Missing Modules
by Raevyn Vieria-Madison 26 Nov '11

26 Nov '11

I was curious if anyone has run into this odd situation... I have Ubuntu and Kubuntu, and when I install TDE some parts in the systemsettings panel wont work properly, but when I install TDE on its own, those parts work. So I know its an issue with the other desktops "stealing" control is all. But this is my oddity.. I decided to see what Debian is about right. I installed it, and then I installed TDE. For some reason the systemsettings program didnt download. No biggie I found it in the repositories and installed it. But then I found that several options that should be in there are not. For simplicities sake I will name them off as a list: 1. Disks and Filesystems 2. User management 3. WINE configurator 4. System services I was wondering if there is a way to like, bring those modules in? I havent ever seen them just not be there before. Could it be an issue with Debian installing GNOME?

TDE trying to remove SUDO on Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal)
by Bimal Rekhadiya 26 Nov '11

Hello, I am trying to install TDE on my Ubuntu 11.04 system. I have added all four repositories and GPG key as described in http://www.trinitydesktop.org/installation.php#ubuntu Than I run the command "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-default-settings-trinity kubuntu-desktop-trinity" to install TDE. It downloads all files and when it start it tries to remove SUDO. Here are the command output: bimal@bimal-homelinux:~$ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-default-settings-trinity kubuntu-desktop-trinity Reading package lists... Bug in konqueror as file manager
by Philippe Bourdeu d'Aguerre 22 Nov '11

22 Nov '11

Hi, I use Trinity under Centos 5.7 at work and Ubuntu 11.10 at home. I noticed some problems with konqueror in file management profile: 1) Both on Ubuntu and Centos, when I click on System icon sidebar I get this message: Cannot find parent item $( kxdglauncher --getpath --xdgname DOCUMENTS ) in the tree. Internal error. 2) On Ubuntu only some menu items are missing: - menu "Go" is missing - menu "Window" is missing - "Open terminal" is missing in menu "Tools" I wonder if these are bugs or trouble in my configurations. By the way, is it possible to submit bugs in bugs tracker system ? -- Philippe BOURDEU d'AGUERRE AIME - Campus de l'INSA http://www.aime-toulouse.fr/ 135, av. de Rangueil Tel +33 561 559 885 31077 TOULOUSE Cedex 4 - FRANCE Fax +33 561 559 870

[trinity-users] trinity-keyring overwrites sources.list.d -why?
by David Hare 20 Nov '11

20 Nov '11

Web page instructions for Squeeze say to use: deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/debian squeeze main I put that (and the other 3 TDE lines) in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/trinity.list manually. When "trinity-keyring" gets installed it actually writes to (and overwrites if already exists) that file with this entry: # Trinity repositories deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu squeeze main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu squeeze main deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.1… squeeze main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.1… squeeze main It will work like that but not till after another apt-get update (that played havoc with my custom install scripts) I had to strip the deb package down to find out what had altered my list. ?

Customization of the Crystal SVG icons theme
by Laurent Dard 18 Nov '11

18 Nov '11

I see trinity developers are talking about how to ease users contributions. It inspired me to submit the following tip. It changes the settings for the whole system. Is there a way to add a custom icons folder in $HOME ? Comments are welcomed. (And feel free to correct my english.) ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chega De Saudade (No More Blues) how to change the default color of the folder icon in Crystal SVG icons theme ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I like the Crystal SVG icons shapes but I've been tired to see so much blue folders in konqueror. I needed colors! So I wrote down this tip for my personal use, and to share with others. [qt3] Qt3 licenses and configure
by Laurent Dard 17 Nov '11

17 Nov '11

I think that in Qt, the irritating question about licenses, that appears when executing 'configure', must be removed. So I suggest to change it. I saw that other things should be modified as well: README* INSTALL FAQ... And a lot of references to trolltech should be converted into references to Trinity: qt-bugs(a)trolltech.com --> http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/ etc. I need a clarification about licenses. According to /usr/share/doc/libqt3-mt/copyright (Trinity version): "Qt 3.3 is triple licensed under the QPL, GPL 2 and GPL 3." But Trinity web site says: "any Qt3 version released by this project is licensed under the GPL only" http://www.trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Documentation/Releases_3_5_13 Does it means there is a bug with 'THE Q PUBLIC LICENSE' which should be removed? And about modules, may the lines (225-227) MODULES="styles tools kernel widgets dialogs iconview workspace inputmethod" [ "$PLATFORM_QWS" = "yes" ] && [ "$Products" = "qt-professional" ] && MODULES="$MODULES network" [ "$Products" != "qt-professional" ] && MODULES="$MODULES network canvas table xml opengl sql" be replaced by MODULES="styles tools kernel widgets dialogs iconview workspace \ inputmethod network canvas table xml opengl sql" without breaking things? A third question: will Trinity Qt support Mac and QWS? I reported a bug: http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=628 with a patch for the 'configure' file, to be reviewed: http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/attachment.cgi?id=128 * Free edition GPL 2 & 3 only (no QPL) * Interactive part about licenses removed * Defined modules: "styles tools kernel widgets dialogs iconview workspace inputmethod network canvas table xml opengl sql" -- Laurent Dard

