[trinity-users] Does TDE require iBus?
by Thierry de Coulon 12 Apr '20

12 Apr '20

Hello all, Now I have iBus showing in my system tray. It was not there before (at least it did not show). I had to install different things (including Skype and jitsi) for Howoffice work, I don't know if that's where it comes from. I have a feeling it sometimes messes up my keyboard. Is iBus (iBus-daemon, iBus-dconf, iBus-engine-sim, iBus-extension, iBus-portal, iBus-ui-gtk3, iBus-x11) a requirement for TDE? I ask before removing and possibly breaking things... [trinity-users] Just for the records...
by Thierry de Coulon 12 Apr '20

12 Apr '20

I don't imagine many would try it, but I had to investigate installing Deepin Linux on a laptop for my wife (she requires a "Mac like" interface and she IS chinese, so a chinese distributions ensures the gets her chinese stuff running). As Deepin is based on Debian (still Stretch, I found out), I decided to try installing TDE and it works: I can run konqueror on Deepin DE, and Deepin apps on Trinity Desktop. I'm not sure which one governs your Konqueror settings; it could be that they are duplicated for reasons unknown to me, or just that I have migrated through several different Linux systems, always using KDE3 or TDE, so that I am the culprit. Or maybe the KDE5 version of Konqueror is in the .kde folder, and the Trinity version is in .trinity, which would make sense, but it ain't necessarily so. In any case, it seems to me that if you change the entry in these lines, you can have whatever terminal-emulator you want. ************ /home/<USERNAME>/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc -or- /home/<USERNAME>/.trinity/share/config/konquerorrc [Open-with settings] ... /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator,konsole ************ And here you will find another variant: /opt/trinity/share/config.kcfg/konqueror.kcfg <group name="General" > <entry key="TerminalApplication" type="String"> <default>konsole</default> <label></label> <whatsthis>Terminal application to use.</whatsthis> </entry> </group> ************ Maybe this will help. [trinity-users] Current build throws kjobviewer libcups error (cups disabled)
by Snidely Whiplash 08 Apr '20

08 Apr '20

Hello I just did a new build of TDE (git sources from today) on my custom Linux from Scratch system. I don't have CUPS, I don't print, I despise printers, don't have one and have no use for them (well, maybe ballistics targets). Cups is not going to be a dependency on my system. I am passing -DWITH_CUPS=OFF to all the builds (AFAIK it's only valid for tdelibs, ignored everywhere else). Now, when starting tde I get a KJobViewer error dialog with: "There was an error loading tdeprint_cups. The diagnostic is: Library files for "tdeprint_cups.la" not found in paths." Not just once, but twice. There is no setting to disable tdeprint as far as I can see. There is no tdeprint_cups.la either. I have never had this annoyance before. Unless I can find a way to get it to stop, I'm going to restore a backup of my previous tde build. I have already tried renaming kjobviewer but then I get 3 error messages. Creating a bogus tdeprint_cups.la just causes the error dialogs to have blank diagnostic message. Any ideas for a temporary workaround (compile time or run time trickery)? I can't have those error dialogs. Thanks,

[trinity-users] Print Key
by Brian Bates 30 Mar '20

30 Mar '20

Hi All, Running Trinity R14.0.7 on Debian Buster 10.3. The print key shortcut by default starts KSnapshot. When I changed this in both the control center or the menu editor, it made no difference, still wanted to start KSnapshot and not my selected application. Found a file called khotkeysrc in .trintiy/share/config/ and changed all the ksnapshot entries to my application command. Still nothing until after I logged out and in. Now working. BTW: I have remapped other keys successfully using the control center or the menu editor. The print key just seems to have thrown a wobbly for some reason. -- Cheers Buzz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: trinity-users-unsubscribe(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net For additional commands, e-mail: trinity-users-help(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net Read list messages on the web archive: http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/ Please remember not to top-post: http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/mailing_lists/#top-posting

[trinity-users] corrupt unthemed greeter
by Felix Miata 25 Mar '20

25 Mar '20

I just upgraded Buster, Mageia 7 and Fedora 30 installations on a 32-bit PC using an old RV200 Radeon AGP GPU. Then I installed 14.0.7. Buster and Mageia work normally, but the icons and text in Fedora's unthemed greeter are all corrupt. I get similar TDE session results using startx instead of the greeter, which I have as yet been unable to get to launch a TDE session. [trinity-users] KIOExec error when automounting drives
by Janek Stolarek 25 Mar '20

25 Mar '20

Up until recently when I plugged in an external drive it was auto-mounted and Konqueror would open it in a new tab. What happens now is I get a KIOExec error saying that /media/jsto/backup_drive is a directory but a file was expected. However, the derive is mounted correctly - it's just that Konqueror doesn't open it automatically. I can browse the file normally if I naviaget to system:/ in Konqueror. When I connect an encrypted drive I get a prompt for the password (which doesn't work because it's not yet fully implemented, I think) and I can also see there's a file copying progress window that shows Konqueror is trying to copy from system:/media/dm-2 to file:///var/tmp/tdecache-jsto/krun/24101.0.dm-2. If I enter the password then I get the same error as for a non-encrypted drive. Anyone else experiencing similar problems? [trinity-users] tdm config question
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 21 Mar '20

