Help on help-list
by Patrick Serru 09 Jan '13

09 Jan '13

Hi all, I post a lot of requests for assistance on this list, but got few answers. A developer can tell if the observations at the origin of requests (possible bugs), ot the questions themself are followed by effects within the TDE team or other groups of developers? In other words: is it useful if I waste my time sending smoke signals on this list??? <troll> How dreamer I am! In 199x, I dreamed that the beginning of the end of Windows would be in 2000, replaced by Linux. But maybe next year... :-) My recent experiences show me that Linux is far from convincing the current Windows users to join. TDE is (for me) the best desktop alternative, but there are so many installation problems! My recent experiences show me that Linux is far from convincing the current Windows users to join. </troll> Thank you Patrick

Review of Trinity in Linux Format
by ant 08 Jan '13

08 Jan '13

You may be interested to know that Linux Format magazine January 2013 issue (number 166) has a (generally) very positive review of Trinity compared to four other desktops. Finishes with: " a note-perfect reimplementation of KDE 3 ... full of features ...looks good ... tons of software ... . If you don't think you like KDE, try Trinity and there's a good chance it will change your mind." cheers ant -- Sent from my linux system running Debian 6, desktop trinity-KDE. kmail issue Wheezy nightly builds
by Greg Madden 08 Jan '13

08 Jan '13

Debian Wheezy, TDE nightly builds Kmail/Kontact starts ok. When I use the 'configure Kmail' in the Settings menu Kmail dissappears, no warnings, crash reports. I can setup Kmail using the 'configure Kontact', Kmail section, tool. No Kcrash reports but I get this from a terminal: kmail: symbol lookup error: /opt/trinity/lib/libkmailprivate.so: undefined symbol: _ZN13KCMultiDialog9addModuleERK8TQStringb -- Peace, Greg

Bug report in TDE general UI and in K3B
by Alexandre Couture 06 Jan '13

06 Jan '13

Hi everyone, On TDE 3.5.13.1, when I go in a open/save file dialog, if i move between the files with the arrows on the keyboard, some items are always jumped, and when you press the down arrow and the highlighted file is the last in that column, depending on the files in that directory, it either go on the next column, as it should or it go to the top of the same column. I know that some persons will say that it is just a small papercut bug, but it wasn't present in KDE 3.5.x Also, when I want to create an audio CD from mp3 file in K3b, when I drag the mp3 file in the lower part of the screen, where the songs goes, I get an error message saying: ''Problems while adding files to the project.'' ''Unable to handle the following files due to an unsupported format'' Then, it says that I could go in another program to convert the files in WAV manually before adding them to K3B. This bug doesn't exist in KDE (3.x.x and 4.x.x) and I remember very well using this function of K3B back in 2006-2007, on KDE. The necessary codecs are installed and the bug can be reproduced very easily on my PCLOS livecd available on this website. It looks like a small papercut bug, but it is something that block me from using TDE on my main computer and in my opinion, K3B is the best burning app on linux, so using another program is not much an option here. Thank you in advance for your hard work on TDE! -Alexandre

Preparing updates for 3.5.13
by Slávek Banko 05 Jan '13

05 Jan '13

Hello everyone, since the release 3.5.13.1 enough time has elapsed, and so we have included the first set of patches for a future release 3.5.13.2. Final version release date is not yet determined. Those who continue to use my PPA probably already have the update installed. Here is a detailed list of backported patches: http://www.trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Documentation/Releases_3_5_13_2… Along with the update packages I also again expanded the number of supported distributions for stable branch - after earlier announced Ubuntu Quantal now are also available packages for Debian Wheezy. https://quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/~slavek-banko/+archive/axis/+packag… https://quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/~slavek-banko/+archive/axis/+packag… Please test it :) Comments and suggestions welcome. Happy New Year to you wishes Slavek --

Icon themes for TDE
by Alexandre Couture 05 Jan '13

05 Jan '13

Hi everyone! I wanted to share 2 icon themes for updating the look of TDE: -Crystal SVG Updated http://www.filefactory.com/file/2sm4lju0j1ap/n/crystalsvg_zip This icon theme comes from PCLOS MiniME 2008 (KDE 3.5.x). I don't know if it is an official update of the old Crystal SVG or a theme made by the PCLOS team, but it is a more modern version of it. -Oxygen for KDE3 http://www.filefactory.com/file/5w394u74iua9/n/oxy-tde_zip This is the theme used in my PCLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster. It comes from kde-look.org I personally think that keeping the old Crystal SVG theme as the default theme is not good for the TDE project. The people who haven't used TDE will think that it is always the same old project as KDE3. It just looks too old and of course, the more actual Oxygen icon theme will go this way one day or another, but as of now, I think that it would be a good idea for TDE to use Oxygen or another icon theme, at least this updated version of Crystal SVG. The same idea goes with the general theme. We aren't used to the ''vanilla KDE 3.5.10'' these days. Themes with big lines separating GUI elements aren't used anymore and even during the KDE 3.5.x days, almost no distros used the default theme. This is just my personal opinion... -Alexandre

Trinity 3.5.11 to 3.5.13
by Marvin L Jones 04 Jan '13

04 Jan '13

I've been running Ubuntu 10.04/Trinity -- all fat, dumb, and happy. Especially happy. Now, while poking around at http://www.trinitydesktop.org/ I see I should be/could be using Trinity v3.5.13. I'm not. I'm running Trinty 3.5.11. sigh... My apt sources: : |$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kde3-maintainers.list |# KDE3 repositories | |deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu lucid main |deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu lucid main The http://www.trinitydesktop.org/ apt sources list for 10.04/Lucid contains: deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu lucid main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu lucid main deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.1… lucid main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.1… lucid main So , is it enough to change my /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kde3-maintainers.list file to the trinity-v3.5.13 sources and apt-get update/upgrade? Or, will I snafu my nicely running system? Are there any gotchas? Or, do I have to upgrade through trinity-v3.5.12 first -- somehow? settings for a 1024x768 monitor that Trinity insists on recognising as 800x600.
by Lisi Reisz 04 Jan '13

