problem with Gwenview
by Uwe Brauer 15 Oct '12

15 Oct '12

Hello When I use konqueror to open a director which contains images, everything seems fine: the images are displayed as thumbnails. However when I click on a jpg file, the file is displayed, but with the following message displayed: There was an error loading the module Gwenview Image Viewer. The diagnostics is: can't open the module I have gwenview and gwenview-kde3 installed. Is this message serious? Thanks Uwe Brauer

Hi everybody, I am using Slavek's personal repository and it isn't fast like other european mirror. There was call for donation too. I think, I should be able to negotiated some server(s) inside Czech Technical University (http://www.siliconhill.cz/en/) that could by use as build, storage etc... Are you interested for this form of "donation"? I would be my way how to contribute to trinity... Regards Jiří Jánský

Crippling problem with KDevelop after upgrading to 3.5.13.1
by John A. Sullivan III 14 Oct '12

14 Oct '12

Hello, all. I am completely hobbled in KDevelop since upgrading to 3.5.13.1. On 3.5.12, all worked fine. Now, I cannot compile. Not being a heavy duty programmer, I am somewhat hampered in troubleshooting this but it has me stopped in my tracks at work. I added a new .ui file and it corresponding subclasses and tried to compile. It failed immediately with an error about tqt missing but I'm building a qt3 application. I ran distclean followed by automake and friends. When I run configure, I receive a warning about: checking if TQt is available... no configure: WARNING: You are attempting to compile Trinity without the Trinity Qt Interface installed. Please install libtqtinterface-dev and try again! I've checked and libtqtinterface-dev is installed. I don't know why it's even checking for TQt. When I try to build, I get: /usr/share/qt3/bin/moc /home/jsullivan/gitISCS/iscs/spm/src/acceptcadialog.h acceptcadialog.moc Qt meta object compiler moc: Too many input files specified Usage: moc [options] <header-file> -o file Write output to file rather than stdout -f[file] Force #include, optional file name -p path Path prefix for included file -i Do not generate an #include statement -k Do not stop on errors -nw Do not display warnings -v Display version of moc make[2]: *** [acceptcadialog.moc] Error 1 make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make: *** [all] Error 2 *** Exited with status: 2 *** What is going on here? Is there a bug where the output file in the moc command is not being preceded with a -o? I also thought it a bad indication when I checked my Qt Options for the project and the Qt3 directory was set to /usr and in glaring red (meaning it is not a valid qt3 directory). I changed it back to /usr/share/qt3 but it is still showing as red. I'm very badly stuck on a major project so all help is deeply appreciated. Thanks - John

Problem with new Qt3 Widget in KDevelop
by John A. Sullivan III 13 Oct '12

13 Oct '12

Hello, all. I've recently upgraded from TDE 3.5.12 to 3.5.13.1 on Debian Squeeze but I do not know if this problem was introduced with that upgrade. I am working on a regular Qt3 application (yes, I know I need to upgrade it) inside of KDevelop and created a new Qt3 Dialog by right clicking in the Automake Manager and creating a new file. I then tried to open it in Qt Designer and it refused to open. Here is the .ui file it initially created: <!DOCTYPE UI><UI version="3.1" stdsetdef="1"> <class>Form1</class> <widget class=TQDIALOG_OBJECT_NAME_STRING> <property name="name"> <cstring>Form1</cstring> </property> <property name="geometry"> <rect> <x>0</x> <y>0</y> <width>600</width> <height>480</height> </rect> </property> <property name="caption"> <string>Form1</string> </property> </widget> <layoutdefaults spacing="6" margin="11"/> </UI> I then manually edited using another QDialog as a template so that it reads: <!DOCTYPE UI><UI version="3.3" stdsetdef="1"> <class>RadioButtonVariableDlg</class> <widget class="QDialog"> <property name="name"> <cstring>RadioButtonVariableDlg</cstring> </property> <property name="geometry"> <rect> <x>0</x> <y>0</y> <width>600</width> <height>480</height> </rect> </property> <property name="caption"> <string>SPM - Choice Dialog</string> </property> </widget> <layoutdefaults spacing="6" margin="11"/> </UI> and that opens. It was not just a matter of changing <widget class=TQDIALOG_OBJECT_NAME_STRING> to <widget class=QDialog> as I tried that. It appears that the magic change is changing <widget class=TQDIALOG_OBJECT_NAME_STRING> to <widget class="QDialog"> (N.B. the quotation marks around QDialog). Thanks - John

Changing bugzilla behaviour
by Janek S. 13 Oct '12

13 Oct '12

Each time I enter Trinity's bugzilla it takes a lot of time to load the front page because all unresolved bugs are displayed. When I log in I am once again redirected to the same page, which causes it to be reloaded. It's a bit of annoying because it actually takes quite a lot of time to display all the bugs and I imagine it also puts unnecessary load on the server. My usual use-case is: log in to bugzilla and then report a new bug or view list of my bugs. This means that these two huge queries to bugzilla could be safely ommited. Can this behaviuor be changed? Trinity's release model
by Janek S. 12 Oct '12

12 Oct '12

After upgrading to 3.5.13.1 and getting a bunch of new bugs introduced I started thinking it might be a good idea to release new packages continously as changes are made to the code, instead of doing a big release once every few months. I realize there are some major changes going on in the code and they cannot be released partially. Still I think that thanks to git's branching and merging capabilities it should be possible to merge some smaller changes and bugfixes into master and release them as update. Woludn't that be an easier way to track new bugs introduced to the code? Instead of getting a whole load of bug reports after a major release, bugs would be reported as they appear and would be easier to track down to conrete packages and changes made in the code. Janek

Precise depends on libexiv2 from Quetzal
by Tony Rein 11 Oct '12

11 Oct '12

Hi. I just installed gwenview-trinity (only KDE3 program I use) from the latest trinity update. I got it to work, but one of the dependencies is libexiv2-12, which is newer than the libexiv2 in the Ubuntu Precise repositories. I had to manually install libexiv2-12 from Quetzal, which I downloaded from packages.ubuntu.com Tony

Keyboard in Trinity and K*-trinity applications in LXDE
by Lisi Reisz 08 Oct '12

08 Oct '12

I am running: Trinity 3.5.13 updated with Slavek's patches Squeeze LXDE installed and used when essential I have just run aptitude update. There were no upgrades. There were 2 yesterday. My keyboard has disappeared in Trinity. There is obviously nothing wrong with the keyboard(s), both PS2 and USB, both of which I have tried, or the connection to the motherboard, since keyboards work in the BIOS, gdm and LXDE. This situation is made worse for me by the fact that k*-trinity applications, with the exception of Konqueror, will not run in LXDE. There is no KWrite, and I do not find Nano a long term acceptable substitute, and I can run neither KMail nor Amarok. Not only are these applications not in the menu, they will not run in the console, with error message "command not found". What have I done to upset Trinity?? And how do I persuade it to function for me again?? There is obviously a problem with my imported home. Other people for whom I have installed Trinity, but who had little or no previous data, have ridden off into the sunset. But what problem, where? Lisi

