Do you have anything in /opt/trinity/share/dconf/profile/user
by Jim 21 Nov '24

21 Nov '24

Hi, I have TDE 14.1.1 installed on Slackware64 15.0. Firefox keeps spitting out error messages like this: Unable to open /opt/trinity/share/dconf/profile/user: Permission denied: 'glib warning', file /tmp/firefox-128.4.0/toolkit/xre/nsSigHandlers.cpp:187 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1410879 seems to indicate that firefox is looking in /opt/trinity/share/... because /opt/trinity/share is in the XDG_DATA_DIRS environment variable. In my Slackware version of TDE, there is no directory /opt/trinity/share/dconf at all, which (partially) explains why firefox is whining. But it got me wondering... can someone (or multiple people) who use another distro let me know if you have anything in /opt/trinity/share/dconf, and, if so, would you mind sending me a listing of what files are in there? Thanks. Jim

Darkness :) Remaster of devuan testing + TDE + dark theme for AMD64
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 20 Nov '24

20 Nov '24

Hi all! I just uploaded my last devuan testing + TDE 14.2 remaster - this time with a dark theme (including kate) - and it finally got a name (darkness). I would be interested if you run into issues with it. Thread on devuan: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=6850 ISO: https://samhain.at/devuan_tde/darkness-20240918.iso SHA256: https://samhain.at/devuan_tde/darkness-20240918.iso.sh256 SHA256: 97c6c6fbf3d49bfc9b9231f586a1143da8761cfe9657dcb72676793c3b693856 Background is done by myself, so if anybody wants to include it in TDE (or highres versions of my deviantart.com/zwieblum gallery) just drop me a note. Enjoy :) Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

Trying to install TDE on a (relatively) old Debian (9.13)
by Thierry de Coulon 19 Nov '24

19 Nov '24

Hallo all. I'm re-setting up an old machine (a core 2 quad from 15 xears ago) and wanted to use a somewhat older distribution. I decided for Stretch and managed to find the online repos for older Debians. I then wantes to install trinity (from the website it seems 14.1.1 should be available, I also tried 14.0.0). I followed the instructions for repositories, however when I run install tde-trinity, I get dependency hell Several packages have unmet dependencies, for example Depends : tde-core-trinity (>= 4:14.0.0~) but it is not going to be installed Another weirdness is that aptitude has no installation candidate. I suppose apt or apt-get can be used instead. An idea? Thierry

XF86Mail opens the email client if and only if it is mapped to an "Input Action"
by Davide Baldini 18 Nov '24

18 Nov '24

If a keyboard shortcut is defined for an "Input Action" (Trinity Control Center -> Regional & Accessibility -> Input Actions) and the triggering key is XF86Mail, then pressing the XF86Mail button opens the email client regardless of what action is assigned to it. If the action is deleted or assigned to a different shortcut, the mail program does not open when pressing XF86Mail. This started happening a few days ago after an apt-get upgrade on Debian. # dpkg -s tde-trinity Version: 4:14.1.3-0debian12.0.0+0 -- Davide

compton-tde does not draw shadows?
by Andrew Randrianasulu 12 Nov '24

12 Nov '24

Hello, TDE users! I was more or less following TDE by compiling new version using https://github.com/ray-v/tde-slackbuilds/ on Slackware 15.0 i586 with 6.1.44 x64 self-compiled kernel and X11 installed into X11R7 I think it works generally OK but today I tried to add shadows using compton-tde and while I can make moving windows slightly transparent (so compositing itself works) I can't make shadows show up. I tried to put compton.conf I found on github into .config/compton-tde.conf but it apparently does not make a difference? Where default compton-tde.conf usually located? Second question - on xrandr resize (for example switching away from fullscreen mode in old SDL1 version of qemu) TDE likes to maximize by horizontal dimension all my windows! Probably something is misconfigured, but what exactly? Any ideas where to look? I prefer not to nuke my .kde ... (there was KDE3 previously)

how to set environment variable?
by D. R. Evans 10 Nov '24

10 Nov '24

I'm sure this is easy, but I haven't been able to find the right place to do it :-( How do I set the value of an environment variable so that when I run a program from the main T menu, the program will automatically get the correct value of the variable? I looked at Trinity Control Centre (which is where I expected to find something labelled "Environment Variables", or something similar) but I don't see anything like that there. DBus Issues
by Daniel Wilkins 06 Nov '24

06 Nov '24

Hi y'all, I'm running 14.1.2 (with some 14.1.3, some of the slackbuilds are broken,) on Slackware 15 and I've noticed an issue with flatpak apps. They were unable to access the keystore for me and after some debugging I found that in TDE the environment variables for dbus (DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS and PID) aren't set, where in environments which have working flatpak apps they are. Sure enough, dbus-launch [flatpak app] lets them launch successfully. I've found a couple of other weird bits which I think may be dbus related too. I've tried adding an "eval $(dbus-launch)" to my ~/.xprofile per what happens in starttde, I also tried adding it manually into the starttde script right around where tde_dbus_hardwarecontrol is invoked but I don't have the vars set in my actual session in either case. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks, Danny

openSUSE Leap 16.0
by Gianluca Interlandi 05 Nov '24

05 Nov '24

Dear TDE users, This may be off topic. It looks like the successor to Leap 15.6 will be Leap 16.0: https://get.opensuse.org/leap/16.0/ and it will be based on the Adaptable Linux Platform (ALP): https://en.opensuse.org/Features_16.0 The website states that Leap 16.0 will have a non-immutable version, although ALP does contain a "minimal, immutable operating system". I just wonder whether ALP will still be based on RPM. It may be too early to worry about it as Leap 16.0 will not be available until at least fall 2025. TDM not starting on Debian
by paperella＠duck.com 04 Nov '24

