Anyone have any experience with Kaffeine?
by dep 24 May '24

24 May '24

I'm glad Bill is happy with no TV. I would not be. To wit: https://ofb.biz/safari/article/1203.html The Hauppauge TV tuner arrived, and while it was a little fiddly -- and the author of the user guide makes no distinction between important and unimportant -- I got Kaffeine running nicely, with nice, clear pictures, EPG, everything . . . except sound. Not a peep, but an occasional crackle, which is disconcerting. It seems as if Kaffeine is abandonware, and there is little online about it, so I am on my own unless someone here knows the application, or another app that can stream live local TV via a tuner dongle. Does anyone? dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Having trouble changing desktops RPi 5
by dep 22 May '24

22 May '24

This is embarrassing. I can't get TDE to start. Downloaded and installed uneventfully. Ran sudo update-alternatives --config-xsession-manager and selected /opt/trinity/bin/starttde from the list. Reboot, no joy. Per online information, edited /var/lib/AccountsServices/users/<my-user-name> to change XSession=LXDE-pi-x to first tde and when that didn't work TDE. Reboot. Still have LXDE. I'm clearly missing something. If anyone knows what it is, please tell me. And in any case, once the answer is found I'll write it up and submit it for possible inclusion in the docs. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

kmail and keyboard
by dep 22 May '24

22 May '24

hi, everybody . . . first, the discussion of kmail passwords has puzzled me a little. for *decades* i've set up kmail to store my password, and have not been prompted about it since. i vaguely remember being prompted for kwallet at one time or another, usually when logging in to Proton VPN, but that's not happened in a long time, either. in that i've had the same configuration for years, i can't remember what i did to bring this about. what i have encountered instead is another issue that might be kmail or it might be something else. it is sufficiently strange that it might be of interest, so i'll describe it. i use ProtonMail. i hate webmail, so am happy that there is an application, ProtonMail Bridge, that does the heavy lifting as to login, encryption, and so on. it logs into the server, and kmail logs into it. kmail goes to 127.0.0.1 for the mail. the bridge application goes out and uses the mile-long ProtonMail password to log in to the server. the bridge is supported for thunderbird and a couple of other mail clients of which kmail is not one, but the setup is pretty straightforward except for one thing. frequently -- not always, but often -- my kmail inbox gets not just the mail but phantom copies of it. in the same mail run it might get 20 messages with six of them seemingly doubled. one of the two is the email message, no problem, while the other one is blank. the blank one has peculiar aspects. for one thing, i can't delete it in the normal way. i delete it, but it doesn't go away. instead, it has a line struck through it in the message list. when i restart kmail later, it is now gone. if i haven't deleted it, it is still there. probably unrelated, every so often, maybe once a month, a mail check will cause an eruption of mail going back a couple months, and i get old mail all over again. as i said, this is probably not kmail-caused. i mention it because maybe someone here will say, "hey! i know what that is!" and mention something i've missed. sadly, for all its goodness Proton is happy to cling to the "that client is unsupported" excuse. another oddity involves my keyboard, which i like very much -- nice and loud -- but it is a USB keyboard. it behaves strangely: it works just fine, as now, but then after a few days it doesn't seem to register some keys and endlessly repeats others. but i don't think it's the keyboard, in that rebooting fixes it 100 percent of the time, for a few more days. any guesses? -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

Monitors plural gamma channels plural?
by Mike Bird 22 May '24

22 May '24

I have been trying and failing to get my three monitors, two of which are ancient and all of which are different, to produce matching colors. I'm using the NVIDIA non-free driver. For purposes of this discussion let's ignore the hardware color controls (which are inadequate). I can use the NVIDIA X Server Settings utility which has excellent controls for R, G, and B but intermittently tells me that something else has changed the color settings. I can use Trinity Control Center / Peripherals / Display but the Monitor Gamma function affects all three monitors simultaneously. Unlike other gamma controls that seem to prefer a number near 2.2, this seems to prefer a number near 1. I can use Trinity Control Center / System Administration / / Monitor & Display which purports to control the three monitors separately but the instant I move any gamma control by the smallest increment my right-hand monitor (no matter which monitor I have selected) looks like a 1980's CGA display. (This can be fixed by rebooting or by starting the NVIDIA X Server Settings utility.) There is also Trinity Control Center / Peripherals / Color Profile which I have not used, and where everything is unchecked in hopes of not confusing myself even further. I have been unable to find anything online by searching, although some CGA-like scrambling was mentioned in passing in this thread: https://www.spinics.net/lists/trinity-users/msg11883.html Can anyone point me to information on how TDE gamma controls work, how they are supposed to be used, and/or how to stop whatever in the background is overriding NVIDIA X Server Settings? Thanks! --Mike

