Kicker appler
by L0ner sh4dou 27 Jan '12

27 Jan '12

Does anyone know if there is an applet for kicker that runs periodically a script and displays it's output. I have a script that once run displays me current CPU temp. Usually I run periodically in a terminal using watch command, but I'd like to incorporate it's result into kicker panel, since running a konsole for just one command that displays something like "64C" is a little overkill to me, and uses too much of my workspace.

Problems with kwin
by Jeff Taylor 27 Jan '12

27 Jan '12

I've been running trinity since the ubuntu team tried to shove kde4 onto us. Through the various versions, and including most recently with a clean install off the trinity maverick cd, I have had the problem that when I log out of my desktop, kde does not save what programs I had open at the time (which should be restored when I log back in). The only solution I have found to this issue is to link to kwin in ~/.kde3/Autostart/ (now with 3.5.13 its in ~/.trinity/Autostart/). Also of note is that kwin is NOT found in 'ps' unless I do this. Now it is my understanding that if kwin is not running, I should be seeing a lack of desktop affects - noticeable things like window borders and such - however when my desktop starts up there are no apparent visual problems. Yet unless I start kwin in Autostart, when I log out of my desktop and back in again, I am always returned to a desktop with konsole and firefox opening up, but nothing else. Once kwin is added to Autostart, my desktop always opens up to whatever programs I had running when I logged out (including correct window and multi-desktop placement). My wife's system: maverick trinity with the standard updates applied. My system: maverick trinity installed, do-release-upgrade to natty, then pulled the apt sources to upgrade to trinity 3.5.13. Through none of these steps did kwin save my desktop on logout. What I would like to know is if there was an issue at some point along this path that kwin did not get added to the normal kde startup process, and if there is a more appropriate way that I should get it to run when a user logs in?

Update Errors
by Raevyn Vieria-Madison 27 Jan '12

27 Jan '12

Hello So I installed Kubuntu 11.10 (Oneirc or whatever) and then installed Trinity. It seemed to go fine, until I logged in. I originally had one Adept update showing for something to do with Ogg (sorry.. I generally just update without to much evaluating) but it failed. I then tried updating again and this time, the enclosed screenshot is what I got. Several broken updates. And now it appears to have locked the /var/ directory O.o Does anyone have any ideas?

kdm-trinity bug question
by James D. Freels 25 Jan '12

25 Jan '12

From a regular user ... I have also noticed the runaway cpu issue with kdm-trinity. I also understand that the issue is to be resolved with the release of R14 of the trinity desktop (3.5.14 ?). In the mean time, I have been using gdm for my login desktop, but I would prefer to use kdm-trinity. Is there anyway to obtain a package now with the bug corrected for 3.5.13 ? I can wait, but I am impatient at times ... I can build packages using apt-get -b source ... -- James D. Freels, Ph.D. Oak Ridge National Laboratory freelsjd(a)ornl.gov 865-576-8645

Trinity on Xephyr
by Raevyn Vieria-Madison 25 Jan '12

25 Jan '12

Hey all! I am wondering if anyone has tried using Xephyr with Trinity? I discovered it when I just installed Debian to make a desktop of GNOME an I found a site that talks about getting KDE 4 to work with it, but I am meeting no success. The program is installed and seems to work, but I cant get kdm or gdm or anything to come up is all. The site was: http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started/Run/Nested_Session

Couple of problems with V3.5.13
by leee 22 Jan '12

22 Jan '12

Hi, I've just upgraded a couple of my Debian Squeeze systems to Trinity V3.5.13 and I've hit a couple of problems straight away, one very serious and the other less so. I haven't checked the full Trinity/KDE suite yet for any other problems but the two I've had so far mean I'm going to have to regress - which will take a lot of time and will not be fun. The lesser of the two problems is that ksysguard can no longer see the lm-sensors readings. Xsensors still worked, confirming that lm-sensors was still ok, so I tried regressing ksysguardd & ksysguard back to V3.5.12, which was only partly successfull; whilst ksysguard V3.5.12 would now pick up the lm-sensors data when run as a desktop app, the panel applet failed completely, telling me I should check my installation. The more serious problem concerns the changes to kdm and the kdm greeter. One of the systems I upgraded is used primarily as a render node and has no keyboard, mouse or monitor attached to it - I maintain and configure it entirely via vnc. I noticed that, after logging into it via ssh and running 'top', kdm_greet was 'thrashing', using ~99% cpu. When I actually started a Trinity session kdm_greet cpu dropped to ~85% but artsd was now using ~10% cpu and kicker was using ~2% cpu. After artsd 'timed-out' its cpu usage dropped and kdm_greet picked up the slack, rising back up to ~97% cpu. Kicker cpu remained at ~2%. I found the earlier thread in the mailing list archives concerning disabling the Ctrl/Alt/Delete 'feature' and while this does indeed stop the Ctrl/Alt/Del feature on the other system I upgraded, which does have a kb, mouse & screen, it did nothing to stop kdm-greet from thrashing the cpu on the 'headless' system. This is a _big_ show stopper, for me at least, hence the _need_ to regress. I'm also a bit perturbed as to why this change to kdm was made in the first place. I moved to KDE3 because Gnome had been dumbed down too much and because the Gnome devs seemed intent on on forcing people to work in the way that _they_ thought people should work. I subsequently moved to Trinity because of similar issues with KDE4 but now Trinity seems to be showing signs of following along the same path. Whilst this new Ctrl/Alt/Del 'feature' may have seemed like a 'Good Idea' at the time it was not one of the original features of KDE3 and significantly changes its behaviour. However, it was precisely because I wanted retain the original KDE behaviour that I switched to Trinity in the first place. Another change I noticed after the upgrade that showed similar signs of this trend was that the Reveal Desktop applet had been added to my Quick Launcher tray. Now personally, I don't have _any_ desktop icons, precisely because I don't want to have to waste time revealing the desktop to get at a hidden icon and then have to re-show all the windows I had open, which is why I use the quick launcher in the first place (and in any case I wouldn't/don't have desktop icons for specific data items either because there isn't enough desktop real estate, even at 1920x1200 for all the different data items I use). Sure, this one was easily fixed, first by making it removable (it was pegged as unremovable) and then removing it, but why was it force-added when, if I had wanted it, it would have already been there in the first place? I'm now a bit confused about the purpose of Trinity. I was under the impression that the project was started to so that people who knew what they were doing and knew how they wanted to work could continue to do so without having changes to their systems and workflows forced upon them. In this context, it seemed that Trinity was never intended to challenge the other mainstream desktop environments, which have been dumbed down by their developers to force their [the developer's] ideas of best practice upon a perceived lowest common denominator user. If this is/was the case then that old maxim applies - it if isn't broke, don't try to fix it. Now whilst I have to admit that my first post to this list has been rather critical I'd like to emphasise that I'm not trying to flame anyone here; far from it in fact. So far, Trinity has been a godsend to me, enabling me to carry on working how _I_ want to work, for which I am very greatfull indeed. However, I do need to decide though, whether I'm going to be able to continue using it for the foreseeable future. Regards, LeeE

