everything pretty much upgraded, except for . . .
by dep 02 Jun '21

. . . protonvpn, which i half expected (it blew up on 18.04 -> 20,04 on another machine here, too) and the sound system, to the extent that the little kmixer icon in kicker has a black stripe across it, as if it's in mourning for Nik's troubles of a few days ago. the whole thing has worked so well and for so ling that i've forgotten even where to look. guesses? all i know at this point is aforementioned apparent bereavement. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://www.athensnews.com/opinion/columns/the_view_from_mudsock_heights/

while all this stuff is installing . . .
by dep 02 Jun '21

02 Jun '21

. . . i'm reminded that running sudo apt-get dist-upgrade isn't done until it has been invoked twice with a "no packages to upgrade" message. it works in fits and starts until then. and i'm noticing the downloading of thousands of packages that i do not use and will never use. yes, i use some gnome applications. no, i do not now run nor have i ever willingly run the gnome desktop, nor unity, nor kde-post-3x. surely i don't need the whole damned things in order to use a few applications. i understand an s-load of libraries and such, but my favoring synaptic doesn't imply my need to 40mb of gnome wallpapers. and, fact is, for the few gnome applications i run, i'd far rather have stock TDE furniture (crollbars, etc.) than the silly crap the gnomes think is oh, so cute (possibly because they've never used a computer to do actual work). okay, end of rant. grrr. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://www.athensnews.com/opinion/columns/the_view_from_mudsock_heights/

upgrade question
by dep 02 Jun '21

02 Jun '21

greets, folks . . . i'm about to upgrade my ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 and, as has been my (mostly successful) practice, this involves changing the sources lists, in this case "bionic" to "focal" and running the usual update-upgrade routine. all seems to be going well but for this: N: Skipping acquire of configured file 'main/binary-i386/Packages' as repository 'http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/trinity-r14.0.0/ubuntu focal InRelease' doesn't support architecture 'i386' N: Skipping acquire of configured file 'main/binary-i386/Packages' as repository 'http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/trinity-builddeps-r14.0.0/ubun… focal InRelease' doesn't support architecture 'i386' going back over my sources files yet again, i see no reference to architecture at all, never mind i386. before i pull the trigger i want to figure out what this is and whether it will break things -- i know far quicker ways of breaking things, if that were what i wanted to do, which it isn't. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://www.athensnews.com/opinion/columns/the_view_from_mudsock_heights/

Which desktop?
by J Leslie Turriff 31 May '21

31 May '21

Is there a way, while starting a program, to tell it which desktop to appear on (before it opens its window)? I looked at the various Window-specific settings (right-click the mini-icon in the menu bar), and there's lots of things that can be set there, but not the desktop. I also looked at kdcop for several kinds of windows, but if there's something in there, I can't recognize it. How to select the default soundcard ?
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 30 May '21

Ok, another TDE/ALSA soundcard thingie: I have 3 soundcards on the system: $ cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [MID ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel MID HDA Intel MID at 0xf3120000 irq 37 1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia HDA NVidia at 0xf3000000 irq 17 2 [Creative ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Creative HDA Creative at 0xf3200000 irq 16 Headpones are on card #2 - which is also the default soundcard: $ cat /etc/asound.conf defaults.pcm.card 2 defaults.ctl.card 2 With this in place all programs use #2 as default soundcard. There's just one exception: kmix. The kmmix systrayicon uses #0 - always. As do the VolUp/VolDown keys and mousewheel-over-kmix-icon. Now my question is: kow do I persuade kmix to use #2 as default and not #0 ? Any idea? Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

(Possibly OT) Firefox footers
by Edward 27 May '21

27 May '21

I have installed Mozilla builds of Firefox and Thunderbird on one of my TDE-Debian systems. When printing/print previewing an e-mail with Thunderbird, the time displayed in the footer is correctly in the 12-hour format with AM or PM. in Firefox, the time is displayed in 24-hour format. Thunderbird picks up the time from the system time, which I believe is set to 12-hours, since the TDE clock is displaying the time with AM/PM. But Firefox apparently isn't. Is there in something I can check in TDE that will show if the system on 12-hour AM/PM time, or is what the clock is displaying, just that? Thanks in advance. -- Linux. And another thing
by dep 25 May '21