KMail search default
by Mike Bird 17 Nov '11

17 Nov '11

With 3.5.13 the default match in "Find Messages" has changed from "Complete Message" to "Subject". This requires an annoying extra couple of clicks to search Complete Message. People used to years of "Complete Message" are annoyed when their searches don't find the messages they were looking for, and we have to explain the change and remind them to change "Subject" to "Complete Message". There's no positive side to this change as one can already search on Subject much more readily in the Search field above the message list. Please consider reverting this change for R14. Also, if there's a way to fix this via a config file change I'd appreciate hearing about it. Thanks, --Mike Bird

keramik windows decoration
by Philippe Bourdeu d'Aguerre 16 Nov '11

There is a problem with keramik windows decoration, there is almost no window border. Changing border size didn't help. Kmail + GPG
by Kristopher John Gamrat 16 Nov '11

16 Nov '11

Hi, Kmail is giving me issues with setting up a GPG for signing. I'm hoping someone can help. I've never used a signing key for my email, but one of my friend's email keeps getting hacked, and I've been hacked a couple times, so it would help if he and I both could have a signing key. I tried generating a gpg key using both the "gpg --gen-key" command and using KGPG. KGPG recognizes both the key I used it to generate, and the key I generated with the gpg key (as in, both keys show up). KGPG shows both keys as being trusted ultimately. Kmail recognizes both keys, but the OK button is greyed out, and question marks are next to both keys. To add the keys, I went to the Kmail settings -> Identities -> Default identity -> Modify -> Cryptography -> OpenPGP Signing Key -> Change. Both keys are here but unselectable as described above. In Kmail settings -> Security -> Crypto Backends, both "OpenPGP (gpg)" and "S/MIME (gpgsm)" are selectable (not grayed out) and check marked. In ~/.gnugp/gpg.conf, I have the 'use-agent' option on it's own line (without quotes, of course). In ~/.gnugp/gpg-agent.conf, I put the following as suggested in my Google searches: --- pinentry-program /usr/bin/pinentry-x11 no-grab default-cache-ttl 1800 --- I have tried with gpg-agent running in daemon mode, and without it running at all. I have KGPG running in my system tray. When gpg-agent is running, I have KGPG set to use it, and I unset it when gpg-agent isn't running. For those who need a visual of my Kmail not accepting my GPG keys, I uploaded a screenshot to http://linuxjutsu.com/~kris/Pictures/kmail_gpg_prob.png . Both keys there are mine, generated on my machine under the user that I am logged in as. Since both are Ultimately Trusted, they should be accepted. Reread Keys in the Kmail dialog doesn't help, nor does right clicking the keys and selecting Recheck. The certificate manager button, and the Search For External Certificates button, both open Kleopatra. I don't want to use a certificate, I want to use one of the GPG keys that it's listing. Any suggestions much appreciated. -- Kristopher Gamrat Ark Linux webmaster http://www.arklinux.org/

The vanishing keyboard
by Thierry de Coulon 15 Nov '11

15 Nov '11

Hello. Now that I have solved the "unable to start kdeinit" problem, there are good and bad news. Good news is that I am editing my videos with kdenlive from the TDE environment and that's good. Not so good news is that I set up two keyboard layouts: one Swiss French (that's what I use), the other US English (for different situation where a US Keyboard is usefull. Now, after some time, I loose the swiss keyboard - no message, just I suddenly find out I'm QWERTY. I can solve this by changing the keyboard from kicker (set US, set fr_CH), but the swiss keyboard will disappear later again. I first thought I should remove the US keyboard, but that's a bad idea, because the swiss keyboard keeps vanishing and I have no more applet to click on in kicker... Anyone see this behaviour with his keyboard? Could this be a KDE 4 conflict? Thierry

OSS support ?
by Philippe Bourdeu d'Aguerre 15 Nov '11

15 Nov '11

Hello, A few words of presentation. I am new to Trinity. I manage a Centos 5 server with users connected trough Sunray devices. Centos 5 is stuck to KDE 3.5.4. There is a project (http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/ ) providing KDE 3.5.10 but it seems to be dead. It's why I am very excited about Trinity project. I am trying Trinity 3.5.13. and have an issue with sound. Arts offers only Alsa backend. In KDE 3.5.10, I have more choice. Sunray devices need OSS which is available in KDE 3.5.10 but not in Trinity 3.5.13. Is there a way to get OSS backend ? [debian] Trinity installation and Qt3 versioning bug
by Laurent Dard 14 Nov '11

