I've got another question. Again, my home system works well and my laptop has trouble. Both run kde 3.5 on Ubuntu. The desktop is 64 bit and the laptop 32 bit.
When kopete starts on my laptop is can't connect to kwallet. It prompts for passwords, then says that it can't save them securely. This happens every time I log in.
On my desktop, kopete connects to kwallet fine. I get prompted once for the kwallet password, and never again.
I don't even know where to start looking for the problem.
Michael
Hi Michael,
Do you only have this problem since your using the KDE3 PPA?
Did your kwallet worked once?

I believe it worked until the move from /usr/kde3 to /opt/kde3. The laptop has only ever used the KDE3 PPA archives. In fact, I installed ubuntu and immediately added the PPA archive as the easiest way to get a working KDE 3.5. Every time I've started with Kubuntu and then tried to put KDE 3.5 on it I've had problems.

Hm, I don't know if there are new bugs in the new KDE packages (using /opt/kde3) which only occur on systems with 32 bit. It might well be that you've lost some essential packages during the last updates when the PPA was inconsistent.
You could check the following: - is the DCOP server running? test: install kdcop and start it -> you should see "kwalletmanager" listed in kdcop - what happens if you rename .kde (or is it .kde3 now?) in your home directory? can you work with kwallet again when KDE is using a new configuration? That would mean that something is wrong with your kwallet file, e.g., file permissions.
Good luck!

dcop is running and shows both kwalletmanager and kopete. Konqueror can use the wallet for passwords w/o trouble. But kopete still can't use it.
Maybe this weekend I'll get time to try messing with my .kde3 file. This is my work machine so I'll need to be very careful.
Thanks,

Oh, I didn't know that your kwallet works with other programs. Than it wouldn't make much sense to rename ~/.kde3, since your KDE configuration seems to be OK. What happens if you open kwallet and navigate to Kopete->Passwords->{some account}. Can you unhide the content of the nodes (see the passwords)? If you know all kopete passwords, you can also remove the "Kopete" node in kwallet and try to enter the passwords again via kopete.
Good luck!

OK, looks like kopete is completely unable to connect to kwallet. But why? I have no idea. Sorry. This should have nothing to do with the new location of kde.

I understand that my suggestion is NOT a fix for your problem, but why do you use kopete and not pidgin, for example? I used to use kopete, but pidgin is much more convenient and user friendly, IMO.

Mostly because I like KDE things. They work well together. Pidgin doesn't know how to read my Kaddressbook contents, so there is no integration with my addressbook. Pidgin doesn't look like a KDE program. Pidgin doesn't use the KDE libraries, so it adds disproportionately to the memory use by my computer.
I haven't found much that I want from my IM client that Kopete doesn't supply. Does Pidgin to video? I'm not sure. There is OTR now for Kopete which is nice, though I admit that the pidgin implementation is better. I think Pidgin understands chatrooms better.
In what way do you find pidgin more convenient?
Michael
Apart from the fact that the contact list in pidgin is much more space-consuming I'm still missing very important features in pidgin, e.g., the GPG plugin. And OTR is not really an alternative since it does not support encrypted off-line messages.
Regards, Stefan
Hi Stefan,
I've been loosely following your thread, and I think there is one thing you have not yet tried.
In ~/.kde3/share/config, there is a file named kopeterc And also, in ~/.kde3/share/apps/, there is a folder named kopete. Can you try moving both the file and the folder to a backup folder somewhere, and try the Kopete Kwallet functions again? It is possible that kopete somehow put the full path to kwallet files into its own configuration files, and therefore cannot find Kwallet at the new prefix.
If this doesn't work, simply move your backed up file and folder to their original locations, no harm done.

So I finally found some time to (try and) set up compiz on my laptop again. It used to work on 8.04, but seems to be broken now. If I install only compiz stuff with -kde3, I can use only the sluggish gtk window decorator. If I try and install emerald I have non-kde3 dependencies. This of course does not install cleanly because it says "already in package XY." Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Ben
Have you installed emerald-kde3? How are you attempting to enable Emerald? Does the rest of Compiz work properly?
At the moment, -kde3 compiz and emerald cannot be installed simultaneously with non-kde3 compiz and emerald due to bug 57 (http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=57). That bug is next on my list of problems to deal with.

Tim, thanks for your response, and I'm sorry I didn't know there was a bug filed. If I try and install emerald-kde3 I get the following dependencies: compiz-core compiz-plugins compiz-wrapper libdecoration0 libemeraldengine0-kde3
note that there is only one -kde3... the installation then fails because: E: /var/cache/apt/archives/compiz-core_1%3a0.7.8-0ubuntu4.1_i386.deb: trying to overwrite `/usr/share/man/man1/compiz.1.gz', which is also in package compiz-core-kde3
I am pretty sure I have installed all the necessary packages, and believe that the problem is the non-kde3 dependencies.
Thanks a lot!

Hi Ben,
You're right! Are you running an i386 kernel? For some reason my amd64 system shows the correct -kde3 dependencies, while my i386 system shows the same incorrect dependencies as yours.

At the moment, -kde3 compiz and emerald cannot be installed simultaneously with non-kde3 compiz and emerald due to bug 57 (http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=57). That bug is next on my list of problems to deal with.

I folks!
Today I updated my sources.list to the new repository at launchpad, but still "apt-get install kubuntu-desktop-kde3" wants to install kde4 packages like guidance manager, etc. - see attached log file :(
Is it possible to install KDE3 on Intrepid AMD64 at the moment or should I wait some more weeks for the package getting "production ready"?
And: What about bug reports - should they be filed at https://bugs.launchpad.net/~kde3-maintainers? There is no 'submit bug report link' on that site...
Cheers, Andreas
Hi Andreas,
No, kubuntu-desktop-kde3 is not supposed to install KDE4 packages. I have been doing some work related to stripping them out, but obviously did not catch all of them.
If you would like to, I could fix this problem a lot faster if you made a list of the incorrect (KDE4) packages that are being installed.
I am not familiar enough with Launchpad yet to know for sure, but I guess that you would file a standard Launchpad bug and then it would be assigned to me. I will verify this shortly; in the meantime just use my bugtracker here: http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net
Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

Thanks for the list! I have updated kubuntu-desktop-kde3 so that it no longer installs these packages.
If you find any other problems with it please let me know.

I've been using it on my Dual ADM64 system for months. Yes, there are a few kde4 packages that get installed, but they don't seem to cause problems.

Ok, it looks like compiz is broken for intel x server, and it's not related to the kde3 repository. If anybody has gotten compiz working reliably without hanging on a lenovo t400 please let me know how you did it. ;-) Tim, would it be possible to get k9copy and fusion-icon for kde3?
Thanks a lot!

Tim, thanks for your response, and I'm sorry I didn't know there was a bug filed. Hi Ben,
I generally stay away from Compiz and Intel hardware, as the Intel drivers are generally horrid as far as fancy hardware acceleration goes..
k9copy-kde3 is now in the repository (I even updated the version to the latest). fusion-icon-kde3 is next on my list of things to do.

Hi Stefan,
I've been loosely following your thread, and I think there is one thing you have not yet tried.
Thanks Tim. That wasn't the solution, but it led me to the solution. Poking around those config files, I found that kopete was listed in kwallet as "Always Deny", so of course it wasn't getting in.
I don't know how that happened, but it isn't happening anymore. I wouldn't have found it without your suggestion.
Thanks
Michael
