some commandline stuff to get it to boot from the new kernel. oh, for a return to lilo! but i think i have it all installed and somewhat working. more or less. so, then, installed tde. except that kmail doesn't work. so i started it from konsole. it says "kmail: error while loading shared libraries:libmailprivate.so:cannot open shared object file:no such file or directory" i'm really hoping that ubuntu is not trying to stick me with a kde4.x thing. so to begin with, i should ask: is "kmail" the command to start the tde version of kmail? -- dep The shortest distance between you and playing great acoustic guitar: the great new instructional DVDs from Marjorie Thompson, available at www.MarjorieThompson.com

upgrade path question
by dep 20 Dec '14

20 Dec '14

hey there, good people . . . this is a pretty lame question; fortunately, i'm old enough that lame doesn't bother me all that much anymore. it's been awhile since i burned a kernel, built open office from source, or built kde -- the way we used to, say, 15 years ago (i even once wrote a piece about whether it took longer to compile all of kde than it did to drive from connecticut to key west -- http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/opinions/3420/1 ). so now there's a new version of the real, useful kde, now known as tde. i'm on ubuntu 12.04LTS. time to do a general upgrade. what i'm seeking is advice as to the easiest, least-annoying way to upgrade both operating system and tde -- i'm using 3.5.13.2 -- without breaking, well, anything. i've kept the same configurations for ages. i like them. many took days to sort out and i forgot how i did them. so. anyone here have a decent recipe for upgrading the whole thing all at once, rebooting, and having what i have, only better? -- dep The shortest distance between you and playing great acoustic guitar: the great new instructional DVDs from Marjorie Thompson, available at www.MarjorieThompson.com

restoring keyboard settings after kvm switch use
by David Emerson 19 Dec '14

19 Dec '14

Hi all, I have made changes in kcontrol > peripherals > keyboard (repeat delay/rate). This works great when I boot up the computer. However, if I use a KVM switch to go to another computer and come back, the keyboard repeat delay and rate are messed up (probably default settings, not my settings.) What can I do about this, so that my keyboard repeat settings will be automatically applied when a (new) keyboard is plugged in / replugged? I can see that it is possible to set something up through udev, but I don't know how to script TDE changes that appear to require the GUI. How to script this? Or perhaps udev is not the right approach? Thanks! ~David. Just upgraded to R14, looking good so far! Great work guys

bug 236: user feedback needed
by Michele Calgaro 18 Dec '14

18 Dec '14

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Bug 236 (http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=236) is about KOrganizer and the length of a new ToDo event when selecting a single slot in the day agenda. The behavior is awkward because different from when longer intervals are selected. I would like some feedback from users/developers about the best way to fix it. Proposed options: 1) leave everything as it is. The user can change the above option to get a 15 minutes interval. IMO, a little awkward. 2) leave everything as it is but change the default value of the "Default duration of new appointment" to 15 minutes, so that by default double-clicking on a 15 minutes interval gives a 15 minutes interval. Users can still change the default interval if they want. 3) ignore the "Default duration" option and just use the length of the actual interval selected in the agenda. 4) others... IMO, option 3 or 2 will do. Please put forward your suggestions. The bug will be fixed as part of R14.0.1. R14.0.x and alternative 'preliminary-stable-builds' apt source
by Slávek Banko 17 Dec '14

17 Dec '14

Hi all, who you are accustomed to using my alternative apt source known as 'preliminary-stable-builds'. I would like to say a few informations about the current state and further perspectives. At the time of announcement final R14.0.0 all packages accurately matches state source code R14.0.0. Currently are underway final build, which only removes the "preliminary" number out from the version number. For example, for tdebase 4:14.0.0-s~1492-0debian6.0.0+169 => 4:14.0.0-s-0debian6.0.0+0. Therefore in the upcoming days we can expect update of many packages. In the future you can expect that into apt source will be included preliminary packages for the upcoming release R14.0.1. If you were previously accustomed to using my PPA v3.5.13-sru, know that it will work in the same way. Indeed, the same source packages I'll upload to this alternative apt source, as well as to new PPA on build-farm. From this PPA will be subsequently released the final maintenance versions. Thank you for your support in work on TDE! -- Slávek

Can't modify Desktop Behaviour
by Thierry de Coulon 15 Dec '14

Hello all Trinity users, On one machine (a T400), recently installed with Wheezy 7.7 and TDE 3.5.13.2, I can't change the Desktop Behaviour. If I unselect "Show icons on desktop" they stay. If, in Device Icons, I choose "Show device icons", the screen goes black, then comes back unchanged (and the options have also been set back). kdesktoprc seems ok, same as any other install. It's not very important because that's not a main machine but I'm puzzled as to why this happens. Thierry