TDE and vintage computers
by Darrell Anderson 20 May '24

20 May '24

I would like to offer that with my efforts to build TDE on vintage systems, I built TDE R14.1.2 on Slackware 14.2 64-bit (gcc 5.5.0) and Slackware 14.1 32-bit (gcc 4.8.2). Both systems are EOL as of Dec. 2023. I did not build every package but core dependencies and packages built and run. I had to find some patches to back port. For example, some patches related to hotpluggable hwlib and ensuring '-std=c++11' is declared with tqt3. These days my brain is entrenched in old fart elderly territory and I have my days exhibiting grumpy old man traits. I have been out of the loop for many years with this kind of development and tend to lose patience easily. That said, that I have built the latest TDE on vintage systems is remarkable. Dare I say that the 14.1 builds are running on Pentium I/II single core systems with less than 512 MB of RAM and a 3.10.107 kernel? A tad slow? Yes, but everything functions and the slowness is mostly caused by PATA drives. I am impressed with the developers far more than a grumpy old man being able to build TDE on vintage systems. Good job devs. :)

Speaking of flatpak
by dep 19 May '24

19 May '24

Something about flatpak seems a little hinky to me -- Ubuntu is getting too heavily into data collection lately, and flatpak seems part of it, though I haven't researched it fully; too much to do and Ubuntu avoidance is easy. Best I can tell, appimage is a little more pristine, at least for now. Which is fortunate -- just found and installed the appimage for IPTVnator, which is likeHypnotix but written in electron. Appimage was a good way to try it out. When I liked it I d/led the .deb which, mirabile dictu, installed uneventfully (so I can now watch Iran TV about the helicopter crash there that seems to have killed high government officials there today; I need a Farsi mental appimage to understand it, though). Here, if it's of interest to anyone: https://github.com/4gray/iptvnator/releases To populate it: https://iptv-org.github.io/iptv/index.m3u Of course if you get an appimage you need to set it as executable in its properties before you can run it. As I said, it seems ceteris paribus better than flatpak, though I could be wrong. dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

I am wondering, how do I import my mail from EVOLUTION that I used in The MATE Desktop to KMAIL in TDE? I also accidentally opened KMAIL and added this folder set that I will not use due to it saving emails in the .mbx format. I'd rather keep them in the same format that EVO uses, which I believe is MH Format? Isn't that what KMAIL uses? Build requirements
by Darrell Anderson 18 May '24

18 May '24

Where in the wiki are the expected build environment requirements listed (and not out of date)? I'm am trying to build TDE 14.1.2 on Slackware 15.0 32-bit. Fails to build because of a "Value too large for defined data type" error. This seems to be a specific 32-bit error. I have not read anything that 32-bit no longer is supported in TDE. I'm trying to build 14.1.2 on some vintage 32-bit systems. The tqt3 build fails with many errors and fatal errors. Cmake version 3.5.2 is installed but tqt3 does not use cmake. While vintage systems are EOL, R14.0.12 built fine on these systems. So something else has changed or was introduced since them. Thanks.

TDE on Raspberry Pi 5
by dep 12 May '24

12 May '24

Hi, everybody . . . good to be back. I've been playing with a Raspberry Pi 5 as part of my better smart television project. (https://ofb.biz/safari/article/1204.html if you're interested.) It did not take me long to rediscover just how awful modern KDE is. Example: Try adding something to kicker on the PiOS desktop (after, of course, putting Wayland out of my misery). It is a multi-stage process with no guarantee of success and considerably possibility of breaking kicker and other things, which I've done repeatedly. I was delighted to see today that there is TDE for Raspberry. Before I jump in, though, I thought it would be good to jump in and ask if there are any little landmines in it -- the default PiOS is nothing except landmines -- that I need to work around. Also, whether installation will bring along the applications I've already configured -- Firefox ESR, the WebApp Manager from Mint (and a bunch of webapps made thereby), and so on, as well as the GUI configuration stuff and menu items. Not a big deal if it doesn't, but I'd want to set aside time to come up with alternatives. What need I know? Hope everyone is well and happy. -- dep Pictures: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/depscribe/album Column: https://ofb.biz/author/dep/

tdebase handbooks
by Darrell Anderson 10 May '24

10 May '24

This is a developer question but I am posting here as well. Perhaps somebody can help. I'm building 14.1.2 packages on Slackware 15.0 using the ray-v build scripts. The default in those scripts is not to build any handbooks. I have been tweaking the scripts to compile the handbooks. For some reason the related handbooks never compile in the tdebase package. The handbooks are compiling in other packages. The DBUILD_DOC="ON" option is set. The tdebase sources contain the related docbook files. I do not notice anything in the build log, but I don't really know what to look for. What should I look for that might cause the handbooks to not build only in tdebase? Thanks for any guidance.

TDE R14.1.2 released, new target started…

Hi all, after R14.1.2 was released, the window for the development of R14.1.3 has already been opened. The first pull-requests have already been merged, new translations are merged, the first builds of the packages was launched. If you used the Preliminary Stable Builds repository only temporarily, and you prefer to stick on the official final release, it is now the best time to switch to the official repository. The packages in both repositories are identical for some time, so it is smooth to change the apt source if you want. Otherwise, we will be happy if you help us in testing the upcoming release. Publishing the first R14.1.3 preliminary packages I suppose on 8 May. I noticed that some wayland-related packages are installed when gnome is installed. gnome and wayland are both the default for debian/12.5./bookworm Since I normally do not use wayland, but rather use nvidia commercial drivers for x-windows provided by debian package system, I am unsure about wayland. tde-14.1.2 and gnome3 on debian/12.5/bookworm - package conflicts
by trinitydesktop.9dio1＠simplelogin.com 04 May '24

