I've been running Ubuntu 10.04/Trinity -- all fat, dumb, and happy. Especially happy.
Now, while poking around at http://www.trinitydesktop.org/ I see I should be/could be using Trinity v3.5.13. I'm not. I'm running Trinty 3.5.11. sigh...
My apt sources: : |$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kde3-maintainers.list |# KDE3 repositories | |deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu lucid main |deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
The http://www.trinitydesktop.org/ apt sources list for 10.04/Lucid contains:
deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu lucid main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu lucid main deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.13... lucid main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.13... lucid main
So , is it enough to change my /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kde3-maintainers.list file to the trinity-v3.5.13 sources and apt-get update/upgrade? Or, will I snafu my nicely running system? Are there any gotchas?
Or, do I have to upgrade through trinity-v3.5.12 first -- somehow?
Thanks in advance, Jonesy

Then you'll want to be sure to have a good backup of 3.5.12 before you upgrade to 3.5.13. Some of us have had show-stopping issues with 3.5.13 and have had to go back to 3.5.12 or to other DE's until the problems are sorted out.

Could he upgrade directly to Slavek's packages? I don't see why not.

Because it's a 'production' system.
Whilst I appreciate Slavek's work in finding fixes for some of the problems and making patched versions available I don't want to install unofficial/third-party releases on my production systems.
I have a few systems here that I can use for testing (as and when I get the time to do so) so it's no biggie if I need to change the software repo settings to try new (unofficial/third-party) versions of software on them and/or then possibly run into problems.
However, I wouldn't want to do this on my 'production' systems because not only is there the risk of hitting other problems that stop you working but in making them non-standard you increase the maintenance overhead and also leave yourself open to potential problems in the future when you want to get those systems back on to the official releases; with unofficial/third-party releases you just can't predict what will happen - sure, most of the time there aren't problems but I'm afraid that I've been in this game long enough to have been hit by this.
So it's not because I don't have any faith in Slavek's patched releases that I won't install them on my production systems; it's because, in addition to the risk of 'new' problems, maintaining non-standard production systems takes up production time that you really want to spend on production.

It looks like Slavek's backport are backports to 3.5.13 from the results of current development (3.5.14) work. So, they would be of no use _until_ I get to 3.5.13.
However, Tim has passed along the (semi-hidden) 3.5.12 ppa(s) location. I'll approach it that-a-way: 3.5.11 -> 3.5.12 -> 3.5.13
Then I'll look at Slavek's packages and see if any would interest me.
Thanks for the responses. Jonesy

I realize that I did not keep 3.5.12 installation instructions up on the website, however I have not deleted a TDE binary build yet. This may need to change due to disk space constraints in the future, but I will try to give at least 3 months of warning on the announce mailing list before I delete anything. The 3.5.12 packages can be viewed here: https://quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/~trinity/+archive/trinity/+packages

And, I believe the best approach is to:
1. apt-get update/upgrade the system in the current configuration 2. boot to a command line 3. Change the Trinity ppa sources to 3.5.12 4. apt-get update/upgrade to pull in 3.5.12 5. boot into TDE and look around....
Then , later . repeat 1-> 5 for 3.5.13

Hi Jonesy,
You can use apt sources pointing directly to one of the mirrors:
deb http://depot-trinity.dotriver.eu/trinity/debian squeeze main deb http://depot-trinity.dotriver.eu/trinity-builddeps/debian squeeze main
Or upgrade from 3.5.11 straight to 3.5.13.x. This would not be a problem.

What am I doing wrong?

Well, maybe not "SOLVED". Rather, I once again have to publicly expose my own failings.
When I installed this system (from a Ubuntu 10.04LTS/Trinity CD that I downloaded from (memory fails me here...) ), I checked the [Help] on konqueror's main toolbar:
Help -> About Trinity == "Trinity Desktop Environment Release 3.5.11
Help -> About konqueror == Konqueror 3.5.10 (Using 3.5.11 [Trinity])
So, I had to believe I was running KDE 3.5.11 [Trinity]. Right? I never checked any further/deeper.
In a flash of unusual wisdom, last night I did a `dpkg -l`:

So, it looks like I have 3.5.12 in place already -- dis-irregardless of what About Trinity and About Konqueror have to say...
I apologize about the noise I've injected here. And, I thank Tim and Slavek for trying to be so helpful.
(In any case, I don't believe 'we' ever found a good, working 3.5.12 repository.)
Now to move on to 3.5.13....
Thanks, and my apologies. Jonesy
