problem with disk & filesystems module
by dep 26 Jun '13

26 Jun '13

greetings. i am up-to-date with TDE, but i have an issue -- at boot, it stops to tell me that sdc1 and sdd1 are not ready and to wait or hit S. these are my SD cards and i am religious about properly unmounting them before removal. they, after boot and startup of TDE, mount and umount successfully from a terminal window. i went to system settings in hope of finding the issue. what i found was: "The module Disk & Filesystems could not be loaded." possible reasons given were an error during the last upgrade leaving an orphaned control module or "old third party modules lying around." this is not especially helpful. what ought i do, other then reformat and reinstall, which i have neither time nor inclination to do? thanks very much for any help that might be proffered. best, -- dep The shortest distance between you and playing great acoustic guitar: the great new instructional DVDs from Marjorie Thompson, available at www.MarjorieThompson.com

problems with xmodmap and international keyboards
by Uwe Brauer 26 Jun '13

26 Jun '13

<#secure method=smime mode=sign> Hello Using a thinkpad X61 Laptop I am on Kubuntu 10.04 with trinity 3.5.10 (I think), my environment language is (US) english. Now I want to bind the control key to hyper (and capslock--> control and win-->super) I do this with the following xmodmap file keycode 133 = Super_L NoSymbol Super_L keycode 134 = Super_R NoSymbol Super_R keycode 37 = Hyper_L NoSymbol Hyper_L keycode 66 = Control_L NoSymbol Control_L add Mod4 = Hyper_L That works nicely. However when I change the keyboard, from US english say to Spanish or German via the trinity/KDE interface, the hyper binding is gone. I execute xmodmap again, with the above configure file and xev tells me that the binding is as expected but when I type it is not. So I have to restart the Xserver execute xmodmap and then everything is fine again. Anybody can help me with this issue?

Nightly Ubuntu LiveCDs now available
by Timothy Pearson 21 Jun '13

21 Jun '13

After a long delay, automated nightly builds of Ubuntu LiveCDs with TDE R14 are now available at http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/cdimages/ubuntu/ These LiveCDs offer a convenient way to test TDE R14 (or the current development branch) without risk of damaging your existing installation. They are currently experimental, however shortly after R14 is released an official LiveCD will be released from this autogenerated CD set. Therefore, if you want to help the offical LiveCD quality, please download the latest ISO, test it, and report any defects to the bugtracker. Enjoy! Tim

[trinity-users] TDE broken in Debian Sid
by David Hare 19 Jun '13

19 Jun '13

I have run TDE in Sid before with good success. At the moment it will not install because of newer binutils (which will probably appear in Jessie very soon). Most likely an existing TDE will break on dist-upgrade > The following packages have unmet dependencies: > kdesktop-trinity : Depends: binutils (< 2.23) but 2.23.52.20130612-1 > is to be installed > The following packages have unmet dependencies: > libr0 : Depends: binutils (< 2.23) but 2.23.52.20130612-1 is to be > installed Downgrading binutils causes lots of other things to be removed. This is the case with 3.5.13.2 also nightly builds (R14) Any solutions? David

tray icon showing battery state
by Stefan Endrullis 08 Jun '13

08 Jun '13

Hi Trinity fans, I recently upgraded my Ubuntu system to "precise". Thereby package kde-guidance-powermanager-trinity got removed, because it depends on python-qt3 which is not available in precise. So I lost my battery charging information in the system tray. Does anybody know a good alternative for this icon? Any program that provides a tray icon that can be used in the kicker? Thanks in advance. Best regards, Stefan

another little issue
by dep 22 May '13

22 May '13

greetings. i was given a used but fairly recent (though it still said "ibm" not "lenovo") desktop machine with a 1024x768 lcd, which i thought i would fix up for a disabled neighbor. it has XP on it, but my neighbor used to program in C and so i thought i'd make it a dual-boot machine. it has two 3gHz pentium processors and a batch of memory. it's old enough that i figured i'd put trinity-ubuntu 10.10 on it. i boot from the CD, and i get the usual dab of text messages during boot, but then -- nothing. screen goes and stays dark, in auto-sleep. machine and monitor work fine on windows side, but i can't get trinity to install. i can go ahead and give it to him with windows, but would rather offer both, because he'll like linux better. ideas? -- dep The shortest distance between you and great fingerstyle guitar playing? strange keyboard issue
by dep 21 May '13

