I've downloaded umtsmon from sourceforge, and I did not even have to compile it, because the tar.gz contains a binary. Good Morning to Everyone.I've just downloaded and installed a pre-built Maverick (Ubuntu 10.10) with Trinityon an old TOSHIBA Satellite U-200. I would be verry happy to drop KDE4.x, which I don'tlike at all, and keep my old good (very very good) KDE 3.5. I was having troubles with wireless, but they are solved and now wireless is OK.Unfortunately, now I'm not managing to setup a mobile connection through a huaweiusb key. Is there some guide about how to configure a mobile connection under Trinity ?ThanksDaniele Manghi

Trinity 3.5.12 RPM for EL6
by Francois Andriot 23 Aug '11

23 Aug '11

Hello, After using Trinity 3.5.12 for months under RHEL 6, I think it's time to share my packages. They run fine under RHEL 6, Scientific Linux 6 and probably Centos 6 too. I've just written a minimalistic page with instructions and a YUM repository here: http://trinity.mangafrance.com/ Source RPMS are also provided. Have fun ! Francois Andriot

Problems connecting to a router
by daniele.manghi＠libero.it 23 Aug '11

23 Aug '11

Good morning. I've installed Kubuntu(Maverick)+Trinity from your preassembledbinary distribution, to replace my old Fedora 8 - still retaining a KDE 3.5, with which Iwas very happy, instead of getting a KDE 4.x. All seemed OK, but, unfortunately, I am not able anymore to connect through wi-fi to the Linux system which was acting as my router to the Internet. The connecting procedure works if I configurethis wi-fi connection with fixed IP address and DNS address. It breaks at the IP configuration step if I configure this connection as DHCP-based (as I was used to). I did not changed absolutely nothing in the router configuration, so I was expecting all would have worked seamlessly. I realized that, with DHCP, the connection from router to Internet must be ok for all to work well, butit is certainly so, because I can access the Internet from the router's desktop. Do you have any idea of which the problem could be ?ThanksDaniele Manghi

hald not running?
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 16 Aug '11

16 Aug '11

Hi! I just happen to have a wierd problem on a T61p + wheezy: kpowersave was running, but no battery or cpu information was shown. As it is, hald does not start. When I put a "lshal" in rc.local, hald is running and anything works fine. So my question is, why does this happen? I way quite surprised, because the same image runs on a T60p (which is quite the same hardware) and there hald is running by default. Nik -- Mag. Some emails downloaded to KMail 1.9.9 just "disappear"
by Lisi 12 Aug '11

12 Aug '11

I have been having problems with POP 3 and Gmail in that some emails are there but seem not to download. I have established (with the expenditure of some time) that the mails download (I have sat and watched them do so) and then disappear. I have forwarded the mails through two Gmail addresses and one totally different email provider. In every case they simply disappear. They don't even land in the wastebin. Has anyone any ideas, *please*. My next idea is to destroy all my filters and gradually restore them and see if the recalcitrant emails are being misfiled in some mythical and non-existent folder. But that is a large task, and I am loathe to do it if someone can offer something easier or more sure of success. I would be doing it in desperation, and not in expectation of success. Thanks, Lisi

Congratulations and thank you
by Nate Bargmann 10 Aug '11

10 Aug '11

First off, let me thank Tim for taking on the project of keeping KDE 3.5 alive and to everyone who has helped in whatever capacity in this endeavor. I'm a refugee of KDE 3.5 who feels like he came back home again. I first adopted KDE full time during the 3.4 series which is when it matured enough to capture me due to eye candy and finally having hardware capable of a full desktop environment. This would have been late 2005 as I recall. I was quite satisfied with KDE3 especially once I learned all the neat things one could do with it that just blew me away (and I know that I barely scratched the surface). As the maintenance stopped on KDE3 and the rumblings of how fantastic KDE4 would be, I waited in anticipation. I tried some live CDs from the 4,1 release until Debian included 4.2 in its Sid archive. I did my best to make do and like it and stuck with it on my main desktop until late last year when I installed a dual port card and set it up for zaphod heads for two independent desktops and KDE4 turned itself inside out and proved unworthy of the setup. GNOME was a bit better but far from perfect. I found that XFCE handles the setup quite acceptably. In early 2010 I gave Linux Mint a try on my main laptop and was impressed with their implementation of GNOME and moved to Ubuntu 10.4 Until I opted to go back to Debian Wheezy late last year with XFCE. XFCE and GNOME were acceptable but never quite as complete as KDE3 and while I knew of the Trinity project, I didn't investigate it until late last week. I have since installed it on two Squeeze boxes (one a desktop and the other a laptop I keep in my pickup) and my main Wheezy laptop. Overall I am pleased and impressed with the effort. I can tell that improvements have been made. One chin scrather is why I get two WiCD icons in the system tray, but I'll figure that one out later. Keep up the good work! - Nate >> -- "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears this is true." Ham radio, Linux, bikes, and more: http://www.n0nb.us