04 Nov '24

Hey there, just completed a fresh installation of Debian via netinstall with no other DE and added Trinity following the instructions on the wiki. Everything works - thank you for your efforts! - but I can't seem to start TDM. I have the package tdm-trinity installed, and using the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity, I can select it. Just to double check, the outcome of cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager is /opt/trinity/bin/tdm, so it's definitely there. Yet, when I power on the laptop, I am greeted by no DM at all. I have installed lightdm to see if that would give problems as well, but it works just fine, so I'm not sure what the problem with TDM could be. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you folks! :D

Touchpad app in control center
by Greg Madden 04 Nov '24

04 Nov '24

I have a Lenovo Legion laptop, running Debian stable and latest TDE stable. This a new install, been using Devuan & TDE. Systemd is needed by my VPN. The issue is my touchpad settings have changed. The cursor speed was to fast and the pressure sensing is to light. I just discovered the touch pad app in Control Center, very nice. Control Center touch pad configures the cursor speed, cool. My main need/request is a pressure sensitive adjustment. I have tried in the past on this laptop to make this adjustment, failed. Almost unusable with my numb fingers, would revert back to previous behavior if needed. thanks

Nano for Donations

I guess this is mainly for Slávek and Michele, but would you consider adding Nano (nano.org) as a donation option on the TDE site? I'd much prefer to use that over Bitcoin as it's more energy efficient, instant, and has no fees. I've used it for years without issue. I personally use and prefer https://nault.cc as a non-custodial wallet but there are others to choose from. https://blocklattice.io is a good block explorer if you're interested in seeing transactions. Kaffeine fails to load XineParts
by J Leslie Turriff 25 Oct '24

I finally got sound working after upgrading to openSUSE Leap 15.6 (Yay), but when I start Kaffeine to listen to some music, it says it can't load XineParts (unYay). I've attached the message that Kaffeine displays. It's not too helpful. In openSUSE Leap 15.6, sound is now controlled by PipeWire instead of PulseAudio. Could this have anything to do with my issue? Hi there everyone! Might as well join the party eh? I have created a live Debian ISO that currently tracks Debian Bookworm with the stable Trinity repository. It is based off live-build with a small modified selection of packages for a smooth experience. Any changes and updates will be pushed through the matrixOS repo, and I will take package requests for backports and such. I will also update the ISO to include the new Trinity release when that launches. What does it offer? - Fully working live experience - Calamares installer - Ready to go out of the box with a wide selection of software included - Our favorite desktop of choice - A mostly vanilla Trinity configuration I would really appreciate it if you wanted to check it out! https://www.matrixos.ca

TDE vs LXDE, LXQT and XFCE

I don't see how it's a TDE issue, but . . .
by dep 19 Oct '24

19 Oct '24

Hi, everybody . . . This is a weird one. It's under Debian testing, but it happened under Tapeworm, too. With TDE testing. Running LibreOffice 24.8.2.1. For close to 15 years, I've had "Insert hyperlink" in my RMB menu in text fields. With the updates (I think specifically of LibreOffice) but cannot be absolutely sure, it's still there. But clicking on it spawns a dialog box for character formatting. So I deleted it and replaced it. Same thing. Renamed ~/.config/libreoffice and reinstalled LibreOffice itself. Added "Insert hyperlink" to menu. Same thing. So I tred it on my notebook, also running testing/testing. Same thing. It is easier to configure the Linux kernel than it is to configure LibreOffice, because LibreOffice tries to allow for everything, no matter how unlikely, and gives it all equal weight. For instance, if you go to Tools > Customize > Context Menus, you have a choice of 49(!) menus you can edit. The fun part is that none of the menu names is reflected in the places where you would find those menus. Nor are the things controlled by them accessible. I'd rename the character formatting thing if I could find it, and see what happens then. But can't find the frigging thing. I'd use AbiWord, but it, like KWord and Calligra, seem to be pretty much abandoned, and in the case of the latter two developed by people who do not know what a word processor is for. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

recently, TDE slow to move files to trash
by D. R. Evans 10 Oct '24

10 Oct '24

As of a recent TDE update (sometime in the past month or less), moving files to trash has become painfully slow, with the operation typically taking tens of seconds instead of a second or two. This has happened in the past with remote disks mounted over ssh (there was a thread about this maybe two or three years ago), but now it is happening with local storage. Are other people seeing this? If not, any ideas what might be the problem? For the sake of completeness, I will make the "I haven't [knowingly] changed anything here" statement. Starting TDE apps from another DE?
by Thierry de Coulon 03 Oct '24

03 Oct '24

I've been taking a look at what KDE 5 had become. Actually, it was faster than I had expected (in the MX-Linux implementation). Not that I think about changing DE, but it raised a question: Running TDE, I have no problem starting KDE apps (Kdenlive or Kalzium for example) or xfce apps. But is it possible to start TDE apps from xfce or KDE (TDE's Konqueror as file browser would be usefull)? I suppose it is, but just starting the app fails, so I guess there must be some magic incantation required. Thierry

My new experimental fork of KGtk
by Riley Bell 03 Oct '24

03 Oct '24

As an experiment I forked the old KGtk software, stripped out kdialogd and replaced it with calls to libportal. This makes it desktop agnostic and allows GTK2 apps to use portals. It also contains fixes that can be backported to Trinity's KGtk-qt3. It's still far from stable however so I wouldn't recommend installing it outside of testing purposes. https://github.com/rjb330/portal-wrapper/ Attached screenshot shows portal-wrapper opening files in GIMP with the new xdg-desktop-portal-tde prototype. ------------------------------------------------- This free account was provided by VFEmail.net - report spam to abuse(a)vfemail.net ONLY AT VFEmail! - Use our Metadata Mitigator to keep your email out of the NSA's hands! $24.95 ONETIME Lifetime accounts with Privacy Features! 15GB disk! Another stupid question. Two, actually.
by dep 29 Sep '24