21 Mar '20

Hi all! I have this setup on FreeBSD: - tdm is listening for XDMCP - Xvnc (as nobody) uses XDMCP and is started by inetd on port 5900. - any user can ssh to the server, port 5900 is accessible via tunnel - "vncviewer localhost 5900" briungs up tdm login screen - logging in and working with TDE works flawless - big thumbs up :) But I would like to change the TDM appereance. Now it's black text on blue background, and the DPI settings are wrong (looks like they are 70dpi or something like that). The only thing I can change is the textcolor of the list of users, but the rest of the theme is ignored (no clock, background alwaqys dark blue, small text ...). KJobViewer autostart is dependant on tdeprintrc:Jobs:KeepWindow property, so you can set that to false rather than remove the file, otherwise the next build may reisntall the desktop autostart file. I have created an issue on TGW as a reminder https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/gitea/TDE/tdelibs/issues/78 Every distro would have it, so it's not something that would get noticed. I was thinking, I might well be the only person here that doesn't have CUPS. I'm a stubborn dinosaur... I'll have only what I want, how I want it, and where I want it :-) The option to disable Cups does allow tdelibs to build, at least. It was never a problem for me before this change, perhaps kjobviewer was just silently failing to load (I don't think I've ever seen it, even on my Manjaro gaming setup where I do have Cups... also a build from before the change, I'm soon going to do a new build there too). I don't remember seeing it in KDE back in the 2000's either (and you guessed it, I didn't have a printer then either) I also saw the KJobViewer "keep window permanent" commit in tdelibs when I was looking for the cause of the changed behaviour for me, but didn't make the connection. Indeed I would expect my next build to install that .desktop file with tdebase. Thanks for posting the report. I'm not too good at that. Will test if anything is done about it though.

[trinity-users] ksmserver crashes at logout
by Mio 18 Mar '20

18 Mar '20

I'm trying to debug an annoying bug in ksmserver that happens sometimes leads to it's crash and logout process break. Main trouble that it happens randomly, i can repeat 10 logouts in a row without issues, and next one will be broken. One thing what i've noticed that crash happens when some application didn't respond in time and buttons "Skip notification" and "Cancel logout" appears in the shutdown process window. I've also tested the logout with some SIGSTOP'ped apps and have no issues. That gives me a naive idea, that there have place some race condition and when ksmserver is processing some "client" record, and in the same time corresponding application is finishing it's work that leads to deleting that "client" record, but i'm too newbie in the X transport and other things so i may be wrong. Here are 3 valid backtraces, due to reproducing instability i can't collect more for this time. Maybe someone will have some idea about this bug or methods to more stable reproduce? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: trinity-users-unsubscribe(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net For additional commands, e-mail: trinity-users-help(a)lists.pearsoncomputing.net Read list messages on the web archive: http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/ Please remember not to top-post: http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/mailing_lists/#top-posting

[trinity-users] Can amarok play .APE monkey audio files?

Good day everyone, amarok can't seem to find/see *.ape files in folders and it's not possible to add them to a playlist. Package monkeys-audio is installed. [trinity-users] autoremove removed TDE widgets
by D. R. Evans 03 Mar '20

03 Mar '20

I thought it was perfectly safe to execute "apt autoremove", which I was under the impression simply cleaned up old, unused .deb files. Apparently I was wrong, in a major way :-( After executing autoremove and rebooting, my TDE desktop is missing all the widgets that used to be on the desktop and in the panels. Worse, I can't find them to re-add them to the desktop/panel any more. To give just one example, I used to run superkaramba; now it can't be found anywhere and I can't add it to the panel. What do I need to do to get back my wonderful, functional desktop? That's the last time I trust "autoremove" to do the right thing.... Doc -- Web: http://enginehousebooks.com/drevans

xdg-open and libreoffice
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 01 Mar '20

01 Mar '20

hi all! Looks like a little GNOME just hit me with a club: I'm working on a presentation with libreoffice impress (yes, I hnow, why ...). Now that thing has a function "Edit image using external tool". Selecting that, impress calls "xdg-open file://tmp/sdfsfewf.png" - which call in my case kuickshow - which is not surprising, as I use kuickshow for viewing images. But how do I persuade that piece of a genius to call gimp ??? Nik -- Please do not email me anything that you are not comfortable also sharing with the NSA, CIA ...

