trinity doesn't work
by Gene Heskett 01 Dec '21

As a normal user do "grep '^root:' /etc/passwd". Don't post the result here. Does it end in /bin/bash or /usr/sbin/nologin or something else? Also if you haven't tried "sudo bash" please try that as it is only the same as "sudo -i" if root's login shell is bash. Which it is, /bin/bash. Next? Thanks Mike, Gene

Re: can't install trinity, synaptic says packages are broken
by Gene Heskett 29 Nov '21

So do I normally, using fetchmail to keep an imap server (dovecot) at my ISP empty. And I have that part workiing, but it will not install anything from R14 despite updating the keyring. Synaptic turns the doit button red and proclaims I have held, broken packages, but refuses to ID them. So just to get a gui, i've quite a bit of xfce4 installed but can't find anything that will assign multiple workspaces, so I'm stuck with only one shell at a time to tyry and see whats going on. My 7 gigs of old mail is because there are several lists I've never expired, so of it going back to 2002. Even getting xfce's default of 4 workspaces would be a huge help. And I'd be double blessed if I could install tde, the whole maryann. trying to run synaptic gets me this gets me a msgs that says use the broken filter to locate 3 broken packages, but theres no such "filter". clearing that and clicking on the fix-broken meno item gets me this: E: Problem executing scripts APT::Update::Post-Invoke-Success 'if /usr/bin/test -w /var/lib/command-not-found/ -a -e /usr/lib/cnf-update-db; then /usr/lib/cnf-update-db > /dev/null; fi' E: Sub-process returned an error code searching locate doesn't find cnf-update-db, but an "ls -l /usr/lib" shows: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 40 Jan 6 2021 cnf-update-db -> ../share/command-not-found/cnf-update-db drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 29 06:07 colobot lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 44 Jan 6 2021 command-not-found -> ../share/command-not-found/command-not-found And that leaves me bum-fuzzled. I could do another, 4th install but that is around an 8 hour job just to clear the raid10's. I did find thebroken filter finally: fig2dev mono-runtime-sgen python-is-python2 I'll see if they can be renoved. took some doing, then desktop-base had to be removed and desktop-trinity added, but now its updateing 263 trinity pkgs, I'll send this, quite FF and reboot to see if I'm making progress. In the meantime, Thanks hunter On Mon, 29 Nov, 2021 at 3:04 PM, Hunter Ellett via tde-users <users(a)trinitydesktop.org> wrote: To: tde users Cc: hunter2k1(a)disroot.org On November 29, 2021 1:11:24 PM CST, Gene Heskett <gheskett(a)shentel.net<mailto:gheskett@shentel.net>> wrote: >Some of kde did install but the new kmail 5something doesn't see 7 gigs of old mail, nor will it create ANYTHING not even a new folder. > > >So this is from ff doing webmail, which I would rather use for target practice. > > >Does anyone have a fix for either problem? Hi Gene, Are you talking about tde or kde? Im assuming tde by the title and the context of your message but then you say "kmail 5something". Are you using Plasma Kmail on TDE? Clearing this up will help us diagnose the problem. Either way, 7 GB of mail is a lot. Im guessing this is POP which I know nothing about, for I use IMAP.

Some of kde did install but the new kmail 5something doesn't see 7 gigs of old mail, nor will it create ANYTHING not even a new folder. So this is from ff doing webmail, which I would rather use for target practice. Does anyone have a fix for either problem? Thanks all. Gene

Higher resolution versions of wallpapers
by Hunter Ellett 29 Nov '21

29 Nov '21

Out of curiosity, does anyone know the source of some of the wallpapers used in Trinity? Some of them are in 4:3 such as Fulmine, Triple Gears, etc. and they're quite low quality on newer 1080p+ monitors. I really like these and wonder if there's higher resolution versions anywhere that aren't stretched.

Cannot open encrypted portable storage drives
by Ken Heard 21 Nov '21

21 Nov '21

Whenever I try to open such devices as USB flash drives or solid state drives, the 'Unlock storage device' window appears and asks me to enter the password. I do so, whereupon the window expands at the bottom with the following message: 'Feature only available with HAL.' I find that message strange, as I thought that HAL had been superseded by Dbus, but perhaps I am mistaken. In any event I would appreciate it if somebody could inform me as to how to open such encrypted devices in a box with Debian Bullseye and TDE. by Ken Heard 20 Nov '21

I installed vuescan on my new computer which has already Debian Bullseye and TDE installed. Vuescan was installed without error, as the message on the monitor ended with a '0' to indicate a successful installation. When however I try to open vuescan, the message returned is 'tdeinit cannot install viewscan'. I would consequently welcome advice as to what to do to get vuescan working. Strange tdm is not starting
by deloptes 18 Nov '21