up-to-date distros that include Trinity KDE pre-installed?
by C W 06 Aug '11

06 Aug '11

Hi I love KDE4 & KDE 3. I recently tried Porteus GNU/Linux which comes with Trinity KDE pre-installed. It is an up-to-date distro, not one or two years old. Porteus with Trinity is awesome & very fast, the only problem is it is not designed to be installed to a hard drive in a traditional sense. It's only meant to be used as a liveCD or live USB drive or live off of the hard drive. What are some distros that include Trinity KDE pre-installed? Ideally, ones that have a liveDVD or liveCD option would be best. Thanks very much. MS-Office 2003 under wine
by Jeff Taylor 06 Aug '11

06 Aug '11

I've had a problem with opening existing documents for some time now, but attributed the problem to the number of upgrades my computer has been through. However last week I installed a copy of trinity-maverick on a freshly-wiped machine, and I'm still having the same problems. Hopefully someone can help? I have a laptop running trinity under karmic, and Office 2003 runs fine from that machine, and is able to open all of these documents without problems. - Installed trinity-maverick 32-bit - Installed Office 2003 Pro (the same CD used to install on the previous Windows platform, where the required documents were created) Unable to open pre-existing .doc files. If a document did try to open, it would immediately crash with a Windows error report. Other documents completely crashed Word/wine without even an error. - Installed the wine repo from ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa - Upgraded to wine1.3 and winetricks Still unable to open documents. Now they all crash Word/wine without any errors. - Ran winecfg and set richedit20.dll, richedit32.dll & msxml3.dll as navite (Windows) - installed riched30 through winetricks Attempting to open any documents results in Word crashing with a Windows error report, then trying to re-launch Word and recover the crashed document. Note that I can open and use Word by itself without any problems, but I cannot open any saved documents. At this point I attempted to reinstall/repair Office 2003. This did not change anything. I ran winword.exe from CLI and captured the following when I tried to open a document... $ wine WINWORD.EXE fixme:ole:CoInitializeSecurity (0x413ea8,-1,(nil),(nil),1,3,(nil),72,(nil)) - stub! err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {24e669e1-e90f-4595-a012-b0fd3ccc5c5a} not registered err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {24e669e1-e90f-4595-a012-b0fd3ccc5c5a} could be created for context 0x1 fixme:storage:Storage_ConstructTransacted Unimplemented flags 110022 fixme:storage:create_storagefile Storage share mode not implemented. fixme:psdrv:PSDRV_DeviceCapabilities DC_BINADJUST: stub. fixme:psdrv:PSDRV_DeviceCapabilities DC_BINADJUST: stub. fixme:psdrv:PSDRV_DeviceCapabilities DC_BINADJUST: stub. fixme:psdrv:PSDRV_ExtEscape QUERYESCSUPPORT(25) - not supported. fixme:psdrv:PSDRV_DeviceCapabilities DC_BINADJUST: stub. fixme:msctf:ThreadMgrSource_AdviseSink (0x1e0738) Unhandled Sink: {6f77c993-d2b1-446e-853e-5912efc8a286} fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnLayoutChange STUB:(0x1e73d8) fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnLayoutChange STUB:(0x1e73d8) fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnLockGranted OnLockGranted called for something other than an EditSession fixme:psdrv:PSDRV_DeviceCapabilities DC_BINADJUST: stub. fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnStartEditTransaction STUB:(0x1e73d8) fixme:shell:SHGetFileInfoW SHGFI_OVERLAYINDEX unhandled fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnEndEditTransaction STUB:(0x1e73d8) fixme:shell:SHGetFileInfoW SHGFI_OVERLAYINDEX unhandled fixme:shell:IShellView_fnSaveViewState (0x1e8140) stub fixme:shell:IShellView_fnSaveViewState (0xcda4a8) stub fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnStartEditTransaction STUB:(0x1e73d8) fixme:psdrv:PSDRV_DeviceCapabilities DC_BINADJUST: stub. fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnLayoutChange STUB:(0x2194b8) fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnLayoutChange STUB:(0x2194b8) fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnLayoutChange STUB:(0x2194b8) fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnLayoutChange STUB:(0x1e73d8) fixme:msctf:TextStoreACPSink_OnLockGranted OnLockGranted called for something other than an EditSession fixme:imm:ImmDisableIME (-1): stub fixme:thread:NtQueryInformationThread Cannot get kerneltime or usertime of other threads fixme:thread:NtQueryInformationThread info class 9 not supported yet fixme:thread:NtQueryInformationThread info class 9 not supported yet fixme:thread:NtQueryInformationThread info class 9 not supported yet fixme:advapi:RegisterEventSourceW ((null),L"Microsoft Office 11"): stub fixme:advapi:ReportEventW (0xcafe4242,0x0001,0x0000,0x000003e8,(nil),0x0008,0x000000ee,0x3009a1b4,0x4cc4c0): stub err:eventlog:ReportEventW L"winword.exe" err:eventlog:ReportEventW L"11.0.6568.0" err:eventlog:ReportEventW L"42e178a5" err:eventlog:ReportEventW L"winword.exe" err:eventlog:ReportEventW L"11.0.6568.0" err:eventlog:ReportEventW L"42e178a5" err:eventlog:ReportEventW L"0" err:eventlog:ReportEventW L"00068a09" fixme:advapi:DeregisterEventSource (0xcafe4242) stub

