PCLinuxOS non-official TDE remaster
by Baron 09 Oct '14

09 Oct '14

Hi Alexandre, Maybe not a problem ! I have downloaded your latest "PCLinuxOS non-official TDE remaster version 2014, October 2" without any issue. Checked MD5 and its a good download. I'm in the process of installing it on my test machine right now. However when I came to burn the iso using your previous version I have discovered that I can no longer burn DVD-R's ! A DVD+R burnt without any problem but K3B imediately ejected the -R disc. I didn't used to have this problem. The drive burns -R's Ok using "Open SuSE". When I can get chance I will test for this problem using the latest version of your PCLinuxOS release. -- Best Regards: Baron

Konqueror - are these bugs?
by iadest＠o2.pl 06 Oct '14

06 Oct '14

Hello I've found 3 things in Konqueror, they may be bugs or maybe they are just Konqueror's specific ways of interaction and I am using MS Explorer too much :). So I don't know should I file bugs for them: Issue 1: Which files are selected? I am using Detailed List View in Konqueror. When I use mouse to select few files dragging a rectangle, sometimes one or more files below the rectangle are selected too. Issue 2: Inconsistent file renaming methods Renaming "in place" in Konqueror is a very useful function if small keyboard is used. It is easier to click on the name again, type new name and hit Return (or Esc if I made a mistake). But clicking on the name doesn't always work. This behaviour is inconsistent in different view modes - it works in icon view modes, it doesn't work in list view modes. Issue 3: New folder and then... When I create a new folder, enter its name and hit Return two times, I think I should enter this new folder, not the first folder in the list. But maybe it's Konqueror's default way?. Marek

kmail does not quote the same depending on reply type
by Thierry de Coulon 05 Oct '14

05 Oct '14

Hello list... I think this is a "bug", however I don't know how to file: I use kmail 1.9.10 on TDE 3.5.13.2 (running on openSuSE 13.1). When I click "Reply" or "Reply to author" I mostly get no texte quoted (although it *does* work sometime, I did not yet find out when and why). *but* if I click "Reply to all" or "Rely to mailing list" the message gets quoted... If I remember well I did not have the problem with wheezy, so it may be only the SuSE RPM version. Thierry

TDE can be run on another architecture - powerpc
by Slávek Banko 05 Oct '14

05 Oct '14

Hi all, on IRC recently, one user asked about the possibility of using TDE on PowerPC architecture. I took the challenge and tried to add powerpc architecture on my small builder. After solving the fundamental problem with CMake I have successfully progressed in building more and more packages. Currently in my alternative apt source 'preliminary-stable-builds' are available almost all packages for Debian 7.x (Wheezy) on PowerPC. Who of you has a real PowerPC hardware, you can test it! -- Slávek

PCLinuxOS doesn't use systemd
by Alexandre 01 Oct '14

01 Oct '14

Hi, I saw in the last few weeks discussion about newer distros switching to systemd, and some persons here says they would use another distro to avoid systemd at all. PCLinuxOS doesn't use systemd and have recent kernel, now at 3.16.xx, and it still has HAL, so it might be a good alternative for users who prefer classic startup sysvinit systems. Texstar, the one at the head of PCLinuxOS also said that he will stay away of systemd for as long as he is not forced to use it. By the way, I will release in the next few days the new version of my PCLinuxOS non-official TDE remaster. It will still be based on super stable TDE 3.5.13.2, with the PCLinuxOS better than average user friendliness and hardware support, plus updated graphic style and less fat. Stay tuned! :) Thank you! -Alexandre

Minimal install of TDE
by Michael . 20 Sep '14

20 Sep '14

I'm about to start on making a live version of a minimal install of TDE for Cobber (Australasian Debian). I am wondering what are the absolute minimum packages required for a working TDE without applications. The intent behind the minimal install is to allow end users who want to choose the applications in their install to install only what they need and want. I will provide synaptic (or a TDE equivalent) for those who want a gui for package selection but there will be no office suite, games, graphics tools, music or video tools. In other words all I want is the visible desktop, menu etc so that the user can navigate enough to install more applications through their internet connection using either synaptic or a terminal. Cheers. Michael.