29 Sep '24

Have ordered Samsung PCIe SSD and the appropriate card for the X1 slot on my motherboard. The idea is to run everything that isn't /home from there. Writes would therefore be relatively few. It's 1tb, so there are wide open spaces for wear leveling. Should greatly reduce drive-caused slowness. All that isn't /home is on a 75gb partition on sda, and I thought I'd just dd it over. But then it occurred to me: wouldn't that create the problem of two drives with the same UUID? The second issue is keeping the contents of the backup boot partition, a partition on sda, in sync with the SSD. I looked at Raid 1, but I believe that requires starting with two or more blank disks, not something to be tacked on later, so that's out. Is there a fairly uncomplicated way of keeping their contents identical? Nice if automatic, but if I need to do it manually every week or two, so be it. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Well, this is new. Suddenly, with no changes to anything, KMail started throwing the error "Could not start process for imap." I have no idea where to begin to sort this out. Script genius needed
by dep 26 Sep '24

26 Sep '24

Some months ago I asked here if there were a way to log my ISP's downtime, and got a useful answer. Today I've been attempting to refine it a bit, and there is some progress, but not success. Here's what I have: [code] #!/bin/bash #monitor frontier communications downtime ping -i 3 -O -D 1.1.1.1 | while read row do awk '{ sub(/[0-9]{10}/, strftime("%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S", substr($0,2,10))) } 1' <<< "$row"| tee ~/frontier_downtime.log done [/code] Most of it is simply converting internet time to human time, because I might have to use it to support a complaint. It runs fine in a terminal, a nice ping and result every three seconds, but only writes the first line, the first ping result, to the logfile. (And yes, ir's probably sloppy.) What do I have wrong? Bonus question: any way to keep it running with the terminal closed? I can't even use & to free the terminal; I'd like to start the thing and have it cook merrrily away without a terminal open or even minimized, and use top or killall to dispose of it if that becomes necessary. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something obvious. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Configure can't find TQt
by christian.storzer＠posteo.net 26 Sep '24

26 Sep '24

Note: I've asked the same question per e-mail to the mailing list but the server seems to be down for a while, so if this crops up a second time just ignore. Hello everyone. First let me say thanks to everyone involved in this project, highly appreciated. I've compiled almost everything of the latest stable release on Void Linux and installed everything into /usr/local/stow/tde prefix. I use stow for stuff I compile myself (it makes symlinks into /usr/local). Almost everything of TDE compiled and works fine, but with koffice and some other remaining packages that are not built with cmake, those packages cannot find TQt3. Now the configure script does find tqt3 once: checking for tqt... yes checking TQt_CFLAGS... -DTQT_NO_ASCII_CAST -DTQT_NO_STL -DTQT_NO_COMPAT -DTQT_NO_TRANSLATION -DTQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -D_REENTRANT -include tqt.h -I/usr/include/qt3 -I/usr/local/stow/tde/include/tqt checking TQt_LIBS... -L/usr/local/stow/tde/lib64 -ltqt -ltqt-mt Detected TQt3. and then fails: checking for TQt... configure: error: TQt (>= TQt 3.3 and < 4.0) (library tqt-mt) not found. Please check your installation! For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Make sure that you have compiled TQt with thread support! Here is a complete config.log: https://pastebin.com/h7YYQ7rg I've tried looking at the FreeBSD and gentoo compile scripts and tried different ./configure options, I've tried compiling tqt3 and tqt3-interface again with all options I found in the compile scripts and put them into a seperate prefix and tried configure with the extra-lib-dir options. etc. Any ideas? Thanks!

Screenshot including mouse cursor?
by dep 25 Sep '24

25 Sep '24

The TDE screenshot application has no facility I can find for including the mouse cursor in the picture, which is how we most always want our screenshots. But for illustrative reasons I'd like to make a couple that include it. The current KDE screenshot has a checkbox to include it, but for some reason it doesn't work here. Anybody know of a way I can do it? dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Pointers on pointers?
by dep 23 Sep '24

23 Sep '24

Greets, everybody . . . The Debian install seems to be working just fine but for a couple littlish hiccups: It didn't fix the occasional weirdness where my keyboard doesn't recognize some keys and seems endlessly stuck with others, which is fixed, for days, by a reboot. Changing keyboards doesn't help. For more than a decade, there has been no problem with a link from a directory on the second hard drive to my /home directory. Now it won't and instead throws an error saying it's trying to overwrite itself. All this means is that I have to kind of set it up every time and can't go directly to it with the file manager. Partition is mounted at /media/sdb1 and I have the permissions needed. Weird. Kmail crashes fairly frequently, reason unknown. Maybe Debian has a mail users setting. Haven't looked, and I can send and receive okay. The crash reporter, best I can tell, has never served any useful purpose. But that's not what I'm here to ask about. I'm *still* trying to find where the mouse pointers found in the Mouse > Cursor themes in KControl are located on the drive. If I knew what they are called I could do a locate, but I don't. I hope to take a pre-existing set, one that I don't and won't ever use, and experiment a little bit with it. In the happy long-ago days of OS/2, there was an actual OS/2 application -- $35, and I bet I'm the only one who bought a copy -- that not only let you design your own pointers easily, but let you put the hot pixel wherever you wanted and, more important and what I'd ideally like to achieve, let you color them such that wherever you were on the screen, the pointer would be the opposite of the color beneath it. On the fly. Instantly. Always. Totally visible. I do not know if X even allows anything like this, but it's worth wasting a day over. Even if that isn't possible, I'd like to pull some of them up in the icon editor and change their colors so that they are really, really visible. But I can't break them because I can't find where they live! Anyone know? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

