Wifi connection problem on new ThinkPad
by Robert Peters 10 Apr '14

10 Apr '14

Hello, On a new Lenovo ThinkPad T440S I installed Trinity from exegnulinux_4.2.iso dated 24-Jul-2013. This is in addition to a preinstalled Windows 7 Professional. Running wicd does not detect any wireless networks, however, wicd in Trinity in my older laptop does detect them. And Windows in the ThinkPad also detects the networks, so wireless must be enabled. AND wicd doesn't even see a wired network when connected with a LAN cable. Do I need to configure wicd? Or install from a newer image such as exegnu_wheezy_r14_26032014.iso? Or install (L|X)Ubuntu and set up Trinity on top of that? Robert

kmail library problem
by aw30＠sayne.org 09 Apr '14

09 Apr '14

I've just upgraded to Debian Jessie, and things seem to work, with two exceptions: 1 I couldn't run xinit /opt/trinity/bin/startkde because ksmserver-trinity was not reinstalled by default. I think because of dependency problems, since I had to downgrade a few packages to get it to install. But that is now sorted. 2 Having got Trinity to run, everything (so far) seems to work except kmail, my favourite program! 4:3.5.13.2-0debian7.0.0.+0 has been installed. I get the following: 23:40 ~>kmail kmail: error while loading shared libraries: libkmailprivate.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory But it's there... 23:41 ~>la /opt/trinity/lib/libkmailprivate.so -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8071664 Jun 14 2013 /opt/trinity/lib/libkmailprivate.so It seems to be the only file with this problem - it has the same permissions as all the rest. Where do I look next? And before you ask, no, I'm not using kmail to write this, but webmail, so sigs and things are a bit different... cheers ant

Translating Trinity
by Jan Stolarek 08 Apr '14

08 Apr '14

I already said this twice in the past, but there wasn't much response: I'd like to help with translating Trinity into Polish language. At the moment there are many translations missing. I am willing to do the translation as long as I don't need to get into technical details like learning some fancy developer tools and alike. Just plain text files or some really simple dev tools. Does official 3.5.13.2 SRU have hal or other hot-plugged h/w support?
by Z2 07 Apr '14

07 Apr '14

I'm referring to the batch of packages at http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/trinitydesktop.org/trinity/releases/3.5.… as the "official" 3.5.13.2 SRU, and was wondering if things like the old KDE desktop-popup-on-usbstick-insert is expected to work? I'm running hal-0.5.14, though that may not have been installed at the time I compiled kdelibs-trinity-3.5.13.2. I do notice that the kdelibs-trinity-3.5.13.2 that's on the official 3.5.13.2 SRU release page does _not_ have a visible "WITH_HAL" option, nor any other h/w related settings such as "WITH_UDISK" etc. So is it a known "feature" that this release doesn't isn't expected to work with hot-pluggable h/w, or is it just me? z.

How many 3.5.13.2 SRU's are there???
by Z2 07 Apr '14

07 Apr '14

Hello, I'm a bit frustrated: http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/trinitydesktop.org/trinity/releases/3.5.… gives a list of trinity packages in TDE 3.5.13.2. To use one example of a package listed on that page (there are many more examples), I can get kdelibs-trinity-3.5.13.2.tar.xz from there. Now I go to the git webpage: http://git.trinitydesktop.org/cgit/ and there is no such package as kdelibs-trinity or kde* anything for that matter. But, there is tdelibs, with a tdelibs-3.5.13.2 tarball: v3.5.13.2 tdelibs-3.5.13.2.zip tdelibs-3.5.13.2.tar.gz Slávek Banko 10 months So, just to state what's looking pretty obvious, your http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/trinitydesktop.org/trinity/releases/3.5.… release page is about as useful as tits on a boar, right? Look, tdelibs-3.5.13.2, for all intents and purposes, has the appearance of belonging to trinity-blah-blah-blah release "3.5.13.2". But its not listed on the release page for the oh so boldly announced: "2013.07.21: Trinity Desktop Environment 3.5.13.2 SRU Released!" Why am I wrong in assuming that packageXXX-3.5.13.2 would belong to the "TDE 3.5.13.2 SRU Released!" collection of tarballs? Isn't 3.5.13.2 == 3.5.13.2 ? Maybe not. And even if I'm wrong about that, why isn't kdelibs-trinity even so much as listed on the GIT page? Even if its obsolete, there should a dead-link or something there saying so...whatever, not important. What is important is the fact that kdelibs-trinity-3.5.13.2 is vastly different than tdelibs-3.5.13.2, to wit, tdelibs has additional directories and functionality, etc. So two packages, each with the same version, only one of which is needed, and both of which fullfill the same role, are currently in a state where the obsolete one is listed as part of the official release download page, and the good one can't even be found referenced as part of the official release. So is there a collection of tarballs for a particular release, such as 3.5.13.2 SRU, or not? Should I just pull all tarballs from the git page? And if its just something as simple as a rename of kdelibs-trinity -> tdelibs, why wasn't the version bumped when extra directories were added? Never mind, I don't care about the "why" of anything. I just want to know where the hell I can download a set of "official" (whatever that means) packages for tde-3.5.13.2. And the release page ain't it...And by the way, I'm looking for source code, not some pansy mamby-pamby prebuilt set of binaries. Thanks, z.