systemd and sysvinit, a question
by Lisi Reisz 19 Sep '14

19 Sep '14

Since this list seems prepared to stick to logic, facts and solutions, rather than heat and emotion, perhaps some kind soul would answer a question for me. I have no opinion on init systems. I accept what I am given and am grateful, but .... If sysvinit is as staggerigly marvellous as it is being painted by some, and if it was such a near thing that it got dropped as the Debian default init system, how come the vote was apparently between Upstart and systemd? And given that it was a vote between Upstart and systemd, why are some people so up in arms and ranting that sysvinit was dropped by a meaningless margin? (The chairman's casting vote.) When and how was the decison to drop sysvinit as the Debian default init system actually taken? Lisi

Wheezy upgrade to R14
by Greg Madden 15 Sep '14

15 Sep '14

Went for it, upgrades main workstation,,whew... a couple of issues. Wheezy amd64, TDE 3.5.13.2 > http://mirror.xcer.cz/trinity-sb/dists/wheezy/deps-r14 I used 'apt-get dist-upgrade', went without a hitch. Issue: when I log in, a dialog box pops up for a locked session, need password. I get from 3-6 of these dialogs on each login, I usually do not shut my box down..minor anoyance , definately not locked sessions, or screensavers... would like to know how to get rid of these. I use the 'adept-notifier' icon in the system tray. The icon no longer, it used to, changes to green after a update. A restart of the session will remedy this, do not want shut everything down to fix issues with desktops. Love kdepim..it is the app that keeps me hooked on Trinity, not feeling the love for kpdf & gwenview. -- Peace, Greg

For the records: Deepin Linux + TDE
by Thierry de Coulon 05 Sep '14

05 Sep '14

Hello all, A magazine I was reading talked about Deepin Linux ( a chinese Ubuntu derivative with an HTML 5 desktop environment). As the last Deepin is based on Trusty, I've installed it and then used Slavek's repositories to install R.14 on it: it works perfectly. Their native DE get's removed in the porcess and Deepin's own applications are not really great IMHO, so all thsi may be without real use, but TDE on Deepin works. I have to understand how to tweak Ubuntu to revert from using sudo to using root if I want to continue using this istall though... Thierry

Jessie + R14
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 04 Sep '14

04 Sep '14

Hi! I just finished testing jessie + R14 fom Slávek repo. Things look really good, including the new color scheme :-) There are only 2 things I found: - some minor translation issues (some text elements are not translated). - Configuration of "LID close" is ignored: the screen is always locked ( i.e. the user has to enter his password) after opening the lid. Looks like the settings to do nothing on "LIC close" are somehow ignored. Good work! Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA.

Trinity on a Mint base?
by Robert Peters 29 Aug '14

29 Aug '14

Something somewhat similar to the Kubuntu 14.04 problem - a few months ago I did a fresh install of Mint (Debian Mate) in order to have its wifi functionality. Then installed TDE base and several useful packages, which work. Later I installed TDM and other packages it seemed to need and chose TDM as the login mechanism. During login using TDM, the list of available sessions doesn't include TDE, and the subsequent desktop is still Mint. So maybe I missed some packages or configuration? Robert

A little KDE Plasma 5 tour, just for curiosity
by Alexandre 26 Aug '14

26 Aug '14

Hi, Just to try it, I tested Plasma 5 on my computer. At this stage, it is still called Plasma 5, instead of KDE 5 because the software around the desktop is not all ready for Qt5. Also, I provided some screenshots showing Trinity apps being run on Plasma 5. They have to be launched manually from Konsole, but they run run very well and they are even well integrated, when QTCurve widget style is used. IMHO, Plasma 5 is much more agreeable and pleasant to use than it was in KDE4. Yes, it is much slower than Trinity, but it features less nonsense than KDE4. It has not crashed on me for the ''small'' time I tried it. The new K menu is a kind of hybrid between what is the Kicker and the Kickoff menu in Trinity. From what I can see, it will make forget the KDE4 series pretty soon, when it will be ready, but Trinity performance and useability is still unbeatable :) Please be reminded that I only posted these screenshot for curiosity and nobody has to look at it. If you want to comment, please be open-minded. -Alexandre

