Mouse click in konqueror as root
by ajh-valmer 18 Feb '22

Hello, When I open Konqueror as file manager, as root, in the sub-folders, I have to click the mouse two times. Opening Konqueror as user, I can click one time. Sorry, I'm lazy, if it's possible to make one, why to make two ? :-) Thanks, cheers André

gtk2-tqt-engine causing crashes
by William Morder 17 Feb '22

17 Feb '22

I believe that I recall Slavek telling me that this could be resolved by uninstalling something ... gtk3 ...? maybe? In particular, I have Open Office 4.1.11 installed, and I believe that I've tracked down any missing dependencies, but after the splash screen it still crashes. It worked just fine on my desktop machine, which ran Devuan Beowulf 32-bit. This is a newer machine, on which I'm running Devuan Chimaera 64-bit. Please do not recommend that I use Libre Office or some other crap; this is what I need. I did read on the Apache Open Office site that jre and jdk packages were needed, so I already got those. Any suggestions? Bill

Protocol not supported: smb
by Thierry de Coulon 16 Feb '22

16 Feb '22

Hello all, I connect to my school network with openconnect (they use pulse), and then open an smb share with konqueror. This has always worked, but on my new machine it filas with "protocol not supported smb". The only thing that is really different on this install is that, for the moment, I am using lightdm (I wanted to test all MX tools with lightdm first). Can it be that konqueror requires tdm to provide smb. Or what could be missing? Samba is installed. Thierry

Greeter on wrong display
by Felix Miata 16 Feb '22

16 Feb '22

I have a PC with 2560x1440 on DisplayPort, and 1920x1080 on HDMI. The greeter shows up on the small HDMI screen. Is there something in tdmrc or friends that can move it to the DP screen, and preferably, start off TDE sessions by default with the larger/DP screen as the primary? I know how to use xrandr to make the DP primary, but it's not working for the login greeter. It tried it in /etc/trinity/tdm/Xsetup, but it's apparently ignored or otherwise ineffective there. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Trinity on HD+ display
by Thierry de Coulon 15 Feb '22

15 Feb '22

I know we allready has this in some way. I now have a new-old (mean second hand) Lenovo X1 Tablet (because I need the touchscreen). Installing MX-Linux " TDE was quite easy and, so far, everything runs fine (I have not tried sleep/hibernate yet). The machine has a (nice) display with a 3000x2000 resolution. Xfce takes care of this with a gtk setting that lets "multiply" everything by two. So far I have "adapted" TDE by choosing bigger icons. I seem to remeber there was some other place where I could also make things bigger - I'll find it. Just wanted to know if anyone with experience with such a display has developped a "good" way to scale Trinity. Thierry

the mouse on the extreme right and left
by ajh-valmer 09 Feb '22

09 Feb '22

Hello, when I approach the mouse arrow on the extreme right and left in a open window (konqueror, konsole...), the window disappears for another window opened, it's unpleasant in the long run. Maybe, the border of the window has a space with the screen, how to put it at zero ? The automatic settings of the screen doesn't solve the problem. Cheers, André

I'M BAAAACK!
by c. marlow 07 Feb '22

07 Feb '22

I am back, and I am wanting to give TDE another shot. But this time, I am coming to you from Fedora 35! I see there's a way to install TDE in Fedora 35 So what I will prob do is a Fedora XFCE spin install And then do... Install the minimalistic Trinity Desktop Environment: dnf install trinity-tdebase And then all of the programs that I use on a daily basis, install as flatpaks to where I can use some newer, up to date apps. And of course make THUNAR my file manager... Konq is just bleh.... Does all of this sound ok? Or is there anything that you would tweak? Thanks, Chris

Konqueror files search bar
by ajh-valmer 07 Feb '22

Hello again, Konqueror with Buster Debian 10, had a files search bar above, on the right, just next to the address bar. (filter to see some files not all). This bar, very useful, has disappeared on Bullseye Debian 11. I don't see in Konqueror configuration, how to put it again... Happy sunday, André

Kmail SMTP Error - tdeio-smtp?
by Hunter Ellett 06 Feb '22

06 Feb '22

I am unable to send my emails to this group on Kmail due to the following error: "Authorization failed, Authentication support is not compiled into tdeio_smtp. authentication not supported" I've had this problem on FreeBSD and Devuan before where my emails wouldn't send but never got an error message. Usually it would start to work after some time. But here I get this error consistently, I even tried to rebuild tdepim and tdelibs. I don't know which package has tdeio_smtp but the Slackbuild seems to build without this support. -- ~ Hunter Sent from my Android device with K9 Mail

How to automatically "Suspend to RAM"?

