CDE window decorations missing?
by John P. Willis 12 Jun '19

12 Jun '19

Hello all, The CDE window decorations appear to be missing after upgrading from Debian Jessie to Debian Stretch and also upgrading TDE (now on R14.0.6). Have they been removed from TDE, or is there something I can do to get them back? mails spams and kmail
by andre_debian＠numericable.fr 06 Jun '19

06 Jun '19

Hello, As many, I receive many spams. Kmail has a 2 filters : "Filter configuration" and "pop filter configuration" Which is the difference ? For some mails, I want to delete them. This option does'nt seem possible, only to put them in the trash or another folder, and deleting them after manually. So, is it possible to delete these mails without to put them before in the trash ? Thanks, regards, André

kmail filter problem
by Gene Heskett 03 Jun '19

03 Jun '19

Greetings folks; I have had a loooong list of all caps strings at the top of my filter list for years. But recently the filter has been changed to apparently be caseless. But I've had to pick quite a few messages back out of the spam folder and put them where they should go by hand. Then one of those lists is in the runup to a new release, and the subject line has included the word planning which now is firing on the ANNI rule so it get moved to thespam folder. As I've played with the filter rules trying to fix this without knowing it had become case insensitive, I've been highlighting the message and hitting ctl+j, which is supposed to apply the filters again, but the messages so treated to the ctl+j are now being deleted! So I've apparently lost forever, around 10 messages from a very important to me, list before I started the filter log viewer to see what was going on. Can you please put back the case sensitivity? I've checked all the font settings I can tihnk of. Everything is set to at least 28 or 32 as I am on a 4k screen. Everything works as expected in other desktop environments. New matching widescreen kdm & ksplash themes "KDEglass" (or "TDEglass")
by David C. Rankin 01 Jun '19

01 Jun '19

To all those who say new KDE3/TDE content is dead... I says "Bah-Humbug!" Here is a matched set of kdm / ksplash widescreen themes. (or tdm / tsplash, I can't keep up...) The kspash theme requires the moodin ksplash engine which is available by default. KDEglass widescreen kdm theme https://www.deviantart.com/drankinatty/art/Kdeglass-Kdm-1-0-799928564 KDEglass widescreen ksplash (moodin engine) https://www.deviantart.com/drankinatty/art/Kdeglass-Ksplash-Moodin-engine-7… When you download, they are damn .zip files because deviantart will not allow you to save as .tar.gz or .tar.bz2 (sheeze you think by now they would have grown up) So, download to a folder, switch to the folder and: unzip kdeglass_moodin.zip tar -cjf kdeglass_moodin.tar.bz2 kdeglass_moodin and unzip kdeglass_kdm-1.0.zip tar -cjf kdeglass_kdm-1.0.tar.bz2 kdeglass_kdm Then both can be added through kde control center, Appearance->ksplash "Add" and the same for kdmtheme. You can also install manually. Enjoy. Let me know if something doesn't work, and I'll tweak it. They are working fine here. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Hi, a recent update has left me without the sleep and hibernate buttons on logout. [trinity-users] which distro might be preferable with POTS web connection and WINE?
by Felix Miata 24 May '19

24 May '19

Maybe the better question would be does anyone here have any users using POTS and WINE, and if so, on which distro? I haven't haven't suffered POTS or known more than one who has in close to 20 years. The one who has is the owner of the target. He has zero competence in computer setup or maintenance, historically struggling to do much more with internet than collect Windows malware. His email is Juno. Absent a suggestion backed by recent experience with POTS and WINE, I'll be choosing between Mageia, openSUSE and Debian. Target is a Vaio laptop (not mine) with 2.2GHz dual core with 2GB RAM and GM965 14" 1280x800 video. I have an openSUSE maintenance installation (only IceWM for X) on it now, which will stay. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is religion, not science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. TDE Weblate Translation Workspace Available!
by Slávek Banko 19 May '19

19 May '19

The Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) development team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the new TDE Weblate Translation Workspace (TWTW) collaboration tool, which allows users to easily translate TDE strings into their languages and contribute to improve the quality of the TDE translations. TWTW is a self-hosted instance of Weblate designed to manage TDE translations. It is tightly integrated with TDE Gitea Workspace (TGW) and provides: * a simple and clean user interface for working on translations * integrated quality checks of translations * displaying of referenced source files in TGW * retrieving translations and templates from TGW * automatic updating of translations according to the templates * automated committing of translations back into TGW * proper crediting of translators in commit messages * consistent updating of strings from both stable and development branches Thanks to TWTW users can simply focus on the translation work without having to worry about how to get the translation template files, how to update them and how to send their changes back to developers. Even users without any coding knowledge will be able to successfully contribute to improve translation strings and make TDE an even better environment. Read more about TWTW and how to use it on the wiki https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/TDE_Weblate_Translation_Workspace and access the workspace at https://mirror.git.trinitydesktop.org/weblate .

