what ver of (k)ubuntu is most suitable for tde
by Lou Gogan 16 Jun '12

16 Jun '12

Greetings Believe it or not I've only come across a reference to trinity in the last week or so when checking out porteus usb-stick linux. It really cheered me up that kde3 (as tde) is still not only alive but seemingly very healthy! At present I am still using kubuntu 8.04 for obvious reasons but would be delighted to install a more up-to-date os and tde on another partition on my hard drive. I have already downloaded kubuntu 12.04 (always in the hope, in vain, that it had somehow become more kde3 than kde4!) but I don't see any mention of (k)ubuntu 12.04 in the installation instruction page, so I presume I should use a release from last year. Also I notice that ubuntu 11.10 is mentioned rather than kubuntu 11.10. Is it recommended that I use ubuntu 11.10 rather than kubuntu 11.10 in case of conflicts? Or does it matter at all? I also have an iso of xubuntu 11.10 - would that be suitable? Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks Lou

Ubuntu 12.04 + TDE
by westbound＠gmx.net 13 Jun '12

13 Jun '12

Hello, yesterday i installed TDE (nightly builds) on top of Ubuntu 12.04. On login, all i get is a blank desktop with an equally blank xterm, nothing else. Oh yes, the first time i also got this: "cannot open theme file /opt/trinity/share/apps/kdm/themes/kubunty-trinity" I linked the tdm folder to the above, but nothing changed, except that the error message disappeared. Is this the current state of the project for 12.04, or am i doing something wrong? Thanks, Mike -- NEU: FreePhone 3-fach-Flat mit kostenlosem Smartphone! kpowersave 3.5.14
by Greg Madden 13 Jun '12

13 Jun '12

New laptop, installed Debian Wheezy AMD64, which is Debians current testing branch and TDE 3.5.14 from nightly builds., built for Wheezy. TDE is working well here. Since this is a laptop install I want to usekpowersave. I get the kpowersave icon in my systray but there is no inormation or options available when I right click on the icon. Package info suggests it supports ACPI, APM and PMU, screensaver, DPMS, among others. Any info on what apps TDE has available to manage or show laptop specific items would be appreciated. Thanks -- Peace, Greg

really weird trinity oddity
by Nix 10 Jun '12

10 Jun '12

Using Trinity trunk, finally (switched from KDE 3.5.10, yay!), there is one definite oddity. I use a program (xplanet) as my desktop background, and fvwm 2.6.5 with a 3x6 set of viewports. KDE 3.5.10 respected the program's refresh rate and reran it only when the requested interval passed, but Trinity is rerunning it whenever the viewport changes at all, Since I have viewport moves bound to keys and that can happen a dozen times a second, this is less than ideal. I thought maybe something in Trinity was looking at the _NET_DESKTOP_VIEWPORT, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Does anyone know why this might be happening? (I'm investigating further, of course.) -- NULL && (void)

Manual "save session" problem on latest Slavek packages
by Nick Leverton 09 Jun '12

09 Jun '12

Hi Slavek, I've a small problem which has arisen lately since tracking your updates, which wasn't in 3.5.12 or 3.5.13. When I do a manual "save session", then the "saving session" dialogue box never goes away. In fact a second "save session" dialogue pops up, and they repeatedly take turns in forcing themselve to the foreground. This option is only available if you choose "Restore manually saved session" in kcontrol Session Manager settings so I guess not too many people may be affected. It's a bit awkward though as it's one option I do rely on. How can I help debug it further ? How to make proper backtraces?
by Dexter Filmore 01 Jun '12

01 Jun '12

Can't trace crashes. What would I need for, let's say, kopete. Is there a general approach? This backtrace appears to be of no use. This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents creation of proper backtraces, or the stack frame was seriously corrupted in the crash. passprompt ptrace: Kein passender Prozess gefunden. /home/dexter/11345: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden. /home/dexter/.trinity/tmp-shodan/drkonqiPJG8gE.tmp:1: Error in sourced command file: No stack. -- -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.12 GCS d--(+)@ s-:+ a C++++ UL++ P+>++ L+++>++++ E-- W++ N o? So, I'd like to compile the 3.5.13 src on ubuntu 12.04. Before I start making deb-build scripts: anyone got some? I have the 3.5.13-monolithic tarball. desktop icons
by Lisi 29 May '12

29 May '12

Hello all! Next problem (a minor one this time): how do I put an icon of an application on the desktop when the application is not in the menu? The application is definitely there; it can be started from the launcher. But Kappfinder doesn't find it and it isn't in the menu. In case it is relevant, the required icon is a shortcut to Evince on TDE 3.5.13 on Debian Squeeze. Thanks. Lisi