broken systemsettings
by Felix Miata 05 Aug '11

05 Aug '11

Trinity freshly installed on a HTTP Lucid minimal install, several modules are complaining about libpython2.6.so not found in paths, even though libpython2.6 is installed. One such is system services. Why is there a main menu item "system settings" that opens systemsettings, even though KControl is installed? KControl only shows the KControl start page when any of Monitor & Display, System Services, User Management, Windows Applications & others are selected. Opening Login Manager causes message "unable to create folder /usr/share/apps/kdm/faces", which isn't surprising given that KDM shows no icons in the user list. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." remove Plymouth?
by Felix Miata 04 Aug '11

04 Aug '11

I got Trinity installed a few hours ago after an initial minimal HTTP Lucid install, which had left me with a clean text only boot process. Now with kubuntu-desktop-KDE3 installed I also have the Plymouth GUI nonsense. apt-get remove plymouth wants to remove virtually the entire system. How do I make the pre-KDM GUI stuff go away permanently? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. digikam plugins, perhaps (sent again)
by Anthony Winter 27 Jul '11

No answer last time. Does that mean nobody now uses digikam in trinity? ---------------------------previous post-------------------- Digikam 0.9.6 seems to be missing a lot of functions; for example, in Edit mode, Color, Enhance, have no options visible. Transform has a minimal set. I presume that there are some plugins missing. didkam, kipi plugins and showfoto are all installed. uname -a Linux vega 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Mon Jun 13 04:13:06 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux debian - squeeze. network is down when hibernating, WICD does not work.

Hello I asked around and it seems that the knetworkmanager has a problem with hibernating and then resuming. WICD seems to be an alternative but does not work in trinity, at least when I try to scan the scan option can not be activated. Any comments on this? Thanks Uwe Brauer