My newly installed stretch/tde logs are being heavily spammed by a task called hpfax. And synaptic says its not installed. After upgrade to 14.0.6, kcontrol doesn't allow Administrator Mode
by J Leslie Turriff 09 May '19

09 May '19

Hi, I've upgraded my OpenSuSE Leap 15 to Trinity 14.0.6, but now I can't use Administrator Mode to e.g. change the Login Manager settings. As a regular user I can start the Trinity Control Center and navigate to System Administration -> Login Manager, but when I click on Administrator Mode I get a tdesu window to fill in the root password, but after filling in the root password it is non-responsive. (See attachment 1.) The problem appears to be with tdesu, because when I kill that, the Control Center window is unlocked again. If I start a root konsole session and enter kcontrol & the Trinity Control Center starts, but has only two components visible (see attachment 2). I also see the following messages in the root konsole window: | █ [tdebuildsycoca] tdebuildsycoca running... | [tdebuildsycoca] Reusing existing tdesycoca. | kcontrol: WARNING: No TDE menu group with X-TDE-BaseGroup=settings found ! Defaulting to Settings/ What do I need to change to get the Control Center working properly? What other information will help diagnose this? Leslie

kicker panel died
by Gene Heskett 08 May '19

08 May '19

Greetings all; I did get it restarted but it was quite a dance. And I think changing the screen background was what killed it. It disappeared when I clicked on apply to change the background. But I just changed the background to half the supplied photos w/o it happening again. But it happened. This might be a place to write a script to relaunch if it disappears from the process list. I hope it doesn't happen frequently. Just saying I guess. Bit of a puzzle to navigate ones workspaces by ctl+F#. Dual booting Devuan and FreeBSD?
by Robert Peters 08 May '19

08 May '19

Hello, Now running TDE under Devuan ascii. SSD has lots of empty space in which I installed FreeBSD 12 from USB. But it didn't install the boot selection menu. Entered the Live Disk command line and tried using boot0cfg, which created a minimal menu - to boot I still have to keep the USB plugged in. At startup I need to find a way to run FreeBSD on the SSD to be able to install TDE, etc. Any ideas? Robert

Greetings all; 1st Q is "deb line to install the whole TDE to stretch"? 2nd is, is there any way to insert an image so that is seen by the receiver with the next line of text after being a continuation of the message, like a caption for that image? The last time I tried inserting an image at the cursor I got about 6 black boxes that had nothing in the echo from a list that does take inline images from winderz machines. Thanks. Re: [trinity-users] mouse behavior in new GTK apps under TDE [solved]
by dep 05 May '19

05 May '19

Turns out, the geniuses at Gnome/GTK/GIMP came up with new and flaky sliders (not *quite* as bad as the disappearing scrollbars, but close). These allow the slider to work as expected if you employ the top half of the slider, but not if you use the lower half, where the pointer turns into a double-headed arrow and does God-knows-what. Seems to me that UI design got about right at, say, KDE-3.51, but the children keep screwing around with it instead of adding actual features. And in any case, conventions have been flung down and danced upon, so the idea of window controls behaving identically from application to application are about where they were with DOS 4.1. dep Sent with ProtonMail. Because privacy matters.