04 Jan '13

The main problem at the moment is that I cannot set up KMail because I can't get at the bottom of the window. :-( It is the first time that I have used dvi-d and the Iiyama Prolite E431S has heretofore been recognised well in VGA. I obviously need an x-org file, but am not sure how to achieve this at this stage. TDE 3.5.13.2 on Squeeze, just finished installing and am trying to set it up. NVIDIA GTX 650Ti 1GB Graphics Card. Nouveau is installed. As a pro-tem measure, can anyone remind me how to move a window above the top of the monitor so that I can get at the bottom and click "apply"? :-( Thanks, Lisi

Slávec's tde-3.5.13.1-ubuntu-12.04.1
by Patrick Serru 04 Jan '13

04 Jan '13

Happy New Year to all Thank you, Slavek, for this beautiful Christmas gift that was the "tde-3.5.13.1-ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso". Everyone will have read some bitterness in my reports on the using TDE / Fedora17. I only have good things to say (until now) on installing from the CD Trinity and its operation, until the closing session window, with it's TDE icone! I even thought that I would start my everyday "Oss 11.1" with the Grub freshly installed! But that dream was too deep! So no screen definition problem / unstability ( /-: but I have booted only once). I will probably inhibit SeLinux as soon as possible. With Fedora, things have been much improved after the system updates. But with Ubuntu-12/TDE, I have not found the graphical update tools, the name of which I've forgotten, in the "10.10 TDE enterprise". It seems to me that there were several of these tools. Do I have to do these updates, before continuing migration? Thank you, Slavek, for working on TDE. Patrick Oups: Sent yestuday to trinity-announce at lists.pearsoncomputing.net

Text with icons on KMail toolbar. Squeeze + TDE 3.5.13.2
by Lisi Reisz 02 Jan '13

02 Jan '13

Happy New Year, all! A few months ago I saw that it was possible to put text with the icons on the KMail toolbar and breathed a sigh of relief. I could at last move my husband from Icedove (Thunderbird) to KMail, without being cruel to him, and my life would get a whole lot easier. I could finally have him on Maildir not Mbox and could remove the viruses he loves downloading, without destroying half his email. He downloads viruses with gay abandon, and whilst they do not hurt him, he has Windows using friends. I am about to set his new computer up. I am looking at things on my computer to refresh my memory. And the text has disappeared again! I am really sad about this. Does anyone know where it has disappeared to or where I ought to be looking? I hope that the problem is PEBKAC, and thus easily solved with your help. It is KMail 1.9.10 on TDE 3.5.13.2. Please help! I can't face another eternity of trying to protect his friends from viruses on Icedove. I tend to get cowardly and not run a virus check. :-( I have Googled and Googled. I have been Googling for a week or two. :-( He is away, and I want to have it set up properly for him when he gets home on Thursday. Thanks, Lisi P.S. I once found seven little .exe files sitting in his home directory doing nothing!! They were easy to delete. :-)

Problems with Firefox 16.0.2
by Jeff Taylor 02 Jan '13

02 Jan '13

Since installing the recent update to FF 16.0.2, I have been having constant issues. Sometimes as often as 3-4 times a day (other times it works ok for a couple of days at a time), FF will appear as though it has lost all access to the internet. Any tabs that I try to reload will just sit there and spin. 'Top' does not show any processes running out of control, and if I close and restart FF, everything works normally. I have not noticed any pattern to the sites I'm visiting when it stops working. It does not appear to be related to flash content, and sometimes I come back to my computer to see it stuck trying to reload a page, so it appears to lose its connection even when not being actively used. I do not have any proxies or other special setting for my network - it's just a straight connection to the local LAN. I had assumed it was just my computer, but today my wife informed me that she has also been having the same problems for the past week. Both systems are running Ubuntu 11.04 (natty), and all updates have been applied. I can't really work from a new profile because I need my bookmarks and plugins for daily work, and as I mentioned this problem does not immediately show up. However if anyone has other suggestions that I could look into, or if you have run across any other threads from people having similar problems, please let me know.

I assume you showed the Debian Squeeze repositories by mistake. So, I trimmed back the URLs, looked around, and went with: deb http://depot-trinity.dotriver.eu/trinity/ubuntu lucid main deb http://depot-trinity.dotriver.eu/trinity-builddeps/ubuntu lucid main However: Err http://depot-trinity.dotriver.eu lucid/main Packages 404 Not Found Fetched 22.4kB in 2s (11.1kB/s) W: Failed to fetch http://depot-trinity.dotriver.eu/trinity-builddeps/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/… 404 Not Found There is no "/lucid/" under .../trinity-builddeps/ubuntu/dists/ But, there is a "/lenny/", as in: http://depot-trinity.dotriver.eu/trinity-builddeps/ubuntu/dists/lenny/... Very strange. Is there a sub-dirextory naming error there? Would using: deb http://depot-trinity.dotriver.eu/trinity/ubuntu lucid main deb http://depot-trinity.dotriver.eu/trinity-builddeps/ubuntu lenny main be a Real Ugly Hack to proceed? >Or upgrade from 3.5.11 straight to 3.5.13.x. >This would not be a problem. I was afraid that _would_ cause me problems. But having an existing, local desktop Ubuntu 10.04 with Trinity 3.5.13.2 gives me (maybe) the ability to fix any strange problems that might appear -- if I have to give up trying to upgrade to Trinity 3.5.12 Thank you. I am looking for an explanation of that "lenny"... Happy New Year! Jonesy

Storage Media list in Dolphin
by Alexandre Couture 29 Dec '12

29 Dec '12

Hi everyone! Anyone who have tried my LiveCD would have seen that when you click on ''Storage media'' in Dolphin, you have to click on refresh to see the list of the drives you can mount. Also, if I do a ''safely remove'' on a usb key, I have to click on refresh to see the drive as unmounted. Ok, I'll admit that there is more important problems than this in the world, but It would be nice to have a kind of auto-refresh in that window. Is this problem caused by the underlying changes in Linux (with DBUS, UMOUNT, HAL, ...) or it is just a small problem in Dolphin? Does the next release of TDE will get better support for that? Happy New Year! -Alexandre