25 May '21

No idea if this is a feature request or what. I'm dealing with an enormous directory that contains numerous subdirectories many of which contain subdirectories of their own, and so on. For some uses it would be very good to be able to tell at a glance which ones contain subdirectories. From the foggy distant past I remember some version of something wherein the icons changed color or had an asterisk or something when there were subdirectories present. So. Does anyone know of a file manager that has this feature? Or . . . Is there perhaps an icon set that would enable this feature? Or . . . Might this be added in some future release of TDE? Or . . . Is it just plain impossible with the current state of things? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://www.athensnews.com/opinion/columns/the_view_from_mudsock_heights/

How to change volume increment/decrement value

Hi all, I just ran into this again: Where can I change the volume incerment/decremet value? ksmserver crashes during logout
by J Leslie Turriff 25 May '21

25 May '21

Sometimes (not always) when I logout from my TDE session, ksmserver crashes and throws up a crash dialog, offering to send a report for support; but by that point it's not able to actually send such a report. The message I see in the dialog is | The application The TDE Session Manager (ksmserver) crashed and caused the Signal 11 (SIGSEV) It offers to send a crash report, and I can generate the trace, but it hangs when I try to send it (I presume via KMail, which is already gone). There's also a 'Save as' button which displays a file dialog, but it's only partially on the screen, and the window is not movable, so I can't fill in a filename. :-( Is there a way to collect the data from another login account (e.g. root)? Other (?) xdg-open problem
by Thierry de Coulon 24 May '21

24 May '21

No idea if this is linked to the other xdg-open issues, but: At work we use software to telework and teach from home when necessary. This tool uses jitsi for the video part. If I use jitsi directly, everything is OK. If I click the "Call" button that, I imagine, starts jitsi with the correct "address", I get a window saying: Open xdg-open? https://kinaps1.gyb.ch wants to open this application [] Always allow kinaps1.gyb.ch to open links of this type in the associated app Clicking the "Open xdsg-open" button simply starts another instance of the browser. This happens whatever browser I use - although xdg-open always starts my default browser. Where - or what - should I look to understan what xdg-open is trying to do? Thierry

Tip: Keeping Find dialog windows from opening over text
by J Leslie Turriff 24 May '21

24 May '21

When searching in Kate/KWrite/KEdit/etc., the dialog window opens by default in the middle of the text window, hiding potential matches. If, in the 'Find' dialog window, one clicks on the left icon in the application's menu bar and go to Advanced => 'Special window settings' and enables 'Placement', 'Force', 'Under Mouse' in the Geometry tab, then goes to the Window tab and changes 'Window class' to 'Unimportant' (and makes sure that 'Window role' is 'searchdialog'), the Find window will then open centered on wherever the cursor is placed, instead of the middle of the text window. Sharing mail folders between two local users

Should I just blindly remove all entries that begin with 'kde-'? (Not the ones that begin with 'tde-kde-', presumably.) Do they have something to do with the .desktop files that appear in ~/Desktop/? This thing is a frustrating nuisance because there's effectively NOTHING beyond a few cryptic entries in Release Notes and the pop-up messages (which can't be copied, and don't seem to be saved anywhere. (Why is that?) if there is any documentation concerning this, I can't find it in the Wiki (beyond "Upgrading from KDE3 or from TDE 3.5.x to R14.0.x" in "Tips and Tricks", which seems to be pertinent but says nothing about recovering from errors), nor in the Documentation section. No feedback when rceives imap mail
by Thierry de Coulon 19 May '21

19 May '21

Hello all, I've got a little problem. At work they recently changed their email system for Office365. I did manage to setup an imap account in kmail, and this account works, BUT: When I get a message there, I get no notification. While all other accounts get their messages in Inbox, or the relevent directory indicated there is mail, the imap account shows nothing, so if I don't think to look I may miss important messages. I had found a workaround by setting up Thunderbird on a raspberry pi. Thunderbird autoconfigures for this account (of course at work they did not give me the informations to connect, as we are supposed to be using MacOS or Windows with application that don't require these) and I forwarded the messages to my regular mail account. However Thunderbird is a nightmare when it comes to changing the password, and the work password must be changed every month... so for the time being Thunderbird no more forwards anything. I'll take a look at Evolution for the pi, but it would actually be easier if I could just get informed that a mail arrived on the imap account. Am I missing some setup, or is it normal that imap doesn't give any feedback (I normaly use pop for my accounts). Thierry