Matlab does not start, only as root.
by Uwe Brauer 04 Oct '12

04 Oct '12

Hello I just installed Kubuntu 10.04 on a different machine and then trinity. Everything went smooth, also my matlab installation went fine. Then I installed kscreensaver-kde3 (I am now on a different machine and don't have all the details) kscreensaver-xsavers-extra-kde3 kscreensaver-xsavers-kde3 and the trouble started, finally I had to do a sudo dpkg -i --force-all /var/cache/apt/archives/kscrensaver-Idont-the details.deb But the installation proceeded, but after that, I could only run matlab as root, otherwise I got a segmentation fault. When I use KDE4 Everything is fine. I repeated the matlab installation and the problem remains. Any idea? (Otherwise I have to reinstall the whole beast I am afraid) Thanks Uwe

Amarok question
by Janek S. 03 Oct '12

Is there a way to extract information about currently played song from Amarok? I would like to create a plugin for tmux-powerline [1] that displays currently played song on the status bar. I know there were plugins for Kadu IM that changed users status to show current song, so this is possible. The question is can this be achieved from bash level or does it require a library call? Installing Trinity on Squeeze: problem with recommends
by Lisi 02 Oct '12

02 Oct '12

Hello all :-) I am doing a fresh install of Trinity, on a fresh install of Debian Squeeze, which so far has no GUI installed. After I issue: aptitude install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity I get a list of 165 recommends and the question: do you accept this solution? Well, I think that there are 165, but the first that I can currently see is number 147. Having dismally failed to find a way to see what I am being asked to agree to, I decided to accept all recommends, which might at least reduce the number of things on the screen and let me see what else, if anything, aptitude is telling me. (Oh, I do miss konsole!) So I did: aptitude -r install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity That made no difference at all. Still a problem, still 165 recommends (as far as I can see), still: do you accept this solution? And I still don't know what "solution" it is recommending. It might be suggesting _removing_ 165 packages. So, in case I had gone bonkers and got the order wrong I tried: aptitude install -r desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity Same result. :-( I am fresh out of ideas. I have had enough physical problems building this computer, without software problems as well. :-( Help! (And thank you, of course) Lisi

Kmail in TrinityDE 3.5.12, restoring from KDE 3.5.10
by Lisi Reisz 02 Oct '12

02 Oct '12

I am restoring my KMail details from Lenny with KDE 3.5.10 to Squeeze with TDE 3.5.13, patched with Slávek's patches. I have copied .kde/share/apps/kmail from my backup to .trinity/share/apps/kmail. It wasn't a success. The klauncher didn't do anything. (At least, it probably did, but I have no way of knowing what!!) I then launched it by various methods, which are self explanatory. Finally, I launched it from the menu, and got the backtrace (or lack of it) below. It's pretty obvious that I have copied something across during the restauration that has gummed up the works. But how do I find out what? Or should I simply delete all the files that are there and start again, but if so, how? I gummed up kdm-trinity as well, but have managed to sort that out via Google. This one I am failing with. Once I get this installation going I'll try to be trouble-free, or at least quiet, for some time! :-( root@Tux-II:/home/lisi# kmail Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed WeaverThreadLogger: thread (ID: 3) suspended. A general question about Trinity
by Janek S. 02 Oct '12

Dear list, Yesterday I decided to install latest openSUSE (12.2) on one of my laptops. Suse provides KDE3 repositories, though I know not everything went smooth with these builds in the past. I started in the morning and after spending whole day on installing, configuring and solving problems I realized that I'm not even halfway finished! The problem is that KDE3 is not being updated to work with some system services and thus many features just don't work out of the box, e.g. unmounting of auto-mounted drives or adding new internet connections to NetworkManager (I suspect polkit to be the culprit). In desperation I installed KDE4, since I need a working computer, but now I'm trying to figure out what to do next. I am considering switching to Debian or Ubuntu (though there are no packages for 12.04 LTS!) so I can install Trinity. I am worried however that I might encounter similar problems as with KDE. So my big question is: does Trinity provide all these basic fetures like automounting, network management etc. out-of-the-box or does it require to spend a lot of time to configure the system? Jan

Recommended upgrade path?
by Laws, Peter C. 28 Sep '12

28 Sep '12

I have a system at home running Kubuntu 10.10 (maverick) running Trinity before it was actually Trinity (3.5.12 - packages are all *-kde3). What is the best way to update this to a more modern version of Ubuntu, say 12.04 LTS? Same question for my work system, but it's at 11.04/Natty Narwhal with Trinity 3.5.13. My days as a Solaris admin tell me (scream at me) "don't do an upgrade, do a fresh install!", but I think I'd rather not. -- Peter Laws / N5UWY National Weather Center / Network Operations Center University of Oklahoma Information Technology plaws(a)ou.edu (Remote) College of Architecture, Regional and City Planning, MRCP '16

Simple kmail reset?
by ant 26 Sep '12

26 Sep '12

My parents, who are a bit visually impaired (and in their 90s), have managed (somehow) to wipe out some bits of kmail, probably by dragging bits of window edges around. It's a bit difficult to discover, because I can't easily get to their computer, because they live a long way away, so any reset instructions will have to be given by telephone. Is there any easy way (see above) of setting kmail back to its default appearance without losing settings such as server type/passwords/filters? Since they are using imap, I guess that folder lists will be ok. cheers ant -- Sent from my linux system running Debian 6, desktop trinity-KDE. This email is plain text, not HTML. Trinity not shutting down properly
by Lisi 25 Sep '12

Trinity on my new box sometimes starts shutting down and then hangs. I have tried giving it time, but once it has hung, I can leave it for several hours without movement. The file system does not appreciate it whne I use the on/off button or the reset button. My system is: Debian Squeeze Trinity 3.5.13 with Slavek's patches GA-Z77-DS3H motherboard / on 64 GB SATA SSD /home on SATA 2TB drive Where do I go from here? Thanks, Lisi

Unsubscribe threat
by Lisi 24 Sep '12

24 Sep '12

Hi, all, I have just received an email from the ezmlm program managing the trinity-users(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net mailing list. It is threatening to unsubscribe me if messages from me to someone I have never heard of, who is presumably getting the emails because he is subscribed to this list, bounce again. Below is some of the header. I don't want to be summarily unsubscribed, and don't understand what I can do about it anyway, given that it is not my email address that is bouncing anything, so far as I can see. But I am not good with headers. So - what can I do to be allowed to continue on this list? Lisi --- Enclosed is a copy of the bounce message I received. Klauncher could not be reached via DCOP. I *need* Klauncher :-(
by Lisi 19 Sep '12