Advice on an easy way to mirror/download the Trinity debian repository it's entirety...
by Erik Henk van Asperen 21 Jan '12

21 Jan '12

Hello, I'd like to mirror/download the Debian repository of Trinity to my local machine. This because I want to create my own Debian AMD64/i386 CD/DVD just as there are (already) Kubuntu based ones (in http://depot-trinity.dotriver.eu/cdimages/kubuntu/maverick/) Is there an easy way to do this (FTP server)? I tried to search for a FAQ (RTFM?) on this topic on this website (and on the web) but sofar the answers are less then satisfying. Many thanks in advance for any advice on this! Erik van Asperen.

A wish for KMail...
by Patrick Serru 20 Jan '12

20 Jan '12

Hi everybody, I use the filter for all my POP accounts: Window "Configure KMail" -> Accounts -> Receiving messages -> Window "Edit Account" -> (POP account) check box "Filter messages if they are larger than 100 bytes". It opens a dialogue (see attached snapshot) with three radio buttons that allow, for each message, to: - Download the message (which will then appear "normaly" in KMail) - Leave the message on the server, - Delete the message from the server without downloading it. The radio button "leave on server" is checked by default, it makes sense. I do not know if many of us use this filter... With a limit set to 100 bytes for all POP accounts, I can say that all messages are filtered. My idea is not the honor to spammers by a download. I have "bins / trash" email accounts where spammers have fun, and email accounts more serious. The problem is that there are sometimes hundreds of messages, and depending on the account, almost all to be downloaded or nearly all, to be thrown. I am interested in the title line of the table of the filter dialogue, the one that allows possibly, by a click, sorting of the emails by subjects, by senders, recipients, etc. It begins (left hand) by a green icon representing the columns of buttons for mails "to be downloaded". Then at the left of this icon, a yellow one for "mail to stay on the server". Finally, a red cross for "mails to be deleted from the server". My hope is that if I click on the green icon (first left), all the radio buttons" to be Downloaded" ** to be enabled (activated). Same with the red cross. ** One could imagine that these cliques would only work for messages that still have their button "keep on server" active, but we must have the possibility to put them back in the "leave on server" state, in case of click error... That's it. I hope that I have been clear! I know that the project is far from being ready for the application of this kind of wishes, but in six months, maybe? Cheers, Patrick

The Trinity logo
by E. Liddell 20 Jan '12

20 Jan '12

(Note: if you're also reading the dev mailing list, you already know about all of this.) There has been some interest in creating a new logo for Trinity as part of the ongoing rebranding effort. The current logo is too similar to KDE's (which is trademarked), and we want to avoid any confusion between us and them. Anyone interested is invited to 1. submit a design for the logo or 2. vote on the designs we already have. L0ner sh4dou has offered two designs, which you can view at http://db.tt/LwqZWTuP and http://db.tt/YpivoAGk . For those who would like a little context, his original dev-list email can be found at http://trinity-devel.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::4374 I submitted nine designs, which you can view at http://postimage.org/image/5g0xh97rr/ . I freely admit that several of them are no good. Again, for context, you can find my original dev-list email at http://trinity-devel.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::4501 There has also been some talk about adding additional desktop backgrounds, icon themes, and/or QT widget themes to kdeartwork, so if anyone has anything interesting along those lines, please drop a link to the list.

Let's end this kind of review
by Darrell Anderson 19 Jan '12

19 Jan '12

Article: http://www.datamation.com/open-source/the-fragmentation-of-the-linux-deskto… End of the first page: "...Because maintaining and updating the code is a huge effort, and the development team is small, TDE does suffer from more bugs than you may be used to...." Our release date goal is May 2012, but let's not release R14.0.0 unless all significant blocker, critical, and major bugs are resolved. :) I would like to ask that we consider point releases when serious bugs need to be backported to a current release. For example, when we need to release R14.0.1 then we build and release new packages. I don't think any of us have been doing that. Just thinking out loud.... Darrell

VMWARE player complains about libcanberra-gtk-module
by daniele.manghi＠libero.it 19 Jan '12

19 Jan '12

Good morning. I've installed vmplayer on my Maverick+Trinity. Installationrun ok, but vmplayer refuses to start the guest operating system telling it is missing libcanberra-gtk-module.so. However, if try to installlibcanberra-gtk-module using apt-get, this one tells that the package is alreadyinstalled and at the most recent level. Besides, a 'locate' run finds /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libcanberra-gtk-module.soso, what's really the problem ? Do you know if there is a way to bypass it ? ThanksDaniele Manghi

cmake build options - amarok
by Mike Howard 18 Jan '12

18 Jan '12

Hi All, I have a question of a similar nature to Darrell's earlier in the list (entitled Building tdesdk with cmake) but in this case about Amarok, though the answer may well apply to other packages. When building the good old fashioned way, I would have used '--enable-postgres' (amongst other options) but there appears no cmake equivalent. I had hoped that the configure/build process would detect that the depends are available and build in support automatically but that is not the case, at least for me. So, how, using cmake, do I specify that I want postgres support? Cheers, Mike. -- Any question is easy if you know the answer!