Testing latest R14 nightly
by John Pisini 02 Apr '14

02 Apr '14

I tried the latest r14 nightly out on Ubuntu 12.04 for the most part it works very well, hats off to you guys. Seems faster than 3.5 and svg files seem to be handled better in this version. I like the reorganization of the control panel menus. A couple of small things I noticed Konqueror the file manager locks up (on two machines and a VM) requiring it to be shut then reopened. Also KLcdDimmer no longer works in this version. If I get some free time I will open bug reports but I am not really sure what to put in for the file manager I get no errors it just stops responding but will let me close it and reopen no issues.

I also tried purging hal package but with no result. One thing that changed after the upgrade is that kpowersave icon in the tray is greyed out when I log into Trinity, as if HAL was not accessable. Only after several seconds it becomes normal. Please note that kpowersave reports HAL as enabled and complains when I shut down hal daemon. So there seems to be some communication between them (just reading from HAL?). Is there any way I can debug this? I recall struggling with similar problem under KDE3 and OpenSUSE. Back then it was a matter of some dbus permissions. > This embarrassing situation was a strong motivator for the complete > removal of HAL in R14. ;-) This begs the question when will R14 be released. KPowerSave doesn't indicate battery level
by Jan Stolarek 01 Apr '14

01 Apr '14

I recently upgraded from Squeeze to Wheezy and at the sam time I upgraded Trinity. I just realized that after this upgrade KPowerSave: a) always indicates that the power cord is plug in, even if it's not; b) does not show battery level c) after going into KPowerSave settings display and selecting a power scheme on the first tabs display brightness and CPU speed are greyed out and marked as "not supported" Calling `acpi -b` indicates battery level correctly. I also notcied that in KControlCenter I can't control brightness in Display settings. OTOH I can change display broghtness by using function keys. I suspect that I might be missing some packages or that permissions might be incorrect. Thoughts? Janek

Bug ?
by Baron 30 Mar '14

30 Mar '14

Hi Guys, I think I may have stumbled across a bug in the version of Trinity that I use. PCLinuxOS from Alexandre's iso. If I click on "Home" Konqueror opens, if I then open a second new window by right clicking and choosing "Open in a new Window" on a directory. I now have two open windows. If I then create a new directory in the first window and open that. I now have three windows. If I now try to drag and drop a file from the second window into the new 3rd window the files end up in the first window. Not in the new 3rd directory. The same happens if I try to create a directory or a file in the new directory. It appears in the first window. Files do drag and drop correctly from the first window into any directory in that window. It gets very confusing items that you think you have put somewhere appearing somewhere else. -- Best Regards: Baron.

Alternative APT source 'R14 preliminary stable-builds'
by Slávek Banko 29 Mar '14

29 Mar '14

Hi all, in light of the recent problems on the build-farm, I used the fact that ever since work on v3.5.13-sru I have the automated preparation of source packages and at the same time I have a private builder where I am doing the test building, and where I have available all supported Debian and Ubuntu distributions (for example, see my test for building on Ubuntu Trusty). I optimize my production line for building packages, so now I have ready alternative APT source containing packages for all supported Debian and Ubuntu distributions. The same packages will be in the future uploaded to my PPA on build-farm, where they will serve as maintanance releases for R14. Similarly, as was my PPA for v3.5.13-sru branch. Therefore, this apt source I call 'R14 preliminary stable-builds'. In order that the packages were readily available, they are synced to my primary mirror. What to do if you want to use it? 1) Add the source to sources.list: deb http://mirror.xcer.cz/trinity-sb *distribution-name* deps-r14 main-r14 2) From some public GPG keyserver download my key and import it into APT: sudo apt-key adv --keyserver pks.gpg.cz --recv-keys ED1F4884 3) Update the packages in such a way as you used to do it :) I hope it will be helpful. -- Slavek

Bugszilla whining poll (i.e. the "your bugszilla bug list needs attention" emails)
by Michele Calgaro 28 Mar '14

28 Mar '14

Dear all, I recently had some discussions with Tim and Slavek about the bugszilla whining functionality, i.e. the "your bugszilla bug list needs attention" emails that are sent out automatically every day. We would like to fine tune that, but first we need to know your opinion about it. Here are some possible options to choose from: 1) the whining emails are reeeeeally useful, please spam my mailbox every 5 minutes so I won't forget what bug I am supposed to be working on instead of spending my time deleting emails. 2) the whining emails are useful and the current setting is ok. 3) the whining emails are useful but the frequency of the remainder is too high (currently daily). It would be better if the emails were sent weekly/bi-weekly/monthly/every 3 months/every 6 months/once a year/once every 5 years.... 4) the whining emails are useless to me but they don't affect me. 5) the whining emails are useless to me and would prefer not to receive them if possible. 6) please stop sending me those useless stuff. Pleeeeeeeease!! Really, please! Looking forward to your opinions, so that we can fine tune the settings in the best way. Cheers Michele

3/22/2014 32b nightly live CD almost a production distro
by Chris Graham 25 Mar '14