19 Sep '12

I had an apparently working system, so I decided to take a deep breath, cross my fingers and install Slávek's patches. All appeared to go swimmingly. But now if I try to launch almost anything via Klauncher I get the message above. Application names preceded by kdesu appear to launch without a problem. Klauncher was working well before I installed the patches. Yes, daft, I know, not to leave well alone, when I had an operational system. But I fancied having the patches. I work almost entirely via Klauncher. The fact that they have messed around with Klauncher is one of the many things I dislike about KDE4. Is there an easy solution? Or shall I just reinstall and stop at 3.5.13 without patches? :-( I am NOT giving up. I have been pig-headed since I was a baby. It is bit late to change now. Lisi

gtk-based apps, trinity and gtk-qt-engine-trinity
by Nicolas Bercher 18 Sep '12

18 Sep '12

Hi, I use gtk-qt-engine-trinity on a Debian Squeeze to have gtk-based apps look like qt3 ones. But I encounter "repaint" issues using some gtk based apps but not all of them. For example, iceweasel (firefox), openoffice.org have severe bugs that make menu entries (oo.org) or tabs to disappear (all painted in gray). More precisely: correct graphics appears as appropriate but disappears when the mouse leaves the graphical pane of tabs, menu items, etc. I use iceweasel 7.0.1 and openoffice.org 3.2.1. Is there any fix to this applicable for me? Nicolas

Upgrade report, Debian Squeeze amd64 3.5.12 to 3.5.13.1
by Nick Leverton 18 Sep '12

18 Sep '12

Thanks for a lot of work on these packages everyone, but especially Slavek :) Nothing to report on the installation, upgraded smooth as silk. However I've a couple of issues, one is in the logs. Apparently kdm on login is trying to update /etc/qt3/qt_plugins_3.3rc but has already dropped permissions. This might be the source of another issue I have with black backgrounds on some window elements. I'd like to know what other people's qt_plugins_3.3rc looks like. This upgrade machine is missing all but plastik which doesn't seem right. The one on my normal desktop lists most but not all of the .so files in /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/plugins. How should the file get updated normally, please ? Kernel is 3.2 and graphics driver is Nvidia 295. This is what /etc/qt3/qt_plugins_3.3rc says post-upgrade (I think I told dpkg to replace it when it queried but am not sure). $ cat /etc/qt3/qt_plugins_3.3rc [opt] trinity/lib/trinity/plugins/styles/plastik.so=30300^e3^ex86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config^e2012-08-04T18:53:43^e [usr] lib/qt3/plugins/imageformats/libqmng.so=30300^e3^ex86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config^e2012-08-04T16:21:10^e lib/qt3/plugins/inputmethods/libqimsw-multi.so=30300^e3^ex86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config^e2012-08-04T16:21:10^e lib/qt3/plugins/inputmethods/libqimsw-none.so=30300^e3^ex86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config^e2012-08-04T16:21:10^e lib/qt3/plugins/inputmethods/libqsimple.so=30300^e3^ex86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config^e2012-08-04T16:21:10^e lib/qt3/plugins/inputmethods/libqxim.so=30300^e3^ex86_64 Linux g++-4.* full-config^e2012-08-04T16:21:10^e lib/trinity/plugins/styles/plastik.so=30306^e3^ei686 Linux g++-4.* full-config^e2006-09-29T20:06:31^e This is the first few lines of the user .xsession-errors: Xsession: X session started for leveret at Sun Aug 5 18:47:01 CEST 2012 /usr/bin/xmodmap: unable to open file '/usr/share/apps/kxkb/ubuntu.xmodmap' for reading /usr/bin/xmodmap: 1 error encountered, aborting. gpg-agent[3918]: enabled debug flags: assuan [startkde] Starting startkde. Major problems installing Trinity 3.5.13 with Slavek's repository on Fresh install of Squeeze
by Lisi 17 Sep '12

17 Sep '12

I have frequently installed Trinity before, 3.5.11, 3.5.12, 3.5.13, 3.5.13 with Slavek's repositories. I have never had a problem before. I am getting desperate. I am running 3.5.10 on Lenny on my working m/c at the moment, and the system is sickly. I *need* a working box. And I *need* KMail in order to have continued access to my emails. I have been trying for hours over several days to install on a newbuild. I have posted before about the problems I had initially. When I installed desktop-base-trinity separately it went on without a hitch. I can find no way of installing kde-trinity. Having tried for hours to install kde-trinity from where I had got to, I gave in and installed LXDE. I immediately gained a functioning LXDE. I have installed from inside LXDE frequently in the past. I have installed with Slavek's repositories already enabled in the past. Having got my functioning LXDE, I again tried to install kde-trinity. Again no success. Exactly the same result as before. I installed some of the missing packages manually, but most of them refused to install. I have just tried again, and this time I got a shorter, and therefore legible, list of problems, but most of the unresolved dependencies were virtual packages and refused to install. The only thing that I can think of to try now is to do a default install of Squeeze, get Gnome 3 (yuk!) and try to install from there. Any better ideas? All suggestions welcomed. Lisi

KLaptop won't suspend or hibernate anymore
by Dan Youngquist 15 Sep '12

When I try to suspend from the KLaptop system tray icon, it goes to the "Desktop Session Locked" dialog box, and sits there forever without suspending. But KPowersave will suspend just fine. This started when I ran updates yesterday morning; worked fine before that. Tried an older kernel, no difference. Any ideas? I can switch to KPowersave if there's no solution, but I prefer KLaptop. New firefox releases freeze up
by Jeff Taylor 07 Sep '12

07 Sep '12

I'm running trinity on Natty, and have been getting the newest version of Firefox, but am unable to run them. The latest version that is remotely usable for me is 12.0. Beginning with the upgrade to v13, when I restarted firefox, it brought up the screen asking if I wanted to restore my tabs, to which I clicked the restore button. I then see the window fill up with my previous tabs, and that's as far as firefox gets. "Top" does not show FF using any resources. If I minimize the screen, then restore it, it takes about 30 seconds for the window to be redrawn. None of the tabs ever load up, and I eventually have to just kill the process. Next I try starting FF in safe-mode. This gives the same results. Finally, I try creating a clean profile. From here I am able to get a start page loaded, but if I try to use the browser, it will allow me to type for a couple seconds, then freezes for about 30 seconds. It continues this cycle for as long as I keep the window open. During the freezes, I have no problems accessing any other programs on my desktop. I have tried the same process with FF14, and just tonight with FF15. I have continued to have the same results. While using FF12, I can mostly use the browser, however on random occasions I will get the same type of window-freeze... FF completely stops responding, even though the CPU usage does not change, and anywhere between 30 second to a few minutes later, FF will start responding again. These seem to happen once or twice an hour, but otherwise the browser works as expected. I have tried disabling plugins, but it did not change the behavior. I'm hoping someone here has seen this issue and might be able to point me to a solution? As a side-note, my wife's computer has been loaded with the same Trinity setup. She is currently running FF13 and not having any issues, and since I did not find any notes on Google, I assume this issue is specific to my computer... I just don't know where to begin troubleshooting desktop issues.