21 May '13

hello, good people. this is not a new issue, but it's a continually annoying one, so i thought i'd bring it up in case someone knows an easy fix. i am here at the office running a thinkpad in a docking station, with external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. the keyboard is attached via a usb adapter and mostly works fine. when i use a plain old bog standard keyboard, all is well but for the fact that every so often, unpredictably as far as i can tell, it stops accepting input and the keyboard lights flash for a couple seconds, then it works again just fine. any characters typed in during that period, though, are lost. this is not a problem when i use a trusty old ibm model m keyboard. here, the issue is different. as long as i'm in console mode, no X or framebuffer or anything running, all is well. but when X starts, no keyboard input is accepted unless and until i unplug the keyboard and plug it back in. then all is well. this is consistent across several model m keyboards i have tried, so it's not a keyboard or cord issue. something happens when it goes into graphical mode that makes it think it doesn't have a keyboard. i suspect that there is a configuration switch somewhere that will fix this, but i can't find it. anyone know? thanks, and i hope this wasn't terribly o/t. -- dep The shortest distance between you and great fingerstyle guitar playing? How to configure ssh-agent with Trinity?

xdg-open issue
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 17 May '13

17 May '13

Hi all! I just came around an anoying xdg issue: $ xdg-open justapdf.pdf This opens a pdf, but with Gimp! I fiddeled around with gimp.desktop without success. I fiddeled around with xdg-mime without success: $ xdg-mime query default application/pdf /opt/trinity/share/applications/kde/kpdf.desktop but it opens gimp. IMO xdg-* is quite broken. :-( Now the only workaround I came up with is setting the environment variabe DE to kde: export DE=kde Then xdg-open uses kfmclient and that calles the kpdf. Now, would it be possibel to let TDE set that variable by default or am I missing a vital point? Nik

TDE on Debian/Wheezy
by James Downing 17 May '13

17 May '13

I saw a question earlier, and I was also interested, in how to install TDE on Debian/Wheezy/7.0. Since it did not appear that TDE was available yet for Wheezy, I was concerned that I would have to continue to wait for my favorite desktop, so I would need to continue to wait to upgrade Debian. Then I saw are response that I could use an un-released development version of TDE for wheezy, and I was prepared to do that, but did not step into that yet. So, I commented out the TDE archive from my /etc/apt/sources.list file, and upgraded Debian/Squeeze/6.0.X to Wheeze as usual. I was surprised to find out that TDE was retained in full and it works fine. The only experience I have found thus far is that I cannot use the mouse right away after switching from one user desktop to another. I can use the keyboard to unlock the screen, and then the mouse becomes usable again. Otherwise, the new upgrade is flawless (as usual for Debian). Is there anything that I am unaware of that is actually broken, but perhaps, I have not noticed ? -- James D. Freels, Ph.D. freelsjd(a)gmail.com

Problem adding a user
by Dan Youngquist 10 May '13

10 May '13

Hi all, This is on a machine running David Hare's Exe Debian Wheezy respin. When I add a user, the new user doesn't show up in either the user list in Kuser, or on the login screen. It does create a home directory, but it doesn't add the user to the extra_groups from adduser.conf. The new user can login to TDE at the login screen, but the first-run wizard runs at every login. I tried adding the user with kuser and from a shell with adduser, with the same result. I ran out of time and had to leave, but later realized I should've checked ownership on the new home directory. Before I go back and try again, can anyone offer any other suggestions? I tried it on another machine with Exe installed from the same CD with, I think, the same set of other stuff (multimedia etc.) installed, and everything worked fine. Odd printing behaviour !
by Baron 09 May '13

09 May '13

Hi Guys, I am using PCLinuxOS from the image that Alexandre Couture created and have discovered an odd printing behaviour. If I click on print from any PDF or Image it prints OK first time. If I then try to print a second copy or close the application and try to print something else the print dialogue comes up frozen. If I click on exit a few times it will tell me that "Kprint" is not responding and give me the opertunity to terminate it. After this I cannot print anything at all without restarting the machine. However when I get back to the desktop, I get the message that there is no default printer and to use the "--all" switch. ?? Clearing the error message allows me to continue as normal. Untill I print something. I have tried the various dialogues but seem unable to find or access my printer. Don't laugh, I'm still using my HP Deskjet 500 MK1 from over thirty years ago. I long as I can keep refilling the cartridge with ink it will continue to be in use ! Thanks guys: -- Best Regards: Baron

konqueror and system:/
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 01 May '13

01 May '13

Hi all! Could somebody plese check if this happens not only to me: - plug in a USB stick - copy a konqueror web archive (*.war) to that stick. - unplug the stick - plug it in again - konqueror opens the stick at system:/media/sdb1/ - klick on the web archive - konqeror gives an error message about being not able to open the file. - replace system:/media/sdb1/ with /media/disk/ and it works. If it happens to others than me, then I'd like to ask why trinity uses the system:/ - url and not the actual mount point of the device. When I press F4, I get a shell at /media/disk/, not system:/media/sdb1/. Is there a way to make konqueror do the same, i.e. use the actual mount point? Nik