25 Mar '14

For testing purposes I multi boot 9 OS's, all but one with Trinity DE. I've tested 3 or 4 nightly build CDs and a couple of regular Ubuntu builds, as well as Exe 3.3 and 4.1 and a bunch of apt installs on other Debians and Ubuntus. Have had about 15 different Trinity installations total. Even buggier versions were fast, stable and reliable on ancient hardware. This 3/22/2014 nightly is close to being a really good turn-key distro straight out of the box. I only had two major problems that are easily solved: [1] The gtk-qt-trinity theme engine still causes a serious Firefox crash. I normally just remove it because the feature isn't really necessary. It's more stable in Mint 15 installations which also have either Mate or Xfce. [2] Pulseaudio was not installed. Sound initially worked without it but then failed. Installed pulseaudio and then ran 'alsa force-reload' and now sound + video seem to be reliable. And two minor bugs: [3] Control center menu should always be visible by default, but have recently become hidden by default. [4] Odd mis-rendering of Synaptic and Transmission widgets under Trinity. None of the core functions are affected, just looks funny. Occurs with or without Mate or Xfce installed alongside Trinity.

This address, the one used for this post, I don't normally use, and is not registered, but since Alexandre replied to my "Error message" post (Thanks Alexandre) I still don't see either of my/the original posts. Tim, what is the status of that broken chiller? If the donation have not been enough to cover for its replacement, do you think it would be possible to get it repaired instead? Personally I don't need that chiller since I build on my own computer, but sure there are a lot of users/testers out there that have been relying on the nightly builds so far and would or could be affected by the lack of them if they don't use Wheezy or Trusty. Just wondering. Cheers Michele

R14 NetworkManager icon problem
by Dan Youngquist 18 Mar '14

I installed R14 nightly builds on Debian 7 (Wheezy) a couple days ago, and everything looks fine. The NetworkManager icon was normal. Then I installed a few miscellaneous programs, and somewhere in that process the icon turned into a little dot. It looks like it did when I tried to install the Squeeze version of NetworkManager on Wheezy, probably 2x2 pixels. Any ideas what might've done that? After the point where I know it was working fine, I installed: k3b kuickshow abiword kcalc ttf-mscorefonts-installer bibletime cpufrequtils kima klaptopdaemon kmix ntpdate ...and of course all dependencies for the above. TDE v14.0.0 official bug list
by Michele Calgaro 15 Mar '14

15 Mar '14

Dear all, the TDE development team has finally prepared a list of bugs that will be addressed for the release of v14.0.0. The list is available on the etherpad (http://trinity.etherpad.trinitydesktop.org/39) and on bugszilla as meta bug 2014 (http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=2014). If there is a specific bug that you think should be fixed in v14.0.0 and that we have not included, feel free to propose it in the mailing list for consideration. Please keep in mind that such bugs should be blockers/critical or cause major loss of functionality to users. We are looking at freezing the list in one week time (after 2014/03/19 US time). The current list of bugs is quite long as you can see, so v14.0.0 will probably not be release before 2-3 additional months of development, based on the resources currently available. Nevertheless we have a soft-freeze in place and so development should be focused mainly on the official bug list. Cheers Michele

I have for some time had TDE key problems on my husband's desktop. I keep thinking that it must have been solved by now and trying again. He has Wheezy with TDE 3.5.13.2, just as I have. I have no problems with my own key. Here is my latest attempt: root@Nyx:/home/peter# apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net --recv-keys 2B8638D0 Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /tmp/tmp.pZxq195osY --trustdb-name /etc/apt//trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --primary-keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-squeeze-automatic.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-squeeze-stable.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-wheezy-automatic.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//debian-archive-wheezy-stable.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//pkg-mozilla-archive-keyring.gpg --keyserver keyserver.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net --recv-keys 2B8638D0 gpg: requesting key 2B8638D0 from hkp server keyserver.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net gpg: key 2B8638D0: "QuickBuild Trinity Desktop Environment" not changed gpg: Total number processed: 1 gpg: unchanged: 1 I copied and pasted the apt-key line from the wiki. And here is why I think that I have a problem: root@Nyx:/home/peter# aptitude update > key.txt W: GPG error: http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net wheezy Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 099723A280479E11 root@Nyx:/home/peter# And key.txt is here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/7068342/ I must solve this. He never banks on line, but even so ..... Any ideas? Lisi

KBabel PO compendium broken links
by Michele Calgaro 09 Mar '14

09 Mar '14

Dear all, bug 1833 (http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=1833) reports discontinued links to KBabel po compendium files. I googled a lot and seems the problem goes back to the KDE days. I am looking at removing those links and perhaps the whole TMX and PO compendium module pages, but before doing that I would like to know if any of you has been able to use them and in case which link you have used. Feedback is appreciated. Thanks Michele