Thunderbird 78.10.1 was released almost two weeks ago and Debian has not updated the package as of last night. Matroska-Theora video playing
by Echedey López Romero 08 May '21

Good afternoon from Spain, I have checked Kaffeine, Noatun, Kaboodle, Codeine and KMplayer as video players for Matroska contained Theora videos. In Kaffeine and KMplayer I got the audio playing but in any of them the full video was supported. I wanted to know if there was some support being worked in format support in any of the video players and which was the most promisings. As a workaround, I changed the container of the videos to OGV using ffmpeg built-in "copy codec" which got the video working at least in Kaffeine (KMplayer has some issues changing the size of the window and only a part of the video is showed). -- Regards, Echedey, Lopez Romero () ascii ribbon campaign - against html e-mail /\ www.asciiribbon.org - against proprietary attachments

How to configure Hotkey combination for konsole session
by Stefan Krusche 07 May '21

07 May '21

Good Day Everyone, I want to change a hotkey combination ( Win + T ) that I have been using for a specific konsole session. When I assign that combination to another program via kmenuedit, it gets "assigned" but when hit, only the previously assigned konsole session gets started. I remember that kmenuedit used to issue a warning when one tried to use a hotkey combination which had already been assigned, but reassigns it anyway when told to do so (click OK). That didn't happen now when I assigned the hotkey combination that has been in use to start that konsole session to another application. Now, I can't seem to remember how and where I configured TDE to use the above-mentioned key-combo (Win+T) to that specific konsole session. I can't find that key-combo in kmenuedit either anymore. Has anybody an idea or hint how/where hotkey combos für konsole sessions could also be configured? Any thoughts appreciated, thanks. Kind regards, Stefan

KMail SSL vs TLS
by Mike Bird 06 May '21

06 May '21

KMail account setup security settings includes a dialog of which the upper part looks like the attached image. Now my understanding is that TLS is basically a newer version of SSL. TLS 1 was reportedly just a minor improvement on SSL 3. However that is not the way these options seem to behave. I'm starting to think that the "SSL" option actually uses SSL or TLS, and the "TLS" option is actually to use STARTTLS. STARTTLS ia a magic command used in an unencrypted session to spawn a new encrypted session. For example with IMAP it kinda switches you up from port 143 to port 993. So is the "TLS" option actually TLS or is it STARTTLS? Thanks, --Mike

TDE R14.0.10 released, new target R14.0.11 will start soon...
by Slávek Banko 02 May '21

02 May '21

Hi all, now, after the release of R14.0.10, we are going to open a window to work on R14.0.11. There are already several pull-requests that were already merged. And also our translators do not stop translating, when the translations will also be merged into the upcoming release. If you used the Preliminary Stable Builds repository only temporarily, and you prefer to stick on the official final release, it is now the best time to switch to the official repository. The packages in both repositories will be identical for some time, so it is smooth to change the apt source if you want. Otherwise, we will be very happy if you help us in testing the upcoming release. Along with the release of R14.0.10, the building of packages for Debian 7.x (Wheezy) and Ubuntu 19.10 (Eoan) will be stopped. So the upcoming R14.0.11 will no longer be available for these distributions - the packages will not be available in the PSB repository. If you are still using one of these distributions, you should consider upgrading to a newer version. I intend to begin building R14.0.11 preliminary packages on May 9th. Thank you for your attention :) Cheers -- Slávek

KPDF printing direction
by Christian Schmitz 26 Apr '21

26 Apr '21

Hi everyone: I want request a feature when is printing PDFs, allow set the PRINT DIRECTION. I am having a trouble with KPDF. When the page is apaised ( horizontal) KDPF print the right first and not the left. Normally when someone print entire page this is not a problem. This become a problem when you need print portions of sheet. For example labels like in the attached PDF. Those documents allow print up to 3 labels in same page. Print, cut the head and print again, and again. But right now the kpdf send 2/3 of page in bank and start the real print. This demand use a entire page. So the max paper usage is 2 labels by page, and only when i print 2 labels in the same day. (Anti ecological printing) Modify the PDF is not possible, this is given for a very large online sales website ( like amazon or ebay but from Argentine) Best Regards Christian -- Be Free, Be Linux --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: trinity-users-unsubscribe(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net For additional commands, e-mail: trinity-users-help(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net Read list messages on the web archive: http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/ Please remember not to top-post: http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/mailing_lists/#top-posting