I have a stretch testing image from the LCNC folks that I put on an old Dell out in the garage as the sacrificial goat, and its running quite well so far, so this wheezy may get retired finally. Sometime in the next week or two if the creek doesn't get too high. :) Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. mouse behavior in new GTK apps under TDE
by dep 01 May '19

01 May '19

Greetings . . . I've installed the newest GIMP, 2.10.x, and I've observed and endured a phenomenon that I've previously found in other new Gnome apps running under TDE: functions such as scrolling and slider bars are *very* slow. The mouse pointer moves as quickly as expected, but the scroll/slide pokes along and sometimes comes to a complete halt. Is there a setting someplace that will let me use Gnome apps under TDE and have the mouse work as well as it does in native Gnome? I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Thanks in advance. dep Sent with ProtonMail. Because privacy matters.

new camera, digikam can't see it
by Gene Heskett 27 Apr '19

27 Apr '19

Greetings all; The camera is a Canon pssx429is(bk) Otherwise called a PowerShot SX420IS plugged a match usb cable into it, but while camera cts differently with usb power applied, there is zilch logged, either in syslog or dmesg indicating a connection is available. Canon has only drivers using nfc, or wifi, and only for the last 4 versions of (spit) winders. Is there any hope of getting the images out of it short of removing the card and putting it in a reader? I'd rather not do that, so while as a camera it beats my nikon l100 by a country mile, I'll take it back for a refund based on lack of image access by any means under linux. Mounting it in a reader does work, but leaving it in the camera makes buckets more sense. I've taken one pix, so an ls -lR of /media/usb0 gets this: gene@coyote:~$ ls -lR /media/usb0 /media/usb0: total 32 drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 32768 Apr 26 2019 DCIM /media/usb0/DCIM: total 64 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 32768 Apr 26 2019 100___04 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 32768 Apr 26 2019 CANONMSC /media/usb0/DCIM/100___04: total 4704 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4809306 Apr 26 2019 IMG_0001.JPG /media/usb0/DCIM/CANONMSC: total 32 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 108 Apr 26 2019 M0100.CTG gene@coyote:~$ Does this provide any clues as to how to do it with the card still in the camera? Making TDE aware of non-Trinity applications
by J Leslie Turriff 26 Apr '19

26 Apr '19

Is there a way to make TDE aware of running non-Trinity applications so that they can be resurrected after Logout/Login? I have at least one X11-based application (X2 - The Programmer's Editor) that I use extensively, and it would be nice if it could remember across Logout/Login events. I'm wondering if something like a DCOP wrapper might do the job? Leslie

TDE re-launch process doesn’t capture nice level
by Michael 25 Apr '19

25 Apr '19

Whatever is responsible for re-launching apps after a logout and login isn’t capturing the nice level of the previously running apps. Steps to recreate: - Boot and/or login normally - At TDE desktop run a menu item with nice settings - - Example: “nice -n 5 firefox %u” - Check top/ps for firefox: Verify nice is set correctly - Through TDE menu “Log out” - Login at LightDM greeter - Check top/ps for firefox: Notice nice is not set # # # I don’t mind creating a bug report, but… - Is this already a known issue? - What is the thing responsible for re-launching apps? (so I don’t give the dev’s headaches trying to figure out what I’m talking about ;) Best, Michael

It turns out a lot of files where corrupted during an update. I'm limiting the reps to the two Ali has set in synaptic from now on to keep things like this from happening again. I decided to reload the OS (PCLOS Big Daddy edition) to make a new clean setup. The benefits are wonderful. The system is much faster now with the clean install. Ali says he'll have a new iso out soon, so I'll do a clean install from that as well. So, to make a long story short (too late), bluetooth is working again. thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Trinity Desktop Environment R14.0.6 released, new target R14.0.7 started...
by Slávek Banko 19 Apr '19

19 Apr '19

Hi all, if you have not seen announcement, R14.0.6 been released! http://www.trinitydesktop.org/newsentry.php?entry=2019.03.30 Although there are problems with the mirror system that we are trying to resolve, if you use url pointing to the main redirector in your sources lists, the packages are available to you despite this problem. As far as Ubuntu is concerned, the build of packages for Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty) has been stopped, packages for Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic) have been added. Packages for Ubuntu 19.04 (Disco) are currently only available in the Preliminary Stable Builds repository. RPM packages and distributions has also been updated - François thank you! In earlier announcements you could read that there are updated LiveCDs - Slax with Trinity, and Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic). http://mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity-sb/cdimages/ Now already begun work on a new target R14.0.7. Therefore in the Preliminary Stable Builds apt repository you can soon expect new packages. If you used the Preliminary Stable Builds repository only temporarily, and you prefer to stick on the official final release, it is now the best time to switch to the official repository. Otherwise, we will be very happy if you help us in testing the upcoming release. Thank you for your attention :) Cheers -- Slávek

