Kmail nightmare
by Luciano ES 24 Feb '11

24 Feb '11

It's not that I want any special treatmente here, it's just that I do. Every time I boot/log in, I have to suffer through these bugs: http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=428 http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=431 Bug #431 forces me to perform two checks before I can go on. Those are bad enough, but really bad is this bug with Kmail which is forcing me to log off and log in several times a day: http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=438 This has just become unacceptable. I use my computer to work, and I need to check my mail several times a day. The damn thing keeps getting jammed over and over, I have to restart my session several times a day. And this is Linux, not Windows or Mac, so restarting a session actually means closing all my currently running apps then restarting them after I log in again. They start automatically, but it takes a while for them to be ready. It's not like Windows and Mac, where we can log off, come back and everything is still there up and running just the way we left it. And I have to reconfigure my keyboard every frigging time I log in. It's driving me nuts. Another very irritating thing is to think that I had none of these problems when I was using the 9.04 Trinity distro. How can software get WORSE? I just upgraded because... Well, pure peer pressure. Everywhere I go (forums, IRC) people keep telling me "yak yak, your OS is old as dust, upgrade already, yakety-yak". Damn, do I regret upgrading! But I just have NO TIME to go back now. I've wasted too much time already fine tuning the one I have now. Please, for the love of humanity, get Kmail fixed stat. Thank you for listening. -- Luciano ES >>

Any interest in collecting kthemes or color-schemes for Trinity?
by David C. Rankin 24 Feb '11

24 Feb '11

All, I have a number of kde3 themes (and emerald themes) that I have created over the years that I'm happy to give to trinity if there is any interest in collecting them. Here is an example of a BlackGold (dark) theme that I have updated in Trinity: [165k] http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/trinity/ss/dcrTrinityBlackGold.jpg The theme uses keramic style and a dark color scheme: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/trinity/cfg/color-schemes/dcrTrinityBlackG… (you may have to adjust the gold depending on monitor brightness :) The .kth files are a bit large for me to host at home. If you want to try the ktheme, (with font & icon settings, etc...) it is available here: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/trinity/cfg/ktheme/dcrBlackGoldTrinity.kth Let me know if there is any interest in collecting these to either package or make available on the wiki. I probably have a dozen kthemes in varying darknesses and probably 100+ emerald themes. A sample of the emerald themes are available here: http://drankinatty.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=0 I guess I could just upload the .kth files to deviantart as well..., but if you want to broaden the selection in Trinity -- they are all GPL. -- David C. hello all, I'm a fresh trinity user and so far, I like it :) so I decided to resurrect some of my favourite kde 3.x programs which are not in the trinity repos and built very simple (checkinstall-) packages from them. they can be found here: http://www.hoernerfranzracing.de/zip/trinity/ maybe someone here can use them, too. werner

konqueror and SOCKS
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 22 Feb '11

Is there a way to get konqueror to work with a SOCKS proxy? I do this: $ ssh -D 12345 user@remote Iceweasel works fine when I set the proxy to SOCKS localhost:12345. now I'd like konqeror to use that SOCKS4/5 server on localhost. But whatever I check on the SOCKS tab, I get an error message. I tried tsocks, but konqueror still connects directly to the net. Does anybody have an idea? Nik

Fwd: [arch-general] Trinity Binaries - Unofficial Repo - Thank You Kainting Chen!
by David C. Rankin 20 Feb '11

20 Feb '11

Here is a quick forward from the Arch list regarding Trinity binaries for Arch Linux (svn) ----------- All, Kaiting Chen has provided server space for Trinity binaries. Currently I have the i686 files uploaded and will upload x86_64 shortly (after my kids are done with toontown....) The url for the i686 repo is: http://www.kiwilight.com/~drankinatty/trinity/i686/ (Trinity packages are 2/19/2011 builds) The x86_64 repo will be the same url with x86_64. Trinity needs a clean environment currently (no kdemod3). If you have had a prior kdemod3 install, then delete: /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/ksycoca /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/ksycocastamp and move ~/.kde somewhere else. If you have kde4 installed, then expect akonadi/nepomuk and all the kde4 autostart files in /usr/share/autostart to run (Trinity devs are working on a way to ignore all the kde4 autostart files) To install trinity, just add the repo to /etc/pacman.conf: [trinity] Server = http://www.kiwilight.com/~drankinatty/trinity/i686/ Then just do 'pacman -Sy trinity-kdewebdev' and it will pull in the complete Trinity desktop (kdewebdev requires all trinity dependencies) I recommend installing it in either a clean Arch install, or just create a new Arch virtualbox VM and install it there. It is a darn good looking desktop. x86_64 packages by the morning :) See: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Trinity for current details :) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. -- David C. Current Build Times & Quick & Dirty build script outline - just FYI
by David C. Rankin 20 Feb '11

20 Feb '11

All, Here are recent build times for Trinity svn on a middle of the road P4 3.2G box. (nothing special - old Dell GX280 'small form factor'): 10:55 supersff:~/tblds> grep Feb bldlog.txt Feb 19 01:44:45 building: trinity-qt3 Feb 19 02:06:12 building: trinity-pyqt3 Feb 19 02:17:05 building: trinity-tqtinterface Feb 19 02:18:16 building: trinity-arts Feb 19 02:22:02 building: trinity-kdelibs Feb 19 03:01:01 building: trinity-kdebase Feb 19 03:36:42 building: trinity-kdevelop Feb 19 03:51:13 building: trinity-kdewebdev Feb 19 03:58:21 done! 2:14 beginning to end. For anyone packaging Trinity, the basic 'outline' of the build script layout I used was (link to full script below): #!/bin/bash <snip> # array of build directories -- in order declare -a blddirs blddirs=('trinity-qt3' 'trinity-pyqt3' 'trinity-tqtinterface' 'trinity-arts' 'trinity-kdelibs' 'trinity-kdebase' 'trinity-kdevelop' 'trinity-kdewebdev') # loop through the blddirs to build each in order for((i=0;i<${#blddirs[@]};i++)); do # copy your dev dir to the build dir (I don't build in my original dev dir) # if working with srpms, you could either install them at this point and # build with 'rpmbuild -bb specfile' or just 'rpmbuild --rebuild srpm'. cp -a ${pbbase}/${blddirs[$i]} $bldbase # if the dir got copied (or spec file exists) -- use it, if not skip it if [[ -d ${bldbase}/${blddirs[$i]} ]]; then # start time to screen & log echo -e "\n$(date '+%b %e %T') building: ${blddirs[$i]}\n" | tee -a ${bldlog} # change into the build dir cd ${bldbase}/${blddirs[$i]} # move any existing packages out to pkgdir (adjust for .rpm or .deb) echo -e "\n Testing for old packages and moving to ${binsavdir}\n" if ls *tar.xz &>/dev/null; then mv -fv *tar.xz ${binsavdir} | tee -a ${bldlog} fi # build the new package (adjust for rpbbuild -bb or whatever deb uses) (makepkg -s) # install and move new package to $pkgbin dir (adjust as needed) # if the build failed, issue warning an move on echo -e "\n Testing for new packages, installing, and moving to ${binpkgdir}\n" if ls *tar.xz &>/dev/null; then sudo pacman -U --noconfirm *tar.xz | tee -a ${bldlog} mv -fv *tar.xz ${binpkgdir} | tee -a ${bldlog} else echo "WARNING: Build of '${blddirs[$i]}' produced no package, skipping..." | tee -a ${bldlog} fi else echo "WARNING: Directory '${bldbase}/${blddirs[$i]}' not found - skipping" | tee -a ${bldlog} fi done exit 0 The link to the full script is: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/trinity/arch/scr/bldtrinsvn-all.sh It should be able to be easily adapted for rpm based builds or whatever debian and slackware use. The PKGBUILD scripts that Arch Linux uses with "makepkg" work the same way SPEC files work with "rpmbuild" on rpm based distros. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

new squeeze+trinity user
by Paul Cartwright 19 Feb '11

19 Feb '11

well, I totally screwed up my Debian Lenny install last night. I was fighting an application error, made some bad choices, and ended up with a non-useable system. X wouldn't work & I could not get apt/aptitude to do anything worthwhile. SO, 9pm last night I started the squeeze upgrade process. just about finished it last night ( gnome login worked, but KDE was not to be found). That was about 12:30am.. 6am I was back at it.. oops, ran out of "/" file space, that sucks.. removed a bunch of useless apps.. got some space back. Installed trinity.. fixed a few squeeze upgrade issue, and about noon today I had my system back. My wife's desktop looks just like it did yesterday, except it says "trinity" on the left hand side:) I doubt she will notice. Her kmail is up & running, as is my gnome login. # uname -a Linux paulandcilla.homelinux.org 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Wed Jan 12 04:01:41 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux too many trinity apps to list, but here's one: ii kdepim-trinity 4:3.5.12-0debian7+r1178442 Personal Information Management apps from the official KDE3 release yeah!!!!! -- Paul Cartwright

svn kdm chooser - not allowing login?
by David C. Rankin 18 Feb '11

Guys, I started the kdm greeter and it started fine on vt:07. It listed my login and looked nice. I type my password, hit return and .. "Login Failed" Huh? I looked though kdmrc and there didn't seem to be anything that would prevent a user login. root wasn't allowed, but that is the default. Anybody else seeing this? Any thoughts on why? -- David C. trinity, squeeze, laptop-wireless
by Paul Cartwright 18 Feb '11