Building tdesdk with cmake
by Darrell Anderson 17 Jan '12

17 Jan '12

GIT 2678 tdesdk was built with automake, but now in GIT is built with cmake. In my previous automake build script I had these two build options: --with-apr-config=/usr/bin/apr-1-config --with-apu-config=/usr/bin/apu-1-config Are these build options necessary in the cmake version or are they automatically detected? I don't see anything obvious in the cmake files. Darrell

KDE 3.5.13 up ! and Kaffeine OSD
by pierre.lag6633＠free.fr 17 Jan '12

17 Jan '12

Hi, Just succeeded in downloading and installing Kaffeine 3.5.13 (and some other parts) on a brand new Linux Mint 12 (Lisa) OS install. So thank you so much for the work, it's great. Only worry so far is the colours of the OSD. I saw there were some posts around here http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.desktop.trinity.devel/1975 about that issue, but no changes in xine configuration has any effect on the problem. So I made some more investigations. I have a 3.5.12 version rolling on the same machine on a Debian Squeeze third boot disk, so I simply and roughly compare and replace some pieces to see what was the origin of this presumably bug. Finally, replacing only the libxinepart.so in /opt/trinity/lib/trinity of Lisa by the 3.5.12 version I have in /opt/trinity/lib/kde3 of Squeeze (name of directory seems to have change between these two versions) changes back the OSD to its initial colours. If it can help further more : Squeeze version date : sam. 14 août 2010 09:29:58 Lisa version date : sam. 15 oct. 2011 02:35:36 So I presume this library has something related to that issue. I'm not a developer, but if I can help comparing source or finding more information, just let me know. I can easily compare versions as they are both rolling on the same machine ;). Cheers and thanks so much again for your fantastic work at TDE. Pierre

K Menu - kicker crash
by Mike Howard 16 Jan '12

16 Jan '12

I've just completed a TDE build from scratch on a fresh Debian Wheezy system, from the stable source. There were a number of issues to do with the source, which I'll document separately, in case it's useful to others. One problem that I have so far found with the resulting installation is 'kicker' crashing when attempting to select the 'System' sub menu option. In more detail, using the mouse to select 'K Menu' and then moving the mouse pointer to the 'System' entry in the upper, 'All Applications' portion of the menu, _always_ results in a crash, bringing up the 'KDE Panel - The KDE Crash Handler' dialog box. Any body any ideas? Is there a way to determine what, if any, options should be available on the sub menu on this system? Obviously there will be different options available on different systems. Maybe it's crashing cos it's empty. Cheers, Mike. --

Mirrors
by Dan Youngquist 14 Jan '12

14 Jan '12

I really don't want to sound impatient or ungrateful -- I realize Trinity is an all-volunteer project to which I don't contribute (although I would if I had the skills). I really appreciate all the time and effort that goes into Trinity. But I have situations that are becoming critical, and I need to know how to plan. I have users I've been putting off for almost 3 weeks now, as well as a couple machines of my own with problems I can't fix, because the mirrors are down. Every day I tell them it's still not working, but it should be "any time now." Surely someone (Tim?) has some idea how much longer it's likely to be? All it takes is the upload bandwidth, the amount of data still to transfer, and some basic math to get a good estimate. Is it going to be another hour, a day, a week, 3 more weeks? If I can't at least find out very soon, I'm going to have to give up on Trinity and commit to another direction. -- PGP key: http://homestead-products.com/pubkey.htm

Centered or "Smart" Default Window Placement
by Darrell Anderson 14 Jan '12

14 Jan '12

I'm posting this question to both the developer's and user's list. Everybody's thoughts and comments are welcomed. Bug report 676 (http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=676) was submitted requesting that the default window placement be changed from "Smart" to Centered. A patch was provided to make that change. What do you think? The configuration option for window placement is found in Control Center, Desktop, Window Behavior, Moving tab. Please keep the conversation focused to the DEFAULT setting and not what you prefer. The default setting is used when a person uses Trinity for the first time and is still learning to use the desktop. For a default setting, keep in mind new users, users migrating from Windows, traditional window placement, user expectations, newbies, etc. This discussion is not about the merits of either option but which is best as a default for new users. Please --- if you don't know what the "Smart" option does, then don't speculate. :) Thanks much for your time! Darrell

bandwidth solution, aka mirrors are down
by Greg Madden 14 Jan '12

14 Jan '12

I am a member of a local LUG (Linux User Group) here in Anchorage. We meet on Friday niights for a hands on lab session self support etc. One comment about bandwidth around the LUG: 'never under stimater the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes' This is a paraphrase of an old saying , hence the tape refernce? The poin being, transfering large data sets can be accomplished by loading up the old auto and driving them, locally, seems like you could also mail a hard drive, USB stick somwhere in a timely fashion. -- Peace, Greg

Authentication/Configuration
by Mike Howard 13 Jan '12

13 Jan '12

Ok Guys, go easy, silly question time. When building and installing TDE from scratch on a clean, 'X'-less system, how do I get authentication working? I assume that TDE just passes on the task to the underlying OS. However, having done a clean build I don't know how to get the necessary configuration and auth bits in place, like Pam modules, init scripts etc. When you install from packages it's all taken care of. I can (and will) hack about to create the above but just wondered if there was something ready rolled. Cheers, Mike. -- Every question is easy if you know the answer!

tdelibs fails to build - Git source
by Mike Howard 12 Jan '12

12 Jan '12

Hi All, Having started from scratch again in my quest to build TDE on wheezy, tdelibs is now failing to compile. I've built and installed, from Git, as per the wiki (except that avahi-tqt will not build) and tdelibs fails with; .......... [ 1%] Building CXX object dcop/CMakeFiles/DCOP-shared.dir/dcopclient.cpp.o cd /tmp/tdelibs/dcop && /usr/bin/c++ -DDCOP_shared_EXPORTS -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DQT_NO_ASCII_CAST -DQT_CLEAN_NAMESPACE -DQT_NO_STL -DQT_NO_COMPAT -DQT_NO_TRANSLATION -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -D_REENTRANT -include tqt.h -fPIC -I/tmp/tdelibs/dcop -I/tmp/tdelibs -I/root/trinity/root.tde.tmp/tde.new/tde/main/tdelibs/dcop -I/tmp/tdelibs/tdecore -I/root/trinity/root.tde.tmp/tde.new/tde/main/tdelibs/tdecore -o CMakeFiles/DCOP-shared.dir/dcopclient.cpp.o -c /root/trinity/root.tde.tmp/tde.new/tde/main/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.cpp In file included from /root/trinity/root.tde.tmp/tde.new/tde/main/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.cpp:2285: /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:121: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of âQCStringâ with no type /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:121: error: expected â,â or â...â before â&â token /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:121: error: prototype for âvoid DCOPClient::applicationRegistered(int)â does not match any in class âDCOPClientâ /root/trinity/root.tde.tmp/tde.new/tde/main/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.h:745: error: candidate is: void DCOPClient::applicationRegistered(const TQCString&) /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:134: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of âQCStringâ with no type /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:134: error: expected â,â or â...â before â&â token /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:134: error: prototype for âvoid DCOPClient::applicationRemoved(int)â does not match any in class âDCOPClientâ /root/trinity/root.tde.tmp/tde.new/tde/main/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.h:754: error: candidate is: void DCOPClient::applicationRemoved(const TQCString&) /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:166: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of âQCStringâ with no type /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:166: error: expected â,â or â...â before â&â token /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:166: error: prototype for âvoid DCOPClient::callBack(int, int)â does not match any in class âDCOPClientâ /root/trinity/root.tde.tmp/tde.new/tde/main/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.h:794: error: candidate is: void DCOPClient::callBack(int, const TQCString&, const TQByteArray&) /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc: In member function âvirtual bool DCOPClient::qt_emit(int, TQUObject*)â: /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:196: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of âtype nameâ with no type /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:196: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of âtype nameâ with no type /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:196: error: expected primary-expression before âconstâ /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:196: error: expected â)â before âconstâ /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:197: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of âtype nameâ with no type /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:197: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of âtype nameâ with no type /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:197: error: expected primary-expression before âconstâ /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:197: error: expected â)â before âconstâ /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:200: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of âtype nameâ with no type /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:200: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of âtype nameâ with no type /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:200: error: expected primary-expression before âconstâ /tmp/tdelibs/dcop/dcopclient.moc:200: error: expected â)â before âconstâ make[2]: *** [dcop/CMakeFiles/DCOP-shared.dir/dcopclient.cpp.o] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/tmp/tdelibs' make[1]: *** [dcop/CMakeFiles/DCOP-shared.dir/all] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/tdelibs' make: *** [all] Error 2 ......... I've then mirrored exactly what I've done on wheezy in a squeeze chroot and the results are the same, including the failure of avahi-tqt to build. As a matter of interest, apart from the 'util' linking issue on wheezy, tdelibs built ok last week. Any ideas? Regards, Mike. --