04 May '24

Hello. Just installed update to tde 14.1.2 and working fine. Thanks again for a wonderful desktop to use on my debian/12.5.bookworm system. I also use some commercial packages installed over the years, and all has been great. However, recently, I have one commercial package upgrade that is trying to claim because I use tde, I am seeing this problem (it won't run). BTW, if I use the previous version of said package, it works fine. Said package developer/tech support claim it works fine for him on default gnome desktop for debian/12.5. Hence, the incentive to send in this tech support question to tde conflicts that have shown up when I install gnome-3. To install gnome on debian when it is not the default, I issued "sudo apt install task-gnome-desktop". During this install, gnome decides there is a conflict, and wants me to remove "desktop-base-trinity" and "tde-trinity" in order to proceed. This I do. After the new installation, apt is telling me that the following packages are no longer needed and I can autoremove them: "arts-trinity imlib-base imlib11 kig-trinity kuickshow-trinity libarts1-audiofile-trinity libarts1-mpeglib-trinity libtqt3-integration-trinity mpeglib-trinity synaptic-trinity tde-core-trinity tdebase-trinity tdeedu-trinity tdegraphics-trinity tdemultimedia-trinity xcalib". This I do NOT do ! Everything seems to be running as normal on both tde and gnome3. I still use tdm to login, and I can choose between tde and gnome (and variants). If I try to reinstall "desktop-base-trinity" or "tde-trinity", then it looks like a large chunk of gnome packages will be removed, and gnome will not remain intact. I am concerned to also remove the trinity packages listed above for fear it might break my tde desktop. What is the best way to install/configure where tde and gnome can co-exist on debian/12.5. Not that I will slow down using tde in any way, but there might be a reason to run gnome where needed in order to comply. BTW, my said package fails exactly the same way on gnome3 as it is doing on tde, and their tech support is still trying to help. Thanks in advance if you try to help on this.

They seem to come in dozens or half-dozens, by the way, for reasons unknown to me: above a certain number, they always seem to come in multiples of 6 or 12, like 24, 36, 42. When it gets to be a couple dozen zombies, this irks me, and that's when I want to call in the zombie-killing experts. No, I don't think it's "good" for so many zombies to persist after their parents have quit running, but I also don't notice that my system runs any worse. When I thought that I had identified one of my zombies as one of those mysterious w processes, and tried to kill that, that's when I shut down my session and lost my work; which, obviously, was worse that putting up with zombies. It seems to me that the mysterious w is not any one process, but rather a kind of process that has become a zombie. Otherwise, there could not be, as sometimes happens, half a dozen processes named w. As for the age of my machine or system: the nature of Devuan in spirit is more deliberately set against newfangled shiny toys, and tends to rely on the more reliable stone tools used the hardcore caveman geeks. Bill P.S. Apologies if I sent some duplicate emails. For some reason, my response to Jim, with attachments, did not go through. Please consider this one to be the authorized version ... if it goes through.

I don't think there is a mechanism in KDE3 or Trinity to dynamically size the cursors, but while I was poking around looking for additional ones, I found "Material Cursors" on this web page <https://www.debugpoint.com/best-cursor-themes/> (among some other intriguing ones). I just ran into polkit hell + network-manager - like Bill. This is how to get network-manager working for your user, so you do not need to run it as root: Check your permissions - if you get "yes" on all lines, you are good, but then you won't have network-manager issues at all: $ nmcli gen permissions If you don't get "yes on all lines, then create this file: #/etc/polkit-1/rules.d/50-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.rules polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) { if (action.id == "org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.network-control") return "yes"; }); Now check again - all lines should say "yes": $ nmcli gen permissions Now you can do bad stuff with network connections from all your systms users, but as you most likely are the only system user it should be ok: $ nmtui Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

Need Help Getting Trinity Desktop Environment Running in Termux Proot-Distro Debian
by ddp619＠icloud.com 22 Apr '24

22 Apr '24

Hello everyone, I've been trying to get the Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) up and running in Termux Proot-Distro Debian, but I've hit a roadblock and could use some assistance. I've included the log file below for reference: ``` termux-x11 :1 -xstartup starttde [starttde] Starting starttde. [starttde] This script is /opt/trinity/bin/starttde [starttde] TDE version is R14.1.1 [starttde] TDE base directory is /opt/trinity [starttde] TDEHOME is not set. [starttde] TDE_FULL_SESSION: true [starttde] TDE_SESSION_UID: 1000 [tdeinit] Shutting down running client. ``` It seems that I'm encountering an issue with connecting to the system message bus and starting the Trinity hardware control dbus daemon. Additionally, there's a problem with setting the ownership of `/tmp/.ICE-unix` to root. I've tried troubleshooting on my own but haven't been able to find a solution. If anyone has experience with running TDE in Termux or has any insights into what might be causing these errors, I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you in advance!

tdemid default output
by Thierry de Coulon 21 Apr '24

21 Apr '24

Hello all, I happen to have inherited an "old" but stil kicking SoundCanvas SC-88 Pro. So I took out my midisport 2x2 and fired tdemid to see what I could do with it. Works very well as a matter of fact. The only "problem" is that everytime I load a midi file, tdemid defaults to MIDI Through port 0 and I have to change it to midisport. I took a look at the configuration file, but there is nothing there about default output. Maybe it's possible to add some instruction, but where can I find the correct syntax, if any? Thierry