Dear all, I am a long-time and happy user of the Trinity desktop, which is a wonderful continuation to KDE 3.x. I am try to sep up my laptop to automatically "Suspend to RAM" after a given time without user activity, but i can't figure out the setting. Could you please give me some pointers? The configuration: Thinkpad T400 (RAM 4go) Q4OS 3.15.2-n1 (Debian 10 Buster-based, 64bit distribution) The following interactive commands work: sudo systemctl suspend sudo bash && echo -n "mem" > /sys/power/state Best regards

Cheers Michele Hi Michele, /var/log/tdm.log exists but empty. /var/log/tdm.1.log : "info: Cannot open master configuration file /etc/trinity/tdm/tdmdistrc". tdmdistrc doesn't exist in this folder. I can login to tde-desktop with lightdm, not with tdm-trinity. (even after a dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity). Now I have a clear understanding what happens without to be able to repair. The file /run/user/1000/ICEauthority is : -rw------- 1 andre andre 205 22 déc. 17:18 ICEauthority It becomes automatically quickly : -rw------- 1 root root 205 22 déc. 17:18 ICEauthority, after I receive the error messages allready indicated, DCOPserver and /home/andre./.Xauthority not writable : -rw------- 1 andre andre 59 22 déc. 17:18 .Xauthority It seems that there is a conflict between two users, root and andre. Restore "classic" TDM look/functionality
by Hunter Ellett 06 Feb '22

06 Feb '22

In Slackware and also on FreeBSD (the latter if I recall), TDM has a different look than when I install it on something like Devuan for example. Particularly it has a rounded and transparent KDE4 "Oxygen" look to it, and the options in the Display Manager module do not work when this kind of TDM is installed, like adding a clock, the logo, or changing the widget style. Tdmtheme is not installed. I thought it was tdmtheme that changed it to look like this out of the box but it doesn't seem to be related. It looks to be the default in certain TDE ports. Secondly to keep from posting twice I also can't access the Display Manager module. If I click on it the window does not open, and I'm not sure what it depends on that I may be missing since this is on Slack. -- ~ Hunter Sent from my Android device with K9 Mail

Screen not blanking
by c. marlow 06 Feb '22

06 Feb '22

Fresh install of Debian 11 ( as of yesterday) Trinity Desktop 14 My screen is not going to sleep.... Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't. For instance: I took a nap earlier... The password box said the session was locked at 2:01 PM CST. At 3:00 the screen was still on!! Also when the screen does turn off, it takes WAYYYYYYYYY over the time that I have it set for to blank off and turn off the screen. I have it set for: 25 for screensaver 26 for display standby 26 for display suspend 26 min to power off the screen. Sometimes its almost or right at an hour before the screen blanks off. I didn't have this problem with Gnome DE on Debian. Thanks, Chris

Resend: Ubuntu 20.04 and problems with konqueror: copy and paste files to a USB stick does not work
by Uwe Brauer 05 Feb '22

05 Feb '22

Sorry for possible double posting but that message got rejected somehow, it seems: Hi A friend of mine has Ubuntu 20.04 running (the installation is a year old and so is the corresponding trinity version, if necessary I can provide the precise version). In any case my friend has problem of copying files to USB sticks using konqeror. (The copying works from the command line, most sticks have vfat.), by problem with copying I mean the following. In konqueror: The file is marked to be copied, then the USB stick is opened, but the menu entry for pasting is in grey and cannot be used. I had a look at it and found out that deleting the cache helped, but it seems only for a while. Is there any alternative to konqueror available? Nautilus works, but is very very ugly and not that intuitive. Regards Uwe Brauer

Dcopserver not loading
by Ken Heard 04 Feb '22

04 Feb '22

Very soon after I started to use the TDE 14.0.11 version I began receiving DCOP error messages, having the effect of preventing use of various applications like Firefox and LibreOffice. After online research and experimentation on my part I discovered that I could solve such preventions if before opening TDE I ran in a tty as root the following three commands: 'dcopserver -- serverid', which returned nothing, then 'dropserver' and finally again 'dcopserver -- serverid'. This time however that command returned something like the following: '[dcopserver] local/Morcom:/tmp/.ICE-unix/dcop5698-1636014592' >From this point on there were no longer any more DCOP error messages. I had full use of the TDE and various applications until when I next closed completely the computer. It is consequently my understanding that running the 'dcopserver' command is presumably required as part of the initial boot-up. If such is usually the case I would appreciate knowing what I need to do to have my computer, named Morcom, do so as well. Can anyone tell me? TDE Control Center is replacing utf8 characters in ~/.bashrc with trash
by Stefan Krusche 28 Jan '22

28 Jan '22

Hi all, I found that TCC does overwrite ~/.bashrc. From my level of proficiency that is a no-go and should not happen at all, especially not without informing the user. What happens: All utf8 characters in .bashrc get replaced with strange characters when GTK2 Fonts are changed from the TCC GUI. Reproduce: I can reproduce this behaviour on my system by simply changing the configuration in TCC -> Appearance and Themes -> GTK Style and Fonts -> GTK2 Fonts: from "Use my TDE fonts" to "Use another font" or the other way around. I confirmed this misbehaviour within a new, pristine user account with a default debian .bashrc where I inserted three lines with utf8 characters: $ diff utf8.bashrc utf8-mangled.bashrc --- utf8.bashrc 2022-01-18 10:21:23.700348782 +0100 +++ utf8-mangled.bashrc 2022-01-18 10:31:59.659323727 +0100 @@ -3,11 +3,11 @@ # for examples -# Test Umlaut a: >ä< +# Test Umlaut a: >ä< -# Test long hyphen: >–< +# Test long hyphen: >â< -# Test Euro currency symbol: >€< +# Test Euro currency symbol: >â¬< # If not running interactively, don't do anything case $- in Additional information: When the users .bashrc is owned by root then in ~/.xsession-errors of the user is reported this: [2022/01/18 10:24:59.374] TQFile::writeBlock: File (/home/user/.bashrc) not open (where "user" is the actual user name) Can anyone confirm this? I would then bugreport this phenomenon. Cheers, Stefan PS: I have been seeing this for years and never had a clue as to what causes it, phew! Now I caught it by accident just by observing the almost concurrent incidence of the phenomenon and changing GTK2 fonts in TCC.