Hello all, I've been watching the conversations on your Trinity users lists with great interest, but haven't had much time to participate myself. (I am not really a lurker, just busy!) Over the past couple years I keep trying to upgrade my system, especially after the Ubuntu family released 12.04 LTS. I got TDE to run pretty well on top of Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Lubuntu, with varying degrees of success. It seems to run best on Lubuntu for some reason, perhaps because it is less cluttered with possibly conflicting software. The purpose of this transcriptome is to be used for differential expression analysis. Since I wanted the transcriptome to be as complete as possible I relied on high coverage. For my first assembly I used ~1 billion single-end reads, these reads are from different libraries and the length range goes from 25 to 75 bp. After running Trinity I got 320276 contigs longer than 100 bp. As some of the contigs were redundant I decided to used minimus2 to merge very similar sequences, and I ended up with more than 100000 contigs. When I mapped the libraries that I want to analyze for differential expression more than 89 % of the reads per library were mappable and around 1-2 % of the reads were aligning to more than one place, so I was quite happy with these results. I understand that with very high coverage I could be assembling transcripts that originated from pervasive transcription, and I think that this could be one of the reasons why I am getting over 100000 contigs, besides fragmentation. But this might not be a major problem since I could apply filters before proceeding with the differential expression analysis, for example I could only keep contigs that have more than x number of reads. However, now I have access to paired-end libraries and to other single-end libraries that have longer reads (75-100 bp), therefore I assembled these new libraries to check whether paired-end information could solve fragmentation problems. All together I had 2682537009 reads and I used in silico normalization to reduce the number of reads to 107846820. For the normalization I did not used the --PARALLEL_STATS parameter (memomy limitations). I followed the same pipeline than with my first assembly and after Trinity and minimus2 I have 200655 contigs. Nevertheless, now I have more redundant contigs, for instance some components have more than 100 sequences and they are sharing at least 50 bp; and I do not see an evident gain in completeness when I compare my two transcriptomes, at least with the assays that I carried out, such as checking the number and coverage of orthologous sequences that are included in the assemblies, using as reference the transcriptome of the phylogenetically closest organism. At this point I do not know whether it will be better to use my first assembly for further analysis or to try to assemble my new dataset again using options like --REDUCE (as previously suggested http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=CAJCu8qPrOE1BjFPk%…) or --max_number_of_paths_per_node to solve redundancy problems and --min_kmer_cov to not include so lowly expressed transcripts. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions on this regard. Regards, Jose Trejo Uribe

Kick-Off Launcher
by Alexandre Couture 17 Apr '13

17 Apr '13

Hi everyone! In the trinity-devel mailing list, there is a nst about keeping or removing the Kick-Off launcher. Here is a part of what is written: Timothy Pearson wrote: >> A good solution would be to 1) remove kickoff since it's unlikely that >> it is used, and doesn't keep in the style of trinity and port the cool >> features of kickoff into the original kicker panel, if there are any. > I would need a list of any improvements in Kickoff that are not in Kicker. > Copious amounts of whitespace around each widget is not considered an > improvement. ;-) Perhaps you could gather information from list members > on why they use Kickoff vs. Kicker? > Francois Andriot wrote: >Hello, I'm always using Kickoff menu instead of Kicker, so I would'nt >like it to be removed. >I currently have no problem with it. >Here are some reasons: >- I prefer having separate tabs for favorites/all >applications/Computer/History , instead of having a single huge menu >with many submenus. >- I prefer the search feature of Kickoff, which displays immediatly the >icon of the app I'm searching. In kicker, the search feature justs grays >out the directories, but I still have to browse the tree to find the >application I want. When the application list is very long, it is still >not very convenient. >- I like the way applications are shown in menu: a "big" icon, >application name written with big letters, application summary with >small letters. So there is no confusion between application name and >application summary. >Maybe we should just ship Kickoff as a separate application, like kbfx ? I have the same point of view as Francois Andriot on that and I can even add: -Kick-Off is as fast as though. If the program I want to launch is Gimp, I click on the start menu, I write ''gim'' on the keyboard and a menu with ''Gimp'' already highlighted appear. I just have to press enter. Otherwise, in the classic menu, I would have to find the ''Graphics'' menu and I would need to read all the names of every programs in the list before I can see ''Gimp'' in the list. And everybody here knows that TDE comes with plenty of programs, so depending of what you are looking for, the menu can be long... We use search engines to find what we want on the Web, but it wouldn't be a good idea on your computer? -Having a little summary of what the programs are is much more intuitive than having to start it, to see what it is. It is just more simple for users coming from Windows. -On my little Asus EEE, with a screen resolution of 800x480, the Kick-off is just the right size, where on the classic start menu, often a sub-menu takes all the screen and many columns, and it gets just confusing and harder to find what you are looking for. -I just don't get the point of users telling everywhere on this mailing list that NOTHING should change in TDE incomparison with KDE 3.5.10 and every single bit should stay identical, but the Kick-Off should be dropped. It is the same thing with Dolphin. Those are 2 KDE3 programs, it is not because they also exists in KDE4 that they are evil. If the Kick-Off is to be dropped one day or another, would it be at least possible to implement the search feature of the classic start menu in a more efficient way? Just my opinion... -Alexandre