14 Nov '11

To all Debian users who are experimenting problems to install Trinity. There was a bug with Qt3 versioning, in the Debian version of Trinity 3.5.13. (http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=583) If the following command: dpkg -l|grep 3:3.3.8-d-0ubuntu0 is listing some packages, you'll have to force a "downgrade" from version "3:3.3.8-d-0ubuntu0+sr73+pr181~squeeze" to version "3:3.3.8d-0ubuntu0+sr73+pr181~squeeze". Here is a script to do the job: OLDVERSION=3:3.3.8-d-0ubuntu0+sr73+pr181~squeeze NEWVERSION=3:3.3.8d-0ubuntu0+sr73+pr181~squeeze for f in `dpkg -l | grep $OLDVERSION | awk '{print $2}'` ; do apt-get install $f=$NEWVERSION done -- Laurent Dard

problem installing dev packages for 3.5.13

I would like to compile kde3 stuff for trinity, without compiling all of trinity first. so I tried to install kdelibs4-trinity-dev but this fails: Die folgenden NEUEN Pakete werden zusätzlich installiert: comerr-dev{a} hspell{a} kdelibs4-trinity-dev{b} krb5-multidev{a} ... ....... 0 Pakete aktualisiert, 93 zusätzlich installiert, 0 werden entfernt und 0 nicht aktualisiert. Muss 28,7 MB an Archiven herunterladen. Die folgenden Aktionen werden diese Abhängigkeiten auflösen: Beibehalten der folgenden Pakete in ihrer aktuellen Version: 1) kdelibs4-trinity-dev [Nicht installiert] 2) libarts1-trinity-dev [Nicht installiert] (which means something like 'keep kdelibs4-trinity-dev' although it is not installed !) reply Yes gives no result (nothing downloaded, nothing installed). in addition, there is a dependency for kdelibs4-trinity-dev mentioned: gettext-kde, which is not available. what am I missing ? werner p.s. my setup is debian squeeze, trinity updated from 3.5.12 to 3.5.13

TDE on Mepis Linux
by Thierry de Coulon 13 Nov '11

13 Nov '11

Hi all, I have been following TDE development, howeverI don't like Ubuntu's "way of life" and Debian Squeese lacked some drivers I need, so I've been using Squeese based Mepis 11 for the last moths (Warren finaly put together a usable KDE 4.x desktop). With the release of TDE 3.5.13 I decided to look if I could install it on Mepis. I followed the instructions for Squeese and actually everything went smoothly, except that update-initramfs failed, so I had to run it again with -t -u The problem I'm trying to solve is this: after reboot, I was able to choose TDE as environment for my session. However, I get a "Could not start kdeinit. check your installation" message. When I click "OK", TDE seems to load correctly, but kicker crashes on me very often, some settings can't be done (e.g. I cant change the clock, clicking on "configure clock" crashes kicker). I don't seem to find the TDE settings, which I would expect to be linked to this error too. Where should I look to try and understand *what* prevents kdeinit to start? I'm not sure if this culd be a KDE 4 / TDE conflict. This is not a production install, so I can try almost anything. thanks for any suggestions, Thierry

additional programs for 3.5.13
by Werner Joss 13 Nov '11

hello all, I just want to announce that I have now succeeded in building most of my favourite kde 3.5 applications which are not in the trinity repos, for trinity 3.5.13 on debian squeeze, see http://www.hoernerfranzracing.de/zip/trinity/index.html if anyone is interested, feel free to check them out. but keep in mind, that these are _not_ official trinity packages, nor guaranteed to work as expected, though I can confirm *worksforme* :) werner p.s.: I'll also ask on the devel list if there is interest for any of these to be incorporated in the official trinity applications tree (in which case I will first have to learn how to build proper debian packages...)

Squeeze/TDE 3.5.13 - failed upgrade
by Neil Youngman 13 Nov '11

13 Nov '11

Unwisely, perhaps, I attempted an upgrade from within a running desktop. I replaced my sources.list entries for TDE with: # Trinity desktop deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/debian squeeze main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/debian squeeze main deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.1… squeeze main deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.1… squeeze main aptitude update succeeded on the second attempt and then I ran aptitude upgrade. The first sign of trouble was that the window manager crashed as the update was applied. I was left with only the running windows and no borders. The only way to switch windows was to click in a different window, so I shut them all down with CTRL-Q and then I selected "end current session from a right-click menu. This dropped me straight back to a command line. All attempts to restart X and KDM failed, so I rebooted to see if that made any difference. I was still stuck at the command line, so I reverted my sources.list and tried to revert kdm. That failed with dependency issues, so I wiped all of trinity 3.5.13 and reinstalled 3.5.12, which restored my desktop to normal functioning. Neil Youngman