18 Nov '21

Hi I have very strange problem with TDM. I have USB that I use in HP ElitePro. When I created this and boot into it, all worked fine. After some time I found docking station and it also worked fine. Then after 1-2 months in which also kernel was updated I tried to start without docking station and tdm process is running but I do not have any screen to login. With the docking station it is starting properly (I mean I see TDM login screen on both displays) This makes me scratch my head. Has someone any idea where to look? Hello, Wicd (Wireless Interface Connection Daemon), is a very good graphic tool to connect to a WiFi, with the quality of the signal (dbm), number of bars, very pratical and easy to use... Unfortunately, it is not implemented any more with the last Linux distributions, as Debian Bullseye... Is it possible for the Trinity community to create a similar tool ? Interfaces are : GTK et ncurses, and Python language, and not sure, package from Gnome desktop. Thanks, Cheers. André

R14.0.11 cannot install trinity-desktop or trinity-desktop-all on Fedora 35 due to missing python2-exif package.
by lorecastcauli＠gmail.com 15 Nov '21

15 Nov '21

Morning, I'm trying to install Trinity Desktop R14.0.11 on my Fedora 35 Workstation x86_64 computer but installation stops when trying to install either of the packages in Subject. This is due to `trinity-konq-plugins`, a dependency of `trinity-tdeaddons` which then is a dependency of `trinity-desktop`, requiring `python2-exif`, which doesn't currently exist apparently. I tried looking online but the only evidence I could find was the package's page on `pkgs.org`, citing it was in the f33 repo for Trinity (not there anymore). I'm surprised this isn't mentioned anywhere I could see and I remember this being an issue on f34 also (for obvious reasons), so this is definitely not _that_ recent. Can anyone help me on this? Thanks

polkitd + udisksd not starting
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 11 Nov '21

Hi all! One of these GNOMEs just hit me with a club again: By unknown reason polkitd & udisksd do not start on system startup - and I don't find the reason why. I have to place in my rc.local: /usr/libexec/polkitd & /usr/libexec/udisks2/udisksd & Then at least mounting/unmounting works. NetworkManager does not work - it complains about insufficient permissions. Now his system was not used for ~ 5 months and it did not show these problems prior to the update. Anybody has a clue where to start? Oh, and it's devuan chimera. Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

[Possibly OT] Pipewire "popping"
by Hunter Ellett 10 Nov '21

10 Nov '21

Does anyone else here use Pipewire with TDE? I've never used Pipewire until just a few days ago, but I heard lots of good things about it. On Linux, I have an audio issue that wasn't present with OSS on FreeBSD (which makes me think it may be ALSA-related), where the sound likes to "pop" randomly. It's especially annoying when listening to music or playing games. I thought it may just be ALSA/Pulseaudio, but even with Pipewire (which is supposed to harmonously combine all sound systems) I still have the popping. I guess with TDE on top of the mix I have ALSA, Arts, and Pulseaudio installed. I am running Debian Sid and followed a guide on fixing the "pop" in Pipewire. Most of the tweaks I tried are in pipewire-pulse.conf (setting pulse.min.freq and pulse.default.freq to lower values) but none of them work. I'm just curious if anyone else has had a similar experience and figured out how to fix it. -- ~ Hunter

Bluetooth Headphone Microphone
by Edward 08 Nov '21

08 Nov '21

In addition to my previous question re startup sounds not sounding all the time, I have a question regarding Bluetooth. I am able to use the Bluetooth Manager to connect a pair of headphones and can hear audio through BT, it sounds excellent. The one thing I can't get working is the microphone that is built into BT headphones. I know they are primarily designed for phone calls via a smartphone, but is it possible to use the BT headphone microphone through the PC, for example, if you were having an online Zoom/Skype/Jitsi meeting? The local Linux group has been having virtual meetings every month and although my Logitech headphones with microphone boom (USB-connected) work perfectly, I would like to try wireless/Bluetooth - if it's even possible. I attempted this with the previous distro (Fedora) and was not successful. Thanks again.

by Slávek Banko 01 Nov '21

Hi all, I would like to thank for all your echo, echo, echo,... You are also who helps the development go forward! Thanks to the development team, mirrors and infrastructure managers, translators, and also users whose testing and reporting issues is also an important part. It is great that we have such a coherent community here. Now, after the release of R14.0.11, we are going to open a window to work on R14.0.12. There are already several pull-requests that are waiting to merge. And also our translators do not stop translating, where the translations will also be merged into the upcoming release. If you used the Preliminary Stable Builds repository only temporarily, and you prefer to stick on the official final release, it is now the best time to switch to the official repository. The packages in both repositories will be identical for some time, so it is smooth to change the apt source if you want. Otherwise, we will be very happy if you help us in testing the upcoming release. Along with the release of R14.0.11, the building of packages for Debian 8.x (Jessie) and Ubuntu 14.04.x (Trusty) will be stopped. So the upcoming R14.0.12 will no longer be available for these distributions - the packages will not be available in the PSB repository. If you are still using one of these distributions, you should consider upgrading to a newer version. I intend to begin building R14.0.12 preliminary packages on November 7th. Thank you for your support! Cheers -- Slávek