A Sincere Thank You!
by Marvin L Jones 29 May '12

I want to thank whoever fixed konqueror in Trinity 3.5.13.1(.axis) to once again support flash! I just discovered this by accident. :-) Heretofore I've been bumping along with Ubuntu karmic and Trinity/kde 3.5.11 and had was in the habit of clicking up Firefox whenever I had a 'complicated' web page to visit. A BIG thank you to whoever got that solved, and a BIG thank you to all the developers on the Trinity team. Problems with Icedove on Squeeze and Trinity 3.5.13 with Slávek's repository added
by Lisi 28 May '12

28 May '12

Hello, everybody :-) This is a fresh installation and I am still setting it up. All seemed to be well until I tried to launch Icedove. A small icon followed the mouse, no other result. I purged and reinstalled a couple of times, still no luck. So I purged, removed some gunk (files an directories) that was still there and installed the mozilla.debian version of Icedove. Still the same. This time I thought to keep some of the error messages, where there were any. They are below, in the order in which I did them: not very logical I'm afraid. Before I purge and install from source, possibly/probably with the same result, can anyone see what the problem is, and how I should resolve it? Slávek's repository
by Lisi 28 May '12

28 May '12

I thought that I remembered that Slávek's patches for TDE 3.5.13 were now available in the form of a repository, but cannot find the reference in spite of spending some time searching. Could some kind soul point me the way - either to the imagined repository or to the patches, before I pull out the last of my hair? - which is falling out quite enough under its own steam. It doesn't need my help. :-( Thanks, Lisi

KDE4 :-(
by Lisi 26 May '12

26 May '12

I have a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze with LXDE and TDE 3.5.12. I seem to have a fair bit of KDE4 junk clogging up my system. I can't remember how I got rid of it in the past. Can I just use find or locate with grep rm? This is someone else's computer, so there is a limit to how much I want to mess around! Though I could obviously reinstall. Lisi

Slavek: ~slavek-banko/+archive/axis
by Marvin L Jones 24 May '12

24 May '12

Salvek, Two questions about: https://quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/~slavek-banko/+archive/axis When selecting Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04), is this the _full_ respository for upgrading Trinity 3.5.12 to 3.5.13? I am thinking that this is so. But, I wanted a confirmation before I go and mangle up my system. :-) Question #2: Does this PPA contain any/all backports that you been so kind in building from the current 3.5.14 development? If not, do you have (any) backports for the Lucid release? Thank you very much! Suggestion: a list of distros with TDE
by Alexis PM 22 May '12

22 May '12

Hello! I propose the next suggestion: Place on TDE's website in a visible place (eg between Downloads and Screenshots), a list of all distros that have Trinity as desktop environment in its ISOs. I know 4: * Exe GNU/Linux ( http://exegnulinux.net ): Debian live CD with graphical installation and only free/libre software by default. * Porteus ( http://porteus.org ): Slackware based, the Slack's community continuation. It use TDE in the x86 version (KDE4 in the x86_64 version). * Trinity-Kubuntu ( http://apt.pearsoncomputing.net/cdimages ): Ubuntu remaster with TDE. * WifiSlax ( http://www.wifislax.com ): Slax / Porteus based with wireless security auditory focus. Best regards!

kdm_greet overheat
by Mike Bird 11 May '12

11 May '12

Does anyone have a foolproof way of preventing kdm_greet using 100% CPU in version 4:3.5.13-0debian9+r1261450+pr19~squeeze ? We have: # grep -i sak /etc/trinity/kdm/kdmrc UseSAK=false but still we see 100% CPU usage on some (but not all) laptops after power up before login. Laptops are running 30°C hotter with kdm_greet running 100%, resulting in occasional failures. TIA, --Mike Bird

R: Re: [trinity-users] Unable to run nm-applet
by daniele.manghi＠libero.it 07 May '12

Sorry, my problem is not the wireless connection, but the mobile connection. I can't activate a mobile USB key on my GPRS or UMTS network, because : 1) nm-applet does not start 2) umtsmon starts, but seems not able to setup the ppp connection (I don't know why) Instead, from kde 4 session, all is working, both umtsmon and nm-applet, but - again - I can't tell the difference. As a consequence, I have to stick to Plasma (which I don't like) If I want to go to the umts net. Tinity KDE 3.5.13 RPMS for 2011.0
by Tim Williams 04 May '12