[SOLVED] Pointer on pointers
by dep 21 Sep '24

21 Sep '24

On a Debian install, anyway, they're in /usr/share/icons, in /[directory name]/cursors. Now trying to figure out how to make the I-beam cursor in LibreOffice (or anything else; same problem in KWord, Abiword, and Calligra) much bolder. It's damn near invible and has been a problem for years. LibreOffice says to change it in Windows accessibility. I hope they step barefoot on a Lego left three steps up on the stairs. It is said there is some gtk setting that might fix it, but no one seems to know where or how. If it's hard coded, move that Lego to the ninth step. I think there used to be a KDE or TDE compatability package for LibreOffice, but if memory serves it was dropped years ago, and I don't know if it let TDE or Qt or something override the cursors. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Darkness :) Remaster of devuan testing + TDE + dark theme for AMD64

Hi all! I just uploaded my last devuan testing + TDE 14.2 remaster - this time with a dark theme (including kate) - and it finally got a name (darkness). Outlook woes
by Thierry de Coulon 15 Sep '24

15 Sep '24

I don't like Outlook, unfortunately that's what my school uses. For now I use Prospect Mail to acces this mail (and it does work correctly, although the interface is terrible - seems to be a clone of Outlook's). My global problem is that when they send a mail to my outlook address, I don't know it. I had found a nice way to live with it, by redirecting (forwarding) the mail from Outlook to kmail (I still have to use Prospect Mail to send an answer because since they ativated two factor authentication Outlook's smtp refuses me). Now, for some reason I cannot fathom, they have blocked redirection. Getting mail from Outlook from kmail fails (I guess because of two factor authentication). I have not been able to imagine a way to make Prospect Mail tell me that I received mail (and anyway it's not running all the time). I wanted to try Mailspring, but it wants to store my credentials in a keyring, and although I have both gnome-keyring and libsecret installed (courtesy of MX-Linux I suppose), Mailspring does not find them (and mailspring --password-store= does not work, either with libsecret, gnome-keyring or tdewalletmanager-trinity). So, as several of you recently praised the help offered by this mailing list, maybe I am in luck and one of you has some advice to offer on the subject? Would it be possible to start Prospect mail (cron job?) and get some information about new incomming mails? Thierry

And on Friday the 13th, too!
by dep 14 Sep '24

Happy and stunned to say that the de-Ubuntu-ization has been going better than I had any right to expect. The whole setting up of "sudo" was a pain -- not stuff you're likely to remember when you do it once every many years -- and some various flaky stuff. Otoh, the easiest nvidia driver install in history, so I'll take it. Many, many things I expected to be hell to reconfigure . . . made it through the switch. My background is xplanet, as always, with a high-res moon picture that I see has a timestamp of Dec. 26, 1998 -- I seem to be set in my ways. One surprise is that may be a bug. In the reduced version of the preview TDE, KMenu does not seem to be installed by default. I do not know whether that was intentional -- can't imagine it would be -- but unless one knows to go to the panel applets and find and put it on Kicker, there's no application menu. Now, a question: Where is the Basket note pads application for TDE? Has its name changed? It is one of those applications out with which I cannot do. (Clear back to DOS, when I was addicted to InfoSelect -- indeed, many of the notes there were transferred from InfoSelect to something else inferior on Linux before Basket came along.) Is there a version, for TDE, someplace? Related, what's a good repository browser? I've used Synaptic for the 20 years I used Kubuntu, and, well, Ubuntu. Anybody have recommendations? Thanks! -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Stupid key question
by dep 13 Sep '24

13 Sep '24

So, before trying the correct method (which is strangely made difficult by my maching now refusing to boot from USB for no reason I can find), I thought I would try to switch to Debian via a strange recipe that probably won't work: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/344408/migrate-from-ubuntu-to-debi… Problem is the Debian pubkey, which does not exist on my machine. The keyring stuff in the recipe does not, best I can tell, resemble current reality. Of course, without it the whole apt-get business explodes in a cloud of unsignedness. Anybody know where I can get the Debian pubkey? dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

how to find & format a lost SSD?
by William Morder 10 Sep '24

10 Sep '24

My internal 2 tb SSD has suddenly become "locked"; even though I myself didn't lock it. The good people at Mc$haft started nagging me about enabling UEFI partitioning, but I had managed to get round that by using grub instead. Now, however, that 2 tb SSD will not mount at all as a separate drive. When I try to boot from a Devuan installation USB, that works just fine, as usual ... *unless* that 2 tb USB is present in the system. I get a window asking for a password to unlock it. I never set a password for this SSD, nor an admin password (for the boot process) until the system started asking me to set one. I did manage to back up all the data on that SSD before this happened, but now I can only boot the system from a 250 gb USB, where I have installed my Devuan system, with root, swap and home partitions, and it runs nearly perfectly, just like always ... or usually always, until crap like this happens. This SSD I bought specially to put in the laptop in order to replace the factory-installed 128 gb SSD. The original factory SSD will only boot into Mc$haft's registration process. This newer SSD, where for the past couple years I have had my system installed, been running fine, will not boot at all. When it is present at boot, I cannot boot an installation USB or disc, cannot boot a repair disc, cannot even boot my home partition (the one now installed on the USB) if that 2 tb USB is present. I tried a sort of dangerous hardware hack, which was to open up the laptop, and hotplug the 2 tb SSD, just to see if the system would recognize it. So here is (are) my question(s): Can I get the system to recognize this 2 tb SSD. It is plugged in, but doesn't appear? Do I need to buy some sort of gadget (an enclosure or something?) so that I can plug in the SSD as if it were a USB drive? Can I somehow reformat this 2 tb SSD without buying more stuff? Any help will be appreciated! Bill

Regarding setting wallpapers on multiple virtual desktops
by riru 09 Sep '24

09 Sep '24

Hello, I've been trying to set different slideshow wallpapers with hue shift blending on my virtual desktops (I currently have 4). But, for some reason, when switching to the first virtual desktop, I notice a bit of lag before Trinity switches to it. I don't know how are wallpapers managed internally on Trinity but that seems like it's trying to reload the wallpaper again or something? By the way, I'm new to the this mailing list, actually I've never written to one before, if I've missed any kind of netiquette or something like that please let me know. Cheers.