TDM not starting in Debian Sid (Preliminary Stable)
by Hunter Ellett 01 Nov '21

01 Nov '21

Hello friends, I switched from FreeBSD back to Debian for several reasons: * More software (not necessarily just Trinity), especially with flatpaks * More documentation since I continued to have "unsolved mysteries" on FreeBSD * Greater performance and hardware support * GNU/Linux just as free as in freedom as FreeBSD, I was a bit one sided before But I have an issue. I have installed most core components of Trinity (tdebase, tdeaccessibility, tdegraphics etc.) but I always start in a tty when booting. I tried to execute the starttde script but it doesnt work. Furthermore if I add it to .xinitrc and run startx, it doesn't work. If I remove my home .xinitrc file and use startx, the session will start but I can't use TDM at all. Running the script directly is a lot more verbose, telling me that pretty much nothing can connect to the X server. I have seen this talked about before in the ML but it seems like they solved it. I used to use the preliminary testing branch and it worked but I decided to go with stable this time and can't seem to get TDM to work at all. That pesky X server.

Doing my usual daily update/upgrade, I just now encountered this: The following packages have been kept back: kubuntu-default-settings-trinity I presume it's some kind of metapackage and that it has no effect on the functioning of my system. It's the first error of this sort that I've seen in years, though, so I thought I'd pass it along. Appimage
by dep 28 Oct '21

28 Oct '21

Greets, everybody . . . I've got a book coming on, and one of the rituals attendant to that is searching for an outliner/organizational application into which I can dump notes and such by chapter and conduct some of the other housekeeping involved. So I've gone through the bespoke applications that supposedly perform these functions and have learned that as with the last book a couple of years ago they all suck. I don't think that anyone involved with any of them has ever written anything for publication -- they've certainly not written anything resembling instructions for use of their applications. One of these applications, a thing called "Joplin," is an appimage. I'd encountered one of these before; Geeqie releases some versions in that form, which I tried. I like Geeqie, but I don't much like appimages, though I'm not sure I can tell you why. So I thought I'd ask here what people think of appimages, both the idea of them and the way they're made and used in practice, in case there's a difference. My vague distaste for them runs counter to reservations I had when moving to Linux from OS/2 and similar DOS-centric operating systems. My complaint then was that with DOS, Windows (at the time a DOS desktop) and OS/2 put a particular application's files all in one directory, Word in \word, Lotus in \lotus, and so on, so banishing an application involved nuking a directory and that was that. (I still think that more things ought to be in their own directories under /opt, and am glad that TDE does this; that prejudice came about when we were building KDE from source a time or two a week and having the whole thing blow up was not unheard of; deleting the failed build and renaming the existing, working version reduced the risk.) Sorry for the digression. Having not given appimages a lot of thought but seeing that they're becoming more common, just thought I'd ask if there are any strong reasons for or against them. Are appimages a good idea for anything beyond test-drive purposes? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Using Message => Edit Message
by J Leslie Turriff 28 Oct '21

28 Oct '21

When viewing a received message, in the menu bar entry is the Edit Message option, which allows one to modify the mail item's text. Because almost all HTML email uses Sans-Serif fonts (an anethema to me) and Kmail provides no way to override this, I thought that I might be able to use Edit Message to change the imbedded font-family to something more friendly. I can do that, and the result is saved in my Drafts folder, but when I open it I see just the raw HTML; Kmail doesn't seem to want to format it as it did the original. Does anyone know how to make Kmail display such a modified message properly? Where does TDE store its mime-type information?
by J Leslie Turriff 28 Oct '21

28 Oct '21

Once again, missing application/octet-stream has revisited me. Where does TDE store this information, and is there a way to lock that particular entry so that it doesn't disappear now and again? There must be a bug somewhere in TDE's mime handling routines that causes it to delete this entry when one is adding other entries to the table, but I haven't a clue as to which component a bug report should be opened... Trinity IRC - konversation - onion connection
by William Morder 23 Oct '21