Trinity on Wheezy
by Lisi 06 Sep '12

06 Sep '12

Hello, all :-) I am building a computer on which I would like to run Wheezy, but with Trinity DE, of course. Is this a feasible ambition given a) my technical ability (or lack of it!!) and b) the existence of you lot? If so, should I, in your estimation, go for a 3.5.14 daily build or stick to 3.5.13.1? Or would it be more sensible to stick to Squeeze? Thanks! Lisi

3.5.13-sru krusader mount manager
by harrow 04 Sep '12

04 Sep '12

Hello. I use 3.5.13-sru on Archlinux (x86_64). I use krusader mostly and I prefer to mount/umount external storages with krusader (Ctrl+M combobox , under proto/address/path line ). It's ok with usb-storage with FAT. But with usb-storage with ntfs it has some troubles. I've merged rules into hal policy *.fdi to use ntfs-3g and mounting process became ok. But trying to unmount I've get error that operation is not allowed. It seems that i'ts indeed krusader's mount manager fail , because konqueror does unmount well the same mounted storage (from media:/ window). Is this distro-specific bug ? How can I fix it ?

TDE Sound System / Notifications - not working
by Mike Howard 31 Aug '12

31 Aug '12

Hi All, As I've done numerous times in the past, I've built & installed TDE from source (git) but this time, system notifications don't work for me when attempting to use the 'TDE sound system'. Sound works. I can play sound files from the command line and if I select an external player, say gst123, in the 'System Notifications' configuration dialogue box I can hear the configured notification sounds. But if I use the default setting of 'Use the TDE sound system' I hear nothing. Additionally, if I set the notification to 'Display a messagebox' or 'Log to file' or 'Print to standard error output' I get nothing from there either. Going to Settings -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System and playing there makes no difference. 'Test sound' does not produce any output, toggling Enable makes no difference, selecting Autodetect or Alsa makes no difference. 'artsd' is running and does get restarted if and when settings are changed. Anybody experienced anything similar? Mike. -- Any question is easy if you know the answer!

kmail on headless debian
by Dexter Filmore 28 Aug '12

28 Aug '12

I just setup a VM to run a headless debian and kmail. The idea is to ssh -X into that deb VM and forward kmail to whatever OS I'm in, so sorta poor man's mail server. I just installed debian without desktop task, then added trinity repos and installed kmail-trinity. Calling /opt/....kmail however nothing at all happens. Do I need to install a full trinity after all or at least to install a base .trinity folder...? -- -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.12 GCS d--(+)@ s-:+ a C++++ UL++ P+>++ L+++>++++ E-- W++ N o? Kmahjongg error
by Ed Hurst 27 Aug '12

Running Trinity on Scientific Linux 6, just installed today. When I attempt to launch Kmahjongg, I get a message: "KMahjongg could not locate the file: or the default file of type: tqlayout KMahjongg will now terminate" So I click "OK" and get another: "An error occurred when loading the board tqlayout KMahjongg will now terminate." Then it launches with an empty field, no tiles, and can't load any games. Is there something I can do to fix this? Sending with kmail 3.5.13.1
by jc 27 Aug '12

27 Aug '12

Hi For sending with kmail I have to select the "via" each time whether from the addon to the uparrow icon in the composer window or subsequently from the File > Send queued messages > via. How do I set it to just click on up arrow icon in composer window and have it sent from outbox, just have one sending account. I don't remember any problem setting that way before and single click send is the habit of quite a few years. In Configure - Accounts - Setup for sending and receiving messages Confirm before send is unchecked Send messages in outbox folder "on all mail checks" Default send method "send now" Have to do the File > Send queued messages > via thing even afer several mail checks or it stays in the outbox

A Simple-Safe Way to Retrofit Your System from KDE4 to Trinity (Almost)
by Joseph Thames 25 Aug '12

25 Aug '12

Hi Timothy, I'm new to your list, and I am thrilled there is a Trinity fork. I retreated from the bleeding edge of Fedora 8 and then Kubuntu 9.04 three years ago to Centos 5.5 because of the KDE4 nightmare. Linux had become a chaotic minefield of cosmetic frenzy with no functionality leadership anymore and KDE3 was the last hope of stable continuity. Now to take my whole new terrace of application technology <http://www.metacalculus.com> to a new cloud server I had provisioned a Centos 6.2 VPS. Oops, the RedHat/Centos crowd has followed the cosmetic herd to KDE4. So I thought maybe I'd give it another try. Silly me. When I tried to move my desktop apps from Centos 5.5, I realized I would have to rebuild my whole interface. Screw that. So I started looking for an alternative, and I found you guys. Unfortunately, I had already installed moved all my Perl infrastructure with an upgrade to perl 5.10.1, Postgresql 8.4, PHP 5.3 etc. so I could install RT4, Mojolicious, Dancer, WordPress, and Drupal7. i had already done all that before I looked at mapping my KDE desktop apps to the plasma swamp. So, now dreading the uninstall of KDE4 and install of Trinity on this otherwise loaded server, I thought I might have a way of getting above it all, using Yumex. And it almost worked. I've never been a big fan of Gnome, but have used it occasionally. So I used Yumex to install Gnome, and then logged-in to Gnome with the intention of using Yumex to selectively remove all the KDE4 packages, except those shared by KDE and Gnome. It worked almost. Here is the scheme: Buried deep down in the Centos website, there is a section on RedHat/Fedora Trinity Repository Installation Instructions: cd /etc/yum.repos.d wget http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity/rpm/el6/trinity-… So I did that, and the Yumex packages window now had all the trinitiy packages, which I could check to have installed. But first I had to remove KDE4: *Yumex Pass 1 - Remove KDE4* 1. In Package window, click *Installed* radio button, 2. Search for 'KDE', which will fill the window with all installed packages that KDE employs, in green text, 3. Click on each one in which the rhs description says is part of KDE, this will respond with the garbage can icon so you no it is set to be deleted. 4. Be sure not to check packages used by both Gnome and KDE, like Xorg-x11-server.Xorg or htdig. But if you are unsure, Yum will detect the errors in its dependency check and print errors in red in the output, refusing to continue, because you are proposing to delete packages that remaining packages depend upon. 5. Click Apply to start Yum processing. If no errors appear, you can allow Yumex to continue to delete all of the KDE4 packages. *Yumex Pass 2 - Install Trinity* 1. In Package window, click Available Radio Buttion; 2. Search on 'trinity', which will fill the Package window with all of the Trinity packages; 3. Review the list and their descriptions, and check all the ones you need; 4. Click Apply to start installing Trinity. Ok, this got past the dependency check and all of the downloads, then I got: 13:48:06 : YUM: Running rpm_check_debug 13:48:13 : ERROR: Error in yum Transaction : Test Transaction Errors: file /usr/lib/debug/opt/trinity/lib/trinity/kcm_displayconfig.so.debug conflicts between attempted installs of trinity-tdebase-debuginfo-3.5.13-27.el6.opt.i686 and trinity-guidance-debuginfo-0.8.0svn20080103-3.el6.opt.i686 13:48:13 : YUM: file /usr/lib/debug/opt/trinity/bin/kuickshow.debug conflicts between attempted installs of trinity-tdegraphics-debuginfo-3.5.13-6.el6.opt.i686 and trinity-kuickshow-debuginfo-0.8.13-4.el6.opt.i686 13:48:13 : YUM: file /usr/lib/debug/opt/trinity/lib/libkdeinit_kuickshow.so.debug conflicts between attempted installs of trinity-tdegraphics-debuginfo-3.5.13-6.el6.opt.i686 and trinity-kuickshow-debuginfo-0.8.13-4.el6.opt.i686 13:48:13 : YUM: file /usr/lib/debug/opt/trinity/lib/trinity/kuickshow.so.debug conflicts between attempted installs of trinity-tdegraphics-debuginfo-3.5.13-6.el6.opt.i686 and trinity-kuickshow-debuginfo-0.8.13-4.el6.opt.i686 So, since I'm not expecting to have to debug anything, I went back into the package window and uncheck all the "debuginfo" packages I had previously check. This time TDE installed without a hitch. But now I am unable to connect using NX into Gnome. It acts like what was described in the #bug985202 discussion. How do I configure my NX client to startup TDE TIA -- Joseph 'Bear' Thames MetaCalculus, LLC and Meta Science Foundation (505) 977-9024 - Cell Phone beartham(a)gmail.com

