.DCOPserver_<HOST>__?, lDCOPserver_<HOST>_:? gone missing
by J Leslie Turriff 15 Sep '22

I've been doing a lot of customizing on my new Devuan machine from the root account. When I tried to switch users to my unprivileged account I was unable to login because of a DCOP: | There was an error setting up inter-process communications for TDE. The message returned by the system was: | | Could not read network connection list. | /home/leslie/.DCOPserver_palomino__1 | | Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running! ps aux|grep -i dcop shows |root 15175 0.0 0.1 49316 10244 ? S 04:42 0:00 dcopserver [tdeinit] --nosid --suicide I also see that root has .DCOPserver_<HOST>__0 and a symlink, .DCOPserver_<HOST>_:0 pointing to it; these are missing in account leslie. Is there a way to recover from this, or do I have to recreate the account? Trouble Installing TDE in Devuan Chimaera
by J Leslie Turriff 14 Sep '22

14 Sep '22

I have acquired a used HP Probook 440 G5, on which I have installed Devuan Chimaera. The Chimaera installer balked at adding | deb http://pkgmaster.devuan.org/merged chimaera-security main contrib non-free | deb-src http://pkgmaster.devuan.org/merged chimaera-security main contrib non-free which continue to fail to work after the install completed; I'm not sure just what they provide and if they are really necessary; I couldn't find any useful information about them in a web search. Perhaps these need to be working before installing Trinity? I followed the install instructions in the Trinity Wiki page <https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Devuan_Trinity_Repository_Installation_Inst…>, but | apt-get update fails with 'E: The repository ... does not have a Release file.' (see attached command output, etc.). Since all of my experience with Linux has been with openSUSE and RedHat, I'm not sure what to do to resolve these issues. Help!? :-) Leslie -- Operating System: Linux Distribution: openSUSE Leap 15.4 x86_64 Desktop Environment: Trinity Qt: 3.5.0 TDE: R14.0.12 tde-config: 1.0

I am using Slackware64 15.0. However, rather than using Slackware's TeX packages, I just install texlive and get it over with. Are you using texlive, or OpenSUSE's TeX packages? And, in either case, if you copy xdvi from a working system and try it out on your system, does it work? You might consider submitting a bug report to the OpenSUSE people (assuming you are using their package, and not texlive). Jim

In a > OpenSUSE 13.2 installation I have for example: > /usr/lib64/ghostscript/9.15/X11.so > Would that be enough? I'd guess not. That library provides gs the ability to output to X11 devices, and (in my tests) it is needed to display .eps images in xdvi, but I speculate you need the ghostscript executable (which is /usr/bin/gs on my system). If you copy that over from your old system to your new system, don't forget it needs to be found before the system one vis-a-vis your $PATH setting. My version of gs has the path name for that directory hard-coded into the executable. (On my system the path name for ghostscript's X11.so library is '/usr/lib64/ghostscript/9.55.0', but on your system that will be something different.) Consequently, if you try copying the gs from your old system to your new one, and they are different versions of gs (which is presumably the case) you will have to create the correctly-named directory on your new system and put the library in that directory. With luck, the old version of gs will play nicely with the (presumably) newer versions of all the libraries on your new system. If it doesn't, you can go deeper down the rabbit hole in a number of ways, but at that point you might want to accept defeat and use okular. (I could suggest some ways to proceed, but I really doubt you will find the spending of the required time productive. Much better to get on with blood clotting research. My vet tells me dog blood clots many times faster than human blood, but I didn't have the presence of mind to ask her if she knew why that is so. Maybe you know.) > I also realized that my subject line should have read "OpenSUSE 15.2", not > 15.3, but that may not be as relevant now. Good Day, anybody expierencing weird behavior of the mouse pointer after a recent update on PSB (preliminary stable builds)? Mine keeps "floating" after a short move in one direction, so it is very hard to hit… It's kinda hard to describe. gvim with GTK3 in OpenSUSE 15.3
by Gianluca Interlandi 07 Sep '22

07 Sep '22

Hi TDE users list! This may be a bit off-topic to TDE but still related to new libraries. I noticed that in OpenSUSE 15.3 gvim is compiled against GTK3. Interestingly, this makes it very slow. At first, when I'm editing a document it works fine, but then after a while it gets so slow that I need to close it and restart it. Has anybody else had the same issue and knows a workaround? An alternative is to install an older version of gvim that was compiled against GTK2 from an older OpenSUSE distribution. Has anybody tried anything similar? It is hard to find an alternative text editor that has instant spell check. Any ideas? I use it mostly for LaTeX. Thanks! Most stable platform to run Trinity on?

TDE Mirrors for Everyone?
by Michael 03 Sep '22

03 Sep '22

Hi All, As most of you know, I donate a mirror to TDE. It costs ~USD100 / year [1]. Mine has ~18 months left, but it’s hard drive isn’t really big enough for what Slávek wants/needs long term. (It’s also completely overkill in terms of memory/cpu.) I recently saw an article about NAT VPSes [2] whose prices are under $10 / year [3]. These, with some tinkering, can be setup to tunnel traffic to a home box (which could be running a VM to act as a TDE mirror). VM’s can be ‘packaged’ such that they are one click imports (at least on Oracle VirtualBox). That would allow Slávek to be able to create it once and then any one of us could install it locally. My graphics skills suckage, but something like: mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org > NAT VPS > Your public IP (from ISP) > [Your router/NAT/'ISP thingy'] > Your home server > VM (on your home server) I’ve used SSH tunnels for 20+ years, but we’d probably need Slávek or someone with more knowledge of traffic tunneling than me, to help with the full setup (as I think iptables is probably a better solution?). # # # Okay, why? 1) I think several of us have existing home hardware that has a spare ~2TB, can run a 1CPU/2GB RAM VM, and runs 24/7 already. 2) At ~$5 per year it’d be a very cheap way for TDE to have multiple mirrors that have the full space available Slávek wants. Thoughts? And a show of hands of people who’d provide a TDE mirror under something like this? Best All, Michael [1] Current offers are roughly 90/yr for VPSes w/ 48GB RAM, 720GB NVMe, 12 vCPU, 24TB transfer (triennial billing). https://www.ssdnodes.com/sale/aug-2022-offers/ [2] https://lowendbox.com/blog/what-the-heck-is-a-nat-vps-anyway/ [3] One offer: $4/year https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/180327/clearance-sale-nat-vps-at-cost-new…

