Hi all!
I just found a working syntax highlighting of markdown files for kate. Original comes from https://github.com/claes/kate-markdown , I just added the fileextension *.mdwn for ikiwiki.
To try it out: decompress the attached markdown.xml.xz and copy it to /opt/trinity/share/apps/katepart/syntax/ , then restart kate and open an arbitrary markdown file (github readme.md ...)
If this works for otheres, too, I'd suggest to add the file to TDE :)

I just installed it but found the "header" highlighting text styles were difficult to read with a light grey background.
To fix this, go to menu settings -> configure kate -> (dialog) -> (tree view) Editor -> Fonts & Colors -> (tab) Highlighting Text Styles -> (combo box) Markup/Markdown -> (list box) h1,h2... and make them a bit darker.