POP!OS and bug reporting
by Philip Ashmore 27 Jan '22

hi there. I tried reporting a bug but was told: "Username or password is incorrect." Keen to proceed, I clicked on the password reset button and dutifully entered my email address. Then the web page stated that an email would be sent to me within 3 hours. That was days ago. By the way the bug was that installing TDE on POP!OS renders the installation unbootable, possibly something about POP!OS using systemd-boot. Thoughts? default directories names mangled
by deloptes 23 Jan '22

23 Jan '22

As I was reading in a thread "File Manager" about the standard XDG folders. I was wondering where I can file a bug. The bug is that on my desktop where I have installed KDE in 2002 I have the XDGs dirs properly displayed and in TCC they show up fine On a newly installed TDE (14.1) I have mangled characters and if I open TCC change something and press "Apply" it creates directories with ??????? From my experience the first one is double converted and the second one is in ASCII If I delete the directories in Konqueror they are recreated with mangled immediately. So who I see actually two bugs here - the one in TCC and the other in konqueror Can someone advise?

Permanent task locations?
by Michael 21 Jan '22

21 Jan '22

In the task bar you can move tasks’ positions forwards and back (Only if they are single items.). Is there anyway to set a permanent location for them? I’d like KMail to always be in position 1, and Konsole in position 2, Kwrite in 3, ... Currently if KMail gets closed and re-started then I have to [close all additional open messages and] move it back to the beginning of the task bar [and then re-open all the messages I just closed]. Just a irreverent wish... Best, Michael

I had earlier today ( a couple hours ago ) sat Thunar as my default file manager, and everything was working GREAT! I switched everything back to Konq but now I am getting " DCOP ERRORS" every time I click on anything. The only thing that doesn't throw up an error is Firefox ESR. I am trying to decide now, do I want to give TDE another shot, or go back to LXDE? I am in the process of salvaging my data and backing it up to nextcloud now. Chris

TDE Installation
by c. marlow 20 Jan '22

20 Jan '22

aka the Dan Youngquist method: Dan states in a recent email, that the way he installs TDE would be to install a MINIMAL XFCE installation and then install TDE Somebody stated you could install XFCE or MATE and then install TDE. What I have burned to a USB stick does not offer a minimal XFCE installation It only offers a full blown installation.. I think it's because Debian offers the mini iso version first, instead of the CD / DVD version first. And also, what I have burnt to a USB stick automatically comes with drivers. I accidentally downloaded the wrong Debian for my great aunts pc and it couldn't find the wireless card and I was like uh oh, and I had to go redownload Debian's ISO that had the drivers baked in to the ISO. I found this page: https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/debian-installer/ Would downloading the CD or DVD version offer me the minimal xfce installation? Thanks, Chris

Sorry in advance! :P Thanks, Chris

I also notice that while ~/.trinity/Autostart seems to always exist, and I knew that putting a link to a script there runs it at startup, directory ~/.trinity/shutdown did not exist (or I never noticed it) and it plays the same role for shutdown. Once again Trinity solves problems simply and with elegance :) TDE rules :)) Thierry

Run a script at TDE logout?
by Thierry de Coulon 14 Jan '22

14 Jan '22

Hello all, It seems at work they have decided to use Microsoft Office 365. The basic apps won't be a bother as I don't have to use them. Teams might be a trouble, however there is a Linux client and it seems to work ok. Unfortunately, in typical M$ way, Teams for Linux autostarts (these people can't believe you would not want to use their apps all the time). It autostarts by creatiing a teams.desktop file file in ~/.config/autostart. There is a X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true/false line enabling control of this, but it obviously works only on Gnome. I can remove the *.desktop file, but Teams will re-create it everytime it is run! Files run in .config/autostart are run before those in .trinity/autostart. Old style scripting in rc.local seems deprecated on Debian (Buster here). I've managed to create a systemd script to remove the desktop file at boot, which mostly satisfies my needs as I seldom just unlog, but I was wondering if there is a way to run a script when I log out (I have tried .bash_logout but it does not work)? The command will be executed with the /bin/sh shell. With most shells you may run sg from, you need to enclose multi-word commands in quotes. Another difference between newgrp and sg is that some shells treat newgrp specially, replacing themselves with a new instance of a shell that newgrp creates. This doesn't happen with sg, so upon exit from a sg command you are returned to your previous group ID.