Preserving current layout on keyboard reconnect

Hello all, After switching from traditional USB keyboard to BT one I noticed, that after each reconnect the keyboard layout is reset to hardware default. Meaning I have two layouts -- Polish and Russian -- after a while when not using keyboard, it sleeps (to save power), and on reconnect I have US layout (which is not on the list). For comparison XFCE also does this for a split of second, but then warms up and changes layout to the correct one. Now my system boots to a prompt: login: If I do login, then startx, I get TDE. I've tried "systemctl set-default graphical.target" but no change. I know I can reinstall my backup but I'm sure there's someone here who will point me to the right way to start with the TDE login manager. Note that after removing xfce, at first it *did* boot to TDE login. Then it stopped doing it, and startx boot to... Gnome. I then removed Gnome and ran dpkg-reconfigure, so now startx starts TDE... but I have to login and startx. I'm a bit lost :( Thierry

No image thumbnails when accessing USB device via popup after plugging in
by Leskala 04 Jul '22

04 Jul '22

Hello everyone, when I plug in an USB storage device containing images like an SD card reader, Konqueror doesn't show thumbnails (previews) of image files on that device if I open it via the automatic popup window that is displayed after plugging in the device. There seem to be 3 distinct ways to reach the USB storage ("/dev/sdb1/" in this example) in Konqueror: 1. "system:/media/sdb1" - reached when plugging in an USB device and choosing "Open in New Window" from the popup - (popup configured via "Peripherals" > "Storage Media" in the control center) - image thumbnails do not work! 2. "media:/sdb1" - using the menu "Go" > "Storage Media" in Konqueror - image thumbnails work 3. "/media/<user>/<label>/" - actual path for the internal mountpoint, needs to be manually navigated to - image thumbnails work Number 1 is the problematic one and is the path Konqueror opens from the automatic storage media popup. I always have to resort to manually navigating to one of the other 2 paths in order to get image thumbnails to work, rendering the convenience of the automatic popup useless in cases where images are involved. Is there any way to fix this? Best regards, Leskala

Spell checking issue
by Marvin Jones 02 Jul '22

02 Jul '22

Confused I am. Some of that is probably of my own making. I know I have a mis-spelled word in "a" spellchecker. And, it appears I have both 'standard' spell checkers in play: both `ispell` and `aspell`. `kwrite` seems to be using ispell `nano` seems to be using aspell Well, I've noticed that the spell checker in kwrite is happy with the spelling "everyting". nano is unhappy with the spelling "everyting", as it should be. The only user spellchecker files I can find in $HOME/ are: .aspell.en.pws .aspell.en.prepl There are no .ispell* files in $HOME/ There's no "everyting" in .aspell.en.pws - as confirmed by nano. I can find no other user file in $HOME/ that seems to be related to any spellchecker. But I know I've added 'words' in kwrite -- especially often-used acronyms, Two questions: Where is the user file for ispell's user added words? Can someone point me to a decent HOW-TO to set my system (Ubuntu) to use just _one_ of the spell checkers? Maybe I could clear up my multiple spell checker confusion. Well, I guess I have a third query: Could someone that uses ispell confirm whether or not "everyting" is in ispell's global dictionary? TDE display control messes up colors on RPi with full KMS driver
by Leskala 29 Jun '22

29 Jun '22

Hello everyone, I'm running TDE R14.0.12 on Debian 11 (bullseye) using a Raspberry Pi 2B. With the Debian 11 (bullseye) release of the Raspberry Pi OS, the RPi offers 2 display drivers: "vc4-kms-v3d" (full KMS) and "vc4-fkms-v3d" (fake KMS). Till Debian 10 the fake one was default, now it is the full KMS and the fake KMS driver is supposed to be no longer actively supported (though it can still be switched to). The new default driver (full KMS) poses new issues with the display handling of TDE in terms of color (or gamma) management. As soon as TDE's display management is used, the colors get all weird like the whole screen gets rainbow-colored with very low color depth. Here's a photo I took (it doesn't show up on screenshots): https://i.imgur.com/DIaIP9m.jpeg - using xrandr or TDERandRTray to switch resolutions is fine - using the Trinity control center's "System Administration" > "Monitor & Display" > "Enable global display control" will make colors go crazy as shown in the photo - moving the "Hardware Gamma Control" sliders in the control center will alter the shades of rainbow colors but never fixes the general color distortion - using "xrandr --output HDMI-1 --gamma 1:1:1" will fix colors until reboot - when global display control is enabled, this is persistent and colors will go crazy as soon as TDM starts after bootup I'd like to keep the new (full KMS) driver since the old fkms one always had other issues were KMix's audio volumes would scale between -350% and -400% (yes, negative values) while alsamixer being at 50%, effectively preventing any working volume control in TDE since sliders start at 0. This is fixed with the full KMS driver as it handles the audio devices differently. However, with the new driver I can't make permanent adjustments to screen resolutions with TDE (only temporary with RandR) as I encounter the color bug as described above. Is there anything I can do about it? Should I file a bug somewhere? Best regards, Leskala

Is TDE capable of communicating with apps like Firefox?
by jakolineplayer＠tutanota.com 29 Jun '22

29 Jun '22

Hello, the default file manager for TDE is Konqueror, also Dolphin is available in the repos, is either of them capable of communicating with modern versions of Firefox to do things such as opening folders and selecting (highlight) the downloaded files? Also, as I remember when I used TDE about a year ago, once a foreign file manager is installed (say Caja or pcmanfm) Firefox automatically starts using them to show downloaded files and forgets completely about Konqueror and Dolphin, I know that it's known bug in Firefox, but is there a tested work-around to fix that? Can a TDE user force Firefox to use Konqueror or Dolphin to open files? So my msg contains two questions: 1) Can Firefox communicate with Konqueror or Dolphin to show/highlight my downloaded files and to access my folders? 2) Can I force Firefox to use Konqueror (or Dolphin) as my prefered file manager?