Wiki Updates
by Darrell Anderson 12 Jan '12

12 Jan '12

I made extensive changes to the developer's page at the wiki. I ask that everybody review. I won't pretend I got everything perfectly correct. Others with more experience need to perform a subject matter expert technical review. I have a one sentence spot where eventually a link will be added as a gateway to package specific information about building. My hope for those pages will include unique build requirements, using extra include directories, what external packages are required to provide additional functionality, etc. For that last point, this is not a detailed dependency list. Package managers and upstream maintainers handle those details. I am addressing additional functionality. For example, ocaml is not required to build kalzium in kdeedu, but adds additional functionality when present during building. Please review the wiki. If uncomfortable directly editing the wiki, please forward corrections to me. Thanks! Darrell

Can't build kdemultimedia
by Darrell Anderson 12 Jan '12

12 Jan '12

I'm revamping my build scripts in preparation for building from GIT. I no longer can build kdemultimedia 3.5.13. My build script for that package is almost unchanged although my master script that runs everything has changed a bit. The following messages appears in the build log: ============================================================= checking audiofile.h usability... yes checking audiofile.h presence... no configure: WARNING: audiofile.h: accepted by the compiler, rejected by the preprocessor! configure: WARNING: audiofile.h: proceeding with the compiler's result checking for audiofile.h... yes ============================================================= I presume the messages mean that audiofile.h is available (true: /usr/include), but that has somehow failed some other test. I don't know what "presence" means. I have audiofile 0.2.6 installed. I don't know what usability I lose with those audiofile.h messages, but the build always fails hard now with the following: ============================================================= make[4]: GCC Visibility
by Darrell Anderson 10 Jan '12

10 Jan '12

I understand the distinction between public and private variables and functions. I don't have a grasp about why this gcc visibility thing makes a difference. Why is enabling this good for me as a builder/packager? As an end-user? I get the feeling with hiding the private non shared stuff that executables and libraries are smaller in size, which theoretically reduces load times, which theoretically should improve response on the desktop. But how much? A layman's explanation is much appreciated. :) Darrell

Can I stop entry boxes from automatically clearing?
by Calvin Morrison 10 Jan '12

10 Jan '12

Hi All, I was wondering if I can stop entry boxes ( like the URL bar in konqueror to not automatically clear when I hit CTRL+L ). This also happens in File Dialogs. The default for browsers and GTK+ as well as Mac, is to Highlight the bars contents, not delete it. Surely there is an option somewhere? Calvin

Missing dnotify option?
by Darrell Anderson 09 Jan '12

09 Jan '12

With automake, in kdelibs, there is a configure option --enable-dnotify. Does an equivalent exist in the cmake options? If not, could this be part of the problem with several bug reports about konqueror not updating file changes? Darrell

PyKDE3 build fails - Missing kdeversion.h
by Mike Howard 09 Jan '12

09 Jan '12

Hi All, As per the wiki (http://trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Developers/HowToBuild), it seems that python-kde3 source has been removed from Trinity. I've therefore built SIP and PyQt from upstream but PyKDE (3.16.7) fails, complaining it can't find kdeversion.h, which doesn't exist on my system (building from git). Am I doing something stupid? Apologies if this is a stupid question. Cheers, Mike.

Trinity on Ubuntu and mirror problems
by Samuele Kaplun 09 Jan '12

09 Jan '12

Hello! I would like to try out the Trinity project, since I really would like to deploy KDevelop3 on Ubuntu (11.10), (this was the last version of KDevelop really able to handle Python) I tried today to follow the installation guide but I am stuck with the mirror issue some other users already reported. Are there any news on the status of the mirror(s)? (And actually, is the original server not public available)? Best regards and keep up the great work! Wiki Changes for Building Trinity
by Darrell Anderson 06 Jan '12

06 Jan '12

Within the past couple of days I proposed some updates to the wiki for building Trinity. I received no objections. In addition to those changes, I propose removing the information about building from SVN and replace that section with a blurb and link to the GIT wiki page (http://www.trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Developers/GIT). Not to mention that much of the wiki page needs updating to reflect the efforts of the renaming project. The GIT repository is now open to the public and the wiki needs updating pronto. :) Any objections? Darrell

Donations
by Darrell Anderson 06 Jan '12

06 Jan '12

Currently the only information I find at the Trinity web site about donating funds to the Trinity Project is to use Paypal. I want to donate but can't because I don't have a Paypal account and I have no intentions of creating an account. Buying a Visa gift card is easy enough but using that card to support Trinity is not --- I find no information about using Paypal anonymously. I probably could find somebody who has a Paypal account to act as intermediary to make the donation for me, but that is cumbersome. Are there other options to financially support Trinity? Darrell