18 Feb '11

I installed squeeze on my Dell laptop recently. Then I went through the trinity instructions for installing trinity KDE. Once I finished I had no wireless and could find no way to configure it, nothing worked. It is an Intel wireless card, 2915ABG I think. What I did was install LXDE & ceni. logged out, logged into LXDE session, ran ceni, and configured wireless for a static IP on my subnet. logged out & back into trinity & wireless worked. in trinity, when I started, all the networking tools I could find would not configure my wireless. one did show my wireless router, but would not let me add it or connect to it. -- Paul Cartwright

kdewebdev quanta+ - unmet OPTIONAL dependencies
by David C. Rankin 17 Feb '11

17 Feb '11

All, Just a note on the current svn kdewebdev build. There are a few *optional* dependencies for quanta+ that are currently not built. They are probably somewhere in the tree waiting for a cmake port. If not, then we might want to add them to the 'todo' list for the 3.5.13 release. (low priority) Reason - when you first launch quant+ you are greeted with the following list of missing packages: Some applications required for full functionality are missing: - Kommander [http://kommander.kdewebdev.org] - various script based dialogs including the Quick Start dialog will not be available; - Tidy [http://tidy.sourceforge.net] - HTML syntax checking will not be available; - Kompare [http://bruggie.dnsalias.org/kompare] - comparing of files by content will not be available; - GPG (OpenPGP) [http://www.gnupg.de] - preview browser configuration will not be available; - KXSLDbg [http://xsldbg.sourceforge.net/] - XSLT debugging will not be available; - KImageMapEditor [http://www.nongnu.org/kimagemap/] - editing HTML image maps will not be available; - KLinkStatus [http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=12318] - link validity checking will not be available; - Cervisia [http://www.kde.org/apps/cervisia] - CVS management plugin will not be available. For Arch Linux (as with most other distributions) tidy and gnupg are already available and can simply be added as dependencies of the kdewebdev package by the person packaging it. (note: the gpg dependency is for gnupg NOT gnupg2) However, the following are only available as kde4 packages (at least on Arch) - Kommander - Kompare - KXSLDbg - KImageMapEditor - KLinkStatus - Cervisia (usually packaged as part of the kde-sdk) Also, since cvs is somewhat outmoded by svn,git,etc.. the quanta dependency for cervisia could just be dropped if it presents too much of a problem to include. (at least in my opinion - others may want it) As noted in the subject, these are OPTIONAL dependencies for quanta so they are low on the manpower priority list, but they are certainly 'nice to have' and convey a bit of 'polish' when they are present. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Can we make Trinity ignore /usr/share/autostart?
by David C. Rankin 17 Feb '11

17 Feb '11

Tim, Robert, Serghei, all Is there a way to tell Trinity to ignore all the kde4 junk in /usr/share/autostart? (other than uninstalling kde4) I say this because I just took all my binary packages and installed them on a box with both a prior kde3 install (in /opt/kde) and a kde4 install (/usr/bin) and things were wild to say the least. I moved both existing ~/.kde and ~/.kde4 directories to ~/.kde-sav and ~/.kde4-sav before launching Trinity. (I forgot to delete the ksycoca from /var/tmp though and I suspect that caused 90% of the problem) Trinity started just fine and did the initial configuration. Then ksplash from the old kde3 install appeared. Then akonadi/nepomuk started trying to index everything, then the kde4 plasma-panel loaded over the Trinity kicker and all the window decorations were gone. I suspect Trinity was trying to pull the decorations from the old kde3 install due to the sysconfigcache in /var/tmp (I'll try deleting that next time), but the real issue is the kde4 autostart mess: [21:42 supersff:/usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions] # l /usr/share/autostart/ total 128 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 10 16:53 . drwxr-xr-x 408 root root 12288 Feb 15 11:49 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4417 Jan 27 08:47 kaddressbookmigrator.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3649 Jan 27 08:46 kalarm.autostart.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6539 Jan 18 15:24 kgpg.desktop -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 11509 Jan 19 16:04 klipper.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4196 Jan 19 16:23 kmix_autostart.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6638 Jan 19 16:03 konqy_preload.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5846 Jan 27 08:46 korgac.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2881 Jan 19 16:04 krunner.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13602 Jan 19 16:04 kwrited-autostart.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10584 Jan 19 16:04 nepomukserver.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3710 Jan 19 16:05 plasma-desktop.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 28 Jan 19 16:05 plasma.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 908 Dec 9 02:51 polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6000 Jan 18 15:24 printer-applet.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3506 Jan 19 16:23 restore_kmix_volumes.desktop In order to make Trinity play nicely with an existing kde4 install, can something be changed in the Trinity code to tell it to ignore all the kde4 autostart files? -- David C. Debian Squeeze repositories not accessible
by Thierry de Coulon 16 Feb '11

16 Feb '11

Hi! I've just upgraded my Debian Lenny install to Debian Squeeze (I used dist-upgrade). Trinity seems to run fine, but I tried to change sources.list to the repositories given for Squeeze: For Squeeze [STABLE] (4 lines): deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity/debian squeeze main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity/debian squeeze main deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps/debian squeeze main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps/debian squeeze main These (as well as the GPG Key address) only give timeouts. Server down, or deprecated info? If I had trinity 3.5.12 running on Lenny and it still runs on Squeeze, should I actually "update" at all? Thanks for information, Thierry

Trinity Running on Arch Linux!
by David C. Rankin 16 Feb '11

16 Feb '11

SOB, It works! After building kdebase (and fighting with other modules), I just decided to start trinity and see if it would work. Changed ~/.xinitrc to 'startkde' and then typed 'startx' and: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/trinity/ss/trinity-first-run.jpg http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/trinity/ss/trinity-running_01.jpg The only error I received was a "failed to load kio_slave", but given that there are still some unbuilt modules, that didn't surprise me. However, it is a bit concerning since kio is part of kdebase. Regardless - FANTASTIC! -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Mandriva files
by Robert Xu 16 Feb '11

16 Feb '11

Hi Tim Williams (mainly directed at him, but welcome for all to suggest), I have been at work merging your Mandriva spec files with my openSUSE and Fedora spec files, so that we can maintain from once central location all the RPMs for Trinity. I noticed that you didn't have a source rpm for kdebase, do you happen to have one (or a tarball with specs and patches or such)? This way, I can probably produce the final product by the end of the week. -- later, Robert Xu

Built gcc 4.3.4-3 -- howto change Trinity cmake files to use gcc 4.3.4 instead of gcc 4.5.2
by David C. Rankin 14 Feb '11

Tim, all, I have built gcc 4.3.4-3 to see if that fixes the iccconfig.cpp build failure in kdebase. What I don't know is: "How to I change the cmake call or CMakeLists.txt to make sure I'm using gcc 4.3 and not 5.4?" The executable is '/usr/bin/gcc-4.3'. Do I need a CC=gcc-4.3 or CXX=gcc-4.3 somewhere? If so where? I've never tried to build anything with alternate gcc's installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Add printer fails
by John A. Sullivan III 11 Feb '11

11 Feb '11

Hello, all. I have a pristine install of Squeeze with Trinity 3.5.12. I clicked on Settings / Peripherals / Printers to add a new printer. I entered Administration mode which asked me for my user password as it I was using sudo rather than the root password as if I was using su. I clicked on Add a printer. It took a very long time but eventually brought up the new printer wizard. I selected an TCP printer, entered the IP address, clicked next and was told: The executable /opt/kde3/bin/make_driver_db_cups could not be found in your PATH. Check that this program exists and is accessible in your PATH variable. Not surprising as I would suspect this is in /opt/trinity/bin. Is this something I am doing wrong or a bug? I created a symbolic link named /opt/kde3 for /opt/trinity. It did not eliminate the long waits but it did allow me to create the printer. Thanks - John

iccconfig - Makefile.am: noinst_HEADERS = iccconfig.h (is this right?)
by David C. Rankin 11 Feb '11