Spam
by Dan Youngquist 10 Jan '22

tde-users is currently the main source of the spam I receive. In fact, all the spam in my Junk folder at the moment came from tde-users. Slavek, is it possible with this mailing list software to do the suggestion I made a couple months ago? That is, have new users set to "Moderated" until they've made a legitimate post. That's been 100% effective at eliminating spam on mailing lists I've managed. -- PGP key: http://homestead-products.com/pubkey.htm

complete TDE pkgs appropriate for my system?
by William Morder 10 Jan '22

10 Jan '22

Okay, so this is a strange request, but maybe others have thought the same thing. I believe somebody mentioned something about downloading the whole shebang, rather than trying to pick and choose. I like to have a folder with saved packages, for those times when internet is down, or when I do not have a connection. And I will be in that predicament probably a lot, due to some trips I have planned for destinations that are fairly unconnected to the modern world. Anyway ... I have more or less cloned my desktop system to my laptop, Trinity and all, looks and runs the same, so that much was successful. I do have a few minor issues which I'll bring up later, when I get more spare time. For now, that would be good, just a way to get apt-get or aptitude to download and install all the packages appropriate for my system. I can weed out what I don't want, and make a list of my preferences. Bill

Can't build tde-tqt3
by Mike 08 Jan '22

08 Jan '22

Hi TDE forum fellas, Since the kgtk-wrappers (yet) don't work for me regarding GTK 'file selection' dialogs (see earlier posts), I hope to have more luck with tde-tqt3; obtaining from here: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/tde-tqt3/ (Arch Linux x86_64) It was no problem editing the PKGBUILD for adapting to current version 14.0.11, downloading the appropriate sources and starting to build. Anyway, about 25 minutes compilation exits with this: ... ((final ~150 lines of output; hope you don't mind)) ... cd tooltip && make -f Makefile make[3]: Entering directory '/tmp/tde-tqt3/src/tqt3-trinity-14.0.11/examples/tooltip' make[3]: Nothing to be done for 'first'. make[3]: Leaving directory '/tmp/tde-tqt3/src/tqt3-trinity-14.0.11/examples/tooltip' cd toplevel && make -f Makefile make[3]: Entering directory '/tmp/tde-tqt3/src/tqt3-trinity-14.0.11/examples/toplevel' make[3]: Nothing to be done for 'first'. make[3]: Leaving directory '/tmp/tde-tqt3/src/tqt3-trinity-14.0.11/examples/toplevel' cd tux && make -f Makefile make[3]: Entering directory '/tmp/tde-tqt3/src/tqt3-trinity-14.0.11/examples/tux' make[3]: Nothing to be done for 'first'. make[3]: Leaving directory '/tmp/tde-tqt3/src/tqt3-trinity-14.0.11/examples/tux' cd widgets && make -f Makefile make[3]: Entering directory '/tmp/tde-tqt3/src/tqt3-trinity-14.0.11/examples/widgets' g++ -c -pipe -fvisibility=hidden -fvisibility-inlines-hidden -I/usr/include/mysql -I/usr/include/postgresql/server -I/usr/include/libiodbc -I/usr/include/tirpc -fno-exceptions -Wall -W -march=x86-64 -mtune=generic -O2 -pipe -fno-plt -fexceptions -Wp,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -Wformat -Werror=format-security -fstack-clash-protection -fcf-protection -Wp,-D_GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS -D_REENTRANT -DQT_NO_DEBUG -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -DQT_SHARED -I/tmp/tde-tqt3/src/tqt3-trinity-14.0.11/mkspecs/linux-g++-64 -I. -I/usr/include/freetype2 -I../aclock -I../dclock -I../../include -I/usr/X11R6/include -I.moc/release-shared-mt/ -o .obj/release-shared-mt/widgets.o widgets.cpp In file included from ../../include/ntqwindowdefs.h:47, from ../../include/ntqwidget.h:45, from ../../include/ntqdialog.h:45, from ../../include/ntqmessagebox.h:45, from widgets.cpp:10: ../../include/ntqstring.h: In member function 'TQCharRef TQCharRef::operator=(char)': ../../include/ntqstring.h:767:45: warning: implicitly-declared 'constexpr TQChar& TQChar::operator=(const TQChar&)' is deprecated [-Wdeprecated-copy] 767 | TQCharRef operator=(char c ) { s.ref(p)=c; No boot to TDE, error messages
by ajh-valmer 08 Jan '22

Sorry, me again, Important precisions, I receive these two messages on boot TDE : 1) The following installation problem was detected while tryng to start TDE : No write access to "/run/user/1000/ICEauthority". TDE is unable to start. 2) There was an error setting up inter-process communications for TDE. The message returned by the system was : could not read network connection list : "/home/andre/.DCOPserver_debian-room__0" Please check that dcopserver program is running ! If I correct : the write access for "/run/user/1000/ICEauthority", and read access for "/home/andre/.DCOPserver_debian-room__0" it works, but after the next boot, I receive the two same messages, I make the correction again... and next boot, idem... Thanks for your help. I'm sure that Slavek will give the solution :-) Cheers, André

Firefox strange behavior
by Mike 07 Jan '22

07 Jan '22

Hi all, having been testing Trinity for while & for the most of the time liking it! One annoying issue however is Firefox not working as expected – only in TDE, and not in/with other DEs/WMs, even KDE5/Plasma. For example, I can't save any web pages – neither via <Ctrl>+<S> nor right-clicking on "Save page as". It's the same with vanilla Firefox as well as with its fork Firedragon. Further though the latter doesn't prompt for not being the default web browser, Firefox does this always on start-up (because of Konqueror, I guess). And in both cases this can't be changed. What to do about it?