Partitioning advice sought
by dep 04 Sep '24

04 Sep '24

Hi, everybody . . . The time has come to say goodbye to Ubuntu once and for all. The spyware, security updates being held hostage, and inescapable attachment to the proprietary snap packages were bad enough. The new version of ProtonVPN doesn't work on Ubuntu 20.04, the last marginally acceptable version. So Debian looms. I'm trying to make it easier by replacing the mess of hard drives with a single 16-tb Toshiba enterprise drive. The plan is to install Debian on it, then copy /home, etc., to it. The old drives will then be backups. (I also have a 10-tb drive devitoted to pictures; that drive, too, will go into the backup safe.) The last time I did anything like this, a few years ago, it involved a peculiar recipe that, fortunately, doesn't apply now. And I realize that I've never done a straight install of a big drive to an EFI system. So. First, I'm trying to remember how to do a fill low-level check of the drive, to knock out any bad sectors, etc. I don't think GParted does it. Second, I'm trying to figure out how to best partition the thing, to get it to boot properly. I know there needs to be a dinky FAT32 partition someplace. What I don't know is where it should be and what size it should be. After that I'll have a non-home partition and a /home partition, as well as /swap. Is there any new thought as to the ideal size of the swap partition? Machine has 32 gigs of memory, and I do not keep a huge number of applications open at once, but I will have a lot of drive space. Any settled preference as to the location of the swap partition? (I remember that in OS/2 the rule was the most-used partition of the least-used drive. Speaking of which, there's a small walk down OS/2 memory lane here: https://ofb.biz/safari/article/1240.html ) It would be pretty straightforward but for the wad of stuff up top re. EFI, big drive, etc., with which I have next-to-no experience. Advice? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

My gmane access to these lists has almost devolved into a read-only situation. It seems I can do a new post -- as I did successfully yesterday "Subject: Trying to install Trinity 14.1" .. to which I received a accurate and polite answer. However, when I tried to do a followup for a "Thank You!" (twice I tried), I see there was no posting of THAT item. My gmane access date back to the _OLD_ gmane.org days and I have no memory of how my subscription has been carried forward to what I'm having trouble with today. Searching the web, and https://trinitydesktop.org/ , and the https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/ website yields no results for how to join the lists. Just how does one get on to the users and devel Trinity discussion lists? I wish to do it with a much cleaner, less convoluted email addy and profile. (As you can see, my email addy was setup for the bad ol' days when usenet was a harvest location for spammers.) Thanks! TDM not passing login information?
by Darrell Anderson 29 Aug '24

29 Aug '24

I'm looking for confirmation about whether TDM passes login information to the operating system. For me the who, w, and last commands do not show any tty logins when using TDM. The who, w, and last commands function as expected with SDDM, showing tty logins. (pts logins are irrelevant.) Also, are there any specific tdmrc options that might cause this? Thanks.

Help setting mouse accel multiplier below 1x
by bonkmaykr 14 Aug '24

14 Aug '24

Hello, TDE does not have a proper sensitivity option, only acceleration. I was going to set the accel threshold to 0 pixels and then set the max accel, which should effectively do the same thing as changing sensitivity. But TDE does not allow it to go below 100%. This needs to be below 100% because I have a high CPI mouse (1600hz). I set it to 43%. As a workaround, I have been using `xinput set-prop` to handle my mouse sensitivity. I've written in a previous post to this mailing list, but to reiterate, this is NOT a perfect solution because setting the pointer speed within XOrg directly interferes with many video games (prettymuch any first-person shooter game) and creative applications (Blender, Bryce 3D). see video: https://bonkmaykr.worlio.com/media/THE_FINALS_X11CursorSnapBug.mp4 Notice how when i set my desktop pointer speed to 43% from the terminal, the game snaps my cursor to the edge of the screen when it is trying to snap it to the center. Is there a config file I can edit directly to get around this? Thanks in advance, bonkmaykr

Would this work with TDE?
by dep 13 Aug '24

13 Aug '24

Greets, everybody . . . Insomnia led me to this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6C8QTf7GLfs In case you don't want to watch it (though Christopher Barnatt is highly enjoyable), it is the quick and easy construction of an ARM desktop PC, which seems pretty cool and which is both inexpensive and uses next to no electricity. It automagically installs Debian with KDE. My desktop machine is approaching 10 years old. Some drives will need replacement soon. Seeing this video, I wondered if a different approach might be in order. But I'm unclear as to the cross compatibility of the architectures. There are a few concerns I have, the two main ones being the Proton applications and TDE. (I've been spoiled in that almost everything -- but not Proton stuff -- has worked perfectly on the Raspberry Pi.) So, there being substantial knowledge here, I have a question: Why is it a bad idea to build an ARM-based desktop machine? Thanks. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

korganizer bug? Can someone let me know if this works for them?
by Jim 07 Aug '24