Trinity for openSUSE Tumbleweed?
by Maciej Pilichowski 23 Feb '20

23 Feb '20

Hello everyone :-), I have naive question -- I can see there is repo for openSUSE 15.1, but is there a chance for Tumbleweed as well? Not that I am that picky, but simply as it turns out those two flavors are not so interchangeable. When I added Trinity repos for 15.1 and then tried for example install trinity-filelight I got error about missing dependency: Problem: nothing provides libIlmImf-2_2.so.23()(64bit) needed by trinity-tdelibs-14.0.7-1.oss151.x86_64 Of course maybe including regular 15.1 repos (I mean openSUSE distro) could solve this particular issue, but I am afraid it is at risk of damaging something in the system. "TDE could not launch"
by D. R. Evans 22 Feb '20

22 Feb '20

When I right click on a file in konqueror and select a program with which to open the file, sometimes I get a message "TDE could not launch <program-name>". Strangely, the program is actually run, but konqueror becomes non-responsive (and doesn't even refresh properly on the screen). What causes this problem? (and how do I fix it?) Ok go to konqueror, settings, file associations, inode, directory. Click on embedded and them move Detailed List View to the top. I personally use Tree View same thing but gives you the ability to open directories without having to click into them. Do the above for both directory and system_directory Hit apply, then ok, then close out all konq sessions and give it ago. Remember that, if you save a profile with icons or another kind of it, it will default to how you saved. As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This email will self-destuct in five seconds. Good luck Doc.

Trinity Keychain
by Muhammad 18 Feb '20

18 Feb '20

A friend of mind is a [figurines](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figurine) artist, I told him to make me a keychain with Trinity's logo on it. See attached pics along with other samples of his work, mugs. I wonder if it's a good idea to sell merchandise via an official store on your website, merchandise such as shirts carrying creative mottoes about Trinity's philosophy of retaining the classic humane GUI design concepts as oppose to today's , mugs, keychains, thumbdrives carrying liveCD's or Trinity's handbook printed. Talk with a local company, buy a batch of 50 to 500 for a quantity price, then sell them for 2 or 3 times that price. I would suggest a simple feasibility study before attempting such project though.

Sometimes when I cut and paste files using Konqueror it wil crash with a signal 11 (SIGSEGV). It looks like Bug 3008: https://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3008 This happens both when I'm cutting and pasting to the same Konqueror window, or to a different one. I have in detailed list view, Konqueror R14.0.7 in TDE R14.0.7 If I open again Konqueror and try the same cut and paste again it will always crash again. But if I rename the destination folder to something random then the crash will not happen. I hope this helps! jedw1846(a)protonmail.com

Could not find mime type (Sorry pop-up spamming)
by Michael 30 Jan '20

30 Jan '20

I made one change last weekend to mime types (added ".bat" to KWrite) and now I get the Sorry pop-up every time I mouse over a file in Konqueror or open the TCC. The only recent file change I can see in: ~/.local/share/mime/ /opt/trinity/share/mimelnk ~/.local /opt/trinity/share is: michael@local [~/.local]# find ./ -type f -mtime -4 -exec ls -al {} \; ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel Which seems not relevant? TCC >> TDE Components >> File Associations “bat” shows: - applicatoin - - x-kdeuser5 (see screenshot) So... Where is mime type config stored? And what should be in it so it doesn’t spam Sorry pop-ups? Thanks, Michael [1] During this I also found out that KWrite is not in any menu? michael@local [~/.local]# kwrite --version Qt: 3.5.0 TDE: R14.0.6 KWrite: 4.5.14 michael@local [~/.local]# which kwrite /opt/trinity/bin/kwrite Menu >> Utilities >> Editors only has: Kate Midnight Commander editor Kedit FeatherPad Vim Is KWrite not suppose to have a menu entry?

making desktop size sticky?

tde update disaster, helllppppp!!!!!!
by Gene Heskett 22 Jan '20

22 Jan '20

Greetings all; I updated tde about 2 hours ago, 300+ files. Its totally fscked, defaulting to xfce4 and nothing but a tiny terminal works. But that terminal is enough to get more started. Can't find kmail from the xfce4 menu but kmail is what it reports it cannot find so $path is screwed. I've gone single and tried to relink default-display back to /opt/trinity/bin/tdm, failed. Tried to reset it in /etc/default, failed. Tried just about everthiing including re-installing the trinty-base & twm/tdm stuffs. no luck I finally found /opt/trinity/bin/kmail and have it running but no clue if I can send this. How in tuncket do I restore my default desktop to tde now??? I asccidently touched the folder icon, it opened a huge requester asnd froze everthing but gkrellm which I had found and started so I could see if the robots were DDOSing me, so I had to re-start it with the front panel reset button. I likely have the whole thing to fix as right now its cycleing back and forth as its starting x with a tde login but clears that screen and eventually starts xfce4. And here come the damned bots, so I gotta get iptables running. Thanks for any help. debian stretch on amd64 if that helps. Hi people, Running into dcopserve and tdelaunch failures. I did all the usual things. deleted dop etc etc files, check perms and the like. Even created a new user.Different machines etc. Root runs with very little problem but still has those errors on occasion. General question... Anyone else encounter this? Kate, There is an old bug resulting from an iceAuth issue that will prevent dcop from starting. I cannot recall the exact issue, but it was either an xorg or iceauth version change issue. Another possible problem is a change or misconfigured hostname. Have you changed that lately? I did a quick search and can't find a decent link to the iceauth issue I'm thinking about. Maybe your google foo is better than mine there, but I recall it being a 2016 issue? (or maybe a year or two on either side). The search results I get show 2008-2009 range that isn't the problem I'm thinking of.