Hi everyone! I hope everybody had an happy Easter weekend! I wrote a little Zenity script to switch between the Classic and the Modern theme on my PCLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster. It will be available in the next version of my remaster, but is also works in the current version. I have posted here the pictures of the script. I will also host the next version of my remaster on MEGA instead of FileFactory, so I won't have to split the archive and it will be easier to download! Can Trinity run in linuxmint debian edition mate 64bit?
by dr lao 09 Apr '13

Despite having virtually all of trinity installed via synaptic using wheezy edition of nightly builds repo along with dependencies without problems, I cannot get tdm to run after the initial signin despite telling debian to use tdm not mdm. And tdm is not found in the choices available in the menu of options on signin. So can somebody please write a mint-meta-debian-tde analogous to the mint-meta-debian-kde and mint-meta-debian-mate which already exist ? tia!! dr_lao

Would it be possible to package KBibTeX for Trinity?
by Jan Stolarek 27 Mar '13

I have a very humble request for Trinity developers. There's an application that used to be available for KDE3 but is not available for Trinity - KBibTeX v0.2.3. That application is essential to me at work. Lack of it for Trinity forces me to use an old linux distro with KDE3 on one of my machines so that I have access to that appliaction. Would it be possible to package KBibTeX so that it is available for Trinity? The source code for KBibTeX is available here: http://www.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/~fischer/kbibtex/download.html I will be very grateful to anyone who would be kind enough to resolve this! Janek

Trinity repository for Debian Wheezy
by Sergey Frolov 25 Mar '13

25 Mar '13

Hi everyone! I am an old KDE3/Trinity user. Following my own tradition of upgrading ~2 weeks before release I have successfully upgraded Squeeze to Wheezy. In order to minimize exposure to a 3rd-party repositories I gave a try for KDE 4.8.4 and was not impressed. While KDE received much and more neat usability tweaks, my experience with my own usual use cases was mostly frustrating. Now that I checked my options, TDE looks very competitive to a modern full-blown desktop environments. Congratulations and thank you for your effort! So, the question is: when Debian Wheezy repository (of any TDE release) will be ready? Maybe you need help to test one? I am willing to put some effort to get back to TDE by the time of Wheezy release. P.S. Here is an announcement about passing 100RC bugs milestone: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2013/03/msg00009.html Right now it's 87 and counting: http://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/other/testing.html Best Regards, Sergey.

crash, kde3, Xserver does not start any more
by Uwe Brauer 25 Mar '13

25 Mar '13

Hello I have installed Kubuntu 10.04 with trinity 3.5.11 (I think) on a X60 Thinkpad Laptop. This morning the xerver freezed and I had to reboot, I got a graphical login, could login, kde3 started, however the hard disk was in read only mode. So I rebooted again, this time it took almost 15 min to reboot, a sign that some hard disk problem occurred; (I have the jfs file system.) Anyhow finally the machine booted again successfully, I got a graphical login but now I could *NOT* login, the password was accepted but instead the graphical login screen reappeared. I could login on a terminal though. So I thought maybe the xorg.conf file was damaged. But this Kubuntu version does not have a xorg file anymore, as google told me. So what can I do? (1) sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org ??? (2) sudo X -configure? (3) sudo dexconfiure -o xorg.con?? Any help is strongly appreciated, because the only other solution it to try a _complete_ reinstall. thanks Uwe Brauer

Looking for a way to switch back to vanilla theme for the shell
by Alexandre Couture 19 Mar '13

19 Mar '13

Hello everyone!I am currently working on a Zenity script to switch between the ''Modern'' theme and the ''TDE Classic'' theme on my PcLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster. I know that many persons here prefer the classic vanilla appearance of TDE and I want to provide this option for these users. While deleting everything in the home folder and restarting the X server works and makes TDE appearance returns to default, it is a little rude and of course, delete every files of the user. Another avenue I have found is to launch ''kcmshell kthememanager'' and then, the user can select the classic of modern theme, but the user still need to select it in a list. Also, it doesn't change back to the ''Trinity Classic'' menu instead the ''KickOff'' menu. Is there a way, from the bash shell, to select a theme named ''Plastik'' in kthememanager without letting having to select it in the list in kthememanager? Also, is there a way to switch between the ''Trinity Classic'' menu and the ''KickOff'' menu from the bash shell? Thank you!-Alexandre