04 May '12

This has been a long time coming, but I've finally managed to get the first set of packages Trinity KDE 3.5.13 packages built for Mandriva 2011.0. You'll find the packages the installation instructions on : http://www.autotrain.org/mdv-kde/mdv2011.0.html The initial build is for 64bit (x86_64) systems only, mainly because I recently upgraded. 32bit packages will follow when I have time to sort them out, but no promises exactly when. The above build isn't complete, and there are some problems, so please read the notes. I will be adding packages as time goes so check periodically for updates. In particular please pay attention to the change in the config directory from .kde3 to .trinity. When I have some time I upload the SPEC files and patches into the relevant part of git. For month I was not able to use * lazarus-ide * dropbox * calibre as a normal user. The only work-arround was using 'sudo NAMEOFAPPLICATION'. You saved my live! I've googled a lot to know what could be the culprit without success. Uninstalling kgtk-qt3-trinity brought all back to normal. What a big step forward! kgtk-qt3-trinity should not be installed by default. Or there should be a big warning on the www.trinitydesktop.org page! Thanks a lot from a now more happy TDE user Gerhard

Trying to install Trinity packages under Lubuntu 12.04
by Robert Peters 01 May '12

01 May '12

Hello, After installing Lubuntu 12.04 from a USB drive on an i386 machine, I updated everything, enabled the four Trinity repositories in Synaptic, then tried to mark a package for installation. An "unresolvable dependencies" error message like this appeared: kpdf-trinity: Depends: kdelibs4c2a-trinity but it is not going to be installed Perhaps it's because my Lubuntu version is "precise", while the latest Trinity repositories version is "oneiric". If so, I wonder what to do. Maybe I need to be running Lubuntu Oneiric when installing Trinity packages? PS. I like to use Lubuntu as the base system since wireless networking works well that way - have had connection trouble when using KDE/Trinity wireless networking. Otherwise, I really like Trinity Krusader, Amarok, etc.

Problems after migration / korgac

Yesterday finally decided to upgrade Kubuntu 10.10 to 11.10 as support for 10.10 expired. Well, didn't really go smooth but got it working. A Trinity Ubuntu Precise Live CD?
by Andrew Young 26 Apr '12

26 Apr '12

Has anybody given any thoughts to creating a new Trinity Live CD for Ubuntu? Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin should be released today. It is a LTS (long term support) version and will receive updates for the next five years (both server and desktop). Previous Ubuntu LTS releases were supported for 3 years on the desktop and 5 years on the server. Normal Ubuntu releases are supported for 18 months. I did consider making one for Ubuntu 11.10 but I don't know how! What software should be included? If nobody else rises to the challenge I will investigate making a Live CD using Ubuntu 12.04 and TDE 3.5.13 and call it a beta version. When 3.5.14 is released the Live CD can be updated and an official version announced. What do we call it - Tubuntu, Tribuntu, Tbuntu or simply Ubuntu Trinity?

Installing Trinity 3.5.12 on Squeeze
by Lisi 24 Apr '12

24 Apr '12

Hello, all! I am trying to install Trinity 3.5.12 on Squeeze, with LXDE already installed, (sources.list below). Having edited my sources.list, I then: # apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net --recv-keys 2B8638D0 # aptitude update # aptitude install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity I got a long list of unsatisfied dependencies and a suggested resolution. I tried, as I usually do, to see what was unresolved and what I wanted to do about it, but this proved so difficult in LXDE's terminal that I finally decided to install whatever it would install, and take it from there. It installed nothing. (Or, as it put it 0.) I did exactly this a couple of weeks ago on another computer, and ended up with Trinity 3.5.12 up and running. Can anyone spot what I have done wrong this time? To make matters worse, I have to get this done by tomorrow. :-( Thanks. Hi, I just found out, that Trinity (3.5.13) does not modify the font size in xterm, when I select a different size with Ctl-right-mouse-click. Did I something wrong i.e. missing a font or is it a so called "feature" (not to say a bug). Fine regards Rolf

kpowersave & ACPI
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 28 Mar '12

28 Mar '12

I have a problem with kpowersave and ACPI on my T60p. kpowersave complains about missing ACPI support, battery status is not shown (it's always on AC, even when AC is disconnected). I can retrieve the battery status with acpi: $ acpi -b Battery 0: Discharging, 98%, 02:16:03 remaining Has anybody a clue what I am missing? It's running wheezy and TDE 3.5.13. acpid is running, thinkpad relevant modules are loaded, hal-trinity is installed, too. Nik

Is the consensus of opinion that 10.5.12 is steady and rock solid enough for me it give it to someone else (a definite non-geek)? I get the impression that 10.5.13 is still not bug-free enough for Just Using. Thanks, Lisi