New KPersonalizer wizard picture set proposal
by Alexandre 08 Mar '14

08 Mar '14

Hi, Here is some new pictures to replace the KDE 3.5 stock images found in the KPersonalizer wizard. It would make a great first impression to new users for the upcoming R14 and it would make TDE look like it has progressed since the last 10 years. You will see that while they are new, they do have some inspiration from the old ones. It is based on CrystalSVG, KFaenza and MoodinKDE. If you want, I can provide my GIMP files. Any __constructive__ ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! -Alexandre

either easy or impossible -- reverse mouse theme
by dep 06 Mar '14

06 Mar '14

greetings, good people . . . back on the glory days of OS/2 -- yes, i'm *that* old -- i had a wonderful utility that allowed the user to create his own mouse pointers. after fiddling with it for awhile, i came up with a scheme that was the reverse of whatever it was over. you have no idea how useful and precise this proved to be. by "reverse" i mean over black it would be white, and so on. it was transparent, so over text the text, reversed, would show through. i looked for but never found anything that worked similarly in linux. alas, i'm reaching that point where a mouse pointer, i-beam, etc., big enough to see is too big to use with anything like precision. (i told you i'm old!) so i am wondering if among the genuinely sharp minds here anyone can imagine a recipe for turning an existing mouse pointer theme into something like the setup i had in OS/2. this would involve finding the actual theme images -- i'm not sure either as to the format or where they live -- and editing them by replacing the colors with . . . what? if anybody has and sense of this and passes it along, if i can make it happen i'd happily offer the result for inclusion in future releases (or as an add-on now, if anyone wants it). ideas? -- dep The shortest distance between you and playing great acoustic guitar: the great new instructional DVDs from Marjorie Thompson, available at www.MarjorieThompson.com

SS_lib_type question
by mali salmon 04 Mar '14

04 Mar '14

Hello trinity users I used Trinity to assemble ~700M paired-end reads using the following command "Trinity.pl --seqType fq --left left.fq --right right.fq --SS_lib_type FR --output ./ --JM 300G --CPU 15" The run was successful, and I got a list of contigs. Now I realize that the data was not strand specific, and I am wondering how does the adding of "--SS_lib_type FR" parameter affect the assembly. Shall I redo the assembly? Thanks Mali

Problem with tdebase-trinity on amd64 system
by Marc Chénier 27 Feb '14

27 Feb '14

I lost my graphical desktop and now have only console access. This happened because I could not update the tdebase package with adept updater; there was always that one package left that could not be updated (something broken). So I thought I could fix this by removing the tdebase-trinity package from my system and then reinstalling the package fresh. So I rebooted and went into recovery mode to a root console and did that with apt-get remove, which also removed 2 other packages: ksmserver-trinity and tdebase-runtime-data-common-trinity Then I tried to apt-get install tdebase-trinity (and the 2 other packages) but could not do it because of an unmet dependencies problem for tdebase. About 20 packages are listed that need version pr82 and not version pr80 of tdebase. So I spent many long hours on various forums looking up info and did everything in the book: checked sources.list; did apt-get clean, autoclean, update, upgrade, dist-upgrade; tried apt-get install -f and dpkg --configure -a ; I also tried aptitude install which indicated it was going to install 3 packages but then did not because of unmet dependencies and gave me only one solution: keep the 3 packages at their current version [not installed]. I then thought of looking up the package on the TDE nightly builds website and noticed that superseded version 81 and published version 82 were marked with a red X (build failures) for amd64 systems. Is this relevant to my problem? Does that mean it will be fixed and I just have to wait a while? If not, is there a solution or a workaround so that I can get my faithful TDE desktop back? Thanks ahead for any help Marc TDE 14 (nightly builds) on Ubuntu Precise installed from live TDE-CD on an amd64 board

If systemd, then do you have consolekit installed? If no, then TDE must be patched to work in a systemd environment without console kit. The problem is user session/process tracking in TDE has not been updated to work with systemd. If you have systemd+consolekit and launch tdm through the old sysV init script, then everything will work through systemd compatibility mode. Without consolekit you have hit bug 1902. In that case, user mount of drives and access to sound may not work. Further, any tdeio processes opened (e.g. http/file/sftp) will not exit when the connection is closed and you will end up with LOTs of tdeio_file, tdeio_http, tdeio_sftp processes running on your box. However, there is a limit to the number of simultaneous processes that can be opened, so you will not run into a memory exhaustion situation. See: http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1902 This is a known issue and should be fixed shortly. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

TDE depends on xorg
by Greg Madden 14 Feb '14

14 Feb '14

I have been trying to find the package or meta-package in TDE that depends (installs) the x-window system, ie xorg. Would it be a good idea to depend on xorg ,or similar, if TDE does not do so ? It is atypical ,afaikt, for most DE to not include the x-window system. Are most ou you installing TDE after installing another DE ? -- Peace, Greg

Hi! Here is a great collection of wonderful wallpapers, which are creative-common licensed: http://www.ravewallpapers.com They are a great addition for your computer, especially if you work in an office without windows to look outdoor. I found it on kde-look.org Maybe it would be a great way to refresh the collection of wallpapers released with TDE, which starts to get a little old. If someone is interested in it, I can choose some of them, so they could be part of TDE R14. Maybe a new default wallpaper could be choosen in that for the upcoming R14? Have a nice day! -Alexandre