Why replace libgcc1, libstc++6, et al?
by Mike Bird 10 Nov '11

10 Nov '11

I am upgrading Debian Squeeze systems from TDE 3.5.12 to 3.5.13. The upgrades seem to work fine omitting the following packages: gcc-4.5-base 4.5.2-8ubuntu4 i386 libgcc1 1:4.5.2-8ubuntu4 i386 libgfortran3 4.5.2-8ubuntu4 i386 libgomp1 4.5.2-8ubuntu4 i386 libstdc++6 4.5.2-8ubuntu4 i386 I am loathe to install non-Debian versions of these packages in case they cause problems with other Debian software, either now or in future. Thanks for the info. It looks like there seems to be at least a moderate if not high demand for trinity-desktop. KDE4, Gnome 3 and Unity must have caused a lot of resentment. It is actually sad, considering all the voluntary work hours spent on those window managers, and the lost potential. My biggest personal disappointments actually are KDEPIM, akonadi, nepomuk trio, along with amarok. I am hoping to experience a back-to-home feeling with trinity desktop on these fronts. [trinity-users] Squeeze/TDE3.5.13 - Successful upgrade
by David Hare 07 Nov '11

07 Nov '11

2 more (Squeeze) systems to upgrade from 3.5.12 here today. Using official repo (not "nightly builds") I made sure to upgrade all Debian packages first (TDE sources temporarily disabled) and reboot. There was a recent Squeeze "point release". One machine has nvidia. Then (TDE sources re-enabled) used apt-get in download-only mode : apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade -d Once more: apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade -d That should have shown error messages for any failed downloads (there were not). If so I could have either waited or downloaded manually from "nightly builds" to /var/cache/apt/archives Then, to see if any other errors, like half the system to be removed or packages which apt will not install: apt-get dist-upgrade -s Finally, when satisfied it all looks good: (su) /etc/init.d/kdm-trinity stop (log in to shell as root) apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade (when prompted for config file overwrites, select "install the package maintainer's version") /etc/init.d/kdm-trinity start No problems at all.

Kicker crashes when I hover over "System" or "Settings"
by Corey McGuire 06 Nov '11

When I hover over "System" or "Settings" in the K Menu, kicker crashes. This bug is 100% repeatable and it happens after I've hovered over the name long enough to invoke the displaying of the child menu. I have a completely new install of Xubuntu 11.10, AMD64, and I am running the nightly build of 3.5.13. I blew away my profile, so this is a squeaky clean install. I'd file a proper bug report, but I don't know where I get the appropriate dump for this crash. Point me there, and I'll post it.

[trinity-users] Squeeze/TDE3.5.13 Live CD
by David Hare 06 Nov '11

06 Nov '11

I made a new Squeeze/TDE-lite Live CD with 3.5.13 and all current Squeeze updates: http://exe-linux.fastfishwebsolutions.com/tde/ In this version are only minimal changes to TDE defaults, just a nice (official TDE) wallpaper and a keyboard switcher on the panel . It is a "clean" build using debootstrap and some custom scripts (not remastersys or other utility) Everything is strictly GPL. Included are installers for HD and USB key, a snapshot/remaster utility, various other custom scripts, virtualbox-OSE guest support. Excellent results here from USB key. US/UK English and Spanish language support are preinstalled. Language and keyboard are selectable from the boot prompt. If there is any interest, one extra language (DE or FR ?) might just squash in to CD-size, for a future build. If anyone else wants to have a go at live image building, I have deb-packaged the necessary TDE-specific live-boot and live-config supplementary scripts. Please note: this is *NOT* an official TDE project and is supported by nobody except me. Unless you are feeling adventurous, please use the official TDE installation methods. It is not properly tested, beyond that it boots and the installer works here; some bugs will likely surface that are not the fault of TDE ! Regards David

I'm new to this mailing list thing, so forgive me if I am doing anything wrong. To the guy who is having trouble with his Trinity installation. From what I've gathered on IRC and a post on the announcements mailing list it seems that the mirrors haven't synced up. The issue seems to be related to Tim's connection troubles around the time of release. The server was also (I believe?) brought down to all the traffic gained from slashdot. I'm not entirely sure on this, since I'm just someone on the same boat as you. I did get around that specific problem by finding a different mirror though, and downloading the .repo file from mangafrance: http://trinity.mangafrance.com/f15/ but it's pointless because since the mirrors haven't synced fully (From what I've gathered, I'm not sure?) you'll get too many missing dependencies to install anything. It's hilarious since I Jumped to Fedora 15 the moment I saw trinity was available for it. Which is pretty funny! lol

Any pointer will be greatly appreciated. Hakan PS: A google search did not identify anybody with a similar problem.

TDE 3..5.13 failed upgrade
by Greg Madden 06 Nov '11

06 Nov '11

FYI, I have been using TDE 3.5.13 nightlies in Virtualbox, Debian Squeeze host, it was working great, I decided to upgrade my workstation, TDE 3.5.12 to 3.5.13, Debian Squeeze from the nightlies server. Failed miserably. the upgrade/install went without a hitch, but upon starting, KDM-Trinity would crash. Never got a login scren. Removing desktop-base-trinity made it possible to get a login screen. Logging in I get an error 'kdeinit failed to start' so no TDE apps worked. I run dual monitors and after the upgrade only one monitor would work. I have a custom xorg.conf file that has been working for several releases of Debian, it seems TDE 3.5.13 handlles X differently than 3.5.12. All in all the most trouble I have ever had on a Debian box. I purged 3.5.13 and re-installed 3.5.12. In my case, I got the wrong impression from the virtualbox install. Peace, Greg