Building Trinity Failing - opensuse 11.1
by Patrick Serru 06 Jan '12

06 Jan '12

Hi everybody, I downloaded the 3.3Go Git files. When I tryed to build it following http://trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Developers/HowToBuild I uses OpenSuse 11.1. I had the following prolem: configure: error: Your Installation isn't able to compile simple C++ programs. Check config.log for details - if you're using a Linux distribution you might miss a package named similar to libstdc++-dev. I checked with Yast: the package libstdc++-dev is well present. Could it be a version bloblem, as a search on "libstdc++" with yast shows version 33, 41 and 43 with libstdc++43, libstdc++43-32bits and libstdc++43-devel installed, with libstdc++-dev... You could answer that I have to wait for the availability of the distribution specific package (OSS 12.1)... Good luck to everyone, Patrick

avoid "Ctrl-Ald-Del" in screen unlock dialog
by Ilya Dogolazky 05 Jan '12

05 Jan '12

Hi ! Every time I'm unlocking the TDE screen it's asking me "Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to begin". First of all it's very annoying, but beside of that, I can't send "ctrl-alt-del" via the VNC connection, so I can't use my computer remotely (a similar problem with Windows OSes can be resolved by manipulating of registry database). How can I get the password entering dialog directly, without C-A-Del ? Cheers, Ilya

I was going to install the previous ISO that was made based off of 10.10 except.. it loads up the option screen, then goes blank after some time and sits there. Its weird.. like the cursor is there as though it is at a command line, but nothing is popping up. This is only happening on my actual computer also.. as a virtual machine it isnt. Any ideas how to fix that behaviour? Rae

Building Trinity Failing - GIT source
by Mike Howard 04 Jan '12

04 Jan '12

New to the list so hi All, Happy New Year. I'm attempting to build TDE on a fresh Debian Wheezy install. I'm following the wiki at; http://trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Developers/HowToBuild, but I'm having problems building tdelibs. I'm sure I managed beyond this point a week or so ago (fresh install since) so may be doing something stupid. I got and built qt3-3.3.8.d.tar.gz (into /opt/qt) and the TDE source with; git clone http://git.trinitydesktop.org/cgit/tde and following the wiki built tqtinterface and arts. Unfortunately, tdelibs fails. I'm building out of source with; cmake /path/tdelibs -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/opt/trinity -DCMAKE_VERBOSE_MAKEFILE=ON -DWITH_QT3=ON -DQTDIR=/opt/qt -DQT_LIBRARY_DIRS=/opt/qt/lib -DBUILD_ALL=ON Any problem with PPA's ?
by pierre.lag6633＠free.fr 03 Jan '12

Hi, First, I use Trinity since the begining and I'm under 3.5.12 on a Debian Squeeze machine and it works like a charm since then. It's been a fantastic work and I'm so glad I can still use Kaffeine and some KDE "real" stuffs. Though, since a time I have some concerns with the ppa repositories. I've just tried the 3.5.13 versions of them but still there are some issues. I followed the "how to" for Oneiric under Linux Mint LISA and Debian Squeeze (under Debian Squeeze, of course). Did I miss something ? Errors description (sorry some sentences are in french) for both systems are following. Of course if any other information is needed, feel free to ask for it. how to get rid of old KDE packages?
by Frank Lienhard 03 Jan '12

03 Jan '12

I've updatet from lenny/KDE3 to squeeze/trinity, but still have not managed to get rid of some kde-packages. e.g I found 'kdebase-runtime' still installed, which is needed by 'cervisia', which is recommented by 'quanta-trinity' (even so there is a cervisia-trinity). als there is a kdelibs5-plugin installed. Is there a shortcut to get rid of all the unnecesary kde packages?

screen saver/lock not working on the second monitor

How can I make screen saver use both monitors? Cheers, Ilya

Strange behaviour using removable media - Squeeze & Konqueror
by Ken Heard 01 Jan '12

01 Jan '12

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 1. I recently upgraded one of my three computers from Debian Lenny to Squeeze with KDE-Trinity 3.5.13. (The other two computers still have Lenny with KDE 3.5.10.) 2. The default view profile when Trinity Konqueror is loaded is “File Management”. That profile is configured to load Konqueror with two tabs, the first one being “system:/media” and the second one “/home/$USER/docs”, but with the contents of the second tab displayed on the monitor. 3. When a user logs on for the first time, opens Konqueror and clicks on the “system:/media” tab no content is shown. If however the user closes Konqueror, opens it a second time and clicks on the “system:/media” tab a second time, now the tab lists all the “Remote Shares”. Why is this list shown on second and subsequent times of opening Konqueror, but not the first time? 4. This box has three removable media drives installed: a DVD drive, an Iomega Zip 750 drive and a 9 cm floppy drive. Installing a CD or DVD drive causes the “Removable Media KDE daemon” to open in a separate window but also adds another line to the “system:/media” tab which identifies the installed medium by name, e.g., “Trips001”. It is then possible to mount this medium from the “system:/media” tab, read its contents and ultimately either to unmount or eject it. The last two operations cause the identifying line to disappear. 5. Two Zip 750 disks are normally used for backups in this box; but Konqueror does not behave the same way for each one. Installation in the drive of one of the disks will cause a new line to be added to the “system:/media” tab, “ZIP750” which corresponds to the mount point for this drive (UUID=348F-3C8C) established in “/etc/fstab”. It is then possible to mount this medium, read from it, write to it and ultimately unmount it. On unmounting the “ZIP750” line disappears. 6. Installation of the other Zip 750 disk in the same drive opens a *different* new line in the “system:/media” tab. Instead of reading “ZIP750” it reads “752M removable media”. Konqueror will not permit mounting or unmounting this particular Zip 750 disk; it says that the user does not have permission to open this disk and that this device node does not appear in “/etc/fstab”. This disk can however be mounted (and unmounted) in an Xterm. Once mounted in that way it will show up in the “system:/media” tab as mounted and can be read from and written to in that tab. So, why do two Zip 750 disks installed in the same drive behave differently in Konqueror? 7. At this point it occurred to me that the first Zip 750 disk was, so to speak, a virgin disk; whereas the second was not. The second in fact had tarballs of files in the Squeeze box but written to it from a Lenny box. So, I decided to restore the “virginity” of the second by running in the Squeeze box “mkfs.vfat /dev/sda4”, which of course obliterated those files. I then tried in the Squeeze box to mount it both in an Xterm and in the “system:/media” tab of Konqueror; it would not mount at all in either place. I then went back to the Lenny box, logged in as the user whose files are in the Squeeze box and was able to write to this disk backup tarballs of files in the Squeeze box. I took this disk back to the Squeeze box and was now able to open it there in the “system:/media” tab as “750M removable media” and to perform all the usual removable disk functions. I also however discovered that now I cannot mount either Zip 750 disk from an Xterm. When I try I now receive the message “I could not determine the file system type and none was specified.” Strange. 8. For both these two drives, the DVD and the Iomega Zip 750, the “Removable Media KDE daemon” opens. Since I prefer to open these in a Konqueror tab instead of in a new window, I would like to be able to prevent that daemon from opening in a new window. Is there a way to do so? 9. Finally, the floppy drive is not recognized at all in the Squeeze box. With a disk installed it does not show up in the “system:/media”, nor can it be mounted in an Xterm. What, if anything, be done to use floppies with Squeeze and KDE-Trinity Konqueror? Problem with KMail 1.9.9
by Lisi 28 Dec '11