emacs and trinity on ubuntu 14.04
by Leonard T Harris 26 Aug '14

26 Aug '14

A fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04. I installed the trinity nightlies. The first thing I notice is trying to start emacs, I get the error. Undefined color: "FOREGROUND" emacs -q also gives the same error. emacs -nw works as expected. Judging from this: http://emacs.1067599.n5.nabble.com/bug-16462-emacs-does-not-start-under-KDE… I believe it's is some weird X problem. Since emacs worked fine when I edited /etc/apt/sources.lists to add the nightly repo, I'm guessing it is somehow related to installing TDE. There is an Emacs.ad file in: /opt/trinity/share/apps/tdedisplay/app-defaults/Emacs.ad xrdb -query | grep -i emacs Emacs*Background: WINDOW_BACKGROUND Emacs*Dialog*background: BACKGROUND Emacs*Dialog*foreground: FOREGROUND Emacs*Foreground: WINDOW_FOREGROUND Emacs*XlwScrollBar.Background: BACKGROUND Emacs*XlwScrollBar.Foreground: FOREGROUND Emacs*backgroundToolBarColor: BACKGROUND Emacs*bottomToolBarShadowColor: BACKGROUND Emacs*menubar*background: BACKGROUND Emacs*menubar*foreground: FOREGROUND Emacs*popup*Background: BACKGROUND Emacs*popup*Foreground: FOREGROUND Emacs*toolBarShadowThickness: 0 Emacs*topToolBarShadowColor: BACKGROUND Emacs.default.attributeBackground: WINDOW_BACKGROUND Emacs.default.attributeForeground: WINDOW_FOREGROUND Any idea how to make emacs work again? have blown up kicker
by dep 25 Aug '14

25 Aug '14

greetings, good folks . . . i'm running 3.5.13.2 on 12.04LTS on a 64-bit machine. untril friday i had two monitors, secondary above primary. primary was 1920x1080; secondary, though physically smaller, was 1920x1200. acquired a replacement secondary monitor, fundamentically identical (1920x1080) to the primary. whereupon xrandr reported 1936x 2152. primary monitor is sharp, secondary has contrasting ghosts slightly to the right of the original image. thinking that my driver was flaked out, i d/led the latest geforce driver and installed it. i rebooted. xrandr briefly listed 1920x2152 (1920x2160 would be correct) before kicker crashed. i have tried running dcop kicker kicher restart; sometimes it shows kicker restarting, but then it disappears not to return. there was a time when editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or before that, XF86config) would let one adjust things to get the video right, and that opening kcontrol and making, then unmaking, a change yo the kicker parameters would fix things. but the x configuration file structure has gone all odd, and i'm not sure i'd know anymore what to tell it anyway. i can go looking for a way to fix the screen configuration, i suppose, but i cannot live without my kicker. ideas? thanks. -- dep The shortest distance between you and playing great acoustic guitar: the great new instructional DVDs from Marjorie Thompson, available at www.MarjorieThompson.com

The following packages have unmet dependencies: kdesktop-trinity : Depends: binutils (< 2.23) but 2.24.51.20140727-1 is to be installed. I am so, so sorry - Kubuntu 14.04
by Peter Laws 19 Aug '14

19 Aug '14

Got a new workstation. Wrong video card. The vendor -- rhymes with Bell -- was happy to send me a 2-port card and 3 displays when I ordered a card that had 3 ports (because, hello, three displays). No problem, purchasing person, just have them send me the new card and I'll send the old one back. Nope, no can do, user guy. Send the whole system back. Three weeks later ... I decide I want the latest Kubuntu. I see that there is no TDE for 14.04 so I think "OK, surely they've made KDE 4 usable by now given that it's been how many years?" Um, no. Panels won't extend across multiple screens - have to have one for each. Do those stay on the screens where you put them? No they don't. Surely this is something new. No, it is not - googling around tells me that it's at least 5 years old *and* the plasma idiots say that this won't be fixed because it isn't a problem. Even *Konsole* is farked up. What a mess. So here I am ... begging for 14.04 support in TDE because I really don't have the time to spend reinstalling *again* (I skipped over the Fedora 20 and CentOS 6 chapters of the story). This is a work system, where I do work, not a play system where I play. That is a distinction lost on the plasma/KDE 4 idiots. There's one more thing with today's desktop environments. I'm working mostly with files. The workflow is to make file in one program, process in another, correct in third one, manage files in Konqueror, use files in one more program, batch- process in terminal, etc. In Trinity the most frequently used tasks can be configured to toolbar buttons or some actions (e.g. click-to-rename which is unfortunately not consistent in different views like in MSWin). KDE4 or Gnome 3 or many other desktops are focused on working not with files, but with programs. This is a small change in ergonomy, but has significant consequences. Most customization does not exist in this model and most tasks are executed in single program, so changing active programs (famous Alt-tab) occurs rarely. It is good if someone uses only web browser and mail client, but fails when files are processed. With every new version of operating systems and tablet computing gaining popularity, this model slowly goes back to single-tasking model. It looks similar to these web browsers which dropped favourites/bookmarks for 3x3 dial scrren to bind users to few commercial internet content providers (saying "website" for these sites is not much appropriate today). "possible spam" not getting quoted
by Thierry de Coulon 11 Aug '14