unable to mount USB hard drive
by Marvin L. Jones 21 Jul '11

21 Jul '11

I recently upgraded my netbook from Ubuntu karmic 9.10 to 10.04 LTS, after which I upgraded the installed Trinity 3.5.11. At first everything seemed to be Just Fine. But, I found that when I attempted to connect my external USB hard drive it resulted in a pop-up error message: Method "Mount" with signature "ssas" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" doesn't exist The same USB hard drive mounts (and unmounts) Just Fine on my older karmic 9.10 box with Trinity 3.5.11. (The drive is formatted ext3 and I use it to back up $HOME(s) on my linux boxes.) The netbook is remembering something about the mount attempt, because after a cold re-boot, _without_ the USB drive connected, there remains a mount point: /media/MLJ_USB_1/ -- "MLJ_USB_1" being the label of the USB hard drive. And I cannot `umount` it: "... is not mounted (according to mtab)". `mount` shows: "/dev/sda1 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro)" -- of course the USB drive is NOT connected at all. (The USB drive shows properly as "/dev/sda5 / _ext3_ rw,errors=remount-ro 0 0" on the karmic box.) If I log out of Trinity and into Gnome, I can mount and unmount the drive without a problem. If I leave it mounted -- log out of Gnome and log back into Trinity, it is still mounted, and shows as formatted ext3. If I then (in KDE) unmount it, unplug it, and plug it back in, I get: Method "Mount" with signature "ssas" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" doesn't exist Looking through the Bug List does not yield anything that fits my problem. Then, being paranoid, I checked to see if the same problem existed with the SD memory card socket. Yes, same problem. And, the SD card mounts and unmounts Just Fine in Gnome. What to do? kcontrol blank
by Tim Williams 18 Jul '11

18 Jul '11

I've finally managed to produce some working Trinity Mandriva packages (available from http://www.autotrain.org/mdv-kde/mdv2010.2.html). However, i've got a problem with kcontrol, it starts up fine, but it doesn't load any configuration options, so the main config panels are blank. This could be being caused by one of the mandriva patches, rather than being a bug in the Trinity core, but i'd appreciate some suggestions as to what I should be looking for. Other 'lesser' configuation screens, eg "Configure Desktop" and "Configure Panel" seem to work fine. Trinity and Flash (again)
by Nick Leverton 17 Jul '11

17 Jul '11

Hi, I'm running Trinity 3.5.12 which I've patched with the Flash 10 patch ( http://www.trinitydesktop.org/patches/r1224648.diff ). This works fine with Flash 10.2, but doesn't seem to work with 10.3 or with the new Flash 11 beta. Symptoms with both are that it segfaults somewhere in the Flash player. I can provide backtraces if helpful. My base O/S is Debian Squeeze, i386 userland and flash plugin running on an amd64 kernel. To help me narrow the problem down, is anyone else experiencing this problem with the newer Flash updates, please ? icedove/iceweasel gui wrong font size & display switching
by Nicolas Bercher 03 Jul '11

03 Jul '11

Hi, I have some annoying gui font sizes problems with icedove 3.0 (i.e. thunderbird) and iceweasel 4.0 (i.e. firefox) under Trinity on Debian Squeeze. I use a laptop (1280×800) with a docking station and an external 19" screen (1280*1024). When I plug the laptop on its docking station and change display settings to use the 19" screen, everything resizes correctly (the desktop, trinity apps, etc.) except iceweasel and icedove that begin to use very huge fonts sizes in gui display (menus, toolbars, etc.). When I set display back to the laptop screen, the issue is still there. Recently, I upgraded to iceweasel 4.0 and I remember that I didn't have this issue with iceweasel 3.5.x. So I guess this might be linked to a wrong integration of gtk (libgtk2.0-0, versions above 2.10) into Trinity. Are there too many new features in gtk that are not well handled by gtk-qt-engine-trinity? You'll a screenshot of the situation here: http://users.klvb-larve.org/nico/bugs/icedove-wrong-font-size.png Advice are welcome! Nicolas PS: more details on the icedove & iceweasel versions: I got iceweasel 4.0 (4.0.1-1~bpo60+1) thanks to this backport repository available from mozilla.debian.net: http://mozilla.debian.net/ squeeze-backports/iceweasel-4.0 i386 Packages I use the Debian stable version of icedove: 3.0.11-1+squeeze2