TDE Qt4 theme engine [TDE spring fundraiser]
by Timothy Pearson 22 Mar '12

22 Mar '12

It's time for our TDE spring fundraiser! The TDE project relies on your financial support to continue development of this reliable and easy-to-use desktop environment. As my way of saying thank you I have developed a new theme engine for Qt4 that allows you to use your TDE styles and file dialogs in new Qt4 applications, as well as interface methods required to easily convert common Qt4 objects to TQt3 objects and vice versa. If we can raise the $2,000 required to keep the TDE project running for the rest of the year by April 30, 2012, I will release the source code for this new theme engine under the GPL and also integrate it into the next TDE release. Once this engine and the conversion methods are part of TDE, the foundation will have been laid for work to begin on a Webkit-based replacement for the aging KHTML engine. Donations can be securely made to the project at this address: http://trinitydesktop.org/donate.php I will also update that page from time to time with progress made towards the $2,000 goal. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Library requirements: TQt3, Qt4, and TDE core Lines of C++ source code: 4207 (theme engine and Qt4 object translator) License: GPL Functional quality: ALPHA Screenshots of the theme engine in action are attached, showing common TDE styles in use with Qt4 applications. If you want to see this engine released and think the TDE project is worth a few dollars, please donate to help keep the TDE project going! Timothy Pearson Trinity Desktop Project

using tde kde3 libs on ubuntu 11.10 unity
by Eldon Tyrell 19 Mar '12

19 Mar '12

Hi, not sure my subject made sense so i'll try to explain a bit further. Short version : I basically want to build my own kaffeine 0.8 source (including numerous patches) on my freshly upgraded ubuntu 11.10 (unity). Is it correct to assume that using your kde3 tde packages i'll be able to build my kaff source and run it on my unity system ? Can i build and run vanilla kde3 app source using your libs but not your desktop ? Long version : I found out a bit too late that kde3 libs were ditched so i'm now stuck with kaff 1.2 which is far from satisfying my requirements.. I've been trying for the past few days to figure out a proper way (meaning without breaking the current ubuntu kde5 libs) to restore kde3 libs on my ubuntu 11.10 system in order to build kaffeine but i'm no deb package wizard. As soons as i searched for kde3 i was pointed towards trinity and so found out about your kde3 desktop and ppa which probably includes all the required kde3 libs to run kaffeine. I've also tried to run your kaffeine 0.8 package but after a successful installation, it fails to run with an error. I've managed to run configure in my kaffeine source using the following command : #./configure --prefix=/opt/kde3 --without-xcb --without-lame --without-gstreamer --without-xinerama --without-oggvorbis --with-extra-includes=/usr/include/tqt/ the --without(s) are there to skip unnecessary parts and should be ignored but i had to add the tqt include path otherwise it was complaining about some missing tqt headers files which are located in the regular not /opt path. make then fails after outputing a very large quantity of "undefined reference to", like the last one here : .libs/playlistimport.o:(.data.rel.ro._ZTI15NoatunXMLParser[typeinfo for NoatunXMLParser]+0x10): undefined reference to `typeinfo for QXmlDefaultHandler' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[5]: *** [libkaffeinepart.la] Error 1 And i can't see any actual error statement but obviously something is not working. Thx for reading, any help wil be greatly appreciated. Marc

In addition to patches for qt-x11-free on my list of issues remains to be many problems with Kaffeine, for which I do not have patches and solutions. And then also a minor issue with displaying of SVG wallpapers (bugs #744, #615). Does anyone have any other useful patches suitable for backport? Strange firefox failure...
by Marvin L Jones 10 Mar '12

10 Mar '12

I have a new'ish, updated, install of kubuntu (Trinity) 10.04 and I installed firefox (10.0.2) from the repositories. When I (attempt to) launch firefox from the "K" menu, or from a copy of the "K" menu dragged and dropped on either the destop or the quick launch toolbar (where I _do_ want it), I get this (and only this) in /var/log/messages: Mar 9 16:50:56 nix4 kernel: [ 6233.488442] firefox[5703]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp bfa57b6c error 4 in libc-2.11.1.so[110000+153000] (... all 1 line.) HOWEVER, if I open a konsole window and enter `firefox`, it works Just Fine. I've `apt-get`ted -remove(d) -purge , and re-installed. No joy. I have no such issue with the other installed browsers: Epiphany, Chromium, Opera, and (of course) konqueror... Where would I start looking? Googling (Advanced) yields nada. Thanks! Hex Editor for Lucid Trinity (KDE 3.5.11)
by Marvin L Jones 08 Mar '12