28 Dec '11

Hi! I am switching my husband from Thunderbird to KMail, as I would rather have him on KMail. But I have promised him that I will make it look as similar as possible to what he is used to, so that nothing that he does needs to be different. I know his way of working, and this is achievable. Except.... Except for my current problem. Yesterday I started to set KMail up, and made a few entries before I had to go. Today I switched off the favourite folders pane, went to carry on setting up where I left off - and noticed that there was no inbox. Obviously I can create a folder called Inbox, but it puts itself at the bottom of the default folders list with a standard folder icon, instead of at the top of them with the inbox icon. Furthermore, the few settings I entered yesterday have disappeared. :-( PEBKAC is a definite possibility, given that I haven't been well and am on a large dose of a strong antibiotic, but even if it is my fault, I still need to put it right. I have tried to purge and then install, but that seemed to intend to remove most of the desktop. So I ran aptitude reinstall. Nothing changed. I ran aptitude autoclean, aptitude reinstall, no joy. I then went on to Google. There was lots on disappearing emails, but nothing on disappearing folders. And that was after I had managed to get rid of most of the KDE4 stuff. So, help!! Thanks, Lisi

kdm authentication failures
by Alan 27 Dec '11

27 Dec '11

Hello, I can't get kdm to authenticate my user. I built kdebase from revision 1236975, and I configured it as follows: mkdir build; cd build cmake .. \ -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr \ -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release \ -DBUILD_ALL=On \ -DBUILD_DOC=Off \ -DWITH_SHADOW=On Yet I am unable to authenticate my user. This system doesn't have pam. This used to work with kde 3.5.10 when I ran configure with --with-shadow. Suggestions?

Problems in vlc 1.1.3 on Squeeze+Trinity 3.5.13 on VB 4.1.6r74727 on Lenny
by Lisi 20 Dec '11

20 Dec '11

Hello all! I'm afraid that I have no idea where the problem lies. It is probably relevant that I am a complete ignoramus where multimedia is concerned. I need to run vlc simultaneously with wireshark in order to analyse the traces for an assignment in an online course I am doing. I can run Wireshark on Trinity on Squeeze, but not on Lenny. (I believe there is a bug.) I can run vlc in Lenny, but not in Trinity/Squeeze. And yes, they are different versions. See below for extract from Squeeze syslog. All suggestions welcomed!! Even RTFM, so long as the admonition includes which %^&*!!$ Manual to read! If there is no way it could be Trinity, I'll take my request elsewhere, but I didn't like to cross-post. And I find life more comfortable if I don't force insecure KDE4 users to make snide remarks about KDE3 lovers! Thanks, all. Also, is there a wiki page to explain translation process?

After the upgrade finished, I tried to open Konqueror; the result was a hung machine. - From as virtual terminal (ctrl-alt-F1) I rebooted the machine. On reboot the GUI did not appear; the machine opened with the shell bang. I the logged in as root and ran the command "startx". TDE 3.5.13 Debian Squeeze I was trying to run 'kcron' as root, from a root prompt in konsole. 'kcron' is not found, I have to use full path '/opt/trinity/bin/kcron'. This brings up kcron but trying to add a cron job causes a crash, the crash handler pops up. I get this info from the terminal: "In file /build/buildd/kdeadmin-trinity-3.5.13/./kcron/ktview.cpp, line 372: Out of memory KCrash: crashing... crashRecursionCounter = 2 KCrash: Application Name = kcron path = <unknown> pid = 4347 kdeinit: Got EXEC_NEW 'drkonqi' from socket. Could not load library! Trying exec.... kdeinit: PID 4413 terminated." I noticed that using the 'export' command, there is no reference to KDEDIR(S) or PATH to the Trinity stuff. I installed the metapackage 'kdebase-trinity', 'kdepim-trinity' and a few apps, not the full DE. It seems like kcron can't find a library. what sets up the TDE environment for root ? -- Peace Greg

So, if some bugs and corrections are being done by the devs, why not let the users get them now, instead of waiting 6 or more months? The point here, is that with Debian, people are used to get new upgrades, new versions, and more important, bug corrections via apt-get, _all the time_. So, maybe Trinity lacks here is a maintainer for the Debian packages, so that they can been regularly upgraded, at least if not with new features, with bug corretions and general polishing?? Thanks.

Debian Wheezy bug reporting ?
by Greg Madden 14 Dec '11

14 Dec '11

Caveat, I am not advocating theTrinity devs support Wheezy.. before it is time. Fact of life for Debian users, it is hard to not track testing (Wheezy now) . This brings up what to do with bugs found while using TDE-latest on Wheezy. My testing platform is VirtualBox , I run stable as host, so I am not affected by the bugs. I see a few minor bugs, mostly depends on Squeeze versions that no longer exist, and TDE appps do not recognize the version bump. I can post what I find to this list, as others have done, to help us users. Reporting to the bug tracker ? -- Peace, Greg

After a first crash, it restarts. But after a second crash, the panel does not seem to load anymore unless I re log. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Building 3.5.13 with autotools

Does anyone have a script they use to build kdeutils taht I can have a look at ? The how to build docs method cd to whichever module you want to build, then run: cp -Rp <path to your system's libtool.m4 file> admin/libtool.m4.in cp -Rp <path to your system's ltmain.sh file> admin/ltmain.sh make -f admin/Makefile.common Doesn't work for me on arch I am getting undefined references to things like QString and QWidget etc. I beleve that those are defined in qt3 and tqt. I added this CFLAGS="-I/usr/include/tqt -I/usr/qt3/include" CXXFLAGS="-I/usr/include/tqt -I/usr/qt3/include" to configure.in.in and then ran make -f admin/Makefile.common, but it didn't help I also have some linker issues but I'll tackle those after I get the code to build Thanks

Any upgrades to TDE 3.5.13 on the horizont??
by Jorge Gonçalves 05 Dec '11

05 Dec '11

Hi all! I've been using TDE 3.5.13 since mid-October, first with the night builds. With the release in November, I try to use as my main desktop, but now it seems I have to go back to "old" KDE 3.5.10, because of some problems with TDE - not so many, but still important one's. My system is a Debian squeeze, so every day I do a "apt-get update" hopefully looking for some correction for the bugs, but every time no updates. So, I would like to know if 3.5.13 will have some bugs correction, and when?? Or will I have to wait for the next main release in estimated 6 months time? Thanks!