TDE and Wheezy
by Lisi Reisz 29 Dec '12

29 Dec '12

I am just about to install Debian and TDE on my husband's birthday present box. He is quite clear that he wants Squeeze. He likes stability and would rather have a reinstallation in the not too distant future than have something not called Stable. And he hates change! But not even the prospect of being left in peace far longer could tempt him into Wheezy. Moreover, he is adamant that he likes KDE 3 best. (I have given him various environments to try.) BUT - I'm the one doing it! If I can present him with a stable box, even if not a Stable one, he will be happy. So - how stable is Wheezy with TDE 3.5.14 nightly builds? I get the impression not quite. But using Squeeze means opening the box and putting an extra network card in in order to be able to install it. (Or anything else with a kernel < 2.6.34.) I just want to be quite sure in my mind that Wheezy won't yet do, before I start opening boxen. Thanks . Lisi

Hi Alexandre, I've now got your live CD installed on my machine... I'm quite impressed though I do seem to have moments of very odd behaviour. For instance I used "Network Center" to disconnect my wired ethernet prior to doing some other things. But didn't reconnect before I shut the machine down. Starting the machine up this evening I discover that I now have "Dolphin" started up and three instances of "Gkrellm" all on the same desktop. Most curious ! Things work mostly as I expect. Good work. Thankyou for sharing. Sent from Trinity Kmail on PCLOS -- Best Regards: Baron

installing trinity on wheezy.
by Calvin Morrison 27 Dec '12

27 Dec '12

Hi, I am having trouble installing trinity on wheezy. I tried adding the sources for sqeeze to my /etc/apt/sources.list but that did not work because of dependency problems. I then changed those lines from squeeze to wheezy. Unfortunately that only worked half way. There is no build-deps built for wheezy available so I removed those lines. When I try and install kdebase-trinity it does not find the package. My /etc/apt/sources.list looks like this: deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/debianwh… main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/debianwh… main deb http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/ wheezy main non-free contrib deb-src http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/ wheezy main non-free contrib deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free Any ideas? Massive update
by Marvin L Jones 25 Dec '12

I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 with Slavec's Trinity 3.5.11.1 backport repositories. For some time now -- since the 'official' release of 3.5.11.1 -- I've only been seeing Ubuntu updates. There has been no Trinity updates. I've been meaning to ask here what I should've done to move to the more 'official' Trinity repositories. PcLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster release ready to download!
by Alexandre Couture 19 Dec '12

19 Dec '12

Hello everyone! My PCLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster is ready to download! I call it non-official because it doesn't come from the PCLOS team and since it contains software coming from outside of their repos, it is also not supported by them. It can be seen as a whole as the much-loved PCLOS 2007, but fully updated and upgraded. It is a complete system that can be used as a LiveDVD or it can be installed (from the LiveDVD). Major apps pre-installed (in no special order): -PCLinuxOS 2012 base system with KDE 4.8 stripped out and replaced by TDE 3.5.13.1 -Amarok -K3b -Firefox -Dolphin -Konqueror -LibreOffice -Quanta plus -VirtualBox -SuperKaramba -Synaptic -VLC media player -Kaffeine -BleachBit -GParted -QtCurve theme -Baghira theme -The GIMP -QCad -Kontact -Skype -KMyMoney -P7Zip -All PCLinuxOS regular configuration apps -Localisation Manager, to translate your system -LibreOffice Manager System requirement: A x86 computer with at least 256mb of RAM. It is a 32bit system, but it can be installed on a 64bit system too. It is available in a 4-parts zip archive. (Please note that Ark doesn't support muti-part archives, so use another decompression app.) http://www.filefactory.com/file/6ofocsyy5fmh/Readme_First.pdf http://www.filefactory.com/file/4888f7njxdsp/Md5_sum.txt http://www.filefactory.com/file/6bpff7km3nrh/tde_pclos_nonofficial_25nov201… http://www.filefactory.com/file/1kwsx39htb53/tde_pclos_nonofficial_25nov201… http://www.filefactory.com/file/6bpmoz5mhup9/tde_pclos_nonofficial_25nov201… http://www.filefactory.com/file/c15yohy7k6v/tde_pclos_nonofficial_25nov2012… It would be very appreciated if someone can host the .iso file in a mirror! Fedora17 + Trinity usage repport
by Patrick Serru 17 Dec '12

17 Dec '12

Hi all, The display is very "unstable", and I have, from time to time to reconfigure the display at 1280x1024. I guess the problem comes from XOrg. Sometimes there are one or two small windows indicating changes in definitions, but it is incomprehensible, at least because they overlap (!). Problems related to the BIOS and memory usage, if I understood correctly, previously caused the message "Press Ctrl + D to continue" in console during the system start. If I remenber correctly, the kernel (?) said that there was some cheksumm error or so, in the block of memory. I just had now, after a soft restart, to press the hardware "Reset" button (cold reset) to get out of an endless "memory dump", in the console... The "Instability" on the definition of the display may come from there, too, because the hot reset does not give the same results as the cold reset. I am ready to believe that Grub2 is (again) involved. I looked phosphorus savers unnecessary for LCD screens, but fun to watch, a little. I noted that they speak of KDE in "Banner", the default saver, and "Fireworks" (if I'm not mistaken). After selecting Atlantis (Open GL), I had to press the "Reset" button on my machine to get out of the situation. Is it a lack of patience? Too bad "Ctrl + Alt + Backspace" has been removed for safety reasons, and that any other possibility to kill X no longer available without disconnecting the computer. A look at SysGard: I did not find the CPU temperature sensor... Regarding the language used, the applications of "current" user are in english. Only "Root" applications are in French. I wanted to try to run: yum install trinity-i18n-French as simple user, but of course I did not have the rights, while SELinux is still "disabled". Surprised to see a different graphic "style" in a window, I investigated and found that it was a Nautilus window. I did not know Nautilus: it is the "Finder" of Gnome! I do not remember how this window had been opened. There is an icon in the closing Trinity window. This icon is KDE's. There's about a second between the graphical opening of a dialogue and the associated KDE sound! What should I do for the "Via8237" (in my case) to be selected instead of "Pulse Audio", in kmix? Cheers Patrick