23 Oct '21

Something weird, good for a laugh. The server irc.libera.chat and its variants bans me even before I figure out how to join any IRC room. It seemed strange, but a little searching finds out that it is my ISP (not myself) that is blocked, for maintaining an open proxy server: I was referred to some page that gave my IP as 170.39.170.101, so I did a whois lookup, and yup, that address goes back to my ISP, monkeybrains. They have tor servers at: 209.141.41.225 209.141.56.96 209.185.120.173 In an earlier post, under some other topic, I mentioned this. Of course I block all these IP addresses myself, since I don't know why my ISP would maintain Tor servers (for surveillance, or just to be helpful?), but it seems inherently insecure to use these tor servers. Thus I am forced to run Konversation or some other IRC client over Tor. If "they" (whoever "they" are, "out there") wish to prevent bad things from happening on the internet, all it does it encourage more people to use onion links, which is probably good for us users, but maybe not what "they" intended. I did already look up the pages about how to set it up. I created my own self-signed certificate, copied it to the appropriate places, but now I am stumped. I found instructions here for setting up Konversation: https://libera.chat/guides/certfp.html but it might be intended for KDE5's version of Konversation, not for TDE. Also I went through these pages: https://libera.chat/guides/connect#accessing-liberachat-via-tor Other IRC clients, so far, are less user-friendly than Konversation, and I like to stick with Trinity where possible. Also still trying to figure out SASL, and cannot find the public key. I don't know if this is for irc.libera.chat or palladium.libera.chat (which is what their webpage says to use). I followed instructions to configure torrc to use the onion link, but so far no luck. I assume that there must be something basic that I am missing. I've used lots of chat clients like Kopete and Psi-Plus and Pidgin (and Trillian, in Windoze), so I know how to get them to do what I want, but I've never used IRC. Neither Kopete nor Psi-Plus seem to work for me, and ksirc left me unenthusiastic, but I am willing to try whatever works. Any help or suggestions or links are welcome. Bill

3 Reasons To Pursue Information Technology As A Career
by ethanjacktaylor949＠gmail.com 22 Oct '21

22 Oct '21

Informational technology is one of the best and in-demand industries in the world. However, students often get worried about the assignments related to information technology, and they compose poor assignments because they shy away from asking for <a href="https://myassignmenthelp.com/oxford-referencing.php">Oxford Referencing Guide</a>. Moreover, students often do not know which course to pursue after finishing school, so they must perform deep research before getting through a course. Here are the top three reasons to pursue this course: 1.Variety in the career choice If you pursue IT management, you can have different career opportunities like computer network architect, database administrator and many more. In addition, you can choose other options and become successful in them. During your college degree course, you need to write a dissertation about IT, and for that, you can seek help online with phrases like <a href="https://myassignmenthelp.com/au/cdr/cdr-engineers-australia.html">CDR Engineers Australia</a>. Once you type this phrase, you can find several online dissertation writing services that can help you prepare a winning dissertation in a short time. 2.Practical course where you can perceive what you are studying Informational technology management course is a combination of theoretical and practical study. You have to study both case studies and do practical work, so you need to understand the applicability of the concepts through real-life examples. The things you learn through practical work and case studies help you learn the information quicker than other forms, and it remains in mind for a longer time. While working on the case studies and assignments, you can find some areas which are difficult to understand; you can opt for an online service to get solutions for those areas by searching for <a href="https://myassignmenthelp.com/cheap-assignment-help.html">Cheap Assignment Help</a>. 3.The course entails problem-solving skills With the advancement in technology and changing environment, companies are always aware of it, and they look for a candidate who is skilled in the latest technology. You can also take <a href="https://myassignmenthelp.com/au/perth-essay-assignment-writers-help.html">Assignment Help Perth</a>. Therefore, it is important to know how to increase your thinking process and face all obstacles without dropping your objective. Therefore, this course focuses on enhancing problem-solving skills. The above-mentioned points can help students have a clear understanding of information technology. Ref: https://gitlab.wacren.net/snippets/1250

stupid question - where's the public key?

When I search for "public key Trinity Desktop Environment" or the like, I get nothing useful. I assume that this is something different from the trinity keyring for the package repositories. I tried to connect to #trinity-desktop on IRC (using their onion link), but I get this message: [15:26] [Info] Looking for server libera75jm6of4wxpxt4aynol3xjmbtxgfyjpu34ss4d7r7q2v5zrpyd.onion:6697... I did already look up these pages: https://libera.chat/guides/connect#accessing-liberachat-via-tor https://libera.chat/guides/certfp.html but I am still missing something here. If I recall, no password is required for the IRC group, and I followed what Nik and Slavek said, SSL connection on port 6697. #trinity-desktop irc.libera.chat:6697 Also, do I need to register my user name somewhere? The default default is my own system user name, which I don't want, so I created a new identity. Here is their onion address, if anybody else wants to try it: libera75jm6of4wxpxt4aynol3xjmbtxgfyjpu34ss4d7r7q2v5zrpyd.onion Any help is appreciated. Bill

Actually, that last one was just such an email, and this one, too, even though it *looks* like a reply. I created a new email, and filled in all the fields by hand. Also there were two others that I sent you: one beginning "I fell asleep" and the other "And a little P.S.", where I prematurely declared that Gene's reference headers appeared in both those emails. (It did in the first, so naturally I assumed that it would be repeated in the second.) That small detail doesn't support blaming my templates, and it makes no sense that two emails, created in the same way, contain those big differences. Bill

