Not receiving Bugzilla mail
by Julius Schwartzenberg 23 Nov '09

23 Nov '09

Hi, It seems I'm still not able to sign up to Bugzilla. I don't get the sign up e-mail when I fill in my address. The reason the Kubuntu KDM theme doesn't show, is because the directory kdm-settings in the source and when installed /etc/default/kdm.d is missing from kubuntu-default-settings-kde3. Is there a reason this was removed? It would be nice if it could be added back, so the Kubuntu theme in KDM would work again. Thanks, Julius

enhancement of kopete crypto plugin
by Stefan Endrullis 16 Nov '09

16 Nov '09

Hello kopete users, if you are using the cryptoplugin of kopete you might be also annoyed by the visual overhead ("Outgoing Encrypted Message:") which is constantly printed with each incoming and outgoing message and consumes more space than the real messages. Long ago there has been a bug report on this issue (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77486), a patch was submitted and the bug was closed as fixed, but the patch never came into a final Debian or Ubuntu release, I think because of KDE4. But what about applying this patch against the KDE3 remix repository now? The patch is hosted here: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=40844&vote=good&tan=7513769 I also would like to help getting this patch applied. But I had some problem with the compilation of the kopete package. Normally I just do apt-get build-dep <package> apt-get -b source <package> and the binary package is generated from the source package. But in case of kopete-kde3 the compilation fails with this error: [...] g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I/home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/./kopete/protocols/groupwise/libgroupwise -I../../../.. -I../../../../kopete/protocols/gadu/libgadu -I/home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/./kopete/protocols/groupwise/libgroupwise/qca/src -I/home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/./kopete/protocols/groupwise -I/opt/kde3/include/kde -I/usr/share/qt3/include -I. -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -D_REENTRANT -D_LARGE_FILES=1 -Wno-long-long -Wundef -ansi -D_XOPEN_SOURCE=500 -D_BSD_SOURCE -Wcast-align -Wchar-subscripts -Wall -W -Wpointer-arith -DNDEBUG -DNO_DEBUG -O2 -g -O2 -g -Wall -O2 -Wformat-security -Wmissing-format-attribute -Wno-non-virtual-dtor -fno-exceptions -fno-check-new -fno-common -DQT_CLEAN_NAMESPACE -DQT_NO_ASCII_CAST -DQT_NO_STL -DQT_NO_COMPAT -DQT_NO_TRANSLATION -c /home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/./kopete/protocols/groupwise/libgroupwise/rtf.cc -fPIC -DPIC -o .libs/rtf.o rtf.ll: In member function 'void RTF2HTML::PrintUnquoted(const char*, ...)': rtf.ll:316: warning: function might be possible candidate for 'gnu_printf' format attribute rtf.ll: In member function 'void Level::setText(const char*)': rtf.ll:574: error: invalid conversion from 'const char*' to 'char*' make[7]: *** [rtf.lo] Error 1 make[7]: Leaving directory `/home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu/kopete/protocols/groupwise/libgroupwise' make[6]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[6]: Leaving directory `/home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu/kopete/protocols/groupwise/libgroupwise' make[5]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[5]: Leaving directory `/home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu/kopete/protocols/groupwise' make[4]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[4]: Leaving directory `/home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu/kopete/protocols' make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu/kopete' make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu' make[1]: *** [all] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/stefan/programmierung/c/kdenetwork-kde3-3.5.10/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu' make: *** [debian/stamp-makefile-build] Error 2 dpkg-buildpackage: error: debian/rules build gave error exit status 2 I'm using karmic with some lucid packages (libc6). configure cannot find KDE headers
by Stefan Endrullis 31 Oct '09