screen color distortion after xrandr
by Felmon Davis 12 Jan '20

12 Jan '20

greets! I was trying to get a second monitor (a tv) to work using xrandr. I noticed that the screen on the laptop would suffer severe, almost 'psychedelic', effects if I hit a certain setting. unfortunately I don't recall the setting but the ill effect was consistent and rendered the disply nearly unreadable. and the only solution was to end the session. then by accident I hit the 'save this configuration' key and now the setting is permanent. btw I created a second user and it doesn't suffer from the problem. I cannot find a way to restore the proper display setting. I have been told there is no way to save configuration built into xrandr so (I guessed) the configuration must be stored by the TDERandRtray application. but I don't see anything in '/root/.trinity/share/config/tderandrtrayrc' and besides, if there were, it should affect the second user too. it's an Asus Zenbook with Intel HD graphics. I am considering shifting to the second user and grappling with the UID and GID changes though I ultimately want to resurrect the original username. thank you for any help. f. -- Felmon Davis Verbum sat sapienti.

configuring trash?
by D. R. Evans 11 Jan '20

I expect I'm being blind and it's somewhere obvious, but I can't find any information on configuring trash in TDE. Example questions for which I'd like to find answers: how large can it grow? how long can files stay in trash before they're deleted? where is trash actually located? Mouse too fast - where can I set DPI ?
by Internal Affairs 08 Jan '20

I experienced the problem after I finally did a major update. Maybe it is a udev vs evdev thing. I do not have this probem on MX (you know, the old Mepis / Antix related distro). Funny thing is I cannot find xsettings or something there. If only I would know where to look I could compare :) There is a EXEGNU LiveCD with Trinity, if I recall correctly it is working well there. Thoughs on mounting of devices on FreeBSD

Hi Slavec! What about this methode of mounting removeable devices on FreeBSD: - add user to "operator" group - sysctl vfs.usermount=1 - add a ~/media folder - mount the device on ~/media/[NAME] (which is owned by user and does not require root password) Would this be a viable way? Trinity Desktop Environment R14.0.7 released, new target R14.0.8 started...
by Slávek Banko 05 Jan '20

05 Jan '20

Hi all, if you have not seen announcement, R14.0.7 been released! https://www.trinitydesktop.org/newsentry.php?entry=2019.12.30 All deb packages are fully available, including all mirrors. Added support for Debian 10 (Buster), Raspbian 9 (Stretch), Raspbian 10 (Buster), Ubuntu 19.04 (Disco) and Ubuntu 19.10 (Eoan). For LTS versions of Ubuntu, armhf packages are now available. Building packages for Debian 6 (Squeeze), Raspbian 7 (Wheezy), Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) and Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful) have been stopped. Updated ISO images are available for Slax with Trinity and Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic). https://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/cdimages/ Although changes have been made to the primary archive and the layout has changed, redirects are set and symlinks created so that the existing URLs continue to work and you don't have to change your sources.list. Regarding RPM packages we look forward and hope that François will prepare new packages soon. Now already begun work on a new target R14.0.8. Therefore in the Preliminary Stable Builds apt repository you can soon expect new packages. If you used the Preliminary Stable Builds repository only temporarily, and you prefer to stick on the official final release, it is now the best time to switch to the official repository. Otherwise, we will be very happy if you help us in testing the upcoming release. Thank you for your attention :) Cheers -- Slávek

[trinity-users] apt-cacher ng pukes with trinity-sb and trinity-testing repos
by David Hare 04 Jan '20

I need apt-cacher-ng as i build system images (Exe GNU/Linux, Devuan+TDE) but have limited internet access. All repos, including http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/deb/trinity-r14.0.x work normally with apt-cacher-ng except when trinity-sb and/or trinity-testing are enabled. They are configured exactly as per Trinity site instructions and the keyring is installed. Without using apt-cacher-ng (proxy disabled in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/) trinity-sb and/or trinity-testing work. They do work using a (much) older apt-cacher-ng version (0.8.0-3) Is something wrong with the "InRelease" file? Thanks in advance.. First, Happy and best new year 2020 to you ! Since last upgrade of tdm, tdm doesn't start automatically as before and why ? The system starts in konsole mode. I have to login as root and type : # killall tdm and tdm starts. Even if /etc/rc1.d to /et/rc6.d and rcS.d = K19tdm OR S19tdm : system starts in konsole mode. tdm is in /etc/init.d/ I use "sysv-rc-conf" to put K or S. What is the difference between tdm and tdm-trinity ? Thanks and Regards Aandré