Confusion about building from sources (R13.2 on Slack 14.1)
by Jagged O'Neill 09 Dec '14

09 Dec '14

High, now I'm trying to build R13.2 on Slackware 14.1, trying to follow the instructions found at https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/How_to_Build_TDE_Core_Modules This doc leaves several questions open: 1. It doesn't say which release this is about. In the "Suggested Build Order" section it talks about tqt3, so I guess it's about R14 already, though R14 isn't (actually) released yet. And what if any- one is forced (or just likes) to install R13.2 or even older release anyway? 2. It isn't clear about the build tool to use for the different packages. When talking about the autoconf -> cmake migration, there should be some details of which package in which release is to be done with which build tool, or each package should have a quick note about this in the README or whatever... I think qt3 itself is neither, but I'm not sure. It has no 'admin' and no 'cmake' subdirectory, but if this is an acceptable exception for me. It should be mentioned anyway, maybe for others, or maybe merely for the sake of being documented (or is it documented elsewhere already?). 3. Problems compiling tqtinterface: I manually ran ./configure on qt3 and it installed in almost no time, or rather, with almost no fiddling. But now I'm stuck for hours with the second step, tqtinterface. It has both a 'cmake' and an 'admin' subdirectory, but since the page mentioned above lists it in section "Building Packages with cmake", I first tried cmake, indeed. But with the instructions listed under "Performing a cmake Build" it just didn't work. It stopped after failing to run a cmTryCompileExec step, in which the compiler is called with /usr/bin/c++ -I/opt/trinity-3.5.13.2/qt3/include -DHAVE_USABLE_QT3 CMakeFiles/cmTryCompileExec737936600.dir/src.cxx.o -o cmTryCompileExec737936600 -rdynamic -L/opt/trinity-3.5.13.2/qt3/lib -lqt-mt This version is already altered from the "default"... I have put in the include path option, without which even the compilation failed, of course. But even then this step failed, due to countless undefined references, because the command line issued tells the linker to only drag in qt-mt, but none of X11, Xext, dl, z, jpeg, png, mng, and I don't know how many else. I have put in those mentioned here manually in a step-by-step, incremental, very tedious build/less $erroroutput/edit $buildscript process. Shouldn't the script, that tries to compile the program, know which libraries it needs and instruct the linker to drag them in? What am I doing wrong? Of course, maybe the "ready for cmake" list is indeed for R14, and as such doesn't match my sources. Buuuuuut... trying with autoconf also fails, because there isn't even a configure script. Oh, wait, I didn't _re_generate autoconf/automake files yet, as it has been suggested. But then, trying it yields nothing productive anyway: Copying the mentioned files from /usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4 /usr/share/libtool/config/ltmain.sh (maybe they're wrong?), then running $ make -f admin/Makefile.common *** automake (GNU automake) 1.11.5 found. *** Creating acinclude.m4 make[1]: Entering directory `/home/jagged/src/trinity-build/tqtinterface-trinity-3.5.13.2' make[1]: *** No rule to make target `libltdl/ltdl.m4', needed by `acinclude.m4'. Stop. make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/jagged/src/trinity-build/tqtinterface-trinity-3.5.13.2' make: *** [cvs] Error 1 Well, I'm completely clueless... :-/ Just in case it matters: Slackware 14.1, kernel 3.10.17 gcc version 4.8.2 ld 2.23.52.0.1.20130226 No idea if I should attach the error output from a cmake approach. 4. Some other points that I find a bit confusing - In the "configure and build" code boxes, you use /opt/trinity/lib/qt3* for QTDIR, but /opt/trinity/qt3* in PATH and PKG_CONFIG_PATH. Is this correct? Skype no sound (was: xine finds no audio drivers)

A search showed that newer Skype requires PulseAudio and recommended installing pavucontrol. Compiling from source required installing several dependencies. Dbus strongly recommended, but it has broken dependencies. Still no sound. I wonder if it all requires systemd. In which case, are there any usable Skype alternatives? Robert