keyboard failure
by Nicolas Bercher 27 Jun '11

27 Jun '11

Hi, Since a few days I regularly have troubles with my keyboard under Trinity: it doesn't work anymore after some time, except for a few combinations like ctrl-alt-suppr, ctrl-alt-f1, and the leds are still responding (num & caps lock, etc.) but *I cannot type texte anymore*. I can still switch to tty1 and use my keyboard normally in there. Since the mouse is responding normally under X, I can also launch a new X session (via the "T menu") and experience that the keyboard is working well on the kdm-trinity login screen. So this really looks like a Trinity issue or, at least, a Trinity x-session related issue. I use Debian squeeze and Trinity on a laptop and an usb keyboard. Note that: - the laptop sometimes has heat problems and the "X screen" gone crazy, I think becasue the video chip is too hot (often the case on laptops... and that's a shame). But, I'll be surprised if this keyboard issue is linked to hardware issue because the keyboard is working everywhere else, - the behavior is exactly the same on the laptop's built-in keyboard, - plugging out/in the keayboard has no effect, - plugging in another keayboard has no effect. I don't know what to do with that. I found nothing related in the main log files. Maybe this is a race hardware issue... Any advice or tracing tricks would be appreciated. Thank you for reading. Nicolas

Kdesktop crash on login on Archlinux

Hi all, I'm currently trying out Archlinux in a qemu virtual machine and installed the binary Trinity 3.5.13 64 Bit svn packages. Thanks a lot for those! I'm getting a kdesktop crash on login. It is asked on the Archlinux Trinity wiki page that people with this issue should should let the page author know about it, but I'm not sure where. I hope this is the correct place. Research brought me to this entry in the Trinity bug tracker: http://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=456 Might this be the same issue and already fixed? In that case, I just have to wait for updated Arch packages, right? Thanks, Sanne

Trinity and LibreOffice
by Neil Youngman 12 May '11

12 May '11

I'm finding that LibreOffice has serious issues since I moved to Trinity. Anything that requires a file chooser dialog, such as A File->Open or Insert->Picture->From File brings up the crash handler. As I had no issues with LibreOffice under KDE4, it seems likely that some interaction with Trinity is causing the crashes. I tried upgrading from 3.3.0 to 3.3.2, but the crashes have persisted. Is anyone else experiencing this? Neil Youngman

Hi, I've recently upgraded to Ubuntu natty and would like to know if the trinity project is going to support natty as well.? Actually, I'm working already with the maverick packages of Trinity and everything works find, except sftp connection in krusader and konqueror. When I try to connect via sftp I just get "Error encountered while talking to ssh". For the moment I use the KDE4 version of krusader whenever I need an sftp connection and use the trinity version for the rest. Regards, Stefan

bluetooth SUCCESS!
by turi comito 30 Apr '11

Hi people, I founded a solution about Trinity DE and bluetooth, at least to connect a telephone and transfer files from/to. As everyone know the kde bluetooth stack doesn''t work in our kde/trinity, so, after a lot of attemps, I use with succes a workaround on Blueman with konqueror. Here the steps: 1. install blueman: *apt-get install blueman* 2. start it from shell or reboot system or reboot trinity session 3. right-click on bluetooth (blueman) icon in the panel 4. select "Local Services.." 5. in the windows that is opened click "transfer" in the left menu and after on "advanced" 6. now delete the existing command (nautilus --obex etc. etc.) and replace with: *konqueror obex://[%d]/* (VERY IMPORTANT THE BRACKETS: *[ ] *", without it doesn't work) 7. apply the modifications and close the windows 8. right-click on blueman icon in the panel and select "Browse files on device..." choose the device and.. enjoy I hope it will be useful for our community. -- * _______ * *Turi Comito*

I've done it!
by Neil Youngman 28 Apr '11

28 Apr '11

Finally, more than 3 months after discovering Trinity, I've bitten the bullet. I've nuked KDE4 and installed Trinity. My desktop now feels like it's mine again. The upgrade wasn't entirely smooth. It took a bit of effort to make sure KDE4 was completely wiped and a fair number of Gnome packages seemed to be collateral damage in the Trinity installation. I don't think anything important went. After installing trinity, I no longer had a graphical login and startx gave me Gnome desktop. I tried "dpkg-reconfigure kdm-trinity", which failed because kdm-trinity wasn't installed! After installing kdm-trinity, the desktop looks good and seems much more responsive than KDE4. The only other glitches so far were kmail complaining about corrupt indexes and not finding my incoming email settings. After the indexes were rebuilt and I replaced the missing incoming account, it seems to be working well. I haven't been using Trinity long enough to be entirely confident, but it's looking nice and I'm sure I won't go back to KDE4. Neil Youngman