trouble with screensaver not locking
by James D Freels 03 Jan '20

03 Jan '20

Hello TDE users/developers: I am using debian/buster now since it's release. I am also using the "preliminary stable builds" of TDE using the following location: deb http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity-sb buster deps-r14 main-r14 I still have a couple of problems remaining. Perhaps I can get this one fixed first. I have set my screen to be blanked (it can be any of the options on configure - kdesktop). It will not automatically blank or lock. I can manually blank and lock it, and it works as expected. Only the automatic method by waiting a set amount of time is not working. How can I diagnose and fix this problem. I have used other screensavers, and this is the only one that is giving me problems, and this is the one I prefer (from within TDE). Thanks again. Jim Freels, PhD (retired)

TDE on Raspbian?
by Janek Stolarek 01 Jan '20

01 Jan '20

Hi all, I got myself the latest Raspberry Pi 4 for Christmas. It's a pretty powerful machine advertised as a fully-fledged desktop PC and with 4 1.5GHz cores in the CPU and 4GB of RAM it delivers on that promise. The primary operating system on the Pi is Raspbian, a distribution directly based on Debian, running an LXDE desktop environment. I was wondering how much effort would it take to bring TDE to the Pi? I'm guessing that architecture would be the primary obstacle (Pi is based on ARM), but would it pose much of a challenge? Raspberry Pi certainly seems like a potent market for TDE. Maybe it is worth the effort of having an ARM release for Raspbian? Maybe this is a good opportunity to bring in new users? I wonder what is the devs' take on this? Janek

trouble with panel icons staying put
by James D Freels 23 Dec '19

23 Dec '19

Hello TDE users/developers: I am using debian/buster now since it's release. I am also using the "preliminary stable builds" of TDE using the following location: deb http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity-sb buster deps-r14 main-r14 I am having 3 problems. The first was with TDM, and that has been resolved (http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::16492). I think that my 2nd and 3rd problem may be related, so I will describe them both together in this request for help. Panel icons moving: My panel is on the bottom centered. However, it doesn't matter where it is located, the icons will not stay put. It seems that the last panel I move, continues to follow my mouse when it is active within the panel. This drives me absolutely crazy. I have tried the "lock panels" switch, and it makes no difference. How do I fix this ? Screen saver/locker not starting automatically: The (screen saver/lock screen) will not start automatically as it should. No matter what choice I make for the saver (I prefer blank, but have tried others), if I try to have it start automatically, it will not start. I can manually start the lock screen, and it works as expected, and unlocks with the password. I have also tried disabling the screen saver provided by TDE, and then use another screen saver from the distribution (such as xscreensaver), and it works fine. Of course, I prefer to use the TDE screensaver. How can I fix this ? I use the commercial nvidia driver installed with debian/buster packages. I have also tried removing the debian-supplied nvidia drivers, and used the nvidia drivers .run installer obtained directly from nvidia. Makes no difference in these 2 issues. I am not sure these 2 issues are related. Thanks again. Jim Freels, PhD (retired)