Is there a okteta-kde3 or the somesuch for Ubuntu Lucid Trinity 3.5.11? It seems KHexEdit (or khexedit) no longer exists. In karmic I was using okteta (kde4). But, I also had ALL the bloat of kde4 on my system, too. When I attempt to install okteta on lucid, it wants to install ALL of kde4. I'm trying to keep this lucid/trinity as pristine as possible. For Debian it works okay to do something like: 'apt-get install --no-install-recommends <pakage name>'. Debians dependancy resoluion will take care of the rest. First experience with Ubuntu Precise
by Stefan Endrullis 06 Mar '12

06 Mar '12

Hello, does someone tried to install Trinity on Ubuntu Precise? Today I upgraded my system from Oneiric to Precise due to new hardware that did not work properly on Oneiric. Everything works fine in Precise, except the sound. While I still have sound in gdm or in unity DE I don't hear anything in Trinity. Since the sound works already in gdm I think it should also work in Trinity if Trinity would not touch it at startup. Unfortunately Trinity does. Shortly after the start the sound gets somehow deactivated or invisible muted (in alsamixer everything looks fine, volume is up not muted). However, I don't hear anything and I don't get any error messages). What can I do? Regards, Stefan

Please use version numbers!
by westbound＠gmx.net 28 Feb '12

28 Feb '12

Dear list, i have been using Trinity for roughly 1.5 years, a very pleasant experience as opposed to KDE4. My setup is Ubuntu 10.10, and this is where my complaint starts. I will be trying to update pretty soon now, but i only find (not) funny names in the install instructions. I have been a linux user since Redhat 5.1, and it was always clear that 6.1 is more recent than 5.3, but older then 7.1. Later, it was Debian and Ubuntu. Now, i have to cope with childish names. Even the download page for Ubuntu uses version numbers, so it´s not even possible for me to decide which is which. Can someone please provide a translation table for the Debian and Ubuntu repositories? Thanks for the good work, Mike And PLEASE, use version numbers in the future! -- Empfehlen Sie GMX DSL Ihren Freunden und Bekannten und wir belohnen Sie mit bis zu 50,- Euro! https://freundschaftswerbung.gmx.de

consumption problem (critical for labtop)
by Patrick Serru 27 Feb '12

27 Feb '12

Hello everybody, I always have a window "ksysgard" in my session. I noticed something that looks like a bug: the system consumes "abnormally", but not always. I was not able to cause the problem for sure. I am relatively sure it's related to KMail. Once opened and closed KMail. The only window "KSysgard" is open. It's strange because while preparing this e-mail, I re-opened KMail and opened Kate. Ksysgard was hidden. Deciding to watch the "consumption" while writing in kate, I de-masked Ksysgard: After this simple operation, consumption is re-lowered to a "normal" level ... Comments on the attached picture: The vertical lines are spaced 60 seconds (1 sample per second) The horizontal lines are spaced 5% The left side (96% CPU load) represents the opening of the session, The following peaks represent the closure of all the windows and then opening and closing KMail Most of the picture represents this abnormal consumption On the left, back to "normal" situation. I place this mail "users" list, because I dont want to repport a minor bug, if I'm the only one to see that. To you to confirm or deny... System kubuntu 10.10-trinity-enterprise (86x_64) Good luck to everyone, Patrick

Using Trinity with Squeeze.
by Lisi 24 Feb '12

24 Feb '12

I am about to install Trinity on Squeeze (Debian 6.0.4) for a client. I have a complete copy of /home on the old version: Lenny (Debian 5). The end of security support for Lenny precipitated this. I am anxious about settings and data, and am hoping that TDE has reached the stage where it is truly usable by the non-expert user. My husband was due to be the guinea-pig, poor man, but was using LXDE during the mirror problems and opted to stay where he was. I installed Squeeze and TDE for myself, but managed to mess up my mail in KMail, and retreated (temporarily) back to Lenny and KDE 3.5.10. So - any advice? The KDE configurations will almost certainly be a problem. Any advise on how to rename them _before_ I mess everything up. I have been Googling. It wasn't reassuring! See, e.g., http://lxer.com/module/forums/t/31333/ . It was also not much use. I am very happy to RTFM if some kind soul would point me to the FM. I can't find it. And I should be delighted at LMGTFY - my Google-foo, in so far as it ever existed, seems to have deserted me! Thanks, Lisi