11 Feb '11

Serghei, Tim, all, Trying to debug the iccconfig.cpp error I'm having with kdebase, I've run across the following line in the ../iccconfig/Makefile.am: noinst_HEADERS = iccconfig.h According to http://www.gnu.org/software/hello/manual/automake/Headers.html <quote> Usually, only header files that accompany installed libraries need to be installed. Headers used by programs or convenience libraries are not installed. The noinst_HEADERS variable can be used for such headers. However when the header actually belongs to a single convenience library or program, we recommend listing it in the program's or library's _SOURCES variable (see Program Sources) instead of in noinst_HEADERS. This is clearer for the Makefile.am reader. noinst_HEADERS would be the right variable to use in a directory containing only headers and no associated library or program. </quote> What struck me is the line reading: "noinst_HEADERS would be the right variable to use in a directory containing only headers and no associated library or program." This isn't the case with iccconfig because you have the program iccconfig.cpp. Also, is it possible that I've run into a gcc compiler error? I'm working with the following: gcc 4.5.2-6 gcc-fortran 4.5.2-6 gcc-libs 4.5.2-6 gcc-objc 4.5.2-6 Thanks for any thoughts you may have. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

kdebase: kde-config: error while loading shared libraries: libkdecore.so.4 (file not found?)

Serghei, All: In my clean vbox environment, I have successfully (I think) built: qt3 pyqt3 tqtinterface arts kdelibs But now, I have a new kdebase error that kills the build at the very beginning. Clean Build Env. In Vbox - arts fails: libmcop.so.1 No such file or directory
by David C. Rankin 06 Feb '11

06 Feb '11

Hello list, To get around some of the strange kdebase build failures on Arch Linux, I create a fresh virtual machine in VirtualBox with a minimal install (X and fluxbox) to build Trinity in a clean build environment. Qt3 and tqtinterface build fine. We have run into an arts build failure where it won't use the shared library in its own directory. I have VirtualBox installed and could create another Arch Linux guest, or I could try and setup a chroot environment. I know how to do the virtual machine, but I'm interested in the chroot. (saves updating the guest install) I know how to chroot my OS, but I've never created a chroot to build packages. Would I just need to setup a fakeroot environment somewhere with: fakeroot /opt/qt /opt/trinity /home/trinity-svn (and what else??) I'm rather stumped.I would like to find a way to tell the kdebase build to NOT EVER-EVER look in /usr/include/QtCore. But so far I haven't found a way to do it. It is clear from the error above, that the qt4 qfile.h is causing the problem. The correct qfile.h is in /opt/qt/include, but for some reason isn't being used: 22:24 providence:~/arch/pkg/tbld/kdebase/kicker/libkicker> pmq -o /usr/include/QtCore/qfile.h /usr/include/QtCore/qfile.h is owned by qt 4.7.1-3 22:24 providence:~/arch/pkg/tbld/kdebase/kicker/libkicker> find /opt/qt/ -name qfile.h /opt/qt/include/qfile.h I try limiting that problem with PATH and kde environment tweaks: build() { msg "Setting PATH, CMAKE and Trinity Environment variables" [[ ${PATH%%:*} =~ /opt/qt/bin ]] || export PATH=/opt/qt/bin:$PATH export CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH=/opt/qt export CMAKE_INCLUDE_PATH=/opt/qt/include:/opt/qt/include/tqt export KDEDIR=/opt/trinity export KDEDIRS=/opt/trinity:/usr export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=:/opt/trinity/lib/pkgconfig:/opt/trinity/lib/pkgconfig:/opt/qt/lib/pkgconfig export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg:/opt/trinity/etc/xdg:/opt/trinity/etc/xdg export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/:/usr/local/share/:/opt/trinity/share:/opt/trinity/share trinity_prefix="/opt/trinity" cd ${srcdir} cmake ../ \ -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=${trinity_prefix} \ -DWITH_QT3=ON \ -DBUILD_ALL=ON \ -DCMAKE_SKIP_RPATH=ON make || return 1 } But even with these variables, the build grabs QtCore regardless. Well, We are making progress. kdebase built through 30% and then died with the following: [ 30%] Generating iccconfig_skel.cpp Scanning dependencies of target kcm_iccconfig-module [ 30%] Building CXX object kcontrol/iccconfig/CMakeFiles/kcm_iccconfig-module.dir/iccconfig.cpp.o /home/david/arch/pkg/tbld/kdebase/kcontrol/iccconfig/iccconfig.cpp: In member function ‘void KICCConfig::load(bool)’: /home/david/arch/pkg/tbld/kdebase/kcontrol/iccconfig/iccconfig.cpp:289:38: error: expected type-specifier /home/david/arch/pkg/tbld/kdebase/kcontrol/iccconfig/iccconfig.cpp:289:38: error: cannot convert ‘int*’ to ‘KRandrSimpleAPI*’ in initialization /home/david/arch/pkg/tbld/kdebase/kcontrol/iccconfig/iccconfig.cpp:289:38: error: expected ‘,’ or ‘;’ /home/david/arch/pkg/tbld/kdebase/kcontrol/iccconfig/iccconfig.cpp: In member function ‘virtual void KICCConfig::save()’: /home/david/arch/pkg/tbld/kdebase/kcontrol/iccconfig/iccconfig.cpp:359:37: error: expected type-specifier /home/david/arch/pkg/tbld/kdebase/kcontrol/iccconfig/iccconfig.cpp:359:37: error: cannot convert ‘int*’ to ‘KRandrSimpleAPI*’ in initialization /home/david/arch/pkg/tbld/kdebase/kcontrol/iccconfig/iccconfig.cpp:359:37: error: expected ‘,’ or ‘;’ make[2]: *** [kcontrol/iccconfig/CMakeFiles/kcm_iccconfig-module.dir/iccconfig.cpp.o] Error 1 make[1]: *** [kcontrol/iccconfig/CMakeFiles/kcm_iccconfig-module.dir/all] Error 2 make: *** [all] Error 2 Aborting... I have no idea what that means. (except it wanted a comma or semi-colon and didn't get it ;-) Progress on this box was ONLY possible because KDE4/Qt4 was NOT installed. On boxes where kde4/Qt4 is installed, the kdebase build fails here: [ 11%] Building CXX object kicker/libkicker/CMakeFiles/kickermain-shared.dir/kickerSettings.cpp.o In file included from /usr/include/QtCore/QFile:1:0, from /home/david/arch/pkg/trinity/kdebase/src/kicker/libkicker/kickerSettings.cpp:7: /usr/include/QtCore/qfile.h:53:1: error: ‘QT_BEGIN_HEADER’ does not name a type /usr/include/QtCore/qfile.h:62:27: error: expected initializer before ‘:’ token make[2]: *** [kicker/libkicker/CMakeFiles/kickermain-shared.dir/kickerSettings.cpp.o] Error 1 make[1]: *** [kicker/libkicker/CMakeFiles/kickermain-shared.dir/all] Error 2 make: *** [all] Error 2 Aborting... So how do I tell the build to ignore /usr/include/QtCore? Is this something that needs fixing in the code? I have tried to tell cmake to only use /opt and I have set my path accordingly: build() { msg "Setting PATH, CMAKE and Trinity Environment variables" [[ ${PATH%%:*} =~ /opt/qt/bin ]] || export PATH=/opt/qt/bin:$PATH export CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH=/opt/qt export CMAKE_INCLUDE_PATH=/opt/qt/include:/opt/qt/include/tqt export KDEDIR=/opt/trinity export KDEDIRS=/opt/trinity:/usr export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=:/opt/trinity/lib/pkgconfig:/opt/trinity/lib/pkgconfig:/opt/qt/lib/pkgconfig export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg:/opt/trinity/etc/xdg:/opt/trinity/etc/xdg export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/:/usr/local/share/:/opt/trinity/share:/opt/trinity/share msg "Configuring autotools and Creating Makefile.common" cd ${startdir} cp -Rp /usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4 admin/libtool.m4.in cp -Rp /usr/share/libtool/config/ltmain.sh admin/ltmain.sh make -f admin/Makefile.common # set --enable-closure configure option if needed (needed for kdebase) trinity_prefix="/opt/trinity" ./configure --prefix=${trinity_prefix} \ --includedir=${trinity_prefix}/include/kde \ --mandir=${trinity_prefix}/share/man \ --infodir=${trinity_prefix}/share/info \ --with-extra-libs=${trinity_prefix}/lib \ --sysconfdir=/etc \ --localstatedir=/var \ --libexecdir=${trinity_prefix}/lib/kdebase-kde3 \ --disable-rpath \ --with-xinerama \ --with-qt-dir=/opt/qt \ --with-qt-includes=/opt/qt/include \ --with-qt-libraries=/opt/qt/lib \ --with-extra-includes=/opt/qt/include/tqt \ --enable-closure cd ${srcdir} cmake ../ \ -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=${trinity_prefix} \ -DWITH_QT3=ON \ -DBUILD_ALL=ON \ -DCMAKE_SKIP_RPATH=ON make || return 1 } So I'm not sure what to do to keep the build from looking at Qt4. I have several boxes to build on. The current box I'm using (the one that made it to 30%) is an i686 with only kde3, gnome, and fluxbox on it. I was still getting cmake messages like: /opt/trinity/lib/kde3/plugins/designer/kdewidgets.so: Feature KWritePermsIcon already defined in /opt/kde/lib/kde3/plugins/designer/kdewidgets.so! so I have removed kde3 from the box completely and I'm starting over. Any thoughts welcome. Let me know if I need to file something on the iccconfig.cpp issue. Thanks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

