External mike not working on Dell laptop

Hi, I have a HDA Intel soundcard in a Dell Inspiron 1420. Output sound is currently fine, even Timidity is working seamlessly. However, input sound using the front mike-jack isn't working (there is no built-in mike). This used to work (took some blood, sweat, tears, pulseaudio eradication and alsa-base.conf in the past) I haven't used the external mike for some time (got a smartphone, stopped using Skype) so don't know when it stopped working. I've tested the microphone I'm using on another computer, it's fine. Help? Here are today's running notes, followed by my last dmesg: <2013-07-13 Sat> Sound working beautifully except for mike in; static recorded when I try w/ a mike plugged in, using krec. Fiddling with mixer settings can also record NO static. Goody. Looking at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SndHdaIntelSoundProblems lsmod shows snd_hda_intel being used. lspci 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) cat /proc/asound/card*/codec\#*|grep -i codec Codec: SigmaTel STAC9228 Codec: Conexant ID 2c06 ---- The following alsa commands no longer work, and couldn't immediately figure out how to do this as a service, /etc/init.d/alsa-utils stop rmmod snd_hda_intel modprobe snd-hda-intel /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start so I tried stopping sound from MainMenu->System Settings->Sound and got: "ERROR: Module snd_hda_intel is in use" so apparently didn't really stop ALSA. Broken installation

Help! Following what I thought was a routine upgrade of my Debian Jessie/Sid system, Trinity has broken. Completely. Many programs have disappeared from /opt/trinity/bin (most particularly kmail - I'm writing this on an old backup system). taskbar icons disappeared

I am running TDE R14.0.0. Recently, I configured the panel (I think it was just positioning at the middle, doing transparency--which did not work--and choosing the display style and taskbar grouping,) and my taskbar icons disappeared. I changed around the things I had changed many times, and 'show icons' was selected (except a few times turning it off and on to see if that worked)... but they will not come back. If anyone has a solution, it would be good to CC the message to my e-address, because I do not use Gmane much right now, rather than Usenet.

BADSIG, 404?

Apologies if this has been answered recently, but I'm getting several errors while trying to update. I was getting BADSIG errors, but those seem to be gone and "apt-get update" completes, but now "apt-get dist-upgrade" fails with 404s: Err http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu/ precise/main kubuntu-default-settings-trinity all 4:3.5.13.2-0ubuntu12.04.0+0 404 Not Found etc, etc. If I put that URL into FF, I get to a mirror, so that part seems to be working. Print preview problem

We have two machines running TDE, one 64-bit and one 32-bit, both with 3.5.13.2 on Debian Jessie/Sid. On the 32-bit one, print preview fails with "Preview failed: unable to start program Postscript Info" This is on (for example) kmail or kpdf. On the 64-bit one, no problems. Hi all, I gave a try to Mageia 3 today, and wanted to install Trinity Desktop, following the instructions given. However it does not work.