some buglist for the 14.0.6 release
by Mio 23 Dec '19

23 Dec '19

Hello guys. I've installed a PClinuxOS distro with TDE 14.0.6 recently and collected some buglist while exploring it. High possibility that some bugs isn't actual now (or just not bugs but feature lol) so i decided to sent it via mail first. Here is it: [konqueror] no file previews for ntfs-mounted disks [konqueror] duplicated items in the "System" tab sometimes (https://files.catbox.moe/6csxx6.png) [konqueror] stops generating previews if user opens a file [konqueror] may return "Memory allocation failed" when omage opens in embedded preview [kuickshow] shows broken image from framebuffer instead of opened file [kmplayer] seek bar didn't work correctly (click on the random time, mplayer will skip time == one step) [kmplayer] press on the "Play" button when playback is paused will stop it (possible it's not a bug but kinda annoying) [compositor] settings do not apply after click on "Apply" button, re-enabling is needed [compositor] incorrect calculation of the shadow position, i was not able to make it centered [compositor] may apply transparency to the windows even if this option is disabled [compositor] "apply only for decorations" option does not work [compositor] several re-enablings will result in gui(twin?) hang [compositor] possibly didn't work correctly when system goes in suspend [compositor] -- overall opinion: quite buggy and unusable -- [lockscreen] when exiting from suspend, lockscreen may appear above current desktop, not clean background [keyboard config] some hotkeys didn't work (like Alt+PrtSc) [keyboard config] hotkey assign window is laggy, if opened too long - twin will hang [keyboard config] kb layout switch didn't work with embedded switcher (known bug) [kkbswitch] strange font in tray icon [twin] may hang if some messy window appeared (example: MPUI frontend under wine, set "Compact mode", open a file, pause playback, apply window size by frame size and then make bottom toolbar appear-dissapear. Frame will distort and twin will hang after some time) [kmix] -- all bugs when tray regulator was set to pulseaudio output -- [kmix] tray regulator not adjusting on wheel scroll; my soundcard master output volume (in mixer window) is adjusted instead. [kmix] soundcard master output volume adjusts from 52 to 100% (not sure if trinity related though) [kmix] tray regulator didn't apply settings to the output it was set to (i can set 0% in the pulseaudio output tab but with tray regulator i can get the sound 100% and pa output in mixer will be still 0%) [kweather] no actual info for Rostov-on-Don(RU), shows data from 2018 [showfoto] crash after click on the Colors tab (TDECRSH-eea4c1d-5260ea9-a67aab6-5e9e698-843a94c-8d10fec-2036aa0) [amarok] crashes on playback activation, possibly after recent xine-lib update (PClinuxOS, no debug info available) [arts] samplerate change affects event sounds tempo (old bug, from KDE) [tde menu] often lose mouse focus (affects search bar in classic mode and tabs in kickoff mode) [desktop(?)] if Menu bar at screen top is enable, it appears with the additional unused space (https://files.catbox.moe/wcewuq.png) [gtk3-wrapper] looks like needs to update theme schemes (applying TDE theme to the GTK3 apps completely brokes theming of those) [tdm(?)] gtk3 apps that needed root access didn't start after successful auth when tdm is set as DM. [tdm] "scale & crop setting" didn't work for wallpaper, picture will be still just "scale"d. But picture will be resized as needed directly after login [dbus rule script] "at console" rule is deprecated and didn't work, affects power options for generic users [mailing lists] http://trinity-users.pearsoncomputing.net/?0::16489 Cannot decode string with wide characters at /usr/lib/powerpc64le-linux-gnu/perl/5.24/Encode.pm line 202. Also one question, for what i can't find the answer: is there option that can replace full paths with short ones in the windows headers and taskbar (file:///media/dsk/docs..., Konqueror, KWrite and others)?

trouble with tdm on debian/buster
by James D Freels 22 Dec '19

22 Dec '19

Hello TDE users/developers: First, let me take this opportunity to state, once again, TDE is by far, my favorite desktop. I have used it for many years, and continue to support it financially and encourage all users to do likewise. I am using debian/buster now since it's release. I am also using the "preliminary stable builds" of TDE using the following location: deb http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity-sb buster deps-r14 main-r14 I am having 2 problems. The first is with TDM, which I will describe here. I will ask for help on the 2nd problem later. In addition to tdm-trinity, I also have 2 other login managers installed: lightdm and lxdm. Both of these are working fine. Only TDM has this problem. I would much prefer to use TDM. If I boot up under TDM (after running dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity first to initiate TDM into the boot sequence), it starts fine, but continuously hangs in the main console with one of the infamous systemd problems wherein we get the "a startjob is running ..." and it NEVER ends until rebooted. The TDM session appears to run fine, and I can login and run TDE fine. However, because the vt1 console is never ending waiting to complete, I have no other VT consoles. Essentially, I have NO virtual consoles at all. Further, computer resources are always wasted and never ends waiting for the the startup to completely finish. This ONLY happens when booting up with TDM. I can bootup with LXDM or LIGHTDM and this does not happen. Further, I can issue a "systemctl stop lightdm" or "systemctl stop lxdm" (depending on which is running from the boot), then issue a "systemctl start tdm-trinity" and TDM runs fine and there is not a never ending startjob waiting to complete. So, it appears that TDM does not start in the same order of the boot sequence as LXDM and/or LIGHTDM which is causing this problem. It is at this point, where I need some help in how to fix it, and I suspect that all debian/buster users may have the same issue, but not sure of course. I hope I can help get his bug fixed before the final release of TDE for buster. Thanks again. Jim Freels, PhD (retired)

Hello all you good people, My mouse is moving too fast. It is a simple Crystal White Mouse bij Logitech, nothing fancy. I tried setting DPI in the hwdb of udev. But it seems like it only works for a few seconds, and then the mouse is fast again. Setting accelaration to 0 also does not help. I have no idea where the DPI is set. evdev is not present on this system. My distro is ExeGnu. Any ideas? Eric-Jan

kmail forever indexing is back

Greetings all; So I picked the largest cur dirs, and using mc have moved about 2 years worth of each to an outside of the ~/Mail view of kmail. And nuked those index files, so it has to rebuild them. Its not done with that yet, but we'll see. Damn this is getting old. Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. How to minimize all windows (and not have them pop back up by themselves)?
by Michael 15 Dec '19