[trinity-users] Fedora 17 or TDE bug repport 2++
by Patrick Serru 14 Dec '12

14 Dec '12

Hi All, I'm french (nobody's perfect), living in Peru and using usually a Spanish keyboard, with a french "writing" system. For historical reasons, the marking of my keyboard is U.S., and this is a chance in the case of this bug, because, at the time of the "login" (with Gnome, see previous post), the system interprets the keyboard as U.S.! Network configuration does not work. I tried kcmshell [kdeinit] kcm_knetworkconfmodule in a super-user console, but after validation, a dialog asking to wait opened, and the situation was infinitly fixed. Now, I have no network. Hence the question: how does one configure the network from Trinity, a console and / or from Gnome with Fedora? Note that I did not re-boot after this problem, so, I dont know if the network configuration is definitively lost. More general problems: At the time selinux was still anabled on the targeted system, I tryed some "sudo" commands, and it did not work because "user is not sudoers". How a user that comes from WindOverDose or did never study the use of selinux can react to this message? I guess each of you, dear ADVANCED users, had been confronted to a ALMOST functional system, at the "boot" of a 2.6.33.x kernel (ie). Investigating, you discovered that it was because the kernel can not insert modules of a system 2.6.26.x (ie)... I feel that this is the case Grub2! I guess Grub2 loads a kernel (the one of his host system probably) then made his small business to finally boot which corresponds to the user's selection. Booting without removing the old kernel. I suppose that because Grub2 only starts the host system it is installed in! It is then ridiculous, when installing a distribution, to scan all disks and all partitions, for offering to start (linux) systems that they contain! Imagine the frustration of a user who can not re-boot the system he use everyday! Luckily, I boot my everyday Oss 11.1 system from a CD. There is a more general congruency Linux problem: why the shell does not interpret "media:/whatever/whatever"? More generaly, I have some doubts: is there a developer that use the systems on which he works for everyday? Please, note that until here, (I think that) the testing on a virtual system does not help developpers to see these problems... I have not managed to transfer all my mails from KMail 3.5.10 release 21.13.1 to TDE 3.5.13. Could someone help, please? Did I dream ??? Konqueror being open on "a hard disk / partition", that is to say, URL display beginning with "media:", the hidden directory ".Mail" was not reflected in the list while the directories named ".m*" (as ".mozilla", for example), appeared! This was not the case for a Konqueror window with URL displaying "/home/user", for example. There were true questions in this post: - how does one configure the network from Trinity, a console and / or from Gnome with Fedora? - Is there someone that could help me transfering mails from KMail 3.5.10 release 21.13.1 to KMail TDE 3.5.13? Thank you. Cheers, Patrick

Fedora 17 or TDE bug repport
by Patrick Serru 14 Dec '12

Hi All, Fedora 17 + TDE user. I created the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop, with the line: DISPLAYMANAGER=/opt/trinity/bin/kdm The login window was represented 800x600 pixels (or less) and once completed, it is Gnome that was executed with the correct screen resolution (1280x1024). Whereas without this line, I have the choice between Gnome and Tde. Once in Tde, TDE seems to function almost normally. Cheers Patrick --- fr ------------------------- Utilisateur Fedora 17 + TDE. themes broken?

I just upgraded kdm-trinity from: 3.5.13-0debian9+r1261450+pr19~squeeze to: 3.5.13-1debian0+ax3~squeeze and also, kdmtheme-trinity from: 3.5.13-0debian9+r1248408+pr1~squeeze to: 3.5.13-1debian0+ax1~squeeze And now themes do not seem to be working at all. I also noticed that the rather long and profusely commented /etc/trinity/kdm/kdmrc was overwritten by kcontrol in admin mode when changing themes Any suggestions for making themes work again? Thanks! TDE website update
by Alexandre Couture 13 Dec '12

13 Dec '12

Hello everyone, If someone here have some time for it, it would be nice if the TDE packages repo of François Andriot could be added to the front page of the website. These packages are perfectly stable. Also, I can resend back the screenshots of my PCLOS TDE remaster in a less compressed way so that they could be added to the screenshot section of the site, if it is considered good enough quality for that. These screenshots can be seen in the November page of this mailing list. If my PCLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster is considered good enough to be a day-to-day system, as I use it, then it might be good for the Trinity Desktop Environment project to have a link for it (and the Fedora CD too) when you click on the ''Try a liveCD today'' link on the website. The Fedora CD is great, but is is more a LiveCD to try TDE than a fully-fledged desktop system. Thank you! -Alexandre

Migrating from openSUSE KDE3 to TDE
by Leslie Turriff 09 Dec '12

Hi, I'm currently running KDE3 in openSUSE 12.2, but I'm considering converting to TDE. The instructions on your download page don't say anything about migration considerations. Will the configuration information in my .kde directory be used by TDE after the conversion, and if not, is there a procedure for importing that data into TDE? Thanks, Leslie

TDE on Arch - kicker config window empty and no Shutdown option.
by John Watson 08 Dec '12

08 Dec '12

Hello all. This is my first post on the list. Can I start by saying I have only just heard of TDE and I am very happy. For me this DE is one the best today. But one or two issues are stopping me from switching to it permanently. My first problem is this: When I right-click on kicker panel and select Configure Panel, in the new window that opens I only see options for configuring Taskbar (in the left column). Nothing for Appearance or kicker position on the screen. Can anyone help? My second problem is: I do not see any option in the menu for Shutdown, Suspend or Hibernate. I only see Logout. I have enabled the options in kcontrol. Sorry if this post lacks detail but I am sending it from Cinnamon Desktop, so I can't be more detailed. Thanks to all those involved in developing this DE!