New install of Wheezy TDE 3.45.14 (nightlies). I have the missing *.la issue, noted previous post, for Konq. Initially I did not have 'tdm-trinity' in '/etc/init.d/' consequently not in any run levels either. I copied 'tdm-trinity' from my laptop install, updated the run levels. TDE desktop failed to start, it seems ksmserver-trinity did not get installed with the 'tdebase-trinity' meta-package I used. I was havng a hardware issue with my workstation, and replaced the root hard drive, went with the new install. It seems, esp. last month, the nightlies are not even ready for testing. There was a warning from Tim a while back about some changes. Hard for me to tell when it is safe to do an update and when and for how long to wait. I have been using the nightlies in a test environment since last summer. TDE has been usable most of that time...untill recently. -- Peace, Greg

Difficult upgrade

Hello, all. I wish I had more specific data to report but I've just had a very problematic upgrade on Debian Squeeze although it also has a number of packages installed from Wheezy. I'm not even sure which Trinity I was running beforehand - 12 or 13. I do know that, after the upgrade, I could not boot into a GUI - automatically or manually. For some reason, important packages were missing, viz., kdm-trinity, ksmserver-trinity, network-manager-kde-trinity, and a pile of their dependencies. The base Trinity packages were installed. Very strange but very painful. Again, I wish I had more specific details to report. Sorry - John

Poor Qt4 performance on Linux
by Alexandre Couture 09 Mar '13

09 Mar '13

Hi everyone! This week I've been playing with DraftSight both on Linux and on Windows. DraftSight is a Qt4 CAD drawing program that is very similar to AutoCad and it is available for free both for Windows and for Linux. I used DraftSight for many months on Linux on my Core 2 Duo with 2gb of RAM computer and it is sluggish. Each time that I select a part of the drawing to modify an attribute there is a 5-10 second delay before the program unfreeze. On my Windows-only laptop that I use mainly for running industrial automation software, I have installed DraftSight this week. This laptop is an old IBM ThinkPad A31p with a 1.7GHz Pentium 4 cpu and 512mb of RAM. It runs Windows XP. On this laptop, DraftSight runs perfectly well and there is no delay when I click on a part of a drawing, even if it is a much slower computer and the general performance of DraftSight is much better on Windows. Is there a reason why I see such a big difference between this Qt4 program on Linux and on Windows? Does the difference is because of Qt4 or it could be because DraftSight has not been ported as well as it could be? Qt3 has a very high performance and on a slow computer, it is even faster than GTK2. The UI element are drawn faster than almost every other GUI toolkits. Why does QT4 still suffer from these performance issues? Have an happy spring break! -Alexandre

Preparing updates for 3.5.13
by Slávek Banko 03 Mar '13

03 Mar '13

Hello everyone, Since the last announcement was incorporated a second set of patches for a future release 3.5.13.2. Those who continue to use my PPA probably already have the update installed. I expect that the final version 3.5.13.2 would be in the second half of March. Here is a detailed list of backported patches: http://www.trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Documentation/Releases_3_5_13_2… I note that there are also available packages for Ubuntu Quantal (12.10) and Debian Wheezy (7.0): https://quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/~slavek-banko/+archive/axis/+packag… https://quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/~slavek-banko/+archive/axis/+packag… Please test it :) Comments and suggestions welcome. YaST2 launch failure
by Leslie Turriff 26 Feb '13

26 Feb '13

Now that I've gotten Trinity working on my OpenSuSE 12.2 system, I find that starting YaST from the menu no longer works. The command string in the Application tab of the button configuration is "/usr/bin/xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2". When I cut/paste that into konsole and run it I get this message: xdg-su: no graphical method available for invoking '/sbin/yast2' as 'root' which means nothing at all to me. :-) Any suggestions? K menu organization in Trinity
by Alexandre Couture 26 Feb '13

26 Feb '13

Hi everyone! First of all, I would like to say a big thank you to the persons making Trinity possible! In PCLinuxOS, between different window manager and desktop environment, the layout of how apps are classified is very similar, while Trinity has its own apps classification, which is the same as KDE3. Debian also has an apps classification that is common across almost all WM and DE. I have seen somewhere that the next release of TDE will be freedesktop.org compliant. Does it means that TDE will adopt this new way of organizing apps? I would like to say that I prefer the new method of organizing the K menu than the one used in TDE. As an example, let's look at these 3 menu sub-levels: System, Utilities and Settings. These categories are almost overlapping in each other and it ends up that something that would be better placed in Settings ends up being in System or in Utilities. For this reason, I prefer to use the KickOff menu instead of the classic menu in Trinity, because I just have to type the name of the program I want to start in the search bar at the top, and it ends up being faster than trying to find where is the program I want to start. Of course, the new way of menu classification is not 100% perfect, but I would say that, in my opinion, has made it a little more simple to use. Would it be a good idea to make an option in the menu configuration program to let the users choose between the Trinity way of organizing the K menu (as in KDE3) and the new way of organizing the K menu (as in KDE4 and all the others DE and WM)? So, what do you think about it? Have a nice day! -Alexandre

remote keyboard shift key not working
by Mike Lambert 22 Feb '13

22 Feb '13

Trinity Release 3.5.13.1 Remote (vnc) keyboard shift key does not work. Specifically, when connected to Trinity krfb from any remote vnc client, the shift key does not work, except with the 9 (nine) 0 (zero) and , (comma) keys. This renders remote vnc sessions nearly useless. The bug that I am seeing appears to be identical to that described in this debian bug report: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=595283 See also the referenced kde bug report: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=182073 What are the chances that this can be fixed in Trinity? -Mike, happy Trinity user, except when connected remotely