And a little P.S. I created these last two emails from scratch, not a reply, not a template, filled in all the fields with my own two reasonably clean hands, and I *still* get Gene's email address in the reference headers. Another email sent out to a friend only a couple days ago (completely unrelated) contains no references to Gene on the TDE list, nor to person B. So it definitely seems to have some connection to the TDE mailing list. If so, then how and why? Bill

IMO webp needs to be added into the tdeio part of tdelibs and may be kuickshow or some plugin to handle it. As I see there are libraries available (in Debian). However this is development effort that someone has to commit to. Knowing the structure of TDE a bit, it would be possible to get into DEV (14.1), but the question is still regarding the effort. Usually the one that wants also does (at least from my experience) and Slavek, Michele and others are friendly to help. Regarding the other features it is again development effort and the same applies here, although it is only part of extending kuickshow.

Having run the little suggested program to clean up the pop-up errors at TDE start, a number of Very Bad Things have happened. First, my KMenu is *entirely* depopulated. Second, I cannot send mail -- I'm sending this via a webapp. If I try to open, say, a file in KEdit, I get Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: tdelauncher said: Unknown protocol 'file'. And so on. Anybody know how to undo whatever /opt/trinity/bin/r14-xdg-update hath wrought? adding webp support to kuickshow
by Christian Schmitz 14 Oct '21

14 Oct '21

Hi everyone I am a TDE user, and i use normally kuickshow to see photos in a folder. I noted that .webp format become popular and is not supported by kuickshow. Other thing that i ask add is 4 shortcut into menu: 1) Edit ( jump to gimp or another editor) 2) Go to folder.. 3) copy to.... 4) move to.... Why? Many times i download cell phone photos (lot of photos) and use the kuickshow to choose the good ones or classify the photos. Sadly the names are usually more than 12~15 numbers hard to remember (year month day hour minute second millisecond and more). kmail fonts changed when showing email in raw format
by Stefan Krusche 14 Oct '21

14 Oct '21

Good Day, since ever when I looked at the raw email contents it has been shown with a rather tiny font. I never found out how to change that. So I took it as hard-coded or using the globally configured fonts for all TDE apps (TDE control center -> appearance -> fonts -> general) which I didn't want to change. Just now or since a day or since the last update it appears that emails in raw format are shown with another font, the one that is configured as Fixed width: Monospace 10 (that seems also to be the default in a new TDE installation). I'm not aware of having changed something. I'm quite sure that it hasn't been like that before because the tiny font which had been used to show email raw format has bothered me a bit all the time and wasn't the one for "Fixed Width" but rather the one for "General" (which was tiny in my configuration. So, what has changed? I tried to find out in gitea to look up changes in kmail but found nothing referring to this. Last change to kmail seems to have been done eight months ago. Kind regards, curiously, Stefan

App no longer on TDE menu
by Edward 13 Oct '21

13 Oct '21

I had to uninstall and reinstall firefox-mozilla-build (from the Ubuntuzilla repository) to correct an issue. Once this process was completed, I noticed the Firefox entry is now *not* on the TDE Internet menu. I am using the 14.0.11pre packages and was wondering if that could be why? Emergency apparently over
by dep 12 Oct '21

12 Oct '21

Ran Synaptic and reinstalled great gobs of TDE -- libs, base, anything that looked as if it might be pertinent. Logged out. Logged back in. Menu restored. If this message sends, then that problem is also solved. Thanks, Mavridis! Oh, and still got the r14 errors, all three of them. In that I rarely reboot -- though they're an annoyance when I do, and they indicate something wrong -- I can live with them. btw, I don't think that I'm operating packages from different versions of TDE, though if something got dropped from the TDE distribution I suppose I'd still have an older version. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Two more issues
by Edward 12 Oct '21

12 Oct '21

Where I have Firefox installed from the Ubuntuzilla repository and Chromium installed from snap, neither browser is listed when /update-alternatives --config x-www-browser/ is accessed, it only lists Konqueror. Is this correct behavior since Firefox and Chromium are not /native/ Debian packages? The other issue: I have /meteo-qt/ launching at desktop startup, this is an app(let) that when used with an API key from OpenWeather, displays the local weather with an icon. The weather information coming in from it is from my hometown, where TDE's weather applet lists the local cities that have airports and pulls in the weather from the nearest airport station. Both reports have indicated different temperatures, but I like using it. The problem here, is that meteo-qt appears to be launching at TDE startup - multiple times. I have seen as many as four of its icons on the TDE panel and I have to Exit out of the extras, leaving just one. On LXQT, it only loads in once. Is there something I can look at WRT the meteo-qt issue? Thanks again. -- TDE: 14.0.11pre Debian: 11.1 (bullseye, and64) Linux. A Continual Learning Experience.