Thumbsup for TDE on devuan daedalus ... and new GTK3 nightmares
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 07 Jan '22

Hi all! I just did an upgrade from devuan chimaera to daedalus. Almost everything worked as I expeced, especially TDE runs flawless - big thumbsup! GTK3 is a PITA - just as expected: - GTK_CSD=0 not always works, some applications need extra caretaking (zim, ...). - Subpixel hinting for font rendering is fixed to full hinting, which traditionally gives horrible results. Both .config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini and .gtkrc-2.0 have gtk-xft-hintstyle="hintslight", but no use. So, apart from GTK this upgrade works like a charm :) Does anybody know how to fix subpixelhinting for GTK3? Should be: dpkg-reconfigure lightdm dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity Thierry

If is is, please, a link to the correct apt tde.list file please. kde & kmail-5.15 is buggier than a 10 day old road kill in August. And there is little help available on the kdepim mailing list. No one seems to know how its really supposed to work. An <a href="https://www.allassignmenthelperonline.com/">Assignment helper</a> tool can make a huge difference in your academic life. If you've ever had any doubts about your essay writing abilities, you should give them a shot at least once. Because a decent programmer will not only provide you with rapid essays, but it will also include material from reliable sources. The essays generated by a good tool are plagiarism-free. This implies you can submit them without first running them through Turnitin. There is only one thing to keep in mind: not all tools are created equal. If you don't find one that works, you'll be in a lot of trouble.

Is java assignment help services are real and provide reliable solutions?
by Kaylee Brown 29 Dec '21

29 Dec '21

Java assignments take a long time to complete, so students must plan ahead of time and work diligently to meet the deadline. Students can procrastinate or stray from the prescribed path, causing work to pile up. Finally, there is too much work and not enough time to accomplish the project. Java homework help is quite beneficial to students since it relieves tension. Whereas most people believe that java assignment help services (https://www.edumagnate.com/java-assignment-help.html) are fake and do not provide reliable solutions, students who have used them find them to be the most trustworthy and effective. You can also contact devoted assignment experts that can fulfill all of your criteria and assist you greatly with correct research and awareness. There are companies that can assist you with your assessment and ensure that you receive the highest possible score. As a result, enlisting the assistance of highly trained and experienced research paper writers to complete your task becomes a no-brainer. When they get stuck on an assignment, many students become frustrated. It takes their attention away from their studies and prevents them from concentrating on other duties. To avoid all of these headaches, you can get an online Java assignment helper which will not only assist you with high-quality assessment work but will also advise you on a few key points to consider. Java assignment helper will not only hand the paper but also verify the specifics. Furthermore, by enlisting the assistance of assignment professionals, you will be able to engage in academic events that you will otherwise miss.

wireless not working - new installation
by William Morder 27 Dec '21

27 Dec '21

Okay, so this happens to me kind of a lot, first on my desktop, now on this laptop to which I am transferring my system. On my desktop, I get round some of these problems with an external wifi adapter (an old C.Crane WiFire antenna). Whenever I pack up my desktop, then I will be able to try it out on the laptop, too, but for now that is a big hassle. Problem is, I actually have wireless with the laptop, and the signal is stronger than with my wifi antenna on my desktop. But after installing TDE and getting out of the xfce desktop, the wifi works through two or three reboots, then suddenly it says I have problems with dbus, or that I am not authorized to manage networking, etc. I enabled the non-free and contrib packages in the repositories, and I already got all the packages that I am supposed to need for wireless networking, and this helps ... for a while. But like I said, after a couple of reboots, the wireless disappears. I believe that it still works if I go into the xfce desktop, so why doesn't my tdenetworkmanager or wicd or anything seem to work? I've already gone through the usual troubleshooting tricks, iwconfig, ifconfig, etc. When I try to enable wireless, why do I get an error message that txpower is "wrong syntax"? Also, I expected that the name of the wireless connection would follow Beowulf/Buster with wlx-something. I hear that Chimaera/Bullseye is supposed to wlps20, but after installing TDE, I find that it has somehow reverted to Jessie-style names, wlan0 ... which doesn't seem right. I don't have anything but Devuan Chimaera installed. My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad 3 15.6", 8 gb DDR. Everything is factory, except that I upgraded the internal hard drive from a 128 gb to a 2 tb. It's one of those newer SSDs. Please feel free to trim. I just tried to include everything that seemed like it could be signficant. Thanks for any help or suggestions. Bill

Cannot open kwickshow and gwenview
by Ken Heard 25 Dec '21

25 Dec '21

Not only can these two applications not be opened from the TDE menu, but also can they not be opened when called for by Dolphin or Konqueror. When trying to open them from the menu, there is no response of any kind. When I want to look at jpgs with Dolphin the response is 'Kwickshow cannot be launched by Dolphin.' Likewise if I try to open them with Konqueror, the response is 'Gwenview cannot be launched by Konqueror.' It would appear that software needed to open these apps is missing. (I am installing -- or trying to install -- TDE R14.0.11 at first and lately now R14.0.12 [Experiment] on a new machine with Debian Bullseye.) I would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to solve this problem. Problems DCOP_SERVER after migration buster to Bullseye
by ajh-valmer 22 Dec '21