by David C. Rankin 03 Feb '11

03 Feb '11

I've started a new thread, since this is now a 'make' problem instead of a configure problem. It also looks like this might be an x86_64 issue because I am currently building kdebase on i686 with the *exact* same build scripts and it seems to be working fine. (well until it bombed later -- see at end) Here is the background from the prior thread: >> ==> Packaging - trinity-kdebase-1218548 >> >> make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop. >> >> Aborting... >> >> >> >> Looking at the Makefile generated in the out-of-source dir, it does NOT >> >> contain any install: target. I'll try >> >> calling make -f ../Makefile and see if that works. > > > > add "-DBUILD_ALL=ON" to cmake arguments <snip> Hmm... I updated the cmake command to: cmake ../ \ -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=${trinity_prefix} \ -DWITH_QT3=ON \ -DBUILD_ALL=ON \ -DCMAKE_SKIP_RPATH=ON make || return 1 I still get the error: config.status: executing libtool commands Good - your configure finished. Upgrade stable -> testing -- with errors
by Brad Alexander 03 Feb '11

03 Feb '11

I may have just shot myself in the foot, but I decided to go ahead and upgrade my wife's machine. It was running stable (lenny atm) and I wanted to get it to testing. Its running trinity as well. So I updated the apt-conf to APT::Default-Release "testing"; (My base sources.list includes links for all three releases), updated the trinity list from the lenny one to the squeeze one (the ppa format), and I ran aptitude update; aptitude full-upgrade. Things went well for about 30 minutes, then crashed. Now I am getting [root@galaxy archives]# dpkg --configure -a Setting up menu (2.1.41) ... update-menus: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: undefined symbol: _ZNSt8messagesIcE2idE, version GLIBCXX_3.4 dpkg: error processing menu (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 127 Setting up python2.6 (2.6.6-8+b1) ... update-menus: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: undefined symbol: _ZNSt8messagesIcE2idE, version GLIBCXX_3.4 dpkg: error processing python2.6 (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 127 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libpython2.6: libpython2.6 depends on python2.6 (= 2.6.6-8+b1); however: Package python2.6 is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing libpython2.6 (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: menu python2.6 libpython2.6 and I can't get past the undefined symbol. Can anyone suggest what I need to get this done? Especially since I didn't warn my wife what I was doing? Thanks, --b

kdelibs OK, kdebase ./configure fails - attempting to compile Trinity without the Trinity Qt Interface
by David C. Rankin 02 Feb '11

02 Feb '11

Hmm... I'm beginning to suspect that I have tqtinterface installed in the wrong place. I build tqtinterface with: cmake ../ \ -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr \ -DWITH_QT3=ON \ -DCMAKE_SKIP_RPATH=ON || return 1 And I have built arts and kdelibs with: cmake ../ \ -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/opt/trinity \ -DWITH_QT3=ON \ -DCMAKE_SKIP_RPATH=ON make kdelibs built OK, but both kdebase and kdebindings (not needed I know) fail during ./configure with: checking for uic-tqt... /usr/bin/uic-tqt checking whether uic supports -L ... yes checking whether uic supports -nounload ... yes checking if TQt is available... no configure: WARNING: You are attempting to compile Trinity without the Trinity Qt Interface installed. Please install libtqtinterface-dev and try again! checking if Qt needs -ljpeg... no checking for rpath... no checking for KDE... libraries /opt/trinity/lib, headers /opt/trinity/include checking if UIC has KDE plugins available... no configure: error: you need to install kdelibs first. I do have kde4 on this box with qt 4.7.1-3 which installs to /usr, so I then tried the following configure options with kdebase: --with-qt-dir=/usr/bin \ --with-qt-includes=/usr/include/tqt \ --with-qt-libraries=/usr/lib \ Which caused the following ./configure error: checking for libjpeg... -ljpeg checking for perl... /usr/bin/perl checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.3 and < 4.0) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation! For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support! Hmm... again... Looking where qt-mt got installed, I find: 2:52 providence:~/arch/pkg/trinity/dependencies/tqtinterface> find /opt/qt/ -name "*qt-mt*" /opt/qt/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 /opt/qt/lib/pkgconfig/qt-mt.pc /opt/qt/lib/libqt-mt.so /opt/qt/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3.8 /opt/qt/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3 /opt/qt/lib/libqt-mt.prl which are the new qt3-3.3.8c libraries. I then rebuilt tqtinterface to go in /opt/qt. But then remaking arts failed not finding Qt again. Grrr.... I then rebuilt tqtinterface with PREFIX=/usr. But now when I'm back to square one and kdebase, ./configure fails... So, what's the solution? Should I remake tqtinterface with -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/opt/qt and then try adjusting the --with-qt... options for all remaining packages? Is there an environment variable trick I can try? What say the experts? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

kdebase option --with-pam (use it?)
by David C. Rankin 02 Feb '11

02 Feb '11

All, What is the current thinking of compiling kdebase '--with-pam'? The README lists the option: `--with-pam[=ARG]' enable support for PAM: ARG=[yes|no|service name] According to the README, the --with designation implies that it is OFF by default. Is this functionality desired in trinity? I ask, because I don't know whether it is enabled on my current kde3 install, but if it is useful, I want it :) What say the gurus? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

arts build - uic-tqt ... not found (I've packaged and installed tqtinterface, but uic-tqt got missed?)
by David C. Rankin 02 Feb '11

02 Feb '11

All, I have built and installed tqtinterface on Arch and I'm attempting to build arts and I receive the following error: <snip> checking for Qt... libraries /opt/qt/lib, headers /opt/qt/include using -mt checking for moc... /opt/qt/bin/moc checking for uic-tqt... not found configure: WARNING: No Qt ui compiler (uic) found! Please check whether you installed Qt correctly. You need to have a running uic binary. configure tried to run and the test didn't succeed. If configure shouldn't have tried this one, set the environment variable UIC to the right one before running configure. Looking at my tqtinterface build directory, I find: 22:27 archangel:~/arch/pkg/trinity-notes/tqtest> find . -name "uic*" ./src/qtinterface/.svn/text-base/uic-tqt.svn-base ./src/qtinterface/.svn/prop-base/uic-tqt.svn-base ./src/qtinterface/uic-tqt so uic-tqt got built, but apparently was not included by 'make install' into the Arch package I created. The tqtinterface package installed as follows: 22:15 archangel:~/arch/pkg/trinity-notes/arts> pacman -Ql tqtinterface tqtinterface /usr/ tqtinterface /usr/bin/ tqtinterface /usr/bin/convert_qt_tqt1 tqtinterface /usr/bin/convert_qt_tqt2 tqtinterface /usr/bin/convert_qt_tqt3 tqtinterface /usr/bin/dcopidl-tqt tqtinterface /usr/bin/dcopidl2cpp-tqt tqtinterface /usr/bin/dcopidlng-tqt tqtinterface /usr/bin/mcopidl-tqt tqtinterface /usr/bin/moc-tqt tqtinterface /usr/bin/tmoc tqtinterface /usr/bin/tqt-replace tqtinterface /usr/bin/tqt-replace-stream tqtinterface /usr/include/ tqtinterface /usr/include/tqt/ tqtinterface /usr/include/tqt/Qt/ tqtinterface /usr/include/tqt/Qt/q3cstring.h <snip> but no uic-tqt interface. So it looks like this is a file I will need to manually tell the Arch makepkg app to include in the package. Easy enough to do, but: "Where is 'uic-tqt' supposed to get installed to?" Which directory does it go in? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

./configure kdebindings - checking if UIC has KDE plugins available... no?
by David C. Rankin 02 Feb '11