Hi. I realize that this is very much "preaching to the choir", posting this on the Trinity users list, but I thought some of you might like the post I did last night showing how easy it is to install the Trinity-DE system on Debian. http://anarchic-order.blogspot.com/ Criticisms, corrections and caveats gladly received, the comment area is open to all. What's your favorite application or feature in Trinity-DE? Mine is Kmail, by a wide margin. Curt- -- The secret of happiness is freedom, and the secret of freedom is courage. - Thucydides

kmail index problem
by Thierry de Coulon 11 Feb '14

11 Feb '14

Hi all, I have trinity (3.5.13) installed on debian wheezy. I just set up a new machine with the Haswell chipset and copied my installation on the new machine (I used clonezilla for that). As wheezy does not support Haswell, I had to install the 3.12-0.bpo.1 kernel. I also has a small problem setting the time (I mixed up dd/mm/yyyy and mm/dd/yyy). Now I get a message every time I start kmail, saying there was a problem with the indexes. kmail recreates the indexes and does work, but it does not cure the problem (I also deleted all indexes, *.index and *.ids, but it does not help either). the permissions seems ok (644) and the owner is right. Anyone has an idea what's going on? Thierry

KNetworkManager not working in Wheezy?
by Jan Stolarek 06 Feb '14

06 Feb '14

I just upgraded my Debian to Wheezy and I am surprised to see that KNetworkManager can't be installed. I recall reading something about it in the past on this list and I also remember that R14 is supposed to have a solution for this. I looked throughthe list archives, but couldn't find a solutions. So three questions: 1. What applet can I use for managing network connections? 2. Should I give up on network-manager altogether? 3. What is the reason for this situation (yes, I am interested in developer's perspective)? Janek

trying to sort out krandr-trinity
by dep 05 Feb '14

05 Feb '14

greets, good people! there are worse problems to have, but i'd like to sort this one, if it can be done. i have a main monitor, which os a 27-inch LG running at 1920x1080. it's a calibrated monitor and i do a lot of pictures, so its happiness is important to me. on a shelf above it i have an acer 24-inch, at 1920x1200. both are attached to a nvidia 630 card using dvi-d cables. using the resize and rotate application from trinity 3.5.13.2, my choices are 3840x1200 or just one monitor. to get from one to the other i must send the mouse off the right side of the master screen (the acer, but i think that that's because of how i have 'em coming from the card, and i shall reverse them. also, my screen background is cut in two. in that it is an application, that makes things kind of weird. so. is there some configuration that would allow me to have my background on one (or both) of the screens separately? more important, is there some way with krandr to use both screens at native resolution? finally, is there a way to set it up so that i take things off the top of the bottom screen to get to the top one, instead of off to the right? i figure that it's either fairly simple or all but impossible. and that it's scarcely an earth-shattering issue. but if anyone knows how to resolve this, pardon the pun, i would much appreciate it. thanks in advance. -- dep The shortest distance between you and playing great acoustic guitar: the great new instructional DVDs from Marjorie Thompson, available at www.MarjorieThompson.com

Issues with Kicker (hidding, configuration-dialog), nightly builds of R14
by Richard Lamboj 02 Feb '14

02 Feb '14

Good evening! i have some issues with Kicker using nightly snapshots of R14, i'm not able to hide a panel on every screen; hidding the horizontal panel works only on the 3rd one. I'm using the NVIDIA drivers 331.38 on Debian Wheezy (AMD64). I created another panel, the configuration-dialog shows that the hide-button should be visible on the top of the panel, but there is no button. One panel is horizontally, the other vertically aligned. Does anyone else have related problems with Kicker? With kind regards, LJ

Problem mounting external disks
by Marc Chénier 30 Jan '14

30 Jan '14

I have been using Trinity 3.5.13.2 with plenty of satisfaction under Kubuntu Ocelot. I made a clean install of Precise Pangolin using the Trinity live cd (3.5.13.2) on a newly acquired used AMD computer and have managed to get it working fine except for few fine points I cannot figure out how to do. For example, 1) Under Ocelot, I used to be able to plug in a usb stick and immediately get an icon of it on my desktop with a recognizable name (like "Lexar" ) with a dropdown menu allowing me to mount it. It would then be mounted on /media/Lexar which I found very convenient and I could then see it fine in my Konqueror file manager. Ditto for cdroms. There were also no special entries in my fstab file referring to usb or cdrom devices. So how do I get this going on my new Precise installation? 2) Under Ocelot, in Konqueror, from a dropdown list in VIEW, I could choose see files graphically according to the space they all took on my hard drive (called something like "File size viewer"). This particular option is not in the droplist of my new installation. Konqueror version is " 3.5.10 using Trinity 3.5.13.2". How do I add it back in? If I could get a couple of pointers, life would be easier. Thanks in advance. Marc

Hi everyone here! Here is some cool screenshots of my PCLinuxOS TDE setup that I just wanted to show. It is different from stock TDE, but it shows what could be done. Fast easy way to convert jpg to pdf?
by Dan Youngquist 18 Jan '14

