And I do intend to reinstall, and make the change to Devuan. But I did a reinstallation before when I had this same problem, and it keeps coming back. So I would like to resolve this issue before I move on to a Devuan installation.
The last guy I had seen with a simillar problem of "vanishing free space" was a human rights activist. He got a "lawful" trojan that took
screenshots
about every second and stored them in a "hidden" folder.

Yeah, I've been worried about something like that for years now. That's why
I
moved to SF from the Midwest. I've been working on a project that it seems certain people "out there" don't like. And also among my friends I keep too many friends of dark complexion, foreign origin, or the wrong religion.
These days, one can't be "too paranoid"; and I expect the Thought Police to kick in my door at any moment. If that happens, it just proves that they are more paranoid than I am. I mostly read ancient literature, and spend my life deep in the past.
Oh well, you can't please everybody!

Try clearing all tmp directories, as well as FF/SM and other browser caches. Anything temporary, dump it. Then go to tdecontrol and set it to clear tmp. Do the same for root, if you use it alot.