11 Aug '14

Hello list, I'm back with another puzzle. This time about kmail (the version in 3.5.13.2). I recently changed my ISP and the new one has an option to filter the mails with spamassassin. I am starting to receive more mails that spamassassin forwards with this header: *************************** X-Ham-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "<my isp>", has identified this incoming email as possible spam. The original message has been attached to this so you can view it (if it isn't spam) or label similar future email. If you have any questions, see root\@localhost for details. *************************** These mails are *not* spam but probably some sort of html/mixed html messages. The good point is that the mail is turned into plain text, the problem is that such mails don't quote the message when replying...... As far as I can say this only happens with such fowareded mails. I'm considering turning off that spam filter (I have spamassassin running localy and I use an external service), but maybe somone understanding kmails internals better than me can give an advice? Regards, Thierry

LibreOffice with TDE integration on Debian and Ubuntu
by Slávek Banko 11 Aug '14

11 Aug '14

Hi everyone, thanks to Tim's hard work on the integration of TDE with LibreOffice I have on my small builder setup another apt source: libreoffice-tde-sb. Source contains only packages for Debian Wheezy and Ubuntu Trusty. Both for amd64 and i386. Contrary to official packages on the build-farm, there are two differences: 1) For Debian Wheezy was used as the source LibreOffice 4.2.5 from wheezy-backports. Konqueror copy progress info
by Thierry de Coulon 10 Aug '14

10 Aug '14

Hello all, I've switched to openSUSE (13.1) because I had some trouble with Wheezy missing some needed "recent" libraries (plus LibreOffice on Debian does not give me previews of the pictures I want to import, somehow it does on SuSE). Everything is fine with 3.5.13.2 but have one (unimportant) bother that puzzles me: On Wheezy, when I copy files with Konqueror, I get a nice progress bar. On SuSE, I get a "text box" that sequencially lists the files being copied but there is no information about progress - neither graphic nor text. As I said I can live with that, but I wondered if that might be a bug in the openSUSE build, or more probably I'm missing something? Have a nice day, Thierry

HAL removal - needed for ksmserver?
by aw30＠sayne.org 05 Aug '14

05 Aug '14

I get a lot of boot messages of the form: udevd[1465]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event' 'socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event': No such file or directory The standard fix from https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2014/01/msg00857.html is Remove the hal package and you should be fine. HOWEVER: apt-get remove hal gives: The following packages will be REMOVED: hal hal-trinity kdebase-runtime-data-common-trinity kdebase-trinity ksmserver-trinity And I think ksmserver-trinity is required ( I use xinit /opt/trinity/bin/startkde to start Trinity ) So does Trinity actually use HAL, or can I just get rid of it? cheers ant -- Sent from my linux system running Debian 7, desktop trinity-KDE. TDE v14.0.0 development status update
by Michele Calgaro 29 Jul '14