Upgrade lenny -> squeeze
by Brad Alexander 28 Apr '11

28 Apr '11

I'm having an issue with my daughter's netbook that I just upgraded from lenny to squeeze. The main problem is that it is 2100 miles away. In any case, I did the upgrade according to the squeeze release notes. When I did the upgrade, I changed the sources.list to point to squeeze, including trinity. Terribly buggy
by Volker Wysk 14 Apr '11

14 Apr '11

Hello I've changed from KDE4 to Trinity, because KDE4 is so buggy. Now I'm trying to set up everything, but Trinity appears to be very buggy too. Everything worked fine when I was using KDE 3.5, but now it's a mess. I'm wondering it Trinity and KDE4 get in each other's way. - I can't set the screen's resolution, refresh rate, or gamma value. It used to be configurable via the control center, but the controls disappeared from there. You can use System/KRandRTray to set the resolution and refresh rate, but it won't remember the setting. - Amarok crashes since a few days. A few seconds after you start a song, it generates a segmentation fault. I've tired it in KDE4, but it's the same. I've removed and installed the amarok package, but it's still the same. I've removed all amarok related configuration files (those with "amarok" in the name) from ~/.trinity and from ~/.kde, but it stays the same. Of course the crash manager crashes, when you try to report the bug. :-> - KMail crashed ("aborted") immediately after starting it. When you started it in the terminal, you even got some information about the cause: kmail(5507)/kdecore (KConfigSkeleton) KCoreConfigSkeleton::writeConfig: !!!!!!! ERROR !!!!!!! - KHTML default stylesheet version mismatch. Aborting. Check your installation. File used was: /opt/trinity/share/apps/khtml/css/html4.css. Expected STYLE_VERSION 1 Then I've tried it in KDE4, and - bingo - it works again, even after going back to Trinity. - When logging out of Trinity, there sometimes appears an error message that some policy is faulty (I have to write the message down). When logging into KDE4, and into and out of Trinity again, the message disappears. - The font sizes have a life of their own. Sometimes when I log in, they are huge, and mess up the layout (amarok, for instance). Sometimes they are tiny. When I start amarok, and I get huge fonts, it fixes itself when I quit and start amarok again. I can configure the fonts in the respective program's settings, but only part of the fonts can be configured there, and changes take effect only sometimes, or only for some font settings. I know that there are some fonts, to be configured in the control center. But that works only sometimes. There are a lot of places where the fonts are almost unreadaby small (the menus, for instance). I've tried to configure them, but it doesn't work, or it works and goes back again. This isn't a bug report. I have to take a closer look, first. I wonder if I'm the only one with all of these problems. If not, how can you live with it? But from what I've seen on the net, Trinity should be quite stable and useable. So what's going on here??

No drag and drop into Firefox 4
by sanne＠lavabit.com 05 Apr '11

05 Apr '11

Hi all, I tried the recently released Firefox 4.0 binary from Mozilla.org on my (old) Ubuntu 9.10-based system with Trinity 3.5.11 (64 Bit). I found that I can't drag and drop files from Konqueror into Firefox 4 to open them. I filed a bugreport [1] for Firefox at mozilla.org and did some tests with Trinity 10.10, Kubuntu 10.10, and also with non-Qt applications on all systems. I found that drag-drop open files in Firefox 4 works with every application that is not Qt3 based, and doesn't work with Qt3 based programs, regardless of desktop environment. It works for Firefox 3.x. I promised to ask here if anybody would be willing to test (in case it's just me) and report back at the bugreport, so I'd appreciate any input from here. The Firefox developer who answered me also would take input from the Trinity developers, if there's something he could do on the Firefox side. I read that there's a port of Trinity to Qt 4 on the way, so maybe this problem might sort of go away on it's own someday. :) Should I also file a bug report at the Trinity bugtracker? I'd appreciate any input on this issue. Thanks, Sanne [1] https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645492

Synaptic and Trinity
by Volker Wysk 02 Apr '11

02 Apr '11

Hello The synaptic package manager comes with two .desktop files: /usr/share/applications/synaptic.desktop /usr/share/applications/synaptic-kde.desktop The first one contains: NotShowIn=KDE; The second one: OnlyShowIn=KDE; Calling synaptic in the application menu calls the first one (the two program names/menu entries are identical). A broken root password entry box appears - the path of the executable which should be called with root privileges is empty. I'm wondering if the NotShowIn/OnlyShowIn directives are the cause of the problem. I've experimented in adding "Trinity;" to "KDE;", but without success. Does anyone know what this means? White text wanted on dark blue desktop
by Lisi 25 Mar '11