18 Jan '14

Is there a fast easy way to make images into PDF's? Something that does it from within Konqueror would be ideal. I'm sure there must be something, but I can't find it. KDE3 had kim, which added some image functions to konqueror's menu -- format convert, resize, and some other stuff. But it doesn't seem to be there in Trinity. -- PGP key: http://homestead-products.com/pubkey.htm

Display a message once after installation
by Alexandre 18 Jan '14

18 Jan '14

Hi! On the dev mailling list, Darrel Anderson wrote that he wanted a way to display a message just one time after the installation. Here is how it is made in my PCLinuxOS remaster (and the original too): A little script is placed in the Autostart folder of the users when users are created (/etc/skel is the default base user profile) It shows a little Zenity dialog and launch a web page. Once it is executed, the little script is auto-destroyed. As an attachement, I included the script. For more details of how it works, you can install my PCLinuxOS noin-official TDE remaster (in the LiveCD page of this website) and you'll be able to see it when a user log in for the first time. Of course, Zenity (GTK2) could be replaced by a TDE equivalent. Have a nice day! -Alexnadre

Automaticly start an application when a USB storage device is plugged in
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 06 Jan '14

06 Jan '14

Hi all! Maybe somebody has a good idea how to accomplish this with TDE stock tools: I want to start a specific program when a USB storage device is plugged in. On TDE a dialog window pops up with basicly 2 options: "mount" or "do nothing". I'd like to intercept that dialog and filter according to the device type/serial number/name (what ever works) either to start the defalt TDE dialog or my program. At the time of writing I am using udev to solve the problem. But obviousely I have problems launching TDE applitaions from that context. Release date for R14?
by Jan Stolarek 03 Jan '14

03 Jan '14

Hi, I wanted to ask about current status of R14. I found the roadmap here: http://trinity.etherpad.trinitydesktop.org/39? Are things going more or less according to this schedule and we can expect R14 in a month or so? I'm asking because I'm planning to update to Wheezy on one of my machines, but I can delay it for a month or two and just install R14 without bothering to upgrade from 3.5.13.2. Janek

a puzzle, maybe or maybe not trinity-related
by dep 30 Dec '13

30 Dec '13

hi, folks. this is a puzzle; it's something that has happened occasionally for years but now has become frequent enough to be an annoyance, and i do not know enough about the mechanisms involved even to begin to troubleshoot it. here's what happens: i am going merrily along and doing my work when i send an email message or go to a webpage and get errors that the host could not be found -- the usual dns error. when this happens i use the handy system settings network configurator and invariably discover that all the nameservers that i have listed are now gone. i presume that this application writes to /erc/resolv.conf (which is now a link to a resolv.conf someplace else, in /run/resolv.conf, which is heaven knows where but i suppose is one of those virtualized filesystems the boys are so proud of). anyway, i usually keep three domain nameservers there, just in case one goes down. something is causing them to disappear. i haven't fiddled with this stuff since resolv.conf was hard-coded such that you'd su root, edit /etc/resolv.conf, save the file, and be happy evermore. but now the file says not to edit it because it will be overwritten anyway. so. any guesses as to what might be making my list of nameservers disappear? that failing, any good recipe for troubleshooting it to see who is eating my nameservers? and if not that, is there anyplace i can put them so that they won't get overwritten? thanks very much and merry christmas, everybody! -- dep The shortest distance between you and playing great acoustic guitar: the great new instructional DVDs from Marjorie Thompson, available at www.MarjorieThompson.com

Trinity 3.5.13.2 on OS12.3, unresolved dependency
by Jagged O'Neill 27 Dec '13

27 Dec '13

High everyone, I have just installed Trinity from the binary repositories. I strictly followed the instructions on http://www.trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Documentation/OpenSUSEBinaryIns… but zypper complained about a missing dependency. I'd bet a lot that was the accessibility package, because I clearly remember that I thought "Heck, I'm not that disabled...". It downloaded everything, then installed everything (at least it looked like that). But I couldn't get it to run. There was no startkde, no starttde, no kwin, no twin, no whatever. But it certainly installed a lot of files in /opt. To let you have a figure without sending the whole ls-lR: $ du -sh /opt/* 61M /opt/kde3 377M /opt/trinity That was yesterday. Now before sending this email, I just called YaST to check back for the dependency message, which now is obviously altered to trinity-desktop-3.5.13.2-2.oss123.opt.noarch requires trinity-tdeaddons >= 3.5.13.2, but this requirement cannot be provided There is a package called trinity-kdeaddons in the repo, but its size is just 0 bytes; the corresponding debugsource seems healthy (3.4MiB). This is the same for trinity-tdeaccessibility (0 vs. 2.7MiB). Other zero-size packages (except the meta packages) are: - trinity-gwenview-i18n-debugsource - trinity-kaffeine-mozilla-debugsource - trinity-kstreamripper-debugsource - trinity-libqt3-jni-devel - trinity-libtrinity-jni-devel - trinity-python-trinity-debugsource - trinity-rosegarden-debugsource - trinity-smartcardauth-debugsource - trinity-tdeadmin - trinity-tdeartwork (though YaST shows it as installed, but also describes it as a meta package) - trinity-tdebindings (shown as installed) - trinity-tdebindings-devel - trinity-tdebindings-java (shown as installed) - trinity-tdebindings-xparts-extras - trinity-tdegames - trinity-tdegames-devel - trinity-tdemultimedia - trinity-tdepim - trinity-tdesdk - trinity-tdesdk-devel - trinity-tdeutils - trinity-tdewebdev That's what I've found; maybe I missed a few --- operating yast over a low bandwidth vnc is a bit clumsy. Now YaST shows 1058 packages overall; rpm -qa reports 168 packages (I didn't count those shown as installed in YaST), and I'm sure that the download contained of 223 individual files. I have no idea which of the packages didn't install due to unresolved dependencies, or which are simply not covered by the trinity-desktop meta package, but many things that I actually expected were not installed, like kwin/twin, startkde/starttde, etc. when trying to install trinity-twin, YaST shows the missing tdeaddons dependency again, referring to trinity-desktop, not trinity-twin. I select "break trinity-desktop-3.5.13.2-2.oss123.opt.noarch by ignoring some of its dependencies" actually selects twin for installation. I will see how far this will work. Most of the above zero-sized files are not that important, but I definitely want to have kicker. Anyway, I think it'd be great if this would be fixed. No need to do it today though :-) Have a merry X-mas, best regards and thanks in advance, Jagged