29 Jul '14

Hi everybody, just thought about giving an update of where we are with the development of v14.0.0. Back in March we made a list of bugs to fix before the next release. Such list was made up of a total of 115 bugs (31 of which "conditional" ones). The list has grown a little bit to a total of 123 bugs and so far we have solved 78 of them (approx 63%), plus some more (approx 10) that we didn't add to the list even if they should have been. It's taking longer than expected, but we all have just spare time for TDE and we are trying our best. Even if slowly, we are step-by-step edging towards finalizing v14.0.0. How long more will it take? Can't give a precise answer, but based on the experience so far I would say between 3 to 5 months to get to the bottom of that list and be ready for the first release candidate. As usual, you can keep up with the current development status either: - on bugszilla bug 2014 (http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=2014) - or on the TDE etherpad (http://trinity.etherpad.trinitydesktop.org/39) Cheers Michele

dependency to deprecated hal package
by Stefan Endrullis 09 Jun '14

09 Jun '14

Hello, I recently upgraded to Ubuntu trusty and discovered some problems with hal. I read that hal is deprecated and that I have to purge the package in order to get rid of the problems. Unfortunately kdebase-kio-plugins-trinity depends on hal, because of some hotplug/automount features I could easily give up on the hotplug/automount feature. But kdebase-kio-plugins-trinity contains also the protocol support for ftp, http, ... - essential parts of trinity. What's the future of this package? Is it possible to convert the "strong dependency" to hal into a "package suggestion" and to eventually implement some fallback strategies if hal is not available (just deactivating all hal features)? TDM/kdm is running and lets me log in, but then I only get an xterm entitled "Failsafe"
by Jagged O'Neill 01 Jun '14

01 Jun '14

High again, that was a short trip into paradise... After playing around a bit in TDE, and additionally installing some other handy software (xmms, geeqie, povray, and some others), I just wanted to start copying some files from the old to the new box. But I had chosen a default disk partitioning at install-time, and my /home was only 25GB, which I then wanted to resize. Not knowing what it is all about (first-timer), I followed the recommen- dation to do the resizing when the FS is not mounted, so I logged out, set off `umount /home`, which failed, because some trinity processes did not exit and held files open. Such things happens even with the best software around, so I didn't find it suspicious enough to jot down the files and processes (and I'm still not sure whether they are (one of) the reason(s) for what has happened then. I resized the volume for the /home FS, which was done in a second, rebooted, logged on in TDM as before, but was presented only with one single xterm. No window manager, no kicker, nothing from the previous session... nothing at all... Meanwhile I found my way to the freenode#trinity-desktop channel, where SlavekB tried to help me out with this already. No error output in .xsession-errors; I ran /opt/trinity/bin/kdm manually, redirecting it's stdout and stderr to some files... no output... sure, it writes to a "custom file", namely /var/log/kdm.log, which was already beyond 100MB when I checked. This is, however, full of some lines that say (II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch which happens far too often, but either before or after the TDE session doesn't come up. I just moved all the old log out of my way, to see what it is actually printing when things go wrong. The startup merely copied the X servers log, and it was 68 lines long when the SAK screen appeared, (fortunately) only one of which was such an (II) line as mentioned. After logging in, the log file grew by only two lines, the following ones: QWidget::setMinimumSize: The smallest allowed size is (0,0) QWidget::setMaximumSize: (unnamed/QDialog) Negative sizes (-1,-1) are not possible what's that? I can't imagine that these lines are a description of the reason for the malfunction. Even before I asked for help on freenode, I tried some possibly curative actions on my own. I moved ~/.trinity to ~/.trinity.old, in the hope there was just something wrong with my config... I also moved other files out of the way of a new session, of which I thought they might have to do with the desktop environment, as there are: ~/.dbus ~/.kderc ~/.qt ~/.xcompmgrrc In the older kdm.log I also found the following message: kdm_config [935] info: Cannot open master configuration file /opt/trinity/share/config/kdm/kdmdistrc That file does indeed not exist, and after I looked into that dir, and read the README file, I used /opt/trinity/bin/genkdmconf --no-old to create a new config, but it was actually the same as the old one, except it had SAK enabled, which SlavekB suggested to deactivate, to see if that may be the reason... there were/are no other trinity processes running before the login and after the failure to ignite the session, just kdm is happily running with nothing to do, and some SAK processes if enabled... Any further suggestions? Thanks in advance, best regards, Jagged -- valgrind python -c 'for i in range(1,1): print(i)' 2>&1 | grep error

OS13.1: nothing provides trinity-tdenetwork-*, jasper, maybe others?
by Jagged O'Neill 01 Jun '14