Hi All, Finaly, Fedora 17 looks good to me, now, with selinux disabled (-: for the moment!), my graphic card & screen are all OK. Aside from the fact that my keyboard is not considered as Spanish by Gnome (very nice for the login!). I installed until TDE, the command: # cd /etc/yum.repos.d ; wget http://ppa2.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/… was OK. But # yum install trinity-desktop Modules complémentaires chargés : langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit trinity-3.5.13 | 2.7 kB 00:00 Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity/rpm/f17/trinity-… error was 12: Timeout on http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity/rpm/f17/trinity-…: (28, '') Erreur : Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: trinity-3.5.13-noarch Does it only mean that I should try later? Can someone tell me, please, if once installed TDE, a simple: # cp .kde/* .trinity will be enougth to translate my kde3.5.12 settings to TDE? Thanks. Patrick

I wasn't going to pursue it on the list since it is OT but I am quite stuck. autoconf was working fine but the move to qmake seems to have hosed debugging but only for some variables - ones defined within the method are visible but not ones defined as global to the file. I assumed it must be something with the object files but I've tried all kinds of variations of: -g -gstabs -gdwarf-2 -ggdb -ggdb3 -g3 -O0 I thought it might be the linker so I also tried -rdynamic My build options for the subproject src are indeed debug (and this does seem to automatically add the -g and -O0 but also adds a -DQT_NO_DEBUG - which I have manually removed - no luck there either and the one particular variable I was trying to see was simply an int). I then went so far as to dig out an old autoconf Makefile from version control backup and copy in the CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS to replace the ones in the qmake generated Makefile and rebuilt. No luck there either. I get the same problems in ddd even when telling it where to find the object files. I thought it might be because the paths are different now - the binary is in ../bin/spm instead of /usr/local/SPM/bin/spm and the build files are in ../build instead of ../debug/src so I put everything back the old way where the build files are in the src directory as well as the target binary. That didn't work either. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated as I am a programming ignoramus and just taking my best guess at how to fix this. At this point, I am out of cards to play :( Thanks - John > > > >

More KDevelop woes
by John A. Sullivan III 03 Dec '12

03 Dec '12

Hello, all. I'm still doing occasional battle with maintaining old Qt3 applications using KDevelop in Trinity 3.5.13.1 on Squeeze. When I start KDevelop, I am asked to select a TQt3 directory which must have an include directory containing tqt.h. On my system, tqt.h is in /usr/include/tqt. However, the dialog does not like that path or any parent along that path. What should this entry be? This may be related to another problem. I am having problems running the debugger in this qmake application. It often fails to find and evaluate variables. Thanks - John

Ark doesn't support extracting multi-part zip files
by Alexandre Couture 30 Nov '12

30 Nov '12

Hello everyone, Ark from TDE and from KDE (4.8.3) can't extract a multi-part zip file. I wanted to know if it is a bug or if it is just a missing feature. I will upload soon my PCLinuxOS TDE to filefactory.com and since they have a size limit of 400mb, I will split my 1.5gb .iso file in 4 parts by zipping it in a multi-part zip archive. Q7Zip, File-roller, PeaZip support extracting these archives, so I wanted to know if it is normal that Ark doesn't support it? Maybe it could be a feature in the next TDE release? KDE don't even have it... -Alexandre

TDE no longer opens after upgrade

Later I opened it again, but the desktop environment (terminal F7) did not appear. Instead, terminal F1 opened with the login bang. I did however notice in the text which screened by just before the bang appeared a line reading "Starting K display manager : kdm-trinity. I was able to log in as root and as a user; so access to all files was possible, but applications requiring a display would not open. While logged in as route, running startx opened a generic desktop in F7; but I did not know what to do from that point to open a user. Swiss keyboard in Trinity is German
by Thierry de Coulon 27 Nov '12

27 Nov '12

Hello, This is a totally unimportant "issue", but in TDE, when enabling keyboard layouts, you have to look for the Swiss French keyboard under "German", then change its layout to "fr". While this is probably technically right (QWERTZ is the basic German layout) we French speaking Swiss never think of it that way. KDE proposed the keyboard as "Swiss", maybe TDE could revert to this behavior some time.... Thierry

Page layout problems with the TDE interface for LibreOffice 3.6
by Alexandre Couture 23 Nov '12

23 Nov '12

Hello everyone, For my LibreOffice remaster, I did a nice welcome PDF file with pictures and instructions to put on the desktop of the LiveCD. I did it with LibreOffice on my PCLOS 2012 TDE remaster. I wrote the file, saved it and exported it to PDF. When I opened the PDF file, it looked right as it should, but I wanted to change something in it. So, when I re-opened my .odt LibreOffice file, all of the images that were cropped weren't cropped at the same place and their width and height had changed. I had some arrows to point icons on the pictures and they weren't too at the right place. To check if it wasn't just a bug on my remaster, I opened the file on my regular PC with PCLOS 2012 KDE edition. Te text appeared in the wrong way, exactly as it appeared when I have re-opened my file on the TDE system. To see if it was a PCLinuxOS-related bug, I have put back the formatting as it should for a part of my file, saved and re-opened it. The text was as it should were I have re-made the formatting... All this to say that I think that there is some bugs related to the TDE interface used in LibreOffice. Can I force LibreOffice to use the GTK2 interface (and how?), as is used on all KDE4 systems. Since I use the QTCurve theme with QT3, QT4 and GTK2, it would still be well-integrated. Thank you in advance! -Alexandre

I'm including a screenshots of inkscape. Yes they do run PCLOS just fine, but not with kde4. Usually it crashes. This doesn't happen with kde3, tde, gnome3 and E17. I do notice that kde4 eats a large amount of ram. Most of the machines have 2 gigs or more, the rest have 4 gigs or more. So it's not a ram problem. Regardless I'd love to do a complete and clean install of a TDE based PCLOS install. I document everything from beginning to end and then later use it to create an install guide. Thanks again Kate