trying to make konversation work
by dep 10 Oct '21

10 Oct '21

Happy Sunday. Facing the alternatives of going outside on a beautiful afternoon so as to simultaneously feed the ticks and make the grass shorter or staying inside and trying to figure out what's wrong with my Konversation installation, I've chosen the latter, at least until it gets so annoying that losing blood to and gaining infection from arachnid parasites becomes more attractive. (There's a sales slogan: "Preferable to Lyme disease!") When I fire up Konversation I get a screen that says this, over and over as time passes: [quote] [11:52] [Info] Looking for server ircs://irc.libera.chat:6667... [11:52] [Error] Connection to Server ircs://irc.libera.chat lost: name lookup has failed. [11:52] [Info] Trying to reconnect to ircs://irc.libera.chat in 10 seconds. [11:53] [Info] Looking for server ircs://irc.libera.chat:6667... [11:53] [Error] Connection to Server ircs://irc.libera.chat lost: name lookup has failed. [11:53] [Info] Trying to reconnect to ircs://irc.libera.chat in 10 seconds. [11:53] [Info] Looking for server ircs://irc.libera.chat:6667... [11:53] [Error] Connection to Server ircs://irc.libera.chat lost: name lookup has failed. [11:53] [Info] Trying to reconnect to ircs://irc.libera.chat in 10 seconds. [/quote] If I kill the "connection" and go to File > Server List > Libera.Chat and click "Edit" to take a look at things, I'm first challenged for a password -- I have none -- and if I look at the details of #trinity-desktop I'm challenged for a password again -- still don't have one. I do see under "Default Identity" something called Auto Identity with a service called "nickserve" and a password of eight dots, so apparently this was set up at some point. And looking in the logs I can confirm that I've connected with (or in the case of libera.chat, at least tried to connect), to wit: [quote] konversation/logs/freenode.log freenode_#gemini-pda.log freenode_#jollamobile.log freenode_#mer-meeting.log freenode_#mer.log freenode_#nemomobile-porters.log freenode_#nemomobile.log freenode_#planer.log freenode_#sailfishos.log ircs.log libera.chat.log [/quote] It turns out that I've tried to connect to libera.chat before, according to the log, on June 24. (I don't remember doing this and can't imagine why I would have other than to fire it up and see what was there. In that this exciting experiment got ended after four minutes -- same error as above, but it might have taken me a few minutes to realize that closing it doesn't really close it, just moves it to a tiny kicker icon; RMB on that is needed to extinguish the thing.) The logs tell me that I've had no problem connecting in the pre-snit past to freenode, where the Gemini and Sailfish chat was really useful in configuring the then-new Gemini running Sailfish. Virtually instant responses, but that was because we were all trying to achieve pretty much the same goal, and as discoveries were made they became available. But I digress. What I cannot determine is whether my VPN use -- I have ProtonVPN, one of the few real VPNs, not a no-longer-working Netflix scam -- figures into it not working now. Looking at the Livera.Chat website, I see that they want irc.libera.chat, not ircs. And port 6697, not 6667. I changed these, and: [quote] [12:23] [Info] Looking for server irc://irc.libera.chat:6697... [12:23] [Error] Connection to Server irc://irc.libera.chat lost: name lookup has failed. [12:23] [Info] Trying to reconnect to irc://irc.libera.chat in 10 seconds. [12:23] [Info] Looking for server irc://irc.libera.chat:6697... [12:23] [Error] Connection to Server irc://irc.libera.chat lost: name lookup has failed. [12:23] [Info] Trying to reconnect to irc://irc.libera.chat in 10 seconds. [12:23] [Info] Looking for server irc://irc.libera.chat:6697... [12:23] [Error] Connection to Server irc://irc.libera.chat lost: name lookup has failed. [/quote] etc. This is scarcely of much importance -- if chat is going to be used to rail on, it's of minimal interest to me, But it exists and I thought I'd take a look. Of course, having anything on my machine that doesn't work irritates the hell out of me, though not as much as, say, a case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Am I doing anything in my configuration that's obviously in error? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Hey Hunter, I wandered around matrix.org, and it’s pretty confusing as to what it actually does. Would you mind providing some links that give a good high level summary of what this Matrix thing is? What it provides (is it some variant of forum software?)? What a person would need to do to be able to use it? And how you envision it being able to replace the TDE mailing lists? Centralised EU censorship blocks mails !?
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 08 Oct '21

08 Oct '21

Hi all! Maybe some have alredy noticed: the new EU censorship regime is randomly blocking mails to mailinglist like TDE. I just had a talk with my mail provider and it's not encouraging. e.g: My last reply to the list with the link from hunters mail (I cannot place the link in here, 'cause it blocks this mail) was blocked from sending by the providers SMTP server as spam. GMX deleted the mail without any error message. For now the filters work on the message body, not the mail headers. So my question: Can we set up a gnupgp public key to the list, so that the mails cannot be suppressed by the cencorship mail content filters? The encrypted mails can be decryptied automaticly and the fed into the mailinglist. Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

