While searching for mail that had been sent to me in the last day but I had not received, I discovered that my email provider's spam filters had "helpfully" moved 231 pieces of mail into its spam folder. (There was one actual piece of spam.) After downloading the mail, some of the pieces could not be opened (clicking on them has no effect). I quit kmail and restarted it, and some of the stuck ones were then openable, but I still have several that are stubborn.
I suspect that I need to rebuild the indices of my mail folders. How do I do that?

Also, if I try to move any of these files to another mail folder it gets marked with overstrikes but does not move.

If you use maildir, then you'll need to figure out which mail causes this an delete it manually. There are some malformed headers that cause kmail to lock up like this.

After issues, some of which I've reported here, I've come to discover that a good treatment for kmail maildir directories is to rename the mail directory, copy its contents to a new directory with the original name of the mail directory, and once everything is copied to opeen kmail again. A surprising amount of time it solves the problem.
(As long as I'm here, I mentioned the machine just up and crashing from time to time. I do not know that I found the cause, but the installation of a new, clean, much, much larger chip cooler has resulted in it no longer doing that.)

Yeesh. Okay, I'll try that tomorrow.

All right. It's strange, though, that most of these are replies to threads in various mailing lists, from people who are active on those lists.