Removing any system startup links for /etc/init.d/displayconfig-hwprobe.py ... update-rc.d: warning: kde-guidance-trinity start runlevel arguments (none) do not match LSB Default-Start values (2 3 4 5) update-rc.d: warning: kde-guidance-trinity stop runlevel arguments (none) do not match LSB Default-Stop values (1) usage: update-rc.d [-n] [-f] <basename> remove update-rc.d [-n] <basename> defaults [NN | SS KK] update-rc.d [-n] <basename> start|stop NN runlvl [runlvl] [...] . update-rc.d [-n] <basename> disable|enable [S|2|3|4|5] -n: not really -f: force The disable|enable API is not stable and might change in the future." During install I chose kdm over lightdm. I can login ok, but I still get the Unity desktop. What can I do to rectify this? Thanks for any hints, Mike

A functional TDE distribution...
by Patrick Serru 19 Nov '12

19 Nov '12

Hello all, I use OSS 11.1 + KDE3.5.12, installed from a live CD. The motherboard of the computer is based on an AMD 64-bit, and has about 6 years of age. My recent installation attempts are - OSS 12.1 + KDE3 - OSS 12.2 Minimum, - Exegnulinux_3.3. All have failed. All seem to have problems with the configuration screen: can not use the screen in 1280x1024 resolution (graphics card is ATI 350AV [Radeon 9600])! I remember trying with almost complete success, a UBUNTU + Trinity (dated March 2011). It came to use 100% CPU for no reason, and that research in files on disk 500GB were going badly with Konqueror. I left it when I found the Live CD 11.1+kde3 (I am still using). Westurday morning, I tried exegnulinux_3.3. I did not succeed. A 1360x768 screen has been proposed (not 1380, but 1360!), Then, once in this mode and after restarting the configuration tool, a 1380x1024 screen, but can not complete the setting because the "configuration tool work in graphical mode and if you stop the monitor or the card, this tool can not work "or something like that! In addition, the installation on a USB key failed. The last distribution tryed (just now) was Fedora-17 (07/2012), a live TDE CD that is doing the best by far. But here, at the time of installation: - Unable to change (select any other) disk to install the boot loader - Can not format in an other format than ext4 (no ReiserFS). - Alert at end of installation: "Can not install the boot loader". The cd that I used to boot one of my systems using GRUB1 do not know Ext4. Consequently to boot Fedora is IMPOSSIBLE! Finally, I feel very overtaken by my readings in this list for the USERS, which speaks so much of INSTALLATION SCRIPTS. And if I well understand, a lot of things changed in Linux: XWindow, SytV init, Grub, give up of reiserfs for Ext4, KDE4 & Gnome3, sound system, etc, etc... My question is: OpenSuse is now made so low that I MUST DROP this distribution. Direct me to what? Thank you very much for your work and help.

Trinity packages for PCLinuxOS 2012
by Alexandre Couture 18 Nov '12

18 Nov '12

Hello everyone, I tried the Fedora LiveCD and I am very impressed with it. I would like to install TDE on my PCLinuxOS 2012 system to make a remaster that use TDE. With proper mods, it can look almost as good as KDE4 while being so much faster and using less memory. By using oxygen icon theme and similar color theme, with the new Ubuntu font, as in PCLinuxOS 2012 KDE edition, it looks awesome! It would be very appreciated to have packages for PCLinuxOS. Thank you for making KDE3 living again! -Alex

Making a dual monitor setting in Kcontrol endure
by Lisi Reisz 15 Nov '12

15 Nov '12

Yet another computer in the house having died, I have temporarily set my husband up using my netbook with a monitor, keyboard and mouse, running Squeeze with Trinity 3.10.13.1. A single screen is set up that displays on both monitors the same. This is unusable on the monitor. I can find no way of setting two different settings. The screen number control is greyed out. So I use KContriol to set up a better resolution and sync rate, which necessarily sets itself up on both. Except that the netbook screen goes on strike and goes blank. This suits me fine! But, although I have set this up in KControl, every time my husband reboots, I have to set the monitor up for him again. He is forgetting even those computer skills that I had managed to teach him. I haven't a hope of teaching him how to use KControl for himself. Help! When I have finished the course I am doing, I shall set him up properly. But that is not until December. I need to limp him through now. So is there any way I can persuade Trinity to keep the settings in KControl?? Thanks, Lisi