Alternative E-mail provider (off topic)
by Gianluca Interlandi 04 Apr '24

04 Apr '24

Dear TDE list, Sorry, this may be off topic. I am looking for an email provider that is not Google, Yahoo or Apple. Recently, these providers have tightened the ability to forward e-mail as detailed in this article by UW: https://itconnect.uw.edu/tools-services-support/it-systems-infrastructure/e… In particular, I am looking for the following: 1) Ability to access through IMAP 2) Ability to set up automatic forwarding while leaving one copy of a message in the INBOX 3) Possibly free or low cost with enough storage > 1 GB and ability to have attachments >= 25 MB. I have been looking at AOL and GMX. AOL is now owned by Yahoo, so it may have the same issues. GMX is attractive especially since it allows attachments up 250 GB. However, I wonder whether e-mails sent through GMX have to go all the way to Germany and then back to the US (making the process slow)? Or does GMX mail have servers all over the world including the US? Any other recommendations? Also, I would like to use IMAP using Alpine and I read that "Alpine also assumes that the Inbox is located at /var/spool/mail/user_name on the email SMTP server": https://opensource.com/article/21/5/alpine-linux-email I am curious whether today's e-mail providers store their e-mails in a /var/spool/mail/ folder. Re: tdeinit starting twize ...
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 28 Mar '24

28 Mar '24

For the record - and in case somebody falls into the same trap: I found the culprit: live-coniig handles parts of the boot process when running from a live image. That program is a decade old and has a strange idea on autologon and Xorg. If "autologin" is not explictly disabled, Xorg is started early in the boot process, bypassing sysv. When sysv later starts tdm it thinks X is not running which results in some demons started again which results in utter chaos. So to prevent this disable autologin: LIVE_CONFIG_CMDLINE="live-config.noautologin live-config.debug" Note: If tdm was configurd to autologon, it will still autologon when booted from the iso. Multi-monitor layout resetting itself every logon
by bonkmaykr 23 Mar '24

23 Mar '24

Howdy, I've got an issue where the layout and mode of my displays resets to the default at every login. This is despite me setting up the monitors in the TDE Control Center, both locally as my user and globally as root, creating an X config using the NVIDIA X Server Settings, and having no such issue previously when I was still using KDE Plasma. I'm using the latest NVIDIA proprietary drivers on EndeavourOS, with a 1920x1080@60hz display on DP-1 and a 3440x1440@144hz display on DP-2. The ultrawide 1440p display is on the right slightly above the smaller one, but Trinity and TDM both repeatedly place them in the opposite arrangement with the smaller monitor as the default, sitting on the top right corner of the larger one. Both displays default to 60hz at login. I've also tried enabling "Automatically apply profile on startup" and creating a profile, but when trying to reload it, X spits out an error "xrandr: cannot find mode 3440x1440". I don't get any such error when logging on, only when trying to load it manually from control center, which makes me think it's not even trying. I have not tested using xrandr manually from the command line. How do I get Trinity to remember my monitor layout correctly? Is this a known issue? \-- [bonkmaykr.xyz][] Proud webmaster of KangWorlds. Sent from Proton Mail mobile [bonkmaykr.xyz]: https://bonkmaykr.xyz

Feature Request? Adjust Mouse Sensitivity through kcontrol
by Wirlaburla 19 Mar '24

19 Mar '24

Hi folks. I have a friend who recently struggled with his previous desktop environment so I slid Trinity towards him, and he has been using it since. There is a small problem though, and one I never noticed: There seems to be no way to change the mouse sensitivity under the settings. I thought this was crazy when he told me he couldn't find it, but alas, he wasn't blind. There is no slider anywhere for adjusting the mouse sensitivity. "Well, perhaps this was an accidental regression at some point", I thought, as I loaded KDE3 on a VM. "There is no way there was no slider in this desktop for something as simple as mouse sensitivity." As wild as I thought that claim would be, there also wasn't a slider in KDE3, only an option to change the polling rate on supported mice, which explained to me the historic reason as to why. My friend is setting the sensitivity through xinput right now, but perhaps it is time to add a slider to change mouse sensitivity. Those with highly-sensitive mice shall Trinity with no fear! And just to check, I tried turning the Pointer Threshold down and Acceleration up to see if that is a hacky way to change sensitivity. It is not. Or perhaps we are both blind as bats and the option was already there, right in front of us. Please let us know. -- Wirlaburla

Understanding kernel versions in Debian
by Gianluca Interlandi 18 Mar '24

18 Mar '24

Dear all, May be off topic. I am trying to understand why Debian (especially stable) has the reputation as being more conservative than other distributions. If I look at distrowatch (for example comparing to openSUSE and Fedora): Kernel LibreOffice Release date Bookworm 6.1.27 7.4.5 2023-06-10 Trixie 6.6.15 24.2.0 2023-06-11 Leap 15.5 5.14.21 7.4.3.2 2023-06-07 Tumbleweed 6.7.9 24.2.1 2024-03-17 Fedora 6.5.6 7.6.2 2023-11-07 I don't know much about the meaning of kernel versions, but I know that major versions are often developed in parallel. Is 5.14.21 newer than 6.1.27? Judging alone from the kernel version numbers (and other packages), it looks like Leap would be the most conservative while Debian Testing (Trixie) almost as up-to-date (concerning newer Linux packages) as Tumbleweed and ahead of Fedora (released later). remove sleep, suspend, hybernate, sleep and combos from logout menu
by Rody 14 Mar '24