07 Aug '24

Hi, According to the manual for korganizer, I can add another calendar ("resource") to my view as follows: Procedure 3.1. Adding a New KOrganizer Resource If the resource view is not available on KOrganizer's sidebar, choose the Settings->Sidebar->Show Resource View menu item to display it. However, when I go to Settings->Sidebar there is no "Show Resource View" there. This is TDE 14.1.1 running on Slackware64. Can someone who uses korganizer (or wants to fire it up) tell me if they see a resource view anywhere. Thanks. Jim

New Debian-based Trinity Live ISO
by jacobheinrich＠hotmail.com 04 Aug '24

04 Aug '24

Hey everyone, I was installing Trinity on a new laptop the other day and realized "Wow, I don't enjoy the process of installing an OS and DE separately". So I decided to take it upon myself and create a live-build of Debian with my favorite software included. So far the website is a work in progress, but the Iatest built ISO is fully functional so far. It is a mostly stock Debian install with Trinity and a few configuration changes for a fully working system out of the box. You can download it at: https://DildOS.wiki DildOS stands for "Damn I Love Debian Operating System"

problems with apt & aptitude
by William Morder 16 Jul '24

16 Jul '24

The electric power went out in my building overnight while I was asleep, having left my laptop running, and when I awoke I couldn't boot it up again, but was forced to reinstall my system. (And here was I just congratulating myself on having gone about 8 months without any major changes, much less disasters.) My installation did not go well. Maybe it's because I hadn't done it in awhile; as well as the fact that I am too busy to be bothered with this crap just now, yet I still need a working machine in order to keep my life together. In all, I think I tried 11 times (yes, eleven!) to get my system reinstalled and reconfigured. It doesn't go so well when there are other important matters that also claim my attention. The problems with reinstallation do not seem to involve Trinity as such. For some unknown reason, the XFCE desktop has messed up my settings, so that I was unable to find my network, etc.; so instead, I used MATE to finish the installation, then installed my TDE packages. After I got to that stage, I was back in familiar territory, and all seemed to be going well.... Anyway, so I got it up and running, everything looks right, just finishing up, installing all those other packages that can wait. And now, I get this weird error message: sudo apt-get -f install apt-get: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libapt-private.so.0.0: undefined symbol: _ZN11pkgDepCache24IncreaseActionGroupLevelEv, version APTPKG_6.0 I don't know what this means, and I am unable to use apt utilities, apt-get, aptitude, etc. I can still install packages using dpkg, but without knowing how to solve this problem, it seems pointless to keep on trying to make it work. After 11 attempts at reinstallation throughout today, I am at my wits' end, and really do not want to undertake yet another reinstallation. If anybody knows of a way to solve this issue, I will be for ever grateful. Bill

How did Firefox running in Trinity suddenly become full screen?
by Chris Austin 14 Jul '24

14 Jul '24

Hello, I was in the middle of making a donation to a non-profit, in Firefox running in Trinity, when suddenly, for no apparent reason, Firefox became full screen, and there seemed to be no way to get out of it. I presume I must accidentally have typed some key combination that caused it. Does anyone know what key combination that would be? And once it happened, how to get out of it? I had already entered my debit card details, etc, and now, not only had Firefox become full screen, but the top part of the Firefox window, including the address bar, had vanished as well. The ENTIRE screen was now taken up by the main display area of Firefox. The Trinity panel, which I always have at the bottom of the screen, had vanished, and there was no way to get it back. It was very alarming, because all my debit card details were there in the Firefox window, now taking up the entire screen, and I could not even see the Firefox address bar, to check that the green padlock was still there, and there was no green padlock to click on, to check it really was secure, and it really was the correct website. I desperately tried various key combinations including esc and other keys, but nothing worked, until eventually, possibly ctrl + alt + esc, I am not sure, the x mouse pointer appeared, and I must have clicked on the Firefox window with that, although I don't remember doing so, because eventually that full screen Firefox window started to vanish, and the Trinity panel came back into view. I guess the fact that the top part of the Firefox window vanished as well, so the entire screen was taken up by the main display area of Firefox, might indicate that this is a Firefox issue, rather than a Trinity issue, so this might be the wrong forum. Sorry if that's the case. I have been using Trinity continuously since about March 2017, and I think it's really great. Nothing like this has ever happened before. Thanks. With best wishes, Chris Austin

How to turn off tdegtk?
by J Leslie Turriff 12 Jul '24

Somehow I've mangled the tdegtk configuration in my main user account (I think I was trying to get rid of the warnings; see below). Now it's preventing my favourite text editor from running. I tried to remove ~/.themes/tdegtk/gtk-3.0/tdegtk.css (attached; fails at line 299) but it just comes back when I re-login. How can I disable it? How to configure Sysguard app in panel?
by Mike Bird 11 Jul '24

11 Jul '24

It's probably ten years or more since I configured the Sysguard app in one of my panels. Today I wanted to change the config. I found I could remove a display but I could only add blank displays which I could find no way to configure. It took me three hours but eventually I succeeded by restoring my ~/.trinity/share/apps/ksysguard/KSysGuardApplet.xml from backup and then manually editing it WHILE TRINITY WAS NOT RUNNING. Is there a better way to configure the Sysguard app in a panel? --Mike

How dead is Trinity and is it worth contributing to?
by Riley Bell 04 Jul '24

04 Jul '24

I love TDE and want to contribute to it but is it worth it? I've been in the devels mailing list for a couple weeks now and there haven't been any new messages. There are many applications I can't find in TGW like kmilo. The Project RoadMap on the wiki has a warning of being outdated. Is there a reason certain repositories haven't had a non-translation related commit in years? It seems improvements outside the scope of bug fixes and the migration to CMake are stalled indefinitely due to issues with adding support for Qt4? Why not drop it and try for Qt5/6 instead? Can the migration to Webkit for HTML rendering be done without Qt4 support? How hard would it be to make a style plugin for Qt5/6? I currently use gtk-qt-engine-trinity with qt5-gtk2-platformtheme as a workaround but it would be nice to have reliable, native support. crash reports
by Wossog 03 Jul '24