Shortcuts and others difficulties
by Patrick Serru 06 Dec '14

06 Dec '14

Hi All, Back on that list after 2 years. I installed Trinity from Slavec (?) live CD. It is ok. Thanks a lot to the nice job the team as done. I just mentionned some prolems. Shortcut (boring, but for memory because of all the bug reports) : - the shortcut "Ctrl" "S" as two meaning in TDE Kate: classical "save" and "search". In the french version of a lot of sofware, the "F" is used instead of the "S" for search, as in "Find". It's looks a little bit more positive (-: and is so in other worlds (windows-fr, KDE3-fr, etc) - "Ctrl" "A" is "select all" in France (and US too ?). Living in Peru, I had the occasion to see that "select all" is "Ctrl" "E" for localised MS Windows. This a general standard problem, because editing a single line, like the name of a file in an "Open file" dialog, this shortcut permits to sélect all the characters of that line. - "Alt" F4" is usually the shortcut to close the active window (MS Windows, KDE3...). There is no such shortcut in latest version of TDE. KMail (not a big problem, but well strange) : I specified to the system that my keyboard was spanish, but nothing else related to that language, excepted the fact that local time is Lima's. In this version of TDE, the day of the week in the mail "header" is indicated in spanish like "Sáb" for saturday, "Mie" for wednesday, instead of [Lun, Mar, Mer, Jeu, Ven, Sam, Dim] in fr. Applications : This is more related to Ubuntu, I think; I did not succed to install and run Skype, Chrome or Chromium. I come from years (15 ?) spent with Süse - OpenSUSE (last is/was Oss 12.2 + KDE3.5) so, I am a bit lost in Ubuntu. I would like to install all the TDE application, for avaluation. I suppose that I should enter a "apt" command to do that all in one, but which one, please. In the first liveCD of Slavec, there was more tool to help administration of packages, or ? Finaly, the main question is: is there a local solution for solving these mshortcut problems, that are the most boring ? I am using TDE version R14.0.0 [DEVELOPMENT] (upgraded yesterday). Thanks for the attention you paid to this mail, Sincerly, Patrick

TDE starts on vt8 after power outage
by midi-pascal 06 Dec '14

06 Dec '14

When reading the thread "Lockups after unlocking screensaver", it reminds me an unanswered question I had months ago. I use Trinity 3.13.2 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. As far as I can recall (years), my TDE session started on vt7 (Ctrl-Alt-F7). After a power outage, I restarted my box and ever since TDE starts on vt8 (Ctrl-Alt-F8). Everything works well but I would like to understand the reason of this vt switch. I searched the web for an answer with no success. Does someone on this list has an answer? Nothing harmful, no bug, but curiosity... is on mars now :-) midi-pascal

xine finds no audio drivers
by Robert Peters 06 Dec '14

06 Dec '14

Hi, I'm running an install from exegnu-jessv-20141125 on a recent ThinkPad. Amarok when starting complains: xine was unable to initialize any audio drivers. Haven't found anything satisfactory in searching, but the problem goes back at least to KDE3. BTW, VCL works okay, after I select the mixer. Maybe it uses different drivers. Robert

TDEPowersave doesn't report running on battery
by Dan Youngquist 05 Dec '14

05 Dec '14

TDEPowersave always reports running on AC power, even when running on the battery, and doesn't give the low battery warnings. This started when I upgraded to R14; it worked fine in 13.2. It's a big problem because, when runing on battery, the machine just dies with no warning when the battery is dead. This is on an HP laptop running Debian 7 (Wheezy) and R14 from Slavek's repo, updated this morning. -- PGP key: http://homestead-products.com/pubkey.htm

problem with kpersonalizer and spanish
by Uwe Brauer 05 Dec '14

Hello Using Kubuntu 10.04 and trinity 3.5.13.2 I encountered the following problem. If I change the language environment from English to Spanish via kpersonalizer, - the icons become smaller - some applications such firefox crash with a signal 11 type error and a reference to gtk-qt-trinity. However kgtk-qt3-trinity is not installed. After removing the .trinity directory and restart trinity, but sticking to English everything is ok Has anybody found similar problems? Thanks Uwe Brauer

Both show on the left the "create link" dialog (Create New -> Link to Device -> nfs). It shows five tabs, the middle one being "Device". On the right you see the properties of an existing "Link to Device". On the desktop of 3.5.13.2 you have the middle tab. On the desktop of 3.5.14.0.0 it does not show. The Link does not get the correct icon and it does not work either (although mount <mount point> works, so the nfs mount does work). I also compared the Desktop Files, they are identical, so the problem is deeper. Thierry