I am setting up a Squeeze+Trinity box to demonstrate to someone with very poor sight. He is also a newbie, which means that everything must be fully labeled. I want to be able to show a light background to the desktop with dark/black text under the (enlarged) icons and a dark background with white text. This is something I have done in the past with KDE 3.x, but can't remember how. It is desirable, because many partially sighted people find white on black easier to read than black on white. This chap may not, hence my wanting to show him both. Help, please. Thanks, Lisi

Partial Installation Recommendation
by Ed Hurst 20 Mar '11

Is there a recommended collection of packages for someone who would prefer to add Trinity, rather than have it fully replace, say GNOME? Konversation: Settings not being applied
by Kristopher Gamrat 19 Mar '11

19 Mar '11

Hi, I finally got my hard disk in and I've installed Debian Squeeze using a basic install (base plus laptop stuff plus ssh server, no GUI or anything else). From there I installed Trinity. All seems fine, except that konversation isn't displaying time stamps in the chat window even though it shows as enabled in the configuration window for Konversation, and it won't display the tray icon when I enable that. I am also noticing that it isn't adding the option to enable the tray icon to ~/.trinity/share/config/konversaitonrc and that ~/.trinity/share/apps/konversation/ is emtpy, yet I have ownership and both read and write permissions in both. I remember seeing an issue on the mailing list before that autorun settings in Kcontrol weren't saving but the fix is unrelated to chat, and autorun is working fine here anyway. Are there any konversation users around that can help? -- Kris "Piki" Ark Linux Webmaster Trinity Desktop Environment Packager

Alt and Meta
by Volker Wysk 19 Mar '11

19 Mar '11

Hi! I want to allocate Alt as Alt, and the two Windows-Keys as Meta. I had this set up, using xmodmap. But after upgrading KDE it no longer works, neither with Trinity nor with KDE4. It looks like KDE3/4 does the allocation on its own now. Does anyone have an idea how this can be done? Cheers, V.W.

Issues on Squeeze
by Ed Hurst 17 Mar '11

17 Mar '11

I noticed some of these were already mentioned, though not fixed or answered, so far as I can determine. KDM -- won't allow me to shut down, reboot or much of anything else except login. Kdesu -- refuses to accept my root password. I have to jack around to setup the X auth for root using the commandline. KWifiManager -- If I launch from the commandline as root, it does find a network, but the wrong one. I can't get it to let me select my in-home wifi connection. It lists it for a scan, but I see no means to make it select it. From my user account, I can't do anything with it at all. This last one is a show-stopper for me. If I can't connect and configure on the fly wherever I go, the DE is useless. So, what would you need from me to diagnose this? -- Ed Hurst -------- Open for Business - http://ofb.biz/ Kiln of the Soul - http://soulkiln.org/ blog - http://soulkiln.blogspot.com/

Xine: something eats "cursor up"
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 15 Mar '11

15 Mar '11

New day, new game. After I got the medium autolauncher back to work I found an other funny thing: something eats up "cursur up" keys in the xine window. It's a xine only phenomenon, no other application is afflicted. It afflicts only the "cursour up" key, no others. kdeaccessibility-trinity is not installed. Thoughts? Nik

Problem with medium application autostart
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 14 Mar '11