03 Jul '24

Hello, I use Trinity with Linux Artix and am actually happy with it. But there are a few small things that bother me, like the constant crash reports regarding Konqueror. I know this from earlier (KDE 3), but not from any current distribution. Since I can't do anything about it anyway, can I stop this pop-up window? Thanks, Michael

Where does REGULAR TDE's KMAIL store emails?
by CHRIS M 30 Jun '24

30 Jun '24

Hello Ya'll, I can't find where TDE KMAIL in Regular TDE stores its emails? What I mean by "Regular TDE" is: I installed Debian 12 with a minimal XFCE install, then installed TDE on top of that. In Q4OS, TDE KMAIL stored emails under "~/home/chris/.tdeconfig/share/ ".......something like that...... Thanks, Chris -- Sent with Vivaldi Mail. Download Vivaldi for free at vivaldi.com

Installing TDE
by CHRIS M 27 Jun '24

27 Jun '24

Okay folks! I did a nuke and pave and installed DEBIAN 12, but I had to install KDE, because I couldn't figure out how to install TDE due to a certain step in the directions: I just wanted to get some clarification before I decided to install TDE: deb http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-r14.1.x <your-distribution-release-name> main deps Which would be for me: deb http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-r14.1.x bookworm main deps But, I don't think putting 14.1 is correct? Or does it matter? If I put 14.1 would TDE update itself from this old version to the newest version? Thanks, Chris

Issue compiling TWin decorations
by neeeeow＠protonmail.com 24 Jun '24

24 Jun '24

Hello all, I am wanting to port over some old KDE 3 KWin themes over to TDE. To ensure that I have all of the build dependencies present, I wanted to try compiling some of the already existing TWin themes. For this, I wanted to try compiling twin-style-fahrenheit (found here: https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/TDE/twin-style-fahrenheit). In terms of packages, I installed trinity-tdesdk & trinity-twin-devel, so I should have everything required to compile the TWin theme. For compiling, I followed the instructions laid out in the wiki (https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/How_to_Build_TDE_Core_Modules#Notes), however when I try to compile the decoration, cmake throws out the following error: "'twin' is required, but is not installed nor selected for build". Could someone point me in the right direction? I am running Fedora 40 as well as the newest version of TDE (R14.1.2). For what it's worth, I also fired up TDE on openSUSE in a VM, and I have the same issue. Many thanks!

It does put the email into the OUTBOX for a few seconds. But at the very bottom of KMAIL you can see the progress bar moving towards to 100% and then the email is moved to the SENT folder. Where before, When you hit the send button on the composer window, the email was just saved to the OUTBOX and I had to manually hit the SEND QUEUED EMAIL BY..... button, then selecting the Fastmail account. ============================================================ THANKS IN ADVANCE! advice needed re. a ping/log app
by dep 22 Jun '24

22 Jun '24

greetings, everybody. living out in the woods, i am cursed by having to use frontier communications dsl for phone/internet. the phone is voip, so when the internet is down everything is down. there is no cellular service here. so when it does gown i have to drive 10 miles to a cell signal and sit in my car while over the course of a couple hours i end up getting no satisfaction from "support" located in a part of the world where english is not the first language. the internet goes down multiple times daily, usually for a few minutes but often more. it goes down for a few seconds multiple times each hour. it has been this way for years. it is my intention to make a formal complaint, and to do this i need to provide proof. unless there's a better method, i need to come up with an application that runs all the time and pings, say, cloudfare at 1.1.1.1, every few seconds and logs the results. it would be helpful if the logs were readily readable. there seem to be several such applications, but the ones i can find are for windows and seem to be overkill, logging numerous things i don't need. i just need to log this particular datum, in pretty fine detail, for a long period of time, on a linux machine. anyone know if there is such a thing and if so, what it would be? i would love if there were a tde utility that did this, but i don't know if such exists. thanks! -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Abandoning KMAIL
by CHRIS M 21 Jun '24

21 Jun '24

I am going to have to give up on KMAIL. Its back to doing that weird thing that I talked about a couple weeks ago, where as soon as I am done writing my email, I hit the envelope with the green > on it, and instead of just sending it, it puts it in the LOCAL FOLDERS OUTBOX, I then have to switch to OUTBOX and then hit the button I added to my toolbar that says " SEND QUEUED MAIL VIA....." and select Fastmail. That issue stopped for awhile and as soon as I hit the send button with the green > on it, the email skipped the OUTBOX and sent itself, and then put a copy into the sent folder. ============================================================ THANKS IN ADVANCE! Programs unable to tell where center of screen is when snapping mouse pointer
by bonkmaykr 21 Jun '24