Hello, Just after the migration Debian Buster to Bullseye, 1) I cannot launch desktop-trinity automatically without login & password, as before with buster. The file /etc/tdm/tdmrc has the good lines to a have automatic login. 2) Many messages display errors about DCOP_SERVER not running, when I click on an application icon linked to trinity. (konqueror, konsole, kedit, kate... and many others...). (you can see the message on the attached file) "check if the "dcopserver" is working" Thanks for your help, Cheers, André

hello, Installed Debian Bullseye with trinity Desktop on a Laptop 64bits. Without TDM, this is : starting the XWindows trinity desktop form bash with the startx command, there is no problem, I can start various Desktops using Ctrl+Alt+Fx, where x is 1, 2, 3,.... If i enable TDM, i can only strat one session from TDM, keyboarding CXtrl+Alt+F1, i get the computer's starting log, with F2 or 3,..., i get a blank screen. On my i386 PC, i don't have the problem : with TDM installed, i still can access multiscreen desktop starts, for various users and also root login. mystery missing dependencies
by William Morder 17 Dec '21

17 Dec '21

Okay, so I managed to install Devuan Chimaera on my laptop. (Suddenly I remember why I hate other desktops!) After I got the system set up, I tried install the basic Trinity packages. (I copied my list from my desktop, which is Beowulf, but I changed my sources.list over to Chimaera/Bullseye.) I expect that some packages will change, but I keep a list of what I install, and in what order, so that it's easier to move over to a new machine. Or so one hopes ... So when I tried to install the basic Trinity packages, I kept getting an error message about unmet dependencies. Gradually I whittled down my list to just three packages: tde-trinity tdebase-trinity tdm-trinity. But I keep getting this same error message. The follow packages have unmet dependencies: tdemultimedia-trinity : Depends: libarts1-xine-trinity (>=4:14.0.11-0debian11.0.0.+0) but it is not installable But nowhere am I (yet) trying to install either of these packages! Maybe they are included in one of those that I am trying to install, but this message doesn't make sense. Help please ... Bill

OT - installing whonix / qubes ?
by William Morder 12 Dec '21

12 Dec '21

Sorry for the off-topic post, but I believe it was Mike, Michael, somebody here on the list, who recommended I try out Whonix. I did give it a brief try a few years ago, but don't remember much. Now, however, I have at last acquired a half-decent machine, 64-bit (Lenovo Ideapad 3 15.6" laptop), able to do the job. I hope I chose well. If I recall, one OS runs inside the other in a virtual machine ...? something like that. Anyway, if anybody can point me in the right direction, give me a few tips, then I think I'll be good to go. I've already managed to move through several different types of Linux distros, so I just need some advice for Whonix beginners. Already downloaded Qubes and Whonix iso images, in both Buster and Chimaera versions. Please feel free to write to my private email, so we don't clutter the list with my off-topic pursuits. ;-) Thanks for any help! Bill

TDE pre-installation issues and considerations
by Mike 11 Dec '21

11 Dec '21

Hi all! I am an Arch user on an old but fine 64-bit machine from about 2008. And that's one reason I might prefer TDE over mainstream Plasma/KDE, because it's probably much lighter on resources and has less overhead and dependencies. And since I am also a fan of the tiling WM XMonad, I want to make work both of them together; let's see if it's going to be XMonad inside TDE, or XMonad along with Trinity's KDE 3.5 apps. And I'm pretty sure they'll make a good team! Currently, I have disabled Plasma and simply run XMonad in EMWH desktop compliant mode (i.e. no KDE/Plasma) invoking single KDE apps, designed by GTK or GTK/Qt styles, and using alternative status bars. The virtual desktops are managed by "pcmanfm --desktop"; compositor is xcompmgr (or betimes compton, the legacy version of picom). That's my status quo. Soon, I am about to get rid of all of "modern" KDE, Plasma, and Qt5/6 stuff – prior to installing TDE's binaries! These are my prime resources of knowledge: [ https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Trinity#Binary_packages ] <https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Trinity#Binary_packages> [ https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unofficial_user_repositories#trinity ] <https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unofficial_user_repositories#trinity> [ http://trinitydesktop.org/ ] <http://trinitydesktop.org/> [ https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Release_Notes_For_R14.0.11 ] <https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Release_Notes_For_R14.0.11> Yet there are still a couple of issues and questions: (1) Failure of the Trinity repo integration --------------------------------------------- I followed the Arch wiki's instructions for adding key and repo. $ sudo -i # pacman-key --recv-keys 0x8685AD8B gpg: key C93AF1698685AD8B: public key "Trinity Desktop Environment Archive Signing Key" imported gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 786C63F330D7CB92: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 1EB2638FF56C0C53: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: key 1EB2638FF56C0C53: no user ID for key signature packet of class 10 gpg: marginals needed: 3 completes needed: 1 trust model: pgp gpg: depth: 0 valid: 1 signed: 7 trusted: 0-, 0q, 0n, 0m, 0f, 1u gpg: depth: 1 valid: 7 signed: 83 trusted: 1-, 0q, 0n, 6m, 0f, 0u gpg: depth: 2 valid: 79 signed: 26 trusted: 79-, 0q, 0n, 0m, 0f, 0u gpg: next "Trust-DB" validation on 2022-01-20 gpg: total number of keys processeed: 1 gpg: imported: 1 # joe /etc/pacman.conf ... So I wonder if there are any changes, or if the provided gpg key (and Arch's wiki) is outdated, and would like to ask for the latest valid one. (2) KDE 3.5 virtual desktop management --------------------------------------- I am also a fan of different wallpapers for the virtual desktops, "pcmanfm --desktop" can do that! – So, is KDE 3.5 able to create individual workspaces? If yes, I am probably going to run XMonad inside KDE with the "kdeConfig" module; c.f. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xmonad#KDE_and_xmonad https://wiki.haskell.org/Xmonad/Using_xmonad_in_KDE If no, I will first also trying to do the latter AND to load "pcmanfm --desktop" with a certain delay. – Or, I dispense with the KDE desktop and just run KDE apps. An example: As in [ http://trinitydesktop.org/faq/desktop.php#idm140487998295328 ] <http://trinitydesktop.org/faq/desktop.php#idm140487998295328>, does something like kstart --desktop 1 --activate --window "feh-bg1" 'feh --bg-scale /path/to/image1.file' kstart --desktop 2 --activate --window "feh-bg2" 'feh --bg-scale /path/to/image2.file' work (to have different walls on desktop #1 and #2)? (3) Conflicts with official Arch KDE/Plasma stuff? --------------------------------------------------- I wonder if there aren't any problems having both modern KDE/Plasma/Qt and Trinity's KDE 3.5/Qt packages in parallel? I don't intend to and would like to stay with pure Trinity stuff – but couldn't this happen by accident though: interfering dependency conflicts, or double versions of KDE apps? Thanks in advance! Hello all, I've been testing a Raspi 4. Works well with the Raspbian Desktop (it's running Raspbian Buster, latest update, with kernel 5.10.63 and TDE 14.0.12 (PSB). The problem is I can only get 1024x768. I've set the pi to 1920x1080 with raspi-config, then 1920x1080 does appear in Trinity Control Center, but choosing it results in a black screen. All this works with a Pi 3B+ (although I have not updated the distribution). Anyone running TDE on a Pi 4? Thierry

