Occasionally, after my system hangs (after forgetting to kill my Firefox instances), many of my customized desktop settings (colours, fonts) are lost and I have to reset them all (a tedious exercise).
Does anyone know what might cause this, and how to prevent it?

don't know about the settings, but I installed additional RAM and no it is 20GB. This solved the firefox issue and from the 20 1GB is still free.
some settings are saved in .trinity/share/config/kdeglobals see if permissions are OK and alike.