14 Mar '11

Hi! At last I made the transition to trinity + squeeze with the last of my boxes, the infamous office box. I saw my desktop go down in flames (which actually was the falt of som weired xorg problem) and raise from the ashes 2 days later. After all I am very satisfied, I didn't loose my kwallet nor my kmail settings and date - in fact I didn't loose anything important :-) There is only one issue left, that I was not able to correct: the medium application autostart does not work as I exect it. What I got so far: After I log in, plug in a DVD or USB storage device. Usually there should pop up a dialog asdking me what medium was found and what to do next. Now that dialog does not show up. But when I open konqueror and go to media:/ I see the plugged in device (not mounted). I can open it from there. I unplug the USB device, the icon disappears as expected. I start kcontol, go to "Peripherials/Storage Media", there select "Defaults" and "Apply", close kcontrol, plug in the USB storage device and the famouse dialogbox shows up! When I log out and log in again the dialogbox does not show up until I open kcontrol and do these steps. Now I cannot find what kcontrol does at this stage to make things work. I tried strace, but kcontol does not change the contents of any file in .trinity. It opens and reads these files, but nothing is written: .trinity/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus .trinity/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/xine-dvd.desktop .trinity/share/config/kcontrolrc .trinity/share/config/kdeglobals .trinity/share/config/khtmlrc .trinity/share/config/kio_httprc .trinity/share/config/kioslaverc .trinity/share/config/medianotifierrc xine-dvd.desktop plays DVDs, if inserted. At least when I first start kcontrol ;-) I made a diff from the ~/.trinity tree befor and after running kcontrol, but there are no changes. So, is there a way how I can get the medium autoplay to work? Nik

Problems with repositories and aptitude update
by Lisi 05 Mar '11

05 Mar '11

I am installing (or trying to!) Trinity on a fresh minimal install of Squeeze. But I have run into problems (which I did not the other day on a full install). I have edited my sources.list as instructed on the Pearson website, and have checked and rechecked the repositories. They seem to be fine, but when I do <aptitude update> I get a lot of error messages like this one: [ ERR] Reading package lists E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net_trinity_trinity_debian_dists_squeeze_main_i18n_Translation-en E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. E: Couldn't rebuild package cache And obviously couldn't install Trinity either, with similar errors. I am completely baffled. Can anyone throw light on this? Lisi

mount usb with the wrong user
by Uwe Brauer 03 Mar '11

03 Mar '11

Hello I installed trinity on a PC running Ubuntu Lucid (I did not do the original installation so I am not sure if something went wrong) However when I connect in kde3 an usb device with a linux partion 2 things happen - the kde daemon pops up twice instead of only once - the device is mounted but the files belong to another user of this PC. This is very annoying because in order to copy I have to use sudo and then later the chown chgrp command. I looked up the fstab file in /etc but there I can't see the source of the problem. K3b for Trinity
by Lisi 01 Mar '11

01 Mar '11

I have Trinity set up on Squeeze and now want to install K3b. I most emphatically do NOT want anything KDE4. How do I set about it? Alternatively, a search of my emails retrieves the information that many of you have K3b by default. The fact that I do not have it, suggests that I did not install Trinity correctly, although I thought that I had meticulously followed the directions on Timothy's site. What ought I to have done, to have what I would regard as the sine qua non of a functional DE? (Of which K3b forms a part.) Thanks, Lisi

Proposal for Trinity Defaults for 3.5.13 (brainstorm)
by David C. Rankin 01 Mar '11

01 Mar '11

All, I have been through the kcontrol settings looking at default setting that could be changed in 3.5.13 to reduce the number of settings that would need to be changed on each new install (at least for me). The idea is to make Trinity better right out-of-the-box. I know everybody has different 'preferences' and this isn't intended to try and dictate default settings by any stretch, but after numerous installs, it is clear that the current defaults would benefit from a few changes. The goal is the come up with a default set that minimizes the number of changes that the average user would normally make and to give Trinity the good clean default looks and behavior I have taken the time to create a web page to collect input and give the developers a handy reference to look at the next time they are in the defaults section of the code. Check it out and add your comments here: http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/wiki/bin/view/Specifications/Developmen… I've taken a first cut and coming up with foswiki formatting that makes it readable (I'm not sure I succeeded). If you have a better idea for distinguishing kcontrol -> entry -> tab (1,2..) and making it more readable, feel free to have at it. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Desktop/Terminal bug?
by Luciano ES 26 Feb '11

26 Feb '11

Can you please confirm this bug? Minimize all apps, so the Desktop area is visible. Right-click an empty spot in the Desktop screen and select Open Terminal Here. Firefox is launched! If Firefox is already running, a new Firefox window launches. Weird! That menu has "Ctrl+T" next to the "Open Terminal Here" option. Indeed, when all applications are minimized and the Desktop screen is visible, Ctrl+T launches Firefox. Does that happen to you too? -- Luciano ES >>