Moving TDE user ‘stuff’ to a new distribution
by Michael 15 Apr '19

15 Apr '19

Hi All, I’m looking to move all my user data, config’s, and profiles (for KMail, Konsole, LibreOffice, Calibre, Zim, ...) from my old machine to the new machine. Old: Ubuntu 14.04 New: MX-18 I tried a wholesale replacement of the entire user-dir, which did not go well... Too many non-TDE menu differences, the entire TDE menu disappeared, and the only applet left in the Panel was the quick launcher. So, I’m going for the move ‘just the guts’ approach... I can track down all the somewhat random application dirs like ~/.gimp and “~/Calibre Library” as well as the regular Documents/Download type dirs. But, will any of TDE’s desktop configuration type files[1] be overwritten by replacing these directories wholesale from the old system? ~/.trinity/share ~/.local/share ~/.config ~/.kde/share [2] Are there any other directories that have user type information that I’m missing? And, are there any directories that need to be excluded (as it’d break the new system’s TDE if overwritten)? Thanks, Michael [1] Things like menus, panels, and desktop settings files. [2] Oddly ~/.kde has recently written to files in it, who knew stuff is still being stuck there... I don’t have KDE installed, and have only booted TDE for at least the last 3 years; all these (and probably a few more) have been modified in the last month: .kde/share/config/kfilemodulerc .kde/share/config/kdeglobals .kde/share/config/startkdeinitlockrc .kde/share/apps/RecentDocuments/

Two-up icons in vertical panel bars?
by J Leslie Turriff 12 Apr '19

12 Apr '19

Because I now have a high-resolution widescreen monitor, I keep all of my working icons in vertical panels on the left and right sides of my display to maximize the amount of vertical space for windows. I like to have my Preview & Pager applet set to two columns for easy switching between desktops, and that makes me want to use a Large size panel, but that means that I'm running out of space for application icons. Is there any way to make my icons appear two-up, the way the ones in the System Tray do? In the attached screenshot, both the right (main) panel and left panel are Large size. As can be seen, when the left panel is set to Large size, there's no more room for application icons. If the icons in the left panel could be displayed the way the ones in the System Tray appear, that would be very helpful. N.B. I don't like to use desktop icons, and I don't like using shortcut keys for switching desktops. Leslie

TDE & conky
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 09 Apr '19

09 Apr '19

Hi all! I try to get a transparent background with conky, but somehow I need dirty tricks to make it going: When I start conky from .xinitrc ("sleep 15; conky -d"), the background is blue and stays blue when TDE is running. Conky writes text on that blue background, but never erases it, so it gets unreadable after some time. Switching to another desktop and back again does not change this. The behaviour is the same without delay, so that TDE starts in parallel and twin comes up after conky. When I start conky from .trinity/Autostart/<something>.desktop - which calls only "sleep 15; conky -d", then the background is black and stays black, conky erases it before writing. Switching to another desktop and back again gives a pseudo-transparent background in conky. When twin comes up after conky, then the background of conky is as above (blue without erase). I have put the second way including switching desktops into a file that's called from TDE autostart, so things basicly work. But what I do not understand: what is the difference from calling conky from .xinitrc to calling it from .trinity/Autostart? And what chages, if twin comes up before/after conky? I'm quite sure that this is TDE specific, 'cause when running fvwm I do not observe this. And it looks like it is OS agnostic, I see the same thing happen on FreeBSD, too. Problem with starting arduino ide (from devel to user)
by MLR 06 Apr '19

06 Apr '19

Hi again. Did Nik mean chmod o+w or chmod a+w? I looked to the manpage, a+w is writeable for everyone. It can solve the message "failed to open '/etc/tqt3/tqt_plugins_3.5rc.tmp'". But I learned that user shouldnt write in /etc/... folder. When I made chmod a+w /etc/tqt3 does it affect on /etc or only in /etc/tqt3? I dont want to destroy my system. :/ For the new readers, this is my problem: I have ubuntu 18.4 with trinity R14.0.5. If I want to start the arduino ide from arduino.cc (download and extract arduino-1.8.7-linux64.tar.xz) there comes the splash-screen for one second and it crashes with this message: ~/arduino-1.8.7$ ./arduino Picked up JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS: TQSettings::sync: failed to open '/etc/tqt3/tqt_plugins_3.5rc.tmp' for writing What I have to install or change? I logged in today with the ubuntu standard desktop and the arduino ide works great. deloptes points in devel to $CLASSPATH, the var in empty in my shell. ./arduino is a bash script. back on wheezy 2 problems w/stretch
by Gene Heskett 05 Apr '19