21 Jun '24

Hello. I have a pretty serious issue where many applications cannot properly move the cursor to the center of the screen. For normal desktop use this rarely comes up, but I play a lot of video games on my computer (mostly first person) and for mouse input this becomes an inconvenience at best and gamebreaking at worst. Some examples, results vary: CS2: usually no issues. Running natively The Finals: cursor constantly snaps to top left corner when comms wheel is pulled up, can't use pings correctly. Cursor rarely leaves the screen and enters the second screen on the left causing loss of focus. Minecraft: cursor snaps to the left when opening any menu, even when running using a native JVM In some particularly nasty cases, this can affect camera controls on some desktop applications like Blender and cause erratic movement. Which slows down my workflow quite a bit. It seems like what's happening is that the X11 server has one display spanning across both my monitors and since I have a second monitor on the left the center of the X11 canvas is between the two displays. For other desktop environments this hasn't been an issue but in Trinity I find that this causes some weird sideeffects, like how desktop icons are out-of-bounds by default or how X11 thinks my refresh rate is set to 50hz even though it clearly isn't. What's the quickest workaround to this mouse input issue? Is there any? How do I tell an application/game that the center of my monitor is actually the center of my monitor and not whatever x11 says it is? If that makes any sense. Forgive me if this is a silly question. \-- [bonkmaykr.xyz][] Proud webmaster of KangWorlds. Sent from Proton Mail mobile [bonkmaykr.xyz]: https://bonkmaykr.xyz

WAS~~Re: Possible KMAIL bug? NOW:~~ POP / IMAP PROTOCOLS
by CHRIS M 07 Jun '24

07 Jun '24

You know, I had thought about switching to the IMAP protocol due to being able to switch to any email client I wanted to without having to constantly IMPORT and EXPORT my data. That's really the only PITA part, (pardon my expression) about POP. It just seems like life would be A LOT less stressful without having to worry about if I backed my email up or I decide to try a new email client and I don't have to piece together archive folders from one client to another etc. But OTOH, I do enjoy that my data is PRIVATE and that my mail provider can't pull a *YAHOO MAIL * and be like one day " Eh, you don't need those emails in your archive folder from 2016 / 2017. * POOF DELETED* without even asking the user if its okay. I know that, a hosted email provider WON'T DO THAT to someone, since we pay for the product to keep our valuable emails stored for us. Then again, look at what happened to poor Rackspace last year. Their Exchange server got hacked and had to pay ransom to get peoples data back and people still lost a lot of their emails that they had in the cloud. Do ya'll think its worth it? ============================================================ > THANKS IN ADVANCE! > > CHRIS > > CHRIS(a)CWM030.COM > > * Lenovo ThinkCentre M710q*~~~* 1 TB SSD*~~~*15.5 GiB of ram* > > ~~* Q4OS Trinity Edition* ~~

Display configuration troubles
by Thierry de Coulon 07 Jun '24

07 Jun '24

I use a Lenovo X390, MX-Linux 21.3, with one user using xfce (the "original" DE) and the other using TDE. When I plug in HDMI (for a beamer, in this case), xfce can easily be set up to mirror the display. When I use TDE and connect the Beamer (seen as HDMI-2), TDE automatically extends my screen to the beamer. xrandr -- output HDMI-2 --same-as eDP1 (where eDP-1 is the internal screen) does mirror the screen, but it remains extended. Now if I run "Configure Displays" and select "Enable local Display control for this session" (which was not activated), I do get the mirroring I am looking for. But if I click "Apply" the screen turn to psychedelic colours - seems to be wating for me to validate the choice, what I can't do and anyway would not as it's unusable. After a while the sceens returns to my desktop, albeit stil psychedelic, and I must log out / log in to get my desktop back. So for the time being that means I have to use xfce when I need the beamer. Anyone knows what's going on and what I should do to mirror my 1920x1080 screen to the HDMI beamer? Thierry

Intel SSD with openSUSE 15.5

Dear TDE users, This maybe unrelated to TDE. I wonder whether anybody has experience installing openSUSE 15.5 (along TDE of course) on a Intel SSD 2 TB. I was thinking about something like this: https://www.cdw.com/product/wd-blue-sa510-wds200t3b0a-ssd-2-tb-sata-6gb-s/7… The system is a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop. If anybody has any other recommendations for a SSD to be used on a similar laptop, please let me know. Also, is there really any speed advantage to using the corresponding mechanical hard drive: https://www.cdw.com/product/wd-blue-wd20spzx-hard-drive-2-tb-sata-6gb-s/507… in such a system? If you have a Discord, great, go ahead and join. If its not your thing, lets discuss that elsewhere. There is a large Linux community on Discord, and im hoping to be able to spread the reach of the TDE project. Discord is a fun platform to discuss these things.

Proposed Kicker Wallpapers

If interested then download the tar file and copy the files there. I have been using black_flat, black_glass, blue_glass with different user accounts for more than a year. Side note: I am not enthusiastic about overall dark themes. They tend to hurt my old eyes and I never developed a habit of surfing the web under my bed covers. But I do like a dark panel.

Continuing the Kaffeine jitters
by dep 25 May '24

25 May '24

It is amazing how on the great, vast internet the amount of material has grown while the amount of useful material has shrunk both as a percentage and as an absolute amount. This unhappy fact is exacerbated by rise of conversation bureaucrats, not just the usual web cops but an actual bureaucracy of petit tyrants who, by God, are going to rule with an iron fist. (I actually think one of the great selling points of TDE is this list, which is free of such things. Anyone who remembers the KDE forums way back when would probably still shudder.) This makes tasks like searching for answers all the worse because half the time the search results for your exact question end up being moderators and their rumpswabs angry that the question was asked, rather than just answering the damn thing. I discovered the first day with PiOS that Wayland ain't soup yet. It is theoretically more elegant. So is the ramjet, but if you stick 'em on airplanes now they's gwan to be a whole lot of crashes. I'm beginning to think the same thing is true of Pipewire. Many applications do not play nicely with it. The translation layer seems a little flaky. It has been years since work was done on Kaffeine, and there wasn't any Pipewire then. VLC seems to grumble about it. And unlike X11, which was easy to start instead of Wayland, getting rid of Pipewire is a real pain. But it is looking more and more like the culprit. I'm going in -- look after my family if I don't return. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/