Just make sure you're choosing the correct hdmi output. Some ATI have more than one. Also examine your settings in Pavucontrol carefully. Make sure digital output stuff isn't on (see attached images). Note how some are labeled and unplugged. Hope this helps. Kate

TDE on bullseye RC1
by Gene Heskett 22 Apr '21

22 Apr '21

Greetings all; I need the address line to put in the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/TDE.list file to get TDE for a fresh bullseye install as I intend to update this stretch install on a fresh 500GB SSD sometime in the next couple weeks. If its available for bullseye yet, if not and there is a showstopper, I'd appreciate knowing that too. Thank you. I have not found any way to configure the menu editor to search multiple directories. Hope it helps. Regards Pascal

For products that I install from third-party sources (not from OpenSuSE repositories), when their packaging/installers don't install application icons into /usr/share/icons... Openshot crashing after python/pango update

Hello Humans, AIs, Aliens and others Openshot started crashing after some python and pango updates. Below is the crash output. geogebra crashes in Ubuntu 20.04 and the corresponding trinity version

Hi I run successfully 5.0.620.0-50 on Ubuntu 16.04. kdiskfree-trinity - displays info as 0 for some hard drives
by William Morder 02 Apr '21

02 Apr '21

It is a puzzle. This utility will display information about external hard drives, which are variously formatted (as ext3, ntfs and vfat or exfat), and also displays info for internal hard drives which are formatted as ext3; also, my root and home directories, which are formatted as ext4. Yet it displays two other internal hard drives (formatted as ext4) as unmounted (though they are mounted and completely accessible for me as sole user); also it displays their information as 0 capacity and 0 used/free. I am not worried about running out of space (yet), as these are new hard drives, 6 TB and 8 TB, but eventually I would like to know. I know that I can use command-line to get the information, but I would like just to be able to look at kdf without the hassle of running commands. I am running Devuan Beowulf, just updated the repos and installed upgraded packages. The hardware is a Frankenstein's monster, but otherwise is running without issues. Any clues about what's going on? Thanks for any help. Bill

Storage Media mounter and Konqueror
by J Leslie Turriff 02 Apr '21

02 Apr '21

In the Control Center, at Internet and Network => Web Browser => User Interface, there is a check box, 'Open as tab in existing Konqueror...' (see attachment). At Peripherals => Storage Media => Unmounted DVD I have set 'Open with Konqueror' as the default action (see attachment). The wording of the description of the effect of that check box leads me to believe that inserting a DVD into my drive should open a new tab in Konqueror, but it always opens a new window (see attachment). This looks like a bug to me. Your thoughts? Leslie -- openSUSE Leap 15.2 x86_64 Qt: 3.5.0 TDE: R14.0.9 tde-config: 1.0

Adding additional DNS addresses
by Edward 30 Mar '21

30 Mar '21

I went into TCC/Internet & Network/Network Settings, added the two IP addresses for Cloudflare's DNS service and applied them. The apps will then use the Cloudflare DNS addresses only for that session, if logging out and rebooting, it will revert back to the ISP's DNS servers upon the next login. I was under the impression that such settings (which I have seen in other distros) were independent of whatever is in the system's resolv.conf file. Is there a way of permanently saving the other DNS addresses? The ISP's gateway software has their DNS addresses 'grayed out' (for lack of a better term) and they cannot be changed in the gateway. Cloudflare's DNS service has a faster response time than the ISP's, from here. Thanks in advance. -- Linux. A Continual Learning Experience.

[tde-devels] [opensuse] missing window decorations

21 Mar '21

Which package(s) provide this? I have one installation where they are missing. Clearing caches didn't help. Which file(s) in ~/.trinity/share/config/ can be deleted to affect only window decorations and whatever else might be causing this? I sent this to the users list more than 60 hours ago and got zero responses so far. At the time it was in 15.2. This time I upgraded a freshly updated 15.2, then cloned it and upgraded the clone to 15.3 (keeping the 15.2 TDE repos), after which this occurred. I have others with both 15.2 and 15.3-using-15.2's-14.0.9 that are behaving as expected. -- Evolution as taught in public schools, like religion, is based on faith, not on science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. Print A4 documents on Letter paper from KPDF
by Edward 20 Mar '21