Wallpaper alignment behavior of Konqueror and KDesktop
by Leskala 27 Jun '22

27 Jun '22

Hello everyone, I have 2 issues with the wallpaper setting behavior of Konqueror and KDesktop respectively and possible improvement ideas which I'd like to discuss. 1. Konqueror set-as-wallpaper actions Konqueror offers set-as-wallpaper actions in the right-click menu of images under the "Actions" > "Set as Background" submenu. There are 2 actions in the "Set as Background" category: "Centered" and "Tiled". "Tiled" actually does what its name suggests. However, the "Centered" action does actually lead to "Scaled" in the desktop's wallpaper setting, squishing the image to fit the screen, ignoring the aspect ratio. "Centered" is available in the KDesktop configuration (as in "Configure Desktop..." in the desktop's context menu) but is not correctly triggered by this action. So I guess this is actually a bug: the "Centered" option of "Set as Background" in Konqueror's actions leads to "Scaled" not "Centered" in KDesktop. Also, one could consider replacing "Centered" in Konqueror's wallpaper actions by "Scale & Crop" entirely (see below). (By the way, is there a way to modify those actions via config files or are they part of Konqueror's source code?) 2. KDesktop's default wallpaper alignment setting "Scaled" is a poor choice When changing the wallpaper directly in KDesktops configuration dialog (reached via "Configure Desktop..." in the desktop's context menu), upon selecting a new image, the "Position" setting will revert to "Scaled". This is not necessarily a bug, as KDesktop might just have "Scaled" hardcoded as its default and always reverts to it. However, I think "Scaled" is a poor choice for a default by modern standards since it ignores the image's aspect ratio and squishes any image that doesn't perfectly match the current display's aspect ratio. In my opinion, "Scale & Crop" is a much more sensible option and is the default behavior of most modern desktop environments nowadays, as it doesn't squish any images. I think KDesktop should remember the previous "Position" setting when changing the wallpaper file in its dialog and/or the default should be changed to "Scale & Crop", which would fit most situations just fine. Best regards, Leskala

Hi all! In continuation of this thread https://mail.trinitydesktop.org/mailman3/hyperkitty/list/users@trinitydeskt… I was just hit by the same problem, but it affected a sd-card in T470 internal card reader. To overcome the problem I need this one-line udev rule to make all "invisible" aka disks only seen in system:/media/ to be seen by the tde aoutomounter again: # /etc/udev/rules.d/99-disk.rules ENV{ID_TYPE}="disk", ENV{UDISKS_AUTO}="1", ENV{UDISKS_SYSTEM}="0", ENV{UDISKS_SYSTEM_INTERNAL}="0" So, no more matching of specific vendor names etc. Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

video sound (mysteriously) working again ?!?! maybe OT
by William Morder 18 Jun '22

18 Jun '22

Okay, this may or may not be off-topic, don't have a clue whether it was really a TDE problem, or a system issue, or that another desktop (xfce) was interfering with Trinity. Or it could be my own dumb blind luck that things seem normal again. [fingers crossed] The original thread, for anybody who wishes to be reminded, followed from this heading:"video sound not working", started on 6 May 2022. The thing is, I don't think that I did anything which ought to have affected EVERYTHING in this manner. The story is longer than I tell here, but I will give what I guess to be the main points. I got a couple new audio mixing and recording toys in the past few months. I have had a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 audio interface maybe two months ago, and played round with that. Typically, when I have clicked to monitor my instrument sound, no other sound will work simultaneously with my system. Either I choose to listen to my instrument play through the speakers (or through the Scarlett interface using headphones), or I can listen to online radio (using qmmp), or I can listen to my music files (using audacious), or I can watch a video (for which I was using vlc). I could not play music on audacious, for example, and play along on my instrument through the Scarlett interface. If anybody recalls, the sound on smplayer had stopped working for me altogether, and nothing seemed to change it. (All other video programs, except kaffeine-trinity, also stopped playing sound.) Now I have got two new items for the family: (1) a Vox MV50 AC 50-watt Hybrid Tube Head (which I generally use as a pre-amp), running through a 50w Cube Street EX amp; and (2) a Vox StompLab IIG Modeling Effects Pedal, which I put in front of the pre-amp, so that I can get a range of effects, mainly old-school tube-amp type effects. (The pre-amp is actually a mini-tube amp, for anybody who cares, and who wants to do something similar. It is a 50w mini-amp, which can be used directly with headphones or for recording, or can be used as a pre-amp; or, if I play out in a club, can be plugged directly into the house sound system, or into the sound board, so that they don't have to bother round with trying to mike my amp. Saves a lot of bother, and instead of lugging round a big amp, this is about the h/w dimensions of the average smartphone nowadays, only 2x or 3x the thickness, or depth.) I played round with these things last night, but didn't make any changes to my system while doing it. Later that night, I returned to vlc, which I haven't touched for a couple weeks because it started giving me problems. At first, it would not stay on top of the display, then it wouldn't load at all. And as for smplayer, it hasn't worked at all, and I haven't touched it since that thread mentioned above. Sound was working for vlc, but for none of my other video programs; like smplayer, they would play only video, if they played at all, but no sound. Now vlc wasn't working, and that wouldn't do. So I went into my settings, nothing seemed different, then I got into my config files, specifically in /home/<USER>/.config/vlc. It looked like last changes were recent, though I didn't recall making changes. So I renamed this vlc config folder, saved it, and then replaced it with an older copy of the same that I had saved from my previous system (my old desktop, which is now in storage). Simple as that, presto! everything works. Not only does vlc work, sound and all, but so does smplayer and other video players. Moreover, my Scarlett audio interface, which before would take over the sound system, now will play nicely along side other audio and video programs, though I can't figure out why. This makes it nice for playing music on, say, audacious, or online radio on qmmp, or even to play music videos, and then using the Scarlett interface either to play over headphones or to play over my amp, so that I can play along with the music, whatever randomly comes up, in my practice. Apologies for length, but I wanted to be sure to include all the details, just in case. The salient points are: I added new devices, but these shouldn't have affected my sound system, as nothing was changed. I replaced the config folder for vlc, and I could see how that ought to make a difference for vlc; but now smplayer also works just fine, though nothing was changed. And last, I can play different audio programs (or the sound on video programs) simultaneously, if I wish, while using my recording hardware. None of this makes sense to me. I am glad it's working, but sometimes I also like to know why, rather than thanking the Goddess and crossing my fingers in hopes that the same problems don't return. Anybody have a clue what happened, and why? Bill