14 Mar '24

Hi, Is there a way to remove the sleep, suspend, hybernate, sleep and combos from the logout menu within Trinity? So far I have been unable to find configuration options for this. Therefor I used polkit to disable these options system wide. I used the following code in a file I created for this purpose in: /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d [Disable suspend (logind)] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.login1.suspend;org.freedesktop.login1.suspend-multiple-sessions;org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate;org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate-multiple-sessions ResultActive=no ResultInactive=no ResultAny=no This would remove all the undesired options in the logout menu. However, after I updated to Trinity 14.1.1, the logout menu has now added a freeze option. Searching for that on the internet gives me just about all the possible results related to hanging or crashed systems but not what I'm looking for. So my question is: a) does Trinity have a native way to remove these suspend/hybernate/freeze/aso options? if not, then b) does anyone know what needs to be added to the above Action line to let polkit do it for me? I'm running Trinity on Devuan 4, so no systemd here. Regards, Rody

tdeinit startin twize ...
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 13 Mar '24

13 Mar '24

This is the followup of "dcopserver starting twize". As I am just creating a new Devuan+TDE ISO I ran into this naging problem again. When booting from the ISO created with refractasnapshot /etc/init.d/tde starts tdeinit twize in parallel. This leads to dcopserver running twize - sometimes one for root and one for $USER, sometimes both for $USER. My workaround for now: "service stop tdm; killall dcopserver" restarts TDE once. Now my question is: where is that racecondition hidden that makes /etc/init.d/tde to start tdeinit twice in parallel? Any idea? Qt5 software in TDE
by Darrell Anderson 10 Mar '24

10 Mar '24

Is there a recommended strategy to deal with Qt5 software in TDE? This is somewhat like dealing with GTK software. On my systems, Qt5 programs look awful in TDE, mostly really tiny fonts and ignoring themes. Qt5 tools look normal when I use KDE. I am aware of qt5ct. That tool provides some sanity with Qt5 tools in TDE, but usage needs to be limited to TDE. Otherwise qt5ct introduces its own frustrations in KDE. Thanks.

network issues - tdenetworkmanager
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 20 Feb '24

20 Feb '24

Now I got bitten by the same problem - and got solution (at least for devuan) - so this might be interesting for Bill :) It turned out that the compination of "apparmor" plus "pulseaudio" made networkmanager go kind of numb. It would not connect to my wifi for ever. Retrying did not change anything nor did turning the wifi device on/off change anything. Last entry in syslog was always "wlan0: associated", but it looked like ip address was received. Now removing "apparmor" increased the chace of getting ip adresses via dhcp to ~ 50%. After removing pulseaudio and pulseaudio-modules-bluetooth the rate is back to normal aka 100%. Note: I had pulseaudio to connect to bluetooth speakers and my problems begun after installing it. At last I got the speakers working with "bluealsa" --> kmix is not confused with the "pulseaudio" device sneeking in as first coundcard. feature request - a way to download *all* TDE-Trinity packages for a system
by William Morder 08 Feb '24

08 Feb '24

I don't know if this is totally selfish and/or solipsistic of me, but I would like to have a way to download *all* available packages appropriate to my system. If there is some command that will do this, that will work, as I can pick and choose on my own. A tool like aptoncd would be better, but I can find anything like it any more. Best thing about images created with aptoncd is that apt treats them exactly like repositories, so I don't need to cobble together self-styled hacks and use dpkg, but can just depend or apt to find the right combination of packages and dependencies. Debian still offers, I believe, extra CD or DVD images of the extra packages in their repositories. In addition to the installation images, there are usually extra discs, 1, 2, 3 and 4, containing extra packages. I used to search all over Devuan to find the same, but now it seems that they, too, have caught up, and offer disc images of extras. Or perhaps I have only recently discovered where they keep them hidden? My reason for this request is related to my recent previous posts: sometimes I find myself in a remote place, or in a crazy situation, where there is no internet access, or where -- such as recently -- flooding or some other disaster has knocked out internet. Yet, while I have no internet, I still need to have a working computer for other things that I do offline; and now, suddenly, my machine gives me problems, and I need to do a system reinstallation, or at least to install some new and unfamiliar packages. Thanks for any help, Bill

