It is indeed a reimagining of Tristian, based on the original mascot concept you proposed back in 2021.

I have been experimenting with a new visual interpretation of the character while keeping the connection with the original concept and with TDE. So credit where credit is due: the original Tristian concept is yours; this is my reinterpretation of it. :)

I also remembered Tristan exactly, and just as I really liked the original design, I really like this updated version. Very nicely done. That made my day better. Thank you!

I liked the name Tristian from the very beginning. When Philip first designed the graphic, I thought it needed "a little tweaking", and this update from Sebastião has done exactly that.

I like dragons and I'm not saying we have to replace them everywhere. I also like polar bears. And the polar bear gives us the opportunity to have a mascot, which allows us to have our own face, which prevents confusion with the dragons in KDE.

Following the discussion here, I have created a pull request in TDE/tdeartwork:

PR #66 — [Proposal] Tristian artwork for discussion

I included the wallpaper together with the related Tristian artwork and some of the visual ideas I have been experimenting with.

The intention is not to assume that the whole set should be adopted or to replace anything immediately. I simply wanted to put the material in a concrete place where it can be reviewed and discussed, and then the project can decide what, if anything, would be useful to keep.

If there is interest in particular parts, I can of course adjust, reorganize or split them into smaller PRs as appropriate.

And thanks again for the feedback on Tristian. It is particularly nice to see that the connection with the original 2021 concept is still recognizable.

My only question is: Tristan is usual in English (and most other languages that I can find). There are also Tristam, Tristin, etc., but other spellings are much less common.

The real reason behind the naming is that it starts with 'Tri-' (for Trinity) and I'm not really good at giving names to things. :-)

I didn't know Tristan, Tristam etc. were actually existing names, so I took some name ending in -ian (I don't remember which one though) and replaced the beginning with Tri-.

This is something new, sets TDE apart, and for us to move forward, it is good to have a new image.

I'm glad that someone actually remembered this old proposed mascot and that there seems to be renewed interest in selecting a new mascot, but the only sure thing is that Tristian is more of a concept which would need to be refined than a ready proposal (and that today I might have done some things differently :-).

"Trina" is not good for german speakers :) "Tristan" as a name is not very common but is OK - think of "Tristan and Isolde".

"Trix" was previously used as the name of one of the two mascots of UEFA 2008.

It's also short and simple, like Linux "Tux".

I suppose naming an international mascot is harder than it looks.

The links on wikipedia and wiktionary mention the curious etymology of the name, which combines an Welsh root, *drust*, meaning "noise", "tumult", with Welsh/Cornish/Breton *trist*, meaning sad, whence we get the meaning of sad in modern Romance languages, French, Portuguese, etc.

Nothing excites me like an excursion into etymology (seriously!) ... however, I doubt future users of TDE will dig the name, nor will they dig into its etymology.

I don't much care for the notion of a "sad" mascot, but it may be that he is sad because so few people know about the Trinity desktop, compared to some others out there, or sad because we can't get TDE into the official repositories for Debian, Devuan, Ubuntu, etc. Or he could be sad because most of the installation images (with TDE) do not work so well. (At least, that is my experience.)

In any case, I noticed that, but it's just a name.

I do think that it would be best to find a name that is equally male and female. Otherwise, we forget that roughly half of all living things are female, including human users of the Trinity desktop.

Most important, I believe, is to stay with the *Tri-* stem for Trinity. The rest can be negotiated, but we ought to think like poets rather than as advertising and marketing people.

I had actually thought of something like Trickster, which is not really a name, but a kind of title. But then I had second thoughts: not really catchy enough; maybe sounds a little too academic, whatever.

Perhaps Trix-something? (Trixter doesn't quite make it, though.)

After all, we can create our own new name. We don't have to be bound to the past, names that already exist.

It keeps the "Tri-" connection to Trinity, has only two syllables, and sounds more like a mascot name than a person's name. Interestingly, "trilo" is also a real Portuguese word for a trill or warbling sound, so at least in Portuguese it has a rather pleasant accidental meaning. :-)

And speaking of presenting TDE, I have been working on a TDE-focused LiveCD intended to showcase TDE as a complete, ready-to-use desktop environment.

The image is already working well, and I am currently using it for a longer period to make sure everything remains solid in day-to-day use. Once I am satisfied with that, I intend to present it to the project and ask whether it could be added to the LiveCDs listed on the TDE website.

As for the mascot, I think "Trilo" is definitely worth adding to the list. :-)

My 2 cents on the topic: - avoid names already used for other things (like Trix, though it sounds good) - we can't please everyone, especially considering we have a multicultural/multilanguage community - we don't need to have a "real" name. I don't know any real person named "Tux" or "Konqi"

When we discussed many years ago, I didn't like the name Tristian. It is still a bit "funny" to me, but it meets the requirement above and sounds unique, which is good for giving TDE its own identify, together with the new mascot and perhaps T-logo. If we just keep proposing different names, we will end up as we did in the past, still stuck on Konqi. So on my side, I am pretty much ok with the name Tristian. I would like things to move forward this time and I am pretty sure people will get used to the name in a very short time, as I did it.

Just like Michele says, we don't need the name to be real, maybe quite the opposite. It's clear that Tristan always reminds everyone of Isolde. As Trix turned out, it reminds us of a different character, or maybe completely different things, and this could be the case with any other "real" name.

That's why I liked Tristian from the very beginning, because it's unique. In Czech, we also have a similar name, Kristián, which has a touch of a noble name. That's why I liked that Tristian sounds similar, but is still different.

Besides, when I saw Sebastião's wallpaper, it immediately came to mind - that's our Tristian. Although several years have passed since Philipe's first proposal and he wasn't really remembered any more, when I saw the character, it immediately evoked his name. And I would say that this is exactly the effect that is desired. That's why I think Trisitian already has its name determined.

Trix is phonetically tricks, OK for a dog, not so much for a reliable computing environment.