gui freeze.
by Felmon Davis 26 Dec '13

26 Dec '13

greetings! using Trinity Desktop, David Hare's exegnu, on Acer Aspire One 722 with kernel 3.2.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae. I can run Manjaro 3.9.4-1-xxx and Debian Trinity kernel 2.6.32-6-686 (also Hare's version) on this boxlet without a problem except I was fumbling with getting wifi started on the latter, thus the bright idea to up the kernel. (I can afford to 'play' on this machine.) the trouble is that booting into the gui causes touchpad and mouse to freeze at the login screen, requiring a reboot. I can boot via grub to the bash shell, get in as user and run 'sudo startx' or 'sudo kdm' and there's no problem. I've fished around but hoped someone would have a quick insight or fix. thanks. TDE on freshly installed Debian 7.3.0 issue...
by sp2lob 22 Dec '13

22 Dec '13

Hello all, I would like to install Trinity Desktop Environment release Wheezy [Debian 7.0] (v3.5.13.2) on freshly installed Debian 7.3.0 (by means of 3 DVD installation discs). Architecture is amd64 with 64GB RAM. Followed verbatim Debian Trinity Repository Installation Instructions. I'm stuck at the very beginning with following error message: root@deb:~# apt-get install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: kde-trinity : Depends: kde-core-trinity (>= 5:47) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. root@deb:~# I found some interesting posts on the list in regards of similar issue: http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::5093 But, my question is whether it got solved finally? At this stage of system I would not tamper unnecessarily, basically just to avoid new install. Could you please provide some guidance, how to overcome presented issue? Best regards. Tom - sp2lob

Itty-Bitty NIT
by johnsg＠dreamscape.com 19 Dec '13

19 Dec '13

Tis a nit about the website: To wit: In the list of Official Trinity Binaries we have Installation Instructions. And in those we have these really good, well written instructions, complete with the actual command line texts (thank you for those). But BUT BUUUT! The text in those gray boxes is so !@#$%^ small us old fogeys can't read it. And no, zooming in doesn't help (enough). It really looks elegent, but there is a certain degree of functional challenge here. Also, a lot of the lines seem to be close to the max length that the particular style can display without truncation. I recognize there are a bunch of tradeoffs here, so one possibility might be to have the HTML code repeat the grayed text above/below in a larger font? And yes this really is an itty-bitty nit. Thanks again for Trinity JohnSG

For the last couple of months I've been pestering developers to package KBibTex for Trinity. I just noticed it's in the repo. Now I can finally upgrade my old OpenSUSE to Debian - a big thank you to all developers for being responsive to user requests! Janek

. . . is there any quick and easy way, other than dragging and dropping, to put kmenu items (actually, submenu items) in alphabetical order? and possibly set it so that new items take their proper alphabetical place? packages seem to put themselves at the top of the list or else in its midst through some undiscernable formula. thanks in advance for advice in this regard. -- dep The shortest distance between you and great fingerstyle guitar playing? not serious, but certainly annoying
by dep 10 Dec '13

10 Dec '13

hi, people . . . hope all is well with one and all. i've meant to ask about this for a long time, and now as i wait for a print job to complete i have a chance. it is an annoying issue involving konqueror that i hope a little configuration tweak might fix. it has been around for multiple versions now. it's this: let us say that i am using konqueror to look at a directory. i see a pdf file that might be what i'm looking for. i click on it and it opens in the embedded pdf viewer. nope, wrong file. click the up arrow to get back to the directory. only now, it has gone from icon view to detailed list view. i have nothing against detailed list view. i use it often. but it is not welcome to insert itself whenever it feels like it. so, then, the question: how can i get it to remain in icon view after having looked at a pdf in the embedded viewer; else, how to i get it to forego the embedded viewer entirely in favor of some other pdf program, so i keep konqueror going in icon view? hope the question is understandable. thanks. best, -- dep The shortest distance between you and great fingerstyle guitar playing? Annoying Curser Problem
by David Bell 09 Dec '13