Precise/amd64, TDE 3.5.13.1, firefox (and other) problems
by Peter Laws 22 Feb '13

22 Feb '13

No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Release: 12.04 Codename: precise ii kdebase-trinity 4:3.5.13-1ubuntu0+ax3~precise base components from the official KDE release ii firefox 18.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.3 Safe and easy web browser from Mozilla Patches are all up to date as of this morning (about 1700 UTC). In firefox, a number of dialog boxes ... maybe all of them ... that involve saving a file or browsing for a file are broken. Example: I need Google Chrome for a site that won't work with anything else. The repo line I found is out of date, so I went to their install website. Selected 64-bit deb, get the download dialog, click OK, then nothing. Never shows up no matter whether I accept the default path or change it. Website reacts like it got the "OK, I'm done signal" and progresses to the next page. I thought maybe it was that old problem that was worked around by using the LD_PRELOAD hack, but no (nor renaming /opt/trinity/share/kgtk/preload). Thought they were worth a try before posting. Eclipse and gtk-qt-application crash
by Patricia J. Hawkins 12 Feb '13

12 Feb '13

Hi all, I'm running trinity oneiric I'm trying to run the Eclipse android sdk, and am getting the same problems others have gotten: pjh@pjh-laptop:~/bin/android-sdks/tools$ android sdk KCrash: crashing... crashRecursionCounter = 2 KCrash: Application Name = gtk-qt-application path = <unknown> pid = 5812 Segmentation fault Eclipse itself runs fine. This is a new installation of eclipse. I've tried uninstalling kgtk-qt3-trinity and rebooting, but that doesn't help. The directory /opt/trinity/lib/kgtk/ is definitely gone, as is libkgtk2.so -- "sudo find /lib /opt /usr -name libkgtk2\* -print" turns up nothing. I would not have a problem with upgrading if that would help. Any suggestions? -- Patricia J. Hawkins

Cannot login using Trinity kdm on openSuSE 12.2
by J. Leslie Turriff 09 Feb '13

09 Feb '13

Hi, I installed Trinity in my openSuSE 12.2 on X86_64, using the instructions on your website. With DISPLAYMANAGER="/opt/trinity/bin/kdm" in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and DEFAULT_WM="kdm" in /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager, booting the system displays the Trinity login prompt, but when I enter my username and password, the display just blinks and refreshes the password field. I have looked in /var/log/messages, /var/log/warn, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, xdm.errors and kdm.log, but the only suspicious items I see are in kdm.log: QWidget::setMinimumSize: The smallest allowed size is (0,0) QWidget::setMaximumSize: (unnamed/QDialog) Negative sizes (-1,-1) are not possible Feb 8 13:39:24 kdm_greet[28323] error: Can't open default user face QImage::convertDepth: Image is a null image QImage::smoothScale: Image is a null image Perhaps one or more of these is causing the issue? Any suggestions on how to proceed are welcome. Leslie

Quoting Alexandre Couture : Hi! I don't know if you really need to use TDM, but as I had issues at some points with TDM on my PCLOS remaster, I installed GDM (Gnome display manager) and it worked right as it should and makes no difference once Trinity is started. Even if it's not what you want at first, it might be a good way to troubleshoot if the rest of Trinity has installed as it should. Have a nice day! -Alexandre Alexandre, I am able to login using xdm fine; it's just TDM that's not working, as far as I can tell. xdm works with twm and icewm, but TDM does not work with either of them, so I'm pretty sure that there's something wrong with the Trinity setup. I suspect that the absence of /etc/trinity probably has something to do with it, but I don't know what is supposed to be in it. Leslie

Just two question about icon positions: .trinity/share/apps/kdesktop/IconPositions: [IconPosition::mypaint.desktop] Xabs=74 Xabs_1024x768=21 Xabs_1280x800=20 Xabs_1920x1200=74 Xabs_800x600=111 Yabs=487 Yabs_1024x768=437 Yabs_1280x800=715 Yabs_1920x1200=487 Yabs_800x600=348 Does this mean, TDE can handle different icon positions according to the current screen resolution? If yes, are the positions in this file used when the resolution changes (xrandr) or only whe TDE starts? Nik

PCLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster version 2013, January 15 ready to download!
by Alexandre Couture 04 Feb '13