Hello, does someone know who to tell a configure script where to find the KDE headers? When I try to compile a certain KDE application, configure fails with the following error: [...] checking for KDE... configure: error: in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail. So, check this please and use another prefix! I have the following KDE devel packages installed: - kdebase-kde3-dev - kdelibs-kde3-dev Am I missing any package? I tried the prefix returned by "kde-config --prefix": ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde3 But the error remains the same. Do you have any ideas? Regards, Stefan

ttf-bitstream-vera not in karmic anymore
by Julius Schwartzenberg 21 Sep '09

21 Sep '09

I don't know whether this is known bug. It is the first thing I come across when installing KDE3, so I can imagine it is. kubuntu-desktop-kde3 depends on ttf-bitstream-vera but it's not available anymore in karmic as you can see here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/nl/jaunty/ttf-bitstream-vera Here is a patch: http://haar.student.utwente.nl/~julius/patches/no_ttf-bitstream-vera.patch I just removed the package from the dependencies. This allows me to install everything, but somehow also brings in some KDE4 packages on my system. Another option would be to add this package to the KDE3 repository.

Bugzilla doesn't work & kdm bug
by Julius Schwartzenberg 10 Sep '09

10 Sep '09

Hi, I tried to sign up for bugzilla at http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/ to report a bug, but this doesn't work anymore. I mailed kb9vqf(a)pearsoncomputing.net but didn't get a reply. I noticed mail from this address on the list, so I hope it's picked up here ;) The bug I want to report is that although kdm-kde3 installs /etc/pam.d/kdm-kde3 and /etc/pam.d/kdm-np-kde3 The installed kdm actually uses /etc/pam.d/kdm and /etc/pam.d/kdm-np Which are from the kdm (KDE4) package. When purging the kdm package, this will break passwordless and auto logins and sessions will use incorrect language settings with kdm-kde3. There are probably a few more issues, but LANG not getting set properly was the most noticable for me. I hope this bug can be fixed. Thanks in advance, Julius

What's missing in KDE 4: let's file some bugs
by Dotan Cohen 07 Sep '09

07 Sep '09

The day when KDE 3 will no longer be viable is getting closer every day. Please tell me what problems you are having with KDE 4 so that we can get them fixed. KDE 3 is great because it is mature, configurable, and feature-laden without being bloated. I do not want to see that go to waste! It is the KDE 3 holdouts who have the attention to detail to distinguish the "little things" that make KDE 3 so great that are currently lacking in KDE 4. Note that KDE 4.3 really solves most of the issues for me and most other people that I deal with. In fact, the features is adds over KDE 3 were enough to get me to switch. So please try KDE 4.3 and _let_me_know_ what does not work for you so that we can file bugs. I want to know about missing features, unintuitiveness, bugs, regressions, anything. You _will_ need to relearn some minor things as KDE 4 is a rewrite of KDE, not a Qt4 port of KDE 3, however let's get the major issues fixed. Thanks. KDE really needs the picky, stubborn KDE 3 users to push the devs (who might not have the same attention to detail as us) in the right direction. I'm here to bridge the gap between us (the users) and the devs. -- Dotan Cohen http://what-is-what.com http://gibberish.co.il

LTSP kde3 and kde4 - kde3 starts kicker and plasma comes too!
by Kevin Colyer 13 Aug '09

13 Aug '09

Dear All, Thanks for making KDE3 available for Kubuntu users. I have been running an LTSP network with KDE3 for several happy users. Anyway as I was restricted to running Hardy I have taken the plunge and now have Jaunty with KDE3 and KDE installed. (I have decided 4.3 is OK for me) So I have the LTSP terminals working OK. But when I boot them into KDE3 Plasma starts too, as well as a number of duplicated KDE 4 services (or because of probably). I added: export KDEDIRS=/opt/kde3/:/usr/ export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/opt/kde3/share/:/usr/share/ to /opt/kde3/bin/startkde but that makes no difference. KDE4 performance is poor on LTSP so I can't migrate the users. I call kill off the KDE4 processes and will train users to do this. Any ideas how I can stop KDE4 processes starting? Where are they being started from? Local printers not supported
by Michael Hirsch 05 Aug '09