Puzzling problems with printing and scanning in Trinity 3.5.13 with Slavko's repositories added.
by Lisi 21 Aug '12

21 Aug '12

Hi all! I have had the following cris de coeur from the user of a computer that I administer. "The old system" means Debian Lenny with KDE 3.5.10, which is still there on a separate partition and can be booted into from Grub. I had previously successfully installed Debian Squeeze with Trinity 3.5.12 on his wife's laptop without a problem, and it is running well, including printing and scanning. The installation for the wife was from scratch and there was nothing to restore. The husband had a lot to restore. The printer and scanner form part of an aio, a Lexmark Interact C605. The initial problem with the printer was that when I came to install it on a 64 bit system (Lenny had been 32 bit) I found that the driver was only available in a 32 bit version. I found a 64 bit driver - not on Lexmark's site, of course :-( - and all seemed to be well. The story carries on below in emails from the owner of the machines. I am baffled as to how a driver can work one minute and not the next. :-( I do hope that I haven't managed to install some sort of malware masquerading as a driver. 12/08/07 (yy/mm/dd) <quote> We still have some snags with the new system I'm afraid. 1)The scanner will not work although it still does in the old system so I know the scanner is working OK. 2)The printer works from e-mail OK except that it will not print attachments which are in PDF although I can read them aok. </quote> 12/08/16 <quote> The printer which was working aok in the new system (apart from pdf format)has now ceased to function completely again although it is working still in the old system. </quote> His wife can still print from her laptop. I had expected to find that the problem with the scanner was a matter of groups and permissions, but it would appear not; or anyhow, not entirely. Any suggestions for solutions, other than reinstall with 32 bit and Trinity 3.5.12, gratefully received. Though this is beginning to look like the only viable solution. I ought, of course, to have checked, before I abandoned 32 bit, that all the necessary drivers were available in 64 bit. :-( Thanks, Lisi

Can't mount ecryptfs home dir, can log in as unencrypted user
by Patricia J Hawkins 18 Aug '12

18 Aug '12

Hi all, This is largely a heads up, as everything is half-working, and I think I see the solution on the DOWN UNTIL 7PM canonical forums. No mouse, have emacs but emacs is currently NOT pasting to the system clipboard; email isn't setup in emacs under this user, and I won't be taking the time to fix just now. So, no cut & paste. Sorry (and ARRRGHHH!) I'm usually phawkins <phawkins(a)connact.com>@ <phawkins(a)connact.com> connact.com <phawkins(a)connact.com>, but temporarily subscribed via gmail. I updated Aug 15 and 17; the logout suspend option, which hadn't been in my logout menu since the last major upgrade, appeared as of 8/15; I've been using suspend since then; suspended last night, May not be relevant, did not see any suspend-type errors. I couldn't log in this morning as my usual ecryptfs-home self; just got a gray screen; rebooted multiple times, finally got a trinity login screen; got .Iceauthority errors, couldn't log in as usual usr (pjh) even under xfce; logged in as an unecrypted user; it's all working as it should except my touchpad is not working (Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop) and I seem to have never copied over my usual emacs setup stuff (argh.) Mouse: looking at the error files, could just be that I haven't logged into this user since before I was on Trinity (was kde3) and something didn't translate correctly. Or could be related to the other issue, see below. Ecryptfs: Was able to sudo -u pjh but couldn't mount usual /home/pjh via ecryptfs-recover-private or ecryptfs-mount-private; googling on the error ("open: No such file or directory") implicates /dev/shm (or /run/shm) and upgrade issues with that; Google shows me CONSIDERABLE discussion on the temporarily inaccessible ubuntu forums; one or two tweaks for other systems (adding mount for /dev/shm or /run/shm to fstab) don't work. I'm going to go off and practice my fiddle for this afternoon's morris gig at the Providence, RI Waterfire. See Red Herring Morris on the web. Thanks all! Am on Ubuntu 11.10 using the generic ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net<http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity> /trinity <http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity> sources in sources.iist, plus trinity-builddeps; have all the usual ubuntu sources plus us.archive.ubuntu.com; am not currently using slavek-banko sources, maybe I should. Good grief, couldn't get to the Gmail send button using tab key in firefox, had to save a draft & send from my phone. Enough!

Mandriva RPMs
by Tim Williams 18 Aug '12

On 02/08/2012 19:34, Francois Andriot >wrote: > Hello, > after the Mageia 2 build, here are the Mandriva 2011.0 packages for TDE 3.5.13 (I've built up to tdebase for now). > Note: you should remove any previous packages from other repositories, in case you already had (I've already seen some attempts to build TDE on Mandriva 2011 in the mailing list). That was probably me, my packages are still available if anybody wants them. The core stuff in my packages works OK, but I had a lot of trouble with the extras failing for various reasons and I've not had enough time to look at this for several months. However, I've now had a quick look at Francois's packages, which are are definite improvement on my own efforts. I have had the following problems though (using the X86_64 build) : 1 - I have had a lot of trouble getting the TDE option to appear on the login managers session menu. As far as I can tell this is because the /etc/X11/dm/Sessions/45TDE.desktop file isn't being reliably generated/installed. Do the files in /etc/X11/dm/Sessions/ get generated after installation nothing in this folder appears to exist in any of the RPM packages? I ended up writing my own 45TDE.desktop file to fix this so that I could log in. 2 - Konsole doesn't get added to the menu after installation. 3 - Most of the applets on the panel failed to load when logging in as a user an existing .trinity directory (a clean user was OK). This was easily solved by manually adding them again though. 4 - A number of the menus on the K menu were empty after the upgrade, when looking at them in kmenuedit, these menus had been given a "KDE3" submenu, which was also empty. Deleting this KDE submenu and saving would then cause the original menu entries to magically re-appear. Odd... Hi All, I not having much luck with responses at the moment but here goes .... :) The pkg-config file (tdelibs.pc) installed when building tdelibs from git appears incomplete. There is no version stanza (easily fixable), Libs: stanza or Cflags stanza. If the Libs: and Cflags stanzas should be there (which I assume they should), what should the contain? [sort of OT] Trinity etc. are damaging Linux
by Lisi 14 Aug '12