Lockups after unlocking screensaver
by Mike Bird 05 Dec '14

05 Dec '14

Since installing RC2 I have twice experienced "lockups" upon unlocking the screen. I have never experienced these before. Once "locked up" the mouse has no effect and there is almost no keyboard effect. However numlock and capslock keys still flip their indicator LEDs and ctrl-alt-Fn can be used to switch to another console. First time: as root I restarted tdm-trinity. I didn't notice if there were any error messages. When Trinity restarted it was on a new console - alt-F8 instead of alt-F7. The second time: as root I stopped tdm-trinity. I noticed error messages saying the stop had failed. I killed -9 kdesktop_lock, stopped tdm-trinity again, and started it. This time Trinity started on the expected console. I'd appreciate any suggestions of any additional steps I should take to help diagnose the problem if it happens again. --Mike

kdeskto_lock issue
by Greg Madden 03 Dec '14

03 Dec '14

Debian Wheezy, Amd64, Nvidia quadro card, drivers from vender, dual monitors. In my .xsession-errors files I can see numerous entries: "tdecore] Deleting stale lockfile /tmp/tde-pabiVcZK3y/kdesktop_lock_lockfile" This crashes my X session, ~ 1 minute uptime, dumps me back to the login screen, totaly unworkable. I have been working around this issue because it only happens on 2 workstations with the same hardware specs, and drivers from Nvidia. I remove '/opt/trinity/bin/kdesktop_lock', I do not use screensaver or lock desktop, this works..until an update replaces the kdesktop_lock binary...this will stop eventually. I read bugs 2222 & 2230, re kdesktop_lock, I could run a backtrace if that would help and if someone could give directions on howto. I will file a bug with the backtrace. -- Peace, Greg

exegnu-jessv-20141125.iso
by Baron 29 Nov '14

29 Nov '14

Hi Guys, David, I've downloaded and burnt a CD from exegnu-jessv-20141125.iso. Its fine, checksum matches. So I thought that I would try it as a live CD on this, my usual machine. The CD boots up as I would expect except for a couple of things. After all the boot process, I'm left with a text screen with a list of boot processes, which never finishes. The last item refers to IPV6 and a blank line. Pressing enter gives me a prompt at which if I enter "startx" takes me to a totally black screen. I minute later I get the start screen for "exegnu" as a panel in the top left corner of the screen. After this screen has finished I'm left with the normal taskbar at the bottom and a totally black background. I cannot get anything from any mouse button on this background, I can however access items from the normal menu and the icons on the taskbar. Locating the screen menu items, whilst it allows me to go through the settings, does nothing. Curiously the "Scan rate" box shows zero and is not changable. Everything else seems to function as I would expect. The machine is a 3Ghz intel P4 dual core, 1.5Gb ram, on board 64Mb SIS 661 Graphics, SIS 661FX chipset, SIS 7012 sound, SIS 900 Ethernet. HTH. -- Best Regards: Baron

What about a Trinity Raspberry Pi Raspbian-based image?
by Alexandre 28 Nov '14

28 Nov '14

Hi, I'm thinking about making a Trinity Raspberry Pi image based on Raspbian, mostly because I don't see feature-full ready-to-use images avilable for the Raspberry Pi. All of the available images are very minimal and need some work to get to something interesting. I'm thinking about having all the regular common-use Linux software such as LibreOffice and Firefox, with a full-feature TDE desktop environment. So, I'd like to know if there would be some interest in it, if it worth doing it. Also, how many persons here have a Pi? Thank you! -Alexandre

TDE mirror system upgrades

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA224 All, In response the flood of reported issues pertaining to the TDE mirror system and Debian/Ubuntu update failures I have re-designed the TDE content distribution system. You should notice far fewer, if any, outright 404 failures and/or package inconsistencies. The bad news is that relatively new files are being transferred straight from the TDE servers and you will notice a severely throttled download speed for those files. However, in light of the issues being reported with the previous system this small disadvantage seems far preferable. Debian/Ubuntu users, please test and report back. Thanks! LibreOffice problem - TDE / KDE File Picker !?
by Thierry de Coulon 21 Nov '14