[trinity-users] Graphical logout drops to shell (no kdm)
by David Hare 02 Nov '11

02 Nov '11

Firstly, congratulations Trinity team for the new release! Using newest 3.5.13, on Squeeze with all latest updates, installed on 3 machines here as well as virtualbox setups. On one machine's HD install (quite old SIS graphics) and on all using virtualbox OSE : After logout from graphical screen the shell appears, no kdm greeter. I must login as root and do </etc/init.d/kdm-trinity reload> to get a login screen. <ps ax> shows kdm still running. It doesn't happen with HD install on one machine with Intel and one with nvidia graphics. It did not happen with 3.5.12 anywhere. I have found a workaround by uncommenting the line "TerminateServer=true" in /etc/trinity/kdm/kdmrc Anyone else getting this? Bug? Regards, David

[trinity-users] 3.5.13 : Use of gksu or sux causes klauncher crash
by David Hare 02 Nov '11

02 Nov '11

3.5.13 is now working fine (so far) with kdesu. Thanks Trinity team for dealing with bugs 394/451. There is still an issue (here at least) with some apps, usually gtk, that use by default "gksu" (e.g. gparted) or "su-to-root -X -c command" (many of my custom scripts) Synaptic is ok, it already has a .desktop file for kde The problem is just like before, e.g. "klauncher could not be reached via dcop" requiring relogin or to call kdeinit in a terminal (if you can get one) This is however minor and easily fixable compared to 3.5.12, where sudo was mandatory by default (unacceptable for many Debian users) I note also, <sux> still causes similar errors (worked in kde 3.5.9/10 in Debian Lenny) Workaround, if affected: Change relevant .desktop files to include "X-KDE-SubstituteUID=true" OR using kmenuedit tick "run as different user" OR just call <kdesu rootappname> in terminal or run box. Don't use "sux". Check your custom apps/scripts. Regards, David

Hello. I've got a laptop I'm running OpenSuSe 11.3 with KDE4 on. In addition, I've installed the KDE3 version of KDEPIM on it. But not the KDE3 desktop. My problem is that if I have both Firefox and Kompozer (a website editor) installed, every time I click on a web link in an email, it starts up Kompozer INSTEAD of Firefox. I can't find any way to prioritize Firefox, except to uninstall Kompozer. Can anyone tell me where to look to make clicking on a url go to Firefox and not Kompozer. The KDEPIM is from 3.5.10. Trinity Release 3.5.13: Further Notes
by Calvin Morrison 30 Oct '11

30 Oct '11

Hello, Here are some further notes regarding the 3.5.13 release. The release is on schedule for Nov 1st (in 3 days). Now is your last chance to send in patches for the release. After Oct 29th a hard freeze will be in effect. No changes past this point will be made. This is to ensure that packagers have enough time to produce packages. After that the final tarballs will be built for the release. For the 3.5.13 release there will be no Ubuntu LiveCDs. If someone would like to respin a LiveCD for us, we will be happy to host the files. Oneiric packages are built and ready to install. Please report any problems you find. For Oneiric installation instructions: http://www.trinitydesktop.org/wiki/bin/view/Developers/NightlyBuilds Lastly, LibreOffice integration will not be available in Oneiric until the creation, submission, and incorporation of patches into the upstream LibreOffice project. Thank you, Calvin Morrison Trinity Desktop Team

Trinity: some problems...
by Jorge Gonçalves 30 Oct '11

30 Oct '11

Hello all! I'm new to Trinity. After some weeks trying, I finally manage to install Trinity night build to a Debian Squeeze - more exactly, a HD install of the latest Knoppix Cd. Well, Trinity is running, but there are some problems, the worst is that after using "File Manager - Super User Mode", I can no more open any other program, nothing, it only returns a DCOP error. I wonder if this is because of my install could somehow be broken, so I ask if anyone could confirm or not? Another problem - not related, Kopete does not run, it says: " kopete: symbol lookup error: /opt/trinity/lib/trinity/kopete_statistics.so: undefined symbol: sqlite3_open " And, finally, Basket has wrong dependencies: it should not depend on Kontact, but simply suggest it - see the developer page for that. All in all, from my limited testing, Trinity 3.5.13 seems solid, maybe a little more cpu usage than former Kde 3.5.10. I also manage to get Compiz working with Trinity, using the gtk-window-decorator. Cheers, Jorge

Restoring KMail files and directories.
by Lisi Reisz 30 Oct '11

30 Oct '11

I have problems with my hardware, and am probably going to accept some loss of data. But I am particularly anxious not to loose all my KMail information. In the dim and distant past, I used to be able to copy across a .mail folder and bingo! I had my emails. Is there anything similar in KDE 3.5.10? My guesses were all wrong! FWIW, and in case it affects anyone else, I tried to use my Lenny /home, which is on a separate HDD, with TDE 3.5.12 or 3.5.11 (I have wiped it, and now can't remember which it was). KMail refused to function. So I reinstalled Lenny and 3.5.10, and KMail could not use the directories because the indices had been altered. KMail's offered attempts to reset the indices (and maybe lose a bit) failed to work. Obviously I ought not to have tried to go backwards, but there was not much other choice at the time!! So, alternatively, is there some way I could tidy up the "corrupted" copy? Thanks Lisi