20 Mar '21

I deleted the e-mails on this subject, so I could not reply directly to one. I had a similiar issue where I was trying to print a PDF that was sized for US Legal (8½ by 14 inches) on US Letter (8½ by 11 inches). KPDF would not do this. I am running Debian 10 and installed qpdfview, which shows up on the TDE menu under Office as 'tabbed document viewer (qpdfview)'. When printing with qpdfview, on the Print dialog, there is an icon labeled 'Options'. Selecting this will display three tabs, one of them is 'Extended Options'. This tab contains a checkbox 'Fit to page' and it successfully shrunk it down to Letter size on the resulting printout. I just discovered that Evince is also installed, on the same TDE Office menu as 'Document Viewer'. Evince uses the system print dialog when printing, which includes options to shrink or fit to page. -- Linux. A Continual Learning Experience.

Hi all! Just in case anybody runs into the "libreoffice has no menubar"-problem: installing dbus-x11 will bring the menubar back. An other thing that you might run ointo: libreoffice by default uses x11 fallback interface, which is exceptionally ugly. You have to install "libreoffice-gtk3" and set "SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3" in .profile to get a reasonably usabe GUI. FAS 32 and #
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 17 Mar '21

17 Mar '21

Hi all! I just ran into this problem: konqueror can open any file with a '#' in it - if the file is not on a dos partition. e.g.: "12345#hallo.txt" on a ext4 opens fine. The same file on a FAT32 does not open - konqeror tries to open a file "12345". "ls" on said FAT32 filesystem shows the correct name "12345#hallo.txt", so I suspect a konqueror problem. Still having issues with Firefox and Thunderbird on TDE
by Edward 16 Mar '21

16 Mar '21

Unfortunately, I am still having issues with Thunderbird and Firefox, where Thunderbird creates Blogs & News Feeds, instead of sending a link for Firefox to open. But if Thunderbird mysteriously behaves as expected and it sends the link to Firefox to open, Firefox will then display it's not the default web browser, yet running a command to check the default browser, shows it's Firefox. I have attached a screengrab of the two windows. Is there any harm in uninstalling Konqueror from TDE and using something else as a file manager? The only other solution I see, would be to uninstall both Firefox and Thunderbird and use Vivaldi and it's mail client (after it's turned on) and use that from now on. OS: Debian 10 stable Thanks in advance. -- Linux. A Continual Learning Experience.

Hi Thierry, can't reply using the web interface but am on the new list now using a different email address. Copied your reply into this post and my reply to you is at the bottom. Hi Nigel, Not having sudo (Debian and su here) I can't reproduce your problem. In my tede however, konqueror as root is started a different way: konqueror --profile filemanagement but it it is started as root (advanced options -> Run as a different user -> root) Thierry ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi Thierry, Thanks for your reply. Which TDE version do you have on your Debian install? Mine is TDE R14.0.9 which has only recently been released according to Slavek. To get konquerorsu on the desktop menu you need to go to /opt/trinity/share/applications/tde/konquerorsu.desktop obviously as root. Open the konquerorsu.desktop file in a text editor. At the bottom of the file there is an entry "NoDisplay=true" . That is why it's not by default on the desktop menu. Change true to false. Save the changes. Log out and Log back in and you will see on the menu list for "System" at the top of the list a new entry "Superuser" which extends to "File Manager - Super User Mode" That is what I clicked on, entered my password and discovered that konquerorsu was not working. It does work on my other distros. So next I tried it from Konsole as you correctly said, using in my case "sudo konqueror --profile filemanagement" Same result. Konqueror opened but showing no directories as on the screeshot that I attached last time. Let me know which TDE version you are using. I think I'll post this problem to the devels list as it's beginning to look like a bug in R14.0.9 Thanks again for you reply and stay safe, Nigel.