02 Feb '11

All, After what appeared to be a successful build and install of kdelibs, I moved on to configure kdebindings (I remembered --enable-closure). If you did install kdelibs, then the Qt version that is picked up by this configure is not the same version you used to compile kdelibs. The Qt Plugin installed by kdelibs is *ONLY* loadable if it is the _same Qt version_, compiled with the _same compiler_ and the same Qt configuration settings. Aborting... Huh? I did install kdelibs, and I didn't do anything (that I know of) to have it use some other Qt, so I'm a bit stumped. I did install kdelibs as trinity-kdelibs (if that matters - I'll check the provides() line), but the package is installed: 00:33 archangel:/dat_e/david/bld/trinity/kdelibs/pkg> pacman -Q trinity-kdelibs trinity-kdelibs 1218332-1.0 The full file list for the package is here: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/trinity/filelists/kdelibs-filelist.txt Any idea of what file isn't being located when UIC is checking for KDE plugins? At least that way I can look and see if I have what it needs. Thanks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

arts configure - attempting to compile Trinity without the Trinity Qt Interface installed? Warning OK?
by David C. Rankin 01 Feb '11

01 Feb '11

I thought I had this sorted, but alas no... The arts ./configure is failing to find TQt and issuing the following warning: <snip> checking for Qt... libraries /opt/qt/lib, headers /opt/qt/include using -mt checking for moc... /opt/qt/bin/moc checking for uic-tqt... The configure completes successfully, but I'm concerned about the warning. Looking at 'configure' itself, it seems to adjust for this with: if ${kde_cv_tqt+:} false; then : $as_echo_n "(cached) " >&6 else <do other stuff> So is this Warning OK? Obviously, Trinity isn't installed yet, so I suspect that is producing the warning, but I want to check to make sure there isn't something I need to fix before proceeding. cmake completes fine on arts :) -- David C. Unable to build a working kaffeine against xinelib-1.2 on Maverick
by Dexter Filmore 30 Jan '11

30 Jan '11

Ubuntu 10.10+Trinity xine 1.2 from hg/debian site. Worked fine in 9.10. xine-ui as well from there. Compiled and xine-ui plays h264 on vdpau+pulse just fine. compiled kaffeine: a) src from trinity b) vanilla 0.8.8 --without-xcb. As soon as I enable vdpau it crashes. No matter what I set for sound, alsa, pulse, none. Since xine-ui works a charm (and mplayer, too for that matter) I suspect something in the kde build environment to be fishy. (Possibly that wrong qt package? Is maybe the entire 3.5.12 build hosed?) Appreciate pointers. Icedove and mime-types
by John A. Sullivan III 28 Jan '11

28 Jan '11

I'm feeling really stupid. I have an installation of Trinity on Squeeze where the user uses Icedove for email. For some reason, it wants to open PDF files in GIMP. I see the same thing in other Gnome applications like Evolution. I've gone to Icedove preferences and tried to change the application type and clicking on other . . . does not produce a dialog box to select an application (like KPDF or acroread). I installed kgtk-config-icedove but that did not help. I even installed Nautilus and tried setting the application association there. That at least presented KPDF as an option in Evolution but not in Icedove. I installed gconf-editor but that does not seem to address application associations. Short of finding which defaults.list file it is looking at and manually editing it or manually setting it in mimetypes.rdf, how does one set this in a Trinity only environment (in that Gnome desktop is not installed)? Thanks - John

Trinity svn build order question - can you build deps on old kde3, then rebuild as you go?

Howto build pykde after removed or prior kde3 install?
by David C. Rankin 26 Jan '11

26 Jan '11

Guys, How do I get pykde to use the right dcopobject.h from trinity svn in order to successfully build it after removing my prior kde3 install? I ask because I read that you MUST remove prior KDE3 installs before building trinity. I did that. I also patch qt3 for 3.3.8c and I have it installed. However when you run 'python configure.py' it grabs the kde4 install information: gcc version 4.5.2 concatenating files KDE base directory is /usr KDE include directory is /usr/include KDE lib directory is /usr/lib lib directory is lib <snip> and then fails during make because it can't find the right dcopobject.h: <snip> Creating top level Makefile... I can't just add something like: -I /home/david/arch/pkg/trinity/kdelibs/dcop to the dcop Makefile because it then fails to find tqobject.h and so on. So I need a push in the right direction. Anybody have a reference, a link, or some notes squirreled away that would help cure my ignorance here? Any help would be greatly appreciated. List of bugs/requests
by Luciano ES 26 Jan '11

26 Jan '11

I've been thinking about submitting a few bug reports and feature requests. I am posting the list here, in case someone would like to comment... 1) Kinfocenter launches empty. None of the components is available. I found a workaround: right-click the KDE task bar and add the "Settings" applet. All the functions are there. 2) I request installation of kdepim-kde3 and Adept Manager tells me it is going to BREAK something. Should I proceed? Is that safe? 3) My old configuration of Yakuake is no longer usable because many keyboard shortcuts don't work anymore. For example, Shift+Ctrl+c, Shift+Ctrl+v, Ctrl+/, Alt+c/Alt+s inside Vim etc. (Hmm... the Vim shortcuts don't work on Konsole either. I will have to investigate that further.) 4) KDE 3 has had a bug with key shortcuts for years: in the config app, Regional & Accessibility, Keyboard Shortcuts, we can change some of the global shortcuts. I like this: copy with Ctrl+c and Ctrl+Ins, paste with Ctrl+v and Shift+Ins, Undo with Ctrl+z and Redo with Ctrl+y. The problem is Ctrl+Ins, Shift+Ins, and Ctrl+y do not work everywhere. In Kmail, for example, Ctrl+y does not work. Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v did not use to work, they do now. But Ctrl+Ins and Shift+Ins still don't work in a few places, especially small dialogues. 5) This has bothered me for ages: in Konqueror, I REALLY, REALLY wish I could highlight files, COPY them (say, Ctrl+c) and PASTE them into another Konqueror window or panel (Ctrl+v perhaps?). I used to do that a lot in Windows Explorer. I migrated to Linux in 2006 and I still miss that feature... 6) I also love how I can press Ctrl+(NumPad +) to "adjust" the width of all file manager columns. Try doing that in a Windows machine. It's great! Can we have that in Konqueror too? Pleeeease?... 7) I may be the only one in the world who has or notices this problem: I use a netbook that I can carry around, but I use an external keyboard when I'm at home. The netbook has a US International keyboard, the keyboard at home is Brazilian, ABNT2. Whenever I plug/unplug the keyboard and switch layouts, I lose my Repeat Delay/Rate configuration, so the keyboard feels a little bit slow. So I have to open Kcontrol, readjust the delay and click OK. The number never seems to have changed, but the keyboard definitely feels different. Redoing the config fixes it, but it's annoying. I also have to do that ritual every time I boot/reboot/log out. I wish KDE would keep those settings. -- Luciano ES >>

Clarification announcement!
by Robert Xu 26 Jan '11

26 Jan '11

Hi all. This is a post to clear up any issues that people might be confused with. We've all agreed to this, so this is now here for reference. So, let me start of by saying: TRINITY IS NOT KDE3 (anymore). KDE3 IS DEAD. And let me go a bit further with that. We are currently in an alpha stage of porting Trinity to cmake. There is currently the following in usable or finished states: - tqtinterface - arts - kdelibs - kdebase - kdedevelop The 3.5.12 tarballs DO NOT have them. I repeat, DO NOT have cmake scripts. You will need to download them from http://thel.ro/ and insert them into the build directory. We are also in a pre-alpha stage of porting Trinity to Qt4. Before I go any further, let me say: WE ARE NOT PORTING APPLICATIONS ONE BY ONE TO QT4 (as may have been interpreted before). What we are doing is porting the apps to tqt (a relatively easy thing to do), and then letting tQT handle the Qt version specifics. tQt for Qt4 has been progressing along for some time, although it is COMPLETELY FAR from stable. If you'd like to see a screenshot from 3.5.13, Tim provides one here: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=1586qmp&s=7 I assure you, we are not making another KDE4. We'll leave that junk to the KDE4 developers. Thank you for taking the time to read this. The Trinity Developers

Success with Trinity on Slackware 13.1
by Jay 26 Jan '11

26 Jan '11

I've managed to get Trinity running nicely on Slackware 13.1. To be more precise it is a linux live derivative of slackware (similar to slax). Everything runs nicely and i have only one question. On the root account i get the error 'cannot start kstartupconfig` after logging on and just before the desktop loads. I can click ok and move to the desktop no problem. I imagine it is a permissions thing with the home/root directory but nothing i've tried fixes the error. For testing i boot from an iso. Before creating the iso i have chowned the folder and also tried chmod 755. Can anyone point me in the right direction to remedy this. I am sure it is a simple permission problem but it eludes me so far. Jay