Hi all, running on Funtoo/Gentoo i have this strange problem with the ALT+F2 run-dialog in trinity-3.5.13. Hitting ALT+F2 i can run stuff like firefox htop xchat ... but other tools like top urxvt ... i get an error saying 'Could not run the specified command" Even weirder as i said i can run "firefox" but "/usr/bin/firefox" gives me the same error as above... Using "Options-> Run in Terminal Window" it works too but i get an additional konsole-window. I'm wondering if i could be missing a kioslave or sth. kdebase-kioslaves is installed.. i think it is not a path problem because all tools are located in /usr/bin/ and the absolute-path doesn't work too. Is there sth. else that i should be looking for? How can i get the debug output from that dialog? greetings, Roman

issue since 3.5.13 upgrade
by Greg Madden 20 Feb '12

20 Feb '12

I have read, here, some users have various issues with 3.5.13. Here is mine. I use Librreoffice 3.3.4 for my business, all my docs & templates are full page tables, and multiple pages. One significant issue I have is the cut/copy> paste function in tables does not work in a timely fashion. I select data in multiple cells that I want to move or copy elswhere in the table/tables and it takes two tries to accomplish this. The first try pastes the data into a single cell, I have to repeat the select/cut/copy>paste process.. time consuming on a feature that can really save time. Now how is this a "TDE issue, not sure but two things stand out to me. 1. This is very pronounced since the upgrade from 3.5.12 > 3.5.13. 2. This sequence works fine in a Virtualbox instance of TDE 3.5.12 same LO ver. I could just re-install 3.5.12 on my workstation, but before I do I wanted to check other users issues, not 100% confidant the VB is an accurate test environment, i.e. everything seems to work fine with the virtual hardware VB uses, and it isn't a 100% identical software stack . -- Peace, Greg

Loading Trinity without internet (Debian)
by jc 19 Feb '12

19 Feb '12

Have to load Trinity on a new machine with Debian 6, with internet - no problems. Also have to update some machines running deb 5 KDE where there is no internet and have a identical machine with internet access. Update no problems (reload with wad of DVD's), not sure how to load Trinity My linux/unix knowledge is not good although have used linux as a prime desktop for 12 years but with not much debian experience. Only idea at present is to run apt-get -d install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity >tdeload. followed by /var/cache/apt/archives to a DVD then - on another machine to HD at /var/cache/apt/archives EITHER put /var/cache/apt/archives in sources.list apt-get -install desktop-base-trinity kde-trinity OR cd /var/cache/apt/archives dpkg -i desktop-base-trinity dpkg -i kde-trinity OR redo tdeload. as script, in order, for dpkg There is probably a better/easier method which I haven't thought of and don't want to find problems which involve satphones ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ worse than that seattle mob) -- regards John Campbell

One of the problems I experienced when I tried V3.5.13 was that ksysguard was no longer detecting the lm-sensors output. Has anyone else experienced the same problem, or conversely, are people that are using 3.5.13 finding that ksysguard _is_ detecting the hardware sensors on their systems? Regards, LeeE

kdm-trinity (V3.5.12) timing out before X starts
by leee 17 Feb '12

17 Feb '12

Hi, I'm frequently experiencing a problem with kdm-trinity (V3.5.12) appearing to time out on system start-up. The following two lines are put into my syslog when this happens: kdm[1966]: X server startup timeout, terminating kdm[1966]: X server for display :0 can't be started, session disabled This is an intermittant problem and doesn't happen every time I start my system (I'd guess it occurs about 50% of the time). When it does I'm left with just the basic console. However, all I need to do to get X up and running is to log in on the console and restart kdm-trinity. The system is running Debian Squeeze on amd64 with an nVidia graphics card using the proprietary nVidia driver. Curiously, I don't recall this happening when I first installed TDE V3.5.12, which was quite some time ago now and it only seems to have started occurring relatively recently. Since I first installed Trinity V3.5.12 I have installed a number of Debian Squeeze updates but in addition to this I also tried upgrading to TDE V3.5.13 but then had to downgrade back to TDE V3.5.12 due to a couple of problems with V3.5.13. As I didn't remove TDE V3.5.13 and all of its config files when I downgraded back to TDE V3.5.12 I imagine that it's possible that kdm-trinity V3.5.13 introduced some different configuration settings. Alternatively, there have been a couple of kernel updates during this period (I compile my own kernels from the Debian linux-source package and then need to recompile the nVidia driver to fit the new kernel. The kernel updates have all been minor point updates so the kernel configs have been unchanged over the period concerned) and this may be a factor. Fwiw, the syslog messages from kdm-trinity appear about 15 seconds after the nVidia module load message. I've also had a look in the Xorg.log files and while there are no clear errors or warnings there are differences at the end of the logs between successful and unsuccessful start ups as shown below... Unsuccessful startup: (**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev" (**) Option "xkb_model" "pc105" (**) Option "xkb_layout" "gb" (II) Power Button: Close (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" (II) Power Button: Close (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" (II) AT Translated Set 2 keyboard: Close (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" (II) ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse: Close (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" (II) ACPI Virtual Keyboard Device: Close (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" Successful startup: (**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev" (**) Option "xkb_model" "pc105" (**) Option "xkb_layout" "gb" (II) Open ACPI successful (/var/run/acpid.socket) (II) Feb 15 11:52:58 NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1920x1200+0+0" (II) Power Button: Device reopened after 1 attempts. (II) Power Button: Device reopened after 1 attempts. (II) AT Translated Set 2 keyboard: Device reopened after 1 attempts. (II) ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse: Device reopened after 1 attempts. (II) ACPI Virtual Keyboard Device: Device reopened after 1 attempts. The extract from the unsuccessful start up clearly shows that some of the devices are being closed but I can't see any reasons why and, as I say, there are no errors or warnings: apart from some different time-stamps earlier on in the logs they are otherwise identical (according to KDiff3). Any hints or tips would be appreciated. Regards, LeeE