14 Aug '12

I was at a local LUG meeting today and was very distressed that the above view should be expressed, and forcefully. I found it distressing because that is quite some allegation - that we and Mate users and Cinnamon users etc., (all splinter groups) are actually damaging Linux, doing it harm. The fact that we are free to digress and disagree is why I like open source so much. Take away that freedom and we might as well all use Windows. It seemed to me a quite extraordinary allegation. And as I say, I found it personally upsetting. Since Linux without its freedom would not be Linux, nothing would seem to me more terminally harmful to Linux than to destroy that freedom. I am a congenital maverick. I claim the right to remain a maverick and to swim against the tide as much as I like! Lisi

openSuSE & TDE
by Thierry de Coulon 13 Aug '12

13 Aug '12

As no version of Debian would accept my setup on a Laptop, I installed openSuSE (12.1, 64bit). I had left SuSE some years ago because of KDE 4, now I discover that not only have they gone back to Grub Legacy, but there is a one-click install of KDE 3.5 available. Seems the Attachmate ownership rather brings good things... Now, considering that TDE is now a "better" KDE 3.x, will we be seing TDE in the openSuSE reprositories? Thierry

TDE 3.5.13 test build for Mageia 2
by François ANDRIOT 09 Aug '12

09 Aug '12

Hello, As a Mageia 2 user, I found annoying not to have any usable TDE version. So, I built myself some TDE packages for Mageia 2. These are based on the Redhat packages, which were slightly updated to work on Mageia. For end-user, it means that TDE is already very usable, since it has all updates that Fedora/RHEL already has. For maintainer (me, I guess), it's now possible to build TDE for all RHEL/Fedora/Mageia distributions with an unique procedure. I guess that adding support for Mandriva 2011 will be easy too, since these distributions are very close. For now, I've built tdebase only. To install it on Mageia 2 (x86_64 only, no i386): First, add the repositories: urpmi.addmedia tde-3.5.13-x86_64 http://trinity.mangafrance.com/mga2/trinity-3.5.13/RPMS/x86_64/ urpmi.addmedia tde-3.5.13-noarch http://trinity.mangafrance.com/mga2/trinity-3.5.13/RPMS/noarch/ urpmi.addmedia tde-extras-x86_64 http://trinity.mangafrance.com/mga2/trinity-extras/RPMS/x86_64/ Then, install the tdebase package: urpmi trinity-tdebase And there you go. You should be able to choose a new "TDE" se ssssion in your favorite DM (GDM, KDM, or anything else). Francois

where is kcm gtk

I installed my first Debian (6.05) in many years a few days ago. Then I added TDE repos to apt sources and installed TDE and set its DM as default. Now I'm in TDE settings looking for a KControl-style way to make GTK apps use KDE fonts, and there isn't one I can find. I looked for a kcm package with dpkg, and had no luck. 3.5.11 -> 3.5.13.1 Confusion

I'm running a Trinty 3.5.13.1 system that I upgraded from Trinity kde3 Trinity 3.5.11 to/through 3.5.12 -- on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I have a need to mess around with kdeglobals and I discovered this: jonesy@nix4:~/.kde3/share/config$ ls -ol `locate kdeglobals` | grep jonesy -rw------- 1 jonesy 7333 2012-05-23 17:29 /home/jonesy/.kde3/share/config/kdeglobals -rw------- 1 jonesy 8744 2012-08-01 20:01 /home/jonesy/.trinity/share/config/kdeglobals jonesy@nix4 May of this year is about when I did the Trinity upgrade. Is the /home/jonesy/.kde3/ merely detrius leftover from upgrading from Trinity kde3 3.5.11? I can find nothing in there with a file timestamp past May of this year. What other detrius might there be? This probably explains my past failure(s) to get Autostart to function... TDE 3.5.13 test build for Mandriva 2011.0
by Francois Andriot 03 Aug '12

03 Aug '12

Hello, after the Mageia 2 build, here are the Mandriva 2011.0 packages for TDE 3.5.13 (I've built up to tdebase for now). Note: you should remove any previous packages from other repositories, in case you already had (I've already seen some attempts to build TDE on Mandriva 2011 in the mailing list). For x86_64: urpmi.addmedia trinity-3.5.13-x86_64 http://trinity.mangafrance.com/mdv2011.0/trinity-3.5.13/RPMS/x86_64/ urpmi.addmedia trinity-3.5.13-noarch http://trinity.mangafrance.com/mdv2011.0/trinity-3.5.13/RPMS/noarch/ urpmi.addmedia trinity-extras-x86_64 http://trinity.mangafrance.com/mdv2011.0/trinity-extras/RPMS/x86_64/ For i686: urpmi.addmedia trinity-3.5.13-i686 http://trinity.mangafrance.com/mdv2011.0/trinity-3.5.13/RPMS/i686/ urpmi.addmedia trinity-3.5.13-noarch http://trinity.mangafrance.com/mdv2011.0/trinity-3.5.13/RPMS/noarch/ urpmi.addmedia trinity-extras-i686 http://trinity.mangafrance.com/mdv2011.0/trinity-extras/RPMS/i686/ Then, install Trinity's base package: urpmi trinity-tdebase Then you can login through KDM/GDM or anything else, choose the "TDE" session. What else could I say ... it works, that's all ! The first login is a bit long, nothing to worry about. As expected, there is very few work to make the Mageia packages build on Mandriva 2011, so all the remaining TDE packages will be ready very soon. Mandriva users, please try this build and report any issue. Francois

installing parts of Trinity in /usr/local
by Philip Webb 22 Jul '12

22 Jul '12

For most activities, I use Fluxbox on Gentoo with a number of KDE 4 apps. However, there are 2 KDE 3 apps which I really value & which have not been ported -- or not adequately -- to KDE 4 , ie Kmahjongg & Kworldclock; I would also like to keep Ksokoban around. Currently, I have them installed with supporting libs in an overlay : O/LAYS -- kde-sunset : rebuilt for libpng15 111107 kde-base/kdeartwork-kworldclock-3.5.10 111107 kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.10-r6 [ ~ : 13 min ] 111107 kde-base/kmahjongg-3.5.10 111107 kde-base/ksokoban-3.5.10 111107 kde-base/kworldclock-3.5.10-r1 [~] 111107 kde-base/libkdegames-3.5.10 [for kmahjongg etc] 120630 net-dns/libidn-1.25 [for kdelibs3] 111107 x11-libs/qt-meta-3.3.8b-r2 [for KDE3] That's from my homemade list of installed pkgs. KDE 3 is no longer supported by Gentoo & will probably become unusable in the near future after some further update of the pkg-manager Portage. Therefore, I would like to install the Trinity versions of the above -- 'qt-meta:3' is a regular Gentoo pkg & sb ok as it stands -- & the correct place for them seems to be /usr/local . I don't want to install the rest of Trinity, which I wouldn't use. Is this feasible & does anyone have basic advice how to go about it ? I have 'git' installed, but am not a developer & have never used it as such: it merely provides background support for the 'sunset' overlay. -- ========================,,============================================ SUPPORT ___________//___, Philip Webb ELECTRIC /] [] [] [] [] []| Cities Centre, University of Toronto TRANSIT `-O----------O---' purslowatchassdotutorontodotca