I did have a Utilities menu, but I had trouble figuring out what should go in there. What constituted "system" and "utility" apps (or tools perhaps?). I do the same thing (reorganizing the kmenu), and its something I noticed my users doing as well. When 108 different people start fiddling about with kmenu I asked why. The usual answers were, "its out of order", "nothing is where its supposed to be", or "it doesn't make sense the way it is. They all thought it was a defect like the kind they experienced when using windows (adding an item to the startmenu throws everything off). When I asked them for a mockup of what they thought it should be like, what made sense to them, I got the basic of what we have here. Looking at SuSe, it seems they did a similar study or someting. I think we need to focus first on the parent directories (Office or Desktop Publishing, Tools, Utilities, etc etc) then work on the subdirectories. I think the apps should help us determine what subdirectories are needed. I urge the use of proper computer terminology, avoiding the use of "MS Terms". We should mean to education as well, after all knowledge is freedom (among other good things). With regard to "mytools", it smacks too much as a homage to MS, with its "My this" and "My that", but in the end its not my decision. Its clearly something Trinity as a whole must make. I do urge against the use of MS terminology. I understand the belief that if its familiar, it will make the use more comfortable. That, however, has not been my eXPerience :). Users who leave windows for Linux cringe when they see references to it. They're finally free of their master, why would they wish to build a shrine to it? The use of MS terms, also reinforces the belief that Linux is just a second rate Windos wannabe. OH BLAST! Where did this soapbox come from??!! Kate

The Kmenu Saga Vol 00
by Katheryne Draven 25 Jan '11

25 Jan '11

Wow. A lot to read so I'm start a new thread sort of. Everyone makes valid points for the most part. What we need to find, is which ones apply to us. Who are we recreating this late-great desktop environment (DE) for? I suggest, for now, its for the loyal kde3 users. For true and current gnu-linux users. I am not, in any sense, discounting those who will come, but they will come because of what we build now. So let's make it a good one (DE). Its illogical to design something for someone isn't currently using it. It is logical to design something for those who are. So I suggest we focus on them. David C. Rankin wrote "I agree with just "Documents". If you don't know who's documents are on your box, you have more issues to worry about :p" - Well David (if it was you who wrote this) I can see you and I are existentialists. I can't agree more. We cannot cater to those who cannot/will not learn or simple use their mind. Think about it this way, can you create a DE for someone who doesn't want to use your DE? David was also labouring to find something better than Office, that's a hard one. Productivity, DTP, this one is going to be a killer. However putting graphics under media, I disagree with because, whilst they overlap to a degree, media or multimedia has traditionally been the domain of Audio Video. John A. Sullivan III wrote "People have businesses to run and could care less about educating themselves (rightfully)." - I've never met a successful business person who didn't what to know how it all works, considering its how money is made. I have business client, all of which have wanted to see what's under the hood. Once again, We cannot cater to those who cannot/will not learn or simple use their mind. Its simply impossible to crater to those who do not think. Think about it, how can you build something for someone that doesn't care? A person like this, is never happy. Oliver Kullmann wrote "I think the KDE 3 -> KDE 4 disaster has much to do with a kind of take-over by ms-centric thinking. Sure, hard to quantify, but with KDE 3 I always had the feeling it moves in principle into the right direction, while with KDE 4 this basic trust is completely lost (on a daily basic --- I have to use it under various circumstances)." - I agree. Currently kde4 seems to be in competition with MS, who oddly enough has stolen things from kde (check out their open/save dialog which now has a kde like side bar). Competition is a waste of time, let's just focus on doing a good job. John A. Sullivan III "I would like to politely disagree while admitting that many others on the list may be better qualified than I to address this issue. However, my impression of why KDE4 has been such a problem has not been the MS imitation but their prioritization of developer interests over user interests" - Its true, they are in compentition with MS, and its true, they are serving their interests over those of the users. I have dealt directly with KDE4 devels over the last year until I just couldn't anymore. David C. Rankin - Your suggests are right on track and have given me much to think about. Poor, overworked Tim wrote "Well, I do want to convey to the user that the Documents folder is unique to his or her profile, unlike the other shortcuts which point to shared system resources that are identical across all profiles. Personally I like "My Documents", but other alternatives could be "Personal Documents", "Personal Files" or similar. - Isn't it possible to create a script that would read the user's login name and create a direct such as "Tim's User File" which would contain everything in its own net subdirectories (Documents, Spreedsheets, Homework (for those still in skool), Photos etc). My people just a directory called User-Files, or rename it later on. I also, whole-heartedly, agree with Lisi in that if a language is to be used, such as English, then it should be used correctly. The same should go for computer terms. Felix Miata wrote "Try a librarian hat and think about cataloging, file drawers and shelving. Does that help?" - yes it does help and its what I've been trying to do. I apoligize for the length of the email but I thougt it wise to start a new one, than add to the already lengthy one. I've always believed order comes from chaos, so I think we are making progress. Kate

Usage: kdesudo [-u <runas>] <command> KdeSudo will now exit... Anybody else been experiencing this? Not a problem to me, I haven't noticed lack or malfunctioning of anything. I don't think I ever use this KdeSudo thing, though. I just got the error then tried running Kuser as root (Run Command > Options > Run as a different user > root), and it worked. compiling kdebase multiple errors
by Jay 22 Jan '11

22 Jan '11

I am compiling kde-3.5.12 in a slackware 13 environment with no previous KDE. I have installed everything with --prefix=/usr including qt3, tqtinterface, arts & kdelibs After patching qt3 i have compiled tqtinterface, arts and kdelibs without error however compiling kdebase gives multiple errors. The file index.cache.bz2 is missing for all folders in doc. Instead of just creating the file (touch index.cache.bz2) i removed all directories in kdebase/doc (won't need them anyway) and that got me through. The next error was shutdowndlg.cpp:83:39: error: cannot call constructor 'QImage::QImage' directly shutdowndlg.cpp:83:39: error: for a function-style cast, remove the redundant '::QImage' Removing the ::QImage from the function allowed compilation to continue. krandrbindings.cpp:31:2: error: cannot call constructor 'KShortcut::KShortcut' directly krandrbindings.cpp:31:2: error: for a function-style cast, remove the redundant '::KShortcut' Again removing the direct call allowed me to continue. The next one is where i am stuck and not sure how to proceed. iccconfig.cpp:148:6: warning: unused variable 'i' iccconfig.cpp:149:12: warning: unused variable 'iccFileArrayNew' I tried removing the unused variables but i get a slew of these errors with the randr section. So far i have downgraded make, autoconf and automake to slack 12.2 versions and they have worked ok up until now. I am also not using the -j switch during compilation depsite using quad core processor. Can anyone advise what i may be missing or what i have done wrong? Kind Regards, Jay

Debian upgrade
by Brad Alexander 22 Jan '11

22 Jan '11

Since my wife prefers kde3 to kde4, I have kept lenny on her machine. Fortunately, with the upgrade to squeeze imminent, I found trinity. The install in lenny was smooth, but then I changed my apt.conf to point to testing and changed the trinity.list to point to , and if I do an apt-get dist-upgrade, it wants to deinstall all of trinity. aptitude full-upgrade spits out pages and pages of dependency problems, things which I would think would be upgraded in a dist- (or full-) upgrade. What is the proper path to upgrading a Debian box with trinity installed? I would like to get at least to testing, but would really prefer getting to sid, if trinity from squeeze will run there. Thanks, --b

uic-tqt when compiling arts
by Jay 22 Jan '11

22 Jan '11

I am compiling in slackware 13.1 with no KDE. I have compiled the following successfully: qt-3.3.b qca-1 qca-tls poppler dbus-qt3 dbus-python tqtinterface-3.5.12 compiles without error. Compiling arts-3.5.12 stops at a 'not found' error for uic-tqt I linked uic-tqt to uic and it now stops at: /opt/kde3/lib/qt3/bin/moc ./qiomanager_p.h qiomanager_p.moc Qt meta object compiler moc: Too many input files specified I also saw it looking for moc-tqt which was not found. I thought moc-tqt was for qt4. How can i get passed the above error? Jay