Re: [trinity-users] LXDE, TDE and KMail - can I achieve what I would like to do?
by Kristopher John Gamrat 13 Feb '12

13 Feb '12

Since Calvin answered two of your questions, I'll answer the remaining. It is possible to not enter the password in Kmail, most email clients offer to store the password. In the Kmail settings, go to Accounts and click Add. You'll have the option of POP, IMAP, or Disconnected IMAP. After entering the details at http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=78799 (for IMAP/Disconnected IMAP) or at http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13287 (for POP) (make sure to enable either POP or IMAP in your Gmail settings in your browser!), tick off Store Password, Show Only Serverside Subscribed Folders, Include In Manual Check (optional), and Enable Interval Checking (optional). On the Security tab, select "Use SSL" and "Clear Text". When you apply the settings, it will either bring up KWallet or ask you to confirm storing the password unsafely (depending on whether or not KWallet is installed). If it brings up KWallet, and you /don't / want to use it, just click Next, then Finish (don't set a KWallet password if you're not going to use it). For sending, enter the smtp details on either of those links. For security, select TLS (/not/ SSL) and Plain. For IMAP, POP, and SMTP, you need to use the full email address as the login. -- Kris Gamrat Ark Linux webmaster http://www.arklinux.org/ P.S. If you're not sure the difference between IMAP and Disconnected IMAP, Disconnected IMAP (AKA Cached IMAP) downloads all emails. This causes it to load slowly when you first setup your IMAP since it needs to download everything and each sync will go slightly more slowly if you've received emails. The advantage is that your downloaded email will still be accessible if something happens to your Internet connection. If you don't need it to download attachments automatically, you can disable that elsewhere in Kmail yet still have Disconnected IMAP (it will download the text only).

Nevertheles here are my 2 cents as well. I'm with KDE3 from the very beginning (and with KDE2 before). It was a big disappointment for me when I realized which way KDE4 was going to go starting with things like - dropping Konqueror in favor of Dolphin - demanding from the users to switch to a desktop (KDE4) with absolute reduced functionality - banning users from the discussion list because they were no Fanboys of KDE4 - ... I did not upgrade from Ubuntu Gutsy (was this the latest one with KDE3 officially included in repos?) because I simply did not know which DE to use instead until I found TDE. I'm so glad KDE3 still exists. I bought a netbook 3 years ago and I installed Ubuntu Lenny with Gnome2 as there was a netbook-edition available and there was nothing comparable available for KDE3. I got used to work with it but I'm not really happy with the lack of functionallity and the way it could be customized. I installed the next version (Maverick?) for a friend of mine again with the netbook edition and know what? even there you saw regression in Gnome2 (Nautilus no longer had the address text field available showing the path where you are (don't know the correct name for this)). With Gnome3, it's getting even worse. At work I had to upgrade the Linux system to KDE4 2 years ago. A few guys were working via VNC on this system. What worked well on KDE3 for years was totally strange on KDE4. VNC server / client have been totally broken with the new graphics rendering of KDE4. I found Tiger-VNC program that helped a bit but I could net really got accustomed to KDE4. I now have upgraded to Lenny LTS and downgraded KDE4 to TDE happily! For me, there is no alternative to KDE3 / TDE. If you really drop it I would try to use the existing version as long as possible. Yes, there is room for improvement, e.g. the following 3 items come to mind: - Konqueror more and more has problems to render actuall Web-pages, it would be very nice if we could switch from KHTML to Webkit as I don't think that the effort to renew KHTML libraries could be done. - For using TDE on netbooks the screen size of a lot of dialogs is simply too big for the available screen estate and they can't be reduced. Bear in mind that especially netbooks could greatly take advantage from KDE3. - What I find totally anoying is the way how self-mounted external devices are named. Instead of using simply the names you find by using the mount command (/media/something), you find some system:/media/other-thing! As I'm often still using the command line I can not simply copy the location out of Konquerors address bar but have instead to use mount to get it's correct location. ------------ As you easily see I'm no native speaker. I hope I was able to make myself at least understandable. I'd like to take the opportunity to say a big THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Tim and all the others who made Trinity a reality. Please go on with the good work! A happy TDE user Gerhard