TDE for ARM
by Mike Howard 20 Jul '12

Hi All, Maybe somebody could give me a hint on this. I hope it's not something obvious. For my own benefit, I'm attempting to rebuild the Red Hat rpms targeting armv5tel, so that I may use Trinity on my Toshiba AC100. I'm working through the main install requirements in order to get a basic install so I've done tqtinterface, arts, dbus-tqt, dbus-1-tqt, tdelibs along with all the requires but can't get past tdebase. tdebase gets almost there, but boms out at; ## ---- Start error output ---- ### [100%] Building CXX object kicker/kicker/CMakeFiles/kicker-module.dir/kicker_kdeinit_module.cpp.o cd /root/rpmbuild/BUILD/kdebase/build/kicker/kicker && /usr/bin/c++ -Dkicker_module_EXPORTS -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -O2 -g -march=armv5te -DQT_NO_ASCII_CAST -DQT_CLEAN_NAMESPACE -DQT_NO_STL -DQT_NO_COMPAT -DQT_NO_TRANSLATION -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -D_REENTRANT -include tqt.h -fPIC -I/root/rpmbuild/BUILD/kdebase/libkonq -I/usr/lib/qt-3.3/include -I/usr/include/tqt -o CMakeFiles/kicker-module dir/kicker_kdeinit_module.cpp.-o -c /root/rpmbuild/BUILD/kdebase/build/kicker/kicker/kicker_kdeinit_module.cpp Linking CXX shared module kicker.so cd /root/rpmbuild/BUILD/kdebase/build/kicker/kicker && /usr/bin/cmake -E cmake_link_script CMakeFiles/kicker-module.dir/link.txt -verbose=1 /usr/bin/c++ -fPIC -O2 -g -march=armv5te -DQT_NO_ASCII_CAST -DQT_CLEAN_NAMESPACE -DQT_NO_STL -DQT_NO_COMPAT -DQT_NO_TRANSLATION -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -D_REENTRANT -include tqt.h -Wl,--no-undefined -shared -Wl,-soname,kicker.so -o kicker.so CMakeFiles/kicker-module.dir/kicker_kdeinit_module.cpp.o -L/usr/lib/qt-3.3/lib libkdeinit_kicker.so ../libkicker/libkickermain.so.1.0.0 /usr/lib/libabc.so.1.2.0 /usr/lib/libvcard.so.0.0.0 /usr/lib/libkresources.so.1.2.0 /usr/lib/libkutils.so.1.2.0 /usr/lib/libkparts.so.2.1.0 / sr/lib/libkio.so.4.2.0 /usr/lib/libkdeui.so.4.2.0 -lfreetype -lfontconfig /usr/lib/libkdesu.so.4.2.0 -lutil /usr/lib/libkwalletclient.so.1.0.1 /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.4.2.0 /usr/lib/libDCOP.so.4.2.0 /usr/lib/libkdefx.so.4.2.0 -ltqt -lqt-mt -lXrender -lX11 -lz -lXcomposite -lXfixes -lICE -lSM /usr/bin/ld: warning: libkonq.so.4, needed by libkdeinit_kicker.so, not found (try using -rpath or -rpath-link) /usr/bin/ld: warning: libkickoffsearch_interfaces.so.0, needed by libkdeinit_kicker.so, not found (try using -rpath or -rpath-link) libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `KonqBookmarkManager::s_bookmarkManager' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `KickoffSearch::KickoffSearchInterface::qt_invoke(int, QUObject*)' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `typeinfo for KickoffSearch::Plugin' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `KickoffSearch::KickoffSearchInterface::qt_property(int, int, QVariant*)' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `typeinfo for KickoffSearch::KickoffSearchInterface' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `KickoffSearch::KickoffSearchInterface::KickoffSearchInterface(QObject*, char const*' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `KickoffSearch::KickoffSearchInterface::staticMetaObject()' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `KickoffSearch::Plugin::staticMetaObject()' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `KickoffSearch::KickoffSearchInterface::qt_cast(char const*)' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `vtable for KickoffSearch::KickoffSearchInterface' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `KickoffSearch::KickoffSearchInterface::qt_emit(int, QUObject*)' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `KonqPopupMenu::KonqPopupMenu(KBookmarkManager*, QPtrList<KFileItem> const&, KURL const&, KActionCollection&, KNewMenu*, QWidget*, unsigned int, unsigned int)' libkdeinit_kicker.so: undefined reference to `KonqOperations::doDrop(KFileItem const*, KURL const&, QDropEvent*, QWidget*)' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[2]: *** [kicker/kicker/kicker] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/root/rpmbuild/BUILD/kdebase/build' make[1]: *** [kicker/kicker/CMakeFiles/kicker.dir/all] Error 2 make[1]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs.... make[2]: Leaving directory `/root/rpmbuild/BUILD/kdebase/build' /usr/bin/cmake -E cmake_progress_report /root/rpmbuild/BUILD/kdebase/build/CMakeFiles [100%] Built target kicker-module make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/rpmbuild/BUILD/kdebase/build' make: *** [all] Error 2 error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.BTlI5u (%build) RPM build errors: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.BTlI5u (%build) ## ---- End error output ---- ### Two lines from above; /usr/bin/ld: warning: libkonq.so.4, needed by libkdeinit_kicker.so, not found (try using -rpath or -rpath-link) /usr/bin/ld: warning: libkickoffsearch_interfaces.so.0, needed by libkdeinit_kicker.so, not found (try using -rpath or -rpath-link) suggest to me it's a simple case of the libs libkonq.so.4 & libkickoffsearch_interfaces.so.0 not being found by libkdeinit_kicker.so. They do not exist on the system but are created during the build process. With that in mind, I did a quick and dirty hack of 'kicker/kicker/CMakeLists.txt' and added the two directories containing the two 'missing' libs to the 'link_directories' stanza but to no avail. The change adds '-L' entries for the locations of the libs but doesn't alter the result. Anybody know how I can rectify this correctly? I guess 'rpath' will need to come into play also. Any pointers appreciated. Cheers, Mike. -- Any question is easy if you know the answer!