Registering Twin?
by Maciej Pilichowski 16 Jun '22

16 Jun '22

Hello everyone :-), Naive question, but how can I register TWin? I have openSUSE Leap 15.3 with default XFCE installed. Now I installed TWin (from Trinity repo), all good, but when I logout from XFCE and try to select another window manager I only see XFCE and IceWM as WM options. Nothing more. So how to add Twin as well, so I would see 3 options for selection? Thank you in advance for help. Cheers, -- http://przypadkopis.wordpress.com/

tde and dependency hell
by gene heskett 13 Jun '22

13 Jun '22

Hi all; I'm about done with debian-11, security is 2/3rds of the typing I am doing. So tell me please what desktop to install, that will not clash, but will be over rode in apt or synaptic, long enough to get trinity installed. I've tried, something like 29 times so far to get an install that works without automatically installing brltty and orca because it thinks I'm blind. The secret there is unplug any serial adaptors from the usb tree before doing the install. But every time I do a new install, it uses a different UUID someplace that screws up a working install on a separate drive. So I'm going to strip my usb tree down to bare bones and do the 30th install. but I want to know what desktop I can install, that will let me put tde on later w/o a broken package dependency hell resulting. Thanks for any encouragement. Cheers, Gene Heskett

This is 100% repeatable on 2 different PCs, one using AMD GPU, the other NVidia GPU, both with only FOSS drivers. touchpad, tapping
by Greg Madden 11 Jun '22

I have a new Lenovo Legion 5. Lots of new configuring. AFAIK, TDE does not offer touchpad configuration. Basic scroll, left and right clicks work. I want to enable more functions for the touchpad, particularly tapping. libinput "input device management and event handling library" handles this. My mistake; apparently I had recently set environment variables http_proxy and https_proxy to 127.0.0.1:8118. (Why? I dunno.) Clearing them fixed the problem. After installing Leap 15.4, zypper and YaST can't see repositories.
by J Leslie Turriff 11 Jun '22

11 Jun '22

Hello, I sent this message to the openSUSE support list, but I'm sending it here as well, because it appears that TDE Proxy settings might also be involved. In KControlCenter => Internet & Network => Proxy, I had at some time set up Manual Proxy Configuration (see snapshot); even though Proxy is set to Connect to the Internet directly, Trinity seems to be using that manual configuration? Also, when I try to clear the IP address and port fields in the Manual Proxy Configuration window, it complains that 'the settings are invalid', so I can't get rid of them. Leslie ------------------------------- I have been having trouble getting zypper and YaST to see the openSUSE repositories from Leap 15.3, and now after installing Leap 15.4 into newly formatted partitions as well. I'm getting a message that tells me that they are trying to communicate with privoxy, which uses port 8118: | ~ | ● zypper ref | Retrieving repository 'Update Repository (Non-Oss)' metadata .................................................................................................... Using DigiKam with a Samsung Tablet
by J Leslie Turriff 10 Jun '22

Hi, Does anyone here know how to use DigiKam to download images from a Samsung tablet? After plugging the tablet in via USB cable, the removable media tool pops up with two options: Open in New Window, and Open DigiKam. Selecting Open in New Window does nothing; when DigiKam is selected, I get its main window, but no files are displayed, and there seems to be no way to navigate the tablets file system. Suggestions are welcome. Leslie -- Operating System: Linux Distribution: openSUSE Leap 15.3 x86_64 Desktop Environment: Trinity Qt: 3.5.0 TDE: R14.0.12 tde-config: 1.0

Markdown syntax for kate
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 09 Jun '22

09 Jun '22

Hi all! I just found a working syntax highlighting of markdown files for kate. Original comes from https://github.com/claes/kate-markdown , I just added the fileextension *.mdwn for ikiwiki. To try it out: decompress the attached markdown.xml.xz and copy it to /opt/trinity/share/apps/katepart/syntax/ , then restart kate and open an arbitrary markdown file (github readme.md ...) If this works for otheres, too, I'd suggest to add the file to TDE :) Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

The 26th debian 11-3 install is about to take place
by gene heskett 08 Jun '22

08 Jun '22

Between blltty, orca and the new kde, I'm admitting defeat. if I do a grfx install at all, what can I use thats compatible with tde, so I can install it without using some of Alfreds finest dynamite to demolish whats there and actually install tde. For that I'll need a trinity.list file for debians /etc/apt/sources.d directory too. The last time I tried this, in late october of 2021 the first tde package created a dependency hell that would have torn the system down, needing yet another install to fix. I'm not kidding, the dependencies would have removed libc6 and all its helpers. So the first question is how do I install tde to debian-11-3? Thank you. [OT] Need help installing Ubuntu on an EFI (not UEFI) machine
by J Leslie Turriff 03 Jun '22