05 Aug '09

I'm trying to help my Dad with a problem. He's using KDE 3.5.x and his USB printer stopped working. He can see the printer with "lsusb" so it would appear that USB works, but when he tries to add the printer with the KDE Add Printer Wizard, the choice "Local printer (parallel, serial, USB)" is deactivated. He can't press the radio button to enable it. The other radio buttons are all active except for "Serial Fax/Modem printer". What can deactivate that button. It happens on both his and my Mom's systems, but they are running the same software, so that doesn't narrow things down, much. My machine is running the same software, too, and it is enabled for me. I can't figure out what he could be missing to turn off local printer support. His OS is Ubuntu Jaunty with the semi-official KDE 3.5 installed. Thanks, Michael

KDE4 deamon & co running in KDE3 session
by Miroslav Ľos 23 Jul '09

23 Jul '09

Hello, I have Jaunty with both KDE3 and KDE4 installed, as I want to allow users to choose either. But when any user starts a kde3 session (even a new user; same result with xinit+xterm+PATH=/opt/kde3/bin:$PATH startkde, so it's not a kdm4 thing for sure), kde4 services like kdeinit4, kded4, nepomukserver and krunner start too. These are superfluously doubling functionality (krunner vs. katapult) and eating memory doing nothing. Users that choose kde3 never use kde4 apps here. So, is there a way to avoid running these services? Thanks, Miroslav Los

Has anyone installed this? It is in the "Scribbler" ppa. 64bit & Selected KDE 3.5 packages?

Hi, Am I correct to assume the following: - The kde 3.5 repos contain 64 bit packages as well? - Adding the kde 3.5 repos in a standard 9.04 installation will allow me to install individual kde 3.5 packages rather than the whole kubuntu-desktop-kde3. I just can't stand a handful of applications, like the new gwenview. Thanks. A.B.

knetworkmanager
by King Knut 08 May '09

08 May '09

Hi, I'm really happy to have KDE3 back as my default desktop. Thus I've got the possibility to check out KDE4 while working with a known an stable desktop. But there is one thing I'm already missing. Knetworkmanager doesn't work anymore as it did before the upgrade to Jaunty. The program used to be a powerful tool which I used quite frequently not only to connect to different wireless networks with my laptop but also to get additional information like Mac-ID's of access point or statistics about data transmission. None of these features exist anymore. Is there a way to get back the "old" knetworkmanager or at least is there a tool which provides the same functionality? Knut

Jaunty kde3 remix - no application icons in kicker
by King Knut 08 May '09

08 May '09

Hi, I recently made an upgrade from Hardy to Jaunty on my laptop (Intel-X86 packages). Since KDE4 doesn't provide the full functionality of KDE3 I installed kubuntu-desktop-kde3 following the instructions given on https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Kde3/Jaunty to get a system with two parallel desktops. After kicking out some leftover Hardy-packages I eventually managed to get a working KDE-3.5.10. But KDE3 started with an empty KDE panel. I first had to add applets like "Clock", "K Menu", "Show Desktop", "Taskbar", "Trash" etc. again to get what I used to have before the upgrade. The only thing still missing are the icons of programs like "kalarm", "kpowersave", "kmix", "kgpg" etc. All of these programs are running on my system either in the KDE3 or KDE4 version. But none of them seem to register with kicker under KDE3 whereas the icons appear in the panel of KDE4. How can I fix this problem? Thanks Knut

State of Bluetooth support
by John S Robinson 08 May '09

08 May '09

Hi, I think this has been discussed previously, but I'd just like to clarify the state of Bluetoot support in KDE3.5 on Jaunty. Is kdebluetooth available? I guess if not, then general bluetooth support (for input devices etc) is still available using the Gnome tools if installed? Thanks, JohnR.