21 Nov '14

Hello all, Today I installed two versions of LO (4.3.4 at first, 4.2.7 later) on openSUSE+TDE 3.5.13.2 ; I have 4.2.5 running with no problem on a similar setup (albeit on another hardware). The problem is that when I try to install extensions LO freezes. I first thought it might be a problem of the latest version, that's why I tried 4.2.x, but no change. I then tried running it as root, same thing. In the end I read the crash message better (when it announced the install dialog had terminated) and noticed it talked about "KDE File Picker". I do have the basic components of KDE 4 installed (pulled in by some dependencies) but not the DE. I switched back to XFCE, started LO and installed the extensions with no problem. Back in TDE I can use the extensions. So this File Picker the culprit. Obviously LO can "see" when "KDE" is running, and uses another "file picker" if not. Is it trying to run a KDE 4 element under TDE, and crashed? Is it trying to use some TDE software but does not manage it? Maybe when everything is renamed "TDE" this sort of situation will be easier to debug. Thinking about my workaround, I remembered a setup point in options/general that offers to "Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes". Selecting that cures the problem. But it does not tell me if this is a TDE or KDE issue. Thierry

Package for arch linux
by Dr. Martin Senftleben 21 Nov '14

21 Nov '14

Hi, i have been using Trinity quite a lot, but due to problems with some distros I switched to Manjaro (based on arch linux), where it seems a bit more complicated to include TDE than in the Ubuntu derivates. I found the instructions on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Trinity. There it says I should edit pacman.conf (which I did) with the following lines: [trinity] SigLevel = Never Server = http://trinity.ceux.org/r14/x86_64 When running "pacman -Syu", I get the message that trinity.db couldn't be retrieved from trinity.ceux.org. Is this a permanent problem, or is there a typo or a different URL? I need Trinity and would be glad if someone could help. Thanks! Martin

kmail 1.9.10 on TDE 3.5.13.2: anyone else see this?

I'm running above mentioned kmail version on openSuSE 13.1 (and the problem seems not to occur on Debian): "Reply" and "Reply to author" don't quote the OP "Reply to all" and "Reply to mailing list" do quote correctly. As I don't know what happens to the code between compilations for different distributions I don't understand why 3.5.13.2 behaves differently, and it's not a problem difficult to live with. Maybe will disappear in 14. Have a nice day, Thierry

X60s/X200s kernel 3.7.0 compiled no wifi. (Old 2.6.32, ubuntu wifi works)
by Uwe Brauer 12 Nov '14

12 Nov '14

Hello Here is the short question: Did anybody successfully compile a kernel >= 3.7, within trinity and got the wifi to work for the machines mentioned above?? ---------------------------------------------------------------- Rationale and longer story. I am running a X60 and an X200, both with trinity/Kubuntu 10.04 (I know it is outdated but I have my reasons) and wifi works without any problems. I replaced in both machines my HHD with a SSD and reinstalled Kubuntu 10.04 again, using the jfs file system. I am very pleased with the results. However after the installation I found out that on the long time run I should use trim, which was not supported for jfs in the 2.6.32-37 kernel. I could upgrade the kernel via the backport releases but these backport releases did not include the kernel 3.7, which was the first kernel to support TRIM for jfs. So I should reinstall Kubuntu using either ext4 or xfs or compile a new kernel. So, I downloaded the 3.7.0 kernel on my X200 and run set of commands which I have attached belows. Now the relevant wifi intel driver 3945 for the X60s and the PRO/Wireless 5100 for the X200s seem to be compiled. However when I boot the new kernel and run the ifconfig command there is only the wired card detected but no wlan0 or eth0 device is found. I am puzzled: if I boot the 2.6.32-37 kernel I have wifi support but not with the 3.7 kernel. What should I do? I can run sudo ifconfig wlan0 up, but knetworkmanager and wicd do not find the wireless card. Any help is strongly appreciated Thanks Uwe Brauer I made lsmod on my X60 machine once with the new 3.7 kernel once with my old 2.6.32 kernel. broken packages qt3-dev, libdrm-dev
by Uwe Brauer 11 Nov '14

11 Nov '14

Hi I tried to install qt3-dev-tools in order to try to run make xconfig for compiling a new kernel. The installation failed. apt-get install -f was recommended, but also failed with the following message Unpacking libdrm-dev (from .../libdrm-dev_2.4.18-1ubuntu3_i386.deb) ... dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libdrm-dev_2.4.18-1ubuntu3_i386.deb (--unpack): trying to overwrite '/usr/include/drm/nouveau_drm.h', which is also in package linux-libc-dev 0:3.7.0-2 dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe) Errors were encountered while processing: /var/cache/apt/archives/libdrm-dev_2.4.18-1ubuntu3_i386.deb E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) Now all my packages are broken and I can't install anything. This never happened. Any ideas? Uwe Brauer

K3b Writing DVD copy stopped @00:05:36h/Remaining 00:00:03, 4119 of 4144 MB
by Felix Miata 03 Nov '14