KDE 3 in Lenny has gone bonkers
by Lisi 27 Oct '11

27 Oct '11

Hello, all. This is a KDE problem, not a Trinity one, but I know of nowhere else that would give me a sympathetic hearing. ("KDE 3 is dead already. Scrap KDE 3 and go to KDE 4.") Bonkers is the best description I can come up with. Applications that were working fine are suddenly not. (In particular Konqueror, but not only Konqeror.) Settings change randomly. The latest, a few minutes ago, was my desktop settings, which have disappeared and the same random KDE one "set up" for all the desktops (4 - and until just now they all had different backgrounds). When I went to check what "configure desktop" showed, I found that my screensaver had been turned off. The most benign reason I can come up with is that the CMOS battery needs changing. Something is obviously on the way out. Motherboard also springs to mind. :-( It could, of course, be software related. I just can't think what! All other ideas and suggestions for solving this gratefully received. If the advice is bin the thing it will only echo my fears. I built this box about 8 years ago, so something crucial dying is not impossible. It would happen now. :-( I am in the middle of something that is important to me, and has a deadline of Monday, which I am not going to meet. I have had to give up driving because my eyesight has deteriorated, I live in the country and my husband (i.e. my transport) is away for the next 2 weeks. My, the gremlins are having fun. ;-( Lisi

printcap?
by Peter Laws 24 Oct '11

24 Oct '11

If only it were so easy. Maybe it is. I'm on nightly builds on top of Natty. Some rough edges, but definitely usable. One of the rough edges is that the printer wizard has no printer defs. So the question is, which file or files do I need to grab from my old Trinity/Lucid installation (which was done from CD, not nightlies)? Is that even doable? If it was 1991, I could probably just copy /etc/printcap ... :-) Peter -- Peter Laws / N5UWY National Weather Center / Network Operations Center University of Oklahoma Information Technology plaws(a)ou.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Feedback? downloading TDE...
by Patrick Serru 11 Oct '11

11 Oct '11

Hello everyone, By reading one of the last posts, I thought I could maybe try to compile TDE ... Until now, every time I looked at the documentation, I found far too complicated for a simple French technician. Beginning with CVS, which I find as friendly as a prison door. Finally: re-trying... user @ system :/.../ bin / TDE $ svn co svn: / / anonsvn.kde.org / home / kde / branches / trinity. / A... ... A kdeutils / kdelirc / profiles / Makefile.am svn: Compression of data failed svndiff "Compression of svndiff data failed!" What can I do with this mistake! The problem probably occurred on the server, the client must unpack only, I suppose ... I ask but no matter the answer. TDE is the system that I use as much as possible (I use the old to manipulate sounds with Audacity and sometimes to use LibreOffice). I am not using a virtual machine ... My dream is to compile TDE 3.5.12, on something like Arch Linux or Suse 10.3, that is: a distribution without SELinux. I also had the dream of helping the development of TDE, but you will understand from reading this post that will remain only a dream. There is no question in this post, but where should I indicate the existence of this "Compression of data svndiff failed" error? This is not a bug, is it? I talk about this error here because I noticed that the developers also read this list ... I love TDE an thank the developpers for the nice job they have done and still do. Good luck to everyone, Patrick

Trinity on newer Dell
by Peter Laws 30 Sep '11

30 Sep '11

Haven't been having luck with a new Dell Precision T5500n (2 x dualcore "E5503" and 12 GB RAM). The problem seems to be the ATI FirePro V7800 card. I can install Ubuntu Natty on it no problem. However, when I try to load the preconfigured Trinity/Maverick disc, I get the little "keyboard = human" screen and can escape to the menu, but when I try to "try Kubuntu without installing" I get the Kubuntu logo with the progress dots ... then nothing. In fact, nothing with the monitor icon indicating that the display lost the signal. Can I install the Trinity packages onto an Ubuntu Natty installation instead? At this point fixing it is a low priority, as the cause of the problem is buried deep within complex auto-signing code that is broken on this repository only. The official release repository works correctly as far as signing is concerned. > Thanks, Tim, for not forcing me (and the rest of us) to have to make a > new desktop layout just because KDE4 is "better" in some programmer's > mind. Detecting QT-Version of Trinity
by Rolf Schmidt 28 Sep '11