05 Apr '19

First is the tde desktop looks a bit strange. When I installed, because getting rid of gnome is such a pain in the ass, I chose xfce4 during the install, and although I've installed several hundred of the core trinity bits, I still have an xfce4 desktop. /etc/X11/default-display-manager says twm. /etc/init.d has lightdm. I'm getting the tde login but am not getting tde. And I can't run a root session in a Konsole, display 10 no perms. I guess thats more than two problems. Do I rip lightdm out by its hair with an rm to it in etc/init.d or what to actually get a tde x session running? kmail has become essentially unusable
by Gene Heskett 04 Apr '19

04 Apr '19

I just stopped it, reinstalled everything kmail related in a synaptic search, and restarted it from the tde menu. It immediately reported two bad indices, for folders emc and spam-hold, and took 32 minutes to scan those 2 folders and open its gui. I own as gene:gene with perms from 600 to 644 in the /home/gene/Mail subdir. It is NOT updating now for 4 days, the files in /home/gene/Mail/emc/cur to indicate read or important by appending the ':2,S' or ':2,RS' but it is generating new indices, 2 of them everytime it tries to scan that folder, so it CAN create/write to that folder. There are around 60100 messages in that folder, and the indice files are drwxr-xr-x 5 gene gene 4096 Mar 31 12:08 emc -rw------- 1 gene gene 44551163 Mar 31 12:08 .emc.index -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 240389 Mar 31 12:08 .emc.index.ids These 2 files have been nuked to see if a rebuild fixes it, no. And now everthing kmail, about 8 packages, has been re-installed from the local archive since the mirror is missing now for several days. Is there a fix? Or can it be fixed short of installing a stretch netinstall on a new drive? Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. [trinity-users] Fedora - where is default xsession configured?
by Felix Miata 04 Apr '19

04 Apr '19

In Debians, it's /etc/X11/default-display-manager. In openSUSE 15.0, it's /etc/alternatives/default-xsession.desktop. startx opens TDE session. Neither works in Fedora 29. startx starts X, then exits. startx /opt/trinity/bin/starttde works, but shouldn't be needed. There are only two installed, Trinity, and IceWM. Default should not be neither. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is religion, not science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. Linux User #211409 ** a11y rocks! Felix Miata *** http://fm.no-ip.com/

folder problen in kmail
by Gene Heskett 29 Mar '19

29 Mar '19

I am going thru a phase where one of my kmail folders is about to roll over the 65,536 for number of msgs. Unforch as it approaches this it goes thru a phase where a group of messages is not being marked as they are being read, so everytime I leave that folder after having read the same 28 (this mornings count) messages for about the 10th time, and it does mark them read as I re-read them, but when I come back to that folder, it takes 30 secs or so to scan it for unread, and them marks them as unread again. Doing an ls -l on Mail/emc/cur shows these files without the appendages as follows: -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 9223 Mar 27 08:03 1553688235.6391.LiBdm:2,S -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 9246 Mar 27 08:16 1553688964.6391.BJZIy:2,RS -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 9322 Mar 27 08:50 1553691034.6391.5xr6g:2,S -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 8944 Mar 27 09:16 1553692607.6391.0Q1hQ -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 10866 Mar 27 14:06 1553709994.6005.a5pLa -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 11497 Mar 27 14:18 1553710720.6005.jKZVa -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 10992 Mar 27 14:42 1553712166.6005.RBD79 -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 12402 Mar 27 14:55 1553712913.6005.pCJ8s -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 10043 Mar 27 15:52 1553716351.6005.9yXfM -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 8038 Mar 27 16:40 1553719225.6005.V1wmO -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 9095 Mar 27 17:04 1553720673.6005.nsaQf -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 9384 Mar 27 17:07 1553720854.6005.zJ0nJ -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 11269 Mar 27 19:35 1553729726.6005.SnEOl -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 14813 Mar 27 20:11 1553731902.6005.CwKRo -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 11731 Mar 27 20:29 1553732987.6005.H6Oq1 -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 8933 Mar 27 21:11 1553735515.6005.O3hqS -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 8889 Mar 27 21:39 1553737161.6005.vdlh5 -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 9105 Mar 27 22:00 1553738447.6005.Jrmmh -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 12810 Mar 28 16:16 1553804210.9481.5wDVe -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 9690 Mar 28 16:16 1553804211.9481.FXlrf -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 8851 Mar 28 16:16 1553804213.9481.RFXOf -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 7964 Mar 28 16:16 1553804216.9481.0ysrQ -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 9512 Mar 28 16:16 1553804217.9481.1c0Gn -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 8792 Mar 28 16:16 1553804217.9481.hBg3G -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 9021 Mar 28 16:16 1553804217.9481.ODcCm -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 8846 Mar 28 16:16 1553804217.9481.xLM3g -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 7845 Mar 28 17:33 1553808826.9481.epVh2 -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 8826 Mar 28 17:37 1553809025.9481.Y4qD9 -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 7956 Mar 28 22:04 1553825086.9481.alSnz -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 8934 Mar 28 22:04 1553825087.9481.aw1c0 -rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 11298 Mar 29 01:43 1553838220.9481.v5Iqy Does anyone have a clue how I might fix this. kpdf fails, can't print, all "filters" defective
by Gene Heskett 13 Mar '19