01 Jun '14

High everyone, I tried to install TDE on OS 13.1 earlier this year, on a VM somewhere on the net, and though I found helping minds here, I abandoned the idea, due to the fact that it won't be very useful anyway over a sluggish connection as mine. Now I got a new box, on which I want to install Trinity, because it's the only DE that I find really useful. I guess the computer is powerful enough to even run KDE 4, but I want my kicker... So much to the asides, now to the point: When I tried to install TDE on that VM, I've had problems obviously because there were already KDE 4 components installed; I remembered that and avoided any other KDE stuff by just installing the base system with minimal X. I followed the steps described on http://trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Documentation/OpenSUSEBinaryInstall… and it was fine until I reached the `zypper install trinity-desktop` command. I tried both the command line version and the YaST frontend, and both complained: ----------------- Problem: trinity-desktop-3.5.13.2-2.oss131.opt.noarch requires trinity-tdenetwork >= 3.5.13.2, but this requirement can not be provided uninstallable providers: trinity-tdenetwork-3.5.13.2-3.oss131.opt.x86_64[trinity] Solution 1: do not install trinity-desktop-3.5.13.2-2.oss131.opt.noarch Solution 2: break trinity-desktop-3.5.13.2-2.oss131.opt.noarch by ignoring some of its dependencies ----------------- Okay, but the objected package is there... what's wrong? I then tried to first install tdenetwork first (only command line), and it also complained, but in a way that I really did not expect: ----------------- Problem: nothing provides jasper needed by trinity-tdenetwork-3.5.13.2-3.oss131.opt.x86_64 Solution 1: do not install trinity-tdenetwork-3.5.13.2-3.oss131.opt.x86_64 Solution 2: break trinity-tdenetwork-3.5.13.2-3.oss131.opt.x86_64 by ignoring some of its dependencies ----------------- I'm a peaceful man, so I decided not to break anything, hence I'm back again on this mailing list to ask for your help. Hi List, Michele, I found on a google search a question asked by Michele about building from source using tde_packaging where libr-dev & gettext-kde wee unmet dependencies (http://trinity-devel.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::10775:get:1). I did not find an answer to the quetion though. As I'm currently facing the same problem, does anybody know the answer? Michele, did you get an answer? Cheers, Mike. --

Thinkpad X41 key 234 is interpreted suddenly as button-1 (mouse)
by Uwe Brauer 31 May '14

Hi I am running Kubuntu 10.04 with trinity 3.5.13, the keys which are sitting above the left and right arrow were recognized by xev as 234 and 233 and I mapped them via xmodmap. keycode 234 = F30 keycode 233 = F31 However out of a sudden, the right key 234, is now interpreted as a mouse button, button-1, even by xev. I restarted the Xserver rebooted the machine, no change. I am desperate. Anybody could help me please. thanks Uwe Brauer

upgrade testing
by Greg Madden 25 May '14

25 May '14

Thought I would start a thread to gather info on what method(s) work to upgrade from 3.5.13.2 > R14. I did this from konsole in an x session. System: Debian Squeeze LTS, AMD64. I changed my sources list to the nightlies. Ran "apt-get update". There is one package to be removed, many new packages to be installed and fewer to be upgraded. 'apt-get upgrade' will not install the new packages, they are held back. I used 'aptitude upgrade' and the resolver figured out all the depends, new installs, upgrades and removal. Almost perfect, better than any previous upgrades. A couple of things I noticed is my desktop wallpaper was set at the default, I like 'alien nights' :-) Ending my current session via the logout dialog drops me to a cli, I have to 'restart tdm-trinity'. I did test this on a vm (cloned) I have for legacy support purposes. Real hardware may be different. -- Peace, Greg

I'm working in Kile on a LaTeX file with *.mng extensions. Due to the strange file extension Kile does not recognize it as source LaTeX file and almost all editing capabilities provided by Kile are gone. For example it does not recognize document structure and the autocompletion of references and citations is gone. How can I make Kile aware that this is in fact a LaTeX file? Janek

Re: [trinity-users] Most simple way to upgrade Trinity
by Michele Calgaro 21 May '14