Weird Kicker, Titlebar, mouse pointer behavior R14.0.11(DEVELOPMENT)
by dep 08 Oct '21

08 Oct '21

Following this morning's apt upgrades and a reboot for unrelated reasons, I've encounted unexpected behavior with parts of TDE. First, when the desktop starts, the mouse pointer normally becomes considerably smaller, reflecting the change from whatever the login screen resolution is to the TDE desktop resolution for my 1920x2160 screen, but now it stays big. The Kicker panel and its icons remain the size they've always been, but the font both for Kicker applications -- taskbar, calendar, the actual menu in KMenu -- have become minuscule. Really tiny, as in 6pt. tiny. The title bar font has also become much smaller. There are no changes I've found in the behavior of the applications themselves. In fact, when I move the mouse pointer into an application it reverts to the normally smaller size. So this appears to apply to the desktop, window decorations, and Kicker only. I've made no configuration changes. Any idea where I should look to fix what seems to have gotten broken? I presume there's some setting that the items mentioned abnove have in common, but damned if I have been able to figure out what it is. I'm running R14.0.11(DEVELOPMENT), which is pretty much always stable. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

This time I want to install something that works with TDE, and preferably not running systemd. Requirements: - my PC is a low-end machine with Intel i3 CPU - my Linux admin experience is low to medium (been using Linux for about 20 years, but mostly "if it works, don't fiddle with it") - I want to run TDE. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance, Steve

My sense of him is that he is one of those stuck-back-in-the-1960s hippies who never moved on. I mean, he was still living in student residence dormitories (I believe it was) at his university until a couple years ago (aged in his mid-60s, but still living like a university student). And, like many a crusty old hippie I know from the generation before myself, he doesn't recognize that what sounded cool and hep back in the 1960s sounds, to a younger generation, inappropriate or offensive. People don't talk like that any more, but he is tone-deaf. He is one of that original pantheon of MIT geeks and hackers (in the "pure" sense of the word), and created emacs (I think it was), and other stuff that is fundamental to our present technology. So I give him due respect, but I can also see how he upsets some people, because he irked me, too. Still, on this basic idea, he is right, and it's getting harder to evade that point. Users can own their data only if they own their machines, and if the software is free/libre; to protect our communications and data, and to preserve our privacy, we must use encryption. Otherwise, we will slip gradually into having no privacy at all, then attempts to preserve our privacy are criminalized. It really comes down to a choice between one or the other. Then he fell into trouble with the "cancel culture" and Me-Too movement, etc., because he said some things that were objectionable. In any case, if he had thought twice about his words, he might have saved himself much pain and suffering, as his indiscretions got him removed from some positions (though now semi-rehabilitated and reinstated?), and also he lost his student housing arrangements, and now is living who knows where; although according to his home page he is now giving talks in Europe. Removing menu items
by Edward 03 Oct '21

03 Oct '21

I have an interesting problem. I have the Thunderbird and Firefox builds from the Ubuntuzilla repo for Ubuntu/Debian installed on both of my desktops. I've discovered that once these packages are uninstalled, either via Synaptic, or the command line, the app's entries are not removed from the TDE Internet menu. I have a second desktop environment installed (LXQt, which is what was used to install Debian from the image) and I noticed the same thing on their Internet menu. There is no easy way to remove the entries from LXQT as there is no GUI to edit the menu that I am aware of. Does TDE have something like this? The only other option I see is to wipe out everything on the computers and reinstall Linux from scratch, which is something I would rather not do. As for Ubuntuzilla, they have a support forum at Ubuntu, but I am not creating an Ubuntu One account just for this. Thanks in advance. -- Linux. A Continual Learning Experience. tde powersave: looking for a hook ..
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 21 Sep '21

21 Sep '21

Hi all! Is there a way to tell if TDE has just turned on the display after sending it to sleep? Maybe a hook, a program, whatever? Reason is that on a T460 the backlight control needs to write the brigtness value twize to restore it to its inital value after DPMS turned the display off, otherwise it's at ~ 50% and the user needs to increase the value manually - which is espectially anoying on these Notebooks when the primary function of the function keys is "be a function key". My workaround for now is "xset dpms 0 0 0: xset s off" - which does a fine job in keeping the display lit, but TDE cannot send the display to suspend as this also needs written 2 times to actually work. The fun part is that when the display is fully lit then the the user only need one write cyle to change the brighness. Kmail doesn't show Spam tools in my toolbar
by J Leslie Turriff 17 Sep '21