13 Mar '19

I even tried to create a new ppd, using the print tool call by kpdf, but at click on print, error instead. This may indicate there is a filter problem, as ALL the color/density info is stripped from the streams delivered to the printer, resulting in extremely pale color output, as if every option in the ppd was permanently set to -20. This has been a problem since I bought this printer, a huge thing with an adf scanner, capable of 11x17 tabloid output. Using the brother supplied drivers, all they have ever said was to install their drivers, which I have several times to zero effect. If you folks can find and solve this problem, I'd be most appreciative. I've removed the true filter, leaving enscript, but that also pops up this error: The MIME type application/postscript is not supported as input of the filter chain (this may happen with non-CUPS spoolers when performing page selection on a non-PostScript file). Do you want TDE to convert the file to a supported format? None of the other filter selections materially change this error message. The file in question is rendered on screen perfectly in evince, okular gv and kpdf. xpdf also works mostly. kpdf's properties claims its PDF-1.4. Will the conversion wreck it?, I can download another copy from the card vendors web site. My guess is yes since it does not show a pdf output format in the selection list. Help appreciated. blank menus and lack of panel
by Matt `da Wolf 10 Mar '19

10 Mar '19

I love TDE but over the years I've seen some issues. I've ap plied workarounds with varying levels of success. Right now simply running twin and tde's kalarm withn xfce4 generate a lot of trinity-child logs. .xsession-errors is at least 600 megs. I installed a fresh installation of bionic. Got TDE to work properly as it's own environment. Mounted my homedir and that is when the blank configuration menus happened again. I even made a new .trinity on that home drive but it still behaved the same. unmounting the home hard drive and letting it run off of the homedir bionic's fresh install made seemed to have fixed it. Are there any other directories that effect the entire environment besides .trinity? -- Regards, Matt `da Wolf ============= ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL??!! GO REDSKINS!!! ADOPT A WOLF! KMix not controlling volume / Konsole not beeping (MX-18 Linux)
by Michael 28 Feb '19

28 Feb '19

Hi All, - TDE - MX-18 Linux (Debian 9 "stretch") - GTX 1060 (NVidia) - ASUS monitor (VP228he), connected through HDMI Ref: https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=48235 I finally got sounds working but... - The applet KMix doesn’t change the volume no matter which option I select within it. - Konsole will play a test sound for the ‘Bell emitted within a visible session’ but it doesn’t play the sound (or any other it seems) when it should (e.g. hit ‘Backspace’ at empty prompt). - When TCC restarts the sound server all 'The Window Manager' sounds no longer work. 'The Window Manager' sounds seem to be coming from the MX’s Settings Manager>System Sounds not TDE. [1] Based upon the last item, I’m guessing TDE and MX are fighting over who’s managing sound? Just a guess, but does anyone have a hint on what to look at to get TDE back in control? The ‘Ref:’ above has ‘aplay -l’ and other details. Thanks, Michael [1] https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=104&t=48790

kedit , kate , konqueror, modify files on remote computer
by andre_debian＠numericable.fr 23 Feb '19

23 Feb '19

Hello, I posted some months ago this problem : When I want to modify some files with Konqueror and kedit, from a remote computer server on my local computer (sftp), the file is downloaded in a tmp trinity directory. When it is saved, I have to upload it to the server. This is a waste of time, if I must modify many files. If I use "kate" (instead kedit), I dont'have this problem. Strange, on my laptop, with * strictly * the same configuration than my workplace computer, kedit saves directly the files on the remote server. Not so important, kate is good, it's just to understand. Happy day, André