[trinity-users] Most kdesu problems seem fixed
by David Hare 09 Feb '12

09 Feb '12

Not everyone, particularly Debian users, wants sudo globally enabled. There are numerous kdesu bugs, possibly related. I posted another only today. This issue has been my most major usability annoyance with TDE from the beginning and till today was unresolved. I just found, quite by accident, this one, titled "startkde (starttde) needs updating" http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=675 The solution (for 3.5.13, in /opt/trinity/bin/startkde) is simply: 112a113,114 > ### out ## > 114,116c116,128 < if [ -z "$KDEROOTHOME" ] && [ "$UID" = "0" ]; then < echo "[startkde] User ID is $UID. Now, no more dcopserver crashes. Gksu, sux and su-to-root -C work. I can set a different appearance for root instances of kwrite,konq,.. Not fully tested yet but good so far. Move from Lenny and KDE to Squeeze and TDE
by Lisi 06 Feb '12

06 Feb '12

A few months ago, when my desktop turned its toes up and went skywards to its rest, I started to use my testbed machine as a temporary desktop. It was already running Squeeze and TDE, so I moved my mail folders and set out to use it. My emails simply wouldn't display, and when I installed Lenny on this machine I found that said emails had been mauled. Fortunately, I had three copies and the third was fine. So far, so good. Now Lenny has been pensioned off. (Well, will have been by tomorrow.) I clearly have to face Squeeze and TDE again. But I want my email; emails, folders and all. I can find no reference to anything other than what I did, and it is not impossible that the HDD was faulty and that that is the problem. I have searched on Google, but so far as I can tell, I did the right thing. So please, before I dive in again, and this time I would not be able to retreat to Lenny, can I have all and any advice on how to save my emails? Other than take a large number of copies, which I shall do anyway. Thanks, Lisi

LXDE, TDE and KMail - can I achieve what I would like to do?
by Lisi 02 Feb '12

02 Feb '12

My husband's desktop died pretty conclusively at the beginning of teh mirror outage. Not knowing about the outage, I set out to install Squeeze + TDE. Without success, of course. I tried David's offering, which I liked very much and had help from several people on this list, but had not succeeded in getting it all running properly when my husband came home. So I installed LXDE so that he could use Thunderbird to read his emails. He has fallen for the speed of LXDE, and, for once, doesn't mind having to work differently. He wants to keep LXDE. I therefore have a lot of TDE dependencies, but no actual TDE packages. 1) If I install the rest of TDE at this stage, so that it is there if needed, will it impact at all on LXDE's speed of booting up and shutting down? I had been intending, as part of the reinstall, to move him from Thunderbird to KMail. In KMail, it is easier to remove virus-laden emails, before he sends them on to Windows using friends, without damaging or altering other emails. And I know it a lot better, and can more readily answer questions. 2) Would using Kmail slow LXDE down at all? I have so far failed to work out a method for Peter to be able to get his emails in KMail without inputting a password. One used to be able to store the necessary login details and passwords in KMail, as one can in Thunderbird. For a while now, that has not been possible, and one has to go via KWallet, which demands a password. 3) Is there a workaround which would allow KMail to download the email from Gmail without any password being input?? One method would be to go back to using the ISP's POP3 server, instead of going via Gmail, as I have for a while now. But I would like to be able to continue sending his emails via Gmail. And log-in details would then need to be saved somewhere. Thanks, Lisi

Firefox crashes EVERY time I try to save anything. Whether its a file download or a picture.. its goes boom. It did this sometimes when I ran TDE x.x..12 in ubuntu 10.10 but not that often. Now its all the time. Has anyone encountered this issue as well?

KDM Bug?
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 28 Jan '12

28 Jan '12

Could somebody please verify on Debian/Wheezy: Running KDM select FVWM (or any other WM) as sessiontype. Log in, FVWM starts but trerminates immediatle. .xsession-errors says, that an other WM is already running and FVWM should be started with "-replace". Nik -- Mag. reordering Documents list in Kate
by Calvin Morrison 28 Jan '12

Hi, is it possible to reorder documents within kate's Documents side bar? I know you can sort them, but I often would like to be able to change this. I think I am just missing an obvious option. Calvin