Print A4 documents on Letter paper from KPDF

I want to print some pages from a British magazine I'm subscribed to (Linux Format), but the pages, of course, are size A4, but I'm in the USA and my paper is smaller. Correction; it just takes a looong time to load the entire magazine, and there's no feedback while it does so. However, once it's loaded, the Print Preview button gives me the option of shrinking pages by a percentage, but not 'shrink-to-fit'; and it's not clear if that applies to the actual printing, or just to the previewing. Konquerorsu fails to show directories on startup

Xubuntu 16.04.7 with TDE R14.0.9 Problem: Konqueror in superuser mode opens with menu and location bar but no view, only a blank area where all the directories should be. Doh! See attached screenshot. From the start: I changed the bottom of the desktop file (hide) from true to false so that konqueror su would show on the menu. Clicked on the icon and password requester opened. entered password which it said was wrong, then saw it wanted root password. Next installed Tdesudo and tried it again. Password ok now and konqueror opened but devoid of any content. Next started it from Konsole with a bunch of errors on the output and the same visual result when konquerorsu opened. see attachment Konsole-output-no-view-on-16.04.7.txt The other attachment is from opening it from Konsole on my 12.04 install. It shows a few errors but konquerorsu works fine as it always has done on other installs including my old Fedora Core 3 with KDE 3.4.2-1.fc3.1.legacy Red Hat that I'm mailing from. Anybody with a solution to the problem? I don't know if you will get this as I've been unable to move my subscription from the old list to the new one. Kpdf
by phiebie＠drei.at 11 Mar '21

11 Mar '21

This is my favourite PDF-viewer and as such I have in my mimeinfo.cache the entry "application/pdf=kpdf.desktop". Works perfect....until I update libreoffice-draw or google-chrome. At that moment the kpdf-entry gets erased and instead of it 'draw' or 'chrome' appears or even both. And I have to correct this entry manually again and again. Is there a possibility to add in the installscript of kpdf the same mechanism as in chrome and draw - a delete/replace statement? Regards, Peter.

Install not possible from Ubuntu Live CD's
by martin.bost＠netcologne.de 04 Mar '21

04 Mar '21

I followed the link to Ubuntu Live CD's with Trinity Desktop (http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/cdimages/ubuntu/) where I found two versions of a Live CD: tde-14.0.8-ubuntu-20.04-desktop-amd64.iso 2020-Apr-27 23:16:49 1.6G application/x-iso9660-image and tde-14.0.9-ubuntu-20.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso 2020-Nov-06 04:36:35 1.6G application/x-iso9660-image I made USB install sticks for both of them and found the same error: both can be started without problems on different notebooks (Sony VAIO, Lenovo T520, Samsung NC10) and run smooth and error free from the stick. Whenever I try to do an installation - started the Live CD in the mode with possible install - on each of the nb's I always end up without a starting install process directly out of the start of the image but end up in a Trinity Desktop where I find links to install Ubuntu with Trinity. But when I use of the menu entries nothing happens and no message is shown. By fetching the install entry's command line out of the menu editor and calling it from a command line nothing is shown too. And when I => sudo -i and then => --preserve-env=DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS,XDG_RUNTIME_DIR sh -c 'ubiquity gtk_ui' I only get the message "Could not find command-not-found database. Run 'sudo apt update' to populate it. --preserve-env=DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS,XDG_RUNTIME_DIR: command not found" By running only the part "ubiquity gtk_ui" again I do not receive any message and an install is not started. The hole process of starting the image from the stick looks very similar as a normal install process for Ubuntu where the installation is directly started after choosing this option from the images start menu. When I do this with the Trinity images the install process is NOT started. Both versions do exactly the same. It would be very nice to get help on this because I figured out that the combination of Ubuntu 20.04 and Trinity 14.x even when started from a stick after boot run more but fast enough to be used as a very good alternative to Kubuntu even on old hardware like a Samsung Netbook NC10 from 2011 with 2 GB RAM and ARM450 CPU. So it would be nice to have the option to install from the Live CD's. Many thanks in advance !!!

Notes on 14.1.0
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 03 Mar '21

Hi all! I did a dist-upgrade yesterday on my devuan chimaera+tde14.1 machines. These are the things that I noticed: - TDE cannot mount CD/DVD any more, it gives an error "mount: /media/cdrom0: mount point does not exist.". I am not sure if that was already a problem on 14.0.x some time ago. however, I can mount CD/DVD from commandline. - Opening a media folder at it's actual mountpoint is gorgeous. Automouning with this feature is a great relieve, thank you! - I'd like to always open konqueror at the medias mountpount :) Is there an way to do this in 14.1 at the moment? Oh, and 14.1 is rock solid, haven't had a single issue on any machine I moved over. Great job! Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