On Tuesday 19 Feb 2019 13:59:07 David C. Rankin wrote: > Look on kedit as the blacksheep of the editor family. Not quite on topic for the original post, but a comment on that comment: There is one respect where, in my opinion, KEdit is much better than KWrite. If you are jotting down a lot of notes on something, and using soft word wrap, and you want to scan through the file, looking for something, by dragging the scroll bar up or down, KWrite has a disconcerting behaviour such that as you drag, the top of each paragraph jumps to the top of the text area, making it very uncomfortable to scan through the file. KEdit does not have that problem, and behaves perfectly smoothly as you drag the scroll bar up and down. For that reason, I always use KEdit for jotting down a lot of informal notes on something, and it's great for that purpose. But I always use KWrite for coding. I remember that KDE 3 had a bug such that turning off the cursor blinking in Qt3 control did not stop the cursor blinking in KEdit. That was such a serious problem that I had to stop using KEdit in KDE 3. That bug has been fixed in Trinity, and the fix is much appreciated.

15 Feb '19

Hi All, Stupid question time, and really completely off topic for this group, but my search-fu didn't really find anything, and there’s a good chance someone here knows, so... Why is almost every non-user program’s priority 0 (nice at -20)? Instead of them having priorities scattered based upon system importance say between 0 and 5? Logically it just doesn’t seem that basically every priority in Nix should be either 0 (system app) or 20 (user app). Just a dumb question that’s been in the back of my brain for years. Best, Michael

Problems after upgrade to beowulf/buster
by Dr. Nikolaus Klepp 11 Feb '19

11 Feb '19

Hi all! I just upgraded my devuan boxes to beowulf. Most things work as expected, but there are 2 issues that just kill my nerves: 1) I cannot change mouse acceleration any more. TDE settings are ignored, as are any changes I do with "xinput" 2) DPI settings are not correct anymore: I have dpi set to 120 via tde controlcenter. After the upgrade gtk2-applications still use 120 dpi, but TDE ignores the dpi-settings, it uses 96. Now this is quite irritating. Has somebody else had these issues after upgrading? Weird kaddressbook distribution list problem

Anyone else seeing issues with kaddressbook and distribution lists? Three of our users, to my knowledge; others might not have noticed yet, have had distribution lists corrupted in their std.vcf files for no apparent reason. Zim stuff (WYSIWYG HTML editor that outputs clean HTML code?)
by Michael 06 Feb '19

06 Feb '19

Alas I only get to play on the weekends, and this full write up isn’t going to be done for at least a month, so figured I’d post the pre-bits to all y’all, as most of you are programmer enough to read dev notes and understand them well enough... As Kate said, “Zim, I like it so far.” It does output almost clean HTML code, but it’s definitely not a complete solution for writing a local web page and being able to ‘rip the body guts out’ and paste it into a CMS Body box for publishing. That said, it’s the best I’ve ever seen, so I’m using it. ## Random Notes Zim is really cool. The set of Plugins available is extensive. Do go though the whole list with the help file open in a separate window. Make sure to configure the ones that can be config’ed! Templates: HTML export templates exist that can be customized Crashes a lot, auto saves every 10 seconds by default. Copy/Paste of links doesn’t always work. Link creator is lacking and does stuff you didn’t ask it to. Spellchecker right click menu is in Spanish(?). Spell checker isn’t great, but works well enough. Has an insanely cool Table of Contents plugin, but it does not HTML export the ToC! Q@$%#$%!!! # # # Work flow I’ve found that seems to work. - Write your HTML page in Zim - Export HTML to see final product in browser(s) [1] - Once finished with HTML use Notetab Pro, or your equivalent post processor, to run though your ToC generation*, cleanup, and fix-it scripts. - Use Quanta Plus, Kate, whatever, to get CSS to your liking. * If anyone asks I’ll post what I end up with that creates a ToC from H attributes. Kdesktop 100% CPU issue
by Russell Brown 06 Feb '19