04 Feb '13

Hello everyone! My PCLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster version 2013, January 15 is ready to download! ***Please note that if you already use the previous version of this remaster, and you have followed the procedures to enable the new PCLOS repos as I said in my message titled ''Important note for PCLOS TDE remaster users'', you already have the new version. PCLOS is a rolling release.*** I call it non-official because it doesn't come from the PCLOS team and since it contains software coming from outside of their repos, it is also not supported by them. It can be seen as a whole as the much-loved PCLOS 2007, but fully updated and upgraded. It is a complete system that can be used as a LiveDVD or it can be installed (from the LiveDVD). Major apps pre-installed (in no special order): -PCLinuxOS 2013 (completely updated) base system with KDE stripped out and replaced by TDE 3.5.13.1 -KFaenza as the default icon theme instead of Oxygen -Most systems libs are completely updated since the last release -Amarok -K3b -Firefox 18 -Dillo -Dolphin -Konqueror -LibreOffice 3.6 -Quanta plus -VirtualBox -SuperKaramba -Synaptic -VLC media player 2.0.6 -Kaffeine -BleachBit -GParted -QtCurve theme -Baghira theme -The GIMP -QCad -Kontact (Note: I couldn't test completely Kmail, but it seems to work. If it is not good enough, Thunderbird is also pre-installed) -Mozilla Thunderbird -Skype -KMyMoney -P7Zip -All PCLinuxOS regular configuration apps (Most admin tasks should be done from the PCLOS Control Center) -Localisation Manager, to translate your system -LibreOffice Manager Login info (on the LiveCD): Regular user:guest Password:guest Super user: root Password:root System requirement: A x86 computer with at least 256mb of RAM. It is a 32bit system, but it can be installed on a 64bit system too. It is available in a 4-parts zip archive. (Please note that Ark doesn't support muti-part archives, so use another decompression app.) http://www.filefactory.com/file/6ofocsyy5fmh/Readme_First.pdf http://www.filefactory.com/file/1cq80reklobr/PCLinuxOS_TDE_nonofficial_15ja… http://www.filefactory.com/file/zr7wx0u3az9/PCLinuxOS_TDE_nonofficial_15jan… http://www.filefactory.com/file/5gzb2s0fik0b/PCLinuxOS_TDE_nonofficial_15ja… http://www.filefactory.com/file/64ag7nu0wpy9/PCLinuxOS_TDE_nonofficial_15ja… Oops, a little mistake: 15Jan2013 should be read instead of 15Jan2012... I won't re-upload my file for that :) Md5Sum: 1bafb54959a7580613029dec0e0d23f1 It would be very appreciated if someone can host the .iso file in a mirror! ***The previous version should be removed from the mirror because they don't use the new repos of PCLOS and they won't update as they should without further modifications. This new ISO contains the required modification.*** If you like what you see, you can consider giving some money to the Trinity Desktop Environment project! Give me your comments! -Alexandre

Important note for those who use PCLinuxOS 2012 non-official TDE remaster
by Alexandre Couture 29 Jan '13

29 Jan '13

Hello everyone! First of all, I want to thank everyone here who use my PCLinuxOS 20112 non-official TDE remaster. Due to some important changes in the structures of the repositories used by PCLinuxOS, you should check the following link to know what you should do to keep Synaptic (and apt-get) working as it should: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,87378.msg722604.html#msg7226… This news announcement is also on the main page of the projet: http://www.pclinuxos.org I will also try to do a fully-updated ISO of my remaster in the next weeks. This ISO will replace the present one and will have the changes integrated to the repos already installed. I know that TDE 3.5.13.2 is coming, but it will probably still be based on 3.5.13.1, until the new packages are released and packaged for PCLOS. Thank you everyone here for your hard work on making this project possible! -Alexandre

themes broken?
by David Emerson 27 Jan '13

27 Jan '13

I upgraded kdm-trinity from: 3.5.13-0debian9+r1261450+pr19~squeeze to: 3.5.13-1debian0+ax3~squeeze and also, kdmtheme-trinity from: 3.5.13-0debian9+r1248408+pr1~squeeze to: 3.5.13-1debian0+ax1~squeeze And now themes do not seem to be working at all. I also noticed that the rather long and profusely commented /etc/trinity/kdm/kdmrc was overwritten by kcontrol in admin mode when changing themes Any suggestions for making themes work again? Thanks! openSUSE 12.2 lockup starting DM after exiting startx
by Felix Miata 25 Jan '13

25 Jan '13

I've a bunch of systems with OS 12.2, but only one or two with TDE. On the one currently wired up, which uses sysvinit-init instead of systemd init, I normally boot to runlevel 3, same as on most of my systems. If as normal user I do startx -- :1, exit TDE, and then switch to runlevel 5, the system quickly locks up completely, and puts the display in sleep mode. IIRC, this doesn't happen on KDE3 or KDE4 systems. :-( Where in the world does one begin to try to figure out the cause? Mirror site for Slavek's stuff?
by russell＠lls.lls.com 18 Jan '13