28 Sep '11

Hello Trinity team. First of all, I would like to thank you for your excellent work and secondly I would ask for a hint with qt-creator. Qt-Creator is, may be you know, an execellent IDE not only for developing QT applications. Yesterday I updated my Qt-Creater from version 2.2.0 to 2.3.0. When start the program from a shell, I can see a message which say some thing like "can't determine QT version" and the program ended imedeatedly, if the program is started in a Trinity environment. If the X server is forwarded - using "ssh -Y" - the program starts in a KDE 3.5 (Debian Lenny) environment without problems. At least my question is, does someone know how the QT version can be detected and has something changed in Trinity. May be, that Nokia i.e. the programm does not accept version 3.5.11 because it is not an official release. Thanks for your help and/or ideas Rolf

Hi all, I just downloaded and installed the new Mint Debian 201109. It says it's 100% compatible with repositories designed for Squeeze, but Trinity won't install due to over a dozen unresolved dependencies. Is there any obvious reason this is so, and anything simple I can do to fix it? Alternatively, is there another Debian-based, rolling-release distro on which Trinity will install without problems? It was mentioned on the Mint Debian 201109 thread the nightly builds could be installed, sources.list entires available. Since I use Virtualbox I gave it a try withDebian Sueeze/ Smooth install, to early to tell much but one item that stands out, I can know drag & drop/move/remove(uncheck)the column headers in kmail. Know thats the kind of change I can live with. Interface looks identical, I use KDE classic. missing package: desktop-base-trinity. -- Peace, Greg

[trinity-users] TDE package(s) installing kdesudo as unwanted "recommends" in Squeeze
by David Hare 21 Sep '11

21 Sep '11

I noticed when reinstalling kaffeine-trinity that also installed as "recommends" were : kdesudo-trinity, kpackage-trinity I do not use or want either of those on my Debian system and can't see the reason for this. Although it is not a problem for me to purge them, this could be seen by some Debian users as another example of enforced use of Ubuntu-style sudo on Squeeze/TDE It is not easy to work out whether installing (especially multiple packages) with "no-recommends" is a good thing or not; that sometimes means reduced functionality. My concern is, there are probably other TDE packages which behave similarly. I don't know if this counts as a bug or is for some reason intentional. Any comments?

Just FYI: does anybody else get "/bugzilla3/" on top of each bug report page in the TDE bugzilla?
by Alexey Loukianov 20 Sep '11

20 Sep '11

Hello 2 All, SUBJ pretty much says it all. Using Firefox 6.0.2 (binary from mozilla.com) on 32bit Fedora 14 I've got line "/bugzilla3/" displayed at the top of any TDE bug report. http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=399 http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=400 e.t.c. Also checked it with Konquerror and it also shows "/bugzilla3/" at the top of pages. Seems to me like minor TDE bugzilla configuration error. -- Best regards, Alexey Loukianov mailto:mooroon2@mail.ru System Engineer, Mob.:+7(926)218-1320 *nix Specialist

Desktop Icon Positions
by john 20 Sep '11

20 Sep '11

My Desktop icons seem to be deciding for themselves where they should appear. I have tried several times to keep the icons arranged the way I like - "By Type - Directories First". The arrangement lasts through maybe three logins, then I find the icons rearranged again. If it matters, I'm using Trinity 3.5.12 with Debian Squeeze. I have checked the file ~/.trinity/share/apps/kdesktop/IconPositions and nothing obvious is amiss, though I can't be certain I'd recognize a problem there. I'd be grateful for a clue. Thanks John

Firefox and/or Desktop folder
by Patrick Serru 17 Sep '11

17 Sep '11

Hello all, I did the same (double) error twice, with obviously the same result twice. The first time, I continue to use the system, which meant that I did not know where was the error. The objective was to install Firefox 5.0. 1 - I copied a directory /usr/local/firefox/ from a system used before 2 - I tried to edit a firefox icon coming also from the other system, 3 - I completely uninstalled firefox using Synaptic (that did not removed the ~/.mozilla/). At the end of stage 2, TDE changed their behavior: the icon (firefox) disappeared from the office, and TDE "showed" the launch of an application (clicking on a desktop icon) by in the magnifying. I had initially inhibited this option (called "bouncing cursor", I think). I do not know which of point two or three is causing the problem, but at the following reboot, TDE showed blue cursors and finally "Can not open theme file /opt/kde/share/apps/kdm/themes/kubuntu-kde3/ ". In the current working installation, there is no /opt/kde/ but /opt/kde3/. Once the session opened, there was no menu Start. (I am not ready to live without it!) I am currently with a screen size of 1152x864 that comes out of a magician's hat (this is the very first time it appens with THIS format!), while after the last system restore (and associated wasted time), throw in usual 1280x1024. I have already indicated the unsolved problem of ATI drivers installation in another post. TDE 3.12 and KMail
by Patrick Serru 15 Sep '11

15 Sep '11

Hello everyone, My old KMail3.10 directory contains a total of 1GB,for212internal directories. For each directory, I had to select all the e-mail content, then applied for registration under the "mbox" format, importable by other email-clients. This was because KDE4 did not offer a smooth transition from KMail3.5 (or I missed it!). Now I discover TDE and Thunderbird, I would like to return using KMail. My question is: "My KMail3.5 directory (and the 300ko kmailrc, including many filters) will be treated without difficulty by KMail3.12 or is there a risk of existence of time bombs in the bowels of KMail after this transition ? ATI, sound and console
by Patrick Serru 15 Sep '11