03 Jun '22

Hi, I've been using an EFI (not UEFI) system for years to run OpenSuSE Linux (since I have no Windoze on my machine I saw no reason to fool with UEFI, which had teething problems when I got my motherboard). Now I'm trying to install Ubuntu 20 LTS on a separate drive, but the installer is complaining about EFI and boot partitions. I've searched for help, but all I get is UEFI stuff. I don't want to reset my BIOS because then I wouldn't be able to boot back to my old system if I have problems with Ubuntu. Is anyone here interested in giving me a helping hand? Camera mounts as Unknown Device
by Thierry de Coulon 31 May '22

31 May '22

I 'm not sure if this is rather a linux or a TDE question. I've got a new Canon Camera. When I connect it to my PC with an USB cable, it is mounted as mass storage (wich is very good). It has two SD cards that appear as two directories in a Konqueror window. So far so good. However, this window says "system:/media/Unknown Device 1-12:1.0" and it is nowhere to be found, not in /media/<user>, not in /mnt, mount also gives me nothing (or I don't know what to look for). So I can't unmount it, I have to turn the camera off. I don't think it's a real problem as the SD cards are exfat formated and I check that nothing's being read/writen, but I'd prefer to unmount. If the system can mount this "Unknown Device 1-12:1.0", it must be somewhere, no? I'm not looking for a way to open the camera in Digikam or so. Coying the files with Konqueror is just what I want, but I'd like a way to know the mounting point. I got the USB IDs so I was thinking of writing some udev rule. lsusb returns Bus 001 Device 012: ID 04a9:32f5 Canon, Inc. but there is no 012 or 12 in /dev/bus/usb...

how to use Kmail with the new Google monster?
by William Morder 25 May '22

25 May '22

Gmail is changing, yet again, so that we cannot use third-party apps. In the past, I have had problems using Kmail with Google stuff, but I changed my account settings to accept "less secure" apps, third-party apps, whatever, and then it was okay again. I finally got round to my Gmail account. I don't really use it much, as I hate Google, but it has been useful to have a Gmail account for some things. I wanted to go into my account and make whatever changes were necessary to make it work, but now I find that I cannot even load Gmail's login pages, account management pages, etc. I can only load help pages and the like. This is true (so far) for every browser I have tried. I have tried enabling all cookies, turning off private browsing, etc.; but my attempts to connect are treated as though I am behind a proxy even when I'm not, or that I am a bot, or something like that. I only use Gmail for "business", by which I mean stuff like shopping, for places like Best Buy and Tiger Direct; since I know that I will get tracked to death there anyway. I have been trying to track down all my important business that uses Gmail, to change them to my Zoho email account, until I can figure out some better, more permanent solution; but I can't even remember all that stuff for which I once put down Gmail as my email address, and haven't thought about it again in a few years. Is there any way to configure Kmail to work with Gmail (i.e., using 2FA or OAuth2, etc.) without having to get into Gmail itself? because, you see, I can't even login on a Gmail page, much less get into my account. And yet, until at least the end of this month, I can still receive Gmail. I imagine some others out there in the TDE universe must also have to confront this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bill

video sound not working
by William Morder 14 May '22

14 May '22

Not sure if this is a strictly TDE problem or not, but I did spend some time trying to restart or reconfigure the sound system. (TCC / Sound & Multimedia / Sound System) When I first got this machine, I did have some problems getting it to work without pulseaudio, as I prefer alsa. Since then, it has been a battle of unseen forces, with pulseaudio and alsa apparently competing for control of my sound. The thing is, music files play just fine (using audacious); online radio usually plays just fine (using qmmp), although I sometimes have to go into settings and enable pulseaudio. (It will buffer up, then the stream dies.) But usually this is just a bit of playing round, then it works. My videos are a constant headache, though. I don't watch them much, but when I do sometimes want to watch something, suddenly I don't have sound, and it doesn't seem to matter what I use, pulseaudio or alsa. Also, when I had similar problems before, it only took some configuration, then it worked again, and I never gave it a thought after that. This problem keeps popping up, with no apparent rhyme or reason to it. My videos won't play sound. Doesn't matter if I use smplayer or vlc (which are my two main programs for videos). It used to be that some videos would only play on vlc, some on smplayer. Other programs were also hit-and-miss. Now no videos will play sound, on any program. I've also tried nearly every other program available for videos. I've downloaded all codecs that seem to be required. (I save downloaded packages, and use dpkg to install, then just upgrade periodically; so I know what I used before in my working configuration.) I've done this time and again, in previous installations, and usually no problems after getting everything set up. With this new laptop, the sound in the videos disappears sometimes with every new reboot. The only major change in my system is that I bought a new toy; a Focusrite interface to attach musical instruments (guitars, keyboards, microphones, etc.) to my laptop via a USB interface. (I used to have a line-in jack in my old desktop, so I just plugged in via a headphone amplifier.) It took some messing round, but I got this device working, so I can play through my speakers, or record to the machine using audacity. Sometimes I have to make changes to make sure that audacity isn't claiming the sound system. However, I have shut off everything else that could interfere. No active music files, the Focusrite audio interface is shut off, etc., etc. And still, I have no sound in any of my videos; doesn't matter what format, doesn't matter what program I use. I would guess that it is a TDE problem, since I booted into xfce, and the sound works fine in that desktop. However, I don't like to spend time there, and don't want to use it except for testing. Anybody have a clue about what is wrong? As I said, it is all rather hit-and-miss. Sometimes the sound works, sometimes not. My installation and programs installed or used, etc., have remained the same since December 2021. I've been running the same programs on other machines for at least 15 years now, so I like to think that I know how to track down and resolve most issues, but this one just keeps returning. Sorry for the length, but I wanted to include all possible details that could be relevant. Please feel free to trim in the responses. Any help will be appreciated. Bill

message bus - connection refused - WTF?
by William Morder 07 May '22

07 May '22

This issue just started, seemingly out of the blue. My system has been running just fine, and I haven't made any changes or installed anything new or upgraded in a long time. The first signs I had were earlier this evening, when suddenly one of my external hard drives was not recognized. When I tried mounting and unmounting, everything seemed very slow; still couldn't get it to recognize that external hard drive. Finally I unmounted everything, then tried just that hard drive, and it mounted normally. When I tried to open it, however, Konqueror started acting really weird, and a window opened but nothing was displayed. At last I decided to reinstall my system, but after booting up again, nothing has changed in this behavior. I did finally get a message window (not in TDE style, but rather in XFCE or Gnome or whatever) saying something like "message bus could not connect, connection refused - but why all of a sudden? Everything has been running great. It occurs to me that somebody on the mailing list mentioned that Konqueror was acting a little weird, and I wondered if this could be related. I am running Devuan Chimaera (= Debian Bullseye) and currently using the TDE stable repositories. Any help would be appreciated. Bill