Is $SUBJECT what making a coaster looks like? CPU is Core2duo E7600 3.06GHz. Source: DVD made from standalone DVDR with TV tuner on DVD-R finalized on PATA /dev/sr0 Destination: blank Verbatim DVD-R (CMC MAG, AM3) on SATA /dev/sr1 Other than selecing source and destination, and deselecting create/delete image (aka on-the-fly), I used only defaults, resulting in (auto) writing speed 22713KB/s (16.49x) in the upper pane. Target media is one of last dozen or so from spool of 100 several years old that I remember no previous trouble writing to. After more than 10 minutes since last screen paint I moved the focused copy window off its parent window, and only the focused window painted. After more waiting, I switched to a tty and found the following: $ df / Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda17 4843161 4429321 163952 97% / $ ls -lGg /var/tmp/kdecache-loggedusername/ total 128420 drwx------ 2 1024 Oct 21 21:51 background drwx------ 2 1024 Aug 8 2013 favicons -rw-rw-r-- 1 10547304 Oct 21 21:50 icon-cache.kcache -rw-rw-r-- 1 751197 Oct 21 21:51 ksycoca -rw-rw-r-- 1 1359129 Oct 21 21:47 ksycoca4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 656 Oct 21 21:47 ksycoca4stamp -rw-rw-r-- 1 752 Oct 21 21:51 ksycocastamp drwx------ 2 1024 Oct 21 21:50 libphonon -rw------- 1 14264 Oct 21 21:48 plasma-svgelements-default -rw------- 1 16189 Sep 13 2013 plasma-svgelements-openSUSE drwx------ 3 1024 Aug 8 2013 plasma-wallpapers -rw-rw-r-- 1 84377704 Oct 21 21:50 plasma_theme_default.kcache -rw-rw-r-- 1 84377704 Sep 13 2013 plasma_theme_openSUSE.kcache $ ls -lGg (/home/loggedusername/.trinity/cache-hostname/) total 128420 drwx------ 2 1024 Oct 21 21:51 background drwx------ 2 1024 Aug 8 2013 favicons -rw-rw-r-- 1 10547304 Oct 21 21:50 icon-cache.kcache -rw-rw-r-- 1 751197 Oct 21 21:51 ksycoca -rw-rw-r-- 1 1359129 Oct 21 21:47 ksycoca4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 656 Oct 21 21:47 ksycoca4stamp -rw-rw-r-- 1 752 Oct 21 21:51 ksycocastamp drwx------ 2 1024 Oct 21 21:50 libphonon -rw------- 1 14264 Oct 21 21:48 plasma-svgelements-default -rw------- 1 16189 Sep 13 2013 plasma-svgelements-openSUSE drwx------ 3 1024 Aug 8 2013 plasma-wallpapers -rw-rw-r-- 1 84377704 Oct 21 21:50 plasma_theme_default.kcache -rw-rw-r-- 1 84377704 Sep 13 2013 plasma_theme_openSUSE.kcache Whether any of those actually belong to the TDE session I dont' know, but I don't seem to be able to locate any other tmpfiles for it. Because/ and /home are different partitions, the identical sizes and timestamps between the two directories looked fishy to me until I noticed that /home/loggedusername/.trinity/cache-hostname/ is a symlink. So, one question I have is how to make the desktop user tmpfiles live in /homeloggedusername/ someplace instead of on /. On return to desktop, none of the K3b windows would repaint, so I force closed K3b from Kicker. Then I cleared /var/tmp/, which brought space used on / from 97% to 88%, available 1K blocks up to 588973, and got rid of all the big files in /home/loggedusername/.trinity/cache-hostname/. Comments? Window sizes when changing resolution
by iadest＠o2.pl 30 Oct '14

30 Oct '14

Hello I don't know, maybe it's a bug, maybe some misconfiguration but I have a question is it possible to fix this problem: I am using TDE 3.5.13.2, Debian Wheezy, running on Dell D430 subnotebook. This small computer has 1280x800 LCD, Intel GMA chipset. At home I'm docking my Dell and redirecting video using xrandr to external monitors: two 1600x1200 displays connected to dock's ports. The desktop is split on 2 monitors, the system menu/task bar is shown only in the left one, exactly as I want. The problem begins when I hibernate computer undocked and unhibernate it in a dock. It of course still shows picture on internal LCD, so I have a script with xrandr to set proper resolutions and settings. After changing resolutions and displays, Most of resizeable windows on screen become one screen (1600 pixels) wide. In this situation, the next one happens relatively rare: Konqueror's window sometimes have decoration placed higher than screen, so it can be moved or closed only from task bar menu. Is there any option in configuration to prevent this window expanding when resolution is changed? Shrinking works and is OK (it must be for reverse situation - undocking). MCbx

