Open a graphical package manager, like synaptic, and do a wild card search. Just enter "engine" without the quotes. If it's NOT there, install it and see if that helps. Remember to go to kcontrol and adjust the gtk3 to default. It's under appearances and themes.

bingo. found it, nuked it, gparted runs. (though i ran gparted off another machine earlier and have been making my 10tb backup for several hours now, i still need to be able to run it and other applications that use gtk2.)
but it's late, so let's postpone immortal soul deletion for another time.