Marking spam
by J Leslie Turriff 03 Dec '21

03 Dec '21

When I originally set up Kmail, I used the Spam Wizard to handle spam. It puts it into a folder called 0_Spam? (0_ to keep it near the top of the folder list), but doesn't mark it as 'read' so that I know it's there. I can also use the Message => Apply Filter => Filter Classify as spam action to mark stuff that gets past the regular spam filter. Since at that point I've already decided that it's spam, it would be nice to have it mark it as 'read' in addition to putting it into 0_Spam?; is it possible to do that somehow? I can't install anything from the repo list until I update the keyfile, the one on your web page has expired or ? IDK. It should be updated to be the new one in the repo. Gene, Was it the standard Debian Bullseye installer or some variant and if so which? The net-installer with non-free stuff. Which mode did you run it in - expert, guided, other? Expert. Did you get to a screen similar to this? https://tecadmin.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/installing-debian11-image05… Exactly that. Did you check the last (standard utils box) and optionally (your choice) check the penultimate (ssh) box and leave all the other boxes unchecked? You especially do not want the first box (Desktop) checked if you're not installing a Desktop using this installer. gnome desktop was unchecked Is this where it "refused to proceed", if not where? What error did it give when it "refused to proceed"? It didn't, just kept looping back until I selected xfce4. --Mike ____________________________________________________ tde-users mailing list -- users(a)trinitydesktop.org<mailto:users@trinitydesktop.org> To unsubscribe send an email to users-leave(a)trinitydesktop.org<mailto:users-leave@trinitydesktop.org> Web mail archive available at https://mail.trinitydesktop.org/mailman3/hyperkitty/list/users@trinitydeskt…

Gene, What EXACTLY is the first thing that goes wrong after installing a MINIMAL Bullseye when you do PRECISELY WHAT try to install TDE? If you've already installed gdm3 or xfce4 or kde5 I don't want to know. If it's TDE you want why isn't it TDE you're installing? Quit yelling at me Mike. Try looking at the installer and tell me how to install tde from the installer. We are at the mercy of the installer which refused to proceed when I attempted to not install a gui desktop. If you want to yell at somebody, go yell at debian for not offering it. This works fine for a lot of people - I've done it dozens of times - and we don't end up with gdm3 or xfce4 or kde5 when we install TDE. If you try to rip it out later, it even threatens to remove the kernel. And TBT, I'm tired of being yelled at and chastised over what is an installer decision I have no control over even in the expert mode. --Mike ____________________________________________________ tde-users mailing list -- users(a)trinitydesktop.org<mailto:users@trinitydesktop.org> To unsubscribe send an email to users-leave(a)trinitydesktop.org<mailto:users-leave@trinitydesktop.org> Web mail archive available at https://mail.trinitydesktop.org/mailman3/hyperkitty/list/users@trinitydeskt…

This didn't used to be. I had the installer put xfce4 in for a gui, same as the stretch install on the 2T drive that killed itself, and tde installed and ran nicely alongside of xfce4 on stretch. Now there are only 6 trinity packages that will install without triggering a broken packages lockout. This is the 7nth bare metal install, and with the 1.9Tbyte raid10 taking several hours to format each time, it has not been fun. So atm I am back on kde5 and doing battle with windmills. Apt repository for Devuan
by Slávek Banko 02 Dec '21