TDE website update and R14 status
by Timothy Pearson 29 Oct '14

29 Oct '14

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA224 All, The new TDE website has been updated to incorporate feedback received from both users and developers; it is hoped that this design strikes a proper balance between aesthetics and functionality. Many thanks to the TDE Web team, especially E. Liddell, for their work on the new site! R14 Release Candidate 1 is currently being built. This process should be complete somewhere around Nov. 10 2014 barring unforeseen difficulties. RC1 will take the form of a package set for Debian/Ubuntu along with an Ubuntu LiveCD that can be used for testing. The TDE project needs your financial support! If you can, please donate towards our operating costs at https://www.trinitydesktop.org/donate.php . In particular, due to the large size of the R14 binary package set we needed to increase the available Internet bandwidth temporarily until R14 is released; this change increased TDE's operating costs substantially and has put severe strain on the project's finances. Small Bug in kdm configuration
by rolf 28 Oct '14

28 Oct '14

Hi, I found, that the management tool (login configuration from within control center) for config kdm, creates the wrong user "Root" (with upper case "R") in kdmrc, if one selects, that only root can shut down the computer. Than the computer just stops with a console I have to login as root and powerdown the machine. So it is at least only a typo. System: Debian wheezy with trinity 3.5.13 Rolf

kbuildsycoca hangs --- no login
by Jagged O'Neill 20 Oct '14

20 Oct '14

High all, now again an active post from me, obviously with a problem report. Basic info: I'm running OpenSuse 13.1 with TDE 3.5.13.2-3.oss131.opt.x86-64 Because somehow I couldn't get TDE's display manager to run, the one in use is KDE4's, kdm-4.11.9-111.1.x86_64. Today I was hinted to quassel for an IRC client, checked the Suse repos, found and installed it. The installer reported as the only unresolved dependency for quassel-mono (monolithic/stand-alone package, nothing to do with the Mono runtime) the evenly provided quassel-base package, which I confirmed to also install. During the installation process, kicker crashed and when it was attempted to be respawned, the CPU load increased to 50% overall (2core HT current i5-M). The load was partially from kicker, partially from kbuildsycoca. After killing both, I tried to manually run kicker again, but the same happened, just with only one thread worth of CPU load occupied. "init 3" (I know it's not the same with systemd, but...) didn't even kill kbuildsycoca. After manually killing it, I switched back to RL 5, and I got the greeter screen (background), but no entry fields or menus or whatever --- the CPU load was again at 25%. After uninstalling the two quassel packages, I switched to RL 3 and back to 5 again, but there was no difference. I rebooted the box, and was prompted with the usual greeter, including the user/passwd fields etc., entered the password and the same happened again: 25% CPU load, in kbuildsycoca. I attached gdb to it, without really knowing what I should look for, but maybe one of you can read some valuable information from the backtrace: (gdb) bt #0 0x00007f462f734980 in __read_nocancel () from /lib64/libc.so.6 #1 0x00007f462f6d0338 in __GI__IO_file_underflow () from /lib64/libc.so.6 #2 0x00007f462f6cf678 in __GI__IO_file_xsgetn () from /lib64/libc.so.6 #3 0x00007f462f6c5418 in fread () from /lib64/libc.so.6 #4 0x00007f46319525f7 in QFile::readBlock(char*, unsigned long) () from /usr/lib64/libqt-mt.so.3 #5 0x00007f463195c6df in QDataStream::operator>>(int&) () from /usr/lib64/libqt-mt.so.3 #6 0x00007f463265e1c8 in KSycoca::kfsstnd_prefixes() () from /opt/trinity/lib64/libkdecore.so.4 #7 0x00007f463265e3c8 in KSycoca::language() () from /opt/trinity/lib64/libkdecore.so.4 #8 0x00007f462d0aa20a in kdemain () from /opt/trinity/lib64/libkdeinit_kbuildsycoca.so #9 0x00000000004090ff in ?? () #12 0x00000000004063be in main () gdb has also complained about plenty of missing debuginfo files for many libraries involved with kbuildsycoca. /proc/$(pidof kbuildsycoca)/maps lists 00400000-0040d000 r-xp 00000000 08:06 821948 /usr/local/opt/trinity/bin/kdeinit which covers all three unknown functions in the backtrace. If you want me to install it to exactly see which functions these are, just let me know. (Just btw: /opt is a symbolic link to /usr/local/opt.) What is the value of a HP ProLiant ML370 G4 server?
by Alexandre 18 Oct '14