Saving Konqueror sidebar item positions
by Hunter Ellett 04 May '22

04 May '22

Hello users and congrats to the team for the R14.0.12 release, Does anyone here also happen to use "Multiple Views" for the Navigation Panel (the sidebar) of Konqueror? For example, I like to have the metabar, root folder, and home folder ones open. However, even after saving the profile with these laid out the way I like they arrange themselves based on where the sidebar tab for that item is. The home folder one takes up 90% of the space while the metabar and root folder are scrunched at the very bottom which make them nearly useless. It seems that Konqueror only saves which ones are open, and not where you placed which one and what size they should be. Is saving this even a feature, and if so how could it be accomplished? Thanks. -- ~ Hunter

TDE R14.0.12 released, new target R14.0.13 started...
by Slávek Banko 04 May '22

04 May '22

Hi all, after R14.0.12 was released, the window for the development of R14.0.13 has already been opened. The first pull-requests have already been merged, the first builds of the packages was launched. If you used the Preliminary Stable Builds repository only temporarily, and you prefer to stick on the official final release, it is now the best time to switch to the official repository. The packages in both repositories will be identical for some time, so it is smooth to change the apt source if you want. Otherwise, we will be very happy if you help us in testing the upcoming release. Along with the release of R14.0.12, the building of packages for Ubuntu 20.10.x (Groovy) will be stopped. So the upcoming R14.0.13 will no longer be available for this distributions - the packages will not be available in the PSB repository. If you are still using this distributions, you should consider upgrading to a newer version. Publishing the first R14.0.13 preliminary packages I suppose on 8 May. Thank you for your support! Cheers -- Slávek

How do you submit a bug?

I wanted to file (and hopefully fix) the bug with Konqueror’s docs I just mentioned. Went to https://www.trinitydesktop.org/ , clicked ‘Bugs.’ Was redirected to mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org , created an account. Signed in. Loads a page that looks like some settings page, click ‘Issues’ does nothing, can’t see any TDE issues. Clicked the ‘Home’ icon (which is a green tea cup? Kinda wtf?) Shows a page with ‘Repositories 0’ so... How does one use this? Can one use this? Also, tried: https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/cgit/?q=Konq https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/cgit/?q=Konsole https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/cgit/?q=konsole All return: “No repositories found” Are there instructions somewhere? Would somebody please, kindly, create a link to them from whatever that Dashboard thing is that you first sign into? Stupid user I am not, but this is a bit much... Dazed and Confused, Michael

Konqueror: Externally get locations?
by Michael 03 May '22

03 May '22

Hi All, Goal: Run a {script} to capture all open Konqueror {data} such that running a second {script} will restore all the prior Konqueror sessions/windows. (In the desktop the script was run from, although capturing all desktops wouldn’t necessarily be bad.) Question: Is there some way to externally get all the locations from all the open Konqueror sessions/windows on a specific desktop? Just want to know if it’s doable and if it is, a pointer to which tool to use. Bonus question: It looks like you can call Konq w/ an explicit window size (and position?)? --geometry <geometry> sets the client geometry of the main widget Anyway to grab that externally too? Or? Maybe a way to export and save temporary profiles? Whatever method works :) Thanks, Michael PS: This should probably be removed from the Trinity Konqueror Handbook. Kpdf annoyance
by phiebie＠drei.at 28 Apr '22

28 Apr '22

Hi, Whenever I call kpdf to view a pdf-document, it starts as a "small" ribbon of approximately 240x1100 pixels on the top of the desktop. Of course this window can be elongated via mouse actions. Tedious. I altered the kpdf.desktop-file to execute "/opt/trinity/bin/kpdf --geometry 950x1170 --caption "%c"" and now the window is expanded to my liking. But when Slavek releases an alteration to the kpdf package - quite often the case - my .desktop gets overwritten and I get again the ribbon. And must again correct the .desktop-file. Pita. Is there a method to keep this file in "my" state and not overwrite it blindely? The "i" flag is not a viable solution. Rgds. Peter.

Lost TDE Display Manager and other TDE issues after upgrade to Debian 11
by Edward 27 Apr '22

27 Apr '22

After upgrading to Debian 11 on both of my two systems, upon reboot, I lost the TDE Display Manager. The login screen defaults to whatever Debian itself uses and I have been unsuccessful getting the TDE login manager back. > ~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity > tdm.service is a disabled or a static unit, not starting it. Also...during the upgrade, one of the packages it wanted to remove was binutils, which it did. It left a package binutils-common installed, but not upgraded. If I attempted to remove binutils-common, it also wanted to remove numerous Trinity packages. Is there a fix for these issues?? -- Linux. A Continual Learning Experience. Running a shell script from KMenu
by dep 23 Apr '22

23 Apr '22

Greets, everybody . . . I probably knew how to do this back in the second Bush administration, but I'm confounded by it now. My hope is to add to my KMenu an application -- it's gui and runs on my system -- that is started by a shell script. What I don't know is what to put in the command field in KMenu's entry for the item. In case it matters, the script is /opt/dvda-author/dvda-author-gui.sh and this is it: #!/bin/bash export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/dvda-author cd /opt/dvda-author /opt/dvda-author/dvda-author-gui cd - unset $LD_LIBRARY_PATH So. Anybody know what I ought to put in the DVD-Author command box in KMenu? DVD-Author appears to be the only foss application for making audio DVDs. Mass edit Menu entries?
by Michael 15 Apr '22