15 Sep '11

(sending again this mail, sorry if it was already sent but I did not receive any answer... I am also new in Thunderbird!) ------------------------------- Hello everyone, I salute the tremendous work of the development team and I thank them. I hope the spirit of this team will always remain, just as one who leads the project "Damned Small Linux", for exemple. I hope to permanently abandon my Suse 10.3 + KDE 3.5.10, and is keen to stay with KDE 3.5 TDE Trinity. The issues regarding this that I have with the "Trinity-Enterprise" distribution (kubuntu 10.10) are: SOUND: I have no sound. KMix opens with the mixer "PulseAudio" by default and I have to reconfigure each time in VIA_8237. Also, I use the entry "Line" physical and when the configuration is correct, this input is sent to the audio output of the computer and the level of output (input signal from the "Line", so) is well controlled. But there is no sound from TDE that is audible (noatun or amarok, for example) VIDEO: I can not install the drivers for my ATI graphics card. The packets manager says that the ATI drivers are installed. The various tutorials found are all refering to the Gnome menus... These difficulties are well borring, but I can wait for the next distribution, hopping that Gnome will coexist with TDE anabling to choise the window manager (gnome or tde) at the login time. Also: The "standard" console (i.e. reached with "Ctrl+Alt+F1") is reachable only once. Is it normal, being a SELinux feature, for exemple ? The key "page-up" does not work the way I know in Kconsole or in standard console: Typing "/etc/init.d/" then page-up displays the last command entered starting with "/etc/init.d/"... an other SELinux feature ? Thank you, Patrick

I'm still struggling with this, as follows: When I open a new directory with Konqueror, it frequently comes up in 'Icon View' rather than 'Text View'. I've tried changing and saving view profiles, and looking through every configuration file I can find to see why. I'm baffled. Does anyone have any ideas? And, as a possibly related question, in 'Settings' what do Remove Folder Properties and Save View Changes Per Folder Actually do (and mean, come to that)? cheers ant -- Sent from my linux system running Debian 6, desktop trinity-KDE. Kickoff menu unstable
by Francois Andriot 09 Sep '11

09 Sep '11

Hello, I'm currently using TDE 3.5.12 compiled on RHEL6. By default, kmenu is showing the classic KDE menu, which works very well. But when I switch to "Kickoff" menu, I have 2 issues: 1) The "K" button icon is automatically changed to the default KDE icon, and the word "Go!" is displayed alongside the button, even though I chose a custom icon and unchecked the option "Display text in K menu button". 2) Randomly (but quickly) when browsing the Kickoff menu, it hangs. Then the "kicker" process eats 100% cpu and I have to manually kill it and restart it. Re-switching to the classic menu makes both issues vanish ... Is anyone else having stability issue with kickoff ? (Note: I have the exact same behaviour with the current 3.5.13 SVN build) Thanks Francois Andriot

KWallet problem with LDAP
by John A. Sullivan III 08 Sep '11

08 Sep '11

Hello, all. I think this is more of a usage than a development question. Most of our applications authenticate against LDAP. Many of these same applications store their passwords in KWallet. If the password changes, KWallet remembers the old one until it fails and the user is prompted for a new one. But, when it fires off requests for several different applications at once, LDAP locks the account so users are unable to enter the new password. Has anyone found a way to work around this? I'll explain in more detail in case it is not clear. In our case, the culprit is usually Kontact and KOrgac. They may store passwords for an email account, several calendars, several address books, a task list, etc. When the user changes their LDAP password, the first time these application try to synchronize, they may send 8, 10, 12, however many requests for authentication depending on the number of email accounts, calendars, etc. All those requests at once with wrong passwords look like a brute force attack and LDAP locks the account. Any tips on getting around this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - John

Hi, Trinity didn't install cleanly on my system , never worked correctly , and now I need to clean things up. we have highly customized systems using local package repos, the install failed and I forced the trinity install using dpkg on the advise of someone who "knew", so this should not be taken as a comment on trinity quality. Installing K9copy on Maverick/Trinity
by daniele.manghi＠libero.it 31 Aug '11

31 Aug '11

Hello.I'm happily running Maverick/Trinity (binary distribution fromPearsoncomputing), and I've installed many packages, but allwith few dependencies. Now, I wish install K9copy.However I've seen that installing K9copy involves a lot ofdependencies, many of which are upgradings of the base KDEsoftware. Do you know if it'safe to install all that together withTrinity ? I would be very disappointing if I had to find out thatmy Trinity was jeopardized by modules from some kind of KDE4.x distribution.ThanksD.

Having done what's been said, I've managed to install xine-ui from network and run it against a DVD. I assume that from now on I'll be able to install more-or-less all what's available from network for maverick. This really means that I'll run an up-to-date Unix system with Trinity instead of KDE 4 - and I'm very happy. Thanks thanks thanks again