15 Dec '19

Hi All, Both the ‘Show Desktop’ button and Ctrl+Alt+D will minimize all windows and upon repeat action raise just those prior minimized windows. All good, except; A) It seems locking the session also raises the windows again and B) raising anything prior to re-clicking ‘Show Desktop’ resets the ‘Show Desktop’ action so it doesn’t now raise just those prior minimized windows. Replication: A) Ctrl+Alt+D {windows are minimized} Lock Session Login {windows have been restored} B) Ctrl+Alt+D {windows are minimized} Click a task in the taskbar (e.g. Firefox) Ctrl+Alt+D {window is minimized} {prior windows are not restored} Anyone know of a way to minimize all displayed windows such that A) results in windows staying minimized upon lock/unlock and in B) (re)performing the action (or even using some other command) results in the original minimized windows being restored? Possibly something using dcop kdesktop ??? , maybe dcop twin ??? (I tried looking there, but even using kdcop, it’s like finding a needle in a haystack for things even relevant) Thanks, Michael PS: Way to go whoever is doing TDE SEO, Google search on “dcop gui” returns https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Tips_And_Tricks in 5th place :)

extra small font size in "TDE Control Module"
by Felmon Davis 13 Dec '19

13 Dec '19

greetings, folks, through inadvertence I wiped out my Linux partition. I restored my files but I didn't have a backup of the system so I installed a new version of q40s (which runs a version of TDE). I use a prior version on another laptop I don't have access to right now. then began the misadventures with font sizes in this HiDPI laptop; I got some help from the list (thanks!) last yr with such problems on a similar laptop. I've wrestled them to the ground for the most part but the windows labelled as "TDE Control Module" have teensy font size. where do I find the file that regulates their appearance? thanks for the advice. fjd -- Felmon Davis

TDE flickers wildly and unusably; KDE OK
by D. R. Evans 13 Dec '19

13 Dec '19

I just installed TDE on a new-to-me system running debian stable (buster). All the initial system installation was done from a live CD, and it installed KDE. That installed version of KDE works as well as KDE ever works these days. In particular, though, the screen looks fine (1920x1200) and everything works as expected. In the newly-installed TDE, though, the desktop flickers wildly and the desktop is simply unusable: input is lost during the flickers, so most keyboard/mouse input is not even seen by the desktop. Where should I look to try to eliminate all the flickering so that I can get a usable TDE? Doc -- Web: http://enginehousebooks.com/drevans

my KMail problems, continued
by Gene Heskett 12 Dec '19

12 Dec '19

Since my kmail problems seem to be both legendary and generally ignored, I have based my attempted fixes, which so far have only managed to fix it for a week at most. And I thought 2 weeks ago I had found a fix, but then the motherboard caught fire at one of the usb to back panel headers, requiring a fire extinguisher]s services and stinking up the place something awful. S9 as of last evening, a new mobo, cpu is now a 9nth gen core i5 with 6 cores running at 3.7 GHz and more memory, from 8 to 32GB, yadda yadda has given kmail a brand new playpen to raise hell in. Which is exactly what its doing, bounceing from core to core, using 87% to 100% of whichever core it running on at this second. A brief description seems to be that it is continuously regenerating the index files forever, burning up a core of the cpu forever. I say burning up somewhat tongue-in-check as I bought the biggest cpu cooler that didn't need water, and its running maybe 3 degrees above room temp. This I assume includes the sorted lists. But because this corpus of email has been copied and recopied so many times, and the copy creation is faster than the time granularity of the sort, the sort is never satisfied so it goes on forever. What I'd like to do is ask linux to lie during one more copy operation, by having a script scan the header of the message for the oldest date, which likely is the date the message was rx'd here, and assign the filesystems creation date from that header date. This would have the effect of restoreing the time differences it is sorting by such that there should not be 50 messages all sharing the same second in 2017 creation date from the last copy operation which is the situation now. This of course is asking linux to lie as some of these messages are 20 years older than their creation dates on the disk. So, can it be done? If so, how? Or, can we change the sort date/time from linux's filesystem view, to the date/time contained in the messages header? This would slow the sort, a lot, but would restore the time granularity of the sort. What say you? Thanks. hiberate, lid closed thinkpad X1
by Uwe Brauer 07 Dec '19

07 Dec '19

Hi I brought up the topic a while ago, and it is really something I am missing much. Here is the situation. 1. I posses a Thinkpad X1 running Ubuntu 16.04 2. On top of that trinity 4:14.0.6. 3. When I use the gnome desktop shipped by Ubuntu, closing the lid hibernates my laptop. 4. When I try the same under trinity it does not work, also I configured TDEPowersave to do that precisely hibernate when lid is closing. 5. I can hibernate in trinity either pressing FN 4 or using the shutdown menu. I am really desperate, it must be a bug, did anybody make some progress in resolving this issue? Regards Uwe Brauer