02 Dec '21

Hi all, if you are using Devuan, you may have noticed with the release of R14.0.9 that there are newly available resources generated for Devuan distribution names in the apt repository. When entering a Trinity repository into the apt sources list, you no longer need to use equivalent Debian distribution names. The packages as such remain the same for both Debian and Devuan, as we still guard to maintain independence from systemd. See https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/DevuanInstall Cheers -- Slávek

trinity doesn't work
by Gene Heskett 01 Dec '21

01 Dec '21

This is the 4th time I have tried to send to the list but ff wants to insist I send it to mgb. So I'm going to compose this the last time. Re the sudo -E: from wheezy thru jessie and stretch its been required since X would not allow root to use it without it, but I just went to a buster machine and I'll be dipped, it worked without the -E on a buster/xfce4 install. But I've become quite fam with "sudo chown -R gene:gene /home/gene" to fix such wonky perms because of it. Why it took debian 3 major version updates to fix it boggles my mind. Now, where was I. stuck in a one window jail cuz I can't get trinity to load and work. What I do know is that if I'm not using gdm3, I lose sudo rights as lightdm and tdm-trinity all want an admin pw and that doesn't exist. my sudo pw doesn't work. So lets start, one step at a time, what do I do to fix this? Thanks Mike, gene

>apt is all you need for managing Debian packages, and your choice of >non-GUI editor for editing config files. All true IF you know exactly what you want. But synaptics ability to search is worth a lot. And I use nano, a lot. sudo nano runs anywhere. As pointed out previously this is a rootless install, and I am in the sudo group. But lightdm nor tdm-trinity know that so I can't use sudo then. So something is fubar, but what? Thanks Mike, Gene

I'd love to make that work Felix, but at the moment I'm bouncing between a shell, firefox and whatever I have the shell doing as I only have one, count 'em, workspace, IOW tde isn't working. I think its running either gnome or some leftovers from xfce4. And I lose sudo if I use a non gdm3 window manager. Thanks Felix, Gene

On Tue November 30 2021 02:46:14 Gene Heskett wrote: > <snipped> Hi Gene, Please keep replies on list so they're available for others to see and learn from or to correct my mistakes. I'm moving this back on list but privacy rules prevent me from quoting to the list what you sent me off list. Bullseye is a great choice here and now. You have told us that you have used "sudo -E ..." although you haven't told us why you used "-E". What "-E" does is run as root but on your own home folder, not root's. This can easily leave stuff in your home folder which is owned by root and cannot be handled by your regular user account and that can cause all kinds of breakage. You might be able to fix it with something like "chown -R ..." and "chgrp -R ..." but that might make things worse. You have told us that you have gdm3, lightdm, and tdm-trinity on this new install and you have also had kde installed but it is mostly removed now. That ought to work but it is not really a good idea. Think about what you need and only install what you need. Installing hundreds of unneeded packages creates a lot more security vulnerabilities than allowing a root login with a 16-character random password. You can always block ssh root logins without blocking console root logins because if the CIA is sitting at your physical keyboard you're pwned already mate. You really have two choices when installing Debian: a canned install or an expert install. If you choose a canned install you're not TTBOMK going to get RAID10. If you choose expert install you need to know what you're doing. Over the years I've used HW RAID1, HW RAID5, SW RAID1, and SW RAID5 but IIRC I've never used RAID10 and today IMNSHO LVM is much better. But again you have to know what you're doing and why. Whether you use RAID10 or LVM or mercury delay lines you're going to have options in the Debian installer to format each FILESYSTEM. You don't need to spend ten hours zeroing PARTITIONS. So my advice to you is make a plan, do everything in the simplest and most standard way possible except where you need something different, and document exactly what you plan, what you do, and what happens. We can't help you much if you spend a few hours knitting semi-random stitches and then want us to help you turn it into a sweater. One of the key decisions you will make will be systemd vs sysvinit. I use sysvinit. If in doubt you should use systemd because it is the canned standard solution and you don't want to deviate from that without good reason. Just like you don't want to use "sudo -E" without good reason. Good luck Gene, --Mike

Mike Bitd says what does this do that kmail can't? This is synchronous with the arrival of a mail, so kmail doesn't freeze for 5 to 15 seconds while it does it. Puts it all in the background and kmail only freezes long enough to go get it and sort it into the proper folder, a few milliseconds at worst case. Its all part of my incoming mail, reducing my part to a mouse click to go to the next unread msg. Lesson from a frustrated teacher: Computers are supposed to do work FOR you, not make more work. So make it do the drudgery stuff by itself. So I write bash scripts. One click to go to the next unread msg, one click to reply if I can help, and one click to send my reply after typing it. Whats not to like? And this script has been running here in various incarnations for at least a twenty years. Originally used dcop but that fell out of favor a decade+ back up the log. Or when I bailed out of fedora because fedora was always broken, but that was a good 15 years ago. /lesson. Thanks Mike, Gene

mailwatcher is this script: #!/bin/bash # set -x # this was a test, was /bin/sh above, but /bin/sh is a softlink to /bin/dash # REQUIRES your distros inotify-tools package, assume kde/kmail in use # but might be adaptable to other agents too # requires a ~/log directory, so mkdir it before running it # you will also need to either do the housekeeping of this file, or # figure out how to make logrotate do it for you.