There is a bug for it here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=182052 And here is the applet: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Run+Command?content=91495 Looks like it's been updated recently. I'll check it out. On Wed, May 6, 2009 at 11:54 PM, Dotan Cohen <dotancohen(a)gmail.com> wrote: >> 2. I am filing bugs for features missing from KDE 4 that were present in KDE 3. Please send to me the features that are missing for _you_ so that we can get them in future versions of KDE 4. Thanks! repository ok?
by Michael Lambert 06 May '09

06 May '09

Greetings kubuntu-kde3.5-users, I am attempting to install kde3 on a fresh jaunty cli system. I have followed the instructions at http://apt.pearsoncomputing.net/ Specifically, added to /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main Then... sudo apt-get update wget http://apt.pearsoncomputing.net/public.gpg sudo apt-key add public.gpg However, sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop-kde3 fails with "Couldn't find package". To test, sudo apt-get install kde3-maintainers-keyring succeeds. Searching the repository, I can not find "kubuntu-desktop-kde3" anywhere. Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem with the repository? BTW, I can not use the jaunty-kde3 live cd because it does not support installation on a linux raid1 mirror. -Mike

System monitor improvements
by Dotan Cohen 02 May '09

02 May '09

This issue is a tangent of an earlier thread where I requested people to mention their reasons for staying with KDE 3. The System Monitor plasmoid seems to be a big enough single concern to warrant it's own thread. After going through the changes requested for the System Monitor plasmoid, I have broken the requests up into three separate bug reports: 1) System Monitor plasmoid: revert to single plasmoid https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191341 2) System Monitor plasmoid configuration requests https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191342 3) Please add System Monitor plasmoids that existed in KDE 3 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191340 Please comment on the relevant bugs, but most importantly, _include_screenshots_ of KDE 3. Assume that the dev who is reading the report and looking at the screenshot is _not_ familiar with KDE 3 so label important things and describe changes _in_detail_. When in doubt, ask here or contact me off-list. Just to make it clear, I am not affiliated with KDE in any manner other than as an end user like you. My goal is _not_ to force people to abandon KDE 3 for a KDE 4 which does not suite them, rather, it is to identify the strong points of KDE 3 and to integrate them into KDE 4. -- Dotan Cohen http://what-is-what.com http://gibberish.co.il

"Taskbar is part of the panel and what I was trying to say is that as soon as you have a certain number of applications open, their respective icons are not distinguishable from icons in other parts of the panel, leaving you with a large number of icons which looks overwhelming and cluttered. I mentioned separators between various aspects of the panel and these could help to know what's what." Ah I know what you mean now. I've got around that in 4.2 by putting the Taskbar in a panel almost on its own - I only have the K menu in with it. The other stuff like clock, power, network, devices... I put into a different panel and put it up the right of the screen. Just thought I'd suggest that here for other people struggling with the transition. "My file manager is cp, mv, ls, dd and rm (plus cat and grep) and I'd like to use it on pluggable devices before starting Dolphin." Agreed, but again here's something to ease the pain: have you tried hitting F4 in a Dolphin window? You then get a command line where the directory stays in synch (both ways) with the GUI pane. I agree the whole mount/unmount thing in KDE 4's GUI is broken. The way GNOME does it by default is excellent (but that's the only thing I like about GNOME. :-) Zack

how to tell KDE3.5 where to search for executeables
by Stefan Endrullis 30 Apr '09

30 Apr '09

Hello list, the executables of KDE3.5 are now located in /opt/kde3/bin, but my KDE3 installation doesn't seam to know that. My present solution for the console was to set the PATH in my .zshrc and it worked fine until yesterday. Yesterday I tried to print a pdf via Kpdf but I got the error that cupsdoprint could not be found since it's located in /opt/kde3/bin. What can I do? How can I set the PATH variable such that KDE3 also knows it? PS: I have already thrown the PATH assignment into /etc/environment but that didn't help, too. Regards, Stefan

looking for the list archive
by Gerhard Zintel 30 Apr '09

30 Apr '09

Hi List, I was so glad to find out the possibility to install KDE 3.5.10 in Jaunty. Thanks very much too all of you who have contributed! The installation went more or less smooth but now I'd like to ask a few questions or discuss certain matters according a few remaining quirks. That's why I first tried to find a mailing list archive of this list to look what is already discussed but --- no success here. I prefere to first read the archive not to spam the list with well discussed subjects. Can anyone point me into the right direction please? Thanks a lot Gerhard

k3b with extra codecs
by Bastian Salmela 27 Apr '09

27 Apr '09

hi, i'm having some problems with k3b-kde. originally it didn't even start because libdvdread3 package turned out to be just empty virtual one. i found working version from older ubuntu, and got the program to start and burn things. but today, I needed to make audio-cd out of mp3s, and k3b spat out an error. what I understood is, I need the libk3b3-extracodecs-kde3 package. this is in repositories, but it can't be installed because it requires libavcodec51, and on Jaunty there is only libavcodec52. so, how to fix this, has anyone got it to work? thanks. .b