[trinity-users] no TDE on Mageia 7
by Felix Miata 05 Dec '19

Looking in journal and Xorg.0.log I see no clues. X starts, but startx just starts X and exits. Trinity-tdm is installed, but no other *dm, and I see no evidence of its configuration in systemctl list-unit-files or systemctl list-units. /var/log/tdm.log was last written over a year ago. Trinity tries to start using startx /opt/trinity/bin/starttde, but a popup comes twice, then X exits: "There was an error setting up inter-process communications for TDE. The messag returned by the system was: Could not read network connection list. /root/.DCOPserver_hp945_0 Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running!" startx icewm works. 4k man... Resolved, I think...
by BorgLabs - Kate Draven 02 Dec '19

02 Dec '19

Hi people, Ok I realized my mistake and fixed it (See below). However the TV doesn't support that resolution. So it appears, I either need to upgrade cards or stay at this resolution. So the question is now, video card recommendations. I just want something that will take advantage of the greater capabilities of the TV. Thank you again. Kate Original Question: I stepped into it. A client gave me a Samsung QLED 43 inch TV to use as a monitor for "fixing" his zip drive problem (he had it slaved to a ROM drive so it wasn't working properly). One tax audit survival later, TV... Anyway, I want to take advantage and run a higher res. Currently it's running at 1920x1080. I've tried a variety of thing to change the res but none were really successful. The card can run higher resolution than that. The card is a Radeon HD 6450 with 2G DDR3 with a max res of 2560 x 1600 at 60 Hz. I tried using pclos's ui but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm assuming I'm doing something wrong (obviously) so here I am. Any thoughts humans, AIs and others? Kate

How to configure the Calendar that Clock pops-up?
by Michael 23 Nov '19

23 Nov '19

Hi All, In KOrganizer you can select the Holiday Region (in Time & Date), so that Sat, Sun and all [US for me] holidays are shown in red. The panel app Clock will pop-up a Calendar when you click it, but it doesn’t seem tied to KOrganizer? Every day on it is black. Is there a way to get whatever runs the pop-up Calendar to do the same as KOrganizer with day colors? Or better yet, have Clock pop-up a mini KOrganizer calendar (so all the days are color coded and you only have to maintain one configuration)? Thanks, Michael

Personally I find the Off topic posts more interesting that the On topic posts, so forcing people to go private just for list’s appropriate etiquette sake seems a bit too far? Obviously anything actually private should go private, or we possibly end up with annoying sales pitches. In that regard here’s a proposal? - If you’re going off topic, add to the subject “[OT]” (positioned about where whoever adds [BULK] *). (If someone went OT, be nice and add it for them in any OT replies.) - Continue using the original thread just for on topic posts. Okay, we’ve got Bill’s and my proposals (and de.bug’s I guess), everyone toss out what you’d like to see. That way we can come up with a definitive “way we do it here” statement. So people don’t get butthurt and leave in a huff ;) . (Or maybe she/he thought I called him stupid for being young? Lacking quality education yes, stupid, no... If they have the desire, anyone can open a book and make up for any educational lack.) I’ll shut up now. Best, Michael * Speaking of the [BULK] thing, whoever keeps adding that would you please edit your subject before sending the email to remove it? Better yet, edit your rule/filter so it’s never added. Highly annoying that.

Years ago I decided I was going to donate $200 per year to some open source project. Occasionally I’d split it up, but most often it went o Drupal, as that is (was [1]) the open source project my business relies on. Last year I sent it to TDE. This year I’m splitting it between TDE, MX Linux, and Backdrop CMS. But, like Felmon, I received zero acknowledgment it was received. (To be fair, I’ve never received any acknowledgment from any donation I’ve made to people at xda-developers either, so maybe it’s just a sole proprietor thing?) I’m pretty sure donations to TDE don’t make a dent in Tim’s account receivables, but . . . Questions: - Has anyone ever received a donation acknowledgment from Tim? - Is there a donation acknowledgment page somewhere? - Do we, the donators, think we should get one? - Tim how are you doing? (Talk to us man!) OT Questions: - Does anyone else make a set amount of donations per year? - Pro’s? Con’s? - What other methods do people use for rewarding open source? Best All, Michael [1] In case anyone cares (this was the last ‘prediction’ for the next year thread), here’s a overview explanation I did 2 years ago: https://www.drupal.org/forum/general/news-and-announcements/2018-02-11/pred…

TDE has been my one and only everyday desktop environment for many years. What I like the most is its small footprint and so high customization capabilities (see the screenshot :-). I upgrade the OS using the TDE LiveCD on a new partition and then re-install the programs I use all the time and copy the personal data from the previous release. When all is running as I want, I delete the previous partition. I did this many times without any glitch for years. I love the Baghira theme and kooldock utility. I build them from release to release smoothly without any glitch. I speak of TDE to all Linux users I meet and do my best to propagate its usage. I tried many DE's during my long programmer life: nothing beats Trinity in term of configuration. Long life to TDE!