06 Feb '19

Sorry; here's another R14.0.6 issue we're seeing (Yes, I can/will report this as a bug but thought I'd throw it out here first just to see if anyone's got any ideas). Logging in (via XDMCP) multiple times as the same user/uid is causing kdesktop to do weird refresh stuff then get stuck in a loop (100% CPU usage). I have seen this once-in-a-blue-moon under 14.0.5/Debian Jessie but 14.0.6/Debian Stretch seems to make it fail every time. Yes, I know it's bad practise to login multiple times as the same user but people will do these things despite being told not to :-( So, before I get into the nitty gritty about creating a failing case, is there anything obvious I should set/unset to stop this? Is it a known problem? How to recreate. Hard: have a bunch of X-Terminals. Easy: Use vnc :-) (see below for setup). User logs in (XDMCP/tdm) on first xterm/vnc session. Same user logs in again from second xterm/vnc session. The cursor on each desktop flickers with a busy? sort of pointer and the desktop refreshes sparodically. NB. Logging out of one session seems to set a desktop lock on the second. kdesktop for each session will probably have a high CPU use. Same user logs in a third time and you end up with a kdesktop running 100% CPU and the desktop(s) get unresponsive (can happen with just two sessions but three makes it fail quickly). OK, so... a) You say Buster. Where did you install TDE from? What version? As far as I know, for Buster you need the premilinary builds. b) You say KDE 3.5.10. I seem to remember that install instructions said to purge any KDE 3.5 elements befor install. So yes, KDE 3.5 and TDE clash. It's known. I guess that's because thes share files with the same name, but different contents. If you want Trinity, you should better install on a system with no KDE, and running a testing TDE on a testing Debian, I'm not really surprised you encounter some problems. These are caused by your environment, not by Trinity itself. Thierry

Devuan Full Disk Encryption (FDE) shutdown issue
by Michael 04 Feb '19

04 Feb '19

Moving this to a separate thread as it’s nor really related to switching to TDE. On Sunday 03 February 2019 08:34:24 pm William Morder wrote: > When you say "root shutdown unclean": How do you shutdown, and what are you > seeing? On Monday 04 February 2019 07:53:46 am Stefan Krusche wrote: > Can you point to a reference for this bug? While I did mention the issue on the Devuan user mailing list, I do not know if there is a bug report for it. It may be the issue Stefan references, but, if so MX Linux has patched/solved the issue on their own as I do not see it with MX Linux. To maintain due diligence for client NDAs I must use encryption, or some other method, to safeguard their data. As such, I no longer have Devuan installed. Bill (I think it was Bill, sorry if I’m mis-quoting) is entirely right though, I have never seen any of the lags or hangs with Devuan or MX Linux that the systemd versions of Debian are fairly well know for. # # # Here are my remembrances from a month or so ago. Obviously these are not the exact message phrases. Observations: - Install Devuan selecting automatically use full disk and encrypt [everything]. [1] - In the Software Selection only select: - - Console productivity - - Standard system utilities - - (e.g. Un-check everything else) - Install TDE - Boot normally [1] >> > I have a setup with the root partition in a logical Volume of LVM on top of > LUKS (whole disk but /boot) Yes, that’s what I had as well. /home was included in the root partition. Swap was a separate encrypted partition in the LVM. << [1] Best guess: Since so little is installed, you don’t have the usual startup/shutdown splash screens that usually ‘hide’ any of the startup/shutdown scrolling messages. Try hitting ‘Escape’ if you have splash screens hiding the messages? - Turn off the computer by using - - TDE menu >> Log out >> Turn off During shutdown you will see messages somewhat similar to what Stefan shows, but they are closer to this and explicitly say “[FAIL]” in red: “Unmounting {root partition name} [FAIL] ... [FAIL][FAIL][FAIL][FAIL][FAIL]” It hangs for several seconds (15?) on the first [FAIL] and then re-tries enough times to wrap the line. - I shutdown approximately 13 times after noticing the first [FAIL] message where I explicitly watched the shutdown messages. - Of the boot up sequences I explicitly watched (10+) there were 3 instances of fsck(?*) finding and fixing errors on the root partition. * The messages go fast, I’m fairly sure is was fsck, but it could have been anything really, my knowledge of the actual boot process is pretty weak. # # # That’s as best as my memory gives me. If you install Devuan with Full Disk Encryption (FDE), it’s really easy to spot, just watch a shutdown. Okay, I’ve got to get back to work :( If there’s more Q’s, ask, but it’ll be a few days or next weekend before I get to them. Best, Michael