Re: [kubuntu-kde3.5-announce] Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 with KDE3.5 FINAL now available for download!
by Michael Hirsch 27 Apr '09

27 Apr '09

Thanks, Tim. That's great news. What is the proper procedure for upgrading? I currently have several Intrepid systems with KDE 3.5. When I tested the water with an upgrade to Jaunty it looked like most of kde3 was getting removed. So I canceled the upgrade. What is the expected upgrade path? Do I run the upgrade, then reinstall your debs? Can someone on this list report on their upgrade experience? I'm looking forward to doing it just as soon as I know how. Kubuntu/Kde3/Jaunty - Final Release?
by Charlie Pearce 24 Apr '09

24 Apr '09

Hi all, Just a quick question, I'm planning to install the Kde3 Remix of Jaunty for myself as well as a friend (which is why I'm asking so that I can give them an estimate, I'm happy to just wait myself!)- as such I was wondering if there is an ETA on the final release of this? Or will we be able to upgrade from the release candidate using apt? Thanks in advance, cjp

Getting ready for Jaunty
by Michael Hirsch 09 Apr '09

09 Apr '09

Tim, Jaunty comes out in about 2 weeks now, and I'm not sure what the process is going to be for us 3.5 users. What is involved for us in the upgrade. I don't currently have KDE4 installed. When I upgrade will it get installed or does it stay away. Do I have to edit my sources.list file, or does it automatically get pointed to the 3.5 jaunty repo? Can you tell us what to expect? Thanks, Michael

kopete can't talk to my kwallet
by Michael Hirsch 08 Apr '09

08 Apr '09

I've got another question. Again, my home system works well and my laptop has trouble. Both run kde 3.5 on Ubuntu. The desktop is 64 bit and the laptop 32 bit. When kopete starts on my laptop is can't connect to kwallet. It prompts for passwords, then says that it can't save them securely. This happens every time I log in. On my desktop, kopete connects to kwallet fine. I get prompted once for the kwallet password, and never again. I don't even know where to start looking for the problem. Michael

RE: [kubuntu-kde3.5-users] knetworkmanager problem
by Zack Evans 11 Mar '09

Another vote here for giving up on knetworkmanager - it doesn't work properly in 4.2 either, or not for me anyway, so I don't think there's much change of a working backport to 3.5! I use wicd for jumping on and off wireless networks, but that is flaky too. At least it works, and if it doesn't you can see what command lines it tried to use which helps you troubleshoot. regards Zack -----Original Message----- From: B. knetworkmanager problem
by Stefan Endrullis 11 Mar '09

11 Mar '09

Hello KDE3.5 users, I'm very happy about the KDE3 PPA of Tim Pearson. All my KDE programs work, except the knetworkmanager. Therefore I wanted to ask you if you know a good solution for the knetworkmanager problem? My current workaround is to use knetworkmanager in combination with a shell script. First I tell knetworkmanager to connect to a specific WLAN, then I start my shell which does the same. By this procedure knetworkmanager recognizes the connection and all KDE programs are cheerful. Do you know an easier solution? Regards, Stefan

Browsing info pages from konqueror
by Michael Hirsch 10 Mar '09

10 Mar '09

I have two systems, both running kubuntu 8.10 with the KDE 3.5 packages installed and no KDE 4.2. I'm very happy with this combination. On my desktop, I can use konqueror to browze info pages. If I enter "info:grub" I'll see the grub manual. On my desktop that doesn't work. Konqueror doesn't seem to know about info:. Does anyone know what package I need to install to get this working on my laptop, too? Thanks, Michael