make qt4 applications open folders in konqueror
by Samuele Carcagno 09 Nov '12

09 Nov '12

first of all kudos to the developers, I've been running trinity since last week on one of my machines and it has been a pleasant experience! I'm running TDE on an Ubuntu Precise installation, I removed all kde4 packages before installing TDE now I'm having problems making a qt4 application (mendeley pdf organizer) to open folders in konqueror, it opens them in firefox instead. I tried to open folders with xdg-open and it also that uses firefox. I've tried several things, issuing the following as suggested in the Arch Wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xdg-open $ xdg-mime default kfmclient.desktop inode/directory didn't work I tried setting kfmclient as the application for opening inode/directory in /usr/share/applications/default.list as well as in .local/share/applications/default.list and it didn't work. Eventually I tried installing nautilus, and as I suspected it took possession of xdg, and xdg-open directoryname now uses nautilus, but that's not really what I wanted, I would like that xdg-open uses konqueror any suggestion would be appreciated! Is kiosktool meant to work in Trinity 3.5.13.1 ? It doesn't seem to change anything in /etc/kde-profile If I do the following:- (logged in as user name xtest) su touch /tmp/marker kiosktool (and delete the Multimedia menu) find / -xdev -newer /tmp/marker I would expect to see a list of the files changed by kiosktool in /etc.... but what I get is:- lapcat:~xtest% find / -xdev -newer /tmp/marker /root /root/.DCOPserver_lapcat_lapcat.local_1 /root/.ICEauthority /root/.trinity/share/config /root/.trinity/share/config/kiosktoolrc /root/.trinity/share/config/kdeglobals /root/.trinity/share/config/knotifyrc /root/.kde-test /root/.kde-test/.config /root/.kde-test/.config/menus /root/.kde-test/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu /root/.kde-test/.qt /root/.kde-test/.kde /root/.kde-test/.kde/socket-lapcat /root/.kde-test/.kde/cache-lapcat /root/.kde-test/.kde/cache-lapcat/ksycoca /root/.kde-test/.kde/cache-lapcat/ksycocastamp /root/.kde-test/.kde/tmp-lapcat /root/.kde-test/.kde/share /root/.kde-test/.kde/share/config /root/.kde-test/.kde/share/config/kmenueditrc /root/.kde-test/.kde/share/services /root/.kde-test/.kde/share/services/update_ksycoca /root/.DCOPserver_lapcat_lapcat.local:1 /home/xtest/.xsession-errors /tmp /tmp/.ICE-unix /tmp/.ICE-unix/dcop12681-1352138257 /tmp/ksocket-root /tmp/ksocket-root/kioskdir /tmp/ksocket-root/klauncherKOXBYp.slave-socket /tmp/ksocket-root/kdeinit-lapcat.local:1 /tmp/ksocket-root/kdeinit_lapcat.local_1 /tmp/kde-root /tmp/kde-root/kioskdir /tmp/kde-root/kioskdir/ksycoca /tmp/kde-root/kiosktoolosCNi1.tmp /tmp/kde-root/kiosktoolYFbYkg.tmp /tmp/kde-root/ksycoca /tmp/kde-root/kiosktoolP3By0D.tmp /tmp/kde-root/kiosktoolLGRkj2.tmp lapcat:~xtest% If I go back into kiosktool, the Multimedia menu is still enabled. Konqueror and Flash
by russell＠lls.lls.com 05 Nov '12

05 Nov '12

Playing further with my shiny new Wheezy/Trinity system I tried installing flash (yeah I know but users demand it). Downloaded the latest and greatest (11.2 r202) from Adobe and copied libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so Started Firefox and flash is detected and works. Start Konqueror and although the plugin shows up in the 'Configure Konqueror->Plugins' list it doesn't seem to work. Trying http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html I get a javascript freezing popup.... clicking Continue brings the javascript freezing popup again and again... clicking Abort shows the page without the Flash 'movie' or version numbers. This page works fine in Firefox with the one and only libfashplayer.so on my system. I then tried deleting /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so, enabling the nonfree repos and installed flashplugin-nonfree. That installs the same libflashplayer.so (same checksum) and, as expected, the results are identical. So.... how does one get flash working with konqueror ?? -- Regards, Russell -------------------------------------------------------------------- | Russell Brown | MAIL: russell(a)lls.com PHONE: 01780 471800 | | Lady Lodge Systems | WWW Work: http://www.lls.com | | Peterborough, England | WWW Play: http://www.ruffle.me.uk | --------------------------------------------------------------------

Controling colors in Konsole
by Janek S. 04 Nov '12

04 Nov '12

Guys, I have a question that is not exactly Trinity related, but I think you might know how to solve my problem. I do most of my work in Konsole + Emacs. Terminal by default supports 8 colors and if I stick with that everything is fine. Now I'd like to have more colors. First I set TERM=xterm-256color in my .bashrc. Emacs sees that 256 colors are available (as listed with M-x list-colors-display). Then I install color-theme for Emacs and try selecting themes that are available. Most of them are completely unusable, which leads me to conclusion that Konsole somehow distorts tho original colors intended by theme authors. My question is about interaction between Konsole, TERM value and the way Emacs sees colors. In Konsole I can customize 20 different colors - how do they influence 256 colors of the terminal? I noticed that the color set I choose in Konsole influences the color theme in Emacs - again, how does this interact? At the moment colors I get are completely random and it would be good to have some control over it. Janek

Porting from KDE 3.5.10
by russell＠lls.lls.com 02 Nov '12

02 Nov '12

Are there any notes on porting code from KDE 3.5.10 to Trinity? I've looked but can't find anything. I have a KDE 3.5.10 package (a heavily modified version of konsole) that I'm trying to build on a Wheezy/Trinity system. I can see that I have to change things like QT_VERSION to TQT_VERSION and some, but not all of the include files need prefixing with a 't' and my include path needs altering but I'm still running into configuration issues like so: ./configure --with-qt-dir=/usr/share/tqt3 \ --with-qt-includes=/usr/include/tqt3 \ --prefix=/usr fails with..... configure:23451: rm -rf SunWS_cache; g++ -o conftest -Wnon-virtual-dtor -Wno-long-long -Wundef -Wall -pedantic -W -Wpointer-arith -Wmissing-prototypes -Wwrite-strings -ansi -D_XOPEN_SOURCE=500 -D_BSD_SOURCE -Wcast-align -Wconversion -O2 -fno-exceptions -fno-check-new -INO -I. -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -D_REENTRANT -L/usr/share/tqt3/lib -L/usr/lib conftest.cc -lqt-mt -lpng -lz -lm -ljpeg -ldl -lXext -lX11 -lSM -lICE -lpthread 1>&5 cc1plus: warning: command line option '-Wmissing-prototypes' is valid for C/ObjC but not for C++ [enabled by default] conftest.cc:2:22: fatal error: tqglobal.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. configure:23454: $? = 1 If I change the configure line to use /usr/include/tqt instead of tqt3 like so: ./configure --with-qt-dir=/usr/share/tqt --with-qt-includes=/usr/include/tqt --prefix=/usr then I get similar errors: configure:23451: rm -rf SunWS_cache; g++ -o conftest -Wnon-virtual-dtor -Wno-long-long -Wundef -Wall -pedantic -W -Wpointer-arith -Wmissing-prototypes -Wwrite-strings -ansi -D_XOPEN_SOURCE=500 -D_BSD_SOURCE -Wcast-align -Wconversion -O2 -fno-exceptions -fno-check-new -I/usr/include/tqt -I. -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -D_REENTRANT -L/usr/share/tqt/lib -L/usr/lib conftest.cc -lqt-mt -lpng -lz -lm -ljpeg -ldl -lXext -lX11 -lSM -lICE -lpthread 1>&5 cc1plus: warning: command line option '-Wmissing-prototypes' is valid for C/ObjC but not for C++ [enabled by default] In file included from /usr/include/tqt/tqglobal.h:25:0, from conftest.cc:2: /usr/include/tqt/tqt.h:54:23: fatal error: ntqglobal.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. configure:23454: $? = 1 Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Could not start kdeinit error
by John A. Sullivan III 31 Oct '12