It's intended to keep it GPL and below 700MB As a whole load of gnome libs to sack were found, French and German language support for TDE are now included, in addition to English and Spanish. It is *not* an "official" TDE build and is supported by nobody but me, if even that! It's untested beyond that it boots and installs here, so testers appreciated. Regards, David

Upgrading TDE 3.5.13 Maverick to Natty

Trinity Desktop Environment Feedback
by Sashko - 03 Dec '11

03 Dec '11

Hello Timothy, I just want to say that you are doing a marvelous job with TDE. Words cannot express how happy I am with TDE. Basically, TDE is a dream come true. I don't know whether you get any feedback or not but as a developer I know that feedback is extremely important - it motivates developers do more coding and improve their work! I had been looking for a proper Linux Desktop since the time I first started experimenting with Linux - 1998. Every single DE until TDE came out has/had been a major disappointment. It has been a major disappointment because basic concepts of desktop computing such as Drag&Drop, Search, Copy/Paste, Print Screen etc have not been met and are not working and this happens right now with some well known DEs with their latest releases... TDE however is addressing all of these concepts and goes way beyond. TDE meets and it well exceeds the basic concepts of desktop computing! What I like about TDE? - I can drop any icon/shortcut to the panel - be it a folder, shortcut, image or a URL from any window regardless what toolkit it is using (I have tried both GTK and QT)! I can even drag browser URLs into the panel! The basic concepts of desktop computing!! This is like Windows!! Well done!! - When I drag the object/icon on the panel (rearranging icons), the space between the icons is evenly adjusted automatically between the shortcuts/icons! This is simply awesome!! The basic concepts of desktop computing!! Well done!!! Basic concepts of desktop computing are actually working in TDE! Well done!! - The Search field on the top right of KNQ is awesome! Well done!! It works better than Windows and it is very quick!! - Find Files and Folders dialog - Well done!! Well done!!! - The Search in the T menu - awesome work!! Well done! (I just wish it could be moved to the bottom but no biggie) - Well done!! - Print Screen!! Well done!! It works from any app from any widget regardless which widget has the focus! I have seen poor attempts in the past where some DEs try to make Print Screen work like in Windows but the funny thing is it only works when the desktop itself is focused. Once it looses the focus it does not work. The PRNT SCR stroke is not captured. Yours however is done the right way! It seems to bypass the focused widget ignoring its keystroke events and it travels all the way and it captures the screenshot. Again, basics of desktop computing. *Well Done!!!* - Mounted drive icons on the desktop - the tooltip and the property dialog box show the device they are pointing to - e.g: /dev/sdb2 - Well done! Marvelous job!! With other DEs I have to use long-cuts to find out what/where everything is! Again, well done!!! - Your Quick Launch applet on the panel - again, it works pretty much like the Windows one with full Drag&Drop support from any window and spaces between icons are automatically and evenly adjusted - Well done!!! - Right click context menus from the T menu (Copy To Run Dialog, Edit Menu Entry etc) - Absolutely marvelous!! I just donated to show my support. Please continue the excellent work! Words cannot express the high quality of your work. I can see true professionalism and potential! Well done!! Any way, please keep up the current path and do not make the same mistake other teams have done. The basics of desktop computing in other DEs are not working and they give us these flashy and useless special effects instead! Usability first, special effects second, not the otherway around! Ignore negative comments and trolls - there aren't any negatives in TDE. Any negative comments are made by people that don't understand the basic concepts of desktop computing. However, You do! TDE does, you've done it right, You are on the right path. Keep up! TDE has done it right! (I think based on my feedback, you can tell I have been a Windows user but with TDE, *literally*, that is changing. Again, awesome work, keep up the good work. I am a hobby developer BCB, VC++, AMX, I might even contribute with code (C++ here) in the future). P.S. You need to do something about your site - it looks a little bit plain!! My colleague at work said, "before I start using a product, I first look at their web site and if it doesn't look professional...etc etc". Either way I explained to him that "TDE is an exception" and I encourage him try it. Don't make the site bloated, just make it less plain. P.S. I introduce TDE to people at work, showing them screenshots and pointing them at the download URL. Everyone of us should all do the same and I encourage every single one of us to donate and support this project. Cheers