Ok, this one is new to me: I lost the preview thumbnails for video files, but libarts1-xine-trinity is installed. When I open a folder with a videofile (mp4/mkv) I get this line in .xsession-errors : sh: 2: Syntax error: Unterminated quoted string and the gear "T" just keeps spinneng forever. Any idea how I can get the thumbnails back? Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

A look at the narrow version of the webpage
by E. Liddell 25 Feb '21

25 Feb '21

For your amusement (and to test whether I can actually *post* to the new mailing lists, since I got the confirm and welcome mails, but other messages have only been coming from the old list), I offer the following glimpses of what the tweaked website will look like on smaller devices: Really narrow screens (such as phones) will see this: https://i.postimg.cc/m2tsMdWb/tdepage-phone.png Note the vertical menu at the bottom, and the header has been resized so that the word "Development" doesn't overflow off the screen to the right. Screens between 520px and 800px wide (of which I don't expect to find many—some tablets held in portrait mode, maybe) will get this instead: https://i.postimg.cc/y6fKkM5Q/tdepage-medium.png Menu horizontal at the bottom, header larger but still not full-sized. At 800px, it reverts to the format we all know and . . . love? In any case, at 800px, the sidebar takes up a little more than 20% of the screen, which should be acceptable to most. The resizing trick doesn't work in Konqueror, unfortunately, since it doesn't support CSS @media queries at the necessary level, but I am going to be very surprised if anyone manages to get Konqueror onto a phone. The page does resize itself correctly on the three modern browsers I've tested. E. Liddell

kmail & spamassasin bugging me.
by Gene Heskett 24 Feb '21

24 Feb '21

kmail has nasty bug that is getting the best of me, specifically, if SA decides it is spam, I am blocked from replying to that message because only the SA report is quoted in the reply. Unless I copy/paste the message into the reply. That of course, if I do it rigt, needs another 5 minutes of editing to re-establish something that looks like proper quoting. You simply cannot get a message from amazon customer service that is rated at less than 10 by spamassassin. To top the insult, if you scroll thru the message format window at the bottom of the kmail screen, and select the html and 2 clicks later get the html displayed and it contains a reply button, it has been emasculated and does nothing regardless of how many times you click on it. Then, once you have the message on screen, its too tiny to read w/o a microscope, and so is the printout you would like to save for your records when the item being discussed is a better 3d printer with a shipped price just north of $1800 USD. The usual ctrl+ doesn't resize it either. All of this needs fixed. Thank you. Stay safe and well everybody. What's gone is the entry in the context menue that opened konqeror in the actual mountpount of a device. So I'm back to my quest of "media://":) Since this email, two things have now been added to R14.1.0-dev. 1) "Open Medium System Folder" command has been added to camera devices too. This was done few days ago and I mistakenly emails only Nik instead of the whole ML. 2) "Open Medium System Folder" is now available for both mounted and unmounted medium. If the medium is unmounted, it will be mounted and then the system folder open. The action is also available in the notification dialog that pops up when you insert a medium (usb stick, camera, cdrom/dvd, ...) and can be set to "auto action" for automatic execution each time a medium with the same mime type is inserted. Both options are only available in R14.1.0-dev and not in R14.0.x . Cheers Michele