Trinity File associations for http/https scheme
by Wirlaburla 05 Feb '24

05 Feb '24

Hey Trinity Folks. I'm having trouble getting xdg to play nicely with the file associations and settings I have for Trinity. While TDE applications follow them just fine, non-TDE programs don't seem to. That's fine, I tweaked xdg myself. The issue is that something happened and now non-TDE applications don't follow my "Open http and https URLs in an application based on the contents of the URL" (in TDE Components > Default Applications > Web Browser) anymore. Now when I click an http URL directly to an image or video, it opens up in my web browser. I'm not really sure what's changed because it was working fine before. My initial thoughts are to find out how TDE opens "in an application based on the contents" and just assign it to xdg but I'm unsure of what that is or where to find it. Thanks. -- Wirlaburla

using nmtui or other tools to change hostname
by William Morder 04 Feb '24

04 Feb '24

Another thing I do from time to time is to change my host name, as I must share a network with many other people. The administrators of this network insist on using a ridiculously insecure password, which doubtless could be cracked by a script kiddie in a few minutes; moreover, the password has never been changed in at least 7 or 8 years. Myself and others have recommended changing the password, but nothing happens. After I did a little messing with that program that Nik suggested, nmtui, I wondered what else I might use it to do. I like these stone tools; once one has figured out the basics, then at least there is the possibility of controlling the machine. Even before I started this thread -- or the previous thread which spawned it, regarding my network problems, or tdenetworkmanager -- I was wondering about this problem of the hostname. Is there a way to change my hostname easily, without reinstalling my system? This (nmtui) seems like the right tool for the job; although of course, when running Linux, there are sure to be dozens of others that do the same or similar. These are probably stupid questions, and a thousand people out there can answer it: but the man pages do not cover these possibilities. I want to know, first, if one ought to disconnect from internet (or to connect) when changing the hostname like this. It seems to me that trying to change the hostname on a live connection may cause problems. On the other hand, when I am doing a fresh installation, I must set the hostname on a live connection, but then it is a new, unnamed connection. Second, should I run nmtui (or similar tool) as root in order to change my hostname? When I tried it out earlier, it seemed like it could do nothing with my connection unless I was running as root; but then, before my fresh installation, I could not use tdenetworkmanager, could not use internet at all, except as root. Can I, in ordinary circumstances, change my hostname without first becoming root? After I change my host name (that is, after a fresh installation), I seem to have no problems for a while. What I want is to be able to change the hostname periodically, without doing a complete new installation. Also, I block pings with my firewall, that kind of thing, but eventually these problems start up again, because some people out there (or their automated cracking scripts) apparently have nothing better to do than to search for vulnerabilities in other people's machines. All ideas or suggestions are welcome. Bill

network issues - tdenetworkmanager
by William Morder 03 Feb '24

03 Feb '24

Okay, so I appear to have internet again, more or less, but now there's something odd happening with tdenetworkmanager. For the past day or so, since sometime Sunday evening, I have not been able to use internet at all. I keep checking the connection, try out the installation image on a flash drive, just to see if networks are showing up there, but nothing conclusive. Then it occurred to me to start tdenetworkmanager as root, and presto! I can configure it to work, and everything is back to normal; except, I cannot close down the root version of tdenetworkmanager, then return to the non-root version. The non-root tdenetworkmanager, just myself as user, still will not connect. The networks show up, but once I try to connect, they disappear, and I cannot get on at all. This does not seem right. Awhile back I resolved some connectivity issues (been meaning to mention this, but it's an old thread now); I booted into my backup desktop, xfce, started xfce as root, set my local network so that I did not connect automatically, then got out of root, and everything since then ran fine. I returned to my Trinity desktop, and did not think about xfce again, until I had to do some reinstallation. Until these past two weeks, and now again the past day or so, I have not had any network issues. Everything has worked just fine, until we had flooding in our building, and internet was out for nearly two weeks past, up until sometime Friday night or Saturday. Then I had a day or so of my usual internet, then a couple days past where I have these problems just described above. And now this: only able to use the tdenetworkmanager as root. Also, it seems I cannot install or use wicd, which is my usual backup. Does any of this make any sense? Am I losing my mind, or is it the machines that are making me crazy? Bill

by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 30 Jan '24

30 Jan '24

Hi all! I jus ran into an interesting problem when running inside VirtualBox: I created a installation that works perfectly fine. Then I created a live iso from this installation using refractasnapshot. Booting that iso seads to two instances of dcopserver beeing started --> mouse an keyboard are non operational. When I remove ~/.DCOP* and then "killall dcopserver" then Xorg testarts and I end with a perfectly working TDE. So, does anybody have any idea what causes dcopseerver to spawn twice? Or better said, why $TDEDIR/bin/dcopserver_shutdown in starttde does leave a running dcopserver instance? TDE repositories - keyring, etc. - problems?
by William Morder 27 Jan '24

27 Jan '24

I seem to be having problems updating my sources.list, so I am wondering if it's just me, or is everybody else having problems, too. I checked the TDE page for repositories, but they're still the same as what I have. Just to complicate matters even more for myself, we have been having big problems with our internet here, due to flooding and damage. For the past two weeks, it has been hard even to send and receive emails. However, last night and this morning, things seem back almost to normal. Today I am listening to online radio while downloading some television news programs, doing other work online. But now my Trinity repositories seem rather uncertain or unstable. Here's the error message I get: W: GPG error: http://tde-mirror.yosemite.net/trinity/deb/trinity-r14.1.x daedalus Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG C93AF1698685AD8B Trinity Desktop Environment Archive Signing Key E: The repository 'http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-r14.1.x daedalus Release' is not signed. N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default. N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details. Cannot install TDE on PCLinuxOS live CD
by Michele Calgaro 04 Jan '24