09 Dec '13

Greetings, I find that my curser jumps all over the place periodically whilst typing in Kmail. It used to happen whilst I used the Kmail, in various distros using KDE4, and seems to be present when I use Trinity with Ubuntu 12.04. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a remedy? Wireless connection in Trinity 3.5.13.2
by Lisi Reisz 08 Dec '13

08 Dec '13

I am having problems with the wireless connection in Trinity 3.5.13.2 My trusty wicd has just let me donw for the first time. KWiFiManager fares no better. The box is a laptop, and must be able to rove - and get connected when doing so. I can launch the connection manually, but it is for someone else and it is mission critical that she should be able to do one click, or at most two, and wireless is launched. What can I do to get this thing launching automatically? The wireless controller is an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG in a Dell Inspiron 9300. Ideas please! Lisi

The clock is telling the time reliably, but the date disappears when I reboot or shutdown and start again later. It is easy to persuade it to return, but this is not my laptop and I need it to Just Work. Any ideas, please? Lisi

amarok
by Dave 06 Dec '13

06 Dec '13

I've been checking out the amarok-3.5.13.2 package. What ever happened with the MYSQL integration since the 3.5.13 release? --and I tried to compile an older version 1.4.10 . It errors out with a KDE error ---- sounds like something else removed from KDE, or my bad setup. checking for KDE... configure: error: I can't find the designer plugins. These are required and should have been installed by kdelibs root [ /sources/amarok-1.4.10/build ]# Meanwhile, I know there was some releases in between 1.4 and 3.5.13. I'll look for one of them. amarok-trinity not updated by 3.5.13.2 on Debian/Wheezy
by Philip Ashmore 06 Dec '13

06 Dec '13

Hi there. I just successfully updated to 3.5.13.2 - go team! As it turns outthe upgrade wasn't a complete upgrade due to missing updated packages for Wheezy. I used apt-get update && apt-get upgrade as root. Here's what it said. The following packages have been kept back: amarok-engine-xine-trinity amarok-trinity kdeaddons-trinity kdeedu-trinity kdemultimedia-trinity kig-trinity libarts1-xine-trinity noatun-plugins-trinity It seems that amarok-common-trinity isn't available in 3.5.13.2 yet. Apologies in advance if you already know about this. Regards, Philip Ashmore

64 bit os12.2: nothing provides hal needed by trinity-desktop-3.5.13.2-2.oss122.opt.noarch
by Felix Miata 05 Dec '13

05 Dec '13

After hours and hours and hours since about 24 hours ago of futile attempts to get 12.1/KDE 4.9.5 upgraded to 12.2/4.10.5, including finally a fresh installation of 12.2, I finally just removed all traces of KDE4 and tried 'zypper -v in trinity-desktop', only to be stopped by $SUBJECT. :~( Zypper se -s hal produces nada except as irrelevant substring. Zypper se -s trinity lists 1127 packages. Apparently hal needs more appropriate mention on http://www.trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Documentation/OpenSUSEBinaryIns… ? Why 12.2 and not something newer?: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39949 Also in 12.3 and 13.1 there's this: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=833253 Why not KDE 4.11?: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=320561 I guess it's back to KDE3. No missing deps installing it. It even runs. :-p -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. changing default kmail browser
by dep 02 Dec '13

02 Dec '13

greetings, one and all . . . there is a setting someplace that i cannot find, and it is making me crazy. well, crazier. everywhere i can, i have set firefox as my default browser. but kmail won't listen. no matter what i do, when i click on a link in an email message, here comes konqueror, which is a great file manager and a terrible web browser. i very much hope that this behavior is not hardcoded. have set firefox as the default in the kde system settings through kcontrol (and the other places, such as konqueror configuration, where the same choice appears) and it seems to have taken -- everyplace except kmail, which is where it chiefly matters. anyone know where i can change this? thanks. -- dep The shortest distance between you and great fingerstyle guitar playing? by Paul Cartwright 25 Nov '13

I just tried to open Imagemagick in trinity and nothing happened. So I edited the menu, found the executable and ran it in a terminal. This is what it came back with: :~$ display.im6 display.im6: color is not known to server `FOREGROUND': No such file or directory @ error/xwindow.c/XGetPixelPacket/3064. I switched to Mate desktop and Imagemagick ran as normal.. So it is a trinity issue.. -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux User #367800 and new counter #561587

konquerorsu. Cannot write to files with kate, kwrite
by Nigel Henry 22 Nov '13

22 Nov '13

Binary install of 3.5.13.2 on Xubuntu Lucid 10.04 I'm having a problem writing to files with konquerorsu. It is started with (kdesudo -c 'konqueror --profile filemanagement') then requests password, then opens ok. I can create directories ok in the filesystem so it's obviously running as root, but I cannot save edited files, with kate, kwrite, and xfce's mousepad complaining about a permissions issue. I have no problems with konquerorsu on other distros by the way. I also started xfce's thunar from a shell with sudo thunar (on the TDE), and can save to files ok with that, so it's not some global problem about saving to files. Any suggestions as to how to resolve the problem? Thanks. Nigel.