31 Oct '12

Hello, all. I upgraded on of our Debian Squeeze systems today from TDE 3.5.12 to 3.5.13.1 however I receive a could not start kdeinit error message. I did search for the error and see a thread which says to check the libqt3-mt library version but I believe I have the correct one: ii libqt3-mt 3:3.3.8d-1ubuntu0+ax1~squeeze There were no errors I saw on the apt-get install the second time. I did have a problem the first time. I ran apt-get dist-upgrade from within TDE. Suddenly, my Windows Manager vanished. I let the upgrade proceed but then it asked for input and I was unable to provide the input so I exited the GUI and killed the apt-get process. A dpkg --configure a seemed to complete the installation correctly. What do I do next? Thanks - John

Need to fallback to 3.5.13.0. Package archives?
by Ran Talbott 31 Oct '12

31 Oct '12

I did a successful install of 3.5.13 on one of my Ubuntu Lucid systems back in August. I had a problem with the X system not autodetecting my monitor properly, but circumvented that by forcing it to the right configuration with a manually-reated xorg.conf. Yesterday, I made the mistake of doing an "apt-get upgrade" on that system that upgraded trinity to what appears to be 3.5.13.1. Now that system is de-GUIed: if I start KDM, the X server refuses to start. There are no errors in the log: it just gives up. This looks similar to the problem I had back in August, but may be different. I tried installing XDM. That fixes the X server startup, but the system fails to create the desktop: I get no taskbar, and the system continuously spawns konqueror instances that immediately crash. The packages I installed 2 months ago have disappeared from the repository. The links to the install CDs are broken. A google search for the package filenames returns no results. Is there an archive or mirror someplace that hasn't been purged? Or am I just totally screwed? Thanks, Ran

Hi, here is my problem :I had a Trinity perfectly working on oneiric,This afternoon I decided it was time to upgrade the whole oneiric, including the KDE 4,and since then there is no more main panel bar, or whatever you call it :no more menus, except for the desktop's one, no more notifications, not state icons, etc., only the naked desktop with application icons on it and nothing else. Does someone know of a way for me to recover from this state ?Daniele

KWallet
by leee 28 Oct '12

28 Oct '12

Hello folks, Can anyone tell me how to remove or disable KWallet? I recently added a couple of new very low traffic e-mail to accounts to check and I want to store their passwords. However, I don't want to use KWallet and instead I just store them in the kmail config file. The problem is that now, every time I close Kmail I get a prompt to set up KWallet and when I decline to use it I'm then prompted to save the passwords again. If I simply close the KWallet prompt I lose the saved passwords and then have to look them up and re-enter them each time I check the accounts. This is really annoying. So, is there some way of removing KWallet entirely or at least disabling it? TIA LeeE

Trinity 3.5.13-sru for Ubuntu 12.10 - Quantal Quetzal
by Slávek Banko 28 Oct '12

28 Oct '12

Hi all, It's been a few days, when it was officially released a new version of Ubuntu - Quantal Quetzal. Although I have not yet seen questions on the availability of Trinity for this new version, I would like to inform you that are available for testing basic packages Trinity stable branch - 3.5.13-sru: https://quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/~slavek-banko/+archive/axis/+packag… Are available so far only basic packages - application packages will be added subsequently. I note that I do not have a test machine with Quantal, so you'll be the first one to test the packages in practice. Slavek --

kdevelop dependecy problem on debian
by Mag. Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 26 Oct '12

26 Oct '12

I just tried to get starting with kdevelop. Somehow I cannot get the development files installed: # apt-get install libqt3-mt-dev libqt3-mt Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done libqt3-mt is already the newest version. libqt3-mt set to manually installed. Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libqt3-mt-dev : Depends: libqt3-mt (= 3:3.3.8d-1ubuntu0+ax1~squeeze) but 3:3.3.8-d-0ubuntu0+sr73+pr181~squeeze is to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. Any idea how to correct that? Nik

Hello I just wanted to change some setting of the users of the system. But when I try to access the user management via the KDE control center I obtain the following error message: (Using Kubuntu 10.04 and the latest trinity package) ,---- | | The module User Management could not be loaded. | Possible reasons: | * An error occurred during your last kde upgrade leaving an orphaned control module | * You have old third party modules lying around | | Check these points carefully and try to remove the module mentioned | in the error message. If this fails, consider contacting your distributor | or packager. `---- Which package is missing? Thanks Uwe Brauer

Hi guys, Is there any chance you would prepare TDE packages for Debian Wheezy (testing)? I recently changed the release because the packages I used on Debian stable were outdated and I really miss Trinity Desktop. Yours, d33tah

Minor problems
by westbound＠gmx.net 20 Oct '12

Hi, I have been using Ubuntu 12.04 with xfce/xubuntu as long as there was no trinity repository available. Now that I have updated to the trinity desktop, there seem to be some problems that I can't figure out. Firstly, I want single-click activation on the desktop and in the file manager, but can't find the place where to configure this. Then, I am missing the Sleep and Hibernate buttons on logout. Both of the mentioned items have been working ok on my previous setup with kubuntu-trinity 10.10. Anybody have some hints how to rectify this? Thanks, Mike

I recognize that we are far behind the curve on migrating Qt4 but we do not have the resources migrate this important application at this time. But this seems a bit strange. Doesn't that violate the whole idea of Qt being cross platform? What if I want to run my old Qt3 application on a platform that does not have TDE installed? Thanks - John