17 Sep '21

For quite a long time now (two releases?), though I have the tools for Spam/Unspam in my toolbar configuration, they don't actually appear in the toolbar. (See attached screenshot.) Why is this? (They appear in the context menu, but the toolbar would be more convenient.) Is there a way to delete a KMail profile, so a brand new profile (using KWallet, etc.) can be created from scratch? I've looked in various directories, including hidden and found nothing obvious. Thanks. Ed -- Linux. A Continual Learning Experience. TDE: R14.0.11-pre - Debian: 11 (amd64)

FreeBSD 13.0 Trinity Port: Update on pinentry-tqt error
by Hunter E. 14 Sep '21

14 Sep '21

Hey everyone, I am back once again. I've reinstalled FreeBSD 13.0-RELEASE and am working on fixing the FBSD port of TDE as I go along with building it, recording everything that happens so that we may be able to end the weird snags that occur in it once and for all. I ran into the usual problem with pinentry-tqt where it stops and says to set MAKE_JOBS_UNSAFE=yes and try again. I ran it once again with MAKE_JOBS_UNSAFE=yes and this time it stopped with different output and told me to run "aclocal", so I went into the pinentry-tqt work directory and did such. Now I went back to the big makefile where I was and started back. It made it much further and the output was different yet again, this time giving me more insight on what was going on. At this point I also found out you need to have the package 'texinfo' to avoid a "makeinfo not found" error. It looks like the problem is caused by libgpg-error in some way. I used the script tool to record the terminal output and attached it to this email. libgpg-error on my system is version 1.42, which is higher than the minimum version of 1.16 it says is needed so I am dumbfounded.

On maintaining message marks
by Gene Heskett 14 Sep '21

14 Sep '21

Greetings all; One small item about kmail has bugged me for many years, and its time I fussed about it. The "it" I refer to is that when kmail rebuilds an index, it wipes out your carefully set message marks like "important" or "action item", losing those flags you set so it was easily findable later. The addition of the ability to save those, and search for them later by a better method than visually scanning the message list looking for those marks, would be the most usefull addition to kmails abilities I can imagine. Thank you. Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. Vivaldi/Chromium printing in grayscale
by Edward 06 Sep '21

06 Sep '21

Since the upgrade to Debian 11 and TDE 14.0.11-pre, if I try to print something using either the Vivaldi (using stable or snapshot) or Chromium browsers, it prints to the HP printer in grayscale. Only Firefox and Thunderbird will correctly print in color. The printer is connected to the PC via Ethernet, this is the only way Chromium and Vivaldi will see the printer, but in the TDE Control Center, the printer is listed twice, once with the local IP address and one without. The entry with the IP address was added using HPLIP. If I remove both entries and use TDE to connect the printer via USB, the Vivaldi and Chromium browsers do not see the printer, the only print option is to Save to PDF. Firefox and Thunderbird still see them fine. HPLIP will not otherwise install the printer via USB (something called avahi-browser is missing). However, it appears TDE is automatically installing the printer regardless of the connection, without any user intervention. Is this grayscale issue, a known issue?? Thanks. -- Linux. Kmail connections
by Edward 05 Sep '21

05 Sep '21

Hi everyone. I'm not too happy that neither Debian nor the Ubuntuzilla repository have made Thunderbird 91 (now on 91.0.3) available after almost a month since 91.0 was released. I obviously do not know what could be holding it up. Does TDE's KMail offer persistent/cached (?) connections like Thunderbird does - with the app open/minimized if an e-mail comes in (IMAP accounts), it's automatically retrieved? Thanks in advance. -- Linux. A Continual Learning Experience. TDE: R14.0.11-pre - Debian: 11 (amd64)

Hi! :-) Does someone know about the bug tracker on gitea: Is it possible to have mail notifications? I have activated the related options, but no mail notifications. Only if you login to gitea, it informs you of any messages you have. This way, some developer may request from you additional information, but you'll never know (unless you login to gitea). G.

About not so removable removable media
by Thierry de Coulon 01 Sep '21

01 Sep '21

Hello all, In Configure Desktop - Behaviour, one can define what objects appear on the desktop. There is one catch however: More machines today use sd or micro-sd cards as mass storage (Raspi is an example, but my notebooks also do). If I choose to show mounted removable media, I get my fstab mounted partitions on the desktop, and if I don't want these, I can't get the dynamicaly mounted USB stick to show. I doubt there is a way to make a difference between an fstab mounted "removable media" and a dynamicaly mounted one? Thierry

/me blocked too
by Mike Bird 31 Aug '21

31 Aug '21

Hmmm. My reply to Nik explaining why he was blocked was blocked. I'm sending this to the list and hoping Slávek will eventually unblock them both. Apparently SORBS just now decided to list my mail server because of a single spam sent on the 7th of May. Unfortunately my mail logs don't go back that far to see what they're complaining about or why they just listed it today instead of back in May. Hopefully Slávek can trim his RBL tests down to just a few of the more reliable services. --Mike