15 Apr '22

Hi All, Anyone know how to mass edit all entries in a sub-menu? I’d like to change all of the entries in the Internet sub-menu by adding a ‘nice’ to the beginning of each launch command. Example: firefox %u -to- nice -n 5 firefox %u I’ll want to do most of the other sub-menus, so it’s not just specific to the Internet sub-menu. Also, would these be overwritten by anything (e.g. is there a sticky bit I’d need to set somewhere else?)? Thanks, Michael

Android emulator for Linux? [offtopic]
by Michael 08 Apr '22

08 Apr '22

Hi All, Does anyone use an android emulator on Linux that will successfully run current .apks? Background: I just tried Anbox, but it’s apparently been abandoned (2018) and no longer will install new(ish) .apks due to native library problems. Android-x86 and BlissOS just hang in VMs. Shashlik, ARChon, Andro VM, Jar of Beans, and AndyOS are (basically) dead/abandoned. If it will natively install .xapk files that would be a plus? IDK, that could just be one site’s marketing scheme to lock you into their service? Anyway, if you use an android emulator on Linux (preferably in a VM) can you tell me how well it works, and what’s needed to get it to run a current day .apk? Thanks!, Michael

kpdf does nt see my printer
by Thierry de Coulon 28 Mar '22

28 Mar '22

I usually use networked, Postscript printers (mostly second hand professionnal HP laserjets). I recently decided to bring back into service an Epson ET-2550 inkjet that had been purchased for photo printing and actually was just gathering dust. I've installed it on USB with Cups - no problem, test-page printing, the printer appears in Libre-Office (and lots of other programs). Now the thing I don't understand: I can't see the printer from kpdf! It's there in kedit, it's there in kate... It does not appear in kpdf. The laserprinters do show in kpdf. It's not really important - I won't be using this printer really. But I just can't fin a logical explanation. Thierry

non-starting browsers & other annoyances
by William Morder 05 Mar '22

05 Mar '22

Update on those previous threads, for what it's worth. After pondering my options (upgrade or downgrade, try another DE, start from scratch, etc.), I decided that I would give this thing one last try. And here, I did not do anything different, so far as I can tell. During my futzing and fiddling phase, I changed the repos to PSB and PTB, but this didn't seem to help, as Kmail would always crash, and it didn't solve the problem with browsers not starting, nor did it get Open Office working. So I decided to give it one last try, and went through adding packages only a few at a time, downloading them all from standard repositories for Devuan Chimaera and TDE (no PSB or PTB). My usual practice is the download in batches, according to categories, if you will. I keep lists of those packages and dependencies that have worked in the past. Where there are problems or conflicts, I make a note, edit out those rejects, etc. Most of you probably have some similar habits, I suppose, but this is mine, and I've been doing it like this since 2006, across PC Linux, Kubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04x, Debian 8 or 9, and finally Devuan starting with Jessie. I've copied and saved my home folder across 3 desktops (plus a few test machines built out of junk), and at least 5 laptops. There may be a few other machines that I now forget. But anyway, so this isn't my first rodeo. What I do works for me; or at least, it always has done. After adding these packages only a few at a time, suddenly everything works again. The only thing I can see that is different is that these are slightly newer versions of the stable builds. I have not yet added qt5ct (which will allow me to use my TDE colors and themes on non-TDE programs). There are several threads on this already; so I will leave it at that. My browsers work again like usual, everything is back. So that's all good, right? Except, what bothers me is that I can't track down the cause of those problems. I can only think maybe it was due to some corrupt packages, or something like that, which makes me wonder how and why they would have got damaged. It could be that qt5ct and/or its dependencies are causing some conflict. On my previous installations, when I ran the echo command to enable qt5ct changes, I got error messages that said it was misconfigured as gtk2. Yet that is what this web page advises: https://askubuntu.com/questions/706528/qt-apps-stopped-inheriting-gtk-theme… https://web.archive.org/web/20201111174652/https://askubuntu.com/questions/… Then you run this command: sudo sh -c "echo 'export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=gtk2' >> /etc/environment" and reboot, and it always worked (at least, when I was running Devuan Beowulf on my desktop). The error message in qt5ct said that it ought to be something else, I think it was qt5 or maybe gtk5 (is that a thing?). So I tried modifying the command to: sudo sh -c "echo 'export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt5ct' >> /etc/environment" but this did nothing. I hesitate to mess with this any more, since my system is stable again. Anyway ... so once more, I stand at the door, almost there, but can't get in. Now I am back to the same problem that irked me before; namely, either to get Open Office running, or to get Libre Office running and to change the color scheme of the GUI interface to something that doesn't cause me severe pain and discomfort (from looking at large patches white screen). I am wondering if I ought to try css, as I believe I still have E. Liddell's scripts somewhere (and his old emails with the attachments). Maybe I can use that to get my Libre Office GUI interface to use colors that are not so hard on my eyes. (I am not joking here. I get watery eyes, and eventually a migraine, after staring at a white screen for more than about 5 minutes.) Apologies for length, but I was trying to recount the various factors that may or not be relevant. I expect it will get trimmed in the responses. Any observations or suggestions or advice are appreciated. Bill

One more try... On Fri, Feb 25, 2022 at 14:22 (-0800), William Morder via tde-users wrote: > Now all of a sudden this issue, with almost none of my usual browsers able to > start up at all: it's blind-sided me, and I don't even know where to look for > the cause. I'm still curious as to what exactly that means. If you open a terminal window and try to start (for example) firefox, by typing firefox to the shell prompt and pressing the enter key, *exactly* what happens? Saying "doesn't start" is vague to the point of meaninglessness. (Or opera or vivaldi or whatever browser you like.) Does the shell say something like "command not found"? Does the shell report the browser crashed? Do you get a prompt back, but no window shows up on your screen? Do you not get a prompt back? Are there absolutely no error messages or similar that show up in your terminal window? Note that unless you have a very long window, a process that isn't using much CPU time might be far enough down the list that you won't see it with top or htop. If you really want to know whether it is there, open a second terminal window and try typing the command ps axuw | grep firefox (or grep for whatever browser you tried to start that "isn't starting") and let us know what it says. Trinity on Slackware
by Hunter Ellett 28 Feb '22