21 May '14

> for Debian based distros, I would normally recommend a clean install after a proper backup is done. That's actually a very good way: no risk loosing anything and at the same time preserve a clean environment. Of course it takes some additional time. Another safe way is to run aptitude, upgrade the list of packages (press U) and then try to do small upgrades step by step, checking each time that there are no conflicts. In case there are some, explore the suggested possible solutions and choose the one that represent the best fit for your needs. As for TDE 3.5.13.2 --> TDE 14.0.0 upgrade, a lot of packages have been renamed, in particular kdelibs4c2a has become tdelibs14. That means that the upgrade will have to be done as a single step. Expect several packages to be removed and do not forget to manually select the new renamed packages to be installed if needed (ex: kdebase is now called tdebase). Overall, I would suggest a backup and clean installed, as Michael already said. Cheers Michele

TDE on SID
by Thierry de Coulon 21 May '14

21 May '14

Hello all, This is NOT a complain, just a question. While I'm working with a perfectly working Wheezy + TDE, I've had the curiosity to install "Siduction", a rolling distribution based on SID. I've tried to install Trinity Desktop from the nightly builds (using jessie as target distribution). desktop-base-trinity installed correctly, but kde-trinity depends tde-trinity taht won't be installed. My question: does this mean that Trinity and SID are incompatible (which I would understand, given that it's impossible - and makes little sense -to provide compatible packages) or is it one of these situations where packages are just being (re)created for Jessie and I should try it later. ANd if so how can I know when such a situation occurs? Siduction is not interesting if I can't get a sensible desktop... Regards, Thierry

Connected but without TDE
by Robert Peters 11 May '14

11 May '14

Hello, By installing something like Ubuntu 14.04 I can easily have a wifi connection and even install some Trinity apps. This is by using the most recent repos (Raring, 13.04) as instructed in www.trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Documentation/UbuntuBinaryInstallation. However, when the core TDE packages are selected (using Synaptic), they appear as broken - missing several dependencies. OTOH, if I try to use Ubuntu 13.04, with which I hope the Raring repos are compatible, then I can't get a wifi connection - my machine (Lenovo Thinkpad T440s) is too recent, and I have already gone thru the hassle of installing firmware, drivers, etc. to no avail. It's the same problem with Exe Gnu/Linux or a live CD Image for Ubuntu with Trinity preinstalled. Any ideas? For now I can use Windows or a distro without TDE. Also I think of selling the Thinkpad and using a less demanding (and expensive) machine. Robert

PCLinuxOS non-official TDE remaster version 2014, April 30 is ready to download!
by Alexandre 06 May '14

06 May '14

Hi everyone! My PCLinuxOS TDE non-official remaster version 2014, April 30 is ready to download! I call it non-official because it doesn't come from the PCLOS team and since it contains software coming from outside of their repos, it is also not supported by them. It only has a special ''permission to exist'' from the PCLinuxOS dev team. It can be seen as a whole as the much-loved PCLOS 2007, but fully updated and upgraded. It is a complete system that can be used as a LiveDVD or it can be installed (from the LiveDVD). New on this release: -Fully updated PCLinuxOS 2014 base system -Based on stable TDE 3.5.13.2 -A theme switch Zenity script to let the user switch between the more modern theme I use and TDE Classic theme, to please more users. -A SuperKaramba theme pack -XBMC media center and wine are new apps included on the DVD On this LiveDVD: -Tons of TDE software and major apps like LibreOffice, Firefox and Gimp Login info (on the LiveDVD): Regular user:guest Password:guest Super user: root Password:root System requirement: A x86 computer with at least 384mb of RAM. It is a 32bit system, but it can be installed on a 64bit system too. Download link: PCLinuxOS_no_TDE_remaster_30avril2014.iso 1.99 GB https://mega.co.nz/#!bkgRCKpa!HMakiQTlomIlq9I3O-8Ib117XeAOP4qwKo91FDjfFrg Please note that you will need to install the MEGA Download Manager Firefox (or Iceweasel) plugin to download a file of that size. If you are unsure about itd, you can uninstall the plugin right after the download. by John Pisini 04 May '14

Hi Alexandre, I think the issues I may have had are from the screensavers. If I let the screen timeout on it's own and just blank things seem to work OK if I activate the Screensavers doesn't seem to matter which one I pick weird things happen. Can anyone else confirm this? I do usually use a screensaver I have two machines one I use at work for meetings and testing that runs 8 hours a day but usually only gets used a couple of hours unless I have a massive amount of meetings. The screensaver on this one is more for security so I can lock the screen. The other is used at home ( it is a larger unit don't like to carry it around ) usually that gets used an hour to three a night 5 days a week and shut off each day. On the weekends I usually leave this machine on all day so I can use it whenever I want without having to wait for it to boot, so I usually leave a screensaver on that one as well but not usually locked. Both machines are Intel CPU's with Intel graphics. I believe both are based on the Sandy bridge chip set. I will continue to test and see what I can find. Overall the new version is very nice.