04 Jan '24

Hi Francois, a user on the mastodon channel was trying to install TDE on PCLinuxOS following the instructions on the TDE site (https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/PCLinuxOS_Trinity_Repository_Installation_I…). Step 2 fails complaining that the pkglist file can not be fecthed, but it is indeed reachable from a web browser. (Failed to fetch http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/rpm/pclinuxos/trinity-r14/RPMS… 404 Not Found) I did a quick test in a VM and I can replicate the issue. Maybe something is wrong with the contents of the file? Are you able to take a look? Thanks and Merry Christmas. Cheers Michele

KDE connect
by James D Freels 19 Dec '23

19 Dec '23

I was wondering if any of my fellow TDE users and TDE developers have ever experimented with the KDE connect app/system. I have installed it on my Debian/12 system and Android phone, and it appears to be working. However, I don't think I am using all of the functionality, and cannot find documentation on how to do so. It seems like a powerful thing to have for connectivity between the desktop and phone. This might be a great addition to the TDE desktop. Regards, and Merry Christmas to all ! -- James D. how to restart dcop launcher ?
by William Morder 15 Dec '23

15 Dec '23

Just wondering if there is a way to do this, such as: sudo /etc/init.d/<dcop or whatever> restart I don't know what caused this issue; maybe it was because I had left my laptop running without rebooting for a very long time? Everything else seems to be running as I want (fingers crossed), so I have just been able to relax a bit and let the machine go, as I have got it properly trained, and it never disobeys me. So this was a surprise. What happened, first, is that I could not check email, even after I had just sent an email a few minutes earlier. Then when I tried to open a new window in konqueror, I got the same message about dcop launcher. When I rebooted at last, everything seems back to normal, but I wonder if this is not a sign of other problems that I need to address. It seems that restarting dcop would do the trick, but I know very little about this part of how these things actually work. Any recommendations or insights are welcome. Nothing urgent, I think, but I would still like better to understand what's going on. Bill

pulseaudio issues after installing NVIDIA driver
by Gianluca Interlandi 08 Dec '23

08 Dec '23

Dear all, Sorry if this may be off topic for TDE. I have a NVIDIA GT 1030 video card. I installed the proprietary driver version 535.146.02. The audio works fine from a fresh boot. However, if I recover from either suspend or hibernate pulseaudio stops working. The TDE sounds still work and mplayer can also play sound. However, firefox and vlc cannot. If I start vlc with a simple movie with sound, it says: Audio output failed: The audio device "default" could not be used: Connection refused. I did not have this problem with the opensource nouveau driver. Is there a way to restart pulseaudio? I tried with pulseaudio --kill pulseaudio --start But that didn't make a difference. It seems that alsasound works but not pulseaudio. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this would be appreciated. Thanks! Gianluca PS: Also when I click on kmix there are now three choices: "Pulseaudio", "HDA Intel" and "HDA NVidia". Before installing the driver there were only the first two. ----------------------------------------------------- Gianluca Interlandi, PhD gianluca(a)u.washington.edu +1 (206) 685 4435 http://gianluca.today/ Department of Bioengineering University of Washington, Seattle WA U.S.A. -----------------------------------------------------

Multiple monitors and full screen
by Nick Koretsky 07 Dec '23

07 Dec '23

I got myself a second monitor and got everything setup to my liking with TDE, except one annoying behaviour. When a program goes into "full screen" mode on one monitor (like media player or youtube in web browser) it covers kicker panels (as it should, everything is correct here), but as soon as any window on another monitor gets focus, panels appear on top of that fulls screen window. Setting "Allow other windows to cover panel" fixes this issue, but introduces other undesirable behaviour - maximize now covers panels, and windows snaps to actual edges of the screen, not to panels Is there any way to prevent panels from showing on top of out-of-focus fullscreen window on another monitor or do something like "allow only fullscreen windows to cover panel"? -- Nick Koretsky (nick.koretsky(a)gmail.com)

Looney Tune: running on Athlon XP & 1G RAM???
by Felix Miata 06 Dec '23

06 Dec '23

I have a bunch of Mageia 8 installations, including a few on 32 bits. 8 support just expired, so I've updated most of them for the last time, some to backported 6.1 kernels, others staying on 5.15. My only Athlon XP locks up locally booted to TDM on the 6.1 kernel, but seems fine on 5.15. Booted 6.1 to multi-user.target, and TDE started with startx, seems to be fine, indicating it's only TDM with the 6.1 kernel problem. The only dmesg/journal clues found from TDM and 6.1 seem to be timeout related, and only in the journal. Same PC with Bookworm and 6.1 seem fine too. Any similar observations? Anybody still using a 32bit Athlon with TDE? -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. Linux User #211409 ** a11y rocks! My current stunt is a secure tablet. That is impossible with Apple products but is relatively easy with Google hardware. (In case there is interest, a hot take on the project is here: https://ofb.biz/safari/article/1161.html ) It is amazing the number of applications that reintroduce problems solved a generation ago. There is, for instance, *no* good mobile browser. So I was happy and horrified to install Emacs a few minutes ago. For those of us who are nostalgic, it looks as awful as it did 25 years ago. For those of us who want to get work done, it is in all other respects as awful as it was 25 years ago. New MX-Linux with TDE ISO
by Thierry de Coulon 27 Nov '23