Getting Started - HowToBuild - need a bit of help.
by David C. Rankin 21 Jan '11

21 Jan '11

Tim, all, As expressed in my email to Tim, my goal is to build trinity (from svn) for Arch Linux to replace the old Chakra project kdemod3. (which is no longer supported or available) I'm very proficient in Linux, but I SUCK with cmake. It might as well be Greek. I've been through: http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/wiki/bin/view/Developers/HowToBuild and I've stumbled across the linuxquestions.org thread stating you must remove all existing kde3 installs before building trinity. (Tim this seems to answer my question whether I can do a parallel install of trinity in /opt/trinity and keep my existing /opt/kde) So do I really have to nuke my existing kde3 install prior to building trinity? (assuming yes from the following link) http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/trinity-kde-3-5-12-a-8… This is where I hit my first roadblock. (Issue #1) Arch Linux provides python2-sip and pyqt3, but not pykde. I've downloaded and written an Arch PKGBUILD script to build the PyKDE-3.16.7 package for Arch. (see: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=881478#p881478) However building pykde requires dcopobject.h. Trinity provides: trinity/kdebindings/dcopc/dcopobject.h trinity/kdelibs/dcop/dcopobject.h (of which the kdelibs dcopobject.h looks correct) However, to build pykde, I have to provide reference to the installed kde3 base (-k /opt/kde) to get it to build: python2 configure.py \ -d /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages \ -v /usr/share/sip -k /opt/kde which builds fine, but the linuxquestion.org thread says if you build against the existing 3.5.10 dcopobject.h you will have build failures later on. So what's the trick to get pykde to compile using the dcopobject.h from svn? (Issue #2) How in the heck to I choose QT3 to get tqtinterface to build? I know this is a simple switch issue or environment issue, but I've googled and have just managed to broaden my confusion. This is my cmake shortcoming. When I attempt the build, I get: 11:49 archangel:/tmp/dependencies/tqtinterface> cmake ./ CMake Error at cmake/modules/TDEMacros.cmake:20 (message): ################################################# You must select a Qt version ################################################# Call Stack (most recent call first): CMakeLists.txt:46 (tde_message_fatal) -- Configuring incomplete, errors occurred! The error is obvious, I need to tell it which Qt version to use, but obviously I'm too stupid to figure out where or how. Can somebody help a brother out here and help lift the veil of confusion I'm suffering from here? Also, I've started a build script to automate the trinity build after I get the dependencies built. Basically to automate the libtool.m4.in, ltmain.sh and make -f setup and then provide correct ./configure options that --enable-closure when required based on the module name. The the plan is simply to build trinity in the order specified in the HowToBuild from a static list or array. Before I reinvent the wheel, does anything like this exist? Also, the wiki is a bit sparse. If anyone has more detailed notes squirreled away on the build process or how to setup a better build environment/chroot/whatever, if you will make that information available, I'll commit to adding it to the wiki (with proper attribution of course) For anyone interested, I have started the build script and have it functional up to the point of adding the ordered list to build each module. (currently it is just a concept that outputs what it will do without actually doing anything). Basic use is: sh bldtrinity.sh [ path/to/your/trinitysvn path/to/libtool.m4 path/to/ltmain.sh ] my defaults [Arch locations]: trindir=${1:-/home/david/arch/pkg/trinity} syslibtool=${2:-/usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4} sysltmain=${3:-/usr/share/libtool/config/ltmain.sh} The beginnings of the script are at: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/trinity/scr/bldtrinity.sh I welcome any suggestions or comments. Thanks. I look forward to this project. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Build Environment
by Jay 17 Jan '11

17 Jan '11

I am using Slackware 13.1 and wondering if anyone has had success compiling trinity in this environment. I have used a chroot environment with no KDE installed at all and also a stripped Slackware (slax) with no KDE and qt3. If using the svn and build scripts i get 'no uic-tqt' errors all the time and nothing gets compiled. If compiling manually i get as far as compiling tqtinterface, arts & kdelibs. I am having no luck compiling kdebase though. So my question is if anyone has had success compiling under slackware 13+ please let me know the best way to compile.

Trinity Usage Poll
by Timothy Pearson 17 Jan '11

17 Jan '11

All, The Trinity Desktop Environment development team is attempting to find out which distributions and version Trinity is currently installed and used on, so that we may focus our efforts on improving compatibility with those distributions. We politely ask that you add your distribution to the informal poll on the Wiki here: http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/wiki/bin/view/Community/UsageSurvey2011 If your distribution is already listed, please increment the number of users for that distribution by one (1). If more than one individual in your household is using that distribution, please increment the number of users by the number of users in your household. Also, if you use more than one distribution, please increment the number of users appropriately for each distribution in use. The results of this poll will also help the Trinity development team decide which distributions are too old or little-used to be supported in future Trinity release, so please cast your vote if you want to see your distribution supported in the future. Thank you, Timothy Pearson Trinity Desktop Environment Development Team

I have spent some time developing a Squeeze live-cd with Trinity. Why? Because there is nothing out there in the mainstream that I like and I have seen no Squeeze/Trinity live-cd elsewhere yet. It is named Exe Linux as I live beside the Exe Estuary in Devon, England. It might be a good starting point or demonstration for anyone who is interested but is unsure of running Trinity on Squeeze. The result has (to the best of my knowledge) strictly GPL software. Some custom themes, configurations and scripts are included but are debianized, i.e. they can be removed/replaced by apt (for example extra live-config scripts to support Trinity autologin and locale/language) and should not conflict with Squeeze core system components The live cd has an optional integrated installer (hacked remastersys) for HD and a custom CLI script for USB persistent pendrive. It is built "from scratch" using custom scripts, debbootstrap and GNU tools (not live-helper nor remastersys) and is not a "remaster" of anything else. The build scripts are included in the live-cd but are experimental and, misused, could trash a running system. If you want to try a remaster better use remastersys (and please don't request support from remastersys forums because a hacked version is used). Three locales/languages are built-in (US, GB and ES) No more fit the CD without removing one. If there is any interest I would like to make this available to Trinity users, perhaps later in the "community downloads" section. In the meantime the current ISO (685MB) is available here (can paste this in a terminal): wget -c "http://exe-linux.fastfishwebsolutions.com/trinity/exelinux_squeeze_trinity_…" md5sum: wget -c "http://exe-linux.fastfishwebsolutions.com/trinity/md5sum_exelinux_squeeze_t…" Disclaimer: This is *not* an official Trinity project. There are probably some bugs. There is some scrappy and probably out-of-date documentation. Use at your own risk.

Not that I know of. > - Are there original KDE3 developpers involved in Trinity development? > If so, I'd really like to know if they do it because KDE4 broke too much things (and/or they consider a desktop environment should not break things this way)? Only incidentally, in that I pull updates from the kdepim Enterprise branch, which is still maintained by an original KDE3 developer/development team. > - What are the long term perspectives about Trinity? > Will Trinity become something different than KDE3 or it keep it as > close as possible? As close as possible in terms of look and feel, but new features will still be added where they would improve the functionality of the desktop environment (e.g. krandrtray). Users can always disable new features from the control panel, as providing that option is a requirement for patch submission. > I mean, the move from KDE3 to KDE4 changed & broke a lots of things > that I used to work with since 2004. I'd really like a desktop > environment that doesn't change too much, that keeps its basis stable (eg. themes can evolve, apps be improved, but keep it functionally the same!). > By the end, I really think it's a matter of "respect for users": if one changes things like KDE4 did, what do we have to think about respect they have (or don't have) for their users? OK KDE4 is beautiful, etc. but it's deaply another desktop environment (also deeply slow in some particular configurations such as konsole/nvidia ships), so why should I continue to use KDE desktops? I almost think KDE4 should have change its name to something else OR... KDE3 should have been officially > maintained... or Trinity officially endorsed (is that the case?)! KDE won't change its name, but KDE3 has changed its name to Trinity. So, KDE3 == Trinity, KDE == KDE4, but KDE3 != KDE4. > So, what's going on? > Thank you, > Nicolas > PS: Do you have an idea about the approximate number of Trinity users? It seems this list is always growing... Not sure! I know we had 3000+ downloads of the Maverick Desktop LiveCD from one mirror alone last month, but the actual user number may be much higher. Hope this helps! Tim