3.5.12 vs 3.5.13 performance?
by Uwe Brauer 29 Apr '14

29 Apr '14

Hello I have installed on a Thinkpad X200 (4 Giga RAM) Kubuntu 10.04+ I think trinity 3.5.12 (sudo dpkg -l | grep kde3) gives things like "adept-manager-kde3 4:3.5.12-0ubuntu6+r1124765 package manager for KDE3" Now I have recently installed Lucid+trinity 3.5.13 on a much older Thinkpad with just 1.5 Giga RAM. I have the impression that the second installation is much faster, for example the Control panel which I have at the botton of my screen needs ages to disappear in the first installation but only miliseconds in the second. Can anybody confirm this (so is a upgrade recommended?) thanks Uwe Brauer

Possible new distribution and mirror for Trinity Desktop Environment.
by Michael . 29 Apr '14

29 Apr '14

Hi I'm Michael (k3lt01) and I am the lead (read only) person involved in CobberLinux (1) or Cobber for short. The intent behind Cobber is to create an Australasian Linux that is easy to use and suits the countries in Australasia. I have created my own repository (using reprepro) and it is hosted on sourceforge (2). To give Australasian users a wide variety of choices I am creating different flavours or Cobber using different Desktop Environments. My intent is to support, via translation and repository hosting if need be, Desktop Environments who support Cobber's Australasian users. By this I mean Desktop Environments that allow and encourage users to have their own language (or national language) as standard in the distribution. Now that I have briefly explained Cobber I have 2 questions for you. 1. How do I translate Trinity Desktop Environment into Australian (New Zealand, Papua New Guinean) English? I have a transifex account (user name k3lt01) and a script to do automatic translations. I have already translated MATE, XFCE, and Pidgin messenger and will translate Gnome and KDE when I get the time (they have a massive amount of pot files to work through). 2. Would you like, or even allow, me to host your packages in Cobber's sourceforge repository so that cobber users have a geographically close mirror to access? Gwenview memory usage
by Greg Madden 25 Apr '14

25 Apr '14

Wheezy amd 64, TDE 3.5.13.2. I use Gwenview to view .tiff files, these are Architectural D drawings scanned to .tiff. They range in size: 350K>1.1M. The feature I kike about Gwenview as a viewer is I can view a directory full of tiff files and browse thru them using the toolbar. The downside, it seems, is that after viewing about 10 or so files all 8gb of memory is used, all other apps have been swapped out so checking mail or any other task is slow ..actually the workstation becomes to slow to be productive. Memory is not released between file views..is this normal? This is first app I have noticed using all memory so quickly..seems unusual. Thanks -- Peace, Greg

kpdf print function issue

Can not figure out how to get the correct size image, seems like shrink to fit, or some such were options. Do not see any such in the kpdf print dialog. This means that Trinity package for PCLinuxOS aren't 100% compatible with the newer packages used on PCLinuxOS. As of now, you can use the system as is after the install, but without upgrading it. I'll work at making the new version of it available very soon. It will have newer kernel (better hardware support) and the TDE packages are built against the new libraries used in the present version of PCLinuxOS. Coming soon! There is currently no plans to make a 64 bit version of my remaster, since 64 bit machines has enough power to handle more than TDE, but there is always the possibility to change the Kernel to one that supports more RAM on 32 bit machines. -Alexandre

Problems with ark

Hello Trinity-Team, I use ark very offen and would like to open archive files with special editors for example php-files with geany. When I select the file and use the function "open with", select geany it will be open with geany. But when I check the checkbox to make the selected tool the default for this type of file ark didn't remember this settings and allway show the files with the internal viewer. Is there a trick to change this behavior - as it was in old kde 3.5? Many thanks for your suggestions Rolf

Printer Control not showing jobs in queues

Does anyone know why the Trinity KDE Control Module for printers doesn't show jobs in the print queues?