Kmail-trinity account setup problem
by Glen Cunningham 14 Jul '12

14 Jul '12

G'day List, I'm sure that this has been asked on the list before, but my search-foo is low and I can't find it in the list archives. So here goes ... Trying to setup an account in Kmail-trinity, aptitude show kmail-trinity identifies it as Version: 4:3.5.13-0debian9+r1258263+pr10~squeeze if that helps. Anyway, when I get to <Configure - Kmail>, <Accounts>, <Add> the "Add Account - Kmail" window is too big and the OK/Save box is hidden below the bottom of the screen so nothing that I enter is saved. Moving the panel out of the way does not help on this netbook with 1024x600 resolution and all attempts to resize the window fail. What is the fix/work-around, please? Ta, Glen (stuck in GOF mode)

How to use Serghei's overlay?
by Tony Rein 08 Jul '12

08 Jul '12

Hello to all. I've found this overlay: https://github.com/serghei/gentoo-trinity-overlay How do I use it within Gentoo? I've installed layman and of course "layman -L" doesn't show it. Can anyone tell me how to make its ebuilds visible? I've also tried downloading from this link: https://github.com/serghei/gentoo-trinity-overlay/zipball/master and making a local overlay, but that didn't work -- only kde4 packages showed up in emerge --search. It's possible I have something masked, but I'd think if I had the overlay set up correctly, that they would show up in the search, just marked as uninstallable. I don't need the whole TDE desktop -- I only want to get kpdf and gwenview working. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or explanations. Tony

is there a version of trinity that acually works
by Lou Gogan 06 Jul '12

06 Jul '12

Hi folks I was delighted when I heard about trinity as I still use kubuntu 8.04 and will never, until death or even beyond, use kde4 or any other developer ego-driven user-unfriendly DE. I followed the instructions on the installation page: http://trinitydesktop.org/installation.php ubuntu section, and after installing ubuntu 11.10 on a spare partition, I entered the commands as instructed. Firstly, there was the known problem with the sudo command which the developers have decided to keep a secret and not edit the installation instructions to add 3 lines of text to help the user. But I was pointed to the bug page and followed the instructions there. I was able to download and start trinity (v3.5.13) and as soon as I clicked on the main menu button the system crashed and the whole panel disappeared leaving a totally blank desktop. Here is here I get really confused. I did have a look at the known bugs and this seems to be a know 'solved'? bug - I think. What is the point in having incorrect instructions to download and install a desktop which doesn't work? If someone said it was a joke created by the kde4 team it would make some sense, they would be getting a laugh at someone who was looking for a real desktop which had the end user in mind, but if this is a genuine 'alternative' then I am at a loss as to why there is any talk of trinity desktop at all. I do understand that the developers are busy working on R14 - the NEXT GREATEST THING - with the WOW factor!!!! (you remember the WOW factor?) but what is the point if the previous version doesn't work? 8:( This seems to be exactly the same attitude towards the end user as the other DE developers, or am I wrong? 8^} Is there a different installation page with instructions of how to obtain a working version of trinity? Is there a working version? Please tell me that I am wrong about everything and there is a simple explanation for all this. AND there is a working version! - hidden somewhere! Or are you the kde4 team having a laugh? !! Thanks Lou

Problem using sudo in exegnulinux_3.3_preview4
by Robert Peters 05 Jul '12

05 Jul '12

Hello, For me also, exegnulinux_3.3_preview4.iso works in live mode and installs fine. During installation I told it to not disable sudo. It asked for a user password and a root password. But now, when I try to run an admin app, such as adjust date & time, a KDE su dialog appears but doesn't accept my password. Also, when I enter a terminal sudo command, it fails saying that I am not in the sudoers file. Is there a way to correct this? Should I reinstall with the option to disable sudo? thx - Robert

They are also not the settings I had before the update. Also my konsole no longer is using its previous settings. Do you have any idea? Calvin

SSL Error on the Trinity web site
by leee 29 Jun '12

29 Jun '12

Just a heads-up. Clicking "Nightly Builds" on the Trinity web site menu bar results in an SSL Error: "The site's security certificate is not trusted! You attempted to reach quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net, but the server presented a certificate issued by an entity that is not trusted by your computer's operating system. This may mean that the server has generated its own security credentials, which Chromium cannot rely on for identity information, or an attacker may be trying to intercept your communications. You should not proceed, especially if you have never seen this warning before for this site." It's invoked because https is specified for access to the nightly builds; is this necessary? Also, I can't help thinking that an unqualified certificate is worse than useless, so why does it even exist? LeeE

KdeSudo password problem
by Marc Chénier 28 Jun '12

28 Jun '12

Hi, I have been using TDE (now 5.13.1) with Kubuntu Oneiric for a year or so. I regularly update with adept_updater. It worked fine until my last update. But now when prompted by adept_updater for my admin privilege password, after 3 tries, I get a KdeSudo Error window saying Wrong Password. But I have not recently changed, removed or added any password. It consists of alphanumeric characters only. This same problem applies when I try to open other kde applications that require administrative powers. I urgently need your help to get my password back. I do not have this problem when I log into TDE at the beginning of a session or kmail, or when I open a superuser console from the regular console. Here is some info I can give you : $ ls -l kdesudo -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 55972 2011-10-26 17:24 kdesudo $ ls -l adept_updater -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1246592 2011-10-14 17:36 adept_updater $ dpkg -l | grep kdesudo ii kdesudo 3.4.2.3-2ubuntu3 sudo frontend for KDE ii kdesudo-trinity 4:3.5.13-0ubuntu9+r1260892+pr3~oneiric sudo frontend for Trinity Thanks in advance for responding. X cursor
by Calvin Morrison 25 Jun '12

25 Jun '12

Hi All, I use my laptop at work via X11 forwarding (to my main desktop which is a mac). I usually initiate a ssh session and then run: /opt/trinity/bin/kdeinit -no-kded This starts a kde session without the kded daemon (which launches kicker and kdesktop and so). For some reason however my X cursor isn't set properly, and instead it's the very ugly default one (which drives me insane), instead of the one I set in kcontrol. This only happens on x11 forwarding and not on my local sessions. Anyone have any ideas? Calvin

problems installing trinity in oneiric - ubuntu 11.10
by Lou Gogan 19 Jun '12

19 Jun '12

Hi I downloaded ubuntu 11.10 and installed it onto a spare partition. I then followed the installation outlined on the TDE website sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install kubuntu-default-settings-trinity kubuntu-desktop-trinity after an hour of downloading kde 3.5.13 apt-get install was doing what it should have been doing BUT then I got the following error message: ~~~~~~~~~ start ~~~~~~~~ Extracting templates from packages: 100% Preconfiguring packages ... dpkg: sudo: dependency problems, but removing anyway as you requested: ubuntu-minimal depends on sudo. gksu depends on sudo. (Reading database ... 135124 files and directories currently installed.) Removing sudo ... You have asked that the sudo package be removed, but no root password has been set. Without sudo, you may not be able to gain administrative privileges. If you would prefer to access the root account with su(1) or by logging in directly, you must set a root password with "sudo passwd". If you have arranged other means to access the root account, and you are sure this is what you want, you may bypass this check by setting an environment variable (export SUDO_FORCE_REMOVE=yes). Refusing to remove sudo. dpkg: error processing sudo (--remove): subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1 No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already Errors were encountered while processing: sudo E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) ~~~~~~~~~ end ~~~~~~~~ When I logged out and back in again there was no sign of Trinity or kde3 in the login menu I presume I am not the first person to have tried to install kde 3.5.13 on ubuntu 11.10. Can anyone advise me? I presume this isn't a beta version of kde3. 1. Should the installation script have attempted to remove sudo? (I'm no expert but that doesn't seem right.) 2. How can I try and start the kde desktop? 3. For future reference, if I had installed Kubuntu 11.10 instead of Ubuntu would the download of kde 3.5.13 have been any shorter? Any help would be appreciated (though for the moment I'll stick to my trusted kubuntu 8.04). Thanks Lou