18 Jan '13

Perhaps it's just me but the bandwidth for http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/slavek-banko/axis/ubuntu/ seems errr.... challenged? :-) I've just done an apt-get update and I'm seeing download speeds of a few 10's of kB from pearsoncomputing.net and and estimated time of hours. This seems to be the norm and not network congestion at my end as the stuff from the debian repositories in the same 'apt-get run' came down the pipe at normal speeds. Is there a mirror that might be better connected? I've looked at the mirrors listed on http://trinitydesktop.org/contributors.php#contentdistribution but they don't seem to have slavek's stuff. If there isn't a mirror.... I have capacity on a server in a datacenter in Germany and could host a mirror (the server in question is a backup and just sits there ticking over 99.99% of the time). -- Regards, Russell -------------------------------------------------------------------- | Russell Brown | MAIL: russell(a)lls.com PHONE: 01780 471800 | | Lady Lodge Systems | WWW Work: http://www.lls.com | | Peterborough, England | WWW Play: http://www.ruffle.me.uk | --------------------------------------------------------------------

kdesktop-trinity & wheezy
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 17 Jan '13

17 Jan '13

Hi all, I just ran into a bad problem with kdesktop-trinity on wheezy. After "apt-get dist-upgrade" I had no working tde anymore. binutils<2.20.2 are required, but wheezy has since some weeks 2.22-7.1, which shows up in the middle of the upgrade process :-( Ok, I modified "kdesktop-trinity" to accept binutils <2.30.2 and finished installation. However, my session came up as usually but right after initialization it shut down again. Looking closer I found only "kdesktop_lock" is linked to "libbfd-2.20.1" which comes from binutils-2.20.1. Replacing "kdesktop_lock" with a stub brought up TDE as expected. Did anybody else run into that problem, too? Nik

So far, I've: 1. downloaded the following packages: kpdf-trinity_3.5.13-0debian9+r1258283+pr3~squeeze_amd64.deb kdelibs4c2a-trinity_3.5.13-0debian9+r1261449+pr12~squeeze_amd64.deb libtqtinterface_3.5.13-0debian9+r1258011+pr2~squeeze_amd64.deb libqt3-mt_3.3.8d-0ubuntu0+sr73+pr181~squeeze_amd64.deb 2. extracted them using =dpkg-deb -x=: this creates ./usr, ./opt/trinity, etc. 3. tryed to run kpdf: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$(find opt/trinity/lib usr/lib -type d | xargs echo | sed "s; ;:;g") opt/trinity/bin/kpdf this sets LD_LIBRARY_PATH=opt/trinity/lib:opt/trinity/lib/mime:opt/trinity/lib/mime/packages:opt/trinity/lib/trinity:\ opt/trinity/lib/trinity/plugins:opt/trinity/lib/trinity/plugins/styles:\ opt/trinity/lib/trinity/plugins/designer:usr/lib:usr/lib/pkgconfig:\ usr/lib/qt3:usr/lib/qt3/plugins:usr/lib/qt3/plugins/inputmethods:\ usr/lib/qt3/plugins/imageformats In the end, kpdf is running but: 1. I throws many errors a start time: 1. complains about dcop server being absent: can I skip this? I found nothing relevant in the kpdf man page 2. could not find mime type "application octet-stream", seems to be related to 3. then says "no mime types installed" 2. file and edit menus have "No text!" names. I guess I can figure out why because kpdf is missing its files (i.e., there's no /opt/trinity/share/apps/kpdfpart/part.rc et al. in the kpdf scope), but I don't know how to fix it. Note that I copied ~/.trinity/share/apps/kpdfpart/part.rc. I'd be glad if someone has the willing to help me polishing this! I really miss kpdf at work! Thank you, Nicolas PS: Would it be possible to install and run parts of trinity from a fakeroot env?

Checking available new packages updates

Hi All, Can someone tell me how to check, from TDE, if there are new packages available for updating (especially XWindows)? I only see the hermetic "kpackage" in my installation. Should I go in gnome to check-update packages? thank you

Hi All, If I lauch GE from a Konsol, it gives: /opt/google/earth/free/google-earth: ./googleearth-bin: /lib/ld-lsb.so.3: bad ELF interpreter: Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type During some previous installation tryes, I sow that the problem was coming from a library requested by a component of Trinity. Can someone tell me, please, how to do to be able to run Google Earth, while using TDE as windows manager? Thank you Patrick

Migration to F16-Trinity_Konqueror

Hi All, I think that there is a problem while expanding sélection of files in Konqueror. Ctrl+"left"click add the clicked file, Shift+"left"click expends the sélection with all the files between the previously clicked file to the clicked file. It should work like in the mails section of the main KMail window, should'nt it? So, is it settable feature or a bug? Thank you Patrick