Reversal of shortcuts?
by Luciano ES 15 Jan '11

15 Jan '11

So, I upgraded my old Ubuntu box to Maverick recently, with Trinity, of course. God bless. But not without a few incidents. Some of the old settings were lost, especially in Kmail. And I noticed an annoying change in the shortcuts. I have many mailboxes: private, work, another work, Gmail etc. When I created them, I was required to name each one of them. So I put numbers in the names: 1 - Work 2 - Private 3 - Another work 4 - Gmail etc. Opening the File menu in Kmail, the item "Check Mail In >" had the letter C underlined, so I developed the habit of pressing Alt+f, c to open the "Check Mail In >" submenu with all my mail accounts. Then I would press the number of the account I wanted to check: Alt+f, c, 1 for "1 - Work". Fine. Could be better, but anyway... That is a lot worse now. The new Kmail still has "Check Mail In >" but now it underlines the letter I. Which is bad, because "Import Messages..." also has the letter I underlined. So, instead of pressing Alt+f, c, now I am supposed to press Alt+f, i, and because the letter i matches two items in that menu, that mail account submenu does not open automatically anymore. Pressing i over and over swaps the selection from "Import Messages..." to "Check Mail In >" then back to "Import Messages..." ad infinitum. None will be selected automatically, I have to press Enter. So my procedure now is: Alt+f, i, i, Enter. Annoying. Even worse, now pressing the account number (first character of the account name) doesn't work anymore. In other words, pressing Alt+f, i, i, Enter, 1 does not check the "1 - Work" account. I have to go another Enter... Summing up: from <Alt+f, c, 1> I had to go to <Alt+f, i, i, Enter, Enter> and that's just for the first item of the submenu. For the 5th item, it's <Alt+f, i, i, Enter, down, down, down, down, Enter>. Grrrrr... Can we go back to the old arrangement? Please? Is it the proper place for that discussion or should I take it to the official KDE team? I suppose they only care about KDE 4 now, and they probably *prefer* the current, more cumbersome arrangement. I mean, just look at the horrible things they did to Gwenview, or Dolphin... :-\ -- Luciano ES >>

sudo-trinity in Debian Squeeze

(Moving discussion of sudo-trinity to a new thread.) On Fri January 14 2011 10:42:59 Timothy Pearson wrote: > The reason for the third-party sudo is simply to add /opt/kde3/bin and > friends to the built-in RPATH variable, thus allowing Trinity applications > to be launched via "sudo <appname>", instead of "sudo > /opt/trinity/bin/<appname>". This would allow people to retain Debian's sudo if they prefer. --Mike Bird

Disabling Nepomuk
by John A. Sullivan III 14 Jan '11

14 Jan '11

Hello, all. One of the bug reasons we avoid KDE4 is the resource drain of running Nepomuk. However, we are finding it is always starting on our Trinity desktops. How does one prevent Nepomuk from starting? Thanks - John

Furture of KDE3 questions
by Larry Stotler 14 Jan '11

14 Jan '11

High guys. This may have been spelled out somewhere, but if so I missed it, so please bear with me. I've been a KDE user since 1.x which was part of SuSE v5.3. Up till KDE4, I was always found KDE to do what I needed. I have some questions about the future direction of KDE3: 1. Qt4 port - I saw that this is one the roadmap. Is this really neccessary? I know that a lot of my complaints about KDE4 was the useless revamp of the interface, but having to have both Qt3/4 libs was also a huge pain. I'm not against a port if there are compelling reasons for it, but I have seen no compelling reason for KDE4. It uses more memory and space. I have a lot of older laptops that I find KDE3 to be snappy and KDE4 to be like molassas. 2. What about the other KDE projects like KOffice? I've always made use of KOffice instead of anything else. I find OpenOffice to be bloated. 3. Removal of HAL in favor of udev - Is this something that is going to affect KDE3? 4. Dependencies - I'm not sure how it is on other distros, but I've always found SuSE/openSUSE to suffer from unneccessary dependencies. Not everyone has a Palmpilot device, and most PIMs assume you do and force you to install support for something you don't have. I'm not sure how the core KDE and the other projects handle this. How is Trinity planning to do it? 5. XOrg and KDE3 - on openSUSE 11.3, I can't setup my displays because openSUSE removed it's config program SaX2 and I can't get XOrg to work with my displays. Works fine in openSUSE 11.0/KDE3 because I have SaX2. Is there an alternative for configuring displays? Sorry if some of this is a repeat. I'm new to the list, but a longtime KDE user. Thanx

Thoughts & wishes about the Trinity project status and its future...
by Nicolas BERCHER 13 Jan '11

13 Jan '11

Hi, I have a few questions about the Trinity project status,(part of them seem to have been partially discussed on the list): - Is Trinity endorsed in any way by the KDE project (except the share of sources repository)? - Are there original KDE3 developpers involved in Trinity development? If so, I'd really like to know if they do it because KDE4 broke too much things (and/or they consider a desktop environment should not break things this way)? - What are the long term perspectives about Trinity? Will Trinity become something different than KDE3 or it keep it as close as possible? I mean, the move from KDE3 to KDE4 changed & broke a lots of things that I used to work with since 2004. I'd really like a desktop environment that doesn't change too much, that keeps its basis stable (eg. themes can evolve, apps be improved, but keep it functionally the same!). By the end, I really think it's a matter of "respect for users": if one changes things like KDE4 did, what do we have to think about respect they have (or don't have) for their users? Debian Squeeze: installing trinity requires to remove gnome package
by Nicolas BERCHER 13 Jan '11

13 Jan '11

Hi, I use Trinity on 3 machines (1×Lenny+2×Squeeze) and was surprized installing Trinity on Squeeze: aptitude asked me to remove the gnome package and a few others (sorry I didn't have a copy of the aptitude messages). The main reason was about desktop-base (initially 6.0.5) conflicting with desktop-base-trinity (5.0.3-5). I assume this isn't the expected behaviour since there's no reason to remove gnome when installing trinity. However, I don't miss gnome at all but still I am surprized. Does this mean that there will be more and more issues when installing trinity on systems with recent libraries in a near future? I wonder how much trinity will evolve in parallel of kde4/gnome packages and underlying libraries that also evolves...? Nicolas

Removing Plymouth
by Luciano ES 13 Jan '11

13 Jan '11

I hate Plymouth as much as I hate KDE4. Whatever pimp-faced form-over-function moron who decided to inflict this crap upon us obviously doesn't use encrypted hard disks. I do, so the damn thing keeps failing and forcing me to boot several times until the damn thing finally boots correctly. I am absolutely sick of it, it has to go. But there is no 'kdm' program installed and there doesn't seem to be any for me to install in Adept Manager either. How am I going to boot into KDE3/Trinity when I finally get rid of Plymouth? Upgrading from KDE4
by Neil Youngman 11 Jan '11

11 Jan '11

I was a happy KDE3 user for years, but recently, as part of upgrading Debian I got KDE4. I've tried GNOME and various other desktop environments, but I didn't find anything I liked. Recently someone debian-users mentioned trinity on and it seems to be the desktop environment I'm looking for. Before I try it out, I would like to know what pitfalls there are in upgrading from KDE4 to Debian. The KDE3->KDE4 transition was a bit messy and I think it's likely that KDE4 has messed up my old KDE3 configuration. Has anyone else done this and what would they advise? Should I start from scratch with a clean configuration or will it be OK to copy my existing configuration? Neil Youngman

Better choice of extras?
by Luciano ES 09 Jan '11

09 Jan '11

I want to install the *-restricted-extras package, and I can't make up my mind whether I should install kubuntu-restricted-extras or ubuntu-restricted-extras. The kubuntu-restricted-extras option wants to install more than 100 dependencies, including some so-called KDE 4 "runtime" files, which makes me nervous. I've been finding KDE 4 very intrusive since it's been out, always forcing its way and trying to make people give up on 3.5 by sheer imposition. The ubuntu-restricted-extras option wants to install 60 dependencies, including some Gnome components. I suppose I would not get any KDE integration? I don't know. Which one do you experts recommend? -- Luciano ES >>

Kernel source doesn't match kernel?
by Luciano ES 03 Jan '11

03 Jan '11

I am trying Ubuntu Maverick with Trinity 3.5.12, the live image I got from the trinity.pearsoncomputing.net site. I am testing how well it works before I do a potential upgrade. One of my tests includes installing VMWare. I couldn't make it work, VMWare complains that the source in /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.whatever/include doesn't match the installed/running kernel, so it can't build the required modules. I got the source from the Adept Manager application (plus the build-essential package). Do you folks know anything about that? How can I get a kernel source that will match the running kernel? -- Luciano ES >>

Netbook built-in mic support
by Luciano ES 02 Jan '11

02 Jan '11

I am using Trinity with Ubuntu Jaunty, an old installation. I am considering an upgrade. Before trying the latest Trinity distribution, I tried Mint 9 (Isadora). I didn't like it, it messes up too much with KDE 3. It forces me to remove KDE 3/Trinity completely if I try to install buld-essential and/or kernel source. Incredibly stupid. There is only one thing I envy about Mint: it supports the built-in microphone on my netbook, so I don't have to hold an external mic when I'm using Skype. That's new to me, it's great news, and sound quality is pretty good too! I tested the Trinity 3.5.11/Lucid and 3.5.12/Maverick live images, and the mic does not work in any of them. Do you guys know how I can achieve that with a pure "Trinity distro" installation? Thanks in advance. -- Luciano ES >>