27 Nov '23

Hello all, I've been using MX-Linux for more than a year and recently decided to play with MX-Snapshot, a tool that let's you create an installation ISO from a running system. So I have installed the latest MX (23.1, based on Debian Bookworm), with kernel 6.5.0, then I added Trinity and started creating ISOs. Installation only succeeds if you use lightdm for the process, but TDM is installed and dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity is (almost) all that is required to get a full TDE based MX-Linux. It seems Mega accepts that I upload an ISO and share it, so if anyone wishes to try, here are the links: Iso file: https://mega.nz/file/1Xt1jIZL#h0VcKZaSH0eSE1INm5NOxiiywWBa1J0T9ZDmHLBFS5Q md5 file: https://mega.nz/file/kWVh0YQb#iWJ3cVkDpXHPS0wENA6knM0AthK66g8u-12zYFVjyak ReadMe file https://mega.nz/file/NfUTjQ5B#iSzIBWYSZ-Xfqn25RFOf2_CYKRbTUn40tJMb_g9VWAc If you do try, I'd like to get a feed back (what worked, what did not). TDE does not open
by Ken Heard 15 Nov '23

15 Nov '23

Sometime since 2023-11-10, when it was created, an email thread with this title disappeared from my email client. Fortunately I had the presence of mind to copy to a text file the contents of that thread; so the content was not lost. Three people also contributed to this thread, Mike Bird, Thierry de Coulon and Peter. I hope that they at least still have that that thread so they will know what it am talking about in this posting, as it is a continuation of that thread and would not have been possible without their collective help. I was able to download from the desktop computer a copy of file ‘.xsession-errors’. It is attached to this posting, all 924 linesof it, with the title ‘TDE-xsession-errors.odt’, no more dot and everybody has permission to read it. Interestingly enough, the ‘.xsession-errors’ file for the laptop contains only 894 lines. After examining the desktop .xsession-errors of all the possibility for errors which could cause TDE not to open, I was able to identify only one, the UID. The .xsession-errors used 1001 as the UID. At some point I changed my default UID from 1001 to 1000. (The UID on the .xsession-errors for the laptop is and always was 1000.) In view of the foregoing I think the best thing for me to do now is to reinstall Bookworm and TDE completely. For Thierry’s information both computers have four partitions, boot/efi, root (/), /var and /home which is encrypted. I no longer have a swap; I had them since 2008 in several computers – but never were they ever used. ‘Partition’ /tmp is now part of tmpfs and set up as so by a line in the /etc/fstab file. In retrospect, the original message – Call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full ?). Check your installation. – was misleading. If my analysis herein is correct a full temporary directory is not the issue. The command lnusertemp, if it is a command, could refer to a UID number; which it could not do for the desktop but could for the laptop. One final comment. I will not be able to do the reinstalments before 26 November. I will report results when done. Regards, Ken Heard

TDE does not open
by Ken Heard 12 Nov '23

12 Nov '23

In mid-October last I installed in a desktop computer Debian Bookworm and TDE. After the installation I was able successfully to transfer the source of the operating system from the CD disk to the built-in source. After opening the OS from the local source I installed an application and was able to use it. I also made some adjustments to the TDE ‘kicker’. I then closed the computer for the night. The next morning I expected to open the computer without difficulty. So I opened it and got as far as the ‘Login to TDE’ window. I entered my password. Instead of opening the TDE I received the following message: Call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full ?). Check your installation. As of this point the only access I had to the computer was by a ‘console login’. Fortunately I had a spare laptop without any operating system installed. I consequently installed on it the same OS and TDE. This time I did not receive the message quoted above. In time I was able to install all the applications I wanted and adjust the kicker and other TDE features to my liking. While I have been using the laptop for several weeks now, I would like to be able to use the desktop. I did however do an online search; all I found were a few posts about this message dated on average ten years ago. A few made reference to the possible absence of KDE files, a diagnosis which I did not think relevant. Others made reference to having the right permissions. Without however complete access to the desktop it was difficult to check permissions of ‘temporary directories’. Directories which appeared to me relevant and where I was able to see the permissions in both computers, all were identical. I cannot understand why what appears to me as identical installations in both computers would not work in both. How can I ‘check the installation’ if access to the computer is so restricted? All help, suggestions, etc. will be gratefully received. ImageMagick import freezes keyboard I/O in opensuse 15.4
by Gianluca Interlandi 01 Nov '23

01 Nov '23

Dear TDE users list, This is a problem probably outside of TDE. I often use ImageMagick import to take a snapshot of part of my screen, such as a particular image. With previous installations, up to openSUSE 15.2 (and TDE), I have always been able to enter something like: import test.ppm and then either use for example Ctrl+F4 or Alt+Tab to switch to a different desktop or window. However, with openSUSE 15.4 (tested with TDE and LXDE) after entering the command for import the keyboard freezes and I cannot switch desktop or window, neither I can exit import by pressing Ctrl+C. The mouse still works and I can still take a screenshot of whatever is on the screen. However, this makes it more combersome to take a screenshot. The interesting thing is that it seems like whatever I type on the keyboard is "queued" and executed once import exits (by drawing a rectangle with the mouse). So eventually it still switches but only after import is done. If anybody has encountered this same problem and has a possible solution, I would be glad to hear.