28 Feb '22

Slackware 15 just dropped yesterday after a 6 year gap and I'm wondering if anyone here uses it knows how well supported it is. I know two folks on Matrix who do, but the way they talk the Slackbuilds by Ray-V are rather shallow. I'm thinking of using Slackware myself because of its incredible resistance to change (much like TDE) But, if Trinity is not well supported I don't know how it will go. I don't care for any of the desktop environments or window managers that come with it. For me it's either TDE, icewm, or nothing. -- ~ Hunter Sent from my Android device with K9 Mail

strange visitors on top
by William Morder 27 Feb '22

27 Feb '22

Does anybody know what these processes represent? applet.py agent at-spi-bus-laun They show up in top, running as processes under my user name, PIDs are all close together in the 2600 range, but they are new visitors that I've never seen before. I've tried to track them down to their source, so far with no luck. I've had some other issues, too, but I don't know if they are related. Just getting used to running TDE on a different and newer machine, so I expect that things will change and I need to make adjustments. But I can't imagine what I might have installed that does this. These processes all run at near 100% CPU, although I don't really have much else running at present. In any case, since I haven't seen them ever before yesterday, I want to know. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Bill

Let the war end, off vs. on topic
by Michael 26 Feb '22

26 Feb '22

I find high irony that my namesake on this list has diametrically opposed views to myself as to how the users on this list should behave. Although I’m not fond of fascism in any form, lets force some middle ground anyway. (Again, the irony is strong...) Some background and realities first though. 1) This list has always had a huge amount of “off topic” correspondence. It is what makes this list enjoyable to many (possibly most) of the members. 2) Everyone on this list uses an email program that allows message filtering to enable their off vs. on topic desires. So, being the fascist I don’t like being, if you wish to create, or reply with, an “off topic” message to this list, please include, at the end of the subject line the completely disambiguous filterable keyword: [offtopic] The END. (Not that “The END” will stop any of you from expressing your opinions one way or the other, so do remember to change your reply’s subject line to: “Let the war end, off vs. on topic [offtopic]”) Best Regards All, (yes even to Mike) Michael

non-starting browsers
by William Morder 26 Feb '22

26 Feb '22

Now here's another puzzle. I don't know if it's related to my previous question about unwanted visitors in top, but I decided that I ought to start a new thread. I managed to get rid of those pesky unwelcome visitors, and imagined that I was on the way to having a machine that actually does what I want. All of a sudden, most of my browsers will not launch at all. I even went on a spree, and downloaded lots of different browsers, just to try them out (and to see if I could get anything to connect to the Internet). Thus far I have installed urf, surf-raw, netsurf, netsurf-gtk, midori, epiphany chromium, icecat, links2, lynx, elinks, vivaldi-snapshot, seamonkey and palemoon. Firefox is of course already installed by default. My regular browsers are icecat (to block everything that's unwanted) and palemoon (for when I am blocked from sites such as archive.org, etc.). I also use seamonkey for only one thing, which is a small blog that I don't really maintain much any more, but still like to check in. And I generally use vivaldi-snapshot for all my "business"-type stuff, where I must use a direct connection. Until now, this system worked just fine, both on my desktop computer and (since early December) on this laptop. Now, suddenly, only palemoon will load at all, and I am blocked from archive.org. The only thing that I have changed is to remove non-free and contrib from the lines in my sources.list, since networking has worked fine without any non-free software. And by the way, this is not, strictly speaking, off-topic, because it probably concerns tdenetworkmanager, or something like that. Everything else that I've tested, so far, works okay. I can connect to the internet, I can send and receive emails, I can download stuff. When I check top, these browsers don't even seem to load. It's not like they start loading then crash; they don't even show up on top. I am about to try an upgrade. And if that doesn't work, to add non-free and contrib to my sources ... but I would really rather not do that, since it seems like it ought to work without them. Help, please! Any suggestions are welcome. Even snide comments and jokes would be a relief. Bill

Removable media URL mismatch
by Curt Howland 22 Feb '22

22 Feb '22

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 Hi. Forgive me if this is an old issue. I noticed recently trying to launch VLC to play a file on removable media from Konqueror, the file path passed to VLC is messed up. Should be: file:///media/user/sdb1/filename.mp3 Is: file:///home/user/system%3/media/user/sdb1/filename.mp3 The file association has "/bin/vlc --start-from-file %U", I looked at some other file associations and %U appears to be correct. TDE applications do not have this problem, kedit or kpdf just show "system:/media/user/sdb1/filename.xxx" and I checked, those use %U in file associations. Any ideas? how to force TDE colors in LibreOffice and other applications?
by William Morder 21 Feb '22

21 Feb '22

I know, I know ... Use qt5ct. And I'm the one who complains when others bring up this same problem under different headings: GTK 3 TQt Engine Styles Using Tqt theme/color scheme in Qt5 applications The problem is not with display of text, etc.; in fact, it would seem that the issue with page metrics differing between Open Office and Libre Office has been resolved, or is not so obvious. So it may be that I can make it work, at least for the present. What I want is to change the GUI of Libre Office to use my TDE system colors and fonts. I could do it with Open Office, but not with Libre Office, which appears to use Gnome defaults. I've tried to go into Trinity Control Center, but changing the settings does nothing to Libre Office. This isn't just a cosmetic annoyance (although it *is* ugly), but because it's really hard on my old eyes to stare for hours on end at a white background with tiny black text. It only takes a few minutes and my eyes start to give me problems, and I can't continue working. It seems that there must be a way to force Libre Office to use my TDE colors, or at least to use a dark theme or high-contrast mode. I tried qt5ct, and nothing happens. I thought maybe I could do it with css or something like that. Any help or suggestions? Bill