But some issues remain. here is the list of issues I've seen so far (any help is very welcome!) in none particular order. The most important items below are: 2, 6.2, 6.3, 8, 11 and of course 1 ;) 1. I got a message "KFish applet can't be installed on the panel", and no fish is visible :-( 2. The 'konsole' application (KDE's xterm replacement) can't be started: ilya@kalma:~$ which konsole /opt/trinity/bin/konsole ilya@kalma:~$ konsole konsole: symbol lookup error: /opt/trinity/lib/libkdeui.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN7QObject18childrenListObjectEv 3. I have two panels, one for buttons, keyes, kfish and menus; and the second one for tasks. This second one was configured in KDE to be two items high, but now its height is just one item ("item" in my definition is a rectangle representing a single task). Fixed it manually by setting "Size" from "Default" to "Custom 52 pixels" 4. There are some KDE4 artifacts: 4.1 A PSI program successfully attached to the panel, but the drop down menus look like those in KDE4 and the UI of the psi program itself looks like KDE4. I would like to know if it's the expected behavior. Basicaly I have nothing against it (ok, it's ugly, but I can live with it), but it's better to know for sure. 4.2 An application called "Nepomuk Strigi File Indexing" (which I never seen before) is started, attached to the panel and doing some massive input/output. The UI looks like KDE4. I would like to know how to get rid of it. 5. Background pictures disappeared, only one of six is visible (I'm afraid they were original KDE3 pictures and just gone during the system update) 6. Massive screen saver issues: 6.1 My previously used screen saver (displaying failure messages from different operation systems) disappeared. 6.2 In the unlock dialog there is no keyboard layout button. This is a really critical issue: once locked with Russian layout I can't switch to a Latin one, thus I can't enter the password and unlock 6.3 When screen saver is starting only one physical display (out of two) is cleaned, so everyone can read information on the secondary display (which is in kinda "read-only" mode, so no use input possible). This is a pretty heavy issue as well. 7. Trinity KDM is not working (probably crashing, but I've not investigated much), and "trinity" is not appearing in the default KDM window manager selection list. So I've stopped display manager, created a simple .xinitrc script ("exec /opt/trinity/bin/startkde 2>trinity.stderr >trinity.stdout") and now starting trinity with "startx" command. 8. The output of .xinitrc contains couple of "symbol lookup error:" lines: 8.1 for /opt/trinity/bin/kdeinit: symbol lookup error: /opt/trinity/lib/libDCOP.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN7QObject21objectTreesListObjectEv 8.2 konsole: symbol lookup error: /opt/trinity/lib/libkdeui.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN7QObject18childrenListObjectEv (see issue 2 above). 8.3 See item 11 below. 9. Very annoying issue, but I've seen it in KDE3 already: while moving a window inside of secondary physical monitor, it's not possible to move it to the upper area: window manager only allows to keep it *below* the panel (but the panel is occupying only the primary monitor, thus the piece of the secondary monitor is not used by application windows. There is a work around: maximize window in question, then it's taking the whole secondary monitor. 10. Fuzzy clock in the bottom panel doesn't use the font it was using in KDE. I tried to fix it, something very bad happened, see item 11. By the way: how can I restore the panels without logging off and on again? 11. After right-clicking on the clock in the bottom panel and selecting "configure clock" BOTH panels (top and bottom) disappeared. The last suspicious message in trinity.stderr is: kicker [kdeinit]: symbol lookup error: /opt/trinity/lib/libkdeui.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN7QObject18childrenListObjectEv Cheers, Ilya Dogolazky

Hi ! I've installed trinity today for the first time. Until yesterday I used an old installation of KDE 3.5 (debian, probably lenny; but today it's squeeze with some wheezy elements). I have couple of questions about the KDE -> Trinity transition and the first one is: Is there an way to import as many settings as possible from my old KDE settings directory? Thanks ! -- Ilya Dogolazky

KMail
by Lisi Reisz 02 Dec '11

02 Dec '11

I am still having problems getting KMail to use my data from before my desktop died. I have now successfully copied an intact copy of the Mail folder ~/Mail) from a backup to my present setup. I have checked, and my folders and emails at least are there. But KMail won't use them/doesn't see them. This is the method I have always used before, that has always worked before. I am desperate to be able to use KMail again, but daren't just set it up because I am then going to be faced with losing everything that I do now, if I ever succeed in restoring the stuff from the past. I thought of purging and reinstalling KMail and starting again, but that would remove 383 packages, and I am somewhat chary therefore of doing it. ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail in the new set-up has: file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/drafts file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.drafts.index file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.drafts.index.ids file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/inbox file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.inbox.index file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.inbox.index.ids file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/outbox file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.outbox.index file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.outbox.index.ids file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/sent-mail file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.sent-mail.index file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.sent-mail.index.ids file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/templates file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.templates.index file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.templates.index.ids file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/trash file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.trash.index file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.trash.index.ids There is now no error message about indices, but it looks to me as though this directory is at the root of the problem. I have renamed it and started KMail, and it just regenerates it the same, and still doesn't use the available data, but kmail gives: file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/autosave file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/autosave.index.ids file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/$name%40gmail.com:%40pop.gmail.com:995 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/$name%40googlemail.com:%40pop.gmail.com:995 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/$name:%40pop.gmail.com:995 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/dimap file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/$name%40gmail.com:%40pop.gmail.com:995 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/$name%40googlemail.com:%40pop.gmail.com:995 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/elizabeth.reisz:%40pop.gmail.com:995 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/$name%40googlemail.com:%40pop.gmail.com:995 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/imap file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/kmmainwin.rc file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/lisi%40$name.myzen.co.uk:%40mailhost.zen.co.uk:110 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/lisi.reisz%40gmail.com:%40pop.gmail.com:995 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/lisi.reisz:%40pop.gmail.com:995 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/lisi.t155:%40pop.gmail.com:995 file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/lock file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail.old file:///home/lisi/.kde/share/apps/kmail/search Help!! I really need my KMail stuff! How do I persuade KMail to use it? Lisi

The "Desktop is $HOME, not $HOME/Desktop" issue again
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 02 Dec '11

02 Dec '11

I just installed TDE 3.5.15 on a fresh wheezy box (T61p, kernel 3.*, nvidia drivers). Funny thing, anything worked, after I got rid of all KDE4 libs which caused a blue screen with cursor after login otherwise. The only issue I did not find a reason for is that $HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs gets overwritten with all folders set to $HOME: XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME" So this causes TDE to assume the desktop folder is the useres home directory. I can change that dir to "$HOME/Desktop" and apply the immutable flag to the file to prevent it beeing overwritten at login - the fiole is overwritten at each login somewhere before TDE reads it. Now my question is, what when why is this file written? It's a bit anoying when you stumble upon that problem :-) Nik -- Mag. Kicker crashes when Settings or System menus are accessed
by Dan Youngquist 29 Nov '11

29 Nov '11

3.5.13 on Xubuntu Oneiric. All other menus work, but as soon as I go to Settings or System, kicker crashes. Also crashes when I use the menu search, but I suspect it's because it hits one of those two menus. Anyone else having this problem? -- PGP key: http://homestead-products.com/pubkey.htm

Great work! I loved KDE 2 in it's time, loved KDE 3, and I'm sure I will love Trinity. I just installed it in my Ubuntu (not Kubuntu) and its works flawlessly (until now) and extremely fast! I got a screenshot and maybe someone can put it on the website. In the future I will try to work fixing bugs. For now I need to finish my BS. in Computer Science... []s

the state of sudo
by Calvin Morrison 26 Nov '11

26 Nov '11

Hello, I think another thing on all of our minds should be towards dealing with the problems related to sudo. As we know not all distros support it, and also removing sudo in cases can remove the entire trinity install, wreak havoc and other terrible things. Do we have a plan for this? Tim what needs to be done? Calvin