18 Oct '14

Hi, I have at home a HP ProLiant ML370 G4 server that I bought in a garage sale at the beginning of the summer. It is in fully working condition with Debian 7.5 on it. Here are the specs: Year: approx 2004 CPU: 2 physical Intel Xeon 3.20Ghz CPU with Hyper-Threading, so the OS sees 4 cores Ram: 2gb, with many free memory slots Network: 2 server-grade EtherNet cards Graphic card: Ati Rage XL HDD: 3x Ultra320 SCSI 72.8gb 10000rpm, now in hardware RAID 0 Optical drive: DVD reader/burner: I replaced the original CD drive. Other: Tape backup drive, floppy drive, 3 USB 2.0, fully redundant fans, double power supply Weight: approx 90-100lbs This server is very fast, but I don't have much use for it. I'd like to know if it still has a money value, and how much would it still worth in production? I want to sell it, but I have no idea of what could be a fair/good price for it. Could it be useful for this project? Thank you for the info! -Alexandre

Additionally, per popular request we have transitioned from our old FOSWIki installation to a new MediaWiki installation, with all old content having been migrated over the course of several months. restoring keyboard settings after flipping kvm switch
by David Emerson 17 Oct '14

17 Oct '14

Thanks! ~David.

Loss of Kontact Kalendar module after update
by Marc Chénier 16 Oct '14

16 Oct '14

Hi, I used apt-get dist-upgrade last night, as I usually do when package updates become available on R14. After the latest update, I started Kontact: KMail works fine, as usual. But when I clicked on Kalendar, I got a "Kontact Error: Impossible to load the calendar module; can't open the module". I went to Configure Kalendar and got a message saying something like : "Could not find the specified korganizer library. Diagnostic is : can't open the module. Possible reasons: *An error occured during your latest TDE update, leaving an orphan configuration module. *You have a third party module somewhere." (as far as I know, I don't). I use Ubuntu Precise with TDE-R14 nightly builds on a 64-bit system. I need to get my Korganizer working again: I am fully dependent on it for all my appointments. Any suggestions? I checked this trinity discussion site several times to see if anyone else had the same problem: seems not so. Thanks in advance, Marco

I primarily use WiFi, and did try out KWiFiManager, but it appears to be quite buggy. Specifically, for my card it states that 'no networks [were] found' (but the same scan with iwlist returns a network list). I would ideally like to use network-manager, and while I have heard whispers online about a package called network-manager-tde (it turns up in a few Google results); it does not appear to be available in the TDE repository. I'm running Debian 7 (Wheezy).

Mozilla removed the ability to be embedded in anything a long time ago; we couldn't reactivate that plugin even if we wanted to. Best way forward is with Webkit; if I remember correctly there was an old RFE years back to add a Webkit renderer but no one was interested in financing the work so it went nowhere. Let's worry about R14 short term, then we can see if there is interest in moving to Webkit after that. That is a large project, so either we need several dedicated people working on it or it needs to be handled via the RFE system--obviously the "hope someone picks it up and works on it" approach isn't working for this task. ;-) Web developers, can you see if there is any way to modify the site slightly so that Konqueror can render it properly? If it helps I noticed something similar in Firefox when I had two nested tables in the body, so perhaps something isn't 100% correct in the CSS? Thanks! Hi everyone! My PCLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster version 2014, October 2 is ready to download! I call it non-official because it doesn't come from the PCLOS team and since it contains software coming from outside of their repos, it is also not supported by them. It only has a special ''permission to exist'' from the PCLinuxOS dev team. It is a complete system that can be used as a LiveDVD or it can be installed (from the LiveDVD). New on this release: -Fully updated PCLinuxOS 2014 base system -Based on stable TDE 3.5.13.2. It will probably be the last one to come with 3.5.13.2. -A theme switch Zenity script to let the user switch between the more modern theme I use and TDE Classic theme, to please more users. -A SuperKaramba theme pack -Kernel 3.16.xx On this LiveDVD: -Tons of TDE software and major apps like LibreOffice, Firefox and Gimp Login info (on the LiveDVD): Regular user:guest Password:guest Super user: root Password:root System requirement: A x86 computer with at least 384mb of RAM. It is a 32bit system, but it can be installed on a 64bit system too.