How to achieve the legal status of the project?
by Slávek Banko 23 Feb '21

23 Feb '21

Hi all, in previous emails, I sent information about the status of the project, we discussed the migration of services and also about CLA vs. DCO. Now it is time to open another big topic: how to achieve a legal status of the project? Here are some questions and several possible solutions. Again, I apologize in advance for the long mail, but it's an important topic, so it deserves thorough information. 1. Fiscal host. This seems to be the simplest option, which can give us the way to manage our own funds - that is, to receive donations and pay expenses, while the fiscal host will keep accounts and provide legal status for the necessary legislation. We have previously discussed this possibility here. And we discussed in this context about OpenCollective, which can provide such a fiscal host. It is very good that OpenCollective performs financial management very transparently. I believe that this transparency can be motivating for contributors. It is also good that it is possible to choose between a fiscal host in the US and the EU. Of course, they deduct some percentage of the income we will earn, but in my opinion - "90% of something" is better than "100% of nothing". pros + simple + very transparent + choice between EU or US cons + only for funds management Note: I've also researched other platforms for maintaining donations, but OpenCollective seems to me best suited for software teams like ours. 2. A company that focuses on providing legal status for open source projects. There are companies that focus on providing legal status and services for open source projects. Such companies can provide not only a fiscal host, but also litigation assistance. They can also act as holders of things - trademarks, domain names, servers, etc. In addition to big names like the Linux Foundation, there are those where we are more likely to have a chance to get their interest - Software Freedom Conservancy, or Dyne.org. The SF Conservancy - https://sfconservancy.org/ - seems to be very well established. This should guarantee their reliability. Under their roof are many famous projects - GIT, QEMU, OpenWRT, Samba, Wine, Inkscape,... see https://sfconservancy.org/projects/current/ Although there is not as great transparency in fund management as on OpenCollective, SF Conservancy looks very good. You can find the necessary information on the website - about the services provided, the conditions, and how to apply for membership. Of course, they also deduct some percentage of the income we will earn, but it is clear that it brings useful value. pros + provides more than just a fiscal host + looks proven and trustworthy cons + less transparency of funds than OpenCollective + no choice of location - only US Dyne.org - https://dyne.org/ - is another company providing such services. It provides legal status for Devuan, for example. However, here I have a few reservations for which it would be necessary to find out the answer first. Their website is, in short, "modern", meaning it is almost impossible to find any useful information. It is not clear what team is behind this company and how trustworthy it is. Furthermore, I don't feel good about how they present covered software as theirs - as if they were developing it. Sure, they may be trademark owners, but the SF Conservancy approach, where projects mention them as members, makes a much better impression on me. If we'd like to think about Dyne.org, it's necessary to find out a lot of information here that I haven't been able to find out by researching the web. pros + provides more than just a fiscal host cons + uncertainty about credibility + less transparency in all respects + no choice of location - only EU 3. Our own non-profit organization. The option of founding our own organization may seem the most attractive, but at the same time it represents the greatest overhead burden for us. Because the current active team members want to focus on code maintenance and development, we would have to hire someone trusted to deal with the legislation of such an organization. We would probably also have to hire some lawyers to deal with the legislation to create the company. Because we do not have our own funds and there is no certainty what income we will be able to earn, there is no certainty how we will be able to pay such people. I see too many pitfalls here for this way. pros + we would have our own independent organization cons + too much overhead for the team leader + the need to find your own solution for the transparency of the funds + the risk of neglecting legislative duties + the need to hire our own accountant I ask for your opinions and comments on the above options. So far, I have not made any specific request from any of the listed entities - I have only done a research of available information. Thank you. -- Slávek

tderandrtray question
by Thierry de Coulon 23 Feb '21

23 Feb '21

Hello all, I don't know if there might be a bug here. I am running TDE on a desktop. Every time I update/upgrade TDE, I get error messsages from tderandrtray which, from what I can guess from my notebook, is a system tray applet for screen rotation and resizing. This message does not appear at once, so obviously tderandrtray does some sort of check at times and runs into a problem (backtrace output is provided). I only saw this on my main machine, not on the video/games machine that shares the same kvm switch, so I'd guess it has to to with the video card (AMD Raven on the computer with the problem, Radeon RX on the other) and/or the motherboard (both Gigabyte with AMD CPU, but not the same). My solution has been to rename /opt/trinity/bin/tderandrtray to tderandrtray_old, however I have to do this every time and probably not everyuser will know where to look and what to do. Thierry

Kmail Questions
by Edward 22 Feb '21

22 Feb '21

I have a few questions re Kmail included with TDE, but the Kmail web site doesn't seem to address. * 1. Does Kmail allow multiple accounts? * 2. Does Kmail have an option to view full (or raw) e-mail headers? (I use full headers in Thunderbird to detect spam.) * 3. When Kmail creates an account for the first time (when I tried it in Fedora under native KDE), it also wants to create a 'wallet' to store passwords. Is there a way to make that 'wallet' optional? Thunderbird doesn't use one (as far as I know). Thanks in advance. -- Linux. A Continual Learning Experience.

HI people, have an odd one. I fixed Einstein's computer, all good. I don't want to recreate all the users so I just recycled. One is perfectly fine, but his has one funny thing. Yakuake (trintiy) show "sh #" rather than "localhost" It's using and saving konsole's profile (konsole is behaving normally). Tried computer uninstall and reinstall. I don't want to trash the user and start over again. Is there anything I should look at? I've checked all the usual but any suggestion from any starting point is welcomed.
